Pop Weight Loss marked the occasion of opening its new office at 74 New London Turnpike in Glastonbury with a ribbon-cutting on May 3.

Co-owner Kerry Potts said she and her partner have run the Old Saybrook office for three years, and that the company was started about 10 years ago in New Jersey, by ob-gyn Dr. Rebecca Cipriano, who felt that there weren't enough options to help her patients lose weight. The new office has been open about a month.

Potts and co-owner Donna Nucci are both registered nurses and all of the nutritionists have their masters in nutrition. Nutritionist Jennifer Thomas runs the Glastonbury office, along with new nutritionist Evelyn DeDominicis.

"We work one-on-one, in personalized programs using real food, telling you what you should be eating every day, to write everything down, and how much you should exercise. We hold you accountable. It's really working great for most of our clients."

Using food-based plans, the office is able to work with people with a variety of illnesses, including plans for people going through chemotherapy, trying to gain weight, dealing with diabetes, or people who want to lower their cholesterol.

Pop Weight Loss has had an office in Glastonbury for about the last year-and-a-half, but the new location will better accommodate the growing business.

"We finally found a good place to come," Potts said. "It's worked out great. More people can see us. I think location is everything."

Members of the CT River Valley Chamber of Commerce were on hand on May 3 for the ribbon-cutting.

Cipriano has published "POP: Burst the Diet Bubble and Finally Lose Weight," and the Pop Weight Loss offices are nationally franchised.

The program focuses on each person's needs, schedule, starting weight, and goals. Clients generally start by cutting out white flour and sugars, and nutritionists work with their clients' schedules to formulate a successful plan.

"We're really here to help people get healthy, exercise and be disease-free," Potts said. "The program really makes sure you're eating for your health. The industry is huge, in general, because people don't eat the right way, or don't know what to eat. There are a lot of mixed messages. That's why Dr. Cipriano started the program."
