8 Best Breakfasts for Rapid Weight Loss Eat This Not That

Posted: September 2, 2022 at 2:10 am

For most people, breakfast is the easiest meal to make for losing weight. For one, you are at home, not at work, or being tempted by fast food when you're out and about later in the day. The morning gives you the best control over what you eat. The ingredients for a morning meal can be very simple. You probably already have them in the pantry and refrigerator.

Secondly, eating a satisfying meal that keeps you from snacking or scarfing down a huge lunch has been shown to reduce overall calorie intake for the rest of the day.

"That may be due to the fact that people who skip breakfast tend to have less energy throughout the day or they feel hungrier and end up eating more calories later in the day," says registered dietitian Reda Elmardi, RD, CSCS, a certified strength and conditioning specialist trainer and owner of The Gym Goat. "However, there is no definite answer as to whether eating a certain type of food for breakfast can help you lose weight. You need to find something that works for you and stick with it."

If there's any way to lose weight rapidly, a good place to start is breakfast. We asked nutrition, fitness, and weight loss experts for their opinion and suggestions for their favorite healthy breakfasts that can help you lose weight. Then, for more healthy tips, check out these Sneaky Weight Loss Tricks That Actually Work, Says Science.

No matter what you choose to eat for breakfast, registered dietitian Gaby Vaca-Flores, RD, founder of GlowAndGreens.com, suggests it contains each of the three macronutrients: protein, fat, and carbohydrate. Why? For the reasons mentioned above.

"Balanced meals with all three macros can promote weight loss by keeping you full longer and helping you consume fewer calories throughout the day," says Vaca-Flores. Her favorite macro-rich breakfast is eggs and avocado on 100% whole wheat toast.

There is also research suggesting that eating two eggs for breakfast can boost weight loss when combined with a calorie deficit.

"This is likely related to the high protein content of eggs which can exert a positive effect on your metabolism and hunger hormones," she says. "My favorite way to add flavor to eggs with avocado toast is with everything but the bagel seasoning and a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon."

A protein shake makes a good quick breakfast when time is of the essence. But only if you make it with the right stuff. Too often, people blend up smoothies loaded with calories and added sugars. Even the powdered protein you choose to use can make a difference in improving satiety for weight loss, say medical board experts Lyssie Lakatos, RDN, CDN, CFT, and Tammy Lakatos Shames, RDN, CDN, CFT, also known as The Nutrition Twins and authors of The Nutrition Twins' Veggie Cure. They recommend using pea protein powder for smoothies, noting that a study published in Nutrition Journal found that pea protein was more effective at staving off hunger than whey protein; improved satiety can potentially lead to weight loss.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

They often suggest their clients try this recipe for a blueberry smoothie made with pea protein powder. To make it, you'll need:

Blend all ingredients together until smooth, adding water as needed to reach desired thickness.

When you are breaking your overnight fast, make your meal fast. You're more likely to eat breakfast if you make it simple and quick. Elmardi suggests hard boiling half dozen eggs to keep in the fridge for a quick breakfast or snack.

"Oatmeal with berries is another great way to start off your day because it's full of fiber, which keeps you feeling fuller longer, and it has plenty of protein and iron," she says. "A great breakfast option before a workout is protein- and calcium-rich plain Greek yogurt. Add fresh fruit if you want something sweet."

Protein and fiber are a winning combination for keeping hunger at bay. Here are three super fast low-calorie breakfasts that pair a protein item with high-fiber food.

This high-protein snack or breakfast comes from medical board member Ilana Muhlstein, MS, RDN, in her book You Can Drop It: How I Dropped 100 Pounds Enjoying Carbs, Cocktails & ChocolateAnd You Can Too!.

To make Peanut Butter & Jelly Wonder Whip, you'll need:

To make it, combine the yogurt, peanut butter powder, vanilla extract, stevia (if desired), and cinnamon (if desired) in a serving bowl; mix well. Top the yogurt mixture with grapes. Serve immediately, or store refrigerated in an airtight container for up to one day.

One of the critical steps to losing weight is gaining control over mindless eating. That's why personal trainer Karisa Karmali, a National Association of Sports Medicine Certified Nutrition Coach and founder of Self-Live and Fitness, recommends high fiber and high-protein smoothies. "Protein increases satiety, which lowers the chances of binge-eating due to not being satisfied with our meals," she says.

Try her favorite recipe, a high fiber green summer smoothie:

Blend with or without ice cubes.

If you tire of oatmeal, try a nutty-flavored grain that's not normally thought of for breakfast but makes a delicious protein- and fiber-rich morning meal. Here's a popular diabetes-fighting recipe from our book The 14-Day No Sugar Diet.

To make breakfast quinoa, you'll need:

To make it, combine almond milk, water, and quinoa in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to between low and medium. Cover and simmer until most of the liquid is absorbed, 12 to 14 minutes. Stir in the butter. Remove from the heat and let stand for about 5 minutes. Add the blueberries, strawberries, walnuts, and cinnamon and mix well. Drizzle with the honey if desired.

You can make blueberry waffles into a hearty breakfast that will stick with you all morning long by using high-fiber psyllium husk, says medical board member Lisa Moskovitz, RD, CEO of NY Nutrition Group, says in her book The Core 3 Healthy Eating Plan. Derived from the Plantago ovata plant's seeds, it has prebiotic potential, meaning psyllium can feed healthy gut bacteria, increasing probiotics and promoting a healthier digestive system.

"Psyllium can also increase the production of short-chain fatty acids, which studies show may increase your metabolism and fat-burning," says Moskovitz.

To make these blueberry waffles, you'll need:

To make it, place berries in a microwave-safe dish and microwave for 1 minute. Coat the bottom and top the waffle iron with coconut oil so it's evenly distributed. Crack an egg into a small mixing blow and add cottage cheese, vanilla extract, psyllium husk, protein powder, and baking powder. Mix well. Pour batter over the waffle iron and lower the lid. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, until slightly golden brown. Let it cool for 1 minute, and then carefully remove it from the waffle iron. Once the waffle is on the plate, finish with a topping of your choice.

5 Healthy Brown Rice Recipes for Weight Loss Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:10 am

When it comes to the brown rice versus white rice debate, brown rice usually gets the win as the healthier grain. Brown rice is a grain full of helpful nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Not only that, but this grain can also help aid in weight loss management by keeping you more full during meals thanks to its fiber. With benefits like this, it seems like it's a good choice to start incorporating brown rice into your diet.

Although brown rice has some great benefits, continuously eating it plain sounds like a boring and tiring way to do so. Although the grain may taste good on its own, you can still mix it up into delicious and healthy recipes. Now, you'll enjoy a satisfying meal in many different ways, with the benefit of helping to lose weight. If you're not a chef in the kitchen and don't know what to make, we've got you covered. We spoke with The Nutrition Twins, Lyssie Lakatos, RDN, CDN, CFT, and Tammy Lakatos Shames, RDN, CDN, CFT, authors of The Nutrition Twins' Veggie Cure, to give you some healthy and tasty brown rice recipes for weight loss to incorporate into your weekly meals.

"If you feel like you can't lose weight eating carbs, this recipe is for you," says The Nutrition Twins.

This faux fried rice has less than half of the calories of many other fried rice dishes, coming in at only 126 calories per cup (versus the nearly 300-plus calories per cup in most fried rice dishes).

"This lightened-up carb is the perfect side to team up with your protein and veggies, or even to serve as a bed for them," says The Nutrition Twins. "It's packed with extra blood sugar-stabilizing fiber from the brown rice and veggies, (and even includes some protein). This will help prevent a quick rush of insulin that shuts down fat burning, and that makes many carb options the villain."

Furthermore, nutrient-loaded ingredients like ginger, kale, asparagus, and broccoli are packed into this recipe. Because of this, the Nutrition Twins suggest you'll get fewer calories per bite.

These ingredients "thin out" the calories and add potent antioxidants that boost immunity and fight inflammation, which, according to The Nutrition Twins, is a big deal.

"Chronic inflammation is linked to weight gain as well as more difficulty losing weight," they say.

This southern dish is good for the souland for weight loss!

This jambalaya is packed with two lean sources of filling protein: chicken breast and shrimp. It's also stuffed with fiber-rich, low-calorie vegetables like celery, peppers, tomatoes, and onions. Then you've got the satisfying whole grain brown rice, making for a jam-packed, nutrient-dense meal.

"This protein and veggie-packed Jambalaya has all the makings for a healthy, satisfying weight loss meal," says The Nutrition Twins. "To really step it up a notch, only use half or a quarter of the sausage," The Nutrition Twins suggest.

And although this particular recipe calls for white rice, The Nutrition Twins say be sure to use brown rice instead, since it's a "wholesome whole grain" with nutrients and fiber that research shows have beneficial effects on both abdominal fat and metabolic factors like insulin resistance and cholesterol. Meanwhile, fiber and many nutrients have been stripped out of the white rice.

"This healthy and delicious Chinese take-out-inspired meal has all the flavor of a restaurant meal, but unlike most Chinese take-out, it takes it easy on the waistline," says The Nutrition Twins.

This dish slashes the calories by more than half. The calories for a serving are about 300 calories, while most take-out dishes had about 600 calories or more.

Furthermore, making this recipe is super easy, meaning it can become your go-to, busy weeknight dinner.

"With the satisfying combination of protein and fiber (17 grams and 6 grams, respectively), that stabilizes blood sugar, you'll skirt energy dips and the subsequent sugar cravings and overeating," says The Nutrition Twins. "Like all cruciferous vegetables, broccoli contains sulforaphane, which research shows can help lead to weight loss, decreased food intake, and improved blood sugar levels."

Also, according to The Nutrition Twins, garlic's organic compound, diallyl disulfide, helps to fight the chronic inflammation in the body that makes it harder to lose weight and easier to gain weight.

This other fried rice recipe is great for portion control. Muffin cups portion out the fried rice. Because of this, The Nutrition Twins suggest it will automatically keep the calories low.

Moreso, according to The Nutrition Twins, the eggs in the dish are a great source of choline.

"Researchers have found that choline shuts off the genes that are responsible for visceral fat gain," says The Nutrition Twins. "Research has also found that including eggs at meals is more satisfying than carbohydrate-based meals alone and can reduce subsequent meal intake."

If you don't feel like eating them for dinner, enjoy them any time of day. And yes, that means breakfast too!

In research published in the Journal of Obesity & Metabolic Syndrome, protein-rich foods, such as salmon, have been shown to help increase satiety and reduce food intake.

"Salmon also provides omega-3 fats, which are known for helping to lower chronic inflammation that's associated with weight gain and obesity," say The Nutrition Twins.

If you want to lose just 1 pound of body fat, then you ought to reduce your daily calories by about 500 a day for a whole week. Means, give up 3,500 calories over the course of 7 days.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that it is 1 to 2 pounds per week. If you move ahead with this amount then 40 pounds is 20 weeks which is 4 to 5 months. No doubt, thats a quite long time and weight loss can take a while.

Just a few months into a new life in Britain having split with her long-term partner in Canada, left her job and home and moved here with the intention of finally taking comedy seriously as a career, only to be stuck in a houseshare in London with people she barely knew she made a secret decision. Without even telling her flatmates, she got on a plane, flew to Turkey, signed a few forms she literally couldnt read and, without telling a soul, had 80 per cent of her stomach removed.

By the time any of her family found out and saw her again she had shed 13 stone, which is, to give you some contemporary context, almost exactly the weight of Chris Evans bulked up to play Captain America.

Barrons decision, the journey to making it, and the journey it began is the subject of her new Edinburgh show, Losing Myself. And as she genially weaves a tale of what is, really, an extreme transformation, you begin to realise the extent of how the world is simply not set up for larger people.

Its hard to freely develop your own style because there just arent enough clothes available in the shops, and where there are, theyre usually at the very back where no-ones going to see you. A long-haul flight in economy is physical torture to the overweight, chairs of all kinds are a source of trepidation. Barron tells a story about arriving for a lovely dinner, and all my skinny little beautiful friends took all the chairs without arms, she says. Too embarrassed to speak up, Barron spent four hours eating and drinking in what was effectively a vicious arse-vice.

That shame is something she deals with in the show, but her attitude to it isnt remotely self-pitying. When a friend who had been at that dinner saw a preview of the show, she was horrified. Shes like, Im so sorry, I never thought and Im like, Its okay, Barron says when we meet in the Standards photo studio after her shoot.

I also never said anything. So it cant entirely be on you, because I never said it. I just took these moments of discomfort and anxiety and I held them all into myself, which made it really painful and lonely, but I was too ashamed to have those conversations with my friends.

But surely thats not on you, I say. I think it is and it isnt, she says. You want to have close relationships with people and I dont think I was being really authentic with them either. My weight was definitely me wearing my mental health on the outside. And it was just so visible to people. But I couldnt expect people to know all these things about me if I wasnt being honest with them, either.

And my friends, after I lost all this weight, were going, I didnt even know this was an issue for you. I just thought you were super confident and happy with who you are. You never let it show that you were anything other than that. And that just goes to show how isolating it can be, because its all I thought about.

And yet for the past seven years, at her heaviest (she wont divulge the weight she reached, but shows me a picture of herself on stage and she genuinely looks like a different woman), she was getting up on stage night after night to do stand up, something most people, no matter their shape or size, wouldnt dream of doing.

TODO: define component type tiktok

I wanted to do it since I was a kid, she says, but I just didnt have the guts. And I thought it was one of those things that only famous people did. I didnt know you could get famous doing comedy.

She doesnt come from a performing family, but they were loud and crazy. She and her brother and sister were largely raised by her grandmother while her parents worked, and I was definitely the one being like, Look at me, look at me. Im the baby. Thats why Im so obnoxious.

But by the time she realised comedy was something anyone could have a stab at, in her 20s, I had no self confidence; they would have eaten me alive up there. I couldnt have done it. She comes from a family of large people, but her weight gain had crept up on her. It happens gradually. You just start to get less and less comfortable in your own skin and in the world.

Ultimately it was lockdown that pushed Barron to the point of drastic action. I just finally went, Enough. And I think it maybe it was Covid, it was not being able to perform, it was being lonely being over here and away from people and distractions.

I'm very much a go go go kind of person. When I first moved here, for the whole first year, I had a full-time job and I was doing around 12 shows a week, still trying to have a social life and make friends in a new city and everything. I just would not allow myself to slow down for a minute. Because if you slow down, you'll hear your thoughts, basically. And then Covid hit, and there was nothing but thoughts.

I just thought, What am I doing with my life? I'm really miserable. And eventually, you need to take accountability for that, eventually you cannot blame your upbringing or the poor nutrition we had, or being working class. And my parents, they only knew what they knew, and they were doing their best. And you know, I haven't lived with them for almost 20 years. So is this really their problem still? Or is it mine? I just had to sort of own that and go, I am still in my 30s; I can choose to get this under control.

She didnt go into it completely recklessly. Barron understood her action was drastic and started getting regular therapy before she made the trip, to cope with the inevitable emotional rollercoaster. I was like, Alright, what are we going to talk about? My messed up relationship with my family, or my f***boys ? And she was like, No, I think the worst relationship you have in your life is with yourself. And I was like, Hey, coach, Im paying you a lot of money. Isn't this supposed to make me feel good?

The therapist was right, though. I just hated myself. Anything you thought about me, when you saw me as a bigger person, I guarantee you, I thought it, but much, much worse. And that's how I would talk to myself all the time. I try really hard not to do that now.

The surgery hasnt been a magic bullet. Part of Barrons show goes into the insanely strict diet that she had to adopt after the surgery, and the weird stuff shes not allowed to do (you cant chew gum, drink through straws or drink carbonated drinks because it creates too much air in your tiny stomach; all the precious space must be preserved for nutrition). And there are other, less obvious pitfalls. Shopping is still a nightmare, but for different reasons.

Because I was always bigger, the clothes I would gravitate towards would just be big, black, oversized baggy clothes to hide myself. So now I dont even know what my style is. Ill go to Westfield and Ill get completely overwhelmed. Where can I even start? How do you find your style after [so many] years?

Shes still getting used to her new self. Even now I will see a chair now or see a booth in a restaurant, Ill be like, Im not gonna be able to fit. Ill catch myself in the mirror sometimes and I dont even really recognise myself. But I also dont really recognise who I was before. I look at these pictures sometimes, and I go, who even was she? I dont feel like her anymore.

Barron says shes happier now than shes ever been. She has just turned 39, and on August 10 itll be seven years since I went up and did my first open mic, she says, with deserved pride.

She is a little envious, she says, of comics her age who have been on stage for decades, but then says that until shed lived a bit more she wouldnt have had anything to talk about. My [earlier] comedy was very surface. It was about like dating and sex; the easy jokes. This is the first time Ive ever opened up and have talked about vulnerable things on stage, and really had something to say.

It seems to be having an impact. Barrons been developing her latest show on stage, and after one recent gig, I had a woman who was sobbing. She came up to me afterwards and said, can I just hug you? And I had another guy last night, this really classically handsome man, great physique. And he was like, You probably don't think it's true, but I'm telling you, a lot of that shit hit home. And I was like, Wow. I don't know why, maybe he has somebody big in his life and hes never really thought about these things before, or maybe he was a bully, or maybe he had weight issues. I don't know. But it's been really interesting to get feedback from people. And I just feel like, because I'm being more real on stage, I think people can feel it, so they're giving me so much more love and appreciation now.

How often are people actually that focused, listening to you share your ideas and thoughts? I just think comedy is the most beautiful, pure art form. I love it so much.

UTSW researchers show effectiveness of migraine drug in weight loss – UT Southwestern

Posted: July 16, 2022 at 1:58 am

Chen Liu, Ph.D.

DALLAS July 11, 2022 Triptans, a commonly prescribed class of migraine drugs, may also be useful in treating obesity, a new study by scientists at UTSouthwestern suggests. In studies on obese mice, a daily dose of a triptan led animals to eat less food and lose weight over the course of a month, the team reported in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.

Weve shown that there is real potential to repurpose these drugs, which are already known to be safe, for appetite suppression and weight loss, said study leader Chen Liu, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Neuroscience and an investigator in the Peter ODonnell Jr. Brain Institute.

Obesity affects more than 41% of all adults in the U.S. and increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Most treatments for obesity focus on eating habits and physical activity.

Scientists have long known that serotonin, a chemical messenger found throughout the brain and body, plays a key role in appetite. However, there are 15 different serotonin receptors molecules that sense serotonin and signal for cells to change their behavior in response. Researchers have struggled to understand the role of each serotonin receptor in appetite, and previous drugs including fen-phen and lorcaserin (Belviq) that targeted certain individual receptors have been withdrawn from the market due to side effects.

Triptans, which are used to treat acute migraines and cluster headaches, work by targeting a different receptor the serotonin 1B receptor (Htr1b) that had not previously been well studied in the context of appetite and weight loss, said Dr. Liu.

For the new study, the researchers tested six prescription triptans in obese mice that were fed a high-fat diet for seven weeks. Mice fed two of these drugs ate about the same amount, but mice fed the other four ate less. After 24 days, mice given a daily dose of the drug frovatriptan lost, on average, 3.6% of their body weight, while mice not given a triptan gained an average of 5.1% of their body weight. Dr. Liu and his colleagues saw similar results when they implanted devices into the animals that gave them a steady dose of frovatriptan for 24 days.

We found that these drugs, and one in particular, can lower body weight and improve glucose metabolism in less than a month, which is pretty impressive, said Dr. Liu.

Since triptans are generally prescribed for short-term use during migraines, Dr. Liu suspects that patients would not have noticed the longer-term impacts on appetite and weight in the past.

To determine exactly how frovatriptan impacts food intake and weight, the researchers engineered mice to lack either Htr1b or Htr2c, the serotonin receptor targeted by fen-phen and lorcaserin. In mice without Htr1b, frovatriptan no longer could decrease appetite or cause weight loss, while cutting out Htr2c had no effect. This confirmed that the drug worked by targeting the serotonin 1B receptor.

This finding could be important for drug development, said Dr. Liu. We not only shed light on the potential to repurpose existing triptans but also brought attention to Htr1b as a candidate to treat obesity and regulate food intake.

The team went on to show exactly which neurons in the brain were most important for the role of Htr1b in mediating appetite, homing in on a small group of cells within the brains hypothalamus.

Other researchers who contributed to this study include Li Li, Steven C. Wyler, Luis A. Len-Mercado, Baijie Xu, Swati, Xiameng Chen, Rong Wan, and Amanda G. Arnold of UTSouthwestern; Youjin Oh and Jong-Woo Sohn of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology; Lin Jia of UT Dallas; Guanlin Wang of the University of Oxford; Katherine Nautiyal of Dartmouth College; and Ren Hen of Columbia University.

A new generation of weight loss drugs makes bold promises, but who really wins? – Quartz

Posted: June 26, 2022 at 1:57 am

In the months after having her second child, Sarah found herself fed up. The 40-year-old Seattle resident was cutting carbs and sugar, and exercising regularly, but couldnt seem to shed the pounds she had put on during pregnancy. So when an email newsletter mentioned a new weight-loss drug called Wegovy, Sarah decided to give it a try. Eight months later, she is out more than $10,000and down more than 60 lbs.

Wegovy made losing weight almost effortless, Sarah, whose name has been changed to protect her identity, told Quartz. Im not hungry often anymore and it doesnt take any willpower to eat less. I simply dont have any desire to overeat.

Sarah is one of 125,000 US-based patients now taking Wegovy (whose generic name is semaglutide), a member of a new class of weight-loss drugs. These drugs work differently than the appetite suppressants popular among previous generations of dieters. They are also hitting the market at a different moment: one in which people are more eager than ever for realistic, science-based methods for addressing excess weight, even as a growing faction of activists and doctors voice skepticism of weight as an accurate measure of health.

In the mid-1990s, experiments on Gila monster venom found it contained hormones that could help lower blood sugar. That led to the diabetes drug Ozempic, which ultimately went on the market in 2018. People on that drug discovered a funny side effect: They lost weight.

In 2021, that same compound was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the name Wegovy for the express purpose of weight loss. Drugs like Wegovy work in more complex ways than simply suppressing appetite, and promise fewer (though not zero) side effects.

Like Wegovy, many of these drugs were originally approved for other conditions; liraglutide (brand name Saxenda for weight loss) was also originally approved as a diabetes drug (Victoza). In fact, semaglutide and liraglutide work similarly in the body: Theyre known as GLP-1 receptor agonists because they activate receptors for the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) hormone, reducing appetite by slowing digestion and the rate at which the body takes up glucose.

Perhaps most important, the new drugs promise significant weight loss. The previous weight loss drugs were just modestly effective, says John Buse, an endocrinologist at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. The average patient would lose 5% of their body weight, in some cases up to 8%. But with semaglutide, he says, weve gotten the kind of weight loss that makes people pay attention: 10-15% of body weight. Thats the average weight losshalf of people are losing more than that. Its a gamechanger in the conversationnow that we have medicines for which a substantial proportion of patients can expect to lose 30 to 50 lbs.

In one 68-week pre-approval clinical trial, patients on Wegovy did indeed lose 14.9% of their body weight on average, compared with 2.4% for people on a placebo. (Although, as several writers and scholars have pointed out, the study was funded by Novo Nordisk, which makes Wegovy.) Given the average weight of trial participants100 kg, or 220 lbs.that meant weight loss of about 15 kg, or 33 lbs.

Other drugs in development have had similar results. In a recent trial for one called tirzepatide from Eli Lilly, more than half of patients lost at least 20% of their body weight50 lbs. in many cases.

This new class of drugs is entering a market that at first glance seems ripe for breakthrough. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 42% of Americans70 million peoplemeet the criteria for obesity (having a BMI of 30 or more). At one point or another, most of those people will try a diet and exercise regimen to lose weight.

But a growing body of research shows that diets are not an effective way to lose weight and keep it off. Obesity is a complex disease for most people, lifestyle modifications, diet, and exercise are just not enough, says Katherine Saunders, a doctor at the Comprehensive Weight Control Center at Weill Cornell Medicine and co-founder of Intellihealth, an app-based platform that brings evidence-based obesity treatment to patients.

In part because of that complexity, bariatric surgery has since 2009 been considered the standard of care for patients looking to lose a substantial amount of weight. But these procedures can be invasive and expensive, and can come with significant and long-lasting complications.

The dearth of other options leaves some patients and doctors excited about this new generation of drugs. Right now, the field is really looking for more efficacy, number one. People will do almost anything to lose weight, says Buse. We have more than just surgery now for promoting substantial weight loss. The most exciting thing is that obesity is on the ropes.

While hopes are high, the realities of taking these drugs can be more complicated for patients. There are often side effectsthe most common for semaglutide and liraglutide are diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea. On Wegovy, Sarah says shes experienced diarrhea so severe that a few times she had to delay her next dose.

Physicians can sometimes gloss over or downplay those effects. But a visit to dedicated Reddit pages for these drugs shows whole communities of patients struggling to adhere to the regimen when theyre feeling sick, and seeking support from a community to understand whether what seems like a severe reaction is normal. (Novo Nordisk did not respond to a request for comment.)

How well a patient can tolerate a drug is something we think about quite a lot, Saunders says. We always start with lower doses and increase gradually as tolerated. Everyone is different. We keep in close touch with the patient and monitor them closely.

And while these new drugs are relatively well-studied, there are still unknowns. They seem to help patients keep weight off more reliably than diet and exercise alone, but those benefits fade after people stop taking the drugs, and patients do often regain weight. There are also questions about long-term effects. In 1997, weight loss drug fenfluramine/phentermine (fen-phen) was pulled off the market after it was found to cause heart problems. More recently, Belviq (lorcaserin), which the FDA approved for weight loss in 2012, was pulled from the US market in 2020 because long-term use was found to increase the incidence of various types of cancers.

Even if a patient does want to go on one of these drugs, she might not be able to. Many patients keen to try Wegovy cant access it at the moment, due to a supply chain issue that its manufacturer doesnt expect to resolve until later this year. Even then, most US health insurers, including Medicare, do not cover drugs like Wegovy, and paying out of pocket can cost thousands of dollars per month. After Sarahs doctor told her she doesnt prescribe Wegovy, Sarah secured a prescription through an online health provider; she pays for it out of pocket.

The lack of insurance coverage is in spite of the fact that the American Medical Association declared obesity to be a disease in 2013. The conversation around insurance coverage needs to be had with insurance companies, but also with employers, says Kimberly Gudzune, the medical director for the American Board of Obesity Medicine. It needs to be seen as an investment in your workforce. The Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, which would expand Medicare to include obesity treatments, has been introduced to US Congress every year since 2012, but has never passed.

Though excess body fat was once considered a sign of wealth or fertility, over the past century a stigma has developed against larger bodies. Today doctors associate excess weight with medical conditions like heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, and depression. Studies also show that life is harder when you move through the world in a larger body. Fat people are less likely to be hired for a job, are paid less, are less likely to get married, and are less likely to be happy (though not if theyre living around other fat people). One 2006 study found that 46% of respondents would rather give up one year of life than be obese; 5% said theyd rather lose a limb.

The current state of research makes it impossible to unravel the full complexity of weight and health, but the conversation is starting to accommodate more nuance. Ubiquitous metrics such as body mass index are increasingly understood to be unreliable indicators(though doctors often still use them), and even the language around larger bodies is under review. Many physicians use obese to describe people who have excess weight or a BMI over 30, but activists are shying away from the word. The reasonwe are reluctant to use the words overweight and obesity is that they are made up, they can change, says Tigress Osborn, a fat activist and chair of the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance.

In fact, some research suggests that fat may have a protective effect on the body. The bodys weight-regulating mechanism is about survival. Its a system with more moving parts than we understand, says Marilyn Wann, a fat activist and author of the book Fat!So? Trying to remove weight from an individual or from the population is like trying to take a sledgehammer to the weatherwe dont know the unintended negative consequences were going to create.

There are signs that in the future physicians may be more accepting of bodies of different sizes. But as weight loss drugs get more effective and more available, those cultural gains for body positivity (or body neutrality, or fat acceptance) may also be called into question.

Overweight patients who come to see Shelly Crane might have an experience theyve never had before. I dont initiate a weight-loss conversation with a patient, says Crane, a family physician at Advocate Aurora Health in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Most weight-loss programs come with more risk of harm than good, she says, and theres not enough evidence that people who do lose weight are healthier in the end.

Crane doesnt regularly prescribe new drugs for weight loss, though she says more patients are coming in and asking for them lately. Instead, she prefers to keep conversations focused on goals of care. Patients say, I know I need to lose weight, and I say, Why do you think you need to lose weight? What would change in your life if your weight was lower? That gives her an opening to talk about health more broadlyhow is the patients sleep? Their diet? Their mobility? I try to stay in my sphere of what Im able to do as a family doctor and really address the root of the health issue as much as I can.

Crane was drawn to this approach by listening to her patients talk about experiencing size discrimination, and by following the work of fat activists such as Ragen Chastain and Aubrey Gordon. Though shes been trained in a more integrative style of medicine, her approach toward body acceptance was also shaped by her discovery of intuitive eating during medical school. Since then, shes been working on deprogramming herself and her colleagues from anti-fat bias.

Crane is part of a burgeoning movement among doctors to improve the treatment of larger patients. For some, that means skipping the dreaded weigh-in, a practice that is somewhat controversial within medicine. Medical organizations like the Association of American Medical Colleges also offer guidelines to reduce anti-fat bias among clinicians.

For doctors, the updated approach at least engenders trust, which can in turn get patients to seek medical care more frequently and improve their overall health. At most, it broadens the definition of what healthy means, and looks like.

Some fat activists see this shift as an important step. The thing we hear most often from the public is, I thought I had this thing, but all the doctor wanted to talk to me about is weight loss, and now the thing is worse, Osborn says. Its progress to have people in the medical establishment recognizing that there are other healthcare concerns besides weight, if weight is a healthcare concern.

The hope is that this evolution continues. Activists want more people, in the medical profession and outside of it, to respect their autonomy. That becomes even more pressing in a possible future filled with weight-loss drugsa future where a person can simply take a drug and stop being fat. The ease with which I could become smallerwhy should I? That should be up to me. Just like, if you believe its a medical disorder, the treatment I choose should be up to me, Osborn says. Like with anything else, if you believe fat is a disorder, we should let people decide whether people will get treated or not.

Fatness isnt a problem to be solved in and of itself. It is not the root cause of all ills, as much as [medicine] would like to think it is, Crane says. We can help people live full, rich lives when we focus on goals of care and not on weight.

9 Fruits You Need To Add to Your Smoothie for Weight Loss Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: June 16, 2022 at 1:58 am

Fruit blended into a protein smoothie makes a shake for weight loss taste great without having to be sweetened with nut milk containing added sugar, flavored yogurt, honey, or some other sweetener. But like any sweetener, fruit contains sugar, so if you add too many high-sugar fruits into your smoothie, you can still spike your blood glucose.

So, fruit smoothies can be a slippery slope for people hoping to lose weight. That's why many of our medical review board dietitians offer caveats when their clients look to smoothies to help them slim down. Protein smoothies are best used as meal replacements, rather than snacks, since your ultimate goal is achieving a calorie deficit by the end of the day. But as substitutes for meals, smoothies should contain fewer calories than the meals they replace.

Julie Upton, MS, RD, co-founder of Appetite for Health Consulting, is one of the registered dietitians on our board who shuns smoothies for weight loss. "Eat your calories, rather than drink them," she advises. Drinks can be loaded with calories that you don't realize are there as you'll learn by reading 40 Drinks You Should Never Drink After 40.

Registered dietitian nutritionists Tammy Lakatos Shames, RDN, CDN, and Lyssie Lakatos, RDN, CDN, known as The Nutrition Twins, agree that whole fruits trump those blended into smoothies. They warn that overloading a smoothie with too much fruit could turn your health drink into a calorie bomb. "Drinking your calories isn't as satisfying as when you eat the real food, and you end up eating more calories later in the day," they say.

As long as you are careful about the ingredients that go into your smoothie, and about the size of the portion you consume, fruit-based smoothies still can be part of an effective weight-loss strategy. The key is keeping track of the number of calories your ingredients contribute. To that end, it's helpful to shun high-calorie bananas and avocados and favor low-calorie, low-sugar fruits with a high-water content to provide sweetness without the heavy calorie load. Here are the fruits you should be adding to your smoothies, and for more on how to eat healthy, don't miss The #1 Best Juice to Drink Every Day, Says Science.

An apple is an ideal take-along snack. For one, it won't crush in your backpack the way grapes and berries can. And if you eat the skin, it is rich in fiber, which makes an apple a "low-GI" food. "GI" stands for glycemic index, a scale from 0 to 100 that shows how much a food will raise blood sugar within two hours of eating it. At a GI of 36, apples are pretty low. Eating an apple whole is the best way to reap its weight-loss benefits. But blending apple chunks in a smoothie isn't a bad second choice. A red delicious apple contains about 62 calories and 12 grams of natural sugar.

Blueberries contain more antioxidants than any other popular smoothie fruit. One called pterostilbene, which is similar to the resveratrol in grapes, has been shown to stimulate liver cells to help break down fat and cholesterol, according to USDA scientists. One cup of blueberries contains just 64 calories and 9.3 grams of sugars and a bushel full of nutrients, including fiber. You can't go wrong popping a handful in your daily smoothie or munching on them as a snack. The anthocyanins that give blueberries their deep blue color are powerful phytochemicals associated with better weight maintenance and reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease, according to Advances in Nutrition.

Ripe, juicy cantaloupe is nearly 90% water and rich in dietary fiber, which makes it an ideal fruit for your weight-loss-promoting smoothie as long as you don't load up your shake with high-calorie add-ins, including nut butters. One cup of cantaloupe contains 12.6 grams of sugars and 60 calories, which isn't much for all of the nutrients, including beta-carotene, folate, vitamin C, and potassium you're getting.

If you haven't tried cherries in your smoothie, you're missing out; they're delicious. Just don't forget to pit them, first. Tart cherries in particular are a terrific weight-loss fruit because not only are they low in calories and sugar (a half-cup contains just 48 calories and 10 grams of sugar), but they are rich in antioxidant compounds called anthocyanins that combat the free radicals that contribute to various chronic inflammatory diseases related to obesity. A review of the health benefits of cherries in the journal Nutrients found that consumption of cherries reduced exercise-induced muscle soreness and loss of strength, blood pressure, and arthritis, improved sleep, and lowered very-low-density lipoprotein, the worst type of bad cholesterol, and triglycerides.

It's not the most popular smoothie fruit, but it's worth trying. Kiwi is a good source of fiber, delivering at least 3 grams of dietary fiber per serving, which can help lower the impact of the fruit's sugar on blood sugar. But don't peel the fruit; most of the fiber is found in the brown skin. Cut it into chunks and blend it well in a blender. Small studies suggest that regular consumption of kiwifruit can reduce body fat mass and lower blood pressure. A serving of kiwi contains 64 calories and 9 grams of sugars.

A 12-week study involving 91 obese patients demonstrated the potential for eating fresh grapefruit as a potent weight loss strategy. The research in the Journal of Medicinal Food showed that people who ate half of a fresh grapefruit before meals lost an average of 3.5 pounds in 12 weeks. The subjects' insulin response improved as well, the study found. So, if weight loss is your goal, you might try keeping halves of grapefruit at the ready at mealtimes. Another option: make a grapefruit-based smoothie for a meal replacement. A half-cup of grapefruit sections with juice contains just 37 calories and 8.5 grams of sugars.

Nature's candy is loaded with vitamin C for immune-system strength, and it's high in water content and fiber, making it a great fruit for weight maintenance. Strawberries have 49 calories, 7 grams of sugars and about 3 grams of fiber per 1 cup serving. Raspberries are even lower in sugar at just 2.6 grams per 57-calorie, -cup serving. They don't last long in the fridge so keep your freezer stocked with a bag. Frozen berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries) are just as nutritious as fresh ones.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

Watermelon is an example of a fruit that has a high glycemic index but is actually fine for people who are overweight or have high blood sugar because it is high in water content and fiber and low in carbohydrates. A 2019 study in the journal Nutrients compared overweight people who ate daily snacks of watermelon or low-fat cookies for four weeks. The researchers found that the watermelon made the subjects less hungry after eating and by the end of the trial decreased body weight, body mass index, blood pressure, and waist-to-hip ratio. A cup of watermelon delivers just 45 calories and about 9 grams of sugars. Check out these 8 Best Smoothie Recipes for Managing Blood Sugar.

25 Weight Loss Smoothies to Help You Lose Fat – Eat This Not That

Posted: May 20, 2022 at 1:49 am

If you had the power to make your life better in just 30 seconds, would you use it? Well, that power is yours. With the simple push of a button, you can blend up weight loss smoothies that turn your body into a hyper-efficient fat-burning machine. Weight loss smoothies rev up your metabolism, tone and define your muscles, and turn off the genes that contribute to fat storage and a myriad chronic health issues.

All you need is a blender and the perfect weight loss smoothie.

Healthy smoothies for weight loss are made with the right blend of weight loss foods that are scientifically proven to decrease body fat. Some of the common ingredients we include in these smoothies for weight loss are:

When you replace your standard breakfast with a weight loss smoothie, you can lose weight.

On the Zero Belly Smoothies diet, a 39-year-old emergency-response adviser from Katy, Texas, Fred drank Zero Belly Smoothies as part of his weight-loss program. "I noticed results in the first week," he says. "It really was amazing." Fred lost 21 pounds and 5 inches off his waist over the next six weeks.

Ohio's Martha Chesler, 52, who lost 21 pounds and 7 inches off her waist in less than 40 days, had the same experience. "I saw results immediately," she says.

In fact, in our original Zero Belly Test Panel of more than 500 men and women, many lost up to 16 pounds in the first 14 days. Now you can achieve results like these even more quickly with this carefully created, highly effective collection of Zero Belly Smoothies.

Here's just a selection of the amazing weight-loss smoothies you'll find in the book Zero Belly Smoothies!

For this selection, I asked the country's top nutritionists to share with me their favorite weight loss smoothies, keeping the best weight loss foods in mind, and the results are all delicious and nutritious. Pay attention to the protein countsif it's under 25 grams, you don't want them as a meal replacement, but rather paired with a meal.

All recipes serve one unless otherwise indicated.

by Isabel Smith, MS, RD, CDN

"I really love this weight loss smoothie because it tastes super-decadent, but in reality is just loaded with a ton of natural, unprocessed, and healthful ingredients. The cocoa powder is a good source of flavonoids that are both brain and heart-healthy, and also makes the smoothie taste like I've added a ton of chocolate. In addition to the healthy cocoa, this smoothie also has other healthy ingredients like raspberries that are a source of immune-boosting vitamin C, and the spinach that's a source of energizing B vitamins. If I have this smoothie post-workout, I'll also add a plant-based protein like sprouted rice or pea protein to help my muscles recover more quickly."

"Combining a non-dairy, low-calorie smoothie first thing in the morning with a roughly even portion of high-quality protein and good carbs is a great start to anyone looking to lose weight and be healthy. Starting the day off with a smoothie such as this will pull your body out of it's overnight fasting state, and the carbohydrates from healthy, mixed berries combined with high-quality protein will give you the quick energy and protein uptake your body needs first thing in the morning without being 'too much."

NUTRITION: 230 calories / 2.5 g fat / 20 g carbs / 5 g fiber / 7 g sugar / 26 g protein

by Cassie Bjork, RD, LD of Redefined Weight Loss

"This is my go-to smoothie recipe for weight loss because it contains a balance of protein, fat, and carbs which promote stable blood sugar levels, and in turn, your pancreas can secrete your fat-burning hormone, glucagon! And it's so good, you can drink one every morning and not get sick of it."

NUTRITION: 315 calories / 21 g fat / 26 g carbs / 4 g fiber / 9 g sugar / 14 g protein

by Lyssie Lakatos, RDN, CDN, CFT and Tammy Lakatos Shames, RD, CDN, CFT, The Nutrition Twins

With such a low protein count, this smoothie wouldn't qualify as a meal replacement, but it does pair well with an omelet, as the nutritionists suggest. Serves 3.

NUTRITION: 58 calories / 0 g fat / 14 g carbs / 3 g fiber / 5 g sugar / 2 g protein

by Jennifer Cassetta, MS, CN, clinical nutritionist, personal trainer

"Pumpkin pie without the pie, all year round? Yes, please! Pumpkin is a good clean burning carbohydrate and when you add the protein powder you'll balance your blood sugar as well as add the perfect components for a post-workout recovery meal."

NUTRITION: 331 calories / 10 g fat / 42 g carbs / 11 g fiber / 17 g sugar / 24 g protein

Fruits are like people: They come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, colors, and styles, and each has its own temperament. Some are so sweet you can barely stand it, others so bitter you avoid them at all costs. But regardless of their individual qualities, all fruits have something to offer and deserve our utmost respect.

That said, my favorites are red fruits. While there are studies linking nearly every kind of fruit to some sort of health benefit, the most evidence tends to pile up around fruits that are red or reddish, like purple or orange fruits. For example, a study in the journal Nutrition & Metabolism found that eating half a red grapefruit before a meal may help reduce visceral fat and lower cholesterol levels. Another study found that tart cherries reduce belly fat; blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries have also been linked to lower abdominal fat accumulation.

So while a number of different fruits will show up in Zero Belly Smoothies, expect many of your smoothies from this chapter to have a cool red or purple hue. That's a sign that you're getting a massive hit of antioxidants and fat-fighting fiber.

All recipes make one serving.

Pink Lady apples are among the most nutrient-rich varieties, according to a study at the University of Western Australia. This smoothie combines the apple with vanilla and cinnamon flavors to give you a uniquely autumnal fruit drink.

NUTRITION: 273 calories / 7.4 g fat / 27 g carbs / 5.5 g fiber / 15 g sugar / 26 g protein

Like a light, summery bowl of oatsthis is comfort food in a glass. Unless it's August and the peaches in your neck of the woods are perfect, opt for frozen peaches instead. The vanilla in the protein powder will combine with the peaches for a bright, warm, and hearty drink.

NUTRITION: 277 calories / 4 g fat / 33 g carbs / 6 g fiber / 14 g sugar / 28 g protein

Ginger packs high levels of health-boosting phytonutrients. But use fresh ginger: Chances are you bought that powdered ginger in your cabinet three years ago when you made a pumpkin pie, and it's been losing potency ever since. To keep fresh ginger on hand, break it into small chunks and freeze it, then allow to defrost before grating.

NUTRITION: 264 calories / 5 g fat / 26 g carbs / 6 g fiber / 11 g sugar / 29 g protein

Those Hulk-colored nuts have their own special fat-burning powers. In a recent Nutrition study, two groups followed nearly identical diet and exercise regimens; however, one of the groups was fed unsalted pistachios, while the other group was not. Surprisingly enough, the pistachio group members lost more belly chub and showed better improvements in their blood glucose and cholesterol levels than the control group participants.

NUTRITION: 266 calories / 9 g fat / 18 g carbs / 5 g fiber / 8 g sugar / 30 g protein

Valentine's Day in a glass. Don't underestimate the healing powers of dark chocolateit's not there as a gimmick. When you combine fruit and dark chocolate (at least 70 percent cacao), you accelerate the release of butyrate, a compound made in your large intestine that tells your fat-storage genes to chill out.

NUTRITION: 280 calories / 3 g fat / 35 g carbs / 6 g fiber / 17 g sugar / 28 g protein

As fruits go, bananas and peaches are polar opposites: bananas provide fiber and a rich consistency, while peaches add antioxidants for very few calories.

NUTRITION: 287 calories / 3 g fat / 36 g carbs / 5 g fiber / 22 g sugar / 29 g protein

Popping into a juice bar for a cold cup of extruded kale juice may be all the rage, but when it comes to both nutritional impact and weight-loss power, juices can't hold a candle to smoothies.

Next time you want to drink your veggies, blend up one of these seriously nutritious recipes from the book Zero Belly Smoothies.

All recipes make one serving.

Putting lemon in your blender is like taking out a nutrition insurance policy for your smoothie. That's because a significant percentage of the antioxidant polyphenols in any food or drink break down before they reach your bloodstream. But researchers at Purdue University discovered that adding lemon juice to the equation helped preserve the polyphenols.

NUTRITION: 254 calories / 7 g fat / 20 g carbs / 5 g fiber / 10 g sugar / 30 g protein

This is the world's most overlooked superfood: Studies show that parsley is actually denser with nutrients than kale, dandelion greens, or romaine lettuce. Combine it with superheroes like watercress and chia and you've got a mighty fat-fighting drink.

NUTRITION: 214 calories / 2 g fat / 22 g carbs / 4 g fiber / 10 g sugar / 28.5 g protein

We think of romaine lettuce as the crispy stuff at the bottom of a Caesar salad, but it's one of the 10 most nutritious vegetables around, and higher in fiber than almost any other form of lettuce. And because it's mostly water, it makes this smoothie a real thirst-quencher.

NUTRITION: 280 calories / 5.8 g fat / 27 g carbs / 10 g fiber / 12 g sugar / 201 g protein

Combining hemp and chia seeds gives you a superdose of omega-3 fatty acids. And hemp seeds, by weight, provide more protein than even beef or fish.

NUTRITION: 270 calories / 6 g fat / 26 g carbs / 6 g fiber / 10 g sugar / 29 g protein

I can't recommend green tea enough as a smoothie enhancer. In fact, people who drink green tea regularly have nearly 20 percent less body fat than those who don't, according to one 10-year Taiwanese study. And EGCG, the unique ingredient in green tea, can deactivate the genetic triggers for diabetes and obesity.

NUTRITION: 245 calories / 6 g fat / 23 g carbs / 5 g fiber / 11 g sugar / 26 g protein

Have you ever heard of the "health halo"? It's a term nutrition experts use to describe foods that use a healthy-sounding word like natural on their labels, or add ingredients that people think of as good for you ("Now with chia!"), but which are really junk at heart.

These smoothies are the reverse of that theory. These drinks are tremendously nutritiouspacked with as much, or more, fiber, protein, and healthy fats as any other drinks in the whole book. But they seem like they're bad for you. How can drinks that seem like they came right from the ice cream shop flatten your belly so effectively?

These are the drinks you'll whip up on a night when you want something to satisfy your ice cream jones. They're the recipes you'll lean on when your kids are complaining that they want something sweet for dessert. And they're the drinks you'll use to reward yourself after a hard day at work or in the gym. Deep, comforting, and delicious, these filling smoothies taste more like dessert than what they really arepowerful weight-loss weapons, compliments of the new book, Zero Belly Smoothies.

All recipes make one serving.

If you want your weight loss smoothies to taste like dessert, this recipe should be your go-to. Four words that combine to sound like a jam session at Ben & Jerry's house. The density of the banana will have you convinced you're drinking a milkshake, while the omega-3s in the walnuts will keep your mind sharp and your belly lean.

NUTRITION: 229 calories / 11 g fat / 26 g carbs / 7 g fiber / 10 g sugar / 28 g protein"

Confession: This recipe is adapted from one of our favorites from Zero Belly Cookbook. We loved it so much we had to include it here as well. For 150-plus recipes that melt belly fat firstfeaturing foods you lovecheck out the cookbook today.

NUTRITION: 300 calories / 9 g fat / 34 g carb / 11 g fiber / 9 g sugar / 25 g protein

Beans? In a smoothie? Use canned or pre-cooked beans for a thick, earthy protein and fiber punch. One study found that people who ate cup of beans daily weighed 6.6 pounds less, on average, than those who didn't, even though the bean eaters took in more calories.

NUTRITION: 280 calories / 3 g fat / 31 g carbs / 7 g fiber / 9 g sugar / 31 g protein"

One of my favorite almond butters is Justin's. It's made with dry-roasted almonds and a bit of sustainably-sourced palm fruit oil, which lends the spread its creamy texture. (They also make all-natural peanut butter cups that will make you question everything you thought you knew about the PB-chocolate combo.)

NUTRITION: 340 calorie/ 15 g fat / 36 g carbs / 10 g fiber / 13 g sugar / 20 g protein

A smoothie can be a lot of things: a pre- or post-workout boost, a cold and refreshing thirst quencher, a thick and creamy dessert, a perfectly balanced breakfast. But one thing most of us never think of when we think of smoothies: comfort food.

These recipes, from the book Zero Belly Smoothies, stake out a new territory in the smoothie landscape, a culinary point of departure into a taste realm you might not have considered. While these smoothies are still cold and refreshing, they're going to taste more like a savory soup than a bright pick-me-up.

This one has a kick to it, softened by the cherry aftertaste.

NUTRITION: 232 calories / 2 g fat / 28 g carbs / 3.5 g fiber / 10 g sugar / 26 g protein

Bananas and sweet potatoes both add starch, but that's why the cinnamon is in there. Adding cinnamon to a starchy meal helps stabilize blood sugar and ward off insulin spikes, according to a series of studies printed in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

NUTRITION: 280 calories / 5 g fat / 34 g carbs / 6 g fiber / 14 g sugar / 28 g protein

You won't even taste the secret ingredient here.

NUTRITION: 340 calories / 4.5 g fat / 53 g carbs / 11 g fiber / 14 g sugar / 24 g protein

The nutty, roasted flavor of nutmeg steps in brilliantly here as a base for a delicious smoothie that will have you reminiscing about the Thanksgivings of your childhood.

NUTRITION: 283 calories / 5 g fat / 35 g carbs / 7 g fiber / 14 g sugar / 28 g protein

Unlike the pumpkin spice lattes you love, this drink has actual pumpkin in it. One-third cup of pumpkin provides protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and 16% of your recommended daily intake of vitamin C a nutrient researchers say is directly related to the body's ability to burn through fat. In fact, one study by researchers from Arizona State University showed deficiencies of vitamin C were strongly correlated with increased body fat and waist measurements.

NUTRITION: 292 calories / 5 g fat / 33 g carbs / 7 g fiber / 14 g sugar / 29 g protein

The first step to losing weight is rethinking your diet.

Weight loss comes down to energy balancemeaning you have to consistently burn more calories than you eat. High-protein foods help out with both sides of the energy balance equation, says Kim Yawitz, a registered dietitian and gym owner in St. Louis, MO.

First, high-protein foods can help boost your metabolism, both short- and long-term, Yawitz says, adding that eating a protein-heavy meal temporarily increases calorie burn, simply because your body has to work harder to digest and metabolize protein compared to fats and carbs. Over time, incorporating more high-protein foods can also help protect against muscle loss while in a calorie deficit, allowing you to eat more calories while still losing weight.

As a bonus, high-protein foods are also highly satiating, says Yawitz, especially when pitted against high-carb foods (bread, pasta, rice, etc.). In this way, eating more protein at meals and snacks can help you to eat fewer calories overall when youre trying to lose weight.

To preserve muscle mass, Yawitz typically recommends starting with 0.8-1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day on a weight loss diet. For instance, if you weigh 150 pounds, that amounts to 120 grams to 150 grams per day. Keep in mind that eating too many calories overall will make you gain weight, even if those calories come from high-quality proteins, says Yawitz. You may need to reduce your carb and fat intake, especially if youre eating a lot more protein than normal.

Another thing thats important to keep in mind as you increase your protein intake is to drink more water. In one small study, athletes on high-protein diets were more likely to be dehydrated than those who ate less protein. In this study, the athletes didnt feel especially thirsty even when their urine showed markers of dehydration, she says, noting that drinking water throughout the day can help you feel and function your best even if you dont feel parched, plus it may even help with your weight loss efforts.

Ahead, 16 such high-protein foods that can help with weight loss.

I stock my freezer with tilapia, which provides 30 grams of protein per four-ounce serving, and is also low in calories, says Yawitz. Whether you opt for tuna, tilapia, sardines, anchovies, or something else, fish is very filling, making it a great choice when youre cutting calories, says Yawitz.

This is one of my favorite proteins because it not only boasts 19 grams of high-quality protein per 3 ounces cooked, it also boasts EPA and DHA omega-3s, says Amy Gorin, R.D.N., an inclusive plant-based dietitian in Stamford, CT. These healthy fats help keep you fuller for longer (in addition to helping with heart health), she says.

"I love to make my own salmon bacon, says Gorin. Check out Gorins recipe for homemade salmon bacon here.

Heres another fish worth singling out when it comes to being high in protein and a good option for those trying to lose weight. Mackerel is low in mercury and packs a ton of protein; it has 33 grams per filet, says Kylie Ivanir M.S., R.D. Protein increases cholecystokinin (CKK), a hormone related to satiation, she says.

These are one of Gorins favorite plant-based foods to load up on because they are a complete protein, meaning they contain all nine essential amino acids that your body is unable to make on its own. She also likes that pistachios are one of the highest protein nuts, with a quarter-cup serving providing six grams of protein, adding that since pistachios contain a trifecta of protein, fiber, and better-for-you fats, they help keep you fuller for longer which can help with weight management.

Just cup of low-fat cottage cheese contains 14 grams of belly-filling protein, says Yawitz. You can stick to a cup if you need a small snack, or top a double portion with fruits or raw veggies for an easy meal.

Theres good reason egg whites have a good reputation as a protein-rich food that helps with weight management. By opting to eat egg whites rather than both the white and the yolk you cut down on a significant amount of calories without losing much protein, says Trista K. Best, M.P.H., R.D., at Balance One Supplements.

The calories in eggs goes from around 70 to less than 20 when you cut out the yolk and only lose two grams of protein. This continues to be a protein-rich food that can aid in weight loss by both keeping you full and cutting down on calories," says Best.

Almond butter, in particular, packs a significant amount of nutrients including monounsaturated fat, vitamin E, fiber and protein. A quality almond butter will have less than two grams of sugar, Best says. Protein is also a valuable nutrient when choosing an almond butter. An adequate amount of protein in a serving of almond butter is around six-to-seven grams.

Its not always easy to follow a high-protein diet, especially if youre always on the go. I keep whey protein powder and a shaker bottle on hand for days when I struggle to hit my protein goals, says Yawitz. Look for a brand thats third-party tested, and that has at least 25 grams of protein per scoop and not a lot of added ingredients. Need a good recommendation? These are the best whey protein powders to buy right now.

Mackenzie Burgess, registered dietitian nutritionist and recipe developer at Cheerful Choices, recommends choosing grass-fed beef thanks to its higher amounts of nutrients like omega-3s and antioxidants. Plus, it packs in substantial protein, which helps us feel fuller longer and may help reduce the overall calorie intake for the day," Burgess says.

Yes, tofu is the new king of protein. Tofu is a favorite plant protein because its so versatile. It picks up the flavor of whatever its cooked with, and baked tofu is so delicious, says Gorin. Plus, tofu is a complete vegan protein that provides protein and fibera combination that helps to keep you fuller for longer. Half a cup of firm tofu provides 22 grams of protein.

Soy foods in general are another group of grub to keep in mind if youre trying to load up on protein and drop weight. Soy is a high protein food that is beneficial for a weight loss diet because it also contains fiber, says Banna. Fiber is important to help you stay full and avoid overeating. Along with tofu, try edamame, miso, and tempeh (more on tempeh below).

As Burgess puts it, don't knock it till you try it. At 31 grams of protein per cup, tempeh has a firm texture and surprisingly nutty taste. Its made from fermented soy beans, making it a versatile, protein-packed choice for a meatless meal, she says. Try sauting tempeh cubes in a veggie stir-fry or grilling as kabobs, Burgess suggests.

Pea protein powder contains the magical combination for weight loss of both protein and fiber which keep you satisfied, while maintaining energy levels and keeping blood sugar levels stable, say Lyssie Lakatos, R.D.N. and Tammy Lakatos Shames, R.D.N., The Nutrition Twins.

No more energy crashes and blood sugar dips that result in sugar and salt cravings and unwanted calories from unplanned snacks. Plus, pea protein can aid in weight loss even when calories arent restricted, and it also has been found to be more effective than whey protein at fighting against hunger. Check out our guide to pea protein powders here.

Black lentils pack in 18 grams of protein per cup and the protein aids in weight loss, says Ivanir. The fiber in black lentils also slows digestion, keeping us full and reducing cravings throughout the day.

The fiber in beans will keep consumers satisfied long after a meal which can prevent overeating, says Best. If you can, pair beans with rice: Beans are also rich in protein and eating them along with rice is the best way to get in all nine essential amino acids. Taking in all essential amino acids is necessary for a healthy life and combining rice and beans provides the right combination of amino acids to achieve this.

Pumpkin seeds are high in protein, containing 12 grams per cup, says Ivanir. The protein content will keep blood sugar levels in check, aiding in weight loss, she continues, elaborating that the seeds are rich in fiber, which feeds beneficial microbes in the gut.

New to this probiotic beverage? Its time to add it to your routine regularly. Just one glass of kefir contains nine grams of protein! Protein decreases neuropeptide Y (NPY), the Im craving carbs hormone. Carbs derail weight loss efforts by spiking blood sugar, says Ivanir. Look for brands that have no added sugar, she says.
