Econometer: Will a bad advertisement really hurt companies like Peloton? – The San Diego Union-Tribune

Posted: December 15, 2019 at 10:46 am

Fitness equipment maker Peloton was mocked throughout social media recently for an advertisement featuring a woman receiving a Peloton bike for Christmas from her husband.

Critics said the woman was already skinny and didnt need the bike, and it would be insulting to get a gift from a spouse suggesting they lose weight. A lot of companies have faced backlash for ads in the past few years Nike, Pepsi, Procter & Gamble but a Wall Street Journal article noted it did little to change stock prices.

Q: Do companies need to worry about social media backlash to advertisements?

Bob Rauch, R.A. Rauch & Associates

YES: Companies should always worry about backlash if they do something that is highly controversial. As for Peloton, Im not sure why they would have had any backlash over the ad in question because the product is for fitness. However, I certainly understand why Nike had some backlash re: Colin Kaepernick. We are in a social media-driven environment and need to use caution with our messaging or risk paying a price.

Norm Miller, University of San Diego

YES: The power of social media and explosive viral herd-like transmissions, sometimes informed and sometimes not, cannot be overestimated. Weve seen several firms quickly pull ads when recognizing a misinterpretation or unexpected reaction. Social media can also spot the YouTube video of a man on disability payments at the ski resort or the woman on sick leave at the beach, so we should all assume big brother is listening or watching and keeping us all in check.

Jamie Moraga, IntelliSolutions

NO: Depending on what it is, usually, its a short-term hit or miss. We have seen companies like Nike take controversy in advertising or by recalling shoes and make it work for them. Whether intentional or not, Peloton released an ad that made waves in the social media world. This has now led to millions of views of the ad that may not have happened should the controversy not occurred. Sales will determine if the backlash had any long-term impact to Peloton. In the end, this too shall pass, and the public will be onto the next thing.

Lynn Reaser, Point Loma Nazarene University

YES: While anecdotal evidence suggests that stock prices may briefly suffer from negative feedback, there also appears to be little lasting effect of ads positively received. Stock prices are affected by a multitude of forces, including interest rates, trade talks, and economic activity. If companies social media has no effect on their sales and profitability, why are they spending $84 billion this year worldwide? A companys brand is its most important asset and that asset must be carefully safeguarded.

Chris Van Gorder, Scripps Health

YES: I suppose worrying about backlash would depend on the sensitivity of the issue. Having said that, its always important for companies to think through what reactions they may get to their advertisements. A little research and testing upfront go a long way. Because of social media, the voice of the consumer is much more magnified today than it used to be. How a company responds to a backlash can be just as important to consumers as the initial messaging.

Kelly Cunningham, San Diego Institute for Economic Research

YES: It is a calculated risk. In continual quest for attention, staking a position through advertising may have both positive and negative consequences. This can work in the advertisers favor. Controversy and heightened perception generate greater top-of-mind awareness for whatever reason. So long as the highly valued target market demographic connects and reacts positively brand loyalty is promoted and enhanced, despite those who may react negatively and likely not buy the product in any case.

Gary London, London Moeder Advisors

NO: Edgy is almost always good. Even negative publicity usually translates into sales. I am thinking about Colin Kaepernicks ad with Nike earlier this year. As for Peloton, the inference that biking is for weight loss is a little narrow-minded. Exercise is for health. If you want to lose weight, you should eat and drink less, and better. The actor Monica Ruiz probably shouldnt be drinking all of that Aviation Gin if she really wants to maintain her ideal weight.

Austin Neudecker, Rev

YES: Today, everything inevitably receives numerous social media responses, good and bad. Companies should be cognizant of the social zeitgeist and attempt to be inclusive and respectful to their audience. While it is impossible to satisfy all consumers, companies can easily test messaging and anticipate likely responses. Likewise, as social media consumers, we should be forgiving to companies that make truly unintended mistakes, especially if they take action to correct the mistake.

James Hamilton, UC San Diego

NO: Theres an old adage that claims, theres no such thing as bad publicity. Its not always true. But Peloton got a lot of people talking about their product, and thats a key goal of any advertising campaign. Some people may even be attracted by the controversy, thinking that while others are offended, I do as I please. The Betsy Ross kerfuffle ended up working to Nikes advantage, and the Peloton ad could turn out the same way.

David Ely, San Diego State University

YES: A social media backlash to an advertisement can result in lost sales, a lower stock price, and a drop in employee morale. The successful execution of mitigating strategies may limit the negative impact to the short term. But even this outcome will require that the company spends time and resources developing their response. It is much better to thoughtfully consider potential public reactions to advertisements before they are released than to control damage afterwards.

Phil Blair, Manpower

YES: Any advertisement by any company that is rude or offensive to any group of clients is wrong and downright stupid. But lets remember with the advent of social media it is very easy for anyone to complain about anything and they will. But this should not encourage advertising campaigns to be so milquetoast that they dont accomplish their goals of being part informational and part entertaining. Offensive people who unreasonably criticize and complain should be ignored and left in their little negative world.

Alan Gin, University of San Diego

YES: Companies have always had to consider public reaction to their actions, including their advertisements. Companies have sometimes been adversely affected, including having their sales affected, having their stock price decline, to simply having their image tarnished. Social media is just the latest venue in which that reaction can take place. Given its popularity among the more coveted demographic groups from a business point of view, companies should definitely be concerned about reactions on social media.

Is Canned Tuna Healthy? Nutritionists Weigh In – Women’s Health

Posted: December 15, 2019 at 10:45 am

Canned tuna is the ultimate lazy-girl way to get some fish into your diet (because fresh fish gets stanky real quick and can be tricky to cook).

Convenient as the canned stuff is, though, it comes with some questions. Like, uh, how can fish possibly be okay to eat after its been hanging out in a can? Is it loaded with heavy metals? Ultimately, is canned tuna actually healthy?

Rest assured: Generally, canned tuna is a safe alternative to fresh fish, says Keri Gans, RD, dietitian and author of The Small Change Diet. The processing it undergoesand sealing of the canmake it shelf-stable.

However, those heavy metal concerns are real. Certain species of tuna contain higher-than-average amounts of mercury, a toxic metal that can cause severe health issues, according to the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). Thats why you should keep tabs on your canned tuna intake, especially if youre pregnant.

As a whole, though, the health benefits of tuna generally outweigh the potential risks associated with trace levels of mercury detected in some tuna, says dietitian Julie Upton, RD, cofounder of nutrition website Appetite for Health.

Still have questions? Here's the breakdown of everything you've ever wondered about canned tuna.

The tuna that ends up in cans is caught a few different ways, according to the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF). Most is caught using a method called "purse seining," in which a net is drawn out into the water around a school of tuna. Weights carry one end of the net deep into the water, which is then pulled up to trap the fish once they're surrounded.

"Long-lining" is another method, in which a long float-supported line is put into the water. Attached to that long line? A whole string of lines sporting baited hooks.

Finally, some tuna are also caught by "trolling" or "pole and line fishing." In these methods, live bait is dumped into the water to attract the tuna. The fishermen then drop in their individual hooked lines to catch the interested tuna.

The process that turns a fresh-caught fish into the canned stuff varies a bit from company to company.

Bumble Bee, for example, says their tuna is delivered to their cannery from the fishing boatsor from reefer ships, which deliver the tuna from foreign fishing companies.

From there, the tuna is frozen and grouped according to size and weight.

Then, it's inspected, thawed, cleaned, loaded onto metal racks, and baked. Once cooked, the tunas skin and bones are removed and the remaining meat moves on to be canned.

The meat is added to cans, which are automatically filled with the fish, salt, vegetable broth, water, or oil (depending on the variety). The lids are then attached and sealed, and the cans are cleaned and sterilized.

When you hit up the canned goods aisle at the supermarket, you've got lots of tuna optionsincluding different types of tuna prepared in different ways.

The most commonly eaten type of tuna in the U.S. is skipjack (which is also what most "light tuna" is made from), according to Starkist. White tuna, a.k.a. albacore, is another popular option.

Generally, these different types of tuna offer similar nutrition.

The most notable nutritional differences amongst cans of tuna stem from whether they're packed in oil or waterand how much sodium they contain. (The only real difference between oil- and water-packed tuna is the calories and fat, says Gans.)

Heres what you can expect from a one-ounce serving of canned tuna, packed in oil, according to the USDA Nutrient Database:

And, from a one-ounce serving of canned tuna, packed in water, according to the USDA Nutrient Database:

In addition to being a great protein source, canned tuna also contains key nutrients like vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids, says Jessica Cording, RD, dietitian and author of The Little Book of Game-Changers: 50 Healthy Habits For Managing Stress & Anxiety.

Vitamin D and omega-3s are both essential nutrients for brain development and cognitive function, as well as reduction of inflammation, she says. Vitamin D also plays an important role in bone health, immune system function, and cell growth, while omega-3s help support cell structures.

Concerns about how much tuna is safe to eat come back to the mercury situation.

Certain types of tuna typically contain more mercury than others, with light tuna being your safest bet. The reason light tuna is generally lower in mercury is because its made from smaller, younger fish that havent had as much time to absorb the heavy metal, Cording explains. Albacore, meanwhile, typically packs more.

The average person can safely eat up to 12 ounces of light tunaor up to five ounces of albacore tunaa week, Gans says.

If youre pregnant or breastfeeding, though, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends consuming between eight and 12 ounces of a variety of seafood per week. That means no more than two to three servings of light tuna per week, per the FDA.

Next time you're in the canned goods aisle, make sure your can of tuna meets the following four criteria to ensure it's the highest quality possible.

Bonus: Pick a brand that tests their tuna for mercury and other contaminants, says Sonya Angelone, RD, dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. It should say right on the can, she says.

Canned tuna can be a healthy part of your dietas long as you dont eat it every day.

Toss a little tuna on top of salads for extra protein, spread tuna on crackers and add a squeeze of fresh lemon, or mix with avocado, salsa, or Greek yogurt for a zesty dip.

However you like it, give yourself a pat on the back for getting a little more seafood into your diet.

The bottom line: Canned tuna is generally healthy, just opt for "light tuna" and don't eat the stuff every day to be mindful of your mercury consumption.

Latest Tesla Autopilot crash will be the 12th investigated by NHTSA – Yahoo Lifestyle

Posted: December 15, 2019 at 10:45 am

WASHINGTON The U.S. auto safety agency said on Friday it will investigate a 12th Tesla crash that may be tied to the vehicle's advanced Autopilot driver assistance system after a Tesla Model 3 rear-ended a parked police car in Connecticut last week.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) special crash investigation program will investigate the Dec. 7 crash of a 2018 Tesla Model 3 on Interstate 95 in Norwalk, Connecticut, the agency confirmed.

Autopilot had been engaged in at least three Tesla vehicles that were involved in U.S. crashes since 2016. The agencys special crash investigation team has inspected 12 crashes involving Tesla vehicles where it was believed that Autopilot was engaged at the time of the incident. In one of those, however, it was found that Autopilot had not been engaged.

To date, the agency has also completed a report on a 2016 fatal crash in Florida in which Autopilot was engaged.

Tesla, which did not respond to requests for comment Friday, and NHTSA both advise drivers that they must keep their hands on the steering wheel and pay attention at all times while using Autopilot. Tesla says Autopilot "enables your car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically within its lane," but does not make the vehicle autonomous.

Some drivers say they are able to keep their hands off the wheel for extended periods when using the system. Last month, U.S. Sen. Ed Markey said Tesla should disable Autopilot until it installs new safeguards to prevent drivers from evading system limits that could let them fall asleep.

NHTSA has previously confirmed special crash investigations in a number of Tesla crashes, but the overall number of crashes under review has not been previously reported nor has the agency's investigation of the Connecticut crash.

In the Connecticut incident, the Tesla struck a state police car waiting for a tow truck to provide assistance to a motorist, and then struck a disabled vehicle. The Tesla driver said the vehicle was on Autopilot and he was checking on his dog in the back seat prior to the crash. The driver was issued a misdemeanor summons for reckless driving; no one involved was seriously injured.

A Connecticut State Police spokeswoman on Friday referred questions about whether Autopilot was engaged to Tesla.

"This crash couldve been avoided. While autonomous vehicles are an exciting development, the tech is simply not ready to be deployed safely. Congress must act to protect the public from these vehicles until their safety can be assured," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, a member of the Senate's Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

Metal Packaging Market Expected to Expand at a Steady CAGR through 2024 – Montana Ledger

Posted: December 15, 2019 at 10:45 am

Metal Packaging plays an important role in the process of packaging and preservation. Globally, metal packaging has been witnessing a strong growth over the past few years on account of increasing health consciousness among consumers. There are several types of metal packaging used across the world. Use of cans is one of the most widely used type of metal packaging and it has become an important part of the human diet in developed and developing countries during past few years. It is of more value in those parts of the world where no or limited refrigeration exist for storing food. It is a mean of safely preserving foodstuffs, medicines, chemicals, etc. without microbiological deterioration. The global metal packaging is projected to reach more than US$ 150 Bn by 2026, with a decent CAGR in the forecast period.

Global Metal Packaging Market Dynamics

Metal packaging has a lucrative business opportunity, since it has excellent printability, cost effective- high speed filling & packaging, glossy & high aesthetic value over other packaging materials. The market of global Metal Packaging is anticipated to be driven by many factors such as rise in packaged food intake, and beverages, particularly the increased consumption and use of canned fruits and vegetables and the trend towards on-the-go lifestyles among progressively time-poor consumers. Nutrition retentive properties of metal packaging is one of the significant factors driving the market.

The growth of pharmaceutical industry and personal care industry is another major reason for the increasing demand of metal packaging. However, the increasing awareness of environmental concerns, and the adoption of new regulatory necessities on packaging recycling and the introduction of HDPE and PET bottles in packaging industry is anticipated to hinder the future growth of metal packaging market growth. To counter the alternative packaging material market, the metal packaging companies are also focusing on developing new metal packaging material prototypes and different product marketing strategies in order to keep on developing the market share in the global metal packaging market.

Resist loans, and feel free to thank me later – Daily Nation

By CAROLINE NJUNG'EMore by this Author

I have since stopped reaching for my phone each time the tone for incoming message goes off because I know that it is probably a bank trying to get me to take a loan I cant afford, or my SACCO selling me a holiday on credit when it is not trying to convince me to take a dividend advance.

Just the other day, a facility I had never heard of sent me a text saying that they could advance me Sh50,000 if I deposited my log book with them. As if.

It has been a particularly difficult year for Kenyans moneywise, and lending facilities, including the dubious ones, are falling over themselves keen to entice Kenyans that want to enjoy what remains of the year but have no means to do so.

I am, however, determined not to fall for the ruse since I promised myself to live within my means this year; also, the last thing I would want is start a New Year paying for a water dispenser that would make more sense in a hospital than in my kitchen, or a juicer that I will never use.

But it is not just the money lenders on a shopping spree, there are enterprising Kenyans selling weight loss. Before Christmas, mind you.

We can help you lose more than 20 kilos and have a flat tummy by Christmas. Seeing is believing, read the unsolicited SMS, which went on to direct me to a website where I could find out how to achieve this miracle.

Though it sounded dubious, I had to agree that the ad was ingenious. Weight loss is big business because there is always a woman somewhere seated fantasising about losing weight. Fast.

And if the extra kilos went before Christmas, then even better because she gets to wear a swimsuit with pride or skinny jeans without the danger of restricting blood flow.

Whenever my friends-of-a-certain-age get together nowadays, we always end up talking about weight and reminiscing about our younger years when we could eat a horse each, daily, and not put on even an ounce of weight.

Nowadays, even the smell of food makes us fatter. So yes, weight loss is big business.

I have, however, read and written enough about weight to understand that there are no shortcuts if youre looking for permanent weight loss, therefore I wasnt drawn in by the SMS.

But I was curious, so I clicked on the link. Turned out that the remedy is a Sh299 manual listing spices, herbs, plants and liquids you can mix right in your own kitchen.

The mixture, the write up claimed, can burn belly fat, increase metabolism, stabilise blood sugar levels, balance your fat hormones, boost your thyroid, get rid of small tumours and decaying cells in your body, and generally loose (their spelling, not mine) up to five kilos in a month.

Oh well, so much for losing 20 kilos in a month.

Allow me to offer my unsolicited advice no matter how good the offer sounds, resist the temptation to spend.

Theres something about Christmas that prods us to spend thoughtlessly, maybe it is the cheesy adverts, or the sparkling lights and cheery beats played in supermarkets and malls this time of year; whatever it is, resist it.

I especially suggest that you avoid the food samples food manufacturers offer in supermarkets because they are what encourage impulse buying.

Take it from me, this is not the time to develop a taste for cheese; if you dont take it, resist it because it will only leave you poorer.

The same goes for the many discount offers on clothes, because chances are that they are not discounted, in spite of what they claim.

Resist, ladies and gentlemen, you will thank me in January 2020.

These Speed Walking Hacks Will Burn Calories As If You’re Running – msnNOW

Posted: December 15, 2019 at 10:44 am

kali9 - Getty Images By speed walking, you can burn as many calories as you would running. Follow these speed walking tips to help you get the most out of your workout.

You dont have to be a runner to torch calories and reap the weight loss benefits of cardio. In fact, you can burn just as many calories walking as you can runningif you speed walk, says Michele Stanten, an ACE-certified personal trainer, walking coach and author of Walk Your Way to Better Health.

All a walker has to do to burn more calories than a runner is to outpace the runner, she explains. For example, if you walk 4.5 mph (a 13- to 15-minute per mile pace) for about 42 minutes, you can burn as many calories as a runner who does a 10-minute mile. Push it to 5 mph (a 12-minute per mile pace) for 35 minutes, and you can match the runners calorie burn in a shorter amount of time.

Shop Now

In addition to burning more calories, youll also boost your overall health. A faster walking pace can reduce your risk of potentially deadly health problems, especially heart and respiratory diseases, according to a 2019 study from the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom.

While walking at a speed of 4.5 to 5 mph may seem intense, its possible to sustain if you build your endurance and gradually increase your time, says Stanten, who offers her tips below.

Ready to pick up the pace? Here are Stantens top strategies for improving your average walking speed and boosting your metabolisms calorie-burning powers.

When you elongate your spine, you gain more distance in between your hips and rib cage, which allows your legs to swing more freely than when you slump into your pelvis.

Keep your line of vision 10 to 20 feet ahead instead of looking down at your feet. Roll your shoulders back and down to help open up your chest and un-hunch your back so you can take deeper breaths.

Bend your arms at 90 degrees as you swing them forward and back. Avoid swinging them across your body or winging them out to your sides. This can mess with your stride and make you lose energyfast. Pumping your arms will help you engage your upper body and core to help you move more efficiently and walk faster.

When your front leg reaches out too far, it acts like a brake and slows you down. With shorter, quick steps, your foot lands almost underneath you so you roll right over it.

To figure out your gait, follow this exercise from Stanten: Raise one knee to hip height so your foot is hanging just below your knee, like youre marching. Then, extend your leg in front of you and bring your heel down to the ground. It should be just a few inches in front of your other foot.

Alternating between short but fast bursts of walking with slower-paced intervals not only helps increase your walking speedit can also help you burn more calories, even after youre done exercising.

The longer or harder you work out, the more time it will take your body to return to normal, Stanten says. As you recover, youll continue to burn calories at an accelerated rate for as little as 20 minutes or possibly up to 24 hours. For a serious post-workout calorie burn, try this interval walk:

Count the number of steps you take during your fast intervals, and try to beat that number on subsequent intervals. If youre walking with a friend, ask them to keep track of their numbers and compare them at the end of the workout. This will motivate you to increase your speed and improve your endurance.

Here is how to avoid the sugar rush this Christmas – Lancashire Post

Posted: December 15, 2019 at 10:44 am

Herbal columnist Nicola Parker writes about avoiding over doing it on the sugar this Christmas.

December is well known for being a month of overindulgence. I cant buy a pint of milk without walking past a line of chocolates, decorated with festive pictures.

Ive swapped out my bedtime tea for hot chocolate and my weekend warmer is now a mug of mulled wine.

I recently navigating myself towards the biscuit aisle in the supermarket, craving something sweet for after dinner.

Thats when I realised, the sugar monster had struck.

Eating sugar, triggers sugar cravings.

Its a frustrating cycle that is surprisingly quick to break, though those first few days can be really tough.

Due to the health risks of a high sugar diet, its worth pushing through.

Over consumption of sugar can lead to increased risk of weight gain and diabetes, both of which can contribute to heart problems, joint pain and overall ill health.

Eating sugar can also leave us feeling lethargic, making us less likely to stay active and more likely to crave sweet foods.

Eating sugar when you are tired is a bit like adding newspaper to a fire as fuel.

Your energy will surge initially, but that burst will be short lived and youll soon need to add more.

If, like me, you dont want to let the sugar monster win, then its important to find sources of fuel that will burn for longer, sustaining your energy throughout the day.

Foods that are high in protein and fibre help stabilise our blood sugar, supporting our energy.

Protein rich lunches and breakfasts include eggs, beans, meat, nuts and fish.

Simply adding some sugar free peanut butter to your morning toast, or adding butter beans to a veggie soup can change a meal from high carb to a balanced plate, with very little effort.

Its also important to snack regularly and not yourself get too hungry.

The hungrier we are, the stronger the sugar monster grows and the harder it is to win the battle.

In my weight loss clinic, I find myself advising people to eat more rather than less, to keep their energy up, their blood sugar balanced and help them make positive food choices rather than giving in to the emergency snickers theyd normally rely on.

If going cold turkey at Christmas sounds too difficult but you dont want to enter January with extra inches around your middle and a habit of scoffing Quality Street after dinner, there is extra help.

I use a product called

Metabolic Balance. Its designed to curb sugar cravings and help your body manage sugar better, should you give in.

Its a combination of blood sugar balancing nutrients and herbs, including chromium, cinnamon and fenugreek.

While these things can be used on their own, combining them together makes Metabolic Balance the Rolls Royce of sugar remedies.

A few years ago, I recommended it to a lady whod requested assistance with losing weight. Her diet was a mess.

She was missing meals to avoid excess calories then crashing in the evenings and filling up on sweet food as her body urged her to give it some fast working fuel.

After weeks of calorie restriction, shed lose the will to diet any more and go on guilt riddled binges, promising herself that shed start again next week.

Much like we do in December before starting a new health kick in January while feeling awful.

Blood sugar this unstable increases our risk of type 2 diabetes, so we made some drastic changes and I put her on Metabolic balance.

With regular eating and the help of the remedy, not only did her sugar cravings subside, but when she did binge, she didnt pile on the pounds in the same way as shed been doing previously.

This meant she could let go a little during holidays and celebrations and not need to worry so much about the aftermath the week after, as long as she returned to her healthy routine.

So if the sugar monster has got his grip on you, it is possible to break free and if going cold turkey sounds too terrifying, remedies like Metabolic Balance can really take the edge off and help to speed things along.

For more information on this topic, call Nicola at Health and Herbs, Pedder Street, Morecambe, at her clinic on 01524 413733.

‘When I Started Counting Macros On Keto, My Weight Loss Finally Stuck’ – Women’s Health

Posted: December 15, 2019 at 10:43 am

My name is Danni Woessner (@ketowithdanni). I am 27, living in Massachusetts. For the past year I have been a stay-at-home mom but I recently went back to work as a behavior therapist. An embarrassing travel experience opened my eyes to the fact that I was nearly 400 pounds, so I experimented with various diets until I found (and fell in love with) keto.

I have been overweight since childhoodand I remember being made very aware of just how overweight I was at a very young age. I was active in high school as a swimmer but never really got my weight under control despite doing so much physical activity.

After high school, I lost a significant amount in a very unhealthy way but quickly regained it (and then some) after I had my first child several years ago. That's when my weight issues got really out of control.

I was a yo-yo dieter for years. I remember doing Atkins in 2015, after giving birth, and losing 60 pounds. But I slowly ate my way back up to almost 400 pounds. I suffered from binge eating and often hid how much food I was actually consuming throughout the day.

Three McDoubles for a quick snack? Sure. That was an average Tuesday for me. Vegetables were not a part of my diet and exercise felt impossible. I couldnt walk for more then a few minutes without being winded. I felt like food made me my worst self.

I was so excited for the trip. I knew I had been gaining weight but I was still going to enjoy my vacation. That was until I got on the plane and the seatbelt no longer fit. The belt had been snug for years for me, but I could still sit (albeit uncomfortably) without a seatbelt extender.

Asking for an extender crushed me. I had to find someone willing to change seats, because in the emergency aisle you cant wear a seatbelt extender. Having the whole plane stare at the overweight girl trying to make herself fit through the aisle was gut wrenching.

We enjoyed our honeymoon, but I was lazy on the trip. I didnt want to do much and moving was tough for me. And when I saw photos from our trip? It finally dawned on me on how big I was.

I tried Beachbody and lasted about 10 days. I looked into WW (formerly known as Weight Watchers) but only lasted a few days.

So, I started following a lot of people on Instagram that had similar stories and experiences to mine who had successfully lost a lot of weight on this so-called keto diet thing. I was intrigued. That's not to say those other diets didn't have great success stories too, but I personally felt like I really connected to the keto stories I read.

At the end of July 2018, I took the plunge and started eating keto. It was hard to navigate at first as I learned how to count and track my macros and how to measure how much fat, overall calories, and carbs to take in each day.

But eventually I got the hang of it and have been successful ever since. My biggest success tool has been tracking my food intake and macros, as it has made me aware of what Im putting in my body and prevents me from overeating. Ive also started adding in intermittent fasting.

In the beginning of my weight-loss journey, I didnt work out. I currently still do not have a solid workout routine. But when I was losing the bulk of my weight, I was kickboxing a few days a week.

Everyone's weight-loss journey will go differently. You have to trust the process. The scale is not always your friend, and thats ok. Those three numbers are just numbers. If youre putting in the work, it will work. It didnt take one day to gain the weight, and it will take longer than one to lose it.

For me, once I figured out the basics of keto, it was so much easier than I could have ever imagined. It helps that there are so many keto-friendly recipes that are just incredible. Though sometimes I do indulge in non-keto foods, I dont feel compelled to that often because it is so easy to make anything keto-friendly...and *just* as delicious as non-keto versions, I swear.

I want other women to know that you can change. You are not stuck at your current weight. If you are unhappy and just fed up, do it! Do your research, come up with a plan, and start. You can completely change your life whenever you're ready.

Preparation is everything.

Is your freezer filled with meals from that expensive diet you abandoned a year ago?

Or maybe you saw the perfect piece of exercise equipment in an infomercial and spent a small fortune on it, only to see it now languish in your guest room.

Or perhaps valuable storage on your phone is still being taken by the fitness tracker that only serves to tell you data you no longer want to know about your sleep, diet and exercise habits.

Those items are wonderful if you use them as part of a comprehensive plan to get and stay healthy in mind, body, and spirit, but living a healthy lifestyle involves more than buying into the latest gimmicky product or fad.

If you want to know how to be healthy, it's important to recognize that no specific diet or piece of equipment will be what gets you to your fitness goals, but rather your determination and intention to be in it for the long-haul.

Whether your fitness goals is to lose weight, get in shape or simply be healthy, here are three important tips to keep top of mind.

Consider the claims made by those touting the recent crystal water bottle trend, notably popularized on Gwyneth Paltrow's infamous website, GOOP.

These reusable glass water bottles contain a giant crystal said to infuse the water with special healing powers of some kind, with one retailer stating that each crystal possess its own unique frequency known to help with certain ailments and enhance desired qualities in ones life.

If only a rock could do that, right?

Is a jade egg going to balance your hormones? Even if if could, have you seen a doctor to determine whether they even need balancing?

Mari Kondo is awesome, but the tuning fork with rose quartz she allegedly uses in her everyday life and which will cost you a mere $75 is unlikely to restore a sense of balance, in this writer/psychologists humble opinion.

Does a daily celery juice detox make sense?

As stated by the Cleveland Clinic, Our bodies all actually have their own built-in detox machine the liver. If you treat it right with healthy food, physical activity and a healthy body weight, it can do the heavy lifting in eliminating toxins from your body. Drinking juice wont magically fix it or enhance it.

Much like the diet pills involved in the fen-phen scandal back in the 1990s, any magical quick fix, be it vegetable, mineral or other, should fail to pass the common sense test.

Any diet that has no protein, only protein, no carbs, no fats, only carrots or anything else that is extreme and immoderate is highly questionable.

Check with a physician or nutritionist before embarking on an all-or-nothing plan, or ask yourself if it passes moderation muster.

Is your goal to lose weight or eat healthy? Do you want to build muscle mass or be more fit? Are you trying to improve your concentration or check off the sleep box?

Considering what you really want to achieve helps you keep those important and motivating goals in mind. It also helps you choose a plan that is likely to get you to those goals.

Do not let someone else define your goal. If you dont want to quit smoking, youre not going to be able to do it for someone else. When you decide you want to quit, you can put your heart into it.

When deciding on a program, ask yourself if the time, money and effort are going to be worth it to you.

Fads are appealing because the quick fix is so tempting, but when it comes to meeting health and wellness goals, you cant just phone it in.

Prepared meals cost money, but food prep takes time. Gyms cost money, but relying on YouTube workouts may not give you the motivation or structure you need.

Think it through and try a plan you think you can stick with long-term.

If you hate running, dont start a running program. Its as simple as that.

There are plenty of ways to exercise, eat and engage in some type of spiritual practice, the cornerstones of wellness. There are certainly workouts, healthy foods and relaxation or calming practices out there that youll like.

Try something. If it doesnt feel positive, try something else.

Like your last boyfriend, sometimes if you give it time it grows on you. But if it doesnt, move on and find something that feels right.

You decide on a gym that seemed great on your trial days, but after a month, it doesnt feel right.

You plan to work out after work, but after a week you notice youre not sleeping as well or youre too tired to get important things done.

Changing things up and tweaking a plan is a great way to make it your own.

The healthy meals you bought may cost too much to continue forever, but if they worked, find a way to make them yourself on the cheap.

Its not a failure to decide to try something different. Its an opportunity to be creative and come up with something new.

Changing entrenched patterns is difficult. You must choose health and wellness every day.

One day it may seem like you can totally do this. The next day, inexplicably, it seems so much harder to skip that caramel latte.

Remind yourself what your goals are, and why theyre important. Text your bestie and wail about how desperately you do not want to go out in the cold and run, and then, not even be able to eat your favorite, totally unhealthy meal.

But keep at it. Its worth it to move toward your goals.

Sticking with your plans for eating, exercise or spirituality daily is fantastic, in theory.

The day someone brings your favorite dessert to the office, maybe give yourself a break. Eating it will probably cause less stress than depriving yourself, as long as it doesn't happen frequently.

If you miss a day of exercise, thats okay. Just don't skip workouts all the time.

Ruthless adherence to new wellness plans can be helpful to get you going at first, but when overplayed that kind of rigidity is more likely to lead to failure than a short detour from the path.

Making healthy changes is often self-sustaining. When you feel better, look better and function better, you will want to do more of whatever got you there.

That said, it doesnt hurt to build in rewards for effort. Putting aside money for something special, or making time to do something youll enjoy, are great ways to self-reinforce.

Using cheat days on meal plans and skipping classes or gym days as a reward can be worrisome, because its a slippery slope. Its more effective to do something positive for yourself when youve achieved two weeks at the gym or on a new meal plan.

Fitness apps that track progress are also reinforcing because you can the results of your effort concretely.

Its normal to slip up on new health and wellness goals. Theres no need for self-criticism, belittling or whatever it is you do when you realize youre not perfect. A lapse doesnt have to be an epic fail.

Evaluate your slip up, decide if you need to make a change, and start again.

Lapses give you good information about your weaknesses. You can come up with ideas about avoiding pitfalls, like not allowing the breadbasket on the table in a restaurant, or making sure you dont avoid the gym because youre avoiding the ex.

Lapses also give you confidence when you see you can regain momentum.

Use your common sense. Its a long and winding road to health and wellness, complete with roadblocks.

Focus on planning your path forward, recovering from setbacks and enjoying the journey.
