Wouldnt it be nice if there was a magic weight loss pill or perhaps some concoction that you could consume that will melt away all your unwanted fat?

Lets assume there was, would you have to take it for the rest of your life for the results to last forever?

And if you do take it in the long term, what would the side effects be?

Wouldnt it also be nice if those exercise routines promising a six pack in six days work, or if you could get your dream body in six weeks.

I once bought a fat burning cream that you apply on areas you want to lose fat, in the hope that I would not have to exercise or eat clean.

ALSO READ | Letters: SA is a failed state, thanks to CR inaction

I even bought an electric vibrating belt and several ab machines promising to give you a sixpack. But thats nothing compared to what my biggest buy was- a fat melting machine- salon style- which I imported from the United States.

With that baby in my life, I thought that if I ate healthy and used the fat buster I would never have to exercise again in my life if I didnt want to.

While I may have seen some difference in everything I bought- call it the placebo effect if you like- nothing really worked.

That aside, the problem with everything I bought is that it all had to used/applied regularly.

I didnt have the patience, time or discipline to follow the instructions and use as required. Weight loss is hard work, and maintaining your weight after weight loss is just as hard.

I have been on numerous diets or eating plans from the low-carb, whole-food diet to a high protein diet to the quick fix cabbage soup diet.

ALSO READ | Opinion: The safety of children on the road

The protein diet I recall all too well. I had met a prosecutor in court who I hadnt seen in months. She looked as if she had shrunk.

The second I had a free moment, I immediately went to her and started complimenting her weight loss.

She bragged that it was the protein diet she had been on for three months that had led to her weight loss.

She even detailed how it worked.

That night I went home and researched it and most of the comments or reviews of the diet were favourable.

So, before I knew it, I was on the protein diet and in a week or two I lost 1 kilogram. However, it wasnt long afterwards that I got sick and tired of only eating protein and that was the end of the diet.

These days I do intermittent fasting when it suits me, which is an eating plan that switches between fasting and eating on a regular schedule.

However, the downside is that you can end up eating less calories which is actually bad for the body.

What I can say about majority of the diets out there is that a lot of them actually do work, however, it may not be sustainable in the long term, because you just get sick of them.

The key to staying at a particular weight is exercising and cutting out junk or unhealthy foods. But this is difficult to stick to because there are those days, where you crave a donut or chocolates or anything sweet. But thats okay, you are human after all.

However, its important to stick on the healthy side of food more than on the unhealthy side. Its even okay to have a cheat day, or even a cheat weekend, but dont overdo it.

I have always admired celebrities and have held a lot of them in high esteem, always wondering how on earth they manage to stay looking so beautiful and in shape at red carpets events.

But then when you look at unposed photos of them, snapped by paparazzi you realise they are not as perfect as you thought they were.

For the movie Monster, South African born actor Charlize Theron put on 80 pounds or rather 13.6 kilograms.

It reportedly took her six weeks to lose the weight. Can you or me lose so much weight in that timeframe?

Maybe we can if we had a personal dietician, chef and personal trainer. But many of us are not that lucky.

These personal trainers are like alarm clocks that just wont stop going off. I mean they arrive at your home as scheduled and your training gets started. No time for procrastination.

As a working-class person, with no personal dietician, chef and personal trainer, its difficult to be disciplined especially when it comes to exercising and eating healthily.

In addition, for a lot of people not in the public limelight, they dont get paid for looking good, or having a Size 6 figure.

They do it for themselves.

The bottom line is that if you want to lose weight, or stay in shape there are no quick fixes, you have to put in the work, exercise and eat healthy.

Charlize TheronTheron gained 30 pounds to play the role of convicted serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003s Monster, which landed her an Academy Award. More recently, she gained almost 50 pounds for her starring role in the 2018 film Tully. Compared to her weight gain for Monster, she said this time it took longer to shed the pounds.

Will SmithFor the 2001 feature Ali, Smith spent a whole year with a trainer to embody legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. He said he was willing to sacrifice everything to live up to Alis legacy in the film, gaining 35 pounds and doing all the films fight scenes without a stunt double.

Alex BrightmanThe Tony-nominated actors leading role in School of Rock was so physically demanding that he lost a pound or two every week while performing. However, the role itself required him to put on extra weighta tough balance to strike! Mark RuffaloFor HBOs miniseries I Know This Much Is True, Ruffalo played twin brothers, one of whom was written to be heavier than the other. As such, he shot all his scenes for the first character (the svelter of the two), before spending five weeks working to gain 30 pounds to then play the other. That is dual devotion!

Ben PlattBen Platt has come a long way from his breakout role as magic-loving geek Benji Applebaum in Pitch Perfect. He lost 30 pounds to play the lead in Broadways Dear Evan Hansen by cutting out dairy and gluten and frequenting Soul Cycle, wanting to convincingly embody the anxious 17-year-old and stay healthy for the demanding eight-show-a-week schedule. His efforts paid off; he won a 2017 leading actor in a musical Tony Award.

Ramin KarimlooFor his Tony-nominated Broadway debut as Jean Valjean in the 2014 revival of Les Misrables, Karimloo started the INSANITY program six months prior to the shows opening. After reading the novel and learning about how keeping in shape was an integral part of his character, he ate 5,000 calories a day, was bodybuilding between shows, and cycled 16 miles. By the time he reached Broadway, he was deadlifting almost 500 pounds and benching 300.

Zoe KravitzKravitzs cleanse to play the anorexic and bulimic lead Marie in the 2014 film The Road Within involved some questionable methods, including drinking clay and eating a Mason jar of pureed vegetables daily. Joaquin PhoenixTo quote Melissa Villaseor in an installment of Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live: Joaquin Phoenix, skinny skinny. Neil Patrick HarrisAfter wrapping up his role as Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother, Harris went through a strict weight loss plan to take on the starring role in the 2014 Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The Tony Award winner did nothing but cardio for months to lose the weight. Combined with the demanding energy involved in the 90-minute performance, Harriss role as Hedwig helped maintain the weight loss.

Jason MomoaFamous for his role as Khal Drogo in the first season of Game of Thrones, Momoa never lifted a weight until he had to get into shape for 2011s Conan the Barbarian. Suffering from thinning hair? Your diet could be the reason why – Telegraph.co.uk

Posted: March 29, 2020 at 2:46 am

Lets talk about hair loss. Yes, I know its not the sexiest beauty topic, but its nonetheless something many of us will have to deal with. It can be genetic, of course, which is classed as female pattern hair loss and is caused by an increase in male hormones in the body. Stress has an impact, too (it raises the testosterone levels in women), but what experts are increasingly seeing is diet-related hair loss.

Leading trichologist Anabel Kingsley has noted a rise in cases where women have lost hair after following a fad diet. Your hair is an essential tissue, she explains. If you dont have enough calories, carbohydrates or fats in your diet, your hair is the first thing to suffer. Your hair cells are the second-fastest dividing cells in your body and they need energy from carbohydrates to regenerate.

A lack of protein can also cause brittle hair, Kingsley tells me, but her biggest no-no? Juice fasting is awful for your hair. You can guarantee six to 12 weeks after a juice cleanse youll experience hair loss. Kingsley also suggests doing your homework before trying veganism, because it can have a detrimental effect on the hair. Always take a vitamin B12 supplement (its not found in plants), get plenty of iron from leafy greens and eat quinoa and chia seeds, which have complete proteins.

Everyone, vegan or not, should take a vitamin D capsule supplement to promote hair growth, too, says Kingsley. Every hair follicle has a vitamin D receptor, which influences the hair-growth cycle. Low vitamin D is linked to alopecia, so taking a supplement is an easy win to help with hair loss.

Thinning hair is trickier to style, too. In a recent survey of 2,000 women, Tresemm found that over half of us regularly have a bad hair day, whether its a lack of volume or hard-to-style cuts. I can relate. I met with the celebrity hairstylist Jenny Cho recently (she counts Scarlett Johansson and Charlize Theron among her regulars) and she shared her tips for managing thinning hair on a daily basis.

Dont brush your hair when its wet and tangled from the roots down, she advises. Start from the ends with a detangling brush and gently work your way up to the roots to prevent any breakage. Jenny also suggests using old-school mousse, such as Thickening Mousse by Bumble and bumble, to get more volume. (Before you say anything, mousse has come a long way from its crunchy 80s roots.) Use with abandon, ditch the juicediets and get some vitamin D.

The Stars Turn Out for Jimmy Kimmel; Diet Coke Celebrates Movies and Soda

Posted: February 28, 2012 at 11:24 pm

We realize there's only so much time one can spend in a day watching new trailers, viral video clips, and shaky cell phone footage of people arguing on live television. This is why every day The Atlantic Wire highlights the videos that truly earn your five minutes (or less) of attention. Today: Jimmy Kimmel's post-Oscars special now features more star power than the actual Oscars, a Diet Coke about movies made us tear up, and revisiting Sacha Baron Cohen's red carpet ash-throwing.

As with the actual Academy Awards, your appreciation for Jimmy Kimmel's annual post-Oscars special depends in large part on how forgiving you are of leisurely paced, star-packed television. Case in point: the centerpiece of last night's show was a 9-minute-long parody trailer for a movie called Movie: The Movie. Nine minutes! But it also had the likes Matt Damon, Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren, Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Jessica Alba, Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman, and Gary Oldman showing what good sports they could be. On a night in which a black-and-white silent movie from France won Best Picture, we were willing to swap brevity for an extra dose of star power. [ABC]

Considering that Sacha Baron Cohen spent a major chunk of last week in character promoting The Dictator and showed up on the red carpet last night carrying an urn, it's remarkable how much being covered in the purported ashes of Kim Jong Il seemed to frazzle Ryan Seacrest. What did he think was going to happen? More pressingly, what did Seacrest think was in the prop urn? If you're going to be talking with Sacha Baron Cohen on live television, these are really questions that are worth asking, especially if you're going to get upset when your suit is covered in soot. Despite swearing never to be moved by a Diet Coke ad, we were moved by the Diet Coke ad that aired during the Oscars last night. It's all about Diet Coke and how much people who make movies like to drink it, but it wormed its way into our heart with a lovely orchestral score and a behind-the-scenes look at how what Martin Scorsese would call a picture is made. There was a major event in astronomy over the weekend, when Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and the moon lined up to form a "triple conjunction" that was visible on both Saturday and Sunday night, assuming you live in a place where light pollution isn't too severe. If you live in a place where the view of the night sky is fuzzy at best, Stephen Ramsden of solarastronomy.org took some of his slides from Saturday's sky and turned them into a jaunty, timelapse video that made us jealous of what we missed.
