Sermorelin for Weight Loss: Does It Work? How Long To See Results?

Posted: March 24, 2023 at 12:10 am

Anyone considering sermorelin for weight loss, also known as sermorelin acetate, should know that its a peptide that aids in boosting the bodys release of human growth hormone via the pituitary gland and should only be used under supervision of a healthcare professional.

Peptides like sermorelin are short chains of amino acids that have a hand in metabolism and appetite, but since theres not much research on their effectiveness and safety. However, theres plenty of anecdotal evidence online that suggests it may be good for weight loss but deciding if its worthwhile or if another alternative such has human growth therapy (HGT) is better and/or safer.

So take glimpse into a few peoples journeys of using sermorelin treatment, view their before and after sermorelin results, and get science backed answers to the questions of does it work and how long results can take.

The human growth hormone (HGH) found naturally in the body functions to provide muscle development and regenerates cells. Though many people now use sermorelin for weight loss, sermorelin therapy was initially used for both children and adults who had growth deficiencies or developmental delays.1

Its primarily used in young children who have poor growth rates, but when the bodys natural growth hormones start to slow down (often around age 30), people may notice:

Due to these symptoms of less natural HGH production, some adults choose to turn to sermorelin as a better approach to management of adult-onset growth hormone insufficiency and to stimulate more natural HGH production from the pituitary gland.2

Although many artificial HGH products and treatments are available, sermorelin is not one of these; rather, its a natural peptide that stimulates the body to release more of its natural growth hormone.

Sermorelin, ipamorelin, and vitamin B are all similar treatments that can elevate the body up to par when it struggles to naturally keep up.

With certain therapies including sermorelin and ipamorelin, the goal is often to reduce body fat and increase lean muscle mass, among other benefits; vitamin B treatments are administered through a similar process and are identical to many sermorelin benefits including boosting energy levels, aiding in wound healing, treating anxiety, and improving overall well-being.

Those wondering how does sermorelin work must look no further: sermorelin injections for weight loss are administered subcutaneously and are recommended to be injected into the thigh or stomach areas where the body has more fat.

However, when it comes to sermorelin, weight loss is far from the only benefitin fact, sermorelin seems to help the body defy aging.

Sermorelin peptide benefits are abundant and include the following:

As with many peptides, theres both benefits and risks so be sure to see the risks section below to understand the pros and the cons of sermorelin.

Anyone on weight loss diets is tempted to ask how much weight can be lost on the program theyre on and those considering sermorelin are likely no exception. Unfortunately there is no universal answer because weight loss can vary greatly depending on countless factors including starting weight, calories burned, activity level, genetics, eating habits, and more.

Another important factor is ones frequency of use. Some recommend taking one dose (usually 0.2-0.3 mcg) each evening for a month, while others stand by a sermorelin cycle of 3-6 months being the most effective.

Furthermore, some dont recommend taking any breaks whatsoever and adamantly argue that its safe to use year-round.

The amount of weight loss on sermorelin therapy can vary just as much as the differing views on its usage. The best advice we have to offer is to err on the side of starting slowly as ones body adjusts and consulting a doctor to ensure proper use and dosages per person.

Its imperative to see how a growth hormone, athletic performance, and aging interact with one another when trying something like sermorelin and its natural to wonder how long does it take for sermorelin to work and on sermorelin, how long to see results?3

Sermorelins effectiveness kicks in almost immediately in terms of health benefits and stimulation of the pituitary gland, but most people feel their body reacting within the first month or so, then begin seeing true results within 3-6 months.

A loose timeline follows, but keep in mind that this will always vary from person to person based on their normal hormone levels and many other factors..

For some extra motivation and insight into what sermorelin injections for weight loss can do, we have a few examples of sermorelin weight loss results to share. Here are 3 sermorelin before and after results and pictures of different people who opted for sermorelin peptides for weight loss to assist them in their health and fitness goals.

Amber decided to give sermorelin a try and hasnt looked back since; she lost over 30 lbs in under 6 months after starting sermorelin injections paired with semaglutide for weight management. Shes not only lost an impressive amount of weight, but now feels energized, has improved complexion, and is sleeping better.

After being a former athlete and letting life get in the way of her health goals, Amber used sermorelin to support her on her health journey and improved her diet. Her goals for sermorelin were better rest and recovery and burning more fat and sermorelin has served her well.

Before starting sermorelin therapy to increase his HGH production, Derek regularly overindulged in junk food, drank alcohol, slept a lot, and noticed he easily became breathless.

After beginning his use of sermorelin and TRT, Derek soon began to notice subtle changes that quickly became much more drastic and within 6 months his physique changed in shockingly impressive ways.

Derek said that he now has enough energy to work out for 1 hour 7 days per week and fuels his body with frequent small meals and plenty of fruit and vegetable servings each day instead of junk food and alcohol.

He watches out for hidden sugars and noted that he actually sleeps less now but much more deeply and restfullyso much so that he doesnt even use an alarm clock anymore since his body is so attuned that his body clock does the job for him.

Note: These results may not be perfectly indicative of weight loss on sermorelin alone since Derek used TRT as well; the results are impressive regardless but be sure to have appropriate expectations if trying sermorelin therapy alone.

After mentioning that she didnt realize she had gained some weight until seeing photos of herself, Regina started her own round of sermorelin treatments and decided to stick with it after both feeling better and liking how she looked more. With more energy and clearer skin, Regina said that she couldnt be happier with her results.

Whether trying peptides on their own, with other weight loss treatments or supplements, or paired with trending diets, its important to know if there are any potential risks. Its wise to ask if any potential sermorelin long term side effects exist, but we are happy to report that any negative impacts are extremely rare.

Not only is sermorelin highly effective in comparison to other hormone replacement therapiesit also causes far fewer side effects due to it being used to boost natural HGH instead of putting synthetic HGH into the body.

Notably, most negative reactions (if any) happen right away and are due to skin irritation or allergic reactions at the injection site. These can include pain, redness, or swelling at the site or occasionally a rash or hives.

If anyone has swelling of the tongue or difficulty breathing they should seek medical help immediately.

Other side effects are rare as well but may include:

Although sermorelin for weight loss may not be a good fit for everyone, overall it is healthy, has few negative health risks, and is very effective. Generally, sermorelin may be worth considering for healthy adults, however, only under the supervision of a healthcare professional. Its always best to consult a physician before making any major adjustments to your diet, lifestyle, supplementations or adding in peptides such as sermorelin.

Between sermorelin vs tesamorelin, our preference is sermorelin for weight loss.4 Although tesamorelin injections serve a similar purpose and are used to help reduce belly fat, increase energy, and boost metabolism, our top choice is sermorelin due to having much fewer side effects and seeming to work more efficiently in most people.5

Tesamorelin not only has been shown to take up to 26 weeks to reduce body fat in any significant way, but it also has much more severe potential side effects including swelling, fluid retention, numbness, blood glucose fluctuations and increased joint pain.

Whether wanting increased strength and lean muscle mass to improve ones powerlifting routine or simply wanting to reap other benefits such as weight loss, immune support, and increased energy, a clear winner for HGH-increasing peptides is sermorelin for weight loss and for general wellbeing.

The Mayo Clinic Diet: A weight-loss program for life

The Mayo Clinic Diet is a lifestyle approach to weight loss that can help you maintain a healthy weight for a lifetime.

The Mayo Clinic Diet is a long-term weight management program created by a team of weight-loss experts at Mayo Clinic.

The program has been updated and is designed to help you reshape your lifestyle by adopting healthy new habits and breaking unhealthy old ones. The goal is to make simple, pleasurable changes that will result in a healthy weight that you can maintain for the rest of your life.

The purpose of the Mayo Clinic Diet is to help you lose excess weight and find a healthy way of eating that you can sustain for a lifetime.

It focuses on changing your daily routine by adding and breaking habits that can affect your weight. Simple habits, such as eating more fruits and vegetables, not eating while you watch TV, and moving your body for 30 minutes a day, can help you lose weight.

The Mayo Clinic Diet is based on the latest behavior-change science, which will help you find your inner motivation to lose weight, set achievable goals and learn to handle setbacks.

You might choose to follow the Mayo Clinic Diet because you:

Remember to check with your health care provider before starting any weight-loss program, especially if you have any health conditions.

The Mayo Clinic Diet is the official weight-loss program developed by Mayo Clinic experts. It is based on research and clinical experience.

The program focuses on eating delicious healthy foods and increasing physical activity. It emphasizes that the best way to keep weight off for good is to change your lifestyle and adopt new habits that you enjoy and can stick with. This program can be tailored to your own individual needs, health history and preferred eating style.

The Mayo Clinic Diet has two phases:

To support your weight-loss journey, the Mayo Clinic Diet also makes available electronic tools, such as a food and exercise journal and a weight tracker, to help you stick with the program.

Close

The Mayo Clinic Diet makes healthy eating easy by teaching you how to estimate portion sizes and plan meals. The program doesn't require you to be precise about counting calories. Instead, you'll eat tasty foods that will satisfy you and help you lose weight.

Mayo Clinic experts designed the Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid to help you eat foods that are filling but low in calories. Each of the food groups in the pyramid emphasizes health-promoting choices. The pyramid encourages you to eat virtually unlimited amounts of vegetables and fruits because of their beneficial effects on both weight and health.

The main message is simple: Eat most of your food from the groups at the base of the pyramid and less from the top and move more.

The Mayo Clinic Diet provides practical and realistic ideas for including more physical activity and exercise throughout your day as well as finding a plan that works for you.

The program recommends getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day and even more exercise for further health benefits and weight loss. It provides an exercise plan with easy-to-follow walking and resistance exercises that will help maximize fat loss and boost mental well-being. It also emphasizes moving more throughout the day, such as taking the stairs instead of an elevator.

If you've been inactive or you have a medical condition, talk to your doctor or health care provider before starting a new physical activity program. Most people can begin with five- or 10-minute activity sessions and increase the time gradually.

The Mayo Clinic Diet provides a choice of five different eating styles at several calorie levels. Whether you would like to follow the Mayo Clinic Diet meal plan, are vegetarian or prefer the Mediterranean eating style, you will find an abundance of recipes and meals that won't leave you hungry.

Here's a look at a typical daily meal plan at the 1,200-calorie-a-day level from the Mediterranean eating plan:

What about dessert? You can have sweets but no more than 75 calories a day. For practicality, consider thinking of your sweets calories over the course of a week. Have low-fat frozen yogurt or dark chocolate on Monday, and then hold off on any more sweets for a few days.

The Mayo Clinic Diet is designed to help you lose up to 6 to 10 pounds (2.7 to 4.5 kilograms) during the initial two-week phase.

After that, you transition into the second phase, where you continue to lose 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to 1 kilograms) a week until you reach your goal weight. By continuing the lifelong habits that you've learned, you can then maintain your goal weight for the rest of your life.

Most people can lose weight on almost any diet plan that restricts calories at least in the short term. The goal of the Mayo Clinic Diet is to help you keep weight off permanently by making smarter food choices, learning how to manage setbacks and changing your lifestyle.

In general, losing weight by following a healthy, nutritious diet such as the Mayo Clinic Diet can reduce your risk of weight-related health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and sleep apnea.

If you already have any of these conditions, they may be improved dramatically if you lose weight, regardless of the diet plan you follow.

In addition, the healthy habits and kinds of foods recommended on the Mayo Clinic Diet including lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, beans, fish and healthy fats can further reduce your risk of certain health conditions.

The Mayo Clinic Diet is meant to be positive, practical, sustainable and enjoyable, so you can enjoy a happier, healthier life over the long term.

The Mayo Clinic Diet is generally safe for most adults. It does encourage unlimited amounts of vegetables and fruits.

For most people, eating lots of fruits and vegetables is a good thing these foods provide your body with important nutrients and fiber. However, if you aren't used to having fiber in your diet, you may experience minor, temporary changes in digestion, such as intestinal gas, as your body adjusts to this new way of eating.

Also, the natural sugar in fruit does affect your carbohydrate intake especially if you eat a lot of fruit. This may temporarily raise your blood sugar or certain blood fats. However, this effect is lessened if you are losing weight.

If you have diabetes or any other health conditions or concerns, work with your doctor to adjust the Mayo Clinic Diet for your situation. For example, people with diabetes should aim for more vegetables than fruits, if possible. It's a good idea to snack on vegetables, rather than snacking only on fruit.

10 Best Weight Loss Diet Plans for Men 2022 – Healthline

Posted: October 20, 2022 at 2:04 am

Losing excess fat and reaching a healthy body weight may benefit mens health in numerous ways. For example, a healthy body weight may reduce your risk of many health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and liver disease (1, 2).

In fact, men with obesity have a greater risk of chronic disease than women with obesity because men tend to have more visceral fat, a type of belly fat linked to elevated disease risk (3).

Losing weight may also help improve sexual dysfunction, mobility, depressive symptoms, and mens overall quality of life (4).

However, losing weight the right way is critical. Although restrictive fad diets may cause short-term weight loss, theyre never the right choice for long-term weight maintenance.

Rather, you should focus on finding a healthy, sustainable plan that nourishes your body, meets your specific needs, and can be followed long term perhaps for life.

Research shows that the most effective weight loss strategies for men involve dietary modifications alongside increased physical activity and other behavioral changes not diet alone (5).

Here are 10 healthy diets that may help men lose weight.

Increased protein intake has been shown to promote healthy weight loss. Protein is the most filling macronutrient, meaning that adding it to your meals and snacks may help you feel satisfied (6, 7).

Furthermore, numerous studies reveal that high protein diets are more effective for weight loss than standard protein diets (8).

High protein diets have also been found to preserve muscle mass during weight loss, which helps maintain resting energy expenditure or the number of calories you burn at rest (9, 10).

Whats more, research suggests that men who follow high protein diets are more likely to maintain weight loss over time than men whose diets are lower in protein (11).

The amount of protein you need depends on many factors, including your body size, activity level, and age.

Most high protein diets provide at least 0.6 grams of protein per pound (1.3 grams per kg) of body weight, which is notably higher than the current Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of 0.36 grams per pound (0.8 grams per kg) of body weight (12).

High protein diets can be customized based on your dietary preferences, as there are plenty of animal and plant-based foods that are high in protein, including chicken, fish, eggs, lentils, and tofu.

The Mediterranean diet, which is rich in whole foods like vegetables, fruits, beans, and fish, has been linked to a variety of health benefits, including a reduced risk of heart disease, weight loss, and weight maintenance (13).

A 12-year study in 32,119 people 9,662 of whom were men associated strict adherence to the Mediterranean diet with a reduced risk of excess weight and obesity, as well as smaller waist circumference and a lower risk of belly fat (14).

Other studies bolster these findings, tying the Mediterranean diet to weight loss and a reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes (15, 16, 17).

Whats more, the Mediterranean diet may protect against prostate cancer, the most common type of cancer and second leading cause of cancer death among men in the United States (18, 19).

Most people can benefit from following a whole foods, plant-based (WFPB) diet, including men who want to lose excess body fat.

WFPB diets are not the same as vegan diets, which exclude all animal products.

Instead, WFPB diets include small amounts of animal products like fish, eggs, cheese, chicken, and yogurt, although theyre primarily based on whole plant foods like vegetables, fruits, and beans.

Because of the emphasis on whole plant foods and the exclusion of highly processed foods, WFPB diets are rich in fiber and other beneficial nutrients. Plus, WFPB diets have been shown to promote weight loss.

For example, in a review of 12 randomized controlled studies, people who followed plant-based diets including several that included some animal protein lost significantly more weight over an average of 18 weeks than those assigned to non-plant-based diets (20).

Choosing a WFPB diet may also help men reduce their risk of chronic illnesses, such as certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and mental conditions (21, 22, 23, 24).

Low carb diets are one of the most popular eating patterns and for good reason.

Such diets vary in carb content, from the very low carb keto diet to more flexible, moderate low-carb diets. Low carb eating patterns have been shown to boost weight loss and improve other aspects of mens health.

In a small, 8-week study in 34 older adults with obesity, those assigned to a low carb diet that provided less than or equal to 10% of calories from carbs lost 3 times more visceral fat than those assigned to a standard low fat diet (25).

The low carb diet group also lost nearly 8% more total body fat and retained more muscle mass (25).

Because men are likelier to have more visceral fat than women, any diet that targets this harmful type of body fat may greatly improve mens health and reduce disease risk (3).

Many other studies have demonstrated that low carb diets of varying carb contents encourage weight loss, improve blood fat levels, and decrease blood sugar levels (26, 27).

Research suggests that diets that are more moderate in carbs are easier to maintain long term than very low carb diets (27).

Because one of the most important factors in choosing a diet is the ability to follow it long term, a more moderate carb approach is likely the better choice for sustainable weight loss (27).

Fiber not only helps you feel full but also benefits your health in many other ways, which is why fiber-rich diets are a good choice for weight loss.

Studies consistently associate high fiber diets, including Mediterranean and plant-based diets, with a healthy body weight.

In a 6-month study in 345 people 46% of whom were men those who followed a high fiber diet were most likely to lose weight. On average, every 10-gram increase in daily fiber was tied to a 5-pound (2.2-kg) decrease in body weight (28).

High fiber intake may also help reduce visceral fat and protect against several chronic illnesses in men, including heart disease (29, 30, 31, 32).

To increase your fiber intake, try adding a combination of high fiber foods to every meal and snack. Examples of high fiber foods include berries, broccoli, asparagus, nuts, seeds, beans, oats, avocados, chia seeds, and artichokes.

Energy density refers to a foods calorie content per 100 grams, while nutrient density refers to a foods micronutrient content in relation to its calorie load (33, 34).

Foods that are energy-dense and nutrient-poor include french fries, sugary baked goods, sweetened beverages, and candy (35).

Foods that are low in calories but dense in nutrients include vegetables and fruits. Eating more low calorie, nutrient-dense foods is strongly associated with weight loss and healthy weight maintenance (36, 37, 38).

Yet, high calorie, nutrient-dense foods like nuts, seeds, avocados, egg yolks, and unsweetened full fat yogurt are important for a healthy diet, too. Balancing these foods with low calorie, nutrient-dense foods like veggies and fruits is a smart way to maintain a healthy body weight.

Try eating low calorie, nutrient-dense foods during every meal and snack. For example, add a handful of spinach and chopped red pepper to your morning egg scramble, then sliced vegetables or fruit to your afternoon snack.

The restricts grains, legumes, refined sugars, and dairy products. Its main premise is to reduce your intake of highly processed products and focus instead on whole, nutrient-dense foods that are rich in healthy fats, protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals (39).

Some evidence suggests that this diet is effective for fat loss, which is no surprise since it excludes or limits many foods tied to weight gain, including processed grain products, sugary baked goods, and soda.

A review of 11 randomized studies ranging from 2 weeks to 2 years found that, on average, people who adopted the paleo diet lost 8 pounds (3.5 kg) more than those following other eating patterns (39).

The paleo diet tends to be more filling than traditional low fat eating patterns and may promote healthy blood pressure, blood sugar, and triglyceride levels (40, 41, 42, 43).

Because grains and legumes are off-limits on the paleo diet, youll want to be sure youre eating plenty of vegetables, fruits, chia seeds, and other paleo-friendly foods to reach your daily fiber needs.

The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet combines parts of the Mediterranean and DASH diets. The DASH diet is often used to reduce high blood pressure (22).

The MIND diet emphasizes foods that aid brain health, including berries, olive oil, nuts, beans, green leafy vegetables, and fish. It also recommends limiting potentially harmful foods like sweets and fried foods.

The MIND diet has not only been shown to significantly reduce the risk of brain conditions like Alzheimers disease but also may help men lose weight (22).

Its rich in fiber, healthy fats, and low calorie, nutrient-dense foods like berries and leafy green veggies. It also encourages the use of olive oil, which is associated with healthy body weight maintenance (44).

The MIND diet may be especially helpful for older men who want to preserve their brain health and reduce the risk of cognitive conditions like dementia. In fact, a 2021 study found that adherence to the MIND diet was associated with better cognitive functioning and suggested that the dietary pattern may help contribute to cognitive resilience in older adults (45).

Intermittent energy restriction (IER) is an umbrella term that encompasses both intermittent fasting and time-restricted eating.

Whereas intermittent fasting involves 1648-hour periods of little to no food intake, time-restricted eating limits food intake to a specific time window, usually 610 hours of a given day (46).

Some evidence suggests that IER improves blood sugar regulation, blood pressure, inflammatory markers, triglyceride levels, and weight loss (45).

There are many types of IER, including 16-hour energy restriction, 2-day fasting, and alternate-day fasting.

A review of 27 studies ranging from 224 weeks found that people who followed IER patterns lost 0.813% of their baseline body weight. The review also found that IER improved blood sugar management (47).

However, the researchers acknowledged that most of the studies were small. Thus, further research is needed (47).

All the same, some research suggests that IER may aid fat loss, allow for increased strength during resistance training, and improve certain aspects of psychological health (48, 49).

Men who are interested in IER may want to start with the 16/8 method, which is one of the most popular IER methods.

Even though IER may be effective for some men, its not appropriate for everyone. For example, IER may not be safe for those with diabetes, including those who are dependent on insulin. Fasting could cause blood sugar levels to drop too low, which can cause symptoms like dizziness and fainting.

If you have any medical conditions or are currently taking one or more medications, its best to speak with a healthcare professional before trying IER.

Vegetarian diets are high in plant-based foods, including veggies, fruits, legumes, and whole grains. Some versions, such as ovo-vegetarian and lacto-vegetarian diets, include animal products like milk or eggs.

Research strongly associates vegetarian diets with a healthy body weight and weight loss.

A review of 3 studies that included 20,975 men tied plant-based diets rich in whole plant foods and low in animal foods to less weight gain over a 4-year period (30).

In a study in 10,064 adults, those who followed vegetarian diets consumed 419 fewer calories per day, on average, and ate more legumes and nuts than non-vegetarians. Both of these factors are associated with healthy weight management (50, 51, 52).

Healthy vegetarian diets should be low in refined foods, including highly processed plant-based foods like sugary desserts, sweetened beverages, and fried foods.

Factors such as body weight, age, and the type of diet youre following will influence how quickly you lose weight.

For example, men following very low calorie diets will likely lose weight more rapidly than men following diets with more moderate calorie deficits.

Its important to understand that your goal shouldnt be to lose weight as quickly as possible. Rather, its best to focus on weight loss thats consistent and sustainable.

Some people think that the more extreme the weight loss and calorie deficit, the better.

However, research suggests that taking a more moderate approach to weight loss may counteract some of the compensatory metabolic changes that occur when restricting calories, such as muscle loss and increased hunger (53, 54).

By opting for a smaller daily calorie deficit, you may lose weight a bit more slowly, but it may improve your chances of following your weight loss plan and maintaining your weight loss over time.

In general, most healthcare professionals agree that safe weight loss can vary from 12 pounds (.51 kg) per week, though some men may lose more or less, depending on several factors (55).

If youre concerned that you may be losing weight too quickly or are having trouble losing weight, contact a trusted healthcare professional for advice.

Any weight loss plan can be made gluten-free, but some diets, like the paleo diet, restrict gluten as a rule.

Cutting out gluten isnt necessary for everyone, but people with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity should avoid gluten for health reasons. Studies show that other populations, including those with certain autoimmune diseases, may also benefit from a gluten-diet (56).

The vegan diet restricts all animal products, including meat, fish, and dairy. The vegan diet can help promote weight loss, but its not necessary to cut all animal products from your diet.

Vegan, vegetarian, and plant-based diets that include small amounts of animal products have all been shown to be effective for weight loss (20).

How quickly a man loses weight depends on factors such as age, diet, health status, and activity levels.

How quickly you can lose body fat matters much less to overall health when compared with how likely you are to maintain a healthy body weight in the future. Again, its important to focus on long-term rather than short-term health goals.

If you want to increase your likelihood of weight loss success, pair a nutritious diet that provides the appropriate amount of calories to support fat loss with lifestyle modifications like increasing physical activity, improving sleep quality, and managing stress (57, 58, 59).

Men who want to lose excess body fat have many healthy, sustainable diets to choose from.

Though you may be tempted to follow a restrictive, low calorie diet that promises quick weight loss, its important to choose one that fuels your body, isnt overly restrictive, and can be maintained long term.

To find the best diet for your needs, it may be helpful to work with an experienced healthcare provider like a registered dietitian.

12 Popular Weight Loss Pills and Supplements Reviewed – Healthline

Posted: October 20, 2022 at 1:56 am

There are many possible weight loss solutions out there.

Some options are more popular than others, including certain pills, drugs, and natural supplements. These claim to help you lose weight, or at least to make it easier to lose weight when you combine them with other methods.

They tend to work via one or more of these mechanisms:

Its important to note that few of these treatments have any basis in science and some could have serious health consequences. You should always discuss any diet or supplement changes with a doctor or registered dietitian.

To separate the myths from facts, here are the 12 most popular weight loss pills and supplements, reviewed by science.

Garcinia cambogia became popular worldwide after being featured on The Dr. Oz Show in 2012.

Its a small, green fruit shaped like a pumpkin. The fruits skin contains hydroxycitric acid, the active ingredient in garcinia cambogia extract, which is marketed as a diet pill.

How it works: Animal studies show that it can hinder a fat-producing enzyme in the body and increase serotonin levels, potentially helping to reduce cravings (1, 2).

Effectiveness: In one meta-analysis, researchers explored four electronic research databases to investigate the effectiveness of herbal medicines, including garcinia cambogia.

In a total of 54 randomized controlled trials in healthy adults with overweight or obesity, the authors found no difference in weight or body fat percentage between the garcinia cambogia group and the placebo group (3).

A 2020 review that looked at eight trials on garcinia cambogia found that, on average, it caused weight loss of about 3 pounds (1.34 kg) (4).

Side effects: While its widely agreed that garcinia cambogia is safe to take in recommended amounts, studies within the last few years have pointed to some serious side effects.

A 2018 study documented four cases of women who experienced acute liver failure after taking weight loss supplements containing garcinia cambogia (5).

Additionally, hepatotoxicity, or liver impairment, and some episodes of mania have also been reported in conjunction with taking garcinia cambogia (6, 7).

Even though garcinia cambogia may contribute to modest weight loss, the effects are quite small and may not be noticeable.

Hydroxycut has been around for more than a decade and is one of the most popular weight loss supplements in the world.

The brand makes several products, but the most common is simply called Hydroxycut.

How it works: It contains several ingredients claiming to help with weight loss, including caffeine and a few plant extracts such as green coffee extract, which well talk more about later.

Effectiveness: A 2011 meta-analysis of five clinical trials found that supplementation with C. canephora robusta, or green coffee extract, one of the key ingredients in Hydroxycut, led to about a 5.5-pound (2.47-kg) weight loss compared to the placebo (8).

Side effects: If you are sensitive to caffeine, you may experience anxiety, jitteriness, tremors, nausea, diarrhea, and irritability (9).

Hydroxycut products were removed from shelves as a result of cardiovascular risks in 2004 and hepatotoxicity in 2009 (10).

Acute liver injury has also been connected with using Hydroxycut supplements (11).

There are few large-scale studies on this supplement and no data on its long-term effectiveness. More research is needed to determine effectiveness and safety concerns.

Green coffee beans are simply coffee beans that havent been roasted.

They contain two substances believed to help with weight loss: caffeine and chlorogenic acid.

How it works: Caffeine can increase fat burning, and chlorogenic acid can slow the breakdown of carbohydrates in the gut.

Effectiveness: Several human studies have shown that green coffee bean extract could help people lose weight (12, 13).

A meta-analysis of all the current randomized control trials on green coffee bean extracts effect on obesity found that the supplement has a significant impact on minimizing body mass index (14).

Other benefits: Green coffee bean extract may help lower blood sugar levels and reduce blood pressure. It is also high in antioxidants (15, 16, 17, 18).

Side effects: It can cause the same side effects as caffeine. The chlorogenic acid it contains may also cause diarrhea, and some people may be allergic to green coffee beans (19).

Green coffee bean extract may cause modest weight loss, but keep in mind that many of the studies that have found this have been industry-sponsored.

Caffeine is the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world (20).

It is found naturally in coffee, green tea, and dark chocolate and is added to many processed foods and beverages.

Because caffeine is thought to be a metabolism booster, companies commonly add it to commercial weight loss supplements.

How it works: One study discussed the effect of caffeine on regulating body weight by increasing energy expenditure essentially meaning you burn more calories via increased fat breakdown as well as through a process of body heat production called thermogenesis (21).

Effectiveness: Some studies show that caffeine can cause modest weight loss in humans (22, 23).

Side effects: In some people, high amounts of caffeine can cause anxiety, insomnia, jitteriness, irritability, nausea, diarrhea, and other symptoms. Caffeine is also addictive and can reduce the quality of your sleep (24).

There is no need to take a supplement or a pill containing caffeine. The best sources are quality coffee and green tea, which also have antioxidants and other health benefits (25).

Caffeine could help boost metabolism and enhance fat burning in the short term. However, a tolerance to the effects may develop quickly.

Orlistat is a pharmaceutical drug sold over the counter under the name Alli and via prescription as Xenical.

How it works: This weight loss pill works by inhibiting the breakdown of fat in your gut, meaning that you take in fewer calories from fat.

Effectiveness: A 2003 meta-analysis of studies found that people taking orlistat for 12 months in combination with lifestyle changes saw a 2.9% greater weight reduction than the placebo group (26).

Other benefits: Orlistat has been shown to reduce blood pressure slightly and may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes when used alongside lifestyle changes (27, 28).

Side effects: This drug has many digestive side effects, including loose, oily stools; flatulence; and frequent bowel movements that are hard to control. It may also contribute to deficiency in fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K (29).

Following a low fat diet while taking orlistat is often recommended to minimize side effects. Interestingly, a low carb diet (without medication) has been considered as effective as orlistat and a low fat diet combined.

Both diets were as effective for weight loss but showed no significant differences in blood sugar and blood lipid levels. However, orlistat combined with a low fat diet was more effective at lowering blood pressure (30).

Orlistat, also known as Alli or Xenical, can reduce the amount of fat you absorb from food and help you lose weight. It has many side effects, some of which are highly unpleasant.

Raspberry ketone is a substance found in raspberries that is responsible for their distinct smell.

A synthetic version of raspberry ketones is sold as a weight loss supplement.

How it works: In isolated fat cells from mice, raspberry ketones increase the breakdown of fat and increase levels of a hormone called adiponectin, which is believed to be related to weight loss (32).

Effectiveness: There are very few studies on raspberry ketones in humans, though one 2013 study looked at raspberry ketones along with some other ingredients and found a potential 2% increase in weight loss over 8 weeks when compared with a placebo (31).

One mouse study using massive doses showed some delay in weight gain (32).

However, high doses of raspberry ketones were also associated with higher blood sugar levels and higher levels of ALT, a liver enzyme, indicating liver dysfunction.

Its unknown whether these effects would translate to humans. More research is necessary to determine any benefits and risks.

Side effects: They may cause your burps to smell like raspberries.

There is no evidence that raspberry ketones cause weight loss in humans, and the rat studies that suggest they may work used massive doses. More research is needed.

Glucomannan is a type of fiber found in the roots of the elephant yam, which is also called konjac.

How it works: Glucomannan absorbs water and becomes gel-like. It sits in your gut and promotes a feeling of fullness, helping you eat fewer calories (33).

Effectiveness: One clinical trial showed that taking glucomannan for 60 days could lower body weight among participants with overweight, but only if they were consistently taking the supplement (34).

Other benefits: Glucomannan is a fiber that can feed the friendly bacteria in the intestine. It can also lower blood sugar, blood cholesterol, and triglycerides and works effectively against constipation (35, 36, 37).

Side effects: It can cause bloating, flatulence, and soft stools and can interfere with some oral medications if taken at the same time.

It is important to take glucomannan about half an hour before meals, with a glass of water.

Studies show that the fiber glucomannan, when combined with a healthy diet, can help people lose weight. It also leads to improvements in various health markers.

Meratrim is a relative newcomer on the diet pill market.

Its a combination of two plant extracts Sphaeranthus indicus and Garcinia mangostana that may change the metabolism of fat cells.

How it works: It claims to make it harder for fat cells to multiply, decrease the amount of fat they pick up from the bloodstream, and help them burn stored fat.

Effectiveness: Very few studies about Meratrim exist. One study involved 60 people with obesity placed on a strict 2,000-calorie diet and increased physical activity, with either Meratrim or a placebo.

After 8 weeks, the Meratrim group had lost 11 pounds (5.2 kg) and 4.7 inches (11.9 cm) off their waistlines (38).

Another study suggested that Meratrim had long lasting effects on appetite suppression (39).

Side effects: No side effects have been reported.

One study showed that Meratrim caused weight loss and had a number of other health benefits. However, the study was industry-sponsored, and more research is needed.

Green tea extract is a popular ingredient in many weight loss supplements. This is because numerous studies have shown that the main antioxidant it contains, EGCG, may aid fat burning.

How it works: Green tea extract is believed to hinder enzymes such as pancreatic lipase, which, when combined with reduced fat absorption, can be an effective way to treat obesity (40).

Effectiveness: Many human studies have shown that green tea extract, when paired with exercise, can increase fat burning and cause fat loss, especially in the belly area (41, 42, 43, 44).

Side effects: Green tea extract is generally well tolerated. It does contain some caffeine and may cause symptoms in people who are sensitive to caffeine.

Additionally, all the health benefits of drinking green tea may also apply to green tea extract.

Green tea and green tea extract could increase fat burning slightly and may help you lose belly fat.

CLA has been a popular fat loss supplement for years.

It is known as one of the healthier trans fats and is found naturally in some fatty animal-derived foods like cheese and butter.

How it works: CLA may reduce appetite, boost metabolism, and stimulate the breakdown of body fat (45, 46).

Effectiveness: In a major review of 13 studies, researchers found that CLA caused weight loss of about 1.1 pounds (0.52 kg) compared with a placebo. This number increased to 2.3 pounds (1.05 kg) in people over age 44 (47).

According to another review from 2012, CLA may make you lose about 1.5 pounds (0.7 kg) compared with a placebo. The authors conclude by questioning the clinical relevance of CLAs small effect on body weight (48).

Side effects: CLA can cause various digestive side effects and may have harmful effects over the long term, potentially contributing to fatty liver, insulin resistance, and increased inflammation.

CLA could be an effective weight loss supplement, but it may have harmful effects in the long term. The small amount of weight loss it may lead to is not worth the risk.

Forskolin is an extract from a plant in the mint family that is thought to be effective for weight loss.

How it works: It may raise levels of a compound inside cells called cAMP, which can stimulate fat burning (49).

Effectiveness: One study in 30 men with excess weight or obesity showed that forskolin reduced body fat and increased muscle mass while having no effect on body weight. Another study in 23 women with excess weight found no effects (50, 51).

Side effects: There is minimal data on the safety of this supplement or the risk of side effects.

The two small studies on forskolin have shown conflicting results. Its best to avoid this supplement until more research has been done.

A type of orange called bitter orange contains the compound synephrine.

Synephrine is related to ephedrine, which used to be a popular ingredient in various weight loss pill formulations (52).

However, the FDA has since banned ephedrine as a weight loss ingredient because of serious side effects (53).

How it works: Synephrine has similar mechanisms to ephedrine but is less potent. It could help reduce appetite and increase fat burning (54).

Effectiveness: Very few studies have been done on synephrine, but many studies have found that ephedrine can cause significant short-term weight loss (55).

Side effects: Like ephedrine, synephrine may have serious side effects related to the heart. It may also be addictive.

Synephrine is a fairly potent stimulant and is potentially effective for weight loss in the short term. However, the side effects can be serious, so it should be used only with extreme caution and with a doctors supervision.

How long does it take to lose weight? – Livescience.com

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:04 am

How long does it take to lose weight? In the age of instant gratification and dubious marketing claims, it may be difficult to have realistic expectations. Not to mention that when you feel uncomfortable in your own skin, and your health seems to be getting worse, you may be tempted to set yourself an ambitious weight loss goal.

This is understandable. A big target number may make you feel more motivated and eager to start your transformation. But excessive weight loss can not only lead to the dreaded yo-yo effect (where you lose weight, only to put it back on), it can also be unhealthy. Whats more, some people will find it way more difficult to shed unwanted pounds than others. So what is a realistic weight loss rate? And what factors can affect it?

Before we dive into the science of weight loss, it is important to point out that there is no real ideal weight to aim for. Medical professionals often rely on a persons BMI (opens in new tab) to determine what is deemed to be a normal weight range. But this measurement is not without its flaws.

The number on the scale will not tell you how much muscle mass, as opposed to fat mass, your body contains. It wont indicate whether you struggle with water retention, either. Its therefore important to take an individual approach before setting a weight loss target. And the first step is always to consult a dietician or medical professional for professional advice before embarking on a weight loss program.

Your calorie expenditure that is, the exact number of calories you burn each day is composed of three major components.

The first is referred to as Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR). It consists of the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) the minimum number of calories your body needs to maintain normal bodily functions, such as breathing and pumping blood as well as low-effort daily activities, such as eating, walking for short periods (for example, to use the bathroom), sweating or shivering.

The second component is referred to as the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) the additional energy needed to digest, absorb, and use the nutrients you consume. According to the Journal of the American College of Nutrition (opens in new tab), TEF is increased by larger meal sizes, intake of carbohydrate and protein, as well as low-fat plant-based diets.

The third component is referred to as the Thermic Effect of Activity (TEA) the number of calories burned during exercise. TEA can also include Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) which is the amount of energy expended during light activities such as fidgeting, cooking and shopping.

In order to lose weight, you have to maintain a consistent calorie deficit. When you burn more calories than you consume, your body will dip into the energy reserves stored in your fat tissue. Conversely, when you eat more calories than your body needs, you will start gaining weight.

Now, all food and drink will add to your daily calorie tally, and its interesting to learn how calories are calculated given this is how youll be keeping track of your energy intake. At the same time its also worth noting a couple of myths surrounding energy expenditure and weight loss.

Many believe that eating smaller, more frequent meals can improve your chances of shedding unwanted pounds, for example. But while it is true that some will find this approach helpful for appetite regulation, as scientists from the Nutrition Reviews (opens in new tab) journal point out, there is not enough evidence to claim that meal frequency is linked to calorie burning.

Another misconception is that deep intellectual work can increase your energy expenditure. Unfortunately, thinking doesnt burn calories.

As we get older, our body composition changes. We lose muscle mass and gain more fat. Regular physical activity and a healthy diet can delay this process, and many elderly adults boast great muscle strength and endurance. However, this is not the only implication of the aging process.

As described in the Nutrition (opens in new tab) journal, there is evidence to suggest that the metabolic rates of our internal organs become progressively lower in older people. These organs also become smaller. As a result, they need fewer calories to function properly and this will have a significant impact on our overall energy requirements.

In general, men will find it easier to shed unwanted pounds, but our biological differences are not as straightforward as this. As stated in the Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (opens in new tab) journal, men have a Resting Metabolic Rate thats between 5% and 10% higher than women of a similar frame. This is because women tend to carry more fat than muscle, and fat tissue is less metabolically active.

But this does not automatically mean that women will lose less weight when put on the same diet as men. According to a systematic review published in the Obesity Reviews (opens in new tab) journal, the effect of weight loss interventions are not significantly different between the two sexes, and there is little evidence they should adopt different weight loss strategies. It could be that other factors, not only the body composition, may be at play.

The more physical activity you carry out, the more calories you are able to burn. But time spent working out is not the key factor here intensity is important.

Going for a leisurely walk or attending a gentle yoga class will not have the same effect as running for 10 kilometers. How you exercise and how you progress with your physical activity is equally important to your activity levels.

According to a review published in the Obesity Reviews journal, adding more resistance training to your routine will help you to retain and build more muscle mass. Muscle is a very metabolically active tissue, so more muscle means a higher RMR, and more calories burned at rest.

Some fitness professionals debate whether High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is superior to steady-state cardio (such as cycling or jogging) in terms of the number of calories burned. But as described in the Obesity Reviews (opens in new tab) journal, they both show similar effects on body composition scientists point out that HIIT may be more time-efficient as it requires nearly 40% less training time.

Does drinking water help you lose weight? Hydration definitely plays a role in weight loss, although its effect is not direct. According to the Frontiers in Nutrition (opens in new tab) journal, drinking more water helps to reduce portion control and increase lipolysis the breakdown of fat tissue.

Animal studies also demonstrated that dehydration can lead to hormonal changes that may increase the risk of obesity and associated diseases. Wondering how much water you need to drink? The recommended intake is 2L a day, but the exact amount your body needs will depend on several different factors.

Your genes may be partly to blame for why you struggle to lose weight. As reported in the Genes & Nutrition (opens in new tab) journal, a growing number of studies identify gene variants that are associated with an increase in fat mass. These variants may interact with specific environmental factors and increase the risk of obesity.

Does sleeping burn calories? Not exactly. But maintaining good sleep hygiene can make all the difference to your weight loss efforts. Research in the Nutrients (opens in new tab) journal found that just one sleepless night has been shown to increase your desire for high-calorie, nutrient-poor foods, such as cookies and sugary beverages. Disturbed sleeping patterns tend to lead to increased calorie consumption too.

It will also wreak havoc on the levels of hormones associated with appetite control. A study published in the Sleep (opens in new tab) journal suggests that just an hour less sleep five nights a week may lead to a lower proportion of fat mass loss in individuals on low-calorie diets, despite similar weight loss. Whats more, catch-up sleep may not completely reverse these far-reaching changes in body composition.

Psychological stress is another factor that may impact the rate of your weight loss. The Obesity Reviews (opens in new tab) journal found that feeling under pressure may lower the quality of your sleep, enhance your appetite, intensify your cravings and decrease your motivation to exercise.

At the same time, there is growing evidence (opens in new tab) that the practice of mindful eating can reduce food cravings and increase your chance of achieving your weight loss goals.

Can you take probiotics to lose weight? It may be effective. Scientists are increasingly pointing to gut health as a factor in obesity. According to a review published in the Gastroenterology (opens in new tab) journal, the amount and the type of gut microbes residing in our intestines may dictate the rate of your weight loss.

For example, bacterial strains like Ruminococcus gnavus were found to be more common among obese individuals. Their presence also decreased during weight loss. Meanwhile, the number of bacterial strains such as Akkermansia muciniphila and Alistipes obesi were higher in lean individuals.

Certain hormonal disorders will have an impact on the rate of your weight loss. Hypothyroidism is a good example a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough metabolism-boosting hormones, which in turn can promote weight gain. As reported in the International Journal of Obesity (opens in new tab), higher baseline levels of thyroid hormones were linked to better weight loss outcomes.

How long does it take to lose weight in a healthy and sustainable manner? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (opens in new tab), people should aim for a fairly steady weight loss rate of about one to two pounds a week because this way they are more likely to keep the weight off in the long term.

Yet scientists are questioning this claim. A study published in The Lancet (opens in new tab) journal demonstrated that the rate of weight loss does not seem to affect the proportion of weight regained within 144 weeks.

Another study, published in the Obesity (opens in new tab) journal, found that, in people with a similar total weight loss, the rate at which they lost weight did not affect how many pounds were later piled back on. Nonetheless, those who were prescribed a diet with the least number of calories lost the most muscle mass.

Still, dieticians recommend taking a gradual approach, as it promotes healthier attitudes to food and it is least likely to cause side effects.

If you want to maintain the results in the future, it is recommended to focus on a slow but healthy weight loss where you lose one to 2 lbs per week, says Wendy Lord, registered dietician at HealthReporter (opens in new tab). Although such a journey is slow, its constancy will make it easier to develop healthy eating habits, making it less likely that you will gain weight again, and most importantly, it is much safer than rapid weight loss.

But what about overall weight loss? When healthily losing weight, you can expect to lose up to 8 lbs in a month and even up to 90 in a year. However, it is worth remembering that such impressive numbers will only be realistic if you lose up to 2 lbs per week for the whole year and if you are obese in the first place, says Lord.

What is a dietician's stance on boosting metabolism?

Speeding up weight loss is definitely possible, but it won't necessarily be healthy, advises Lord. Since losing weight too fast can lead to loss of muscle mass, slowed metabolism, lack of nutrients in the body, and many other problems, it is recommended to consult a specialist.

On the other hand, there are certainly a few lifestyle changes that can accelerate the loss of a few pounds without risking your health. Among these, perhaps the most well-known is increasing protein intake so that the body burns fat and does not lose muscle mass. It is also effective to drink green tea because of its caffeine or to reduce the consumption of starchy and floury dishes.

Protein is particularly good for weight loss. As mentioned previously, increasing the intake of this macronutrient will elevate the Thermic Effect of Food. It is also crucial to building lean muscle mass. Protein also helps lower food cravings and regulate appetite.

Countless dietary supplements claim to help you lose weight. They tend to be sold as metabolism boosters and fat burners, promising amazing results in no time. But are they actually able to speed up your weight loss? In most cases, there is no evidence (opens in new tab) they can deliver on the promise. But that does not mean that every supplement is a waste of money.

Many weight loss supplements contain high doses of caffeine. And according to a meta-analysis published in the Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition (opens in new tab), for every doubling in the caffeine intake, the reduction in weight, BMI, and fat mass may increase almost twofold. This is because this compound increases thermogenesis, and, unsurprisingly, increases your energy levels during workouts.

However, it is important to maintain a reasonable intake of caffeine, particularly if you are sensitive to it. As stated in the Sports Medicine (opens in new tab) journal, ingestion of 39 mg/kg of body weight approximately 60 min prior to exercise is the recommended way to power up your workout. That could be in the form of caffeinated drinks, or dietary supplements.

Another dietary supplement worth considering is a green tea extract. As reported in the Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition (opens in new tab), green tea compounds (such as caffeine and catechins) can increase thermogenesis and increase fat lipolysis.

However, not every green tea supplement is produced to the same standard. Multiple studies (opens in new tab) have shown that those containing doses of EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate) between 100 and 460 mg a day have shown the best effects on body fat and body weight reduction in trials lasting more than 12 weeks.

Role of Non-pharmacological Interventions and Weight Loss in the Management of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease in Obese Individuals: A Systematic…

Posted: September 2, 2022 at 2:09 am

Various epidemiological studies have shown that the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is increasing worldwide, and the major contributing factor to this trend is the rising prevalence of obesity. The worldwide estimated prevalence of GERD ranges from 15% to 25%. Western countries, including the United State of America, haveaGERD prevalence higher than in Asia, ranging from 10% to 30% [1,2]. Other than obesity, several environmental and lifestyle factors also contribute to this increasing trend, such as being overweight, smoking, and consumption of alcohol, caffeine, fat, and chocolate (these factors indirectly lead to obesity and overweight) [3].In addition, estrogen also has an important role in the development of GERD; one study suggested that pre-menopausal and women on hormone replacement therapy are noticed to have a higher incidence of GERD symptoms [4].Lifestyle modifications, including weight loss, elevation of the head ofbed, smoking cessation, and avoiding late evening meals, lead to the resolution of GERD symptoms[5].One ofthe previous cohortstudies concluded that, in obese individuals, having a low-carbohydrate diet results in the improvement of reflux symptoms[6].

Most of the studies have found a positive correlation between obesity and GERD. Obesity has been defined as having BMI >30 kg/m2 in most of these studies. Four previous cross-sectional studies confirmed a positive association between overweight or obesity and GERD symptoms in the US, UK, Norwegian, and Spanish populations. Two studies have shown a dose-response relationship[7]. The primary mechanism by which obesity promotes GERD isunclear;recent data suggests that obesity increases the intragastric pressure causing relaxation of the lower esophagealsphincter (LES)and reflux of gastroduodenalcontents causing the symptoms of heartburn, acid regurgitation, and eventually causing erosive esophagitis[8].Erosive esophagitis eventually causes Barrett's esophagus, thus increasing the risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma.Treatment of GERD includesconservative and medical therapies. Recent studies suggested that the long-term use of and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can cause several adverse effects.

A retrospective cohort study conducted by Bang and Park in 2018 concluded a positive association between a higher BMI and the development of GERD and erosive esophagitis. Conversely, this study also suggested that a decrease in the BMI can lead to the resolution of erosive esophagitis, and weight loss is a potentially effective treatment of GERD [3].Furthermore, it is noticed that in obese individuals, asymptomatic GERD is more common than symptomatic reflux disease[9].

Although many studies have shown that GERD is associated with obesity, not all studies have shown a positive association. For example, two extensive population-based studies from Sweden and Denmark found no association. Researchers assumed that the disparity in results might be due to the non-adjustment of confounding variables[7]. In addition, weight loss had an independent effect on reflux symptoms in an obese individual. Still, wecouldn't find sufficient data to suggest the positive impact of weight loss achieved through different methods, either with lifestyle modification or with surgical procedures (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or vertical band gastroplasty), on GERD symptoms[10].Thissystematicreview aims to assess non-pharmacological interventions for GERD treatment and the impact of weight loss on GERD in obese patients.

Study Design andSearch Strategy

This systematic review was designed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to improve reporting of this review [11]. We thoroughly searched through the following databases: PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), Science Direct, and Google Scholar, using suitable keywords and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms to extract all the relevant articles. Weused the Boolean scheme and MeSH strategy to form keywords. The MeSH strategy used was (Obesity/diet therapy"[Mesh] OR Obesity/drug therapy"[Mesh] OR Obesity/prevention and control"[Mesh]) AND (Gastroesophageal Reflux/diet therapy"[Majr] OR Gastroesophageal Reflux/drug therapy"[Majr] OR Gastroesophageal Reflux/prevention and control"[Majr] OR Gastroesophageal Reflux/therapy"[Majr]). For other databases, we used the following keywords: Obesity, Obesity AND GERD, Weight loss AND GERD, Obesity AND weight loss AND GERD. We removed duplicates by carefully scrutinizing the titles, and subsequently, we excluded irrelevant articles by screening the titles and abstract.

Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria

In this review, we included articles published in the English language, focusing on the adult population (18-65 years) and papers relevant to the research question. We excluded papers focusing on pediatric and geriatric populations and unpublished and grey literature.

Data Extraction

After we did the quality assessment, data extraction from the eligible papers included in the study was done. Two researchers did data selection and extraction (first and second authors). We reviewed the study design, relevance to our inclusion and exclusion criteria, intervention used, and outcomes measured in the selected paper.

Quality Assessment of the Studies

We used the Joanna Briggs Institute(JBI) critical appraisal checklist for cross-sectional studies and the Newcastle-Ottawa assessment tool for other observational studies (case-control, cohort). In addition, weused the assessment of multiple systematic reviews(AMSTAR) tool for the quality appraisal of the systematic reviews.

A total of 5922 papers were found after the database search. After removing 3379 duplicates,2543 articles remained. Then screening was done through titles, and we removed 2477 articles because of irrelevance, leaving 66 articles. Next, we checked the availability of full-text articles and pulled 43 out of 66 because of the unavailability of full-text articles, and a total of 23 articles remained. Then critical appraisal was done using different quality assessment tools, and a total of eight articles were found eligible to be included in our study after quality assessment.Out of eight papers, five were cross-sectional studies, three cohort studies, and one was a systematic review. The complete PRISMA flow diagram is well explained in Figure 1 [11].

We set the cut-off for bias at 20% or less to be included in this study (Table 1).

Out of five cross-sectional studies, four concluded that obese and overweight individuals have an increased risk of GERD. Obesity causes disintegration of LES and reflux of acidic gastric content in the esophagus, increasing the risk of erosive esophagitis. One cross-sectional study investigated the benefits of weight loss on GERD symptoms. All three cohort studies reported that weight loss could lead to the resolution of GERD and erosive esophagitis in obese patients. One systematic review investigated the impact of lifestyle intervention on GERD symptoms. That review also reported several adverse effects of the long-term use of proton pump inhibitors. The study concluded that because of some complications and the high costof PPIs, lifestyle interventions, especially weight loss, should be used as first-line management for GERD in obese individuals.

The reflux of gastroduodenal contents from the stomach into the esophagus due to any anatomical defect at the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) is defined as gastroesophageal reflux disease[12]. Over the last few decades, the prevalence of GERD has been increasing worldwide. Most of studies have found that this increase is due to the increase in the prevalence of obesity worldwide [10]. Obesity is an independent risk factor for developing GERD symptoms, and several studies have been conducted to find a positive association between BMI and GERD.Jacobsonet al. conducted a case-control study in 2006 and found that BMI is directly associated with GERD irrespective of whether the individual is with normal weight or overweight[16].Obesity has been associated with various comorbidities including diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases; however, gastrointestinal disorders including GERD, gall stones and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are more frequent in obese individuals [17,18]. Miliet al. conducted a study in 2014 and concluded that NAFLD is associated with obesityand the main treatment option for NAFLD would be weight reduction and life style modification[19].

Pathophysiology

The intra-abdominal pressure theory states that obesity in general and abdominal obesity increase intragastric pressure that causes mechanical stress on the gastroesophageal junction, causing transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation (TLOSR) and predisposition of the hiatus hernia, which further facilitates reflux. The dietary habit theory suggests that some nutritional habits may be the main reason for increasing the risk of obesity and eventually increasing GERD risk. Both approaches are based on assumptions [13]. Hiatus hernia in obese individuals causes disturbances in the integrity of GEJ, thus aggravating reflux [20]. Obesity may cause humoral changes such as changes in leptin and insulin levels and hormonal changes such as changes in estrogen levels, which indirectly cause GERD [7]. Not enough evidence supports these mechanisms, so further studies are required to explore them.

A study conducted by Wuet al. in 2007 concluded that abnormal relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LOS) might cause obesity-related GERD [14]. In this study, patients were divided into three groups: obese (BMI >30 kg/m2), overweight (BMI 25-30), and average weight (BMI <25), according to the World Health Organization (WHO). During the postprandial period, esophageal manometry and pH monitoring were done using the standard method. It was noted that TLOSRrates were higher in obese and overweight subjects. It was speculated that obese patients tend to overeat, causing an increase in intragastric pressure and gastric distention, disrupting the integrity of the LOS and causing acid reflux. Esophageal manometry was done in obese individuals before bariatric surgery and most of the people were noted to have motility disorder; this could be another reason for GERD in overweight individuals [21].

Non-pharmacological Interventions

Although obesity is a significant independent risk factor for GERD, several other factors are also noted to play an essential role in GERD development. In a recent retrospective cohort study conducted by Bang and Park, it was stated that GERD is associated with some dietary habits, for example, late-night meals, consumption of alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, fat, and smoking [3]. The intake of citrus fruit is also noted toaggravatethe GERD symptoms [22]. Non-pharmacological interventions, including smoking cessation, avoiding late-night meals, reducing the consumption of alcohol and caffeine, and behavioral changes such as weight loss, can lead to the resolution of GERD symptoms [3,5]. Another study suggested that elevating the head of the bed in the supine position and lying on the left side helps to improve reflux symptoms [23]. Furthermore, regular physical activity was noted to have a positive effect on GERD symptoms [24,25].

Smoking Cessation

Most studies have shown a positive association between smoking and GERD symptoms. In a recent systematic review conducted by Ness-Jensen et al., it was revealed that smoking reduces the LOS pressure facilitating reflux [5]. Also, it causes decreased secretion of salivary bicarbonate, eventually decreasing acid buffering. Another study concluded that smoking cessation was associated with decreased reflux symptoms in normal weight individuals. However, in obese individuals, obesity was the leading cause of GERD, so smoking cessation didn't help much in that group [5].

Lifestyle Modification

Some studies showed a positive association between some dietary habits, lifestyle factors, and the development of GERD symptoms, but previous data supporting these facts are scarce. For example, a randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted with a small sample size (only 15 patients) showed that the elevation of the head of the bed decreased the time for which lower esophageal pH was <4 [5]. Another RCT demonstrated that an increased dietary fat intake causes more time without heartburn symptoms. A systematic review has shown that a high fiber intake and moderate physical activity can reduce GERD symptoms [5]. Arecent cohort study suggested that adjusting meal size and timing, i.e., avoiding late-night meals, is reported to be helpful for the management of GERD [3]. Although physical activity helps to improve the symptoms, but vigorous exercise after a meal can worsenthe condition. Post-dinner walking is recommended to relieve the reflux and heartburn, but eating before exercise should be avoided [26].

Weight Loss as a Management of GERD

Many observational and experimental studies confirmed the association between a high BMI and GERD. A retrospective cohort study was conducted in 2018 to investigate whether a decreased BMI can resolve erosive esophagitis (EE) [3]. All the participants underwent upper GI endoscopyand EE was classified according to Los Angeles (LA) classification; the baseline BMI wasnoted and all patients were instructed to lose weight. During five-year follow-up periods, the EE resolution rate was higher in subjects who had a decrease in BMI >2 kg/m2;the researchers concluded that a significant weight loss is required for EE resolution because some of the patients who had a reduction in BMI <1 kg/m2 did not show any positive effects [3]. Weight loss reduces intragastric pressure and pressure on the gastroesophageal junction, thus reducing the reflux episodes [10]. An RCT of 17 patients reported normalization of the esophageal pH with weight loss in a follow-up period of four months.

A cross-sectional study conducted in 2006 suggested that weight loss is an effective treatment for GERD. Still, two other studies showed contradictory results, stating that a reduction in the BMI does not cause improvement in healing rates after proton pump inhibitor use [15]. Other than heartburn and acid regurgitation, some extraesophageal manifestations of GERD include cough, hoarseness, asthma, sore throat, sinusitis, and globus sensation. There is a significant and nonlinear relationship between a higher BMI and GERD with extraesophageal manifestations reported in a previous study conducted by Aslam et al. The study concluded that an increased BMI is significantly associated with esophageal acid exposure and these findings suggest the benefit of weight loss in the treatment of GERD [13].Fraser-Moodie et al. conducted a prospective cohort study in 2014 to assess an independent effect of weight loss on the improvement of GERD symptoms [12]. This study found that weight loss is the first line of management in treating GERD in overweight patients. Weight loss either achieved through lifestyle interventions or through bariatric surgery was noticed to have improvement in symptoms of GERD [27].

Individuals can use different strategies to lose weight, including physical activity, dietary modifications, and behavioral changes. Physical activity can include walking or some other exercises. In a prospective cohort study, overweight patients were followed for six months for weight loss. Weight loss was achieved through different conservative measures, such as increasing physical activity, some dietary modifications that reduced the daily calorie intake to 1200-1500 cal/day, and some behavioral changes, including goal-setting, self-monitoring, feedback, reinforcement, and social support. Most patients lost weight, and with a structured weight loss program, GERD symptoms were entirely resolved. In addition, a dose-response relationship was reported between weight loss and the resolution of GERD symptoms [10]. But not all obese patients in this study had a reduction in GERD symptoms after losing weight [5].

Why Is Weight Loss More Effective Than PPIs for GERD SymptomResolution in Obese Patients?

Treatment options for gastroesophageal reflux disease include conservative measures and medical treatment. Conservative measures, as already mentioned, include weight loss, if the patient is obese and overweight, the elevation of the bed head, avoiding late-night meals, and reducing the consumption of alcohol, fat, caffeine, and chocolate intake [3,5]. Medical treatment is commonly achieved through antacids, H2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs), and proton pump inhibitorsfor heartburn and acid regurgitation [28]. PPIs work by inhibiting the acid secretion from parietal cells. Additionally, if symptoms are non-responsive to medical treatment or complications havedeveloped, then surgical treatment is also recommended especially in the presence of hiatal hernia [29].

Initially, PPIs were mainly used for treating GERD symptoms, but recently, some studies suggested that the long-term use of proton pump inhibitors can cause some adverse effects. Now that awareness about the side effects of PPIs has increased, lifestyle modification is preferred. For example, withdrawal of PPIs induces reflux symptoms. Other adverse effects include hypergastrinemia and rebound acid secretion. In addition, due to increased gastric pH, the risk of enteric infection and community-acquired pneumonia is increased. There is also an increased risk of hip fractures because of malabsorption of calcium [5].

Another study suggested that obese individuals require a long-term use of H2RAs and antacids for heartburn and reflux symptoms, concluding that obese individual are not as responsive to medications for GERD. Lifestyle interventions, including weight loss and smoking cessation, having a low economic cost and no harmful side effects, should be preferred for GERD treatment. Although proton pump inhibitors positively impact the resolution of GERD symptoms and extensive data supports these positive results, very few RCTs and observational studies are available investigating the positive effects of lifestyle interventions on GERD.

Weight loss should be used as the first-line treatment for GERD in obese and overweight patients because of its low-cost effects, preventing complications of GERD, and improving the quality of life. It was estimated in a recent study that around 10 billion US dollars a year are spent on medical treatment of GERD, and that is considered a burden on the healthcare system [10]. However, there are a few limitations of our study. Extensive data is available reporting the positive association between obesity and GERD development, but studies suggesting the impact of weight loss on GERD are scarce. We could not find sufficient RCTs and observational studies suggesting that weight loss is an effective treatment for GERD.

Further studies, including clinical trials for evaluating the effect of weight loss on symptoms of reflux, are required. Two extensive studies reporting the impact of weight loss on GERD produced contradictory conclusions [15]. Another limitation is that our research does not apply to the pediatric and geriatric population; it is only limited to the adult population (18-65 years).

On A Diet But Not Losing Weight? Heres What Nutritionist Lovneet Batra Has To Say – NDTV Doctor

Posted: September 2, 2022 at 2:03 am

As per the nutritionist, a weight loss of 0.2 to 0.9 kilograms a week is the typical ideal recommendation.

A slow and steady approach is key to healthy weight loss

When you are on a diet aimed at shedding those extra kilograms, it can be frustrating to see little to no loss. While losing weight can be a long process, the slow and steady approach is best recommended, as per nutritionist Lovneet Batra. In a video on Instagram, the nutritionist shares that it is not uncommon for people to say that they are not losing weight despite eating smaller quantities. Addressing this, Lovneet states in a note: It's tempting to buy into promises of fast and amazing weight loss. A slow and steady approach is a bit difficult to keep up. A weight loss of 0.2 to 0.9 kilograms a week is the typical recommendation.

The nutritionist explains that successful weight loss requires a long-term commitment to making healthy lifestyle changes in terms of diet, physical exercise and other habits.

Lovneet adds, Focus on eating right foods in appropriately sized portions is more important than eating less. Rather than focusing on calories alone, quality is also key in determining what we should eat and what we should avoid in order to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

It is not just the calorific value that is important, Lovneet adds, Rather than choosing foods based only on caloric value, choose high-quality, healthy foods, and minimising low-quality foods. Eating less amounts of unhealthy foods, severely cutting calories or removing entire food groups cannot be the long-term approach.

See the post here:

In another post, Lovneet Batra also lists some foods that can aid in weight loss. As per her Instagram post, focussing on feeding one's body healthier foods is always a more efficient weight loss strategy than cutting out entire food groups.

Lovneet Batra says that papayas, lentils, amla, vegetables and coconut water also aid weight loss.

18 Healthy Foods for Your Weight Loss Journey

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:12 am

Healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes. While weight loss is not a magic bullet for health, and not everyone needs to pursue weight loss, it might be something you want to work toward to feel your healthiest.

Coupled with regular movement, your diet can affect your health outcomes. (Just make sure to talk with a healthcare professional before making drastic changes!)

If losing weight is your goal, these 18 foods may help support a healthy weight loss journey, according to science.

Once feared for being high in cholesterol, whole eggs have been making a comeback.

These fears were rooted in misconceptions that overlooked how your body regulates cholesterol levels. Your body sources it, as needed, from your diet or your liver to maintain its baseline levels (1).

While people with elevated baseline levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol should be more conscious of how much cholesterol they get in their diet, moderate egg consumption between 712 eggs a week has been proven safe for many people (1, 2, 3, 4).

Although a higher intake of eggs may raise the levels of LDL cholesterol in some people, eggs are one of the best foods to eat if youre looking to reach or maintain a healthier weight.

Eggs are incredibly nutrient-dense. Interestingly, almost all its nutrients are found in the yolks like choline and vitamin D though egg whites deliver 46 grams of protein each (5).

Because theyre high in protein and fat, they help you feel full (6, 7).

Thats key, because responding to your bodys internal fullness and hunger cues can help you reach or maintain a healthy weight. In other words, getting in the habit of eating when youre hungry and stopping when youre full can help your weight loss goals (8, 9).

A study including 50 healthy people with more weight showed that eating eggs and buttered toast for breakfast instead of cereal, milk, and orange juice increased feelings of satiety (fullness) for the next 4 hours (10).

Similarly, another study among 48 healthy adults found that those who ate an egg-based breakfast, either high or moderate in both protein and fiber, reported higher satiety than those who ate low fiber cereal and milk (11).

Since feeling satiated can help combat overeating driven by feeling overly hungry, eating eggs may support your weight loss goals while also packing a ton of healthful nutrients into your day.

Leafy greens include kale, spinach, collard greens, Swiss chard, and a few others.

They have several properties that make them perfect for reaching or maintaining a healthy weight. For example, they pack fiber and nutrients that keep you satiated and hydrated.

Whats more, leafy greens contain thylakoids, plant compounds that have been linked with increased satiety and better appetite management in at least two human studies (12, 13, 14).

Its worth noting, however, that both studies are small, and participants took a 5-gram thylakoid supplement the amount found in about 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of raw spinach (13, 14).

Those receiving even a single dose of the supplement reported better appetite management, resulting in weight loss (13, 14).

However, more research in humans is needed to understand the effect of thylakoids from food sources as a tool for achieving a healthy weight as well as their long-term effects in supplement form.

In the meantime, leafy greens boast an assortment of fiber and micronutrients and are almost always a great addition to your diet (15, 16).

Adding leafy greens to your diet can help you feel satiated and reduce cravings for less nutritious foods. Learning to respond to your bodys internal cues of hunger and fullness can aid your larger healthy weight loss goals (8, 9).

If youre taking medications, such as blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin), speak with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian about how many leafy greens you should eat daily to find the right balance.

Leafy greens are high in vitamin K, which may interact with your medication. Consistent vitamin K intake is key (17).

Fatty fish like salmon are incredibly nutritious and very satisfying.

Salmon is loaded with high quality protein, healthy fats, and various important nutrients. That combination keeps you satiated and can help you reach a healthier weight (18).

Salmon is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which may help reduce inflammation. Inflammation plays a major role in obesity and metabolic disease (19, 20, 21).

Whats more, fish and seafood, in general may also supply a significant amount of iodine.

The nutrient is necessary for proper thyroid function, which is important to keep your metabolism running optimally (22).

But studies show that a significant number of people dont fill their iodine needs. Adding fatty fish to your diet can help you consume enough iodine (22).

Mackerel, trout, sardines, herring, tuna, and other types of fatty fish are also excellent for your health.

Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts.

Like other vegetables, theyre high in fiber and tend to be incredibly filling.

Whats more, these types of veggies contain decent amounts of protein. Theyre not nearly as high in protein as animal foods or legumes, but still high for vegetables (23, 24, 25, 26).

A combination of protein, fiber, and low energy density (low calorie content) makes cruciferous vegetables the perfect foods to include in your meals if you want to lose weight (27).

Theyre also highly nutritious and contain compounds that may lower your risk of developing cancer. Keep in mind, though, that no amount of cruciferous vegetables can replace recommended cancer screenings or proper cancer treatment (28).

Meat remains a controversial food group for many people.

Beyond issues of sustainability and ethics, were still not sure whether and how red meat raises the risk of heart disease or diabetes.

Research on meat consumption and health outcomes has yielded low evidence of causation.

That language can be confusing, and its often misinterpreted as a ringing endorsement to eat more meat, but it simply means that there isnt enough evidence to say whether it causes unfavorable health outcomes (29, 30).

However, a high intake of red and processed meats is associated with a higher risk of cancer, diabetes, premature death, and heart disease (31).

Eating unprocessed meat in moderation (i.e., 23 servings a week) alongside fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may mitigate some of the cancer risks associated with meat consumption (30).

Nutritionally, chicken and red meat are both high in protein and iron.

Skinless chicken breast and lean red meat like tenderloin or flank steak pack protein and iron and have less saturated fat than other cuts. Opt for these most of the time to better support weight management and heart health.

Saturated fat has been thought to drive inflammation, which is associated with chronic illness. However, research on this, too, has so far yielded mixed results (32, 33).

How you prepare meat can also affect health outcomes.

Red meat that is cooked at high temperatures for a long duration, by smoking or grilling, for instance, renders fat drippings. Against hot cooking surfaces, these form a toxic by-product called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that may cause cancer (34).

Minimize this risk by limiting smoke, wiping away drippings, and eating lean meat in moderation. This means no more than a few 3-ounce (85-gram) servings per week. A serving is about the size of the palm of your hand (34).

White potatoes seem to have fallen out of favor possibly, at least in part, due to the rise of lower carb diets.

For what its worth, potatoes and other root vegetables have several properties that make them wonderful foods for weight loss and optimal health.

They contain an incredibly diverse range of nutrients a little bit of almost everything you need.

Theyre particularly high in potassium, a nutrient that most people dont get enough of. Potassium plays an important role in blood pressure management (35).

On a scale called the Satiety Index, which measures how filling different foods are, boiled white potatoes scored the highest of all the foods tested (36).

What this means is that by eating boiled white or sweet potatoes, youre more likely to naturally feel full. Youll also be providing your body with essential nutrients.

If you allow potatoes to cool for a while after boiling, they will form high amounts of resistant starch, a fiber-like substance that has been shown to have various health benefits, including weight loss (37).

Sweet potatoes, turnips, and other root vegetables are also excellent choices.

Tuna is another satiating high protein food.

Its a lean fish, meaning it has protein, which helps keep you full, as well as healthy fats. Among these healthy fats is docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a form of omega-3 fatty acid, which may benefit your heart (22, 38, 39).

Eating fish like salmon and tuna can be a great way to increase your protein intake, with nutritious fish fats to support your eyes and brain (39, 40, 41).

If youre eating tuna canned, choose varieties canned in water if youre aiming to eat fewer calories. Tuna packed in oil ups the calories, fat, and sodium, but could be more filling. It depends on what your needs are that day (42).

Beans and other legumes can be beneficial for weight loss. These include lentils, black beans, kidney beans, and some others.

Those foods tend to be high in protein and fiber, which are two nutrients that promote satiety. They also tend to contain some resistant starch (43, 44, 45).

Due to their high fiber content, beans can cause gas and bloating in some people. Preparing them properly can help mitigate these side effects, though. Try buying your beans dry and soaking them for several hours before preparing.

Soup can be a delicious way to increase your intake of vegetables and whole grains you may not get enough of otherwise. However, soup varieties that are cream-based or that include processed meats arent going to provide the same nutritional boost.

Between the slurping, smelling, tasting, cooling, and chewing, soup takes some people longer to eat than other foods. Eating slowly may help you eat more mindfully. It could also help keep you from eating past fullness (46, 47, 48).

Feeling satisfied and nourishing your body while listening and responding to your bodys hunger and fullness cues are important in reaching and maintaining a healthy weight.

If you would like a richer soup, there are ways to increase its creaminess without the use of heavy cream, which can add less healthy saturated fat.

Try blending in avocado, which helps increase the fiber count of your soup, or cashews. You can also slice avocado on top as a garnish to the soup (49, 50).

Because soups are inherently liquids, and therefore hydrate you, they may promote fullness and support weight management. Incorporating a vegetable-based clear soup before your meal can be a way to feel more satisfied and to lose weight healthfully (51).

Dairy products tend to be high in protein.

One of the most protein-rich dairy products is cottage cheese, which is mostly protein.

Eating cottage cheese is a great way to boost your protein intake, which is important for building and maintaining muscle. Its also very satiating and high in calcium.

There may even be a relationship between calcium intake and healthy weight, but more research is needed in this area (52, 53).

Other high protein dairy products include Greek yogurt and skyr.

Avocados are unique fruits.

While most fruits are high in carbs, avocados are instead loaded with healthy fats. Theyre particularly high in monounsaturated oleic acid, the same type of fat found in olive oil.

Despite being mostly fat, avocados also contain a lot of water and fiber, making them greatly satiating.

Whats more, theyre a perfect addition to vegetable-based salads, as studies show that their fat content can increase how much of the carotenoid antioxidants your body absorbs from vegetables. In fact, it may increase absorption by 4.612.6 times (54).

In fact, they help absorb other important fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K). Avocados also contain many important nutrients, including fiber and potassium.

Its worth keeping in mind that avocados are energy-dense, so being mindful of portions is key when weight loss is your goal. The more you practice taking your bodys internal hunger and fullness cues, the more you can intuitively tell what the right amount is for you at that time (8, 9).

Nuts are high fat foods that also provide you with protein, fiber, and other plant compounds that benefit heart health (55, 56).

They make excellent snacks since they contain balanced amounts of protein, fiber, and healthy fats (57).

Studies have shown that eating nuts can improve metabolic health and even promote weight loss (58).

Whats more, population studies have shown that people who eat nuts tend to get more nutrients and be at a healthier weight than those who dont (59).

Like any high fat food, youll want to be mindful that youre eating only to the point of satiety. So, do mind your portion sizes if your goal is to lose weight.

Try eating a handful of unsalted nuts at first, and see how you feel after about 1520 minutes. If you still feel hungry, try half of another handful and give yourself some time to digest.

Recent studies show that a diet rich in whole grains can help support healthy weight loss (60).

Cereal grains can be wholesome parts of your diet and may benefit your metabolic health (61).

Thats because theyre loaded with fiber and contain a decent amount of protein. Notable examples include oats, brown rice, and quinoa.

Oats are loaded with beta-glucans, which are soluble fibers that may increase satiety and improve metabolic health (62, 63).

Both brown and white rice can contain significant amounts of resistant starch, particularly if cooked and then allowed to cool afterward.

While white rice is certainly OK, brown rice packs added nutrients especially fiber which may support your healthy weight loss journey.

Keep in mind that refined grains (i.e., white bread and most commercial baked goods) are OK, as long as you eat them in moderation and dont make them the foundation of your diet.

Also remember that sometimes, foods with whole grain on the label are ultra-processed, and they can contribute to unwanted weight gain when eaten in excess.

Eating chili peppers may be useful on a weight loss diet.

They contain capsaicin, a substance that makes hot peppers like chilis spicy.

Some studies show that capsaicin can improve how fast your body metabolizes fat and can increase your sensation of fullness. Together, these may support your healthy weight loss journey (64, 65).

The substance is even sold in supplement form and is a common ingredient in many commercial weight loss supplements. Thats because studies show that capsaicin supplements may increase metabolism.

A review study found that this effect only yielded an average of 33 calories more burned per day than those who did not supplement with capsaicin, though. More research is needed to learn about this effect, especially in regards to capsaicin from food sources (66, 67, 68).

Plus, there was no effect in people who were accustomed to eating spicy food, indicating that a certain level of tolerance can build up (69).

Most health experts agree that fruit is healthy.

Man Hospitalized After Months Of Vomiting And Weight Loss. The Culprit? Vitamin D – IFLScience

Posted: July 8, 2022 at 2:02 am

We all know taking vitamin supplements is mostly pointless, but could they be actively dangerous? A recent medical case out of the UK has doctors warning precisely that, after one mans excessive vitamin D intake sent him to the emergency room.

Published in the journal BMJ Case Reports, physicians describe how the patient was referred to the hospital with a wide range of symptoms: recurrent vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, leg cramps, ringing in his ears, dry mouth, increased thirst, and diarrhea. And if that wouldnt be enough to send you to the doctor, hed also lost 12.7 kilograms (28 pounds) in weight.

This had all started about three months earlier, which coincidentally was about one month after the patient had begun a new vitamin regimen. Apparently on the advice of a private nutritionist, he had been taking a daily dose of deep breath 150,000 IU (3750 micrograms) of vitamin D; 1,000 milligrams of folate; 4,000 milligrams of omega-3; 50 milligrams of vitamin B3; as well as various doses of vitamins C, K2, B2, B6, and selenium, zinc, iodine, l-lysine, taurine, glycine, choline, calcium, magnesium, probiotics and, for some reason, borax.

Now, vitamins and minerals are generally good and healthy, but as with all things, the key is in the dosage you get. Take vitamin D, for example by far the biggest dose the patient was taking. Its a very important vitamin, and deficits can cause horrible things like rickets in children and the defective or incomplete mineralization of bones in adults. That, in turn, can cause bone deformities, seizures, dental problems, and a whole range of other problems.

Because its so important, it has been made easy to get. Its added to milk, by law in places like Canada, Sweden, Finland, and Australia, and voluntarily in other countries like the US and UK. Its sometimes added to cereals and bread, too. And even without all those regulations, its also possibly the only vitamin you can get totally free of charge your body will make it on its own if you simply enjoy the sunshine for half an hour.

And that, for most people, will be enough. According to one study, the percentage of people in Finland getting sufficient vitamin D levels more than doubled after 2003, when vitamin D started being added to milk by law. Thats because you only need around 400 IU, or 10 micrograms per day to keep healthy a number you may recognize as being less than 1/80ththe dose the patient was actually taking.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin in the body, along with vitamins A, E, and K, the authors write. As a result, it undergoes widespread adipose tissue distribution.

And so, they explain, manifestations of vitamin D intoxication are often multisystemic, ranging from neuropsychiatric symptoms like drowsiness, confusion, apathy, psychosis, depression, stupor, and even coma, to gastrointestinal problems like abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, peptic ulcers, and pancreatitis, to cardiovascular symptoms such as hypertension and heart arrhythmia, to severe renal problems and kidney failure.

And even worse, vitamin D has an extremely long half-life so an overdose can keep you sick for several weeks. By the time the man made it to the hospital, he had already stopped taking the supplements, and yet his symptoms were still present and clinical testing revealed acute kidney injury, as well as very high levels of calcium and vitamin D levels that were seven times higher than normal recommendations.

The good news is that the patient recovered although as of the date of the case report, his vitamin D levels remain unusually high, and hes still being monitored on an outpatient basis. He had to stay in hospital for eight days total, during which time he was rehydrated with intravenous fluids and given bisphosphonate treatments to prevent bone thinning. He also received counseling before he was discharged, and continued taking bisphosphonates and anti-emetics after leaving the hospital.

Globally, there is a growing trend of hypervitaminosis D, a clinical condition characterized by elevated serum vitamin D3 levels, note the authors, adding that women, children and surgical patients are most likely to be affected.

This case report further highlights the potential toxicity of supplements that are largely considered safe until taken in unsafe amounts or in unsafe combinations, they conclude.

Correction: This article has been amended to update 50,000 mg to 150,000 IU (3750 micrograms) and 600 mg (400IU) to 400 IU, or 10 micrograms.
