CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Weight loss supplements can be found in the health aisles of most grocery and drug stores, but do they really work? According to one recent, diet pills are a waste of money and could be dangerous.

Theyre marketed as being able to boost metabolism, burn fat and blunt appetite.However, there is a lack of strong evidence weight loss pills actually work, say scientists at the University of North Carolina. Perhaps more concerning is that misleading claims have the potential to harm patients, they warn.

The findings may alarm millions of women hoping to get beach body ready for the summer.

Our findings are important for clinicians, researchers and industry alike. They suggest the need for rigorous evaluation of products for weight loss. Only then can we produce data that allows clinicians to provide input and advice with a higher degree of certainty to our patients, says corresponding author John Batsis, a nutritionist at the university, in a statement.

There are hundreds of weight loss supplements in an industry worth billions. They range from cabbage and green tea extract to the shellfish sugar chitosan, guar gum and conjugated linoleic acid. One in three Americans trying to lose weight have used one, researchers note.

The analysis by The Obesity Society (TOS) reviewed hundreds of existing studies. Most showed users failed to shed the pounds. Batsis suggests manufacturers work with academics to design high quality clinical trials.

Patients often struggle to lose or maintain weight because therapies approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) are ineffective. It is also difficult to access healthcare professionals who provide treatments for obesity. The National Institutes of Healths Office of Dietary Supplements now evaluates information and stimulates and supports research.

TOS decided it was important to examine non-FDA therapies to guide its membership by pooling data on 315 randomized controlled trials. Only 52 were found to be at low risk of bias and sufficient to support efficacy. Of these, just 16 demonstrated significant before and after differences compared with dummy pills.

Weight loss ranged widely from 10.5 ounces to nearly 11 pounds, say researchers. TOS Clinical Committee, led by Dr Srividya Kidambi who co-authored the study, recommended doctors consider the findings when advising patients.

Public and private entities should provide adequate resources for obesity management. We call on regulatory authorities to critically examine the dietary supplement industry, including their role in promoting misleading claims and marketing products that have the potential to harm patients, adds Dr Kidambi, of the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The supplements tend to be prescribed by doctors, in combination with diet and exercise, to people who have a significant amount of weight to lose typically a BMI (body mass index) of 27 or higher, but some experts have called for them to be banned.

The study is published inObesity, in the flagship journal of The Obesity Society.

More than 40 percent of Americans have gained weight in the past two years, with the average weight gain for men equaling 37 pounds, according to a2021 survey by the American Psychological Association. Blame the pandemic. With the increase of booze consumption, decrease in sleep, and piled on stress so much stress many of us gained a bit of weight. For those of us who have let a bit become quite a bit, a noticeable amount, a spare tire, or a double digit increase, its time to face the facts: Your life may be on the line. Forget about halcyon dreams of beach bodies, you need to worry about your heart.

Too much weight gain is strongly correlated with higher troponin levels in the blood basically, little pieces of your heart muscle floating around, telling us that damage is being done. Meaning? A six-foot, 225-pound man is 32 percent more likely to develop heart failure than a 6-foot, 188-pound, according to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. No wonder the No. 1 killer of men in the U.S. is heart disease. As such, weight gain, especially for men, is the No. 1 thing health-seekers will want to nip in the bud.

This leads us to some good news: Your pandemic weight gain is different than long-term weight gain. The weight youve gained during the past 18 months or so is more a consequence of circumstances than lifelong habits or metabolic shifts. With the right moves, it will come off faster and is more likely to stay off. You just need a little discipline in diet, effort in exercise, and to prioritize mind over matter. Lets do this.

Weight loss starts with diet. Period, end of story (sorry, fitness nuts!). This means we need to focus on what we eat and when we eat it. Intermittent fasting might sound crazy, but dont get too caught up in the extremes of the trend. Fasting is something we all do and studies show it can be used for good. One study of guys with pre-diabetes found that those who moved their dinner an hour earlier, so they ate all their meals in a six-hour window, had lower blood pressure, better insulin sensitivity, and decreased inflammation in their bodies (and yes, they lost weight). So look to space out your dinner-to-breakfast time and you should see benefits. Sometimes, its not about changing what you eat, but when you eat it.

Skipping a workout now and then is no big deal. But if the kid got sick or your partner is traveling or work is overwhelming or the pandemic is pandemic-ing again, you might have missed more than you were planning. Thats going to happen. But when you do get back into it, dont pick up where you left off or youll get injured, says Shaun Jenkins, senior trainer manager at Tone House in New York City. Scale back to a week in your program that would have been 60 to 65 percent max, he says. If you got up to 100 pounds on a certain machine, swipe back to where you were doing at 60 pounds and use that as your benchmark to restart.

If weight loss is your No. 1 goal, cardio has to be in the mix. Strength training is key for overall fitness, but its the minutes spent with your heart rate elevated at 85 percent max or more that really matter. These 15-minute HIIT sessions can get you there.

Reminder: A diet high in sugar, salt, and saturated fat will undermine a good workout routine any day of the week. This is often a pitfall of anyone who increases their workout intensity or time only to undo it by feeding increased need for calories with, say, fries, burgers, and shakes. And while there are no shortcuts to weight loss, cutting calories is probably necessary. In a review of the activity patterns of more than 1,700 people, scientists found that the energy expenditure from exercise was significantly less than people anticipated, making it harder to drop weight by exercise.

When you drastically cut the number of calories you eat in a day, your body flips out and says, OK, Im going to drastically cut the number of calories I burn in a day, too. Thats because it views this sudden drop in energy as a sign theres a famine on the horizon, and it goes into a mega-energy-saving pattern so it wont run out of fuel. (Picture your smartphone in battery-saving mode.) The better way: Aim to consume 300 to 500 fewer calories each day than usual and burn 300 to 500 more, for a reasonable two pounds of weight loss a week. Slow and steady wins this race.

Fact: You cant lose your gut without also changing your diet, but moves that target all five of your core muscles (thats your rectus abdominis, erector spinae, transverse abdominis, obliques, and multifidi) will improve midsection tone and give you better posture to boot. Start with the following three moves and add to it with more here.

Its fairly obvious what foods you should avoid salt, sugar, saturated fat, yall but what about portions? To figure these out, picture your dinner plate like the face of a clock. From 12 to 3 oclock should be your protein (chicken, fish, beans, or red meat); 3 to 6 oclock is where the rice, potatoes, and pasta go. The other half of your plate (say, 6 to 12 oclock) should be filled with fruits and veggies: salad, broccoli, green beans, an apple, you get the picture.

Tending to your mind is critical to keeping your stress in check, andstress contributes to your expanding waistline in more ways than one. For starters, stress causes your body to release the hormone cortisol. Cortisol increases appetite, and if this is chronic, it will affect your microbiota and change your body into craving more sugar-rich food, says Su-Nui Escobar, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Set aside 10 to 20 minutes each night (or morning) to simply sit and breathe.

Cortisol plays a role in regulating your metabolism, meaning the more of it pumping through your body, the slower your body uses food for fuel. Increased cortisol levels make it very difficult for the body to lose weight and promote belly fat, says Michael Robinson, a naturopathic physician and certified nutrition specialist. Robinson suggests keeping a journal where you can do a brain dump every night before bed writing down the stuff stressing you out and things on tomorrows to-do list, so you can sleep a little better (give or take a crying baby).

Want to get more bang for your buck at the gym? Superset workouts are for people who dont want to sit around at the gym all day, says Jenkins. Im a big proponent of getting the work done and thats one of the points of supersets. Pair one set of exercises with moves that working opposing muscle groups for best results.

Yep, those yellow slivers of sweetness can play a key role in your weight loss journey. Namely, they boost energy levels during exercise just as well as a sports drink, according to recent research. Why does that matter? Because low energy is the No. 1 reason people quit on hard workouts, and hard workouts are essential for shedding unwanted pounds. So eat your bananas.

While all the stats suggest that working from home is contributing to the rising numbers on the scale, you can turn it into a major fitness perk, says Damien Joyner, an ACE-certified personal trainer in San Diego. The only commute when youre working out at home is getting out of bed and walking to the room where you want to exercise, he says. Moreover, you have music that you enjoy, as well as a shower and bathroom steps away from your workout. In other words, no effing excuses. Get after it.

This variation on the traditional move has you parking your feet high up a wall and doing pushups at an incline. The reason you should: Just 11 minutes of bodyweight exercise, three times a week for six weeks, can significantly improve your cardiovascular fitness, according to a study in the International Journal of Exercise Science. Try these other bodyweight moves, too.

To successfully change your eating habits, dont just skip the chips swap them for crunchy fresh carrots and cucumbers instead. The No. 1 mistake resolution-makers make is avoiding their bad habit rather than replacing it with another behavior, research shows.

With the right moves, says Jayson Lee, a personal trainer in New York City, you can burn more calories in 20 minutes than a lot of guys do in a full hour at the gym. What might those moves be? Box jumps, burpees, mountain climbers, and more. Hard, yes. But quick, too.

No, stretching will not directly cause you to lose weight. But a tight body from hunkering down in front of your computer all day is a body prime for injury when you do go to exercise and an injured body is one that wont burn calories the way you need in order to shed the spare tire. 9 Nutritionist-Approved Fruits for Weight Loss Eat This …

Cutting back on Hershey's, Ben & Jerry's, and Oreos may be one of the suckiest parts of dieting. But eliminating sweets doesn't mean you have to go without anything sweet-tasting. Seriously! Just eat fruit, especially picks that have been deemed the best for weight loss.

The natural sugars in fruit can be used to quell a sweet tooth, says registered dietician Bonnie Taub-Dix, RDN, creator of BetterThanDieting, and author of Read It Before You Eat It. "Beyond just being a healthier hit of sweetness, fruits are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, micronutrients, fiber and waterwhich candy and candy-sugar doesn't have," she says.

The fiber in fruit is especially clutch for those working towards weight loss. "Fiber is the nutrient that helps keep you full, so when you eat a fiber-forward diet, you decrease your likelihood of snacking between meals," says Taub-Dix.

Fruit is also lower in calories than other, less healthy foods, she says. Subbing a refined-carb snack with a piece of fruit easily slashes one to two hundred calories from your daily intake.

With that in mind, let us introduce you to the best fruits of blasting flab. The 9 fruits listed below all have two things in common: They are loaded with fiber and flavor.

There's a popular, but misleading, food rumor that eating grapefruit burns more calories than it contains. "It's a myth that grapefruit is a negative calorie food; No food is," says Taub-Dix. "But, high-in-fiber, low-in-calories, and flavorful still makes it a good addition to a weight loss plan," Taub-Dix says.

While she promises there's no wrong time to scarf down the ruby fruit, according to one study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, eating half a grapefruit before meals may be most beneficial for weight and fat loss. For the six-week study, researchers found that participants who ate grapefruit before every meal saw their belly's shrink by up to an inch. Why not consider having half of a grapefruit before your morning oatmeal, and slicing a few segments to a starter salad?

Cherries may taste best on top of an ice cream sundae. But if you're trying to lose weight the oh-so-tiny and sweet fruit is not only pretty damn good on its own, but may also support fat loss. In one 12-week study by the University of Michigan, rats who were fed antioxidant-rich tart cherries showed a 9-percent greater belly fat reduction compared to rats who didn't chow on cherries.

Are humans rats? No. But, the study also found cherry consumption had the profound ability to reduce inflammation, which the researchers noted supports the idea that eating inflammation-fighting foods (like cherries) is beneficial for weight loss. So, nosh on!

Think of apples as the powerhouse weight loss food. "With 4 grams of fiber per serving and only 95 calories, apples are one of the best sources of fiber on the planet," says Taub-Dix. Apples are also exceptionally crunchy, which means they take longer to consume (all that chewing!) and more satisfying to eat compared to other snacks.

If you don't favor one apple type over others, opt for Pink Lady variety. Research conducted at the University of Western Australia found that the Pink Lady apples had the highest levels of flavonoids, antioxidants which are thought to keep the body in tip-top condition. The more you know!

Like apples, pears are full of fiberjust one pear contains about 6 grams. "Every time you eat a pear you're working your way toward your daily recommended fiber intake," says Taub-Dix. (FYI: For women, that's 25 grams a day, and for men, it's 30). Plus, pears contain something called pectin which, she says, "nourishes gut bacteria, improves digestion, supports bowel health, and has been linked to improved weight loss." Not too shabby, eh?

Time to see blueberries as your weight-loss BFF. Generally speaking, berries are packed with something called polyphenols, which are powerful natural chemicals that can help you lose weight and even stop fat from forming. But research on rats from University of Michigan suggests that blueberries have the added benefit of reducing belly fat. In the 90-day study, rats who had blueberry powder mixed into their meals had less abdominal fat at the end of the 90-day study than rats on a berry-free diet.

Taub-Dix suggests replacing snacks like popcorn and M&M's with blueberries, which are similar in shape and (almost) as sweet. "And, you can eat quite a few (18) in a single serving," she says.

Strawberries rank higher on your favorite berry list? That's fine! "Strawberries are full of fiber, water, and nutrients, and research has linked strawberry consumption to improved heart health and improved insulin sensitivity," says Taub-Dix. She recommends nuking them in the microwave and topping with a dollop of Greek Yogurt for dessert, pairing with cottage cheese, or adding them to a salad.

Watermelon sometimes gets a bad rap for being high in sugarafter all, one slice has 18 grams of sugar. But, compared to another summer snack (ahem, like ice cream), watermelon is way more nutritious. Plus, science says it's one of the best fruits for fat and weight loss!

In one study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, researchers fed one group of mice watermelon extract for 12 weeks, and another group of mice none. At the end of the study, those that had been fed watermelon extract, had lost more body weight and fat mass compared to the non-watermelon eating group. While more research on humans is needed to confirm watermelons weight loss benefits, Taub-Dix gives watermelon the green light. "You probably don't want to eat the whole melon, but it's totally fine to eat when you're trying to lose weight."

Peaches make your hands sticky, but they'll help extra weight slide right off. A study at Texas AgriLife Research found that peaches (and plums and nectarines!) may help ward off risk for obesity-related diseases. "[The study] indicates that compounds present in these fruits have anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic properties," Dr. Luis Cisneros-Zevallos, AgriLife Research food scientist explained in a press release. "[Consuming peaches] may reduce the oxidation of bad cholesterol LDL which is associated with cardiovascular disease," he said.

Best part: Fruits with pits are among the lowest in fruit sugar. Meaning, peaches are sweet without being wildly high in sugar. A perk for folks on low-sugar diets and with diabetes.

Soda lovers, it's time to try the water-flavoring trick you've already heard: throw some lemon into your water bottle. "Drinking lemon water in place of fruit juices or soda can absolutely support your weight loss efforts," says Taub-Dix. Every time you have a glass of lemon water instead of a can of Coke or glass of OJ, you save yourself 100 to 200 calories and at least 20 grams of sugar.

Oh, and some people find that sipping on something sour slashes their desire for sweets. How's that for a win-win?
