Weight loss: Tesco worker lost 7 stone and dropped five dress sizes with this diet plan – Express

Posted: June 29, 2020 at 1:46 pm

As the nation has been told to stay home during the coronavirus, with only one outing a day for exercise initially, many dieters have had to put their weight loss goals on hold. However, though the lockdown could mean a lot of Britons are moving less - and perhaps even eating more as theyre tempted by the fridge - one slimmer has defied the odds. The Dumfries-based woman has now lost over seven stone, and said the lockdown gave her the final push she needed.

Wilma Woodgate, 55, moved to Dumfries in June 2018 and wanted a new life and a new start - plus a new body.

Weighing 20st 11lbs, Wilma said she was squeezing into a size 24 dress at the time and felt horrible.

I was struggling to walk any distance, admitted Wilma.

Climbing stairs was a chore, not having the energy to play with my grandchildren who are nine and six was heart-breaking, but the last straw for me was going to a theme park with the family, being really excited to go on a ride, but the belt DIDNT fasten, and I had to leave the ride.

I was humiliated and it was then that I decided enough was enough.

Wilma decided to join WW (Weight Watchers re-imagined) on June 6, 2018.

My daughter Sarah was getting married in Antigua in August 2019 and I didnt want to be the fat mother of the bride and hate the pictures, so I wanted to lose five stone for her big day, said Wilma.

Wilma said she was incredibly nervous before her first session at the slimming club.

I was very nervous to step through the doors to Irene Notmans workshop in Lochvale House, and felt sick at the thought of standing on the scales, especially in a new and very unfamiliar place. But I need not have worried, Irene was amazing and made me feel very much at ease - more than can be said for the scales.

Despite being a technophobe, Wilma said she soon got to grips with the smart points plan and the online app.

Wilma has four daughters, including 29-year-old triplets, and revealed her weight loss journey wasnt easy.

There were weeks when I felt really down, and thought I had such a huge mountain to climb and would I ever get there, but I never ever thought about giving up. I didn't want to embarrass myself or my daughter on her wedding day, said Wilma.

Wilma changed her diet, cooking recipes from the WW plan for herself and her husband, as well as replacing snacks with healthier choices.

There were obstacles in my way like having my grandsons staying over on weekends for movie nights, and the popcorn, crisps, chocolate and takeaways were part of the fun - but I started to substitute my snacks with WW chocolate bars and crisps, explained Wilma.

Wilma has now dropped from a size 24 to a much slimmer size 14, but shes still getting used to shopping for her new figure.

Being quite tall and a size 24 made it difficult shopping for clothes, I hated it! said Wilma. Trying to convince myself I could squeeze into an 18, it was soul destroying! Even now when I go shopping (even though I'm a size 14) I still take the size 24 into the changing room with me just in case... it's crazy.

However, when lockdown hit, Wilma was worried she wasnt going to reach her goal weight - but a new job gave her the help she needed to slim down.

Wilma got a new job at Tesco, working for the online team to help make up the orders for online customers - which means plenty of moving around.

I love it, because now I need to walk and be active, and do at least 10,000 steps a shift! revealed Wilma.

I have the step app on my phone, and love to record the activity on my fitness section on the WW app.

Wilma said she can now run around and play with the grandkids, walk up the stairs without getting out of breath, and has more confidence as a result.

The happy slimmer also said the diet was made easier by the fact she didnt have to cut anything out.

The WW plan means no food is off limits, but is counted up with a points system with a set number of points allowed per day depending on what youre trying to achieve.

Even restaurants were on the menu, as before lockdown Wilma would save up a few points by eating light beforehand so that she could choose whatever she liked when she went out for the evening.

My eating has changed so much for the better. I used to eat large breakfasts to feed two people, takeaways, pizzas, lots of chocolate bars, and I was a constant snacker, but now I still constantly snack but on fresh fruit, homemade soups, salads; and I love to cook now, something I never did before, Wilma added.

Weight loss: NHS advise this is the best breakfast food to add to your diet plan to slim – Express

Posted: February 29, 2020 at 2:42 pm

Weight loss is achieved in the kitchen - and eating the right foods can boost success. The NHS have their own 12 week diet plan, with a specific food advised at breakfast time.

Kicking off week one of their plan, the NHS tell dieters to make sure there is plenty of fibre in their meals.

This is particularly true at breakfast time - often thought of as the most important meal of the day.

They said: "Adding some fibre to your breakfast can help you stay feeling full until lunch and reduce the urge for a midmorning snack.

"Eating food with lots of fibre will help you feel full for longer, so youre more likely to stick to your calorie limit."

So, what exactly should dieters prepare in the morning to get the right amount of fibre in their meals?

The NHS suggest two easy ways to modify popular breakfast foods to make them fibre-rich.

Swap white bread for wholemeal or wholegrain varieties.

Swap sugary cereals for high-fibre cereals such as wholegrain wheat cereals, unsweetened muesli, or porridge oats, and dont forget to check the salt content.

They also remind dieters that eating the skin on fruits such as apples and pears adds in natural fibre, and eating fruit and vegetables is a healthy, low-calorie way to fill up.

The NHS suggestions are a good way to get started - but more those with more confidence in the kitchen might want to prepare food from scratch. Some of the best high fibre breakfast foods include:

Best high fibre cereals

The NHS suggests a list of the best wholegrain cereals to choose. They also recommed chopping up a banana to add on top for extra sweetness.

Exercise is also a key part of losing weight, and eating the right foods to fuel a workout is key to success.

Personal trainer and TV guru Jessie Pavelka explained what foods you should eat before training to get the best results.

He said: Whether it be running, cycling, yoga, that short and fiery HIIT session, or readying yourself for a weight session at the gym, were all guilty of failing to take a second to pause and think about how were fuelling our body pre-workout.

What slimmers eat depends on the type of workout they are about to do and it can make a huge difference to the results.

"It's tough, but I think the great thing about South Beach [Diet] is that I have the food at my home and I keep the snacks with me," she shared. "But the great thing is even if you don't have South Beach physically in your hands, you can still do South Beach."

"It's heavy proteins, It's veggies and It's very low carbs. That's the philosophy I used to lose all of my baby weight," the songstress explained. "And so when I am on the road, I do grab the bars and the snacks to stay on top of it, that way I don't grab like a bag of Cheetos or something."

She continued, "It's really easy and you don't have to give up everything that you love. That's the important part. If you starve yourself, you're just going to go crazy."It takes more than simply eating right to get abs like those. So what is her go to exercise routine?

I'll do it in the hotel room," she shared. "There is many places you can do this, but you can write a list of little circuits to do, like 20 jumping jacks, 10 push ups, and you just do it over and over and over again until you break a sweat. 20 minutes, that's all you need."

Even her professional athlete husband Eric Decker has trouble keeping up with her! "She's very athletic. We did a workout with my trainer not too long ago and I'm huffing and puffing and she's just like, "Okay, what's next?"' he revealed.

"I'm just a little energizer bunny, I just have a lot of energy," Jessie explained. "I'm going to be that little old lady that's just like walking around and just like full of energy, probably with bright red hair or something crazy."

Even with their focused commitment tohealthy eating and exercise, they still indulge in the occasional cheat day. "My cheat days are bread, bread, bread and cookies. I love bread! I have these little cheese trays at home," Jessie dished.

As for Eric, fatty foods is the way to go. "Donuts. Donuts and cake," the NFL star revealed. "He cheats all day long and his body still looks like this," Jessie joked. "He could eat like 6,000 calories a day if he wanted and nothing would happen to him."

How Testosterone Replacement Therapy Is Transforming Aging – GQ

Posted: May 20, 2022 at 1:44 am

Those are just the well-known men who have talked about hormone therapies, of course. Speculation surrounds middle-aged rich guys like Jeff Bezos, who is rumored to be an investor in a buzzed-about anti-aging startup and seems to be aging in reverse into Billionaire Mr. Clean, with viral fit pics to match. (For the record, people close to Bezos attribute his transformation strictly to diet and exercise.)

In any case, it's not just the rich and famous: Doctor-approved doping is gaining ground among the everyday guy.

Youd be surprised with how many people are on hormone therapies, says Dr. Jessie Cheung, a dermatologist whose focus, in part, is on these treatments. You look, feel, perform, think, recover, and age better.

Testosterone is associated with physical changes like muscle growth and mental changes like confidence and aggression, though there is robust debate over the extent to which those effects should be understood as masculine, to what extent theyre shaped by existing social context, and whether these therapies show effects at a population level.

In any case, men are seeking these mental and physical changes, and Dr. Cameron Sepah, a professor of psychiatry at the school of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, has noticed the uptick in popularity. Hes a clinician first, but has something of a vested interest as CEO of Maximus, which offers personalized treatment plans (a monthly membership is $149.99) to help men double their testosterone levels. Maximus men, Sepah claims, report having more energy, motivation, drive, and confidence.

They dont have the need for that afternoon nap anymore when they get sluggish toward the end of the day, he says.

Chris Jones, who joined Maximus about a year ago, is 39 and works as an attorney in Los Angeles. When the pandemic hit, Jones became interested in assessing his overall health. While he says he never felt particularly tired or off-balance, he also had never taken a testosterone test, and was surprised to see that his total level was 260 ng/dL.

Since popping the enclomiphene, Jones says his level has jumped to 730. I definitely feel more energy, more calm, more focus, he says. Just overall stronger and better. The naps and extra cups of coffee he occasionally needed in the afternoons have tapered off. And his verticalJones works with a dunk trainerhas gone up eight inches.

While testosterone therapy provides benefits, some doctors will caution against turning to testosterone replacement right away if youre feeling fatigued or less potent in the bedroom.

Theres all these lifestyle factors that will cause low testosterone or sort of simulate low-testosterone symptoms, says Dr. Kenneth Litwin, a physician who works with Fitzgerald at the Sandy Hook Clinic in Connecticut. If you help the person to identify that and help them work on all those things, they may never need testosterone.

Thats because testosterone levels can be affected by many factors. Getting eight hours of sleep or correcting a nutritional deficiency, like a low level of vitamin D, will restore your testosterone to its natural baseline. Strength training, looking for ways to decrease stress, and cutting out smoking are also key.

What To Eat To Lose More Weight During The Lockdown – Medical Daily

Posted: June 8, 2020 at 11:53 pm

Finding some difficulty in losing some weight while youre on lockdown? Heres what to do and what to eat.

What To Eat To Lose Weight While On Lockdown

Earlier this year, an unprecedented virus outbreak pushed governments from all over the world to issue a nationwide lockdown in order to help slow down the spread and keep everyone safe.

Since then, gyms have been closed and people have been asked to stay inside their homes for the time being, as well as to observe physical distancing from others.

For many people who are following fitness plans, this may sound like a disaster. Thankfully, theres still a lot you can do (and eat) while at home.

For example, you can make your grocery trips count more by choosing healthier food that is sure to help you shed a few pounds. Whats even better is that while on lockdown, people who want to lose weight dont need to follow restrictive eating plans. In fact, eating more colorful foods such as fruits and vegetables (and ESPECIALLY fruits and vegetables) can help keep your body in tip-top shape while also helping you lose weight better since most of them have fiber, which is known to help your digestion while also helping you feel fuller for longer.

Eat. Food heals, nourishes and nurtures our bodies and our minds. It brings us together, connecting us to ourselves and the world around us. Color on your plate is always a good start to eating to feel good, Jessie Pavelka, a fitness expertin the U.K., said.

As for what to do, you dont need to follow any specific routine because the general idea is to make sure that youre moving each day. You can do this by doing simple exercises in your house, such as cardio and some simple strength training.

But exercising also needs motivation, and with the free time that we have, its good to slow down and think why we are doing this then remind ourselves why we are making these healthier choices.

Its like your choice of meals; we all have a general idea on what we need to eat to be healthy, but the question is why do we make those choices? Motivation starts with awareness, Pavelka added.

Obesity may occur because of genetics, family history, environment and medical conditions, among other reasons that affect body weight. Pixabay

Best weight loss: Eating more of this food can help burn fat during lockdown – expert tips – Express

Posted: June 7, 2020 at 12:51 am

Earlier this year, the UK government issued a nationwide lockdown to respond to the coronavirus crisis.

Since then, gyms have been closed and most people have been asked to stay indoors as much as possible.

While this is sure to have got in the way of many fitness plans, slimmers can still stay healthy at home.

Jessie Pavelka, fitness and wellbeing expert who has recently launched the app, JP4, shared four ways to get into shape without leaving the house.

READ MORE: Weight loss: This is the best time to eat to burn belly fat

When it comes to changing the diet, slimmers do not need to follow restrictive plans.

In fact, eating more colourful foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, can change the body, the expert suggested.

Jessie told Express.co.uk: "Eat. Food heals, nourishes and nurtures our bodies and our minds. It brings us together, connecting us to ourselves and the world around us.

"Colour on your plate is always a good start to eating to feel good.

With gyms closed, finding the right exercises can be more challenging.

DON'T MISS

However, slimmers should focus on making sure they move each day, no matter what they do.

"Focus on that sweat element," Jessie said. "Each day we have an opportunity to live through our bodies.

"We must make time to give ourselves the gift of movement. Whether thats 20 minutes or an hour, show up!

To stay on track, those hoping to slim down should make an effort to think about what they are doing.

He continued: "Keeping fit and healthy at home can be less about exercise, and more about motivation.

"Its like your choice of meals; we all have a general idea on what we need to eat to be healthy, but the question is why do we make those choices? Motivation starts with awareness.

Dieters can also focus on different goals each day to help get into a healthy routine.

The expert added: "So that you can clear away mental clutter and look at your choices with a clear perspective, using what I call the Four Elements can help.

"They give you a framework that enables you to show up as the best version of you, something you can engrain into your daily routine.

"Ask yourself each day if you have focused on each one, that is Eat (diet), Sweat (exercise), Think (awareness) and Connect (connection to your feelings, and others) and youre on the road to success.

Creating the right mindset will also help slimmers get the best results while at home.

By taking time to process, dieters could set themselves up for the day and it could promote healthy habits, the expert suggested.

Jessie explained: "Think and Connect are both relative to mindfulness. When we Think, it fosters heightened awareness; consideration towards our actions.

"There is great power in simply being in the moment, especially in the challenging times that we all face, so we need to stop and just focus on the 24 hours we are in.

Connection to ourselves, another person, a group (via technology perhaps) or something greater than ourselves will help you continue to retain perspective, and ultimately together we have the opportunity to achieve more.

Jeff Bezos and the New Face of Male Vanity – TownandCountrymag.com

Posted: April 11, 2020 at 12:41 am

When Jeff Bezos, the Amazon kingpin, debuted his new muscular physique at the Sun Valley Conference in 2017, he almost broke the internet. His Vin Dieselesque guns launched countless memes about how the dweebs dweeb had transformed himself into a jacked-up specimen worthy of an action franchise.

In interviews Bezos credits his diet (which includes roast iguana and octopus for breakfast), his unwavering commitment to working out, and eight hours of sleep. But not everyone is buying it.

Clean livingthats the catchphrase, isnt it? quips Patricia Wexler, the ne plus ultra of Manhattan dermatologists. Very few admit to doing any procedures.

Not a chance its just diet and exercise, says Roberta Del Campo, a dermatologist based in Miami, the countrys plastic surgery capital. Behind the scenes these people are getting all sorts of injectables and body sculpting treatments, such as Emsculpt and Trusculpt Flex, which have surged in popularity, especially among men, in the last couple of years.

Drew AngererGetty Images

Other experts suspect that captains of industry such as Bezos, who is 56, are going to even greater lengths to project vigor for both boards and broads. The tech titans are all looking much better than they used to, says Jessie Cheung, a Chicago-based cosmetic dermatologist whose holistic approach often involves testosterone and growth hormone substitutes, especially for men of a certain age who are lacking in muscle and look frail.

Access to bio-hacking tools such as stem cells and hormones is allowing men to look, perform, and think better. Its worth noting that Bezos, along with fellow billionaire Peter Thiel, invested in Unity Biotechnology, a company researching drugs and treatments to keep aging at bay. Im pretty sure hes gotten a taste of some good stuff, Cheung says.

Welcome to the new male vanity, in which even Silicon Valley bigwigs considerably younger than Bezos are resorting to newfangled procedures to avoid aging out of the workforce. The stakes have never been higher. American men underwent 1.1 million noninvasive cosmetic procedures in 2018a 72 percent increase since 2000, a trend that shows no signs of abating. In its forecast for 2020, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery predicts the continued rise of the Daddy-Do-Over, the male equivalent of the Mommy Makeover, as men look to boost their confidence and improve their physical appearance.

Its a lesson in maintenance the men in the presidential race would do well to learn. In the not so distant past politicians could dismiss reporters questions about whether theyd had a face-lift, as Arnold Schwarzenegger did during his 2003 run for governor of California, when he joked that they must be confusing him with Cher. Now pols and pundits of every party are being grilled as mercilessly about their appearance as about their Medicare plans.

"Unfortunately for Biden, you can see the work thats been done," says one NYC dermatologist.

Joe Bidens forehead and Donald Trumps hair flap and skin color are dissected with the rigor of Kremlinologists (some of them actually are Kremlinologists, in Trumps case). And with good reason: If Hillary Clintons wrinkles, Elizabeth Warrens glasses, and Amy Klobuchars eyebrows are fair game, why not the nipped and tucked peacocks strutting around on Capitol Hill?

Denials about the scars on the side of Bidens face are, according to the experts, malarkey. Unfortunately for Biden, who has obviously had hair transplants and Botox, among other things, you can see the work thats been done, says Wexler. Nobody should be talking about work. When you have work done, the last thing you want is for people to notice it.

The queen of Fraxels laser focus on male primping is not partisan. Mr. Trump has definitely had workand not great work, at that, she adds. Give him his crumb, though: He wasnt bad looking when he was younger and in better shape.

Trumps penchant for cosmetic adjustments has been an open if much denied secret since at least 1991, when Ivana Trump disclosed his scalp reduction surgery and chin and waist liposuction in their divorce papers. In February the world was served a fresh reminder, when the president was photographed, in an image that quickly went viral, stepping out of Marine One with a windswept rug and a fake tan for the history books.

At tony dermatologist practices from coast to coast, man-tans like Trumps and obvious old-school work like the kind favored by Vladimir Putin is frowned uponif anyone can move any facial muscles at all. Instead, next-gen lasers such as NeoSkin by Aerolase, IBeam, and Nd:YAG are used to eliminate redness and discoloration.

Instead of surgical face-lifts, which, to be fair, remain popular in certain parts of the country (I definitely see them more on the West Coast, Wexler says, where its been around longer and is more accepted), men of means are turning to noninvasive procedures, most notably Ultherapy, a relatively painless FDA-cleared ultrasound treatment that requires no downtime.

Edward George/Alamy Stock Photo

For the ultimate injection of masculine vigor, though, Cheung works with membersand not necessarily of Congress. We make penises bigger and better, she says. Self-confidence for men is tied up with their penises and how well they work. We give them their swagger back.

Men looking for an extra glide in their stride are considering the augmented Priapus Shot, or P-shot, Cheung says, a treatment thats the male equivalent of the O-shot. She is also increasingly recommending a machine called Emsella, better known as the Orgasm Throne, which generates approximately 11,000 Kegel contractions in 30 minutes (it was originally developed for female incontinence). It really gives you an invigorating kick in the pants, Cheung says.

If the recent past is anything to go by, theres no guarantee that the candidates who end up squaring off in November will provide anything resembling accurate medical recordswhich is a shame, as they would make interesting reading. Like Bezos and less heralded moguls across the country, they are unlikely to reveal any touch-ups to anyone but their best pals.

Men will come in and ask for something their friend has had done, Wexler says. But you wont hear anyone on Jimmy Fallon saying, Im so tired: I was at the dermatologist all day.

This story appears in the May 2020 issue of Town & Country.
