Katherine Heigl Reveals the "Sheer Panic" She Experienced During Her Postpartum Weight-Loss Journey – E! Online

Like so many moms know, losing the baby weight doesn't just happen overnight.

In fact, the weight-loss journey can include highs and lows for months and months.While Katherine Heigl may be a Hollywood star, the proud parent is opening up about her postpartum journey.

Spoiler alert: It wasn't easy for her either.

"In the seven months since Joshua Jr was born I have managed to slowly but surely drop my pregnancy weight with only 10 pounds left to lose. I gained almost 50 pounds during my pregnancy and I'm not gonna lie, I had moments of sheer panic that I'd never be able to lose it all," Katherine wrote on her Heavenly Days blog. "I had hoped to only gain 25-30 pounds like my mother during her pregnancies but found that just wasn't possible for me."

She continued, "Despite starting my gestation out on a pregnancy friendly meal plan and hiking my butt off 5 days a week my weight kept creeping up. At a certain point, probably around 4 months I gave up the struggle and tried instead to respect my body's needs and trust my instincts. About ten days after Joshua Jr's birth I got back on the scale to see where I was at and how far I had to go."

One month after giving birth to her third child with Josh Kelley, Katherine said that she dropped about 30 pounds. The rest of the weight, however, "has not disappeared quite so magically."

"I have only lost 10 pounds since that first initial drop but that's ok because I decided from the start that I was going to lovingly but patiently reclaim my pre baby body, and forgive the glorious imperfections that would forever grace my new post baby body," the actress wrote. "This attitude of forgiveness and gentleness is the spirit with which I have embarked on my weight loss journey and it's made all the difference in the world."

Katherine says EatingWell has become one of her favorite go-to healthy meal planning sites. She has also been trying out Hello Fresh, which is a food delivery service that provides healthy meals that one can cook in about 30-45 minutes.

While every woman's journey is different, Katherine has some valuable advice that anyone may find useful as they embrace their body.

"My best weight loss advice is to start every morning by saying out loud a positive mantra of your choice about your body. Mine is 'I am easily, with good health, inspiration, grace and gratitude losing weight faster than I can even imagine with harm to none.' Then I say my gratefuls. Thanking my body for its perfect health, strength, limberness, vibrancy, youthfulness and beauty," she explained. "Whether I always believe these things about myself and my body or not, I say them. By saying them out loud with love and gratitude I have found that I not only start to believe them, but my body exhibits what I say and believe."

Losing weight following a pregnancy can feel like a game of "who can snap back fastest?"This leads many women to rely on overly strict diets and workout routines to lose the weight as fast as possible. The pressure can be especially strong if you're a celeb with an "on-screen weight"to maintain in order to get back to work. Well, Katherine Heigl, who recently gave birth to her third child, is taking a different path to shed the baby weight, she shares in a post on her blog, titled"Baggage, My Postpartum Weight Loss Journey."

Heigl's story is familiar: She was frustrated at how much weight she gained during her pregnancy compared to other women. (This writer felt the same.) Like many women, Heigl lost much of the weight automatically (she lost about 30 pounds within 10 days of giving birth, she shares). But she found the remaining 20 pounds she gained during her pregnancy much more stubborn.

Heigl explains that in order to tackle the remaining weight,she had to completely change her mindset to one of moderation and balance. "The years of deprivation, counting every single calorie, completely eliminating major food groups and setting unreasonable weight goals are over," she wrote.

"None of those things ever really worked for me and only fostered an unhealthy, resentful relationship with my body, an attitude that I do not want to pass on to my daughters."

Throughout the post, Heigl describes the steps she's taking to lose the weight gradually, without being hard on herself. Step one: Planning out low-calorie meals, without being overly restrictive. She shares that she uses EatingWell to help her plan wholesome, nutritious meals and to help her determine her daily calorie intake, especially while breastfeeding. Her current go-to: overnight oats and smoothies for breakfast and simple soups for lunch. (Here, more overnight oats recipes that will change your mornings forever.) She's also been saving time on meal planning and grocery shopping time by relying on food delivery service HelloFresh to make quick and easy low-cal dinners.

In terms of her fitness regimen, Heiglshares that she's been devoting "no less than threedays a week to exercise that suits my body type, like yoga and long hikes." ("I'm not into those high-impact cardio or weight training classes," she writes.) The other crucial component for her weight-loss success? Prioritizing sleep. Heigl shares that even with a 6-month-old, she's been managing to get in an impressive eight hours a night.

Overall though, Heigl's best weight-loss advice for fellow new moms is to start the day with positive mantras about your body and to cultivate gratitude, which can make weight loss less of a painstaking process, she says. (Try this mantra.) "The difference I've found in doing the work with a loving and positive attitude versus an anxious, frustrated, and negative one is that the weight really does seem to just fall away with less struggle," she wrote.

Heigl's philosophy could be beneficial whether or not you've just given birth. Weight loss should never be a race, and beating yourself up in the process won't do you (or your body) any favors.

Although Heigl isnt at hergoal weight yet, she shared in a post how she has lost 50 pounds thanks to somemental exercises and healthy habits. After all, she believes the process shouldnt be astruggle. Instead of weight lossbeing a terrible, frustrating burden and battle, its become more of a lifestyleof healthy choices I make to show my body the love it deserves.

The first thing she did was changeher relationship with food. After years of counting calories and deprivingherself of certain foods and complete food categories, she realized she wassetting an unreasonable weight goal for herself. None of those things ever really worked forme and only fostered an unhealthy, resentful relationship with my body, anattitude that I do not want to pass on to my daughters, she wrote.

With that being said, Heiglstill points out the importance of mindful eating during her weight-lossjourney. Because she doesnt do high-impact workouts that burn a lot of calories,she eats low-calorie meals. This includes things like smoothies, oatmeal andcreamy cucumber soup.

When it comes to working out, Heigl explains she doesnt really enjoy high-intensity workouts. Instead,she does things like hiking and yoga, which are better for her body type. Shedevotes at least three days to exercising.

Another surprising piece ofadvice she shared was the importance of sleep. She gets at least eight hours ofsleep every night.
