Alice Halse of Sublimity has a succinct message for anyone who has endured frustration along the quest to lose weight:

Dont give up! Its worth the effort, no matter how long it takes.

Halse is literally a poster example of her advice. She and Joe Luper of Molalla were recently crowned by TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), as Oregons 2016 Queen and King, a distinction TOPS bestows to men and women who, "at the end of the year, have officially recorded the largest weight loss from their starting weight, regardless of the time taken to reach their goal," according to a group spokesman Dave Amoroso.

Halses quest has been both enduring and rewarding. She originally joined a TOPS chapter in Reedsport decades ago after becoming concerned about weight gain. She transferred to chapters in Stayton years later, but the journey has not always been a smooth one.

My weight loss went quite well during the first year, then, I started gaining some years, and losing during other years, Halse revealed.

Several years ago she became determined and pragmatic about her weight-loss goals. That determination was rewarded.

In 2013, I decided I needed to get more serious about weight loss and gave myself a deadline of the end of 2016. I reached my goal weight on December 24, 2016, she said.

TOPS officials took notice, hailing Halse for success to the tune of 118 pounds lost, spokeswoman Kelly Michalski noted in an email.Thats the sort of success the nonprofit, which emphasizes overall wellness, group support, health education and recognition among its holistic weight-management components, likes to highlight.

We are so gratified by our TOPS members amazing weight-loss accomplishments, said TOPS President Barbara Cady. Commemorating their life-changing achievements is an essential component of TOPS winning formula, whether losing weight or maintaining goals.

In April the Oregon contingent gathered at Mill Casino in North Bend to celebrate member successes, and to crown Halse and Luper.

Meanwhile, the Sublimity woman said it is important to consistently kindle the message and keep wellness at the forefront.

Its just as hard to stay at goal, as it was to get there, Halsesaid. When you achieve (your goals), you learn how to adhere to the lifestyle changes youve made. Exercise of some form is especially vital to keep your body healthy.

I appreciate all of my TOPS friends who have supported me throughout all the years I have been a member.
