Comedian Kate Barron on drastic weight loss, why chairs were a source of terror and her new Edinburgh show – Evening Standard

Posted: August 1, 2022 at 2:19 am

A

lot of people made major life changes during the pandemic, but none more so than the Canadian comedian Kate Barron. Just a few months into a new life in Britain having split with her long-term partner in Canada, left her job and home and moved here with the intention of finally taking comedy seriously as a career, only to be stuck in a houseshare in London with people she barely knew she made a secret decision. Without even telling her flatmates, she got on a plane, flew to Turkey, signed a few forms she literally couldnt read and, without telling a soul, had 80 per cent of her stomach removed.

By the time any of her family found out and saw her again she had shed 13 stone, which is, to give you some contemporary context, almost exactly the weight of Chris Evans bulked up to play Captain America.

Barrons decision, the journey to making it, and the journey it began is the subject of her new Edinburgh show, Losing Myself. And as she genially weaves a tale of what is, really, an extreme transformation, you begin to realise the extent of how the world is simply not set up for larger people.

Its hard to freely develop your own style because there just arent enough clothes available in the shops, and where there are, theyre usually at the very back where no-ones going to see you. A long-haul flight in economy is physical torture to the overweight, chairs of all kinds are a source of trepidation. Barron tells a story about arriving for a lovely dinner, and all my skinny little beautiful friends took all the chairs without arms, she says. Too embarrassed to speak up, Barron spent four hours eating and drinking in what was effectively a vicious arse-vice.

That shame is something she deals with in the show, but her attitude to it isnt remotely self-pitying. When a friend who had been at that dinner saw a preview of the show, she was horrified. Shes like, Im so sorry, I never thought and Im like, Its okay, Barron says when we meet in the Standards photo studio after her shoot.

I also never said anything. So it cant entirely be on you, because I never said it. I just took these moments of discomfort and anxiety and I held them all into myself, which made it really painful and lonely, but I was too ashamed to have those conversations with my friends.

But surely thats not on you, I say. I think it is and it isnt, she says. You want to have close relationships with people and I dont think I was being really authentic with them either. My weight was definitely me wearing my mental health on the outside. And it was just so visible to people. But I couldnt expect people to know all these things about me if I wasnt being honest with them, either.

And my friends, after I lost all this weight, were going, I didnt even know this was an issue for you. I just thought you were super confident and happy with who you are. You never let it show that you were anything other than that. And that just goes to show how isolating it can be, because its all I thought about.

And yet for the past seven years, at her heaviest (she wont divulge the weight she reached, but shows me a picture of herself on stage and she genuinely looks like a different woman), she was getting up on stage night after night to do stand up, something most people, no matter their shape or size, wouldnt dream of doing.

TODO: define component type tiktok

I wanted to do it since I was a kid, she says, but I just didnt have the guts. And I thought it was one of those things that only famous people did. I didnt know you could get famous doing comedy.

She doesnt come from a performing family, but they were loud and crazy. She and her brother and sister were largely raised by her grandmother while her parents worked, and I was definitely the one being like, Look at me, look at me. Im the baby. Thats why Im so obnoxious.

But by the time she realised comedy was something anyone could have a stab at, in her 20s, I had no self confidence; they would have eaten me alive up there. I couldnt have done it. She comes from a family of large people, but her weight gain had crept up on her. It happens gradually. You just start to get less and less comfortable in your own skin and in the world.

Ultimately it was lockdown that pushed Barron to the point of drastic action. I just finally went, Enough. And I think it maybe it was Covid, it was not being able to perform, it was being lonely being over here and away from people and distractions.

I'm very much a go go go kind of person. When I first moved here, for the whole first year, I had a full-time job and I was doing around 12 shows a week, still trying to have a social life and make friends in a new city and everything. I just would not allow myself to slow down for a minute. Because if you slow down, you'll hear your thoughts, basically. And then Covid hit, and there was nothing but thoughts.

I just thought, What am I doing with my life? I'm really miserable. And eventually, you need to take accountability for that, eventually you cannot blame your upbringing or the poor nutrition we had, or being working class. And my parents, they only knew what they knew, and they were doing their best. And you know, I haven't lived with them for almost 20 years. So is this really their problem still? Or is it mine? I just had to sort of own that and go, I am still in my 30s; I can choose to get this under control.

She didnt go into it completely recklessly. Barron understood her action was drastic and started getting regular therapy before she made the trip, to cope with the inevitable emotional rollercoaster. I was like, Alright, what are we going to talk about? My messed up relationship with my family, or my f***boys ? And she was like, No, I think the worst relationship you have in your life is with yourself. And I was like, Hey, coach, Im paying you a lot of money. Isn't this supposed to make me feel good?

The therapist was right, though. I just hated myself. Anything you thought about me, when you saw me as a bigger person, I guarantee you, I thought it, but much, much worse. And that's how I would talk to myself all the time. I try really hard not to do that now.

The surgery hasnt been a magic bullet. Part of Barrons show goes into the insanely strict diet that she had to adopt after the surgery, and the weird stuff shes not allowed to do (you cant chew gum, drink through straws or drink carbonated drinks because it creates too much air in your tiny stomach; all the precious space must be preserved for nutrition). And there are other, less obvious pitfalls. Shopping is still a nightmare, but for different reasons.

Because I was always bigger, the clothes I would gravitate towards would just be big, black, oversized baggy clothes to hide myself. So now I dont even know what my style is. Ill go to Westfield and Ill get completely overwhelmed. Where can I even start? How do you find your style after [so many] years?

Shes still getting used to her new self. Even now I will see a chair now or see a booth in a restaurant, Ill be like, Im not gonna be able to fit. Ill catch myself in the mirror sometimes and I dont even really recognise myself. But I also dont really recognise who I was before. I look at these pictures sometimes, and I go, who even was she? I dont feel like her anymore.

Barron says shes happier now than shes ever been. She has just turned 39, and on August 10 itll be seven years since I went up and did my first open mic, she says, with deserved pride.

She is a little envious, she says, of comics her age who have been on stage for decades, but then says that until shed lived a bit more she wouldnt have had anything to talk about. My [earlier] comedy was very surface. It was about like dating and sex; the easy jokes. This is the first time Ive ever opened up and have talked about vulnerable things on stage, and really had something to say.

It seems to be having an impact. Barrons been developing her latest show on stage, and after one recent gig, I had a woman who was sobbing. She came up to me afterwards and said, can I just hug you? And I had another guy last night, this really classically handsome man, great physique. And he was like, You probably don't think it's true, but I'm telling you, a lot of that shit hit home. And I was like, Wow. I don't know why, maybe he has somebody big in his life and hes never really thought about these things before, or maybe he was a bully, or maybe he had weight issues. I don't know. But it's been really interesting to get feedback from people. And I just feel like, because I'm being more real on stage, I think people can feel it, so they're giving me so much more love and appreciation now.

How often are people actually that focused, listening to you share your ideas and thoughts? I just think comedy is the most beautiful, pure art form. I love it so much.

Katie Maloney-Schwartz Shares the Exact Foods Behind Her 25-Pound Weight Loss – Bravo

Posted: May 26, 2020 at 5:45 pm

Last month, Katie Maloney-Schwartz revealed that she "lost a little over 20 pounds"with help from a nutritionist who shared "a wealth of knowledge on what kind of foods to be eating." Now, as the Vanderpump Rules star is detailing the exact daily meal plan she follows, she is making it clear that her new food choices are far from a temporary diet.

"I think dieting is not sustainable and its very short term and just sets you up for failure," Katie explained to HollywoodLife."So, now I just feel like I just know how to like eat for my body and metabolism."

For Katie, that means starting her day with eggs whipped up by her husband,Tom Schwartz.I usually make her a partial egg white omelet with avocado and feta cheese, a little hot sauce," Tom said."Its these little things, I feel like they add up. We dont do top and bottom bun or top and bottom bread.

Some, some healthy fats in there as well," Katie continued. "Some greens, probably. Then Ill have some tea or coffee."

Becauseshe's "not a huge snacker," eating between meals didn't initially come easily for Katie. "That was the hardest part of it all," she said."Just training myself to eat more frequently than I normally would."

Now, "for snacks its always fruits or a little bite of nuts and cheese or something," Katie told HollywoodLife.Theres fruits like apples, or a little bit of banana. Because even though those are carbs themselves, I like those. My favorites are berries. And then some little handful of some nuts or some nut butter. I always use some nut butters."

When it's time for lunch, Katie turns to the place she describedas"where the Kardashians get their salads," Health Nut in Woodland Hills."Ive fallen in love with that place," she said. "They have these massive giant protein salads with roasted chicken, sunflower seeds and cucumbers and carrots and lettuce and tomatoes and they have this really nice house dressing they put on it.

For dinner, Katie explained, the couple will "make chicken with green beans or broccoli, or something just nice and easy on the side.

While Katie said she and Tom are pretty disciplined eaters," staying home amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has presented some challenges. "I will say, during quarantine, it is especially hard to just not let loose and just completely fall apart and eat a whole pizza and then order some spicy chicken," Katie explained. "And listen, some days we do fall apart. But overall, it's well balanced and we eat healthy."

Katy resident Lisa Carey just bought a full-length mirror. She hasnt used one in years.

Recently, she appreciates her reflection more. Its not just the changes in her own body the weight loss that matters, she explained. Its what she can do without feeling weighed down.

Im doing things now that Id never do before, said Carey, 53.

For example, she recently headed to a Twenty One Pilots concert with her daughter, stood the entire time, danced to the music and posed for photos. Spending more time with her children has been her goal since day one. The whole reason I did this was to be the mom I needed to be, she said.

That required hitting a reset button, Carey said. While a number of people find success in fasting or other weight loss programs, for her the answer came with surgery.

But first, she had to commit to making major changes in her diet.

A lot of people look at surgery and think its an easy way out, Carey said. Theres nothing easy about this.

Careys weight gain had been gradual. She added a few pounds after the birth of her first two children. Then she was diagnosed with traumatic fibromyalgia, deep pain triggered by a car accident.

All of a sudden, this active lifestyle I had wasnt as active as before, she said. And the medications didnt help.

In addition, in vitro fertilization for her third and fourth children also affected her fitness. All you want to do is sleep, she recalled. Youre so tired from the hormones and you just shut down. My active lifestyle was gone.

Carey said she tried everything to lose the weight, but nothing worked.

A year and a half ago, she started researching surgical options. I just decided that Im sick of this, she said. My body was not the person I was inside, and my body was ruling my world.

Carey yearned for the days when she felt like an active mom. As her youngest children entered their teenage years, she wanted to be more involved in their lives.

I was so weighed down with the weight, she said. It was keeping me from what I wanted to do. I wanted to be the mom I was before. I was inside - but I wanted to be that mom outside.

Carey booked a consultation with Dr. Ricardo Bonnor at Texas Surgical Arts, who explained her options. They made a plan for Carey to undergo a gastric sleeve surgery, removing part of her stomach.

Bonnor stressed how active a role Carey would have to assume in the process. He also explained that theres a stigma that persists, associated with the operation. Some patients need help, he said.

Still, its not a quick fix. You have to have the proper mindset, mentality and attitude, Bonnor said. Surgery is just a component.

Carey had to completely change the way she looked at food. Food is fuel, she said. Its not entertainment. And so much of what we do is wrapped around what you eat.

She had to learn to eat on a schedule, watch portion sizes and make time for breakfast.

For the two weeks before surgery, Carey could only eat soft foods. She also eliminated sugar, carbohydrates, alcohol and carbonated beverages completely.

After surgery, she maintained a liquid diet for a week, consuming only three ounces of nourishment at a time.

With time, she was able to add in more food. But even now, she maintains certain dietary restrictions. She counts about 1,500 calories a day and limits her carb intake. She upped the amount of water she drinks and the amount of protein she eats.

Its a total and complete lifestyle change, Carey said. Its all about the foods you eat and when you eat them.

In addition, she tries to increase her exercise. Even when she doesnt have time for a work-out, she makes an effort. For example, shell park her car farther from a destination to increase the walk.

In total, Carey has lost 120 pounds. She also had a tummy tuck to eliminate extra skin.

I didnt go in thinking that this was a magic wand, that my life would be great if only I lost weight, Carey said. I truly started this process, just because I wanted to be the person outside that I was inside. I wanted to be healthier.

Bonnor said that Carey has been an exceptional patient. Shes a great case of someone who made a powerful transformation, both on the inside and outside, he said.

She considers the lifestyle changes a long-term solution. The scale is just a number, she said. What really matters is how you feel when you look at yourself.

Carey has always been a busy person. In addition to being a wife and mother, she runs her own social media management company, New Creative Media, and maintains a blog, Money Saving Parent.

Self-care starts with acknowledging our weaknesses and then tackling them, Carey said. Were a lot stronger than we think we are.

The Biggest Loser exclusive: Kati Morton weighs in on show where extreme weight loss wins – Monsters and Critics

Posted: March 16, 2020 at 3:48 am

The Biggest Loser debuted in 2004, quickly attracting a growing audience with its then-unique premise of defining the winner as the person who shed the most weight.

Set to become stars in their own right, trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels urged the obese contestants to spend their days on the show dieting and exercising to take home the big prize.

However, despite high ratings, The Biggest Loser came under criticism from experts who expressed concern that the rapid weight loss made possible only by devoting days to intense exercise and rigid diets was not realistic.

The criticism grew when, during season 15, ultimate winner Rachel Frederickson began her time on the show at 260 pounds and ended at 105 pounds.

Even the trainers couldnt hide their shock at what turned into a controversy about whether The Biggest Loser had caused Rachel to develop an eating disorder, noted the Today show.

Despite all the controversy of the past, The Biggest Loser returned this year to the small screen. This time around, Bob Harper has taken on the role of host rather than a trainer.

But does the show still have the potential to endanger contestants with its message that you win by losing weight as fast as possible?

Kati Morton, a licensed therapist who is a licensed marriage and family therapist, recently authored, Are u ok?: A Guide to Caring for Your Mental Health.

In an exclusive interview, Kati discussed the pros and cons of The Biggest Loser when it comes to permanent, healthy weight loss.

Reflecting on how The Biggest Loser is based on the concept that youre a winner only if you achieve the most weight loss, Morton acknowledged that there are some positives to the reality TV show.

I think the pros of this concept are that they help people better understand how to feed themselves, and how our emotional eating habits can be, said Kati, who runs a private practice in Santa Monica, California and also has a popular YouTube channel about mental health.

But Morton also sees multiple negative aspects to the premise of The Biggest Loser.

Although the show has offered more support for the emotions involved in weight loss, Kati feels that The Biggest Loser should use the term eating disorder and explore why these contestants struggle so much with overeating.

Moreover, Kati expressed concern that The Biggest Loser limits potential contestants to those who have large amounts of weight to lose.

Because of that restriction, The Biggest Loser puts the focus solely on being thin and using that as the goal, instead of supporting different shapes and sizes.

Viewers of The Biggest Loser have seen how the weight loss competition show takes contestants and puts them in an isolated environment, where they focus only on diet and exercise rather than experience the outside world challenges such as family and career.

That isolated environment results in another concern from Morton.

The [Biggest Loser] is so intensive and isolated it can be hard for people to continue on this healthier path after that get home, pointed out the licensed therapist.

Kati, who specializes in working with individuals experiencing eating disorders and self-harming behaviors as well as all other aspects of mental health, also discussed the distinction between The Biggest Loser campus and the contestants real-world lives.

Does weight loss on the show necessarily translate to continued slim-down success when the contestants return to their everyday lives?

[The show] doesnt take into consideration what our real life is like. In real life we dont have someone making all our meals, telling us what to eat and when to work out. Most of us struggle to fit everything we need to do into our days, and adding in these changes can be hard. Its like when my patients come out of a treatment facility, the slow step down in support and care is pivotal for their long term recovery.

What if you have struggled to lose weight for years, watching the scale go up and down, going on seemingly endless fad diets, and heading to the gym faithfully, but arent obese enough to qualify for the show?

Kati has some tips.

I recommend seeing an eating disorder specialist (this could be a therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist) and making time to see a dietitian, suggested Morton.

Types of therapy that have been shown to be the most successful are CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy).

The specialists you choose depends on your issues, added Kati.

However, if we have other issues like addiction or a traumatic past you will want to seek out a specialist in those areas, explained Morton.

This will help us deal with all of the emotional problems that led to our eating issues while also helping us manage our food choices, portions, etc, with meal plans.

Ultimately, Kati feels that having a professional who specializes in emotional health as well as a specialist who focuses on nutrition can provide well-rounded support and guidance.

The Biggest Loser, which recently shifted from NBC to the USA Network, began its 2020 season with 12 individuals who had battled their weight for years.

The contestant who loses the most weight is the winner of $100,000.

In addition to host Bob Harper, trainers Erica Lugo and Steve Cook work with the contestants to push them to diet and exercise to win the prizes of the most weight loss and the money.

Watch The Biggest Loser on the USA network Tuesday at 9/8c.

Chrissy Metz talks This Is Us weight loss: Does Kates plot depend on stars diet success? – Monsters and Critics

On This Is Us, Chrissy Metz captured viewers from the first time her character Kate stepped on the scale.

Off came not just the clothes but the jewelry too, in a scene that so many dieters know as the hold your breath weigh-in before the diet starts sequence.

Not only has Kate shown viewers every aspect of being overweight, from childhood (played by Mackenzie Hancsicsak) to teen (portrayed by Hannah Zeile) to adult (handled by Metz), but the This Is Us character also has revealed how her weight is tied in with her romantic fate.

And in the latest of those inevitable twists and turns on This Is Us, some think Kates and Tobys future may be linked to his recent weight loss along with her failure to take off the pounds.

But that possibility doesnt answer the big question: Could Chrissys lack of weight loss actually change what the writers have planned for the final shows?

Fan theories have come up with some intriguing possibilities.

Chrissy, who plays the adult Kate on This Is Us, hasnt held back when it comes to her honesty about her weight.

Soon after the show first began, however, Metz sparked controversy when she said in an interview that her This Is Us contract required her to lose weight. The actress subsequently clarified what she had meant in a People interview.

Initially, Chrissy said that she, like Kate, would be on a path to weight loss. She called that plan a conversation she had with producers, adding its in my contract to shed pounds in a healthy manner.

But the controversy over the idea of a contract requiring an actress to shed pounds to hold onto her role resulted in Metz rephrasing her remarks.

It wasnt mandated in the contract, and I probably if I ever said the word contract, I didnt mean it in that way, commented Chrissy. I was pitched that the trajectory of Kate is that shes going to lose weight. That is who and whats going on.

Metz emphasized that she felt positive about the fact that if her character is shown getting slim, she needs to lose weight in real life.

Why not have a motivation beyond me to get to a healthy weight? Chrissy asserted. Every actor does that. Were chameleons. We change, we grow as an actor you lose weight, you gain weight, you change your hair or whatever.

However, she admitted being somewhat surprised by the way that her size has stolen the spotlight.

Its like all people want to talk about is my weight, pointed out Metz. I was like, Okay, this is weird.'

Were all the way into Season 4, and its increasingly starting to look as if Tobys weight loss success and Kates lack thereof could be the straw that broke the This Is Us romances back.

When This Is Us first showed Kate and Tobys meet-cute history, the two first crossed paths in a support group that focused on weight loss. Kate made it clear at the time that she was determined to shed pounds, getting Toby to agree to hop on board the weight loss express with her.

However, that plan changed dramatically from showing Kate as the leader of the diet pack and Toby as her obedient follower.

Instead, following the stressful discovery that the couples son Jack had a disability, Kate returned to relying on food to comfort her. At the same time, Toby discovered CrossFit and lunged his way into the intense workouts, complete with a deep dive into the accompanying diet as well.

And the big question that looms over the show How can This Is Us handle the rumored original plan to show Kate triumphantly losing weight if the actress playing the adult character remains overweight?

Some on Reddit have been blunt about their views concerning Chrissy Metz, with one This Is Us fan asking if Metz was the wrong choice to play Kate.

But one Reddit user came up with a solution for keeping the plot of Kate getting slim the same if Chrissy doesnt lose weight.

If the writers wanted to show Kate has lost weight, and Chrissy is unable to do so in time for the scene, would you accept Hannah [Zeile] being aged up with Chrissys voice? asked the commentator.

The reference to the actress playing the teen comes at the same time as a critical plot point in teen Kates life. The next show will focus on Kate, potentially showing exactly what happened with the boyfriend that resulted in her turning to food so much.

However, the question of whether it would be disrespectful to Chrissy to use a different actress to portray weight loss remains unanswered.

Kate Hudson Says She’s Committing To A Weight-Loss Diet To Lose 10 Pounds In The New Year – Women’s Health

Posted: January 5, 2020 at 12:45 am

Kate Hudson is taking her Instagram followers along for the ride on her New Year's wellness journey. "It's January 2nd, 2020," she said in an Instagram Story posted yesterday. "Got on the scale. I wasn't impressed. But that's okay, 'cause I know how to do this, you know what I mean?"

The Weight Watchers spokesperson then talked about the program's new color-coded plans (she's a purple), before weighing in at 136. "Ideal weight for me: 125," she wrote, "10 to go."

After giving birth to her daughter Rani Rose in 2018, Kate posted on Instagram about her goal to lose 25 pounds by the spring. Unlike with the other two [kids], I didnt really have time to work out, she told Women's Health in our December cover story. It took a different kind of discipline. These days, that discipline manifests in the form of a balanced diet, something she said comes from her partnership with Weight Watchers.

Kate starts her day with celery juice, plus either a protein shake, oatmeal, an acai bowl, or eggs. She likes to keep her meals plant-based, so squash or zucchini noodles are on rotation, which sometimes she spices up with chicken, fish, or steak. (Yesterday, she made shrimp with sherry vinegar and garlic.)

Still, she makes time to work out three or four times a week, alternating between Peloton Tread, pole dancing, Body by Simone, Beachbody Brazil Butt Lift classes, and private Pilates sessions with instructor Nicole Stuart. Pilates is still her favorite, she said: I love how flexible I get and what it does to the shape of my body."

Posted: December 13, 2019 at 6:44 am

KATE Garraway's I'm A Celeb experience has seen her undergo a stunning three-stone weight loss.

The GMB star, 52, gave up sweet treats and dropped two stone before heading to Oz, while a diet of beans, rice and lean meats in the jungle helped her lose another stone.

At the series wrap party, Kate looked dramatically different from pictures taken just months before.

She showed off her new slimmer figure in a glam red playsuit as she reunited with her campmates.

The journalist's campmates were just as impressed, referring to her as a "cougar".

Speaking about her weight loss, Kate told the Mirror: I was a bit shocked when I got into the dressing room and looked in the mirror.

I thought, 'Oh, my God!' because you don't see yourself. There is no mirror in the jungle.

"They weigh you before you go in and they weigh you when you come out and I've lost a stone I was really eating in there as well, so rice and beans is kind of the way to go.

Despite looking amazing before doing the show, Kate admitted she had brought "a lot of swimming costumes"that she feels comfortable wearing in the famous jungle shower.

She told The Sun: "I've got a lot of swimming costumes. It's quite hard as I've got bits of my body that I'm trying to cover up. In fact, a lot of my body I'm trying to cover up. I was looking for one that starts up here and goes down to my ankles.

‘This Is Us’: Fans Are Outraged at How Kate Treats Toby’s Weight Loss, But They Agree On This 1 Thing – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Season 4 ofThis Is Usfinds Toby (Chris Sullivan) and Kate (Chrissy Metz) going through a rough patch. They struggle with all of the typical new parent stressors, as well as their baby having a special need.

Toby and Katedeal with these new intricacies of their marriage in very different ways. Toby found that working out has helped him, but Kate is not happy abouther husbands weight-loss. Lets take a look at what fans are saying about Kates reaction. Warning: Season 4 Spoilers

Two episodes in a row, Kate has reacted poorly to Tobys new fit figure. The first time she sees her husband with his shirt off in a long time, she is mad at him. Kate is overweight, to begin with, and the couple met at a support group for people with eating disorders.

Fans took to Reddit to show their disappointment in Kates reaction. One fan wrote, If I managed to lose some weight and gain some muscle, my wife would congratulate me. Kate? Somehow takes it as an insult that Toby thinks shes fat.

Kate believes Tobys health is a reflection of her. She immediately begins to think that she is not good enough for him. He initially hides his workouts from her, which makes things worse.

Another viewer on Reddit wrote, She cant stand the fact that Toby is taking better care of himself. It begins to make us wonder about her emotional state and how she got to this point.

As fans began discussing Kates anger towards Tobys weight-loss, more profound things came about. Season 4 has shown us that teenage Kate (Hannah Zeile) had a boyfriend during her teenage years who seemed a bit controlling. The show has not yet revealed to us what happened with the relationship, but Reddit users have their theories.

One fan started the theory, I have a feeling we might understand more after we find out what happens with her boyfriend.

Then others agreed, writing, I was looking for this take. The last episode shook me, and I think were about to see what really pushed her over the edge. Ive been thinking for a while that theres more to her problems than blaming herself for Jacks death. If they take this story where I think they are, poor, poor Kate.

Users on Reddit have been hypothesizing that something very traumatic happens with Kate and her teenage boyfriend, Marc (Austin Abrams). Some believe he may have sexually assaulted her, while others think he could have been very controlling.

Fans are all in agreement that Kates emotional reaction to Tobys weight loss stems from the trauma that occurred with her and the mysterious boyfriend during her teenage years.

During the season 3 finale, we saw an older Toby without Kate or a wedding band. Fans began wondering if their relationship lasts through the years.

This past weeks episode indeed shows how much Toby is trying to make things work. He suggests a getaway so they can have some intimate time together. Kate is still reeling from Tobys extreme weight loss and fitness, but Toby reassures her that he still loves her and finds her attractive.

The couple certainly has their challenges, but fans want to believe that they will last in the long run. One fan on Instagram wrote, I absolutely love you and toby together from day one! You guys are amazing!

You can watch Toby and Kates relationship play out every week on This Is Us, Tuesday nights on NBC.
