Sandi Toksvig weight loss: Presenter shed 4st after health scare – Im going to die’ – Express.co.uk

Sandi Toksvig previously revealed that before starring on The Great British Bake Off, alongside Noel Fielding, she was a size 22 but in preparation for being on one of Britains most popular television shows, the 61-year-old presenter shed four stone - how did she do it?

Sandi Toksvig returns to British television screens tonight with The Great Christmas Bake Off, a spin-off from the popular baking show, alongside co-presenter Noel Fielding and jolly judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood, to show off her trim physique after her four stone weight loss.

In tonight's episode,four bakers from earlier series (including pastry star baker Briony Williams from 2018 and Hollywood handshake recipient Chuen-Yan Yan from 2017)are competing in a set of festive baking challenges.

Sandi Toksvig is well known for presentingThe Great British Bake Offon Channel 4, but before she joined the show's line-up she wore a dress size 22.

Sincejoining the show, Sandi has trimmed her figure down to a size 10 in just 12 months.

Sandi revealed that she had lost the weight by making one major change to her diet - going sugar-free.

After her partner voiced concerns about her health, Sandi decided it was time to make a change.

The 61-year-old mother of three was frightened for her life when she sought help from thepersonaltrainer and weight loss expert Louise Parker.

I had tried every diet out there - I would lose weight for a bit, then put it back on again.

Then, by chance, my partner, Debbie, and I saw an advert for Louise Parker in an airline magazine.

I liked what she had to say - she didn't make ridiculous promises.

With the newfound strength and boost of encouragement, Sandi got in touch with Louise Parker.

Sandi revealed: I was never interested in how I look. The number one thing in my whole life is my children and I want to be there for them, she added.

My dad died of a massive heart attack when he was 59, as he didn't look after himself. My brother had a heart attack [a few years] ago and you start thinking."

In an interview with Good House Keeping, Sandi reflected on her first encounter with Louise Parker: I sat on Louises sofa and told her: 'Im going to die.' And she said to me: Not on my watch, Sandi'.

The Louise Parker diet plan encourages followers to go sugar-free, exercise every day and cut out complex carbs.

As a result, by following the diet plan Sandi was able to change her life for good and managed to lose four stone in 12 months and go from a size 22 to a size 10.

Speaking in her column for Good Housekeeping, she said: "I'mnot quite as thin as I was, but I certainly haven't put it back on again."

Although Sandi did not keep off her initial weight loss, Sandi has still managed to maintain a trim figure and has stuck to her healthy eating habits.

The wonderful thing is I now have the tools to deal with it. Mostly now I don't eat carbs - actually, I'm not attracted to them anymore."

She revealed: At my worst, I was a size 22. When I first started I couldnt touch my knees. Now I can run 5K no problem.

The comedian and TV presenter looks better than ever and has managed to maintain her slimmed-down figure, but will no doubt find avoiding sugar quite difficult as one of the presenters on The Great British Bake Off.

Fellow TV presenter Paul Hollywood has also undergone a weight loss transformation.

The Great British Bake Off judge has lost a stone by making one change in his diet and revealed cutting out alcohol helped him start his weight loss journey.

Paul told the Sun: I don't have to go out now, I just drink water all day. I promise. It's helped shift a few pounds too.

The top 10 fights of the decade – MMA Fighting

There was no shortage of amazing fights over the last decade, which made tallying the top ten challenging and, dare I say, enjoyable.

In MMA, its often fantastic finishes that steal the headlines dramatic knockouts and anatomically stunning submissions. But such a conclusion isnt necessary when considering the great fights of the decade. Sure, sometimes we get that closure, but what makes a fight great is the ebb and flow of the exchanges between two fighters that are meeting each other at the perfect time.

During a great fight, youre never completely sure who is going to win until the referee waves off the action or raises one of the competitors hands. For fans, when watching a truly great fight, nothing else in the world matters for as long as the war wages on. Afterwards, it clings to your memory like the inauguration of a president, and it feels like a milestone in the sports history.

10. Mark Hunt vs. Antonio Silva 1

Fans and media could smell a knockout on the cards when K-1 superstar and resurgent UFC heavyweight Mark Hunt was pitted against gargantuan Brazilian, Antonio Silva, in the main event of UFC Fight Night Brisbane in November 2011.

The stoppage would never come, but the spectators that night were treated to a rollercoaster of emotions, which resulted in arguably the greatest heavyweight fight in MMA history.

Silva got the better of things in the first 10 minutes. He even sent the notoriously durable Kiwi to the canvas in the first round. However, a piston right hand put the Brazilian down at the midway point of the fight, and it completely shifted the momentum back in the favor of The Super Samoan. Silva roared back towards the end of the fourth after a strong start from Hunt, whose platinum locks were died pink by free-flowing blood.

In a furious final stanza, Hunt threw caution to the win as he catapulted himself into exchanges, leaving Silvas face looking like a butchers block as he swallowed hook after hook. Although he stumbled on several occasions, the Brazilian remained on his feet as Hunt sliced through his guard with elbows between lashings of power shots.

Blood completely camouflaged the left side of Silvas face by the time final bell sounded. Ultimately, the bout was declared a draw, a fitting result given the toll on both mens bodies.

Although he had been cleared to use testosterone replacement therapy ahead of the fight, Silva failed a test for elevated level of the substance in the aftermath of the clash. Hunts resume reflected a draw, but Silvas was marked with a no-contest due to that post-fight failure. Silva received a nine-month suspension and his $50,000 bonus was awarded to Hunt.

9. Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 1

It was obvious from the second they both stood on a stage together for the UFC 196 pre-fight press conference that Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz were a match made in heaven.

McGregor was at the height of his powers on the back of his flash knockout of Jose Aldo. After being drafted on short notice due to a late withdrawal from Rafael dos Anjos, Diaz was perceived as the underdog despite his superior experience at welterweight.

Without the strain of a weight cut, the Irishman was more outspoken and confident than ever ahead of the meeting. He openly took shots at Diazs wealth and his intelligence. The Stockton natives focus appeared to be on the fight itself; he took aim at McGregors training partners and previous opponents during verbal exchanges.

When the fight got underway, McGregor unloaded his full arsenal to the body, head and legs of Diaz. Diaz took wheel kicks, oblique kicks to the knee, turning side kicks to the body and a number of McGregors signature lefts. But other than his bloody faade, Diaz seemed undeterred as the second round got underway.

It took most spectators roughly two minutes to realize that John Kavanaghs predication of a full recovery for his fighter between the first and second rounds would not materialize.

After eating a classic one-two from Diaz, the Dubliner stumbled back and took a deep breath. Diaz smelled blood, and he went in for the kill, throwing slaps and hooks before smothering his foe against the fence. McGregor rallied a final time, but after eating another pair of two-shot combos, the writing was on the wall when he shot in for a takedown. Diaz locked in a guillotine, used it to sweep, and took mount. There, he dropped bombs until the Irishman gave up his back. Shortly thereafter, McGregor succumbed to a rear-naked choke.

McGregor edged his way to revenge against Diaz five months later at UFC 202. Regardless of either fighters form, their trilogy fight is one of the most anticipated in the sports history.

8. Eddie Alvarez vs. Michael Chandler 1

November 19, 2011 was a magical night for MMA, and one of the two reasons for that was the undefeated Michael Chandlers title shot against defending Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. It arguably was the greatest fight in the history of the promotion.

The undefeated Chandler wasted no time trying to claim the belt, dropping Alvarez twice in the first ten seconds. The infamous durability of Alvarez surfaced when he landed a sharp right hand that brought the challenger pause.

In the third round, Chandler strugged as he ate combination after combination from the champion. Bruised and bloodied from Alvarezs attacks, he still managed to stay in the fray, taking gulps of air between shots as he tried to get out of the way of Alvarezs forward march.

With Chandlers eyes peering out of two swollen sockets in the fourth round, Alvarez seemed to be ascendant. And sure enough, the fights momentum shifted irrevocably when Chandler landed a right hand off a scramble at the halfway mark of the round. Ten seconds later, another overhand right sent Alvarez hurtling to the canvas. Shortly after, Chandler locked in a rear-naked choke that quickly forced the tap from Alvarez.

The victory made Chandler a star, and his defeat of Alvarez brought a ton of new eyeballs to Bellator on the world stage.

7. Mauricio Rua vs. Dan Henderson 1

At the same time that Chandler and Alvarez were going hell-for-leather in Hollywood, Florida, legends Mauricio Rua and Dan Henderson were going to war in the main event of UFC 139 in San Jose.

The fight began with a role reversal; Shogun sought a takedown before Henderson crumbled the Brazilian to the canvas his patented right hand. Before the end of the round, Rua returned the favor.

Rua was on the verge of being stopped after another right hand in the third round. But just minutes later, he was on top of Henderson, raining down shots in an effort to get back into the contest. After controlling much of the action in the fourth, Henderson was sent reeling and was forced to consume a number of shots before escaping the Brazilians mount.

Although it felt as though Rua did enough to earn a 10-8 in the final round, all three judges awarded the former Pride and UFC champion with a 10-9 nod, bringing Henderson a unanimous decision win.

6. Robbie Lawler vs. Carlos Condit

Robbie Lawler couldnt have possibly thought that hed have a fight as hellish as a pair of meetings with Rory MacDonald, but when Carlos Condit introduced him to the canvas in the first round of their UFC 195 clash, it brought him crashing back to reality.

Former interim title holder Condit was caught flush while off balance in the second round, and that made way for a third round where both men had success. Before the fourth, Lawler and his corner insisted he needed both the fourth and fifth to secure the victory.

Seeking the opposite result, Condit swarmed the defending champ, blasting him from the clinch with straight shots. But in the final frame, with 90 seconds left on the clock, Lawler burst into action and landed several jarring hooks and knees that demanded the full attention of referee John McCarthy.

By the time the action was stopped, the two men stood side-by side, hands held up the Octagon fence as adoration poured from the audience. Two of three judges scored the fight for Lawler in his second title defense a decision debated to this day. After the painstakingly close loss, Condit remains one of the first fighters that comes to mind when considering the greatest fighters to never win an undisputed UFC title.

5. Justin Gaethje vs. Michael Johnson

No fighter in the history of the UFC has so emphatically lived up to expectation in a debut as much as Justin Gaethjes meeting with Michael Johnson in July 2017.

He might not have won the opening round, but there were a lot of elements on show that were typical of Gaethje: He landed a lot of leg kicks, took a lot of shots, and, of course, he never took a step backward. In the final 30 seconds of the opening round, his knees buckled from a Johnson right hand, but despite Johnson throwing everything but the kitchen sink, he was still smiling when the bell sounded to end his first five minutes as a UFC fighter.

Ninety seconds into the second round, down Gaethje went from another Johnson right hand. But as The Menace chased the big shot, it was increasingly clear it would be his last throw of the dice. Only two minutes after hed fallen, Gaethje took the wind out of Johnsons sails with a right uppercut. Johnson sank to the canvas, taking his time to recover.

Gaethje carved him up as soon as he righted himself. As Johnson retreated to the fence, a thrust of Gaethjes knee sent him to the canvas and prompted referee McCarthy into action.

In just over two years with the organization, Gaethje has minted his reputation as one of the most fan-friendly fighters in the UFC

4. Nick Diaz vs. Paul Daley

Show me someone who says that Nick Diazs Strikeforce welterweight title fight with Paul Daley isnt the greatest one-round fight ever, and Ill show you a liar.

A single throng of what sounded like a doomsday bell brought the lights down on the San Diego premises for the official introductions. If that wasnt enough to whet your appetite, Diaz and Daleys pre-fight scowls should have done the job.

In customary Diaz fashion, he met Daley in the middle of the cage, backed him up and immediately mixed a physical onslaught with verbal attacks. But then, a left hook from Daley sent him down, and suddenly, Diaz showcased an avant-garde approach to head movement from all fours.

After swarming Diaz with his patented left hook, Daley found himself in the worst possible position, with his back against the fence as the champion showcased his volume striking to the body and head. Daley, the striking sensation, shot for a takedown on the jiu-jitsu ace.

Following a brief exchange on the ground, Diaz added more sauce to his shots as Daley tried to get his wind back. With 90-seconds left on the clock, he clipped Diaz with his left again, sending him falling forward to the canvas. Semtex rained down shots from his back in an effort to stop the bout, but somehow Diaz stayed in there.

Daley must still regret the decision to let Diaz back to his feet for the final 30 seconds of the round.

Diaz marched forward and unleashed a brutal combination that sent Daley cascading to the canvas with ten-seconds left in the round. John McCarthy watched on as Diaz landed a handful of shots to the defenseless Daley, forcing him to wave off the contest with three seconds left.

3. Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson 1

Outside of Steve Mazzagatti, nobody has blemished Jon Jones record, and the vast majority of people, especially those in the United States, didnt expect European upstart Alexander Gustafsson to be the fighter that would steer Bones to defeat when they collided at UFC 165. Sure, Gustafsson measured up to the uber prospect in terms of heights. But it felt as though he wasnt viewed as a real contender, at least until the opening bell rang.

It was then Gustafsson proved that not only could he easily exchange with Jones, but he could take him down too. He became the first fighter to score a takedown on Jones, and all inside 5 minutes. In doing so, he extinguished a common refrain from some pockets of the fan base that insisted Europeans couldnt wrestle.

In the second, it was Jones who was searching for a takedown. He grew into the fight as it wore on, but Gustafsson gave as much as he got, and his efforts were not lost on Jones corner, who frantically urged him into action ahead of the championship rounds.

Behind a mask of exhaustion and bewilderment, Jones found a big moment at the end of the fourth round, landing a signature spinning elbow and a feast of knees after chasing much of the round.

This is nothing all you need is one more round! the Swedes corner urged him between rounds. However, Jones kept his best work for the final five minutes, punctuated by elbows, his first successful takedown of the fight and a jarring head kick.

A relieved Jones hoisted hands aloft on the announcement of his unanimous decision win. Emptied of effort, Gustafsson slumped in his coachs arms after a performance that would see him become a perennial contender.

To this day, Gustafsson is considered the person who came closest to defeating Jones, bearing in mind that Jones sole loss came by way of technicality when he illegally elbowed Matt Hamill into oblivion in 2009.

2. Israel Adesanya vs. Kelvin Gastelum

If anyone questioned the heart, stamina, chin or ground game of Israel Adesanya before his UFC 236 encounter with Kelvin Gastelum, the 25-minute display the interim championship duo put on in Atlanta, Georgia in April 2019 quickly swept those queries under the carpet.

An early right from Gastelum put The Last Sytlebender in worse trouble than we had ever seen before in MMA, and it forced him to use the fence to stay upright. Adesanya roared back with a right hand that sat Gastelum down in the second. In the middle frame, Gastelum was stuck in the headlights of the striking supremo, absorbing several clean right hands as Adesanya went about his business. It was much of the same until he caught the Nigerian with a brisk left straight that forced a quick retreat in the fourth. Until the bell that ended the stanza sounded, Adesanya was forced to play matador as Gastelum bulldozed forward and looked for a conclusive shot.

The most miraculous thing about the fight was Adesanyas fifth-round resurgence. Gastelum shot out of his corner from the first bell in an attempt to put the finishing touches on his late surge, only to be halted be an uncharacteristic guillotine attempt. When he took the fight to the ground, Adesanya almost locked in a triangle shocking many who believed Gastelum would completely dominate the grappling proceedings and got back to his feet. From there, it was all Adesanya. Gastelum was forced to pick himself up off the ground on two occasions in before the fight ended.

The two men embraced in the middle of the Octagon, and when the result was announced in favor of the Adesanya, the world knew they were looking at the next face of the promotion. Six months later, the undefeated City Kickboxing product claimed the undisputed title with a second round stoppage of Robert Whittaker in the main event of UFC 243.

1. Robbie Lawler vs. Rory MacDonald 2

The UFC 189 co-main event rematch between champion Robbie Lawler and the man who many perceived as a future UFC champion, Rory MacDonald, reminded the world that mixed-martial arts is about more than Conor McGregor, who headlined that event in a short-notice bout with Chad Mendes for the interim featherweight title.

MacDonalds nose was pounded into his face by the time the fourth round was brought to a close. But he was up three rounds to one on all three judges scorecards.

In one of the greatest moments of combat theater ever witnessed, Lawler, with his lip split to his nose, stared at MacDonald before they parted ways to prepare for the final round, letting him know that the damage of the third and fourth were distant memories.

Through a crimson mask, MacDonald held his ground as Lawler tried to pierce his soul with his black eyes. But in the end, it was referee Big John McCarthy and cutman Stitch Duran that had to separate them.

Before returning to the fray, Lawler raised his arms aloft to the crowd, preparing them for the onslaught that he was about to unravel. A minute into the final round, MacDonalds body slumped to the canvas on the back of several Lawler hammers, as if there wasnt a single unit of energy left for him to give to his championship pursuit.

Intermittent fasting could unlock lower rates of cancer and obesity as well as cut stress and even make us live longer, new research suggests, but significant hurdles are getting in the way of the diets advantage. Rather than the typical current diet plan of three meals per day, spread out fairly evenly through daylight hours, intermittent fasting sees people squeeze their meals into just a handful of hours.

Its not a new concept, but it has gained traction in recent years with the rise of so-called paleo diets and greater attention paid toward atypical eating routines. At the same time, studies have looked at potential health and lifestyle benefits, focusing on how intermittent fasting can prompt whats known as a metabolic switch, the body shifting from using glucose-based to ketone-based energy.

Usually, those following an intermittent fasting plan would eat within a six hour window each day, and then fast for the remaining 18 hours, though some extend that to as much as 20 hours. The potential benefits from that are more than just around weight loss. According to a new review by Rafael de Cabo, Ph.D., and Mark P. Mattson, Ph.D., of John Hopkins University School of Medicine, many of the health benefits of intermittent fasting are not simply the result of reduced free-radical production or weight loss.

According to the review, intermittent fasting elicits evolutionarily conserved, adaptive cellular responses that are integrated between and within organs in a manner that improves glucose regulation, increases stress resistance, and suppresses inflammation. During periods of fasting, the bodys cells would normally shift into processes where damage is removed or repaired, and cellular stress is addressed. However, given the meal cadence of the typical diet, the processes dont have much time to work.

One of the best-known benefits of intermittent fasting is a change in how the body generates its energy. After a meal, glucose from food is used for energy; fat is stored for later use. When fasting, that fat is broken down in turn, with the liver converting fatty aides to ketone bodies.

Those ketone bodies arent just a sign of fat being broken down, but act as potent signaling molecules for our cells and organs. For example, they can influence how proteins, molecules, and genes that influence factors like aging, neurodegenerative disorders, and overall health among other factors are produced. Other studies found intermittent fasting could also help improve glucose regulation, manage blood pressure, and cut down on body fat.

While the science may be there, the lifestyle changes for intermittent fasting are a much bigger issue, the studys authors conclude. Perhaps the biggest issue is that were just not in the habit of abstaining for extended periods of the day.

First, a diet of three meals with snacks every day is so ingrained in our culture that a change in this eating pattern will rarely be contemplated by patients or doctors, they suggest. The abundance of food and extensive marketing in developed nations are also major hurdles to be overcome.

There are also barriers to sticking with such a diet, like the inevitable hunger, irritability, and a loss in concentration. Thats usually limited to the first month, the researchers point out, but it can be a significant hurdle during that period, and it relies on healthcare professionals making clear that its a temporary side-effect. Problem is, its also suggested, physicians themselves often lack the training to give good intermittent fasting advice.

One other avenue of research, mainly in animal models, has been the hunt for a pharmacologic alternative: a pill that replicates the benefits of intermittent fasting. That has included drugs that impose the same sort of challenge to the bodys metabolic system that fasting does, or that specifically triggers the sort of processes that go on during ketosis.

Were still some way from a pill that can do that, however. According to the researchers, the available data from animal models suggest that the safety and efficacy of such pharmacologic approaches are likely to be inferior to those of intermittent fasting. In short, if you want the best results, you need to stick to the diet.

There are several diet structures that all fall under the umbrella term of intermittent fasting, and theres no one single perfect meal plan for every person. The most common is probably the daily time-restricted feeding regimen, where you eat within a period of around six hours, and then avoid food for the remaining 18 hours period.

However theres also the 5:2 intermittent-fasting regimen to consider. That limits daily calorific intake to just 500 calories on two days per week, with regular healthy eating on the remaining five days. Whichever structure is picked, there should be a focus on exercise and meal nutrition too.

What intermittent fasting shouldnt be, though, is a sudden blow to the system. That, at the very least, is a recipe for quickly giving up on the diet. Instead, a four month transition period preferably with regular monitoring of body weight, along with glucose and ketone levels is recommended, in the hope of making a long-term behavioral change that maximizes the diets potential benefits to health.

Four years ago, Chris Pridham was excited to jet off on a holiday of a lifetime to Mexico, but it quickly turned into a nightmare when he struggled to get in his seat.

When he finally managed to do his seatbelt up he decided he would have to make some changes to his lifestyle, after holding everyone up on the breathless walk to the plane.

Chris said his experience at the airport "set the tone" for the whole holiday and due to his 24 stone weight, he could not partake in all of the activities with his partner and old friends.

He said: "When we boarded the plane I could hardly get my seat belt on and there was no way the table would go flat as my stomach was very firmly in the way. Arriving in Mexico was amazing as Id never been anywhere quite like it but I found the heat and humidity so uncomfortable.

However, I was determined to make the most of it and we booked ourselves on to an excursion to a medieval place. When we got there I realised it would be a challenge as I weighed in at over 24 stone and the terrain was steep and difficult to walk around."

He said it was "a real kick in the teeth" when his friends suggested that he used a mobility scooter.

After two weeks back at home I ended up in hospital with an infected mosquito bite and got sepsis and cellulitis. I was really ill from that and the extra weight didnt help" Chris said.

He was spurred on to lose the weight after his partner "point black" refused to travel abroad with him again.

"It was a bit of a wake up call and when I recovered I said to my partner that I wanted to visit my daughter who lived and worked in New York.

"She refused point blank!!

"She said she couldnt go through another airport and plane experience and said I had to lose weight if I wanted her to go with me.

That was the shock I really needed and I went online to look up my nearest WW workshop. I found one in Saltash and signed up immediately."

Chris said his coach, Gemma Medlicott has been "brilliant" in explaining the programme and he was able to understand the smart points system, which has now helped him lose more than six stone.

He said: "Basically, I was given a daily budget of smart points and every food had a value. It was up to me to balance my budget which I did and in a short space of time, I lost two stone and went to New York with my partner to visit my daughter.

"I could walk around and thought, this is brilliant.

I love bread and before joining WW would have three or four slices of thick white bread with lashings of butter and marmalade for breakfast, a big sandwich for lunch and a huge dinner. I now start the day with fruit and yoghurt; at lunchtime I have two slices of granary bread with a boiled egg and salad; dinner is stir fry veg with left over roast meat.

"I eat a lot of salad and am never hungry!

"I dont deny myself anything and have realised you have to have a bit of what you fancy otherwise you dont stick to it.

"I always make sure I have enough smart points for a couple of glasses of wine with dinner and two glasses of scotch for later in the evening! I even track those in the morning so I know how many points I have left for the rest of the day.

Chris said his partner is "delighted" by his transformation as now he can walk around, which was one of his "biggest struggles" before.

He said: "The WW programme has three pillars, food, movement and mindset. Walking around was one of my biggest struggles before but now I walk a mile and a half every day with the dog and I do the housework and help around the house.

"My partner is delighted!!

Research carried out by WW has identified what is known as the ripple effect.

This shows that when somebody joins a weight loss programme, the other members of the family can lose weight too without even trying as they are influenced by the new healthy habits they see.

A few years before, Chris had been best man at his nephew Gareths wedding.

Gareth had asked him to take on the role as his father, Chris brother had sadly passed away when he was only 60 years old.

Gareth and his wife Aimee had watched Chris transformation and were so impressed, they asked if they could come with him and join the same WW workshop.

They too found the flexibility and freedom the myWW programme offered them fantastic and a year later have lost nine stone between them which makes an astonishing difference of fifteen stone lost in total!

Chris added: I am a life time member of WW now because I want to maintain my weight loss. My GP is delighted with me and has given me a recommended weight leaving me 7lbs away from that and then Ill be at goal!

"Aimee produced this photo of the three of us and it looked horrendous and now we are unrecognisable as we have lost 15 stone between the three of us. People dont recognise us at all.

My partner is delighted. Weve been on lots of holidays and even did a cruise in the Caribbean. We flew to New Orleans and walked around for six days.

"I have no problems walking anywhere now. No more mobility scooters for me!! My biggest nightmare is fitting myself out with new clothes as Ive spent a fortune and all my bigger clothes have gone to the charity shops as my waist has gone from 48 to 38.

"If it wasnt for Gemma, my coach and the workshop I belong to and those lovely and encouraging Thursday night members I would not have stuck at it. I have never stuck at it before and Ive tried everything.

"I look forward to Thursday nights now and I still turn up even if Ive had a bad week. WW has given me back my life and I am so grateful!

A new study shows that half of Americans will be obese within the next 10 years. As a psychologist, Im concerned that society has become numb to this critical issue.

That were feeling powerless to turn this public health crisis around, but the physical and emotional health of our country and the financial impact of obesity do not afford us much time.

We have effective interventions to prevent and treat obesity. More people need access to affordable versions of those interventions, and we need a strong partnership with the food industry.

Obesity can be a very stigmatizing condition. Unfortunately, our society blames and shames individuals with obesity.

The way we see and treat people with obesity is very personal for me. I watched my single, working-class mother deal with lifelong problems associated with obesity. Sadly, these contributed to her death just a few weeks ago.

Please let me help by sharing what we know and what can be done about obesity. Long-term success in preventing and treating obesity requires substantive changes that can be demanding and difficult. It is, however, much more comfortable to face these challenges together.

Decades of research tell us that people who are obese have elevated risks for significant health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Obesity also increases the risk of stroke, certain cancers, osteoarthritis, asthma, obstructive sleep apnea, and orthopedic problems.

Also, obesity is related to systemic inflammation, which increases physical pain in our bodies. When one has these obesity-related diseases, like my mom, they are often taking a lot of medications and receiving a large amount of health care services. Obesity places an incredibly heavy burden on our health care system. The best estimate for medical costs associated with obesity for adults aged 18 and older in the U.S. was $342.2 billion.

While the physical health consequences of obesity are clear, the mental health effects are less well understood. Many of the mental health consequences depend on how an individual identifies him/herself. In other words, perceiving oneself as obese is what is associated with an increased risk of depression and even suicidality.

The person who sees themselves as obese is ingesting and internalizing societys devaluing views. Obesity stigma is getting under the skin and into their psyche, weighing them down with self-doubt and shame.

Last summer, at the age of 72, my mom said, I have no willpower. She didnt feel that she could stop herself from binging on large amounts of unhealthy food. A lot of people, and some health professionals, mistakenly assume that a lack of determination and the overconsumption of food are the sole causes of obesity.

I tried to explain to my mom that there are numerous contributing factors. Like many Americans, my mom had a very sedentary lifestyle, spending hours sitting and watching TV. She didnt cook healthy meals for herself. Instead, she consumed hyper-caloric processed foods and drank a ton of sugary beverages.

My mom couldnt tackle obesity on her own. No one can. Often the solutions my mom chose were too-good-to-be-true. Like most people, when she reached her short-term weight loss goals, she would quickly regain most of the weight. This cycle of little progress and quick fall back set her up for further failure and demoralization.

Similar to many Americans, my mom couldnt afford meal plans or a gym membership. Despite my husband and me paying for a membership and a certified fitness trainer, my mom was unable to maintain her motivation to go.

I couldnt convince my mom to work with a health partner to establish a personalized health action plan. If she had, she would have learned that there are often psychological reasons at the root of problematic eating. Much has to do with a persons ability to manage their emotions.

When we feel depressed, angry, anxious, or bored, we frequently reach for food to soothe our emotional pain. For some, food is tied to comfort and connection. One might say these individuals are starving for soothing and affection and use food as a substitute.

If my mom had agreed to attend an evidence-based treatment program, she would have learned to identify the physical reasons for eating, and how to recognize what the sensations of hunger and satiety felt like. She would have learned to spot her emotional states before eating and find alternative ways to manage them.

This could have helped her reduce, and over time eliminate, her unhealthy eating behaviors. Of course, her plan would have also included changes in diet, exercise, and problem-solving on how to move more. But, these kinds of programs can be costly, and her insurance might not have covered it. Even then, it probably would not have been enough.

Dr. Robin Masheb, a professor and clinical psychologist at the Yale School of Medicine, has spent the past 25 years researching obesity and eating disorders. As the founder and Director of theVeteransInitiative forEating andWeight (The View), she started the first and only national program dedicated to addressing the broad spectrum of eating and weight problems in the Veteran population. Over the years, Dr. Masheb has figured out what works to effect positive change.

She says, The obesity crisis in our country is a problem thats still growing. Solutions focused at the individual-level are just not enough. We live under environmental conditions that allow industry practices and systemic issues to override individual choices that prevent obesity. We need to prioritize legislation and regulatory practices that create healthier defaults in schools, supermarkets, and society at large.

In the previous U.S. presidential administration, there was a substantial public awareness effort targeting obesity prevention by improving the availability of healthyfood and physical activity forour children. T

hese programs have shifted from the limelight as apathy toward obesity has set in. There figuratively is no one minding the candy store. We need to come together as a society and recognize that obesity can only be addressed if we engage in change at the systems level.

I agree. As a society, we need to do something comprehensive about this crisis that goes beyond the individual. And, for the sake of our children, we need to do it now.

To optimize health and reduce the financial burden on our nation, in terms of higher health care costs and lost productivity, we need to recognize that obesity is a complex chronic condition that requires a team approach.

First, we need to invest more money upfront on these evidence-based programs to prevent obesity and manage it rather than driving up the cost of health-care utilization after the fact. Second, we need to address weight stigma and bias in this country, and at the same time, help people engage in positive change.

We need to balance empathy and compassion with encouragement and support and make these evidence-based programs affordable and accessible.

Finally, we need to address the systemic issues in our food landscape by increasing healthy food choices in our schools, supermarkets, and restaurants, and discouraging unhealthy decisions, such as sugary drinks and high-fat snack foods.

These changes wont save my mom, but they may keep you and yours.
