Let’s talk about weight – Daily Nation

Posted: November 25, 2019 at 6:46 pm

By ANITA MURAGEMore by this Author

"Measure your height, weight." Strolling through the streets of Nairobi, weighing scales beckon pedestrians to calculate their body mass index (BMI) at a small fee.

Irrespective of class, obesity in Kenya is fast becoming an epidemic, one that has fostered an environment for the exploitation of Kenyans who want to get lean without breaking a sweat.

According to a 2018 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about one in three women in Kenya are overweight, the risk going higher among women in upper socioeconomic groups.

Slimming creams, pills and teas, fad diets and other unregulated interventions are harmful, yet they are the easiest to access and quite affordable as opposed to gym memberships and consultations with nutritionists who can provide effective and long-lasting solutions for those who seek them.

To get to the root of how these unpopular methods became so widespread, one needs to understand where it all began.

The year is 1954 in post-war Britain: popular magazine Womans Own began advising its readers on different methods of losing weight, just months after the colonial power had abolished food rationing in the country.

MEDIA ROLEA three-part illustrated series in the October 1954 issue of the magazine, titled Trim your Figure, then instructed British housewives how to lose weight while performing simple household chores.

Being thin was in, and the magazine had established it as a standard of post-war femininity for British women.

As Kenya got closer to independence, advertisements in national newspapers such as the Nation began to reflect the same standard Womans Own had set in 1954.

Notably, the earliest record of weight-loss advertising in Kenya was in the Sunday Nation of October 7, 1962.

A pill called Lemslim, marketed to women, claimed that when used consistently, one could lose 60lb (about 27kg) in just four months.

The product was from Britain and the advertisement featured white women, hence one can infer that it targeted British women settling in Kenya to adopt the habits of their counterparts back home.

Either way, the paper was accessible to all who could read it, which means that such advertisements could have had an influence on Africans as well.

After independence, the frequency of the advertisements increased.

A tonic called Veinoids was marketed to women while Lemslim started including men in its advertisements.

Diets also became the order of the day. A look at the Sunday Nation issue of July 11, 1965 features a two-page spread on a diet, with input from a nutritionist.

The doctor suggested a method called scientific nibbling, which involved eating six small meals a day as opposed to the major three.

It also featured a chart titled TOO FAT? Check with this chart that helped readers figure out if their weight was within the acceptable limits based on the average body mass index.

Over the years, Kenyans have become more susceptible to lifestyle diseases due to their eating habits, a direct result of rapid economic growth.

According to a report in 2015 by the Ministry of Health, lifestyle diseases account for over 50 per cent of total hospital admissions and 55 per cent of hospital deaths.

These diseases include diabetes, cancer and other cardiovascular diseases linked to poor nutrition and physical inactivity.

You see, the reason the prevalence rates (of overweight/obesity) are very high is poor dietary habits. People know how they should eat, but over the years, (they) have decided to just eat what is available, explains Henry Ngethe, chairperson of the Nutrition Association of Kenya.

He attributes this to the high literacy rates, especially with the urban population, that leads to poor decision-making as opposed to their counterparts in rural areas when it comes to healthy eating.

This problem is further exacerbated by the accessibility and affordability of fast food as a readily available meal alternative.

Kenyans, it seems, love their junk food, and international fast-food chains as well as local ones have been keen to cash in on this profitable market.

The past 10 years have seen American franchises - KFC, Pizza Hut, Burger King, Dominos Pizza, Hardees and Coldstone Creamery - setting up shop in Nairobi.

Zimbabwean company Innscor Africa, however, still dominates the Kenyan market with its Chicken Inn, Pizza Inn and Galitos chains located at various petrol stations all over the country, with some staying open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Meals cost as low as Sh200 why wouldnt you want to buy one?

Recently, local food chain Java House Africa launched a new fast-food joint, Kukito, within the same price range as these others, a joint that has quickly become popular among young Kenyan consumers.

The case against getting fit through unsafe and unsustainable methods is one that has drawn the attention of people trying to make a difference by educating the public on eating better and exercising using their own bodies and histories as examples.

Popular body transformation coach Jane Mukami, also known as Fit Kenyan Girl, is one example.

In an interview on the K24 television show Talk Central in August 2018, Jane described her fitness journey as gradual she started with two years of fad diets and marathons with no results.

As she was just about to give up and get liposuction to shed the extra fat, she consulted a bodybuilding coach, who changed her mind-set on how to effectively lose weight.

She narrates how he questioned her eating habits in relation to her workouts, stating that what you eat has more effect on your body weight than anything else. The results were evident within a six-month period.

Word of her dramatic weight loss made the rounds on social media, and more Kenyans got curious about how she achieved it.

As of October 2017, when her Facebook pages were hacked and subsequently deleted, she had garnered about 550,000 followers.

The pages, 21 Days of Change and 10-Day Detox, have since been restored and made private.

However, testimonials on her website show how ordinary Kenyans have altered their bodies through a change in their eating habits.

The 10-day detox in particular is quite immersive, involving juicing and calorific measurement as one transitions into clean eating.

Testimonials show that people lose about four to 10kg within this period, with significant lifestyle improvements.

Does the detox work in the long run, though? Karen Muriuki, 23, recently tried it after witnessing her mothers transformation her mother lost five kilogrammes during the 10-day period.

Like many who were pleased with this change, she incorporated the programme as part of her lifestyle.

She does it about once every two months, says Muriuki, adding, Before starting the detox, Id been practising the 16/8 intermittent fasting for about a year or so. That meant that I fasted for 16 hours (10pm to 2pm) and my eating window was between 2pm and 10pm.

Intermittent fasting is a method of weight loss that has gained popularity all over the globe.

It is preferred because it does not mean you have to change what you eat, but when you eat it. Its proponents claim that it helps you get the most out of your meals.

In a previous interview with the Nation, Ngethe, the chairperson of the Nutrition Association of Kenya, warned against its effects, especially on womens bodies.

There are vitamins that you must take into your body every day, and if they are not provided, it might result in a certain deficiency, he said.

Karen says that although she managed to meet her weight target through this method, without monitoring what she ate, it was easy to regain a few kilogrammes.

She started at 65kg and lost five kilogrammes with this method, before regaining three. After this, she decided to try the 10-day detox.

I lost four kilogrammes, from 63kg to 59kg, she says. To maintain this weight, I can no longer have a heavy meal at night because the detox really helped improve my sleep. Also, I no longer wake up feeling bloated, she says.

It seems that more Kenyans are more conscious about their nutrition, though there is still a lot more to be done from both ends.

Ngethe illustrates the tug of war of demand and supply, which undermines healthy living.

The biggest challenge we have in the country right now is that the counties and national government do not have adequate nutritionists, he says.

And continues: If we look at the way the prevalence rates of non-communicable diseases are going up, this simply means that we need to adopt more preventive health (interventions) rather than the curative, which these governments are focusing on, he explains.

CHANGING ATTITUDESHe elaborates this by saying that the government focuses on solutions to these lifestyle diseases by investing in machines and other resources while neglecting the root of the problem.

They should also ensure that we have nutritionists at the community level, where everyone can easily access their services, he advises.

Kenyans are also getting more health-conscious, with pavements in upmarket and middle-class neighbourhoods dotted with men and women of all ages jogging or taking morning and evening walks to get their share of physical activity.

Their habits in relation to visiting nutritionists are also improving. However, Ngethe points out that a majority of those who seek this consultation are women.

Men often seek diet adjustments after the fact to manage the disease contracted, as opposed to seeking help as a preventive measure.

If you see a man coming (to consult), it means that there is usually something bothering them. The highest number of those that come are often suffering from a non-communicable disease, he tells the Nation.

Women are more conscious about their health than men. (They) have a number of challenges as opposed to men, he says.

RISKY TRENDSAs more Kenyans seek to improve their lives and feel more confident about their body image and health, a steady decline in the use of unsafe methods of weight loss should be expected.

That said, while losing weight is often linked to better health according to medical professionals, the pressure placed on those who are well within their limits to look a certain way by those who are unqualified to pass such judgment allows unsafe methods to thrive unchecked.

Improving accessibility to healthier interventions is imperative, but the conversation around overweight and obesity should stray from a point of ridicule to encourage healthier methods of staying in shape as a whole.

In countries like Mauritania, a practice called leblouh entails force-feeding girls from as young as five years to achieve a full figure and be attractive enough for marriage.

The girls are then married off from age 12. To the ancient Moors, ancestors of the present citizens of Mauritania, a fat wife was seen as a symbol of a mans wealth as it showed that he had the capacity to feed her while others perished in the midst of drought.

In an interview with The Guardian in March 2009, Aminetou Mint Ely, a womens rights activist, said, "In Mauritania, a woman's size indicates the amount of space she occupies in her husband's heart."

Closer to home, in Uganda, women in the Bakiga community were required to stay in seclusion for a month before marriage where they would be overfed to fatten them they were also taught how to be good wives.

In February 2019, the Ministry of Tourism there came under fire from womens rights activists when it unveiled a campaign that marketed the curvy bodies of Ugandan women as a tourist attraction.

I have lost the weight of my seven year old in a matter of months! – The Llanelli Herald

Posted: November 25, 2019 at 6:46 pm

Andrea Morris, 35, from Llanelli, was fed up of being the fat friend.

Ive been overweight as long as I can remember. After getting married I struggled to conceive. I had PCOS and hadnovulated in over a year. I was advised by my GP to lose weight so I did! I managed to lose 2 stone and I got pregnant, regaining the weight after giving birth. I repeated this cycle of losing weight to get pregnant three times and ended up heavier than Id ever been.

In January 2019, after seeing some photos of herself in a Christmas dress Andrea decided that enough was enough.

At the time I thought I looked nice in that dress but looking back on it I really disliked the way I looked. Not only that, I was fed up of being the fat mam at the school gates. I was self-conscious, had no self-esteem and no energy to chase my three children. I felt worried I was going to put myself in an early grave by piling on the weight.

On 3rdJanuary 2019 Andrea joined WW (formerly Weight Watchers) with WW Coach Catrin Morris in Llanelli, weighing 18 st 2.5lb.

My first workshop was fab! I came out feeling amazing. Catrin made me feel so empowered as she asked me what my why was to lose weight. Even though I knew why I needed to, I hadnt thought hard about it. It made me realise that I wanted to wear clothes that I liked, not just ones that covered my lumps and big bumps. I wanted to make my children proud and set a good example for them. I didnt want to die young from weight related illnesses.

The WW plan is based on a SmartPoints counting system, where all foods and drinks have a value. Each member has a personalised budget to spend on the foods that they love and fit in with their lifestyle, depending on which plan they are following; Blue, Green or Purple. Within each plan there zero point foods that dont need to be counted to help stretch the budget. The plan also incorporates mind-set and activity.

Before she knew it, Andrea, a busy mum of 3, was losing weight. As her weight dropped, her confidence grew which encouraged her to become more active and take up Couch25K and join exercise classes like Boogie Bounce.

I love the WW App, which is included with a subscription membership plan. The app makes sticking to budget easy. There is a barcode scanner to scan every day foods to find out the SmartPoints value. In addition to this there are 1000s of recipes which help me to plan my meals with ease. I can grab food on the go and still feel like Im in control knowing I can have zero pointed food if Ive used my entire SmartPoints budget.

Andrea finds eating out is absolutely doable with this plan.

Nandos is one of my favourite places to eat. I use the Restaurant section in the App to help me find the lowest point option. I usually choose butterfly chicken, macho peas and corn on the cob. A Subway chicken tikka sub for 6 points fits in perfectly too when Im on the go.

By October 2019, Andrea has lost an amazing 4 stone 5lb.

Recently, while I was sorting breakfast for the family, my 7 year old daughter weighed herself on our bathroom scales and announced proudly that she was 4 stone 5 lb. This was something that she hadnt done before as I dont encourage my children to weigh themselves. The WW ethos is that it is more than just the numbers on the scales and as such I dont worry about the numbers. It is more about how I feel, getting healthier and the changes in my behaviours to achieve this. What hit home was that this was how much weight I had lost!

For Andrea this weight loss and change in her outlook wouldnt have happened without the support of WW Coach Catrin and the weekly WW Workshop.

The workshops have helped me think about my relationship with food and encouraged me to become more active. Each week we explore a different technique to help us change our behaviours. Recent topics have been how to manage stress, how to sit less and eat more fruit and veg, all things that I need help and advice with. The group support is brilliant.

My life has changed for the better. Im happier and more outgoing. Simple things like taking the children to Legoland are so much more enjoyable as I dont have to worry that I wont fit in the rides! I have gained friends from attending the workshop and with my new found body confidence I have bought a dress that I would never have worn before for my friends wedding. Im not quite where I want to be yet but I can see the end is achievable. Im so motivated and watching the scales go down each week is amazing. Id recommend WW to everyone!

Anti-Obesity Day 2019: What Causes Childhood Obesity? Tips For Parents To Help Their Children Maintain A Healthy Weight – NDTV News

Posted: November 25, 2019 at 6:46 pm

Anti-obesity day is observed on every November 26 in various parts of the world. This day highlights the health hazards of obesity and various steps one can take to fight obesity. Obesity is affecting a huge population today from all age groups. Obese people may find it very difficult to lose weight and even more difficult to sustain weight loss. It has also become the major root cause of many serious health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiac problems, joint pains, sleeping disorders, infertility and increased chances of cancer. India has the second-highest number of obese children in the world after China, according to a study that has found that 14.4 million children in the country have excess weight.

Dr. Vaishakhi Rustagi, Consultant- Pediatric Endocrinology, explained, "researchers have found over two billion children and adults suffer from health problems related to being overweight or obese, and an increasing percentage of people die from these non-communicable health conditions. Not just genes but inactivity and faulty diet are some major reasons behind obesity.

The causes of obesity in children are the increasing portion sizes over the years. Lack of inadequate physical activity has also contributed significantly to obesity, causes being safety concerns, few chances for overweight youth to participate in sports, many local fast-food restaurants. Also, with the technology getting advanced, the average screen time of children is also increasing. On average adolescents, these days spend about 5-6 hours approximately on the screen which is about five times the recommended screen time. For each hour of screen view, prevalence of obesity increases by 2% in children."

Introducing Curis (NASDAQ:CRIS), The Stock That Tanked 90% – Simply Wall St

Posted: November 25, 2019 at 6:46 pm

Its nice to see the Curis, Inc. (NASDAQ:CRIS) share price up 15% in a week. But the last three years have seen a terrible decline. Indeed, the share price is down a whopping 90% in the last three years. So were relieved for long term holders to see a bit of uplift. The thing to think about is whether the business has really turned around.

While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isnt as important as health and happiness.

View our latest analysis for Curis

Curis isnt currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last three years, Curis saw its revenue grow by 9.7% per year, compound. Thats a pretty good rate of top-line growth. So its hard to believe the share price decline of 54% per year is due to the revenue. It could be that the losses were much larger than expected. If you buy into companies that lose money then you always risk losing money yourself. Just dont lose the lesson.

The graphic below depicts how revenue has changed over time.

This free interactive report on Curiss balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.

Were pleased to report that Curis shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 32% over one year. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 26% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. The Health Benefits Of Grass-fed Whey Protein – Net Newsledger

Posted: November 25, 2019 at 6:46 pm

Protein plays a very important role in your diet. Studies show that having a high-protein diet can provide many rewarding benefits for your health. Aside from supporting the functions of your muscles and organs, protein is also vital regarding your hair and skin health.

But the problem is that not many people consume the right amount of protein in their diets. Thus, making it difficult and challenging to look and feel your best. For this reason, many health professionals and nutritionists suggest consuming protein supplements because they are uncomplicated to take and can help you reach your daily protein goals quickly.

And when we talk about protein powders, whey is the most recommended option in the market. However, take note that not all whey protein products are the same. Various products can come from either grass-fed or grain-fed cows. Also, it might undergo different types of processing.

In this post, well walk you through the top health benefits of grass-fed whey protein. Read on!

This type of protein is a fast-digesting one that consists of at least 20 percent of all the protein in cows milk. The other 80 percent comes in the form of casein. Whey protein makes up all nine crucial amino acids. Also, it has a steady and stable amino acid profile.

Moreover, whey comes in dietary supplements and in powder form as well. Throughout processing, the majority of the lactose in milk is eliminated or abolished. Thus, making it an ideal option for those people with lactose intolerance that are less severe.

Whey is also one of the most rigorously or in-depth researched dietary supplements, with plenty of studies showing positive and rewarding effects from athletics to weight loss. As a dietary supplement, whey protein arrives in many forms.

First and foremost, it can come as a concentrate or isolate, each having different nutritional profiles. Normally, whey isolate is about 90 percent pure protein. Thus, it contains fewer fat and carbohydrates than whey concentrate, which can range from 30 to 80 percent protein.

Are you searching for a brand-new protein powder to include in your diet? If yes, then the grass-fed whey may be the solution for you. As weve mentioned, its among the most natural protein supplements you can find today. Read the jay robb whey protein reviews to know more about this product.

The following are the main reasons why you should try this type of protein:

Indeed, grass-fed whey protein provides many health benefits compared to grain-fed whey protein. Even though protein supplements might not be for everyone, grass-fed whey protein has plenty of benefits for anyone who wants to try it.

Grass-fed whey protein promotes strength or muscle gain by building blocks for increased muscle growth, releasing anabolic hormones that can promote muscle growth, because it is high in the amino acid leucine, and its fast absorption. However, the results might differ significantly between individuals.

Meaning, if you are already eating consuming dairy, eggs, fish, and meat, which are all high in protein, the health benefits of including whey in your diet will be minimal.

Steak and chips, fish dinner and beans on toast as youve never seen them before: The food bringing dignity to the elderly – The Telegraph

Posted: November 25, 2019 at 6:45 pm

If this plate of steak and chips looks a bit unusual, that is because it has been blended and remoulded to be safe for stroke, dementia and Parkinsons patients to eat.

The novel food has been designed to bring dignity and choice to the one in four elderly people in the UK who have problems swallowing.

Known as texture modified foods, the meals are made of real ingredients like meat, potatoes and vegetables which are blended into a smooth paste before being moulded into shape.

Experts say it means thousands of elderly people who are unable to swallow normal food can safely experience eating a proper" meal without the risk of choking on lumps - instead of having to rely on eating pureed, baby food meals which can be boring and undignified.

As many as one in four people aged over 76 in the UK suffers from difficulties swallowing, known medically as dysphagia.

The condition, which ranges in severity from being unable to swallow certain foods to being completely unable to swallow, is usually caused by other health problems which damage control of the mouth and throat.

Studies suggest dysphagia affects around 300,000 stroke patients in the UK, as well as up to one in five people with dementia and up to two thirds of later-stage Parkinsons patients.

Diabetes Prevention plan: Start eating avocadoes from today – TheHealthSite

Posted: November 25, 2019 at 6:45 pm

Avocado has already made a place for itself in the good book of nutritionists, thanks to its healthy monounsaturated fatty acids, vitamin D, vitamin E, and other major nutrients. Starting comes with a improving the function of your digestive system, alleviating depression and strengthening your vision to reducing your risk of osteoporosis and healthy cholesterol regulation, this stony fruit does it all for you. Now, it turns out that avocados can help in diabetes prevention too. According to a study published in the journal MolecularNutrition and Food Research, Avocation B (AvoB), a fat molecule found only in avocados, counters incomplete oxidation in skeletal muscle and thepancreas to reduce insulin resistance.Incomplete oxidation is a state where your body is unable to burn fats due to obesity or diabetes. Insulin resistance in diabetic patients doesnt allow their to properly remove glucose from the blood. Diabetes has been linked with increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.

Here are the details of the study, that were given to ANI, by the researchers.

For the first time, new research led by Prof. Paul Spagnuolo has shown how a compound found only in the fruit can inhibit cellular processes that normally lead to diabetes. In safety testing in humans, the team also found that the substance was absorbed into the blood with no adverse effects in the kidney, liver or muscle. Those complications can arise when mitochondria, or the energy powerhouses in the bodys cells, are unable to burn fatty acids completely. Normally, fatty acid oxidation allows the body to burn fats. Obesity or diabetes hinders that process, leading to incomplete oxidation. In their study, the team fed mice high-fat diets for eight weeks to induce obesity and insulin resistance. For the next five weeks, they added AvoB to the high-fat diets of half of the mice. The treated mice weighed significantly less than those in the control group, showing slower weight gain.

More important, said Spagnuolo, the treated mice showed greater insulin sensitivity, meaning that their bodies were able to absorb and burn blood glucose and improve their response to insulin.

In a human clinical study, AvoB given as a dietary supplement to participants eating a typical western diet was absorbed safely into their blood without affecting the kidney, liver or skeletal muscle. The team also saw reductions in weight in human subjects, although Spagnuolo said the result was not statistically significant. Having demonstrated its safety in humans, they plan to conduct clinical trials to test AvoBs efficacy in treating metabolic ailments in people. Spagnuolo said the safety trial helped the team to determine just how much AvoB to include in the supplement formulation.

The Fruitarian Diet: What You Need To Know – Daily Stock Dish

Posted: November 25, 2019 at 6:45 pm

Theres no one-size-fits-all plan: People interpret fruitarianism to suit their needs. Some fruitarians start the day by juicing 10 oranges. Others eat a banana-berry smoothie. Still others sit down to enjoy a plate of mangoes, melon, and almonds. A growing subset of vegans describe themselves as fruitarians, which may mean that up to 75 percent or more of what they eat is fruit.

Some people only eat raw organic fruit, while others allow dried or frozen fruit. Some fruitarians permit nuts and seeds, which grow on trees and can be categorized as fruits. Similarly, some may eat grains, which are considered to be the fruits of the plants which produce them. Some fruitarians round out their diets with leafy greens or other vegan-friendly foods. Others only eat sweet fruits.

Nutrition experts consider fruitarianism a fad diet that could cause malnutrition because so many food groups are left out of the diet, yet enthusiasts believe that the eating style works for them. Many fruitarians only eat home-prepared foods, to ensure that theyre not getting unwanted ingredients from restaurants. Heres what else fruitarians may experience:

Nibbling all day

Many fruitarians eat whenever theyre hungry, rather than consuming three meals. You may find you are grazing, says Beth Bluestone, RD, a registered dietitian at Cleveland Clinic Wellness. The calories are more quickly absorbed than from other foods. Youre going to burn through it fast.

Feeling bloated

The fiber and natural sugars in fruit may cause gassiness and bloating. Some people have trouble digesting large quantities of fructose, Bluestone says. It can cause abdominal discomfort, diarrhea. Tracy Morris, Fitbits nutritionist adds, Still, the huge amount of fruit required to meet your daily calorie needs is likely to cause some degree of bloating for most people.

Incorporating fats

A well-balanced diet contains fats, protein, and carbohydrates. Fruit is comprised mainly of carbohydrates, but fruitarians can get fat from avocados, nuts, and seeds. Plus, nuts and seeds may supply essential fatty acids. One [essential fatty acid] in particular is omega 3s, Bluestone says. Thats something that we can get from a plant source, but it depends if we are having nuts and seeds in the diet or not. Flaxseeds and walnuts, are a great source of omega 3s.

Seeking protein

It may be extremely difficult for fruitarians to get enough protein, although nuts, seeds, and grains can be valuable sources. I would even recommend fruitarians include some eggs, beans, or even steak once in a while, says Bart Wolbers, researcher at Nature Builds Health.

Vegans on a vegetable-rich can find it tricky to meet their protein needs if they arent including legumes or nuts and seeds-the fruitarian diet is extremely low in protein. We need essential amino acids, the building blocks of , to help to build and repair your muscles, organs, skin, blood, and to make different chemicals, like hormones, in your body. Fruit, although high in essential nutrients like fiber and vitamin C, isnt a source of protein. Were not able to meet all those building blocks of those different essential amino acids when your diet is that highly restricted, says Bluestone.

Considering supplements

Fruit contains fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants but is missing many essential nutrients that you need. People who follow this diet can be at a significantly increased risk of deficiencies in iron, protein, vitamin D, calcium, zinc, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12, says Amanda A. Kostro Miller, RD, LDN, who serves on the advisory board for .

Strict fruitarians may not want to take supplements. Protein supplements that are from a plant source, such as soy or pea protein would not fall into the fruitarian category, and thats where it becomes challenging, Bluestone says.

Rounding out the diet

Broadening your interpretation beyond sweet fruit will make the diet more balanced, healthier, and sustainable. Morris says, Experts around the world agree we should all be and less animal products-its better for our health and its better for the planet-but theres no need to limit yourself to only fruit. Why eliminate whole food groups which have been shown to improve health and add years to your life? Filling your plate with foods like vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds is a smart eating strategy.

Signs the diets hurting your health

Fruitarianism isnt for everyone. Ashton Kutcher made headlines in 2013 when he was hospitalized after following the diet. If you feel hungry constantly, its time to abandon the plan. Symptoms such as low energy levels, confusion, tiredness, hair loss, hair thinning, muscle wasting, slow healing, extreme weight loss, or getting sick easier, says Bluestone, are signs its time to ditch the diet.

How to safely eat a fruit-heavy diet

If youre intrigued by the idea of subsisting mainly on fruits, ask a registered dietitian how to do it safely. The pubs in North Wales, Chester and Liverpool giving drivers free soft drinks this Christmas – Daily Post

Posted: November 25, 2019 at 6:45 pm

Christmas is the time of year where you can eat and drink as much as you like without feeling guilty and it's Christmas is the only excuse you need.

But while its nice to get merry and have a drink, or two, at the pub, its important to keep the roads safe during the festive period.

When consuming alcohol you should always drink responsibly, ensuring you have a way to get home safely, whether thats a taxi, walking or using a designated driver.

But being the responsible one can sometimes feel like youre missing out, so Greene King pubs have teamed up with Coca-Cola to launch their annual Christmas anti-drink drive campaign.

To mark 10 years of the campaign - and to make the festive period a little more enjoyable for the designated drivers taking one for the team - this year they have also teamed up with Heineken.

The campaign is offering free soft drinks, including Coke and Diet Coke, Appletiser or an alcohol-free bottle of Heineken to drivers.

All you have to do is show your keys to the bar staff at any Greene King run pub in North Wales when you buy your first soft drink, and theyll give you some vouchers for a free second drink.

There are five Greene King run pubs in North Wales where you can take advantage of this until January 1:

However, if you're heading further afield for you Christmas do, these are some other noteworthy participating pubs:

Chester:

Liverpool:

Paul Robertson, associate director, On-Premise at Coca-Cola European Partners GB, said: Wed like to thank Greene King for partnering with us for the last 10 years on the Designated Driver campaign and continuing to evolve the platform to ensure it remains relevant to todays consumers.

Greene King should be applauded for its continued leadership in helping to promote responsible drinking and embracing the role soft drinks can play across its estate, especially on the lead up to Christmas. Heres to another 10 years of partnership.

Phil Thomas, Chief Commercial Officer at Greene King, added: As a leading pub company, we have an important role to play in helping to promote responsible drinking, and we have given away around a quarter of a million free Coca-Cola products over the past decade as part of the Designated Driver campaign.

Cindy Tervoort, Marketing Director, HEINEKEN, said: "As many people unite in bars across the country during the Christmas party season, we feel its important to offer a choice for everyone at this time of year whilst also encouraging people to be safe on the roads.

Live blog: Cyclist ‘nearly knocked off’ in punishment pass by another cyclist; Tim Wellens takes a tumble during Final Breakaway Part 2; Teen given…

The 800-mile route from Derbyshire to Cape Wrath developed by Cycling UK has picked up its first award a little over two months after officially launching, picking up the gong atiNewsNational Staycation Awards.

Duncan Dollimore, Cycling UKs head of campaigns said, At Cycling UK were passionate about both encouraging and enabling more people to enjoy the UKs breathtaking countryside, so its great to see our Great North Trail recognised by the Staycation Awards.

The off-road cycling community has been calling for joined up and long-distance routes, which is why Cycling UK developed and launched the Great North Trail. Its an 800- mile trail from Derbyshire to the northern coasts of Scotland, connecting existing off-road routes with quiet lanes to create an iconic largely off-road route across some of northern England and Scotlands most stunning landscapes.

This is all despite Cycling UK admitting the route still"isn't perfect", and say there is an ongoing process in some areas of the trail to negotiate permissive access. This is to designate ideal sections as bridleways rather than footpaths to avoid any on-road sections for cyclistswhere possible.
