Weight-Loss Surgery: Carnie Wilson And Other Celebrities Who Had Surgery To Lose Pounds [PHOTOS]

Posted: March 24, 2012 at 7:53 am

Carnie Wilson has resorted to weight-loss surgery another time to shed the pounds.

People.com reported that Wilson went under the knife on Jan. 18 for a lap-band surgery some 12 years after she lost 150 pounds through gastric bypass surgery.

The magazine learned that the 43-year-old singer had a silicone band placed around her stomach and has lost 30 pounds and is still losing more.

"It was the right decision for me and I'm doing really well so far," Wilson told the mag. "It's all about taking good care of myself."

TV Guide reported that Wilson did regain some of the weight from her 1999 gastric bypass surgery. She also appeared on VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club" in 2006 in order to drop a few pounds. She has long struggled to lose post-pregnancy pounds after having daughters, Lola, 6, and Luciana, 2.

Wilson's doctor was the reportedly the one who advised the singer to consider having the gastric band because she regained two-thirds of her weight. Her blood-sugar level was also increasing and she was in danger of developing diabetes, according to TV Guide.

But Wilson isn't the only celebrity who has been under the knife in order to shed some pounds. Others like Sharon Osbourne and Star Jones have used surgery to help their weight loss. Start the slideshow to see some of the celebrities who have undergone weight-loss surgery.

Gastric Bypass Hypnosis: Rethinking Weight Loss?

Posted: March 24, 2012 at 7:53 am

Imagine having the sensation that your stomach is surgically constricted to a fraction of its original size, making your appetite tiny, and your weight loss huge -- no surgery, no magic pills. According to hypnotherapists, you can achieve that for just a fraction of the cost of real bariatric surgery, by undergoing so called gastric bypass hypnosis.

The idea of losing weight through hypnosis has been around for decades, but now some hypnotherapists are offering "gastric bypass hypnosis," also called "lap band hypnosis." This "procedure" is done to "reprogram" the minds of patients to believe their stomachs are actually smaller, making them incapable of eating large meals without feeling uncomfortably full.

Every year, more than 200,000 Americans undergo painful and expensive surgical procedures to have portions of their stomachs removed, repositioned or constricted. These procedures can cost up to $35,000 dollars, but gastric bypass hypnotherapists claim their hypnosis sessions can provide similar weight loss results for a lot less money: about $1,200 dollars.

Watch the full story on "Nightline" tonight at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT

Certified hypnotherapist Rena Greenberg said she has worked with over 100,000 patients in the past 20 years and is adamant that hypnosis helps stop her clients from obsessing over food. Her "virtual" procedure includes three hypnosis sessions, her therapeutic CDs and a weight-loss juice she invented called "Slender Cider."

Fifty-year-old Clarissa DeLong from Orlando, Fla., decided to try Greenberg's procedure after many failed attempts at dieting through much of her adult life. During a hypnotherapy session, Greenberg verbally walked DeLong through the gastric bypass procedure.

"You're aware the incision's being made and you feel sensation, as your liver is being moved over," she told DeLong. "You can feel that it's time to put that band on your belly."

When DeLong met Greenberg, she weighed 340 pounds and said she has had a life-long addiction to sugar. She said the virtual procedure helped re-program her brain to believe that her stomach had shrunken and her appetite for sugar was obliterated. She is hoping this mindset will help her get down to her goal weight of 200 pounds.

"It was almost surreal, that hollowness, and it was almost like dreaming," DeLong said after the session. "It's funny and it's hard to describe."

DeLong said her wake-up call to start losing weight was when six insurance companies turned her down for health care coverage, forcing her to pay a $1,200 premium and accept that she was considered morbidly obese.

Woman loses 160 pounds after wedding

Posted: March 24, 2012 at 7:53 am

Julia Kozerski's photo is called "Vestige" from her series "Half."

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- When Julia Kozerski saw a camera, she would duck and dodge out of the way. She'd hide behind other people or offer to take the picture to avoid being photographed.

"It was an embarrassment, somebody having that photograph," she said, who at her heaviest weighed 338 pounds. "They told the truth. It haunts you."

But when Kozerski got married in 2009, she had to face the camera for obvious reasons, as every bride does.

"I hadn't taken a photo in 10 years," she said.

When she saw her wedding pictures, Kozerski said, "I didn't see that happiness. I saw someone scared of the camera -- that wasn't me."

Her inhibitions about being photographed are upended in her self-portraits chronicling her weight-loss, called "Half."

In a society where perfection and Photoshop are givens, Kozerski disrobes and photographs herself just the way she is -- no makeup, no clothes, no hairstyles, no computer tricks to nip and tuck.

Four fascinating facts about fat

Posted: March 23, 2012 at 5:01 am

Weight loss is always on our minds, especially as we emerge from winter and approach another dreaded swimsuit season. According to a recent national poll from Readers Digest and Yahoo! Health, 40 per cent of U.S. adults are trying to lose weight and 62 per cent have attempted to shed pounds within the past five years.

When youre trying to slim down, its easy to fall into a criticizing rut and blame your body instead of celebrating and enjoying it, flaws and all. Somewhere along the way, the body becomes something to use, mould, shape and fret about; you dont see its underlying perfection, but instead look for whats wrong with it.

So let me shed some light on why we have fat in the first place, why and where we store it, and how we may have gotten too much of it. Its easier to stop hating something once you get to know it a little better.

Our bodies contain two different types of fat: essential fat and non-essential or storage fat. Essential fat is tucked away in our bone marrow, organs, nervous system and muscles. If levels of essential fat get too low, our bodies wont function properly. Thats why its essential.

Nonessential fat, despite its name, is also important: It protects internal organs and converts excess calories to stored energy, creating a safety net for times of deprivation and shortage. But when this fat gets stored in and around our organs as visceral fat, thats where we run into trouble. Deposit too much fat viscerally and you can increase your risk for heart disease, dementia, and even certain kinds of cancers.

My aim is not to scare you, but to let you know that while fat plays many positive roles in our bodies, it can be dangerous. Fat is there for a reason, and you can safely and healthfully get rid of any excess amounts that endanger your health. Here are a few key points I hope will help you put this overly demonized part of the body in perspective.

Fat Fact No. 1: Our bodies need fat to live.

Without fat, our bodies wouldnt function properly. We cant reproduce if body fat falls too low, so basically none of us would be alive today without it. Though our bodies create some fat, certain fats can only be obtained from foods. And having the right balance of these essential fatty acids, is important to heart health, brain development, regulating mood, blood clotting, and controlling inflammation.

Fat Fact No. 2: Fat can make us more attractive.

In our thin-obsessed culture, you might be shocked by this suggestion. But its true, and its important to stop demonizing obesity and excess weight. Fat keeps skin and hair healthy, which enhances appearance, and if you lose too much of it on your face, you can look gaunt.

Carnie Wilson Weight Loss: Singer Has Surgery to Drop 30 Pounds [PHOTOS]

Posted: March 22, 2012 at 8:10 pm

Carnie Wilson is continuing her long struggle with weight loss as the singer recently underwent a second surgery to drop 30 pounds.

Wilson, 43, told People magazine on Wednesday that she went under the knife in January for a lap-band surgery to lose more weight.

"It was the right decision for me and I'm doing really well so far," Wilson told People. "It's all about taking good care of myself."

According to Wilson, since getting the surgery, which required a silicone band placed around the stomach to control appetite, has already dropped 30 pounds.

Wilson has been struggling to lose weight over the years, but eventually lost 150 pounds from her 300-pound figure after having gastric bypass surgery in 1999. Before her first surgery, Wilson said she relied on food for comfort.

"I always think I am one of the the millions and millions of people that struggles with an addiction to food,"she told Fox News. "I don't know how to relax, that's my problem. I can't smoke a joint, I can't have a glass of wine because I want 10 joints and 10 glasses of wine. That's my obsessive compulsive and addictive behavior. I've really struggled since I've become sober. How do I balance that? How can I relax and not overeat?"

However she gained it all back when she had her two daughters, Lola, 6, and Luciana, 2, with husband Rob Bonfiglio, 44.

"Having children derailed me a bit," Wilson told People in 2010. "I'm just frustrated with these pounds."

Carnie Wilson has reunited with Wilson Phillips band members Chynna Phillips and her sister Wendy Wilson to drom a new album," Dedicated," which will debut on April 3 in addition to a television show, "Wilson Phillips: Still Holding On," to premiere on April 8 on the TV Guide Network.

Time to Walk Off the Weight and Forget Your Excuses Ladies

Posted: March 22, 2012 at 8:10 pm

As a woman, I know what it is like to struggle with weight gain and weight loss. Eating healthier and letting go of chocolate is only one part of it. We all know that exercise is a necessary evil when it comes to losing weight and staying healthy. Unfortunately, if you are like me, we also know many different excuses to get out of exercising. For many, it is a busy family schedule and exercise takes away from that. Others just lack motivation or don't want to spend time at the gym.

I have found that walking can be your best form of exercise and it can also be adapted to work around just about every excuse we can come up with.

Takes Away From Family Time

As a working mom of four kids, I am constantly on the go. Whether it is work or helping with homework, my time is usually taken up. I always viewed exercise or going to the gym as something that took away from the little time I had to spend with and enjoy my family. But, this is where walking became a solution. My family found that taking a simple walk around the neighborhood was a great way to exercise as well as spend some quality time with each other.

Simply grab the kids and get walking. You have no distractions like television or video games, so you are able to actually talk and catch up with your children. As you are talking and connecting with your children, you forget that you are actually exercising and before you know it, you have accomplished a great workout.

Walking Partners

Now, if family issues are not your road block to exercise, a lack of motivation may be instead. Maybe you just can't seem to get motivated to go out and walk alone. Maybe safety is an issue.

For these excuses, finding a walking and accountability partner is a great way to go. Together you can motivate each other to get out there and walk. As a team, you are not walking alone so you may feel safer. When you are not up to walking, a simple push from your walking partner may help.

I have had numerous walking partners over the years and it really does help to keep you on track and make your exercise goals. Walking partners can be friends that have the same goal or you can look at joining a walking group in your area.

The "Every Body Walk" campaign is designed to spread the message that walking 30 minutes a day can really make a difference. Their hope is to get Americans up and moving. One feature that is found on their website is a section designed to help you find walking groups in your area. They also provide local walking maps and just about everything to help you get up and get moving.

Coffee: An effective weight loss tool

Posted: March 22, 2012 at 1:29 pm

Can coffee play a role in helping people to lose weight and reduce the risk of adult-onset diabetes? That seems to be the case, according to a number of studies reported in medical journals.

One clinical study published in the scientific French review Phytothrapie demonstrated fat-reducing effects of a green (non-roasted) coffee bean extract. One group of volunteers was given 400 mg of a decaffeinated green coffee extract daily, and the second group received a placebo. After 60 days of supplementation, participants who received the green coffee extract had lost 5.7 percent of their initial weight. By contrast, the group that received a placebo had lost 2.8 percent of their initial weight.

While this study does not show the kind of rapid weight loss touted by many diet fads, it does point to a steady decrease in weight as a result of the use of green coffee extract. Furthermore, since the extract was decaffeinated, the weight loss does not appear to be due to a calorie-burning effect noted with caffeine.

Coffee, one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world, contains a plethora of naturally-occurring compounds, including several classes of antioxidants. Coffee is already known to be a preventive factor against mild depression, Parkinsons disease, and colon and rectal cancers. Now it appears that compounds in coffee also help to regulate blood glucose, reduce fat production, and enable steady weight loss.

The compounds responsible for the weight-controlling effects of coffee are antioxidants known collectively as the chlorogenic acids. These acids appear to slow the production of glucose in the body after a meal, by modifying the activity of certain enzymes in the liver. Additionally, the chlorogenic acids cause a more slow and sustained release of glucose into the body after eating, thereby reducing the production of new fat cells.

This process sheds favorable light on the practice of drinking an espresso after a meal. Espresso, made by steam expressing finely ground coffee, is rich in flavor and aroma and chlorogenic acids, but not very concentrated at all in caffeine. Drinking an espresso after eating causes a suppression of glucose production and release, in addition to causing the body to produce more gastric juices, which aids digestion.

Furthermore, coffee also appears to act as a preventive factor in type 2 diabetes. In one Harvard University in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers found that drinking coffee daily reduces the risk of the disease. In another study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers from Amsterdam concluded that regular coffee consumption is associated with considerably lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. And yet another study conducted in the Netherlands showed a direct connection between coffee consumption and lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

What conclusions can we draw from this work? For a start, coffee with lots of cream and sugar will do little to control weight or prevent diabetes, due to the load of calories in such a beverage. But black coffee, espresso, coffee with a small amount of milk, or a green coffee bean supplement all appear to support weight reduction and lower rates of diabetes. In the studies cited above, decaffeinated coffee and caffeinated coffee alike worked equally well.

Just as it has been discovered over the past few years that coffee provides significant antioxidant protection, it now appears that coffee consumption may play a valuable role in fighting epidemic obesity and high rates of diabetes. These studies suggest that drinking coffee daily and enjoying an espresso after a meal may provide significant benefits to health.

Carnie Has More Weight Surgery

Posted: March 22, 2012 at 1:29 pm

Singer Carnie Wilson has shed 30 lbs from her frame after undergoing weight loss surgery for the second time, according to a report from People magazine.

The singer, who previously lost 150 pounds after gastric bypass surgery in 1999, went under the knife again on January 18. This time, she opted for lap-band surgery, a procedure that involves the placement of a silicone band around the stomach to create a pouch the size of a golf ball.

The 43-year-old told the magazine, it was the right decision for me and Im doing really well so far. Its all about taking good care of myself.

Earlier this year, she told Fox411 that her weight was back up again and that it was a daily struggle for her.

I always think I am one of the the millions and millions of people that struggles with an addiction to food. I dont know how to relax, thats my problem.

Having children derailed me a bit, Wilson, who has two daughters with husband Rob Bonfiglio told People. Im just frustrated with these pounds.

Wilson is reuniting with her band Wilson Philips to promote their new album Dedicated and a new reality show on TV Guide Network.
