The fats we typically supplement as oil are predominately triglycerides, or dietary fats. These fats provide horses with essential fatty acids and fat-soluable vitamins.

Society has seen its share of diet crazes, even in the past decade. From low-carb and high-protein to low-fat and high-fiber, trends have come and gone and come again, making food selection challenging. Luckily, horse owners dont have as many options when theyre picking their charges feed. As herbivores, our horses diets must be high-fiber complemented by a commercial product fit to meet their life stage (performance, breeding, growing, etc.). The high-fat diet era began as a way to effectively increase calories without drastically increasing feed volume and, as researchers learn more about the benefit of fats for our four-legged friends, it appears that high-fat diets are here to stay.

Fats and oils are part of a class of molecules called lipids. Structurally, all fats contain the following components:

The fatty acids attached to glycerol vary in length and in how their own carbon molecules are linked. When single bonds link carbon atoms, the fatty acid is considered saturated. Saturated fat originates predominantly from animal fat sources such as tallow. Conversely, when one or more double bonds link the carbon atoms, the fat is unsaturated. Horse diets consist mainly of unsaturated fats such as vegetable oils.

Fats can be found in forages and grains in many forms, including di- and triglycerides, sterols, and phospholipids. The fats we typically supplement as oil are predominantly triglycerides. Each fat type varies significantly in its availability to the horse, which we will discuss later.

Once a horse ingests fat, enzymes (called lipases) in the stomach begin to break it down. A majority of fat digestion takes place in the small intestine, specifically in the duodenum and jejunum. After absorption, fats move along to the liver, adipose tissue, or elsewhere as needed for storage or use. Fats that do not get absorbed in the small intestine travel to the hindgut (the large intestine and colon), where they will be excreted in the feces.

In several studies researchers have found drastic differences in the digestibility of various fat sources in the horses diet. Fats from forages appear to be 55% digestible, whereas fats from oil are 100% digestible. This makes sense, considering that cell wall components more than likely surround the fats in forages and make them less available for digestion.

Researchers have compared the palatability of both animal and plant-based fat sources to horses and found corn oil to be the most acceptable, but other sources can be just as readily consumed. See common sources of fat used in equine diets in the table below:

It is important to understand that there are two types of fats: dietary fats and polyunsaturated fatty acids, says Stewart K. Morgan, DVM, PhD, clinical nutrition resident at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, in Blacksburg. Dietary fats, also known as the triglycerides mentioned earlier, are a concentrated source of dietary energy that provides essential fatty acids (EFAs) and can carry the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Because hydrogen and carbon atoms make up these vitamins structure, they are hydrophobic in nature. Have you heard the saying oil and water dont mix? Hydrophobic literally means water-fearing and describes oils propensity to separate from water. Therefore, fat-soluble vitamins need fats to help transport them across the small intestine. Extremely low-fat diets can potentially reduce fat-soluble vitamin absorption, as seen with decreased vitamin E levels in ponies fed an extremely low-fat diet.

Meanwhile, polyunsaturated fatty acids can be metabolized to form compounds that serve biological functions. These include omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential to the horse, says Morgan.

Horses cannot synthesize EFA on their own and rely on dietary sources to meet their needs. The two most biologically relevant EFAs, -linolenic acid (omega-3) and linoleic acid (omega-6), play a vital role in the immune system, central nervous system, and cell membrane structure, to name a few. The average equine diet tends toward greater omega-3 intakes than omega-6.

In a two-year study conducted at the University of Florida, researchers found that the fat content in bahiagrass (a warm-season pasture grass species) contains 40-55% omega-3 fatty acids and as hay contains 18-35%. Although hay and pasture are low in total fat content, typically offering less than 5%, most of the fat is made up of omega-3 fatty acids, whereas the fat in cereal grains, like what youd find in horse feed, is made up primarily of omega-6 fatty acids.

Morgan says researchers are still trying to determine horses EFA requirements, but there is some evidence that horses might benefit from fatty acid supplementation in certain conditions. Currently, Nutrient Requirements for Horses (2007) suggests horses receive a minimum of 0.5% of dry matter in linoleic acid, equivalent to approximately 50 grams per day for the 1,100-pound horse. Nutritionists have yet to set an exact requirement for -linolenic acid, but horses more than likely consume adequate levels with good-quality forage.

Fats can benefit many aspects of a horses health. Although a typical forage-based equine ration should meet a horses EFA requirements, there are benefits to supplementation under certain conditions, such as meeting a medical need to gain weight, managing inflammatory conditions like heaves and arthritis, or preventing and managing gastric ulcers, Morgan adds. Owners of performance horses, especially those requiring a large amount of digestible energy to support high-intensity performance, feed fats to increase a meals caloric density without also increasing its volume. Lets take a look at the unique benefits of fat unveiled by recent research:

Calories Pound for pound, fat contains 2 times more energy than do carbohydrates. Horses use fat for energy production without needing a drastic increase in feed volume. Broodmares and performance horses, as well as horses below ideal body condition, benefit from fat in their diets.

Skin and coat condition Many owners supplement fats to add shine and brilliance to their horses coat. Some supplement with flaxseed oil to improve a horses hair coat, but the efficacy and benefit to an animal fed a forage-based diet has yet to be determined, says Morgan.

Performance and exercise Does adding fat actually improve a horses performance? Its possible. Some of the theories behind fats role in improving performance include reducing feed intake, decreasing heat production during exercise, and sparing muscle glycogen, the storage form of glucose horses need to produce energy. Countless factors affecting performance, including training protocols and conditioning, confound the evidence and make it difficult to know for sure whether fat affects performance.

We do know that in low-intensity, long-duration exercise (think endurance riding), supplementing at least 8% fat appears to keep blood parameters such as glucose and free fatty acids closer to baseline. Researchers have also seen lower levels of plasma lactate in horses performing low-intensity exercise on this diet. These results suggest fat helps decrease carbohydrate use, having a glucose-sparing effect. The same cannot be said for high-intensity exercise, such as racing, in which fat-supplemented horses did not use glycogen any differently than unsupplemented horses. This could mean carbohydrates play a larger role than fats in fueling higher-intensity exercise.

Behavior When comparing calorie sources, some researchers have suggested that replacing typical grain diets or starch content with some fat can potentially reduce horses reactivity. Holland et al. observed less spontaneous activity (distance moved per day) and reactivity in horses fed a diet supplemented with 10% fat than horses fed a control diet with no added fat. In several studies fat-supplemented diets have resulted in decreased cortisol (the stress hormone) levels, even in young, growing horses. Foals fed a fat and fiber diet appeared less stressed and reactive after weaning versus those fed a traditional sweet feed. And in one study out of Spain, scientists found lower cortisol levels and startle reaction intensities when horses consumed high-fat diets versus a sugar and starch control diet.

For stallions there is evidence that diets supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids may improve fertility.

Reproduction Adding fat to pregnant and lactating mares diets can be key to controlling meal volume when the high calorie requirements during early lactation mean feeding more concentrate per day. For broodmares, the fatty acid profile of broodmare milk is influenced by the fatty acid profile of the diet, and for stallions there is evidence that diets supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids may improve fertility, says Morgan. In fact, in studies, stallions supplemented with fish oil high in omega-3 fatty acids showed improved sperm production and motility over control stallions.

Tying-Up Recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER) and polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM) are two equine muscle disorders. In Thoroughbreds with RER, substituting fat for starch in the diet actually reduced excitability and nervousness, known triggers for RER-prone horses, along with heart rate. Serum creatine kinase, an indicator of muscle breakdown, also decreased. Owners of horses with PSSM can lower the risk of tying-up episodes by feeding fat to reduce and replace glucose uptake and abnormal glycogen breakdown.

Gastric ulcers Substituting fat for nonstructural carbohydrates as a calorie source appears to help horses prone to gastric ulcers. Though theres a lack of research in this area, we know that fat delays gastric emptying and reduces gastric acid production and could theoretically reduce gastric ulcer severity.

Insulin resistance Says Tanja Hess, MV, MSc, PhD, associate professor in equine sciences at Colorado State University, in Fort Collins, Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in horses may improve insulin sensitivity (the bodys responsiveness to insulin signaling the removal of glucose from the blood) in insulin-resistant mares, as shown by a trend for improved insulin sensitivity in resistant mares supplemented with flaxseed or a marine supplement containing eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (forms of omega-3 fatty acids).

She also described a study (Brennan et al.) in which supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid decreased basal insulin and glucose in horses with dexamethasone-induced insulin resistance.

Metabolism When mature horses consumed high-fat meals, as opposed to meals high in non-structural carbohydrates, researchers saw a decrease in both blood glycemic and insulinemic responses.

Its important to take caution when feeding a high-fat diet to ponies, however, especially when feeding above their caloric intakes. Researchers in Germany observed higher plasma glucose and insulin concentrations after an oral glucose test in Shetland ponies fed high-fat diets. Higher insulin levels combined with elevated glucose implies that a pony is insulin resistant. Also, avoid supplementing fat in diets for any horse or pony prone to hyperlipidemia (high levels of fat in the bloodstream), as this condition can be fatal.

How long does it take to see these physiological changes associated with feeding fat or individual fatty acids? Nutritionists say a minimum of 10 to 12 weeks, although some researchers have reported changes in three to five weeks time. Consistent feeding is key to seeing results.

Dietary fats and essential fatty acids help meet a horses daily nutrient requirements but potentially provide other health benefits, as well. Morgan says that in any situation, horse owners should consult with an equine nutritionist to determine if and when they should add dietary fat or fatty acids to their horses diet.

Not all plant-based celebrities areas vocal about their cruelty-free diet as Joaquim Phoenix, or at least it's not the main topicinterviews tend to focus on,so many people on this list may actually come as a surprise. It's common knowledge in Hollywood that celebritieswill temporarily adopt a vegan diet to lose weight for glamour shots, a movie role, orto slim down for a vacation when paparazzi can catch them "off guard at the beach."

Some celebrities go on and off their vegan diets, and don't want to be "caught" eating fish or poultry or dairy, so they don't self- identify as vegan. At The Beet we applaud any attempt to embrace a plant-based or plant-forward lifestyle and this list is inclusive of anyone who has "ditched meat" or dairy, or is stealthily vegan, since they may be doing it for reasons of their own, whether it's health, the planet, or animals. Phoenix gripped the audience during the Oscars with his heartfelt speech of animal awareness, but whatever reason stars have for turning towardthe plant-based lifestyle, we want to be inspired by their healthier choices.

Sir James Paul McCartney is no stranger to a meat-free life as he's been vegetarian for 45 years. He initially went vegetarian in 1975 with his first wife Linda McCartney and began his advocacy for animal rights. You have probably heard of the movement #meatlessmondays and have seen the hashtag on your Instagram feed. Yes, it means that you avoid eating meat on Mondays but what you may not know is Paul McCartney and daughters, Stella and Mary McCartney launched the first "Meat-free Monday"campaign in 2009 that started the popular movement and hashtag. Stella McCartney, Paul's second daughter, is a well-known fashion designer to ethical vegetarian luxury clothing brand Stella McCartney.

Paul works closely with PETAtovoice opinions about animal rights. In November, helaunched a campaign with the nonprofit to encourage others to say no to turkey for Thanksgiving. The campaign shows Paul wearing a T-shirt with the saying " EAT NO" and an image of a turkey below the phrase. Just recently he used his voice to advocate for the abolishment of "wet markets" and we expect to hear more from him in the coming days on related topics.

We give Paul a round of applause on and off stage for his efforts to inspire others tolimit meat on Mondays and use ethical practices in your daily food consumption.

If you find yourself constantly singing along to the song The Greatest, then you're already a Sia fan. Sia tweeted that she is "fully vegan now" back in 2014 and stays true to her word.

She's actively involved in different vegan awareness campaigns and a documentary film. And, you probably didn't know that she recently shared a vegan pie with Scooby-Doo and Shaggy on the animated Scooby-Doo Where Are You!series. Sia cares deeply about animal welfare and teamed up with PETA to launch her own campaign to pledge the end of animal homelessness. She's also appeared in the documentary,Dominion, along withJoaquin Phoenixand Rooney Mara, which covers modern animal agriculture through hidden cameras.

Way back at the start of Grey's Anatomy,Sandra Oh took the cast out for a plant-based lunch at Truly Vegan in Hollywood. We want to ask her, was this the spark that got Ellen Pompeo to go vegan? In her effort to inspire contemporaries to eat vegan, the TV staris known to invite her friends for vegan meals that are delicious.She adopted the vegan lifestyle years ago and continues to quietly livea cruelty-free life. Understandably,she keeps it private and hasn't shared any new information about her vegan journey of late, but according to onesource, she feels it is a "lifestyle," not a dietary choice.

Brady is known to keep a super-strict, mostly plant-based diet, which he credits for staying fit, strong and healthy enough to be about to enter his 21stseason in the NFL, starting his third decade as QB for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this coming fall, after winning 6 Superbowl rings with the New England Patriots.

Gisele shared with People what she eats in a day, starting with a green juice,vegetable soup for lunch, hummus andcrudits for a snack, and leafygreens with quinoa for dinner. She also loves chamomile tea before bedtime. Talk about the perfect couple.

Alec Baldwinhas made a bigger commitmentto plant-based eating since he was first told by doctors that he was pre-diabetic and needed to change his diet. That was decades ago. But, over the last few years, he's been vocal about the benefits not only to his health but also the impact plant-based eating has on the environment. In a CNN articlewritten by Baldwin entitled "The path to a better planet goes across your plate" Baldwin explains how "Human activity is fundamentally altering the planet."

He writesthat "In wealthier countries, we also need to shift our diets away from rampant overconsumption,notably of meat, and toward a nutritious mix of plant-based foods that are less resource-intensive, require less land, and are better for our health."

Of course, Alec Baldwin met his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, at New York's Pure Food and Wine eatery, a popular raw vegan bote.

Miley adopteda gluten-free diet back in 2012for health reasons and two years later, committed to a vegan diet she still lives by today. In a tweet to PETA, she thanked the organization..." for giving me the honor of receiving the Best Voice 4 Animals award! Living a completely vegan lifestyle, whether it's what I eat or wear I am very certain that veganism is taking over and stoked to see so many brands jumpin' on this revolution!"

She became vegetarian at a young agegrowing up ina household of hunters in Western Canada, and could not fathom the idea of animal cruelty after seeing her father a hang up a deer head as a trophy.

Anderson doesn't wear real leather or faux fursince she doesn't like the concept of appearing to be wearing the real thing.Still, in order to promotemoving consumersaway from leather and fur,she sent her friends, Kim Kardashian and Melania Trump faux fur jackets so they would stop wearing real animal skins. As a professional athlete, fueling the body isa key factor to Willaim's successes. In aBon Appetitearticle, she explained that she adopted aplant-based diet back in 2012, she was eating a lot "healthier" for her sister, Venus, who eats a strict vegan diet for health reasons.

The popular grocery store, Whole Foods Market sells vegan products and nonvegan products which arises black lash from ethical vegans as CEO John Mackey follows a strict vegan diet. The successful businessman grew up in Houston Texas and told Business Insider that he would traditionally eatprocessed foods for dinner while watching TV with his family. Now, Mackey steers clear from the processed isle and eats a clean vegan diet and feels amazing at the age of 65. During his interview with Business Insider, the mentioned he eats only 3 vegan meals a day and rarely snacks, but when he does, it's only a couple of Medjool dates.

John Mackey is the author of the popular book, The Whole Foods Diet: The Lifesaving Plan for Health and Longevity,and swears that much of his success has come from eating vegan. Mackey, who's dedicated to living a plant-based lifestyle, takes his rice cooker on the road with him because he travels a lot for work. His favorite breakfast is steel-cut oats cooked in his rice cooker and he'll pop into the nearest Whole Foods for lunch,and makes a "big salad" and eats steamed veggies "with some kind of lentil" for dinner with his wife Deborah.

Jason Mraz, singer of the popular song, I'm Yours, committed to a vegan diet to support his friend diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Mraz says he eats mostly raw food and told magazinesources his favorite vegan dish is "Chocomole, a mixture of avocados, dates, cacao, agave nectar, and coconut oil."

In addition to his raw plant-based diet, Mraz told Vegetarian Times he doesn't put a lot of "stress on his diet," and he occasionally heats up a bowl of soup or roast vegetables and admits he is probably eating a 75% raw diet. And, just like Meghan Markel, Mraz loves his Vitamix and blends together a mixture of raw foods and powders before he takes a flight.

Long time vegan, Leona Lewis grew up in a vegan household and continues to eat a plant-based diet.Lewis first adopted the diet at 12 when she learned about the health risks of eating animal products but toldWomen's Health Magazine she occasionally eats an omelet. Hannah Teter changed her diet after watching the documentary, Earthlingswhen she discovered how "horrible" factory farming is. After a strict vegetarian diet, Teter liked the way she performed as an athlete and believes that her diet helped her win gold at the 2006 games.

She now considers herself "plant-based" and in an interview with the Huffington Post, Teter mentioned," I feel stronger than Ive ever been, mentally, physically, and emotionally. My plant-based diet has opened up more doors to being an athlete. Its a whole other level that Im elevating to. I stopped eating animals about a year ago, and its a new life. She made the plant-based diet transition because she felt sluggish and had low energy, she has said. The famous actress keeps in shape by eating veggies and plant-based protein and working out with a passion. The Beetcaught up with Maggie Qlast summer tohear about her latest project, her sustainable activewear line called Qeep Upthat gives back to charities that support ocean life. Winner of the first Masterchef vegan cook-off with Gordon Ramsay, MadelainePetsch was raised vegetarian and went completely vegan at age 14. She claims that she started this diet before it was "trendy" and shot a campaign for PETA last year wearing a dress made of bok choy. Petsch says her vegan diet allows her to feel "healthier" and not "lethargic."

She told PETA that her favorite restaurant is Veggie Grill, but it changes from time to time and her favorite snack is shaved beets popped in the oven, baked into crispy chips. The advice Petsch gives to plant-leaning or plant-curious in her PETA video is: "As long as you're aware, that's the first step."

After doing a little sleuthing on her social media platforms we think Millie Bobbi Brown qualifies as plant-based. Whether or not she is actually skipping all meat and dairy, one thing is for sure: She eats mostly salads, vegetables and grains and lives a predominantly plant-based lifestyle full of healthy foods. The famous actress recently launched a new vegan beauty line called Florence by Millis. The makeup products, which include skin tints and eye gel pads, are certified vegan by the animal rights organization PETA.

The grammy-nominated sisters went vegan for a week with their mom but liked it so much they decided to stick with it. For one thing, it helps keep their "voices in shape" by eating a vegan diet and they emphasize the fact that dairy helps to limit extra mucus build-up, according toa PETA interview. The proteges of Beyonce were discovered when their YouTube cover of her song "Pretty Hurts" reached the superstar herself, and she helped launch their careers. Now 19 and 17, the duo have 2.4 million followers on Instagram and havemoved from their hometown of Atlanta to LA to star in their own show, Grownish. They found that the vegan lifestyle was super easy in their hometown."Eggs and dairy never sat well with me so it was easy, Chloe toldComplex. When we moved to L.A., it really became easy. So many vegan restaurants and vegan aisles in the grocery store are like heaven for us!

Best known for her role asLizzie Mcguirein the long-running series, Hilary Duff is a recent vegan advocate and entrepreneur. She recently launched the vegan and cruelty-freeeyeshadow palette, "Day Dreamer" and changed her diet to plant-based last fall.

In addition to her ethical and cruelty-free practices, Duff partnered with Unilever and Walmart to create a campaign that educates consumers on recycling practices. Duff notes, "I care about the planet and the future of what it looks like for my kids...and generations to follow us.The time is now to be responsible and lower our carbon footprint."

Duff follows a "clean eating plan" which doesn't include meat or dairy because she wants to lower her carbon footprint. She told One Green Planetshe's lost 10 pounds since she's started eating this way last October.

Alison Brie Can Lift Another HumanAnd Not Just On TV – Women’s Health

What are some activities you can do, no sweat, thanks to muscle memory? I can dribble a soccer ball, weave a lanyard into a staircase pattern, and summon lyrics to any Top 40 song post-1995.

Alison Bries recall includes jumping from the high corner ropes of a wrestling ring, her body in a horizontal plane, and landing crosswise on the body of another human as they fall in perfect coordination to the ground (a crossbody). She can also hurl herselfagain horizontallyonto someones back and hold on while that person spins (a crucifix). Not only that; she knows how to hold her frame upside down, legs straight up toward the heavens, while supporting herself by grasping the torso of the human below her (a 12 oclock suplex). This is how I find her on a Sunday in February, in a wrestling ring with pink ropes, her body upturned on pro wrestler Chavo Guerrero Juniors and pointing to the sky.

It really does come back pretty quickly, says Alison, stretching afterward, as if she is referencing a golf swing or how to French-braid. By season four of GLOW, we have the muscle memory. The thing to relearn is the fearlessness and commitment. You cant do any of the moves halfway.

The Netflix series about the 80s TV show Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling is entering its fourth and final season, and it has changed a lot for the 37-year-old. It marked the first project for which she was number one on the call sheet, and the first (and, she imagines, only) time shell be in a show requiring dramatic acting, broad comedy chops, and major physicality. Since GLOW debuted in 2017, Alison has been vocal about how it seismically changed her. It helped with my relationship to my body times a million, she says. Before, I always felt at odds with it; I wanted it to be something it wasnt. But I didnt have the tools to do that in a healthy way.

Now, after four seasons, Alison has a confidence that stems in part from seeing her body as useful rather than merely aesthetic. Even Alisons stuntwoman has noticed the shift in her as she learns to trust herself more: Alisons training on GLOW has made her more comfortable doing her own small stunts in other projects, says Helena Barrett. Shes gotten through four years of a highly physical role with zero injuries, echoes her trainer, Jason Walsh, CEO of Rise Nation. Shes doing the jumps, the flips, the lands. Thats typically not what actors do.

Alison says she used to approach fitness all wrong. Everything was cardio, cardio, cardio. Nine years ago she started working with Walsh, mostly out of a sense of obligation. I thought, Im in my late 20s, I should probably start doing some strength training. What she did with Walsh changed when she started preparing for GLOW.

It took the motivation out of being skinny for Hollywood standards and made it about being strong for lifting other women, literally. There was a real goal. Because of that, Walsh has Alison focus on primitive movementswarming up by crawling or rolling, then pushing and pulling a heavy sled, performing trap bar deadlifts, and doing squats, presses, or lunges with a FitFighter (a handheld steel hose).

I mention that after she entered the GLOW ring, it looked to me as if her body shrank as she got stronger. Im glad you said that, actually, because being small was a side effect of being super fit and muscular, Alison replies without missing a beat. I like to lead the charge against people thinking that strength training makes women bulky. Jason uses my body as an example at the gym, because I can lift more than a lot of people. You can pack a lot of muscle into a lean little body.

Given the ways her physical self has changed over the past four years, I ask Alison if she still grapples with body dysmorphia, something Id read affected her, growing up in L.A. Oh, definitely. Still do! she says, matter-of-factly. In the past, she felt it had a hold on her. I go back to red carpet photos where I thought I looked so horrible, and there are some where I now think, God, I looked beautiful. And Ill remember: An hour before that I was in tears; I thought I was so disgusting. I think its something Ill probably be working through my whole life. And depression too.

Mental illness runs in Alisons family; her maternal grandmother had schizophrenia and went through periods of homelessness. The rest of my family then dealt with the trickle-down effects of trauma, she says. And that meant depression more than anything. The issue traces a line on both sides of Alisons genealogy and occasionally comes out of nowhere and really blindsides me. While some of her loved ones have benefited from anti-depressants, Alison says being active is her way of combating the condition. When Ive been in a really serious depression, Ill drag myself to a yoga classeven if I dont want to be around peopletears streaming down my face. But, Get in class, get out of your head, get blood flowing. It ends up helping eventually.

Working out six days a week (three days with Walsh, three days of activities like hikes and riding her Peloton) is one way Alison maintains her mental wellness. She also credits open communication as something that helps. Im so lucky Im married to a really wonderful, open person, she says of her husband, actor Dave Franco. We have great lines of communication, and I can talk often about my feelings. Dave gave her perspective when she was in the depths of self-loathing about her body. Its been funny talking to him about it. He said, Before I knew you, Im not sure I believed body dysmorphia was a real thing. Its so interesting to me what you seeand what Im seeing when Im looking at youand the frank discussions we have about it.

A streamlined diet is another thing that keeps Alisons mental state balanced. I used to feel more out of control with it, she says, describing how intense sugar cravings would lead to unhealthy choices and spin her into sadness about her body. Being more diligent has been helpful for me mentally.

You wouldnt believe how diligent. As Alison gets closer to shooting a season of GLOW, she ups her lean protein intake, removes sugar, and doesnt eat carbohydrates after 4 p.m. For breakfast, she has oatmeal with protein powder, then she works out and has a post-sweat chocolate and sea salt Aprs vegan protein shake. A few hours later shell make a tuna salad with spinach and whatever she has on handolives, avocado, cucumber. For dinner, she whips up ground-turkey stir-fries; one from a Gwyneth Paltrow cookbook calls for eggplant, and another she makes with onion, ginger, garlic, and low-sodium tamari sauce. When shes not prepping or shooting, she tends to eat vegan or vegetarian.

Nutrition is just part of the logistics shes navigating as she preps for the Netflix series and shoots Happiest Seasona rom-com led by Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis about a gay couple who go home for the holidays and have to pretend to be straight. Shes been flying back and forth between Pittsburgh and L.A. and exercising in apartments and trailers. I have workouts for any type of situation, she says. Her routines from Walsh are heavy on calisthenics done at a slow tempo, like pushups and Bulgarian split squats. She also uses the PulseTread app for intervals on the treadmill. For recovery, she is loyal to foam rollers, her Theragun, and Epsom salt baths after ingesting a few drops of CBD oil.

A car is idling outside, ready to take Alison to a flight back to Pittsburgh for Happiest Season. (Shell also appear in this springs Promising Young Woman, a chilling #MeToo revenge thriller.) In a week, shell be back in the ring, rehearsing with all the women of GLOW. Its exciting! she says. My chance to rebond with all the girls. Does it feel as if youre on a team more than a cast, I ask, knowing that Alison was a full-fledged theater nerd and unlikely to have soccer in her muscle memory. One hundred percent, she says, beaming. And I feel like the captain. I want to motivate everyone. Shes going to miss her character, Ruthmullet perm and allwhen she has to say goodbye, but shes taking wrestling, and all its lessons, with her. Its part of me forever.
