Weight loss: Size 22 graduate sheds 6 stone after doctors warn rare brain condition could be linked to her – The Sun

Posted: January 5, 2020 at 12:45 am

A GRADUATE has shed an impressive six stone after doctors warned a rare brain condition could be linked to her weight.

Size 22 Danielle Puttick once tipped the scales at 18st 3lb - but now she's a slim size 10, weighing 12st 2lb.

6

The 26-year-old animation designer, from Sunderland, was diagnosed with Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IH) in November 2016.

Doctors warned Danielle's size may have contributed to the condition and advised her to lose weight to reverse the effects.

She joined her local Slimming World, at Silksworth Medical Church, a month later.

Danielle said: "My condition left me bedbound for a while but I wouldn't let it beat me.

6

"I have been big my entire life, but decided I wanted to lose weight when I started my masters degree in design.

"My main motivation was that I wanted a nice photo of myself.

"After I became ill, I was told by doctors that they didnt know what causes the condition.

"But the doctors said that it might have something to to with weight and said I needed to lose some as it could reverse the effects of the condition.

"That was the moment when I thought 'I really have to do this now'. I joined Slimming World as soon as I was able to walk out of the hospital on crutches."

Danielle was studying at Sunderland University when she began to suffer from migraines.

She was referred for an eye test on October 24, 2016, where opticians found blood at the back of her eye.

Medics thought Danielle was suffering from a brain haemorrhage and transferred her to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary the next day for a CT scan.

There, doctors diagnosed her with IH, a condition which causes raised fluid pressure around the brain.

Danielle had surgery immediately and had a lumbar stent placed in her back, to control the flow of brain fluids.

Official health advice says sustainable weight loss through healthy eating is a critical part of treatment for people with IH who are overweight.

Past studies have shown weight loss can reduce symptoms, but Danielle says this wasn't the case with her.

Although her overall health has improved, Danielle says she still suffers from tiredness and migraines.

Intracranial hypertension: the facts

Intracrainial hypertension (IH) is the build-up of pressure around the brain.

Acute IH can be caused by stroke, injury or a brain abcess.

Chronic IH (which Danielle has) is rare and it's often unclear why it happens.

It mainly affects women in their 20s/30s and has been associated with:

But these are only links, not necessarily causes.

Symptoms include:

She said: "Since my diagnosis, I have found my condition gets bad if I do a long day but I dont believe it has got anything to do with weight.

"When I was doing an internship I found that anxiety and stress were triggers.

"But I had always wanted to lose weight and feel happy that I have finally have. Slimming World is like a family and gave me a life."

This Guy Got Fit, Lost 160 Pounds, and Gained the Confidence He Always Wanted – menshealth.com

Posted: January 5, 2020 at 12:45 am

Following the death of his father when he was a child, Thomas began to overeat as a way of coping with his depression and anxiety. That weight gain continued into early adulthood. "That overeating and stress eating just kept getting worse over the years," he says, sharing his story with Barcroft TV.

"When you're a big guy you don't have many friends," he adds. This led to such low self-esteem that he hated how he looked so much that he avoided mirrors (and all "reflective surfaces in general") and had to "teach himself" how to smile.

"When the doctor told me I was clinically obese, that was the point when it became real," he says. "I wanted to lose the weight, and that was the very beginning of my transformation."

Thomas started off slowly, "just walking and cutting out certain foods, sodas, processed foods," and gradually began to increase his levels of activity. "Once I really started getting going, I actually started enjoying it," he says. "I turned it into a game: every month I wanted to lose more weight."

At his heaviest, Thomas weighed 360 pounds. He has since managed to drop 160 pounds, and in addition to feeling more energetic, he also feels more comfortable with himself. "Workout out gives me more confidence," he says. "After a good workout I always feel a hundred times better, even if I was exhausted before. As I was losing the weight, I started to be able to talk to people better, I started to be able to look people in the eyes when I talked to them before, eye contact was very difficult."

He adds that about six months into his journey, he was able to start looking in the mirror and could stand to see himself in photos.

"I believe I'm in the best state I've ever been in," he says, although he admits there are still down days. He deals with these by telling himself: "Best just to keep on moving and keep on doing what I'm doing, and eventually I'll get to where I want to be... Whatever that looks like on the scale isn't what I care about, being happy is really what's most important."

Rampage Jackson to document weight loss journey: Believe it or not, I lost 20 lbs for Fedor fight – Bloody Elbow

Posted: January 5, 2020 at 12:45 am

Quinton Rampage Jackson said he felt like a hippopotamus, after weighing in at a career high 265 lbs and eventually getting knocked out by Fedor Emelienenko at the Bellator Japan event. He has vowed to drop back down to light heavyweight, where he found most of his career success, and now plans to document his weight loss journey.

The former UFC champion took to Instagram about it, calling the loss a wake up call and admitting that his weight really got out of hand. He says he was actually 20 lbs heavier before the fight.

I wasnt impressed with my performance (in my GSP voice) because I have to lose a lot of weight and finish my career strong. Coach Cal from the training lab fixed my medical condition, the only problem was i met him too late, he wrote. I wont fight again until Im walking around weight is at least 230lbs. My goal is to go back to 205. Believe it or not I lost 20lbs for the fight but it wasnt enough because Im not a true heavyweight. I want to make my day one fans proud to ride with me again. it sucks to lose, but this fight was a wake up call.

Defeat is a hard pill to swallow... but its part of the job, Rampage continued on a separate post. Hate letting my people and fans down. Maybe this wont be my last loss but it will be the last time I defeat myself. Im gonna document my weight loss journey. If you feel uncomfortable with your weight do it with me. Tag me in your posts of you working out and eating clean.

Rampage also managed to poke fun of his own situation, and reposted some memes that came out of his fight.

Obesity is a major problem in the US. To give you a better idea, it affects nearly 40% of the populationthats over 93 million people!

As it is, it can increase your risk of certain conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. In fact, its one of the leading causes of death in the country.

Fortunately, its preventable. It might take some effort, but its definitely possible to shed the excess body fat.

Looking for some life hacks to lose weight? If so, youre on the right page! Well be going over a few tips below.

To lose weight, you have to create a calorie deficit by consuming less than you burn. The opposite is also truethat is, eating more than you burn can lead to weight gain.

As far as maintaining your body weight goes, that happens when you consume the same amount of calories that you burn.

There are a number of things that you can do to lose weight. Here are some of them.

Reducing your sugar intake can help you lose weight. For one thing, youll be consuming fewer calories.

Not only that, but you wont get hungry as quickly (changes in blood glucose can increase hunger). As a result, youll eat less throughout the day, which will help with your weight loss efforts.

Given that, it may be hard to stay away from some of the snacks that you see on defineawesome.com. You can still have them; just eat them in moderation!

Studies have shown that those who keep food diaries are more likely to lose weight. It doesnt matter whether you use a paper journal or an appthe goal is to record everything you eat each day.

That way, youll be more aware of what, when, and why youre eating. You can also use it to track and measure your weight on a weekly basis.

Regular exercise is one of the best things that you can do for your body. First and foremost, itll help you burn extra calories, which will help you shed the fat.

Not only that, but itll lower your risk of various diseases such as osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers.

How often should you exercise? Aim for at least one hour of moderate-intensity activity per day.

Weight loss doesnt occur overnight; it takes time. So dont be discouraged if the numbers arent dropping as quickly as youd like them to.

The key is to stay positive. The last thing you want to do is to lose sight of your goal!

And there we have itfour life hacks to lose weight. If anything, the most important thing is to make a plan and stick with it!

Could this be the last diet you’ll ever need to do? – The Times

No banned foods, no recipes, no fads psychologist and addiction expert Shahroo Izadis weight-loss book is all about changing the way you relate to what you eat. Can it really work? Well, as she tells Stefanie Marsh, it certainly did for her

The Times,January 4 2020, 12:01am

Shahroo Izadi used to weigh 19st and now that shes thinner she says its as if shes gone undercover. The people who dont know that I used to be overweight treat me completely differently. They treat me with respect. Its unsettling. My body might have changed, but Im seeing through the same eyes.

Izadi is 35, a not irrelevant age given that so many of her clients are of her generation, with formative experiences to match, she says. They come to her because they want to lose weight. Simple Type-2 Diabetes Treatment With Low Calorie Diet is So Effective, It Reverses the Disease in Studies – Good News Network

Posted: January 5, 2020 at 12:43 am

A breakthrough treatment plan for type-2 diabetes has the British National Health Service (NHS) bustling as they position themselves to adopt a new standard of treatment.

The course of treatment consists of a liquid diet of 800 calories to be taken as a soup or shake daily for a set amount of months depending on the time since the patient developed type-2 diabetes.

The breakthrough research arose out of Newcastle University which seems to have stuck a pin in many of our assumptions about type-2 diabetesas well as proven almost beyond a shadow of a doubt that type-2 diabetes is actually reversible, especially in newer patients.

The treatment is basically a prescription for a reduction in calorie intakea potential intervention that has shown incredible results for many different conditions.

RELATED: Bionic Pancreas for Type 1 Diabetes Gets Breakthrough Designation From FDA

The Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial, (DiRECT) recently published these findings as a means of demonstrating the massive potential of DiRECT as a general treatment plan.

One-third of all people taking part in the trial were free of diabetes at 2 years. Around three quarters of everyone who was in remission at 1 year stayed in remission at 2 years. Furthermore, the group who embarked on rapid weight loss had fewer serious medical problems in the second year of DiRECT.

Official statistics from the NHS place the number of Brits with type-2 diabetes at 4 million, and rising. Meanwhile, in the United States, the CDC reports that 1 in 10 Americansroughly 30 million peoplehave diabetes, 90% of which is type-2. Many people also go undiagnosed for years.

CHECK OUT: For the First Time, Scientists Have Reversed Dementia in Mice With Drug That Reduces Brain Inflammation

Recent studies carried out by Professors Mike Lean and Roy Taylor of Newcastle University showed that type-2 diabetes is triggered by fat spills. These fat spills, which came from the liver, traveled to the nearby pancreas where it wreaked havoc in the efficiency of the organ to produce insulin.

Insulin is needed to command your cells to absorb excess carbohydrates circulating in your body after a carb or sugar-dense meal.

The liver fat, astonishingly high in type 2 diabetes, falls to normal, explains Dr. Taylor in an interview with Medscape. The pancreas fat comes down gradually, gradually, and the pancreas recovers gradually, gradually. And thats amazing because we always thought that the pancreas had to go downhill inevitably in type 2 diabetes.

In April 2020, the NHS will begin trials with a liquid diet as per the DiRECT research with 5,000 participants helping to test whether the program can benefit the public. If the trials are successful, the breakthrough diet will become the new standard of care in a remarkably rapid frame of time for the chronic ailment thats been causing amputations, blindness, and heart complications for decades.

The widely-taken drug Metformin has been the standard of care for the treatment of diabetes in France since 1957 and in Canada since 1972. Illustrative of how long it can take to approve a treatment in the U.S., Metformin didnt receive approval by the FDA until 1994, even though 5.8 million Americans were diagnosed with diabetes in 1980.

Like all professional men and women of science, Taylor feels more research is needed before the liquid diet intervention is widely prescribed.

MORE: FDA Approves the First New Cystic Fibrosis Treatment in Decades

We need to follow up this group, said Taylor. We follow them up for a total of 2 years in the proper randomized controlled trial.

We have funding to follow up the intervention group participants for a total of 3 years. And weve applied for further funding because we need to see what happens to these people as time goes on.

But, he admits it is heart-warming hearing all the stories about remissions. Its all about the individual and all about helping people back to this state of relative health and happiness. And that does seem to be happening in quite large numbers of people who are able to do it.

Exposure to Trump’s diet linked to intentions to eat fast food regularly – PsyPost

Posted: January 5, 2020 at 12:43 am

New research suggests that President Donald Trumps affinity for fast food can influence the publics dietary intentions, and potentially contribute to a greater disease burden on society.

The new study, published in the journal Appetite, builds upon research that has shown a link between media coverage of a public figures health and changes in public behavior.

I noticed there was a decent amount of news coverage and general media commentary about President Trumps love of fast food, and it was in stark contrast to most of the food-related media coverage of the Obama presidency, which focused more on Michelle Obamas garden and the pressure she put on President Obama to eat healthy, explained Jessica Gall Myrick (@jessmyrick), the author of the study and an associate professor of media studies at the Pennsylvania State University.

That observation sparked my curiosity about the possibility that the media coverage of Trumps fast-food-heavy diet could be related to the publics view of how acceptable it is to eat fast food as well as how likely they are to actually eat it themselves. And, because obesity is such a serious health problem in the United States and fast food consumption is associated with higher rates of obesity, it seemed like an important topic to investigate.

For her study, Myrick had 1,050 American adults complete an online survey in February of 2018, which assessed how much attention they paid to media coverage of President Trumps eating habits among several other things.

This was a nationally representative survey where the sample demographics reflected percentages from the U.S. Census for gender, age, education, race, household income, and geographic region, Myrick said.

The survey revealed that exposure to Trumps dietary preferences was associated with the intention to eat fast food.

In other words, the more people paid attention to Trumps eating habits, the more likely they were to agree with statements such as Given my lifestyle and/or taste preferences, it is likely that I will eat fast food regularly over the next four weeks and I am likely to eat fast food regularly over the next month.

This was true even after Myrick controlled for the effects of education, race, political party, income, gender, age, and perceived weight status.

In addition, the survey found that people who indicated they paid more attention to general media about President Trump were more likely to say those close to them regularly dined on fast food.

In general, the results of this survey show that people who pay more attention to media coverage of President Trumps diet are more likely to view fast food as a socially acceptable meal option and are more likely to intend to eat fast food in the near future, Myrick explained.

For both Republicans and Democrats, greater attention to media coverage of Trumps diet was related to more positive attitudes toward fast food. However, for Republicans, this relationship was nearly twice as strong, meaning that as attention to media coverage of Trumps diet increases, Republicans are quicker to report positive attitudes toward fast food than are Democrats.

But, for people who did not identify as either Republicans or Democrats (that is, people who identify as Independent or who identify with smaller parties), there was not a relationship between attention to media about Trumps diet and attitudes toward fast food, Myrick told PsyPost.

Even if the effects of media coverage of Trumps love of fast food are small at the individual level, when you aggregate those effects across the entire U.S. population, these data suggest there could be harm caused to public health by encouraging many Americans to eat fast food more so than they would if the president was not so positive about this unhealthy type of food, Myrick added.

However, the study does not provide definite information about cause-and-effect relationships between Trumps diet and Americans intentions to eat fast food.

This was a cross-sectional survey, or single snapshot of the interrelationships between attention to media coverage about Trumps diet and fast food-related attitudes and behavioral intentions. So, it only gives us a good idea of that one point in time, Myrick said.

Future work could follow people over time to see how, as their attention to different types of media accumulates and shifts, their dietary choices might likewise shift.

The study was titled: Connections between viewing media about President Trumps dietary habits and fast food consumption intentions: Political differences and implications for public health.

Why This OB-GYN Recommends The Mediterranean Diet For Perimenopause – mindbodygreen.com

Posted: January 5, 2020 at 12:43 am

The Mediterranean Diet has, for the third year in a row, been named the healthiest overall diet by the annual ranking from U.S. News & World Report.

And if you dig into the benefits of the Mediterranean diet, it makes sense. It's good for your brain, heart, and gut, and according to Alyssa Dweck, M.D., it's a great diet for healthy aging.

Dweck is an OB-GYN, so she's worked closely with plenty of women through the stages of perimenopause and menopause. She recently joined us on episode 141 of the mindbodygreen podcast (be sure to check out the full episode), where we asked her what she tells her patients dealing with all that comes along with aging.

Dweck was quick to emphasize the importance of lifestyle, not just your diet. "Typically, in gyno world, we recommend the Mediterranean diet," she says. "I'm an advocate of a lifestyle diet rather than a diet that you do for a couple of weeks and then go off of it. Lifestyle is key."

The Mediterranean diet is, indeed, not just a diet, as it also encourages an active lifestyle and healthy social relationships. People who live in Blue Zoneslike near the Mediterranean Sea, after all, enjoy happy hour with their friends often. But Dweck reminds those suffering from perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms like hot flashes or issues sleeping, should really moderate alcohol consumption.

She, of course, also recommends exercise: "With age and hormone changes that come along with a woman's life cycle, we can see changes in metabolism. And we also can see diminishment in the lean body mass, or muscle tissue, which can lead towards weight gain and less energy as age progresses."

Good news there: A Mediterranean Diet was found to boost athletic performance in a recent study, suggesting the lifestyle is good for many reasons.

Ultimately, "we see many people who age gracefully in the Mediterranean population," Dweck adds. "So, I think we really can take a lesson from that."

When it comes to managing our health as we get older, there are a so many ways we can approach diet and fitness. But time and time again, the principles of the Mediterranean Diet come up as tried-and-true ways to get the most out of our health. To get started with a Mediterranean lifestyle, check out our 7-day Mediterranean diet meal plan.
