Non-nutritional management of controlled energy dry cow diets: Another piece to a very complex puzzle – Progressive Dairy

Posted: July 24, 2022 at 2:03 am

The weeks leading up to calving and the weeks following calving can be extremely challenging for dairy cows. One of the most obvious stressors during this time is the shift from gestation to lactation and the sudden and dramatic nutrient demand for milk production that accompanies this shift.

Over the past several decades, researchers have identified pre-calving dietary strategies to promote post-calving success, such as negative DCAD diets and controlled energy dry cow diets. Despite these diets working well from a physiological standpoint, how cows consume these diets and how these diets are managed play a critical role in their success. In the past several years, research has highlighted that non-nutritional dietary management is equally important as the diet itself in terms of maximizing success during the post-calving period. Below are four tips to consider when it comes to non-nutritional management of controlled energy dry cow diets.

Controlled energy dry cow diets typically contain 5 to 10 pounds of wheat straw or mature grass hay in attempt to limit energy consumption to about 100% of requirements while also allowing the cow to consume as much feed as she would like. One of the biggest challenges with feeding these diets is: Unfortunately, straw isnt high on the list of the cows most-sought-after feed ingredients. This introduces the risk of feed sorting, which consequently introduces the risk of cows consuming an imbalanced diet and defeating the purpose of these diets.

Additionally, straw can actually limit intake due to gut fill when not chopped finely. Research from the University of Guelph concluded that when straw was chopped to 1 inch (versus 4 inches), cows not only had higher intakes across the entire dry period, but interestingly they did not have as steep of a drop in intake in the week leading up to calving. Cows sorted against the long forage particles regardless of straw chop length; however, cows fed the 1-inch chopped straw sorted to a lesser extent than cows fed the 4-inch straw. The positive effect of the shorter chopped straw even carried on post-calving when cows were all fed the same lactating diet. Cows that were previously fed the 1-inch chopped straw tended to have lower blood ketone levels three weeks after calving compared to the cows fed the 4-inch straw.

Another area that deserves attention when feeding high-straw diets is consistency across the feedbunk. Preliminary research that was conducted on 10 northern New York herds in 2021 highlighted some interesting results related to particle distribution and the co-efficient of variation (CV) on the top screen of the Penn State Particle Separator (PSPS) when cows were fed high-straw, negative DCAD dry cow diets. In this research, we analyzed particle distribution at three locations across the bunk (both sides and the middle), and we found that as the CV on the top screen of the PSPS across the three samples increased, so did the cows risk of challenges post-calving (Figure 1).

We measured this through a liver health index (LHI) that incorporates liver biomarkers and assigns each cow a value higher values mean better liver health, and lower values mean poorer liver health. In a previous study, Cornell researchers found that cows with lower LHI had poorer health, milk production and reproductive success compared to cows with higher LHI. The data from this preliminary project, combined with earlier data, highlight an opportunity to better understand the importance of adequate mixing and consistent delivery when feeding these high-straw dry cow diets. To our knowledge, there is no recommended CV for these types of diets. However, our preliminary data suggests a CV under 10% on the top screen across the feedbunk may be a reasonable target. Factors that could impact the CV include proper mixing time, machinery maintenance and mixing order, to name a few.

This next tip goes hand-in-hand with the previous two. Monitoring sorting using the PSPS is a great check and balance for any diet on the farm but especially for these high-straw dry cow diets that are prone to sorting. Typically, cows will sort in favor of the fine grain components that are found on the bottom screen and the pan (if using the four-tier shaker box), and they will sort against the long forage particles found on the top screen. This behavior increases when the diet fed is physically easier to sort (i.e., particle length is long and cows can easily use their muzzle to sift and sort through the diet). This behavior is problematic with any diet fed because it alters the composition of what remains in the feedbunk for cows that will eat later in the day. A big risk with sorting negative DCAD diets is that some cows may be at risk of not consuming the balanced diet that was formulated for them, thereby increasing the risk of calcium challenges at freshening.

Additionally, when cows sort, they spend more time feeding but do not necessarily have higher intake. Previous research has nicely outlined the importance of pre-calving intake and the risks associated with lower intake in the weeks leading up to calving, so providing a diet and an environment that promotes consistent consumption of the diet is very important. Individual herds can monitor sorting by using the PSPS to analyze fresh feed and refusal feed (approximately 24 hours later). Then, compare the difference in particle distribution between the two points to get a sense of how cows are consuming the diet fed. Most commonly, well see a higher percentage of particles on the top screen and a lower percentage of particles on the bottom screen and in the pan after 24 hours. Some degree of sorting is to be expected, but this exercise can help farms identify if sorting is contributing to transition health issues.

Lastly, it goes without saying that how the feedbunk is managed plays a big role on transition cow success. Previous research concluded that competition at the feedbunk increased displacements and tended to decrease intake in the week before calving. Additionally, those cows that were fed in a competitive setting had a faster feeding rate. Ensure sufficient feeding space (30 to 32 inches per cow), especially in the close-up pen, to promote healthy and consistent feeding behaviors. Feed availability is also an important factor to consider.

Although less researched for dry cows, making sure feed is always available and is frequently pushed up to cows will help promote desirable feeding behaviors and will help drive intake. After all, intake is a function of feeding behavior, so promoting healthy feeding behaviors will help to drive intake in the pre-calving period.

Despite decades of supporting research for controlled energy negative DCAD diets, the nutritional part is only one side of the story. How these diets are managed from a non-nutritional standpoint is equally important in terms of stimulating intake pre-calving and promoting a successful transition to lactation. Chopping straw finely, monitoring sorting, ensuring consistent feed delivery across the bunk and promoting a desirable feeding environment are simple strategies to improve success when feeding these diets.

Ultra-processed foods make up almost two-thirds of Britain’s school meals – EurekAlert

Posted: July 24, 2022 at 2:03 am

School meals in the UK contain lots of highly processed foods, promoting poor health among children and increasing their risk of obesity.British primary and secondary schoolchildren are getting the majority of their lunchtime calories from ultra-processed foods, according to a study led by researchers at Imperial College London and published today in the journal Nutrients. The analysis, which looked at the content of school lunches of more than 3,000 children between 2008-2017, finds that 64% of the calories in meals provided by the school come from ultra-processed foods, contributing to the consumption of high levels of processed foods and increasing the risk of childhood obesity. Ultra-processed bread, snacks, puddings and sugary drinks were among the biggest contributors, and on the whole packed lunches contained more calories from highly processed foods, compared to school meals.According to the researchers, publicly funded school meals (i.e. free school meals and those that children buy in school) are a vital mechanism to deliver healthy food to children, especially those from families with low incomes. They explain the findings highlight a key opportunity for policy makers and educators to level the playing field by improving the nutritional quality of school lunches. They argue that urgent policy changes are needed to cap the amount processed foods school lunches contain and to increase access to free school meals, which could help to boost the diets and health of Britains children.Dr Jennie Parnham, from the School of Public Health at Imperial College London and first author on the paper, said: This is the first study to look at the extent of ultra-processed food content in school lunches for children of all ages. We need to view these findings as a call to action to invest in policies that can promote healthy eating. Owing to the current cost of living crisis, school meals should be a way for all children to access a low-cost nutritious meal. Yet, our research suggests this is not currently the case. She continued: Ultra-processed foods are often cheap, readily available, and heavily marketed often as healthy options. But these foods are also generally higher in salt, fat, sugar, and other additives, and linked with a range of poor health outcomes, so its important that people are aware of the health risks of children consuming them in high levels at school. As food prices continue to rise in the UK and globally, accessing affordable, healthy food will become more challenging for many more people. School meals should offer children from all backgrounds access to a healthy and minimally processed meal, yet they are currently failing to meet their potential.Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are items which are heavily processed during their making: such as frozen pizzas, fizzy or milk-based drinks, mass-produced packaged bread and many ready meals.[1] Previous research has linked regular consumption of them with obesity and increased long-term risk of health conditions like Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.Previous research by the team reported the scale of UPFs being consumed by children in the UK, which is the highest in Europe. The work also highlighted that eating patterns established in childhood extend into adulthood, potentially setting children on a lifelong trajectory for obesity and a range of negative physical and mental health outcomes. In the latest study, the team looked at the diets of more than 3,300 children in primary and secondary school, collected through the National Diet and Nutrition survey [2]. The aim was to examine the proportion of UPFs in packed lunches (food brought from home) and school meals (which includes lunches provided by the school (free school meals) or bought by students at the school canteen). The analysis included data from 1,895 primary school children (aged 4-11) and 1,408 secondary school children (aged 11-18), looking at food groups making up the total calorie count, as well as the proportion of total food intake of the meal (in grams).Overall, around 75% of calories across all types of school lunches came from UPFs with 82% of calories from UPFs in packed lunches, compared with 64% in school meals across all ages. However, within school meals the study found that secondary schoolchildren had higher levels of UPFs (70% of calories) compared to primary schoolchildren (61% of calories). Secondary school meals contained a higher proportion of calories from fast food items, puddings and desserts. In general, children from lower-income backgrounds were more likely to have higher levels of UPF on their plates (77% of calories) than children from higher-income backgrounds (71% of calories). In primary school, almost half of the calories in packed lunches came from ultra-processed bread and snacks, compared to just 13% of calories of school meals. Packed lunches also tended to have fewer calories from minimally processed fruit and veg, meat and dairy, and starch (such as pasta or potatoes), compared to school meals. One of the largest UPF contributors, as a proportion of grams of food intake, came from ultra-processed drinks such as fizzy drinks, fruit juice, or yogurt drinks. According to the team, one of the easiest and most cost-effective opportunities to improve the nutritional value of school lunches would be to swap these high calorie, ultra-processed drinks for water. While the work is the first to bring together both primary and secondary school settings, the researchers highlight the limitation that secondary schoolchildren self-reported their dietary data while primary schoolchildren did not, but this mostly likely means that the scale of UPFs being consumed by secondary schoolchildren is under-estimated.Dr Eszter Vamos, from Imperials School of Public Health, added: With the rising cost of living, many families are struggling to access healthy foods, and school meals might be the only opportunity for many children to have a healthy regular main meal. School meals are critically important in making sure that every child has access to an affordable nutritious meal.Children in England consume very high levels of ultra-processed foods, and it is worrying that meals consumed at school contribute to this. Our findings call for urgent policy changes to improve the accessibility and quality of school meals as this could shape childrens overall diets considerably with important consequences for their current and future health. This study is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), through the NIHR School for Public Health Research.-The ultra-processed food content of school meals and packed lunches in the United Kingdom by Jennie Parnham is published in Nutrients. For more information, please contact:Emily HeadMedia Manager (Medicine)Imperial College LondonT: +44 (0) 20 7594 6900E: e.head21@imperial.ac.ukOut of hours: +44 (0) 7803 886 248.NOTES TO EDITORS:This press release uses a labelling system developed by the Academy of Medical Sciences to improve the communication of evidence. They are heavily marketed and created to displace all other foods and dishes.Examples include soft drinks, mass-produced packaged bread, flavoured yoghurts, most breakfast cereals, confectionery, packaged sweet and savoury snacks, chicken and fish nuggets, and many ready meals.Ultra-processed foods can be identified from the following characteristics: A long list of ingredients; Ingredients that you dont recognise or wouldnt use at home, such as additives; High fat, sugar and salt content; Long shelf life.Details of the NOVA classification of food types can be found online:https://www.fao.org/3/ca5644en/ca5644en.pdfFull details can also be found in the groups previous work:https://www.imperial.ac.uk/news/223573/urgent-action-needed-reduce-harm-ultra-processed/%5B2%5D The study used nationally representative data from the UKs National Diet and Nutrition Survey (2008-2017).https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-diet-and-nutrition-surveyAbout Imperial College London

Avoiding Burnout: 8 Tips to Function at Your Best – Healthline

Posted: July 24, 2022 at 2:03 am

In an ever-connected world, it can be challenging to take a break for self-care, even when you need it.

If youre experiencing burnout, you may feel drained both physically and emotionally, making it challenging to give your all when performing daily activities.

Weve partnered with Integrative Therapeutics, a manufacturer of science-based supplements designed to help achieve optimal health and previously available only through healthcare professionals, to bring you tips for confronting burnout and getting back to functioning at your best.

Knowing what tools and habits work for you when dealing with stress can help you prioritize your well-being and prevent burnout.

Coping strategies can be direct and action-focused or indirect and emotion-centered.

Taking an action-focused approach means you confront the cause of stress by making actionable changes, such as:

An emotion-centered approach focuses on managing your emotional response to stress. Some ways to do this may include:

Integrative Therapeutics Cortisol Manager is designed to promote relaxation and calm to support restful sleep.*

*This statement has not been evaluated by the Food & Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Findings from a 2021 study of 650 Finnish women suggest that eating a well-balanced diet is associated with lower burnout symptoms.

A healthy diet can help support your immune system and may have protective effects against depression and chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

To boost your nutrient intake, try eating whole foods like:

And keep processed foods, sugars, and saturated fats to a minimum.

Have you ever been particularly moody after a bad nights sleep? Or experienced trouble focusing at work because you stayed up all night watching an exciting new show? When you dont sleep well or enough, lifes daily activities can seem overwhelming and exhausting.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), adults over age 18 should get at least 7 hours of sleep per night.

Research from 2021 also finds that quality sleep is associated with an improvement in mental well-being. On the other hand, poor quality sleep, shorter sleep times, and insomnia are linked to higher rates of burnout.

Getting enough quality sleep is crucial to both your physical and psychological health. Lack of sleep can lead to consequences such as:

Whether its setting boundaries at work, in your social life, or with family, knowing your limits can help you protect your mental health and focus on your own needs rather than just the needs of others.

Wondering how to set effective boundaries? Here are some strategies to try:

Research from 2017 links participation in leisure activities with improved quality of life and higher job satisfaction.

Maybe you feel most relaxed after physical activities like a game of tennis, yoga, or hiking. Or maybe you prefer more passive pastimes, like watching funny movies, reading, or listening to music.

Whatever unwinding means to you, taking time to decompress can help you feel refreshed and better equipped to take on everyday stresses.

Like sleep, exercise is important for many aspects of overall health.

Theres an enormous amount of research that links exercise to a longer, healthier, and happier life, according to a 2018 research review.

Exercise can help delay chronic disease risk, and also promote better mental well-being. Evidence from the review shows that aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, and mind-body exercise can all improve symptoms of depression.

So whats the ideal amount of time to move?

The CDC recommends that adults get 150 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity per week, as well as doing muscle-training activities 2 days per week.

Examples of aerobic exercise you can try include:

Some ways to practice resistance exercise include:

If youre feeling stressed, you might want to put down your phone and turn off the news on your television (or change the channel).

Studies suggest that consuming media that exposes you to news about disasters can negatively affect your mental health. A 2020 study involving 512 Chinese college students found that those who used social media frequently were more likely to have poor mental health.

A 2020 study suggests that social connectivity may translate to better mental well-being and a reduced risk for depression.

Sometimes talking with someone about whats on your mind can help you feel better. Connecting with a friend, family member, social group, or support group may make it easier to cope with stress.

If you need a little extra support with managing your mental health, a licensed professional such as a therapist can help you find the best coping strategies for stress and work with you to curb burnout symptoms.

When life feels overwhelming due to chronic stress from work and personal responsibilities, it can be natural to experience burnout.

Taking steps to cope with stress and exhaustion can get you back on a path to feeling better and performing at your best.

If you need a little extra support managing burnout, a licensed mental health professional can help guide you to get back on track.

Do UFC fighters have to take drug tests? Can they take testosterone or steroids? – AS USA

Posted: July 24, 2022 at 2:02 am

The UFC doesnt play around when it comes to drug testing. Regardless of whether a fighter is a champion, an up-and-coming fighter, or just a beginner, the same rules apply to everyone.

All UFC fighters get tested for Performance-Enhancing Drugs(PEDs) in and off competition. The UFC has actually been cooperating with USADA, the biggest anti-doping agency, since 2015. They handle everything from testing, analyzing the results, and applying consequences to the fighters who violate the rules. If a fighter tests positive for PEDs, USADA will give the fighter long suspensions. And depending on the type of violation, how long the fighter stays out of the sport can vary.

Narcotics, estrogen blockers, growth hormones and anabolic steroids are some of the banned substances in the UFC.

As soon as a fighter signs with the UFC, the USADA testing protocol starts. UFC fighters get randomly tested for PEDs several times a year on average. USADA performs five tests per fighter annually, which is a minimum of 2,750 tests a year, keeping in mind that some fighters get tested more often than others.

Jointly, the UFC and USADA spend a lot of resources to keep the sport and their fighters clean. When USADA agents travel around the world to test fighters on any day, in any place, fighters have to comply, take a break from whatever it is that theyre doing at that moment, and provide urine or blood samples to USADA officials. The UFC has the right to ask their fighters for extra tests performed by the state athletic commission as well.

If a UFC fighter refuses a test or flees the scene, they receive a long suspension. However, if USADA notifies a fighter that they have been selected for testing, fighters do have the right to delay it under a valid reason.

Many UFC fighters still use steroids to enhance their fighting performance, even though it is illegal in the sport. It is not easy to determine if a fighter is using them, but when caught, they might not receive penalties. UFC fighters, like other professional athletes in various sports, survive based on their athletic performance. For that reason, some are interested in taking steroids that help lessen their body fat, build up strength, and get larger muscles.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy is a steroid that helps with building strength and muscle, but is not the same thing as steroid abuse; TRT is legal.

Fighters who use TRT have to apply for a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) through whatever state athletic commission they are fighting under. The UFC does additional testing throughout the fighters training camp to make sure their testosterone levels dont spike above the legal limits.

Trans teens: We need to be heard, counted. In Michigan, the backlash is harsh – Bridge Michigan

You cant understand what you dont measure

Numbers are hard to come by, but Prins is one of about 3,950 Michigan youths between ages 13 and 17 who identified as transgender in 2020, according to the Williams Institute of UCLA.

Nationwide, there are more than 60 gender clinics treating transgender and nonbinary adolescents using gender-affirming care, nine of which are in Michigan.

Overall, nonbinary youths are believed to represent less than 1 percent of the more than 640,000 adolescents in Michigan. Nationally, their numbers are believed to be rising fast, as more come out, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Cataloging their population is tough, though, because the federal government has not allowed school districts to report data on nonbinary students, just males and females.

That may soon change as federal officials consider changing policies to allow but not require schools to collect the data.

The proposal comes from the federal Office of Civil Rights, which is considering collecting data on nonbinary students for its 2021-22 report in December, which identifies chronic absenteeism, sexual assault, school safety, harassment and bullying.

Such information could steer help to trans students who report high rates of bullying and harassment, according to Cody Venzke, senior counsel for the Center of Democracy and Technology, a nonprofit based in Washington D.C. that focuses on technology policy.

You cant understand what you dont measure, but with any sensitive data, there are risks to the students and families youre collecting data on, said Venzke, who proposes the policy change..

Someone could collect that data for a legitimate purpose but then later on it is used for a different purpose, such as a state agency identify trans students and reporting it to Child Protective Services, Venzke said, pointing out that some states have passed laws that consider transgender care as child abuse.

That is the No. 1 risk that schools face when they try to be a responsible steward of students data, he said.

Parents Defending Education, a Virginia-based group that opposes LGBTQ education in schools, objected to the proposal, stating it would empower schools to actively question and engage with children on gender and sexual identification issues that fall outside of the purview of public schools and are matters to be dealt with exclusively by parents.

Jennie Knight, vice president of the Grand Rapids LGBTQ Healthcare Consortium, said collecting data on transgender youths is important at a time when people are ringing alarm bells about more people coming out.

Knight said she has a 9-year-old son who just finished third grade and she does not want anyone at school talking to him about sex right now.

But I do think he should learn about all the different kinds of families there are, Knight said.

Being able to talk about gender at an age when children developmentally notice differences between themselves and others is not harmful, said Jennifer Schwartz, behavioral program manager at Corner Health Center in Ypsilanti, which offers health services and support for young people.

It helps them learn who they are as people later on, Schwartz said.

In the absence of schools, Michigan counties have begun expanding surveys to include information on LGBTQ people in health reports used to identify community needs.

In the last four years, at least 11 of 83 counties have collected such information, but the number of LGBTQ respondents is still very low, which makes it hard to accurately represent the community.

Accurately representing the community not only makes people feel safer coming out, but it also helps health departments tailor their services to meet those peoples needs, said Maris Brummel, an epidemiologist for the Kent County Health Department.

In 2020, for the first time, Kent County included demographics on its LGBTQ community in a county health report that lays out its residents health status, needs and issues.

Of the people surveyed, 4 percent identified as LGBTQ and about 1 percent of them are transgender. The report found 6 percent of the countys surveyed middle schoolers and 8 percent of its high schoolers identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual. The report excluded information on transgender youths.

One barrier is that many LGBTQ males and non-binary people dont feel comfortable responding to the survey, Brummel said.

Eaton County, for instance, is among the counties in Michigan that dont include LGBTQ residents in their community health reports because so few people responded that they identify as LGBTQ, said Milea Burgstahler, the countys quality improvement coordinator.

Less than six people identified as LGBTQ in the survey of Eaton County, which has a population of about 109,000. Burgstahler said, we couldnt analyze the data to represent a sample that is representative of the population.

Estimates vary nationwide, but the percentage of people nationwide identifying as lesbian, bisexual, nonbinary, transgender has steady increased since Gallup began polling in 2012. The firm now estimates 7 percent of the public identifies as something other than straight.

In Michigan, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated in 2019 there are about 24,000 same-sex households, about 1.1 percent of Michigan couples. Nationwide, the rate is 1.5 percent.

The national wave of legislation involving trans youths is exacerbating mental health risks plaguing them, said Erin Knott, the executive director of Equality Michigan, the states largest LGBTQ advocacy group.

We have seen in Michigan an uptick in harmful rhetoric aimed at our trans and nonbinary youth, Knott said.

She works with The Trevor Project, a national suicide prevention and crisis intervention nonprofit for LGBTQ young people. Last year, its hotline received 6,200 calls from Michigan kids, Knott said.

That year, a national survey by The Trevor Project found that 42 percent of the 35,000 LGBTQ youths who were surveyedand over half of them being trans and nonbinary youthsseriously considered suicide within the prior year.

Social media is elevating more transgender roles models, but how safe a person feels depends on where they live, said Leisha Taylor, a bisexual woman in Hillsdale. Taylor said historically, religious and conservative communities like Hillsdale have not welcomed gender diverse people.

The words they have used to describe us are abomination and abhorrent, Taylor said.

Taylor noted recent controversies in Hillsdale targeting the LGBTQ community as a reason why friends and family who identify as transgender have to hide it because they dont feel safe coming out.

In May, one member of the Hillsdale Community Library Board suggested forbidding the library from buying books for people under age 18 that discuss sexual identity and gender identity.

Gender diverse people can become confused about their identity when their communities are not welcoming or lack representation of transgender people, according to Jay Dunn, a 38-year-old man who transitioned in his late 30s.

Dunn grew up in Galesburg, a small city in Kalamazoo County, and came out to his parents as a lesbian at age 17.

It was tough growing up there, said Dunn, adding he was one of three openly gay students at his high school and they were frequently bullied.

While Dunn identified as a lesbian because he liked girls, he said his adolescence was a confusing time and something always felt off. It was not until a family friend came out as transgender that Dunn realized his authentic self.

Today, Dunn is receiving hormone therapy and had his breasts removed. He says it is the happiest he has ever been, noting that his wife now says your confidence is through the roof.

The only thing I regret is not being able to start transitioning sooner, Dunn said.

One of the most effective methods of treating gender-associated distress is providing adolescents access to gender-affirming care, according to endocrinologist Daniel Shumer who founded the states first pediatric gender clinic at Motts Childrens Hospital in 2015.

Gender-affirming care was first founded in Germany in 1918, began in the United States in the late 1940s and was made available to adolescents in 2007.

There are three forms of gender-affirming care: puberty blocking medicine, hormone therapy and gender-confirmation surgery, like breast removal or implants.

Puberty blocking medicine is a non-invasive, reversible process that desensitizes the brain gland that releases puberty hormones and allows kids time and space to explore their gender identity, according to Shumer.

Natural puberty would pick up where it left off if a patient chooses to stop taking puberty blockers.

Hormone replacement therapy produces more testosterone or estrogen depending on the sex features a person wants expressed. Both forms of treatment cost thousands of dollars a year without insurance.

Shumer said transgender and nonbinary adolescents experience gender dysphoria, unease that a person may have because of a mismatch between their biological sex and their gender identity.

Children generally feel this discomfort around age 10 when they are about to hit puberty and their bodies change in ways that make them uncomfortable, according to Shumer. At that time, transgender children who are out start asking their parents about getting gender-affirming care.

Shumer said a vast majority of the kids who are distressed about puberty and receive treatment grow into happy, healthy, successful, well-adjusted adults.

They really feel like the treatment theyre getting is making a huge difference and its potentially life-saving for a lot of these young people, Shumer said.

Shumer said he was exposed to a pediatric gender clinic during his medical training and saw how helpful providing high quality care to transgender and gender diverse young people can be.

There was quite clearly a need for these services in Michigan, Shumer said, noting that when the clinic opened, he was getting referrals from all over the state and the clinic became very busy quite quickly.

Over time, Shumer said the number of referrals increased to 100 new patients each year and more adolescents between the ages of 10 and 18 were seeking care.

Its clear that in Michigan and across the country, young people are thinking more critically about gender identity and exploring gender identity is a normal process of adolescence, he said.

Before Shumers clinic opened, families like Roz Keiths often traveled out of state seeking such care. Keith is the founder and executive director of Stand With Trans, a nonprofit that supports transgender kids and families with transgender members.

Keith said she was getting transferred all over the place because Michigan did not have resources for transgender youths when her son Hunter Keith came out as a transgender male in 2013.

Hunter Keith said it took a year for him to be seen by a specialist who was based in Boston, Massachusetts and had a very long waiting list.

Ostarine MK-2866 | Review, Alternatives,Side Effects and Results-Health News – Firstpost

Posted: July 24, 2022 at 2:02 am

It works by combining the androgen receptors in the body, which assists in lowering body fat and promoting muscular building.

Ostarine is a SARM (selective androgen receptor modulator) of the second generation, also known as Enobosarm or MK-2866. You are thus at the correct spot since this article will provide you with information on Ostarine and amazing Ostarine MK-2866 alternatives.

Ostarine is a specific sort of androgen receptor modulator (SARM). It works by combining the androgen receptors in the body, which assists in lowering body fat and promoting muscular building. It is a non-toxic substance with minimal adverse effects.

Therefore, let's go more into Ostarine; at the end of this section, you will be aware of all the essential facts and other facets associated with the use of this substance.

In an effort to prevent the problem, a concerted effort was undertaken to devise a realistic, safer alternative. SARMs represent the next generation of T-Boosting medications.

SARM is an acronym for selective androgen receptor modulators. SARM pharmaceuticals are anabolic chemicals intended to bind to androgen receptors.

SARM compounds are being studied by medical experts as a possible treatment for complicated conditions such as osteoporosis, cancer, sexual impairments, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and muscle wasting.

Ostarine MK-2866 and other SARMs are often utilized by athletes for performance enhancement, lean muscle growth, fat loss, a rapid recovery rate, and enhanced strength and endurance.

Ostarine and SARMs were believed to have much fewer negative effects than steroids. However, the reality is exactly the reverse.

Prior to discussing what Ostarine is, it is necessary todefine a SARM. Androgens are a class of sexual habitats. The most prominent are testosterone and estrogen.

These androgens exert their effects via proteins known as androgen receptors.

The multiple functions of your body's androgen receptors include developing muscular growth and strength.

The acronym SARM stands for selective androgen receptor modulator. This family of medicinal drugs modulates the behavior of androgen receptors. In other words, SARMs (Ostarine,Rad 140,Ibutamorenetc..) induce your DNA to alter, resulting in quicker, larger, and stronger muscular growth.

The word selective is a crucial component of the SARM concept. If anabolic steroids are blunt instruments, SARMs are scalpels. Steroids also bind and modify androgen receptors. However, they may bind elsewhere in the body, leading to acne, hair loss, prostate issues, etc. SARMs, on the other hand, target androgen receptors exclusively and do not bind anywhere else in the body.

In the 1990s, SARMs were produced by accident. As a result of exploring therapies for numerous malignancies and muscle-wasting disorders, such as those connected with AIDS, this incident occurred. James T. Dalton, a scientist, and professor researching prostate cancer therapy discovered the first ever.

Through this procedure, he found the first SARM, the chemical andarine. Its benefits on muscle development were amazing, and he focused nearly exclusively on that chemical.

Dalton spent the next many years perfecting it, and Ostarine was the outcome of this work. It would shortly enter clinical trials, where it would again exhibit its potential to increase lean muscle mass, but would not reach the desired outcomes in terms of curing cancer.

Immediately after this study, Ostarine would be accessible on the illegal market. While it is currently an experimental medicine undergoing various clinical studies, bodybuilders utilize it all over the globe. TheWorld Anti-Doping Agencycontinues to classify it as a restricted drug around the globe.

Ostarine has connected itself to the body's androgen receptor. When it combines, the receptors are designated to expand muscles more rapidly. The process of focusing muscle development modifies genes. This technique further enhances muscle development by boosting protein synthesis.

The functioning mechanism is related to the anabolism in which tiny molecules are split to generate a superior, more complex molecule. All of these actions need additional energy, therefore Ostarine functions as an external force.

This enables the body's protein to work harder, resulting in an increase in lean muscle mass during intense exercises.

Additionally, the supplement assists in enhancing endurance and energy for extended training sessions.

This is good for you if a fat-burning diet has left you feeling very exhausted. Consequently, your lost muscles recover rapidly via exercise. Your body's muscular mass activity also increased. Thus, your physique will seem slimmer and more refined.

Several distinct kinds of amino acids are contained in this medicine, according to certain sources. One of the amino acids contained in Ostarine is leucine.

Leucine was used by bodybuilders as a meal replacement supplement. It is excellent foraccelerating muscle recoveryand lowering lactic acid buildup after intense training sessions.

The bodybuilders who use Ostarine MK2866 to grow muscle say that this supplement provides them a tremendous edge over their rivals. It not only increases the intensity of their training but also promotes faster muscle recovery.

Ostarine is a non-toxic dietary supplement with minimal adverse effects. Some potential adverse effects include:

Some may have headaches at first use. If someone has this issue, he must reduce the dose. It is recommended to take aspirin before taking this supplement.

Some individuals reported experiencing nausea after ingestion. This occurs when estrogen levels are adjusted to modify the dosage of a drug inside the body.

Some individuals claim that following extended usage of large dosages, they get despondent. However, this state is only brief. If someone is seeing an increase in emotional problems, he should stop using this SARM.

Some users develop joint aches. Since this supplement is meant to develop muscle, this issue should occur naturally. If this issue causes you pain, you should avoid using it for at least one to three weeks. Until your joint discomfort disappears totally.

Some users report gastrointestinal discomfort. Which results in an abundance of weakness.

At the conclusion of the cycle, several individuals complain about their facial acne and hyperpigmentation.

MK 2866's effects are comparable to those of anabolic steroids. However, it must be remembered that the medicine is in no way a steroid.

The comparison between the two is based on their capacity to interact with Androgen Receptors. However, in contrast to anabolic steroids, its propensity to bind to the AR is limited to those in muscles and bones and no other organ.

Due to its limiting nature, MK 2866 functions similarly to steroids but does not have the same adverse effects.

Ostarine is a banned dietary supplement for a variety of reasons. It aids muscle development and quality that may have been impaired by an autoimmune illness or cancer.

Regarding recreational usage, it is advantageous for both men and women with muscle-building or muscle-definition objectives.

It burns fat beautifully to reveal a lean, muscular figure and provides superhuman power to improve your training volume.

It is reasonable to presume that MK 2866 may inhibit your hormones like other medications in its class. However, its effects are not as suppressive as those of several widely used SARMs that alter hormone levels globally.

Despite this, the chemical might obliterate your natural testosterone levels, which you can subsequently address with a PCT.

Although Ostarine is less potent than the original steroids, we cannot say that it is completely devoid of adverse effects.

There are potential risks associated with the usage of MK 2866.

It is also banned in the USA.

Some of them may include:

In general, Ostarine's bulking effects as a performance-enhancing medication are noteworthy.

Due to the fact that it stimulates the process of muscle regeneration, the majority of individuals like to utilize it to experience enormous muscular increases.

Stressed out? Here’s how it could impact weight loss – Khaleej Times

It can make you engage in unhealthy behaviours, which can cause weight gain

By Dr. Siddhant Bhargava

The link between stress and weight gain is striking. Stress impacts our ability to maintain a healthy body. It prevents us from losing weight due to factors, such as high levels of the stress hormone, unhealthy stress-induced behaviours, or a combination of both. Learning the connection between stress and weight loss may help you address the root causes and break the cycle of stress and weight gain.

Hormonal changes related to stress

Medical research suggests that the stress hormone cortisol may lead to weight gain. During times of increased stress, our adrenal glands release adrenaline and cortisol, and as a result, glucose is released into your bloodstream. This triggers an increase in heart rate and energy levels, which provide the body the energy it needs to prepare against a potentially harmful situation. The adrenaline high wears off when the threat subsides leading to a dip in blood sugar spike; this is when cortisol comes into action to replenish the energy supply.

We also tend to consume more sugar, which provides the body with the quick energy it thinks it needs when we are stressed. The body utilises as much as it needs and stores the rest in form of abdominal fat which one may find hard to shed. In addition to this, even if we are not eating foods high in fat and sugar while in stress, cortisol slows down our metabolism, which makes it difficult to lose weight.

Stress and unhealthy habits

Stress can also make you engage in unhealthy behaviours, which can cause weight gain. Some of those behavioural patterns are mentioned below:

a) Emotional eating: Stress seems to affect our food preferences. Numerous studies have concluded that prolonged, chronic stress can lead to hormonal changes that may increase your appetite and cause cravings for higher-calorie comfort foods like ice cream, chips, and pizza. While such foods might give us temporary relief from stress but eventually it makes healthy weight management more difficult.

b) Inactivity: Stressed people tend to be less active. The increase in stress levels decreases our exercise minutes and we may not find the strength to exercise with all the tasks on our schedule.

c) Skipping meals: Inconsistent eating patterns may contribute to weight gain. On a stressful day, our schedule may prevent us from eating a meal, which may lead to cravings and overeating later, which can cause weight gain.

d) Sleep disturbance: People who are stressed experience sleep disturbance. While some people sleep more than usual, others suffer from insomnia and restless sleep. And both situations cause weight gain. When we feel fatigued and are not well rested, hormones tell our bodies to consume processed foods over healthy foods.

Prevent and combat weight gain due to stress

Maintain a routine. Make healthy behaviour a habit and combat stress-related weight changes. Below mentioned are some of the most effective strategies that can prevent and combat weight gain due to stress:

a) Eat healthier: Eat foods that can have a noticeable impact on the way our body feels. It is recommended to stick to whole foods such as fruits and veggies. Have oranges and carrots, they contain immune-boosting antioxidants; eat leafy vegetables packed with vitamin B to regulate nerves; eat whole grains and food packed with omega-3 fatty acids. Practise mindful eating. Focus on what you are eating. It will help lower stress and promote weight loss. Next time when you eat a meal, enjoy it without any distraction.

b) Make exercise a priority: It plays a crucial role in stress reduction and weight management. Even a 20-minutes brisk walk every day can make our blood circulate more quickly, transporting the cortisol to the kidneys and flushing it out of the body.

c) Add stress-relief strategies: Adding stress relievers such as practising yoga, listening to music, going for a short walk, etc. into our daily routine can reduce the cortisol levels in the body and help us manage weight.

How to avoid this weight loss mistake that 99 percent of people make – Golf.com

In today's Play Smart, we're looking at a new study from the American Society for Nutrition, and what golfers can learn from it.

Welcome to Play Smart, a column to help you play smarter, better golf fromGame Improvement Editor Luke Kerr-Dineen (who you can follow on Twitter right here).

When golfers are struggling to lose weight, one of the biggest obstacles they face isnt changing what they eat. Its realizing what they eat. Thats the first step towards change, and its a difficult one for most to clear.

And a recent in-depth study from the American Society for Nutrition proves it.

The ASN study gleaned data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which surveyed almost 10,000 Americans as they detailed their daily diet, then asked those participants to rate how healthy they thought their diet was. Researches then analyzed how healthy these peoples diets actually were, according to its nutrition guidelines, and found a big disconnect.

We found that only a small percentage of U.S. adults can accurately assess the healthfulness of their diet, writes the author Jessica Thomson, PhD, research epidemiologist with the U.S. Department of Agricultures Agricultural Research Service in the Southeast Area, in Science Daily. Additionally, most adults overrate the quality of their diet, sometimes to a substantial degree.

Specifically, the study found that roughly roughly 85 percent inaccurately assessed their diet quality, and that in total, 99 percent of participants overrated the healthfulness of their diet. It was only those who admitted their diet was unhealthy that tended to assess themselves more accurately.

Put simply, almost everyone thinks theyre eating healthier than they actually are.

After sharing the results, the study outlines ways this disconnect could be rectified in the future. Mainly, are people willfully ignorant about what their diets are? Or do they simply not know what a healthy diet looks like?

As for what golfers can take away from all of this, first, get a handle on what the ASN describes some healthy and unhealthy foods.

Examples of foods the ASN ranked as healthier includes

And some less healthy foods

Having a healthy diet overall doesnt mean completely eliminating the latter foods. It just means enjoying them in moderation. Portion control is another big component of all this. You dont need to cut out the unhealthy stuff entirely in order to upgrade your diet, but if you are going to enjoy some refined grains like pasta, keep a handle on how much of it youre actually eating. When I was working hard to lose weight, I literally started weighing that stuff out, using a scale, and found it really helped.

When trying to lose weight, your diet plays a big part. Making the right choices will greatly impact you, and those choices start at the supermarket. Shopping for the right foods may seem overwhelming, especially when you don't know where to start. But before you make a beeline for healthy foods, you might want to consider trying food swaps first.

Just because you are watching what you eat, doesn't mean you have to give up on everything you enjoy. Sometimes, making a simple change can benefit your weight loss efforts, and that can be just by switching brands of your favorite products. To determine healthy alternatives, we spoke with Lisa Young, PhD, RDN, author of Finally Full, Finally Slim, a nutritionist in private practice, and adjunct professor of nutrition at NYU. She's going to tell us about some easy, healthy food swaps you can make at your local Walmart. Then, take a look at The Healthiest and Cheapest Walmart Foods You Can Buy.

"Rather than traditional jerky which is ultra-processed and often contains added sugar and salt, try Stryve Biltong, which has 16 grams of protein, with zero grams of carbs and zero grams of sugar," says Dr. Young.

Along with weight gain, ultra-processed foods have been linked to inflammatory bowel disease and cancer, so trying to stay away from them when you're looking for healthy foods is definitely a great option!

Stryve is an air-dried meat snack crafted with 100% American, high-quality beef. The protein will help get your recommended daily intake and may help you build muscle post-workout.

"Instead of your traditional BBQ sauce, try Stubb's, which contains less added sugar and no high fructose corn syrup," says Dr. Young.

Stubb's Original Barbecue sauce has only 5 grams of sugar, while others contain over 10 grams.

Studies show that high fructose corn syrup can lead toweight gain, which makes it an ingredient you want to keep out of the foods you buyespecially when you're choosing foods to help you lose weight.

Depending on the dressing, you can get a lot of unwanted (and unnecessary) ingredients.

"Instead of your regular zesty Italian dressing, try The New Primal citrus zest dressing, which contains fewer calories per serving."

This citrus zest dressing comes out to only 35 calories per two-tablespoon serving. Other dressings can be over 100 calories per serving. If not careful, those calories can add up.

Just because it contains fruit, doesn't necessarily mean it's always going to be healthy.

"While many versions of applesauce contain a lot of added sugar and unnecessary calories, Brainiac's apple sauce pouches do not," says Dr. Young. "These contain no added sugar and fewer calories than traditional applesauce."

The less added sugar, the better it is for weight loss. To add to their health benefits, Brainiac contains 120 milligrams of choline, a nutrient that plays a role in brain development and memory. It is also filled with 160 milligrams of omega-3s, DHA and EPA, which may positively impact many aspects of your cardiovascular health.
