Don’t Follow Pippa Middleton’s ‘Extremely Restrictive’ Wedding Diet – New York Magazine

Pippa Middletons upcoming May 20 wedding to British man James Matthews may be under threat by normal people, but the royal sister-in-law isnt letting that distract her from getting ready for her big day. E! News reports Middleton has been prepping by working out at an exclusive London gym, in addition to following the Sirtfood Diet, which one expert warns is extremely restrictiveand can potentially cause long-term health problems.

On Wednesday, E! News published pictures of Middleton leaving private fitness center KX gym in Chelsea after an hour-and-fifteen-minute Pilates class, accompanied by a report that detailed Middletons use of the Sirtfood Diet, which was created by health consultants Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten. The diet is all about eating foods that are high in polyphenols micronutrients found in plant foods which supposedly help activate a persons sirtuin (or skinny) genes. In other words, the diet claims that by sticking with 20 so-called Sirtfoods including strawberries, kale, arugula, red wine, and walnuts youll burn more fat and your metabolism will speed up.

While that may sound great in theory (especially the part about red wine), registered dietitian Brigitte Zeitlin told the Cut that the diet is actually quite dangerous. Thats because, as Zeitlin explained, the diet is broken down into two phases, as detailed in the creators book, The SirtFood Diet. During a persons first week on the diet, theyre only supposed to consume 1,000 calories a day for three days through three Sirtfood juices and one meal a day (recipes for such meals and juices are included in the book and online). Then, for the remainder of the week, the amount of calories they consume is upped to 1,500 a day, through two juices and two meals.

The second phase of the diet is a maintenance phase that lasts for two weeks, involving three Sirtfood meals and one juice each day. After that, a person can repeat the process all over again (starting from week one), or merely stick with the maintenance phase for however long they want. Zeitlin confirmed that yes, a person would likely lose weight on this diet due to its overly restrictive nature, but theyd also be starving themselves in the process and would merely gain the weight back once they started eating again.

Its unhealthy and unsafe to eat below 1,200 calories a day, Zeitlin told the Cut. In addition to not giving yourself the proper energy and nutrients you need each day youre on this fad diet, eventually youre going to go off of it. Youre going to gain all of the weight you lost back, and more often than not, youre going to gain even more weight back.

Brides who are hoping to get in shape for their big day or even those of us hoping to shed the doughnut weight from our winter hibernation should pursue a healthier option rather than follow Middletons lead, according to the registered dietitian. The best thing a person could do for their health, she said, is to ensure that theyre getting a variety of whole fruits and vegetables, as well as lean protein, each day. This is far healthier than yo-yo dieting, like you would on the Sirtfood diet, she explained, since going up and down in weight has been shown to be bad for your heart, to screw up your metabolism, to cause stress on your body, and to lead to inflammation.

Extreme diets like this dont work, Zeitlin said. Most brides usually burn out on them, and they get incredibly cranky because theyre starving themselves. At a time when youre already incredibly stressed out, the last thing you need to do is add in the stressful factor of not eating properly.

Besides, as Celebitchy points out, the photographs E! News published of Middleton leaving KX gym which, of course, just so happens to have a restaurant that features a Sirtfood Dietfriendly menu seem to be pretty staged, suggesting that perhaps, like most other things celebrity-related, Middletons wedding prep might just be spon-con.

Dr. Zorba Paster: Talk about diet, exercise and screen time – Madison.com

Posted: April 28, 2017 at 10:42 pm

Kids are spending more and more time watching more and more screens. If you havent noticed it, you must be Rip Van Winkle.

I used to harp against TV time, but gone are the days of just three network stations plus PBS. Now there are screens everywhere and I mean everywhere.

How many times have you almost bumped into someone walking down the street looking at the screen on their dumb phone? And look at restaurants, where mom and dad are sitting with their kids and no one is talking to one another. Theyre all in their own cocoon, looking at their screens. A recent ad for AT&T showed a father and 5-year-old son sitting on the step each with a phone or tablet. Not talking. Not interacting. Just looking and texting. Uh huh. Thats not what I would call good parenting at all. Yes, the times they are a-changin and not all for the better.

Learning to use technology appropriately is why two studies from the British Medical Journal caught my interest. That time your child is spending in front of the screen just might be responsible for the diabetes and obesity epidemic we see nationwide affecting our kids. Thats right screen time might be fat time.

Before you say hold your horses, lets look at the data. The study came out of England and, granted, British kids are not the same as U.S. kids. But I think you could comfortably say the differences are minor when you look at the results the study showed.

They looked at nearly 5,000 children, boys and girls, in more than 200 schools, checking to see how much time they spent in front of a screen. Diaries from the kids and the parents were a pretty good representation of what was going on in each house. They wanted to compare the kids who clocked in little or no time screen time, meaning an hour or less per day, with kids who clocked in three hours or more per day.

Then they took blood tests, measuring insulin resistance, blood sugar, cholesterol and inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein, which has been implicated in heart attacks. And, of course, they measured the kids height and weight as well as skin-fold thickness, a fairly reliable measure of how much fat you have when youre a child.

The results may not surprise you, but they certainly did me. Children who spent more time in front of a screen were more likely have worse scores in nearly all of these measures, potentially putting them at risk for developing diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease when they become adults. Not only that, but the kids with more screen time showed elevated levels of leptin, a hormone that has been implicated in overweight people.

You might wonder what role family income, parents education, whether there were smokers in the house and other factors might play in this. The answer was nada, none at all.

My spin: Screen time is diabetes and obesity time. We talk about diet and exercise, diet and exercise; we dont talk about screen time, diet and exercise. Perhaps we should.

And perhaps what might be true for children also might be true for adults. I dont ask my patients to clock in how much time they spend in front of a screen every day. Perhaps that should be a question that all clinicians should ask whats good for the gosling is good for the gander.

Next week, Ill tell you about a disappointing study regarding childhood exercise. Stay well.

Three lane road diet back on the table for Avondale Estates’ U.S. 278 – Atlanta Journal Constitution

Posted: April 28, 2017 at 10:42 pm

The states Department of Transportation has told Avondale Estates that its eligible for a road diet along U.S. 278 between Ashton Place and Sams Crossing.

This would mean cutting the current five lanes down to three (removing one east and one west bound lane) and having bike lanes in each direction. It would also mean wider sidewalks and more effective pedestrian crossings (with hawk lights), consistent with the citys goal of connecting its commercial district with residential.

GDOT had previously rejected an identical plan in December 2015, saying it would slow traffic along a critical state corridor. In March 2016 the city devised a compromise plan with four lanes, but in December asked GDOT to re-examine the three-lane scenario.

From what I understand they went back and looked at the traffic studies, said City Manager Clai Brown. I think their [agreeing to three lanes] was based entirely on that.

The tentative price for the four-lane project was $2.8 million, but the three-lane version is more intense, Brown said, and will likely cost more. Eighty percent will come from an Atlanta Regional Commission grant, and 20 percent from the city.

Brown said the project unfolds in three stages, planning and engineering, right of way acquisition and construction. Tentative finish is the middle of 2021.

6 Ways to Alter Your Diet as You Age – Care2.com

Posted: April 28, 2017 at 10:42 pm

Are you eating the same foods you were eating in your 20s and 30s? Well, sticking to your old ways can cost you. As you may know, the body experiences rapid changes after age 50. Its ability to absorb nutrients fades, metabolism slows down, bone density declines and immune function weakens.

To combat these changes and maintain optimal health, you have to change your diet. Here are diet changes that will keep you healthy at age 50 and beyond.

Vitamin B12 deficiency has been linked to anemia, digestive issues and fatigue. And its estimated that 47 million Americans are vitamin B12 deficient. In fact, 80 percent of vegans and 50 percent of vegetarians are deficient in B12.

You have greater risk of vitamin B12 deficiency after 50 since your body doesnt have enough stomach acid to breakdown B12 from food. To make up for low vitamin B12 absorption, increase your intake of beef, fish, eggs, and milk. If you are vegan consume; fortified plant milks, fortified soy products, and vegan B12 supplements.

Unlike other nutrients which can be harmful when you go overboard, vitamin B12 is totally safe. According to Washington Post, this vitamin is water soluble, which means the body will flush excess amounts.

According to research, bone loss triples in women after menopause. Increasing calcium intake will help keep the bones healthy and prevent fractures.

Calcium is also essential for muscle contractions and balancing pH levels (reducing acidity) in the body. The daily recommended calcium intake for women over 51 is 1200mg and 1000mg for men.

Here are the best vegan sources for calcium. Note that excess calcium intake can cause kidney stones, digestive problems and heart disease.

High fiber foods have been proven to reduce risk of colon cancer, heart disease, diabetes, constipation and promote weight loss. Unfortunately, most women dont consume the recommended 25g per day (30g per day day for men).

If you want to prevent your waistline from expanding, increase fiber intake and steer clear of processed carbs.

Vitamin D also helps prevent bone loss. Youll even be surprised to find out that adequate intake of vitamin D can lower mortality rate, research shows.

Its harder to get enough vitamin D as we age because our bodies absorb fewer nutrients from food sources. Plus the skin cant change sunlight to vitamin D as efficiently as it used to when you were younger.

Get vitamin D from food sources such as whole eggs, salmon, mushrooms and fortified foods. In fact, you may need to supplement to reach the recommended daily dose.

The recommended daily intake of magnesium is 400mg. People who dont reach this daily value have higher risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, fatigue and weak immune system.

If you choose to use supplements, make sure they dont exceed 400mg. Here are foods that fix magnesium deficiency.

Omega 3s can help you stay young. They fight inflammation, which is known to increase risk of diseases and promote aging. Fish is the most popular source of omega 3s. Vegans can get this fatty acid from flaxseeds and almonds. Feel free to take supplements. Aim for 1000mg per day.

‘Diet’ products can make you fat, study shows – Science Daily

Posted: April 27, 2017 at 6:45 pm

High-fat foods are often the primary target when fighting obesity, but sugar-laden "diet" foods could be contributing to unwanted weight gain as well, according to a new study from the University of Georgia.

Researchers found that rats fed a diet high in sugar but low in fat -- meant to imitate many popular diet foods -- increased body fat mass when compared to rats fed a balanced rodent diet. The high-sugar diet induced a host of other problems, including liver damage and brain inflammation.

"Most so-called diet products containing low or no fat have an increased amount of sugar and are camouflaged under fancy names, giving the impression that they are healthy, but the reality is that those foods may damage the liver and lead to obesity as well," said the study's principal investigator, Krzysztof Czaja, an associate professor of veterinary biosciences and diagnostic imaging in UGA's College of Veterinary Medicine.

"What's really troubling in our findings is that the rats consuming high-sugar, low-fat diets didn't consume significantly more calories than the rats fed a balanced diet," Czaja said. "Our research shows that in rats fed a low-fat, high-sugar diet, the efficiency of generating body fat is more than twice as high -- in other words, rats consuming low-fat high-sugar diets need less than half the number of calories to generate the same amount of body fat."

Over a four-week period, researchers monitored body weight, caloric intake, body composition and fecal samples in three groups of rats. One group of test subjects consumed a diet high in fat and sugar, another group was fed a low-fat, high-sugar diet and a third group was given a balanced or "normal" diet.

Both the low-fat, high-sugar and high-fat, high-sugar groups displayed an increase in liver fat and significant increases in body weight and body fat when compared to the balanced diet group. Liver fat accumulation was significant in the high-sugar, low-fat group, which Czaja said "is a very dangerous situation, because the liver accumulating more fat mimics the effect of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease."

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is caused by fat buildup in the liver, and serious forms of the disease can result in liver damage comparable to that caused by heavy alcohol use.

The unbalanced diets also induced chronic inflammation in the intestinal tract and brain. Former studies in rats conducted by Czaja have shown that brain inflammation alters gut-brain communication by damaging the vagus nerve, which controls sensory signals, including the brain's ability to determine when one is full.

"The brain changes resulting from these unbalanced diets seem to be long term, and it is still not known if they are reversible by balanced diets," Czaja said.

This study expands upon the researchers' previous work that determined high-fat diets alter the gut microbiome, the collection of bacteria, viruses and other microbes that live in the digestive tract. The recent study found that the unbalanced diets decreased the microbiome's bacterial diversity, and the low-fat, high-sugar diet increased gut bacteria that are associated with liver damage.

Foods With Soy Protein May Help Treat Symptoms Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome – Medical Daily

Posted: April 27, 2017 at 6:45 pm

Theres been a lot of debate over the benefits of eating soy. Some think its a heart-healthy source of protein while others worry it may increase cancer risk. A new studyshows that those who have Irritable Bowel Syndrome could find relief from eating soy.

Read:What Is Leaky Gut Syndrome? The Truth On This Condition And How To Fix It

Researchers at Penn State University performed the study on mice, who were made to have a condition similar to ulcerative colitis. They discovered that issues like weight loss and swelling of the spleen werereduced when soy protein concentrate was substituted for about 12 percent of other protein sources.

While many worry about soy's safety, new study suggests it could help with IBS. Pixabay

We didnt want to get carried away with using doses that were really high and would crowd out all the other protein that was there, said Zachary Bitzer, a former graduate student in the food science program and study co-author, in a statement. Instead, we wanted to find a scenario that was going to fit into a more human-relevant situation.

While the study was only done in mice, the team believes this could be easily translatable toadults as soy protein concentrate is a very common ingredient. However, they are not yet sure whether its the actual soy protein that appears to reduce IBS symptoms as the concentrate also includes soybean fiber. The scientists will soon start a new study to determine which component accounts for the changes.

Soy has often gotten a bad reputation for increasingcancer risk in women. Its natural isoflavones actsimilarly to estrogen, which some worry could increase the risk of breast cancer. The MD Anderson Cancer Center says that soy products can be consumed safely.

The current research does not support avoiding whole soy foods, even for cancer patients or survivors, said Clare McKindley, clinical dietitian in MD Andersons Cancer Prevention Center, in a blog post.

Soy contains all the essential amino acids that play a role in supporting the bodys vital functions, said McKindley. It can be an easy way for people on a vegan or vegetarian diet and those with food allergies to get those required amino acids. But, as with any food, eating in moderation is recommended.

Previous research shows that isoflavones might actually be good for you. Theyve been linked to reducing heart diseases, osteoporosis, and cognitive decline associated with aging, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Like anything, soy can be a part of a healthy diet when eaten in moderation. Just be sure to opt for minimally processed foods to maximize its health benefits and lower any associated risks.

Soak up the sun safely: sunscreen tips – El Paso Inc.

Posted: April 27, 2017 at 6:45 pm

Summer is just around the corner, and for many families, that means barbecues, splashing in the pool and other activities that generally involve basking in the sun.

Unfortunately, sun safety is probably the last thing on childrens minds as theyre outside enjoying the warm weather and the results of that could be dangerous. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. One in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime.

Dr. Brenda Simpson, dermatologist at El Paso Dermatology Center, emphasized that it is imperative that parents teach their children the basics of sun safety.

Sun exposure is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancers, including melanoma, she said. To protect your skin, it is important to seek shade remembering that the suns rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wear sun-protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeve shirts, rash guards or wet suits, sun glasses and apply sunscreen.

UV rays explained

Simpson said that sunlight contains two types of harmful ultraviolet rays that reach the earth: UVA and UVB, both of which can lead to skin cancer.

In addition, UVA rays can prematurely age skin, causing wrinkling and age spots and can pass through window glass, she said. UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and are blocked by window glass. The sun emits harmful UV rays year-round.

Dont think you need to apply sunscreen when its cloudy outside? Think again; even on those days, up to 80 percent of the suns rays can pass through the clouds.

The 411 on SPF

The sunscreen aisle features dozens upon dozens of different choices, so how should you know which is the best one?

Start by selecting an appropriate SPF sun protection factor, or as Simpson refers to it, sunburn protection factor.

A confusing thing about SPF is the number that follows it. This number tells you how much UVB light (the burning rays) a sunscreen can filter out. SPF 15 filters 93 percent of the suns UVB rays, SPF 30 filters 97 percent and SPF 50 filters 98 percent.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. No sunscreen can filter out 100 percent of the suns UVB rays. Thats why its important to also wear protective clothing and seek shade.

Broad-spectrum sunscreens provide protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

Sunscreens that contain the ingredients zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are recommended because they are physical blockers, meaning that they are stable molecules that literally block the suns rays, Simpson said.

There is some speculation that storing sunscreen in a hot vehicle will reduce its SPF.

Chemical blockers react when exposed to light and are also able to protect your skin by absorbing UV rays. Physical blocking sunscreens do not degrade in heat. However, high temperatures may cause the ultraviolet absorbing chemicals like avobenzone and oxybenzone to degrade in the bottle.

Protect yourself and your family

By now, many of us know to avoid tanning beds, as they can cause skin cancer and wrinkles. Teach children to use sunscreen even as theyre staying active.

Use extra caution near water, snow, and sand as they reflect damaging rays of sun, which can increase your chance of sunburn, Simpson added. If you want to look tan, consider using a self-tanning product, but continue to use sunscreen with it.

Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming or sweating heavily.

Remind your kids that the sun isnt completely bad. It is, after all, a source of vitamin D. Just keep in mind that we should not rely on the sun as our only source for vitamin D. That should also come from a healthy diet that includes foods rich in vitamin D or supplements.

It is important to teach children how to protect their skin, Simpson said. This is a learned skill that needs to be taught by parents, educators and doctors.

Doug Clark: The Monroe Street ‘Road Diet’ will starve businesses – The Spokesman-Review

Posted: April 27, 2017 at 6:44 pm

Thu., April 27, 2017, 6 a.m.

Buoyed by last summers success at nearly destroying downtown shopping through the random digging of giant holes in the pavement, the Spokane City Clowncil is now looking to see if they can wreck the commerce on Monroe Street, too.

The plan, it has been widely reported, is to put a mile-long stretch of North Monroe on what public works officials call a strict Road Diet.

This is not to be confused with the strict Atkins Diet that I went on back in 1990s.

For a while, it actually worked. I dropped down to almost the weight I carried in high school by following Dr. Atkins orders to eat nothing but beef jerky, steak, raw hamburger and several of the meatier varieties of insects.

Follow my diet and youll live forever, advised Dr. Atkins to his fans shortly before he dropped dead.

The problem with the Atkins all-protein protocol came when I was about two months into it. I suddenly started jonesing like an opioid addict for what food scientists call carbohydrates.

Or, in laymans terms: Everything that tastes good.

So in a moment of shaky weakness, I strayed off my Atkins regimen and consumed 512 Hostess Twinkies in about 15 minutes.

I felt positively giddy. Until next morning, that is, when I awoke to find that I had ballooned to the approximate size of a Macys parade float.

Thats the trouble with these popular exotic diets, theres always a dark and sinister cost.

The Spokane Road Diet does not involve food, of course.

Well, unless you count all the meals that the taxpayers probably picked up while lawmakers, experts and other nimrods were mulling it over.

Rather, the Road Diet is a sophisticated construction process whereby the city can receive millions in grant dollars from the Karl Marx Institute by promising to squeeze the life out of a capitalist-filled thoroughfare.

The Road Diet will entail many of the same elements that are common to all Spokane street projects: Endless digging, hundreds of orange cones, flashing lights, detours, huge languishing semi-rusted pieces of heavy equipment, night-and-day jackhammering, scoop shoveling and an encampment of 1,200 bright-vested, steely eyed, armed flaggers who have been ordered to shoot to kill.

How long, some of you taxpayers might wonder, will the North Monroe Road Diet take to complete?

Hoping to begin the project next year, city officials have carefully calculated that

With normal stalls, delays, excuses, denials, accusations, screw-ups, lawsuits, firings and reprisals, the North Monroe Road Diet should be concluded sometime way, way, way into the future.

But dont hold us to that.

In the end, however, it will all be worth it! Spokanes once-fatty pants North Monroe will have been successfully squeezed into a Size 1 glamour mag-worthy goat path.

North Monroe Lite, as it will be known, will be transformed into a destination dotted with clog repair shops, medical marijuana outlets, espresso bars with clever names like Bean Me Up, Scotty, and flocks of socially conscious millennial hipsters shopping for organic kale.

Spokane can then cash in on the nations obsession with weight by publishing our own Road Diet book for other morbidly obese communities to follow.

Already, however, some of the more selfish merchants are crying foul. They recall previous roadwork nightmares, like when the city took 17 years to upgrade the Monroe Street Bridge and reduced commerce north of the bridge to one guy selling corn dogs from a cart.

Monroe, they argue, is a vital conduit for drivers going from downtown north to Francis and back again. Squeezing it anywhere would make as much sense as choking off a wild raging river.

These merchants fear that the snarl and slowdowns of construction will scare away business and starve their enterprises right into the ground.

To which the city has responded with, Yeah. Whats your point?

And the beat goes on in the Lilac City.
