Sorry, These 11 Wellness Trends Are Out (and These 4 Are Officially In) – Yahoo Lifestyle

Posted: November 18, 2019 at 10:45 am

Wanting to get healthy should never be considered a "trend," but sometimes new concepts or ideas in the wellness space can seem a bit unbelievable or far-fetched. And with changing lifestyles and new research, we just might find once-popular wellness trends could be seen as outdated, unsafe, or ineffective.

To figure out which trends call for some caution, we asked fitness and wellness experts and influencers for their opinions on the fads they regret taking part in or that they think are on the way out. Some even shared the new wellness trends to keep on our radars, too.

As a note, we know wellness isn't one-size-fits-all, and we're not trying to shame people here, nor set a mandate. A doctor or medical professional is always the best resource to find out what will work for you.

One of our experts, Claire Fountain of Trill Yoga, put it best: "Now, I'm not in the business of making people feel bad about themselves or their choices in 'wellness.' There are many paths to fitness and health, as you define it. So even if I find something lame, doesn't mean someone else doesn't love it and find goodness in it. And I think as long as we stay away from gimmicks, diet culture disguised as wellness, and the massive privilege in most 'wellness' we will all be okay."

So read these opinions below, but make your own decision about your health. It's your body, after all!

"CBD that is not regulated, and being mass marketed really has to go. It supposedly is in everything, and yet it's not when you actually do the research on the products. On top of that, do we really need it in everything? Do you even know how itmight help you or be of use in your life?" Claire Fountain,Trill Yoga

Our take? We've written about thebenefits of CBDand what to watch out for(and our editors do have favorite products), but the product market iscurrently unregulated. In fact, the FDA held itsfirst CBD hearing on May 31, so it may take some time to get more answers. Do your research on what you buy and consult with your doctor before you stock up on everything CBD.

This"trend" was pretty much unanimous with our experts and influencers. Here's what they had to say:

"I regret taking part in any restrictive diet in the past and feeling guilty or not good enough for not following or staying on track with the latest trendy diet, from Paleo to sugar-free to keto to Whole30. True, I saw short-term results, but it wasnt sustainable and left me disconnected from the people around me. I have realized our bodies are all different; our nutritional needs and how we metabolize foods are unique to our bodies and lifestyle choices. One size does not fit all when it comes to diets." Katherine Chen, @intentionally_kat

"I spent years destroying my body trying every crazy restrictive diet there is. So many of them are marketed as 'healthy,' but at the end of the day, any time you are restricting entire food groups or essential macro and micronutrients from your diet, it's nothealthy. When I finally lost 45 pounds, it was only because I created a healthy, balanceddiet for myself, and that's the only reason I've been able to keep the weight off for eight years and continue to get stronger each day." Katie Dunlop, Love Sweat Fitness

"If you follow me, you know I want to get rid of the obsession with everything, from food to body to 'wellness.' This goes for keto, poorly informed vegan diets, gluten-free when you don't truly have a gluten intolerance or allergy, and anything else that is sold as 'healthy' but is really just obsession and control by any other name. We don't need a cleanse from anything. Our bodies and organs will figure it out, as long as we keep giving it nutrient-dense food and water (plus sleep, plus breathing, etc.)." Fountain

Sure, we just went over restrictive diets, but this phenomenon that took the wellness community (and beyond) by storm was called out by almost all of our experts, so we thought it deserved its own spot on the list. Our take? We found that goingketo is different for everyone, so we might sound like a broken record at this point, but discuss with your doctor first if it's right for you.

"While a properly executed keto meal plan can do wonders for some, it's absolutely not the right diet for everyone. Every single body is so unique, and we all require completely different foods to feel our best. Extremely low levels of carbohydrates can create excess stress on our systems, and potentially exacerbate blood sugar imbalances, hormonal issues, and chronic stress levels. The takeaway: There is no such thing as a perfect diet, or one-size-fits-all when it comes to food!" Hannah Schmitt, @wholisticallyhannah_

"I fully regret taking part in the keto craze, and I hope to see it move on out! Like most people, I read about all of keto's wild effects. It was a SURE WAY to lose weight, feel younger, healthier, etc. And given my diet was already pretty low-carb, it seemed pretty easy. But I found two major problems with the diet:

"One, it totally changed my relationship with food. Food was no longer meant to be enjoyed or nourished, it was only eaten if it fit into my day's calculation. I soon realized the diet was NOT sustainable. I was turning down social plans so I could stick to my diet, and if I accidentally went over on my macros, I felt terrible about it. And two, women need carbs for hormone and thyroid balance. I lost my period for months during and following my keto diet.

"The worst part of the diet was when I 'broke keto.' It took me months to indulge in the foods I once enjoyed without feeling guilty about it. This kind of relationship with food and health was SO unhealthy physically and mentally. I do believe there are people who benefit from the diet, but I am sad to see the extremes it can take people to." Nicole Cogan, @nobread

"How these are even still a thing is beyond me. Major celebrities and influencers endorsing skinny teas and things like lollipops that claim to help you shed pounds is super irresponsible and truly just complete BS. Luckily, I feel like most people are starting to realize it and aren't buying into the hype anymore." Dunlop

"Can we please stop this? It's not a godsend to 'detox' your life. We don't need to detox our lives anyway. It's trendy and might not be so great for your insides or your teeth. Save your money for whole foods and therapy." Fountain

There are a lot of different beliefs from experts about what activated charcoal can do for you, but again, it all depends on the individual, so you'll need to talk to your doctor. When we spoke to nutritionist Samantha Franceschini, MS, she offered up some advice: "Activated charcoal when consulting with a health practitioner can be very beneficial to aid in digestion and remove toxins from the body." She also recommends trying chlorella as an alternative.

Micro Ingredients Organic Chlorella Tablet ($27)

"Your body does not burn enough calories to produce sweat to make any drastic change to adipose tissue. All that you are losing is water, and this increases the potential for dehydration. This can be super dangerous if you don't drink enough water. Hence the bad headaches you may experience!" Keely Ahrold,@keelya

Our take? Proceed with caution when you go to a heated workout class, and we agree with Keely: Don't expect to lose a lot of weight from one. There are some benefits to ahot yoga class or something similar, though. The heat can make you more flexible, and sweating it out can help you release toxins. If you do decide to head to a class, make sure you hydrate and prep before.

"Fasting is another technique that can be very supportive for certain people and very destructive to others. Blood sugar imbalances, stress load, and where a woman is in her menstrual cycle are all important factors to look at before deciding if fasting is suitable." Schmitt

Our take? There isresearch that intermittent fasting can be beneficial for some people. But we agree with Schmitt: Listen to your body, and speak to your doctor before you give it a try.

No, don't throw out your cartons of almond/oat/cashew milk just yet. Just read the labels carefully, as Claire Fountain explains:

"So many trendy milks are mostly sugar. It's fine if you'd like to have a creamy substance to enjoy, but I would not look to alternative milks as nutrient-dense foodstuffs, or vilify dairy if you enjoy it." Fountain

"Working from a state of 'hustle.'The idea of continuously grinding to achieve goals became super trendy over the last couple of years. I went through a period of continuously pushing myself, both mentally and physically. I thought it was glamorous to always be busy and felt rewarded for doing so. But in the end, I was left chronically stressed, burned-out, uninspired, and completely exhausted. Now, I choose to operate from a place of intuition, balance, and flow. I listen to my body and honor the times I need to rest." Schmitt

Our thoughts? We'd never begrudge anyone for working hard. In fact, we are big advocates of it. But thepressure to hustle sometimes pushes us beyond our limits, which can lead to burnout. Take some moments throughout your day, or week, to check in with yourself and leave some room for self-care.

"Believing big weights will make you bulkyit's trendy now in dance cardio and many other classes to see no more than three- or five-pound weights for women. Ladies, one more time, heavy weights will NOT make you bulky. Weight lifting for women remains one of the best ways women can feel confident, shape, and tone their bodies and create longevity that is healthy. Not to mention weight-bearing exercise help with bone density. (And if you need to see this to believe it, come hang with me on @cbquality. I lift more than most men weigh and have yet to be 'bulky.')" Fountain

Girlfriend Collective High Waist Full Length Leggings ($68)

"Everything from fit teas to adaptogens to CBD There are a lot of claims being made that use the power of words and marketing to get us to buy their products. I say look for transparency and brands that are built around science and research, when possible." Fountain

We couldn't have said it better.

We also asked our group of experts and influencers to share emerging wellness trends that they're excited about. Here's what they had to say:

"I'm absolutely in love with the idea of structuring your life around your menstrual cycle. This includes the foods we eat, the exercise we partake in, and the way we schedule our days. I have a feeling this practice is going to continue gaining popularity within the next year." Schmitt

"The days of squatting 150 pounds just to say you did are over. When it comes to women's fitness, I see more and more of a trend toward functional fitness. This means more workouts that are focused on training your muscle groups to work together and improve your performance in daily tasks. It's super unlikely you'll need to squat a person anytime soon, but you definitely need the strength, mobility, and endurance to get off the floor and reach overhead on the regular." Dunlop

Joylab High Neck Seamless Bra ($20)

"Eating whole foods, drinking water, spending time outside, getting enough sleep, and making space to just be. In an already complex and busy world, there's no need to overcomplicate things. I have a feeling that our society will continue to develop a new and greater appreciation for slow and simple living." Schmitt

"Looking ahead, I think we are going to hear more people work their way towards intuitive eating and creating SUSTAINABLE eating and lifestyle habits rather than counting on a 30-/60-/90-day cleanse or eating plan. I also think meditation and sound healing will find a bigger place at home, in school, and in corporate wellness. No longer is meditation a hippie-dippie experience but, I believe, a critical element in stress and anxiety management for both grown-ups and kids alike! I've incorporated sound healing music into our bedtime routine for myself and my son. It has worked wonders in getting us off to sleep by lowering BPMand any lingering bedtime stress or anxiety." Heres Yet Another Reason To Break Your Diet Coke Habit – British Vogue

Posted: November 18, 2019 at 10:45 am

Youre probably aware that your Diet Coke habit isnt particularly healthy, not least because of all the artificial chemicals youre consuming. But what about the impact its having on the environment? A recent study by Break Free From Plastic named Coca-Cola as the worlds largest plastic polluter for the second year running. The drinks company was responsible for six per cent of the branded plastic found in the global audit more than the next three top global polluters, Nestl, PepsiCo and Mondelz, combined.

This report highlights just how big the problem is and how much more work we need to do to make sure that were not polluting the ocean environment, Libby Peake, senior policy advisor at environmental think tank Green Alliance, tells Vogue.

Coca-Cola has set a goal to recover 100 per cent of its cans and bottles by 2030. A spokesperson for the company states: Any time our packaging ends up in our oceans or anywhere that it doesnt belong is unacceptable to us. In partnership with others, we are working to address this critical global issue, both to help turn off the tap in terms of plastic waste entering our oceans and to help clean up the existing pollution.

However, critics say companies such as Coca-Cola need to tackle the root cause of the issue and fast. Corporations need to reduce their plastic footprint and start investing in refill and reuse as the only way to address the plastic pollution crisis, comments Shilpi Chhotray, senior communications manager at Break Free From Plastic.

Although Coca-Cola says its plastic bottles are 100 per cent recyclable, this requires the bottles to be disposed of properly and doesnt take into account the limitations of the recycling process. In fact, a 2017 study found that only nine per cent of the plastic ever made has been recycled. We consider recycling to be a false solution [for] companies to be able to justify this addiction to single-use packaging, says Chhotray.

Being recyclable is one thing, [but] being recycled is an entirely different thing, adds Peake. Theres only so much control these companies exert once the packaging has left their chain of custody. For a long time, [there have been calls] for more government intervention and business contributions to make sure that material is actually recycled.

Meanwhile, Coca-Cola has set an aim of using 50 per cent of recycled material in all its primary packaging by 2030, while Pepsi has committed to using 25 per cent recycled content in its plastic packaging by 2025. But using recycled material does not in itself solve current limitations when it comes to recycling. Using more recycled content is important where it needs to be used, but its not the wholesale solution we need to see, Peake says.

Aluminium cans and glass bottles are often considered to be more eco-friendly alternatives to plastic, but they too have a notable impact on the environment. Aluminium cans, which are lined with plastic, are in theory completely recyclable, but only have a recycling rate of 75 per cent in Europe. The production of virgin aluminium cans leads to up to three times more carbon emissions compared to plastic bottles, according to UK government figures, while mining the aluminium produces large amounts of toxic waste.

Although manufacturing glass leads to lower carbon emissions, transporting glass bottles produces more emissions than aluminium or plastic as they are much heavier. Meanwhile, bioplastics which are made from plant-based materials and tend to be compostable still need to be disposed of properly.

There's so much awareness of the harm caused by plastic pollution, but that awareness isnt yet extending to other single-use items, Peake says. Its really important that people realise all materials have environmental consequences at various stages of their life cycle.

Ultimately, we need to consume less single-use packaging overall and move towards reusable options. Its not a case of looking for a simple substitution [to plastic], Peake comments. Its thinking more carefully about how we use resources and not thinking that any one substance is going to allow us to keep consuming infinitely in this throwaway culture.

We want corporations to show true leadership [and] make significant investments towards refillable and reusable alternatives, adds Chhotray. Consumers can also do their bit to help. [Its] all about holding corporations accountable, she continues. Tag brands on social media, write to them and say, Weve had enough.

Electric cars part of a solution for a cleaner electric grid The Review – University of Delaware Review

Posted: November 18, 2019 at 10:45 am

Louis Mason/THEREVIEWThe science of electric cars are a potential saving grace to cut out greenhouse gas emissions, and the university is receiving more and more requests to accommodate such vehicles each year.

BY RACHEL SAWICKISenior Reporter

Carbon emissions from transportation make up nearly one-third of the overall greenhouse gas pollution in the United States. The science of electric cars are a potential saving grace to cut out these emissions, and the university is receiving more and more requests to accommodate such vehicles each year.

There are currently 10 charging stations scattered around the universitys campus, including one behind Hullihen Hall and one in the Perkins Garage, both of which require a permit or are pay-by-plate.

McKay Jenkins, an English and journalism professor, owns a Prius Hybrid. He drives an hour from Baltimore every day, and his car goes 25 miles on a full charge before switching over to gas. By the time Jenkins arrives at school, he needs a place to charge his car. But more often than not, the spaces around campus that have a charging station are already occupied.

How frustrating is it to have an electric car and have nowhere to plug it in? Jenkins said.

A lack of charging stations is not the only reason that people may be deterred from buying an electric vehicle. Mike Anderson, a junior communication interest major, owns a 2007 Ford F-250, which gets about 14 miles per gallon. But, his family often takes camping, hiking and boating trips, where his truck comes in handy as a heavy-duty vehicle able to handle dragging along their boat and outdoor supplies. However, most electric vehicles made today are small sedan models.

Id be totally down for having an electric vehicle, Anderson said. If the technology is there and I can do what I need to do with it, I have no issue with it being electric instead of gas.

Toyota, the manufacturer behind the hybrid Prius, released a hybrid pickup in 2018, but the wait for a fully-electric truck wont be long for truck owners like Anderson. The popular electric car manufacturer, Tesla, is set to unveil their electric pickup model, the Cybertruck, on Nov. 21 on the last day of the Los Angeles Auto Show. Ford could however become a serious competitor for Tesla. Ford also announced in 2018 that a fully-electric truck was in the works and will be released in 2021.

Some car companies are pledging to produce only electric vehicles in an effort to reduce the amount of carbon emissions produced. Volvo released its first electric vehicle this year, the XC40 Recharge, while also pledging to produce more. By 2025, Volvos ambition is to sell 50% purely electric and 50% hybrid vehicles.

While electric vehicles would eliminate the need for gasoline and cut out greenhouse gas emissions produced by it, Jenkins says the true solution is deeper than that.

The question is wheres the electricity [that would charge your car] coming from? Jenkins said. Youve got to also make sure that the source of the electricity is a clean source. Because the last thing we need to do is be powering our cars with coal, which is literally what would happen if you had a coal fired electricity plant. So if you take cars off a gasoline diet and you put them on a coal diet thats not going to help with climate.

Willett Kempton, university professor and research director for the universitys Center for Carbon-free Power Integration, agreed that until the entire electrical grid in the United States is clean, electric vehicles themselves will not eliminate the emissions issue.

Kempton is one scientist working on that solution. Earlier this year he pioneered the invention of V2G technology, which uses the batteries from electric cars to power the electric grid. Kempton describes the grid as a network similar to the internet, where every point of power is connected through a winding map of power lines. He says that the power from an electric car battery could power an entire household for 40 hours. Any excess power would be sent throughout the grid for neighboring electricity users.

The grid is this interconnected system which is great because it means if one thing fails, other things will make up for it, Kempton said. It also means that I can have storage in my garage, thats helpful to the entire region.

Kempton said that in New Castle County, in order to obtain a contract that grants access to the grid, only 12 participants were needed to start contributing. However, the more cars that are contributing to the grid, the more effective the technology will be.

More interconnection means more reliability, Kempton said.

Kempton says that the grid is getting cleaner as well. The International Energy Agency released their 2019 Offshore Wind Outlook on Nov. 13. It says that the global offshore wind capacity is on track to increase 15-fold and may become a $1 trillion industry in the next two decades.

Theyre building offshore wind farms now that are big enough to run a third of Delaware, Kempton said. Three of those, and youve displaced all the electricity in the state.

The Delaware coast could be expecting some wind farms soon. The Danish wind company, rsted, announced in September that they plan to install the worlds largest wind turbines 15 to 20 miles off the coast of Delawares beaches. Each turbine would stand 853 feet tall and each blade will be longer than a football field.

Delaware supports renewable energy through the Green Energy Program, which provides grant funding to renewable energy projects through the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.

Hawks fall behind early in loss to Lakers – Atlanta Journal Constitution

Posted: November 18, 2019 at 10:44 am

LOS ANGELES

The Hawks (4-9) ended their West Coast road trip with a 122-101 loss to the Lakers (11-2) Sunday at the Staples Center.

Below are some takeaways from the loss:

1. A day after the Hawks quickly fell in a 17-point hole and lost to the Clippers by 49, the loss to the Lakers looked like it would be a similar tale early on. Atlanta quickly got in a 15-point hole and later trailed 30-6 with 4:32 still to play in the first quarter. This one stayed at least a little more competitive, with the Hawks fighting their way back to make it a 10-point game in the third quarter outscoring the Lakers 36-27 in that period after a put-back layup by Evan Turner. But it still got out of hand in the fourth, with back-to-back 3s by Kyle Kuzma giving L.A. a 102-82 lead with just over nine minutes to go.

It was good to see our guys fight a little bit tonight, Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce said. What a crazy start to the game that was, I think 30-6 we were down. To be down 12 at the quarter, just a little bit of fight from our guys, which was important. Two tough teams on a back-to-back, two teams that played extremely well, even for their standards.

2. With LeBron James on the bench for the last 2:46 of the first quarter and to start the second, the Hawks cut a 25-point deficit to 10. James checked back in at the 8:26 mark of the second and the Lakers quickly got back to their dominant pace, leading by 28 at halftime. James was a plus-41 at halftime. He finished with 33 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists, making 6 of 10 3-point attempts.

3.Hawks guard Trae Young registered his sixth 30-point game of the season, finishing with 31 points, seven assists and two steals, though he did add a season-high eight turnovers. Young continues to face most of the heat from opponents defenses.

The Hawks shot 43% from the field and made eight 3s compared to the Lakers 52.8% from the field with 15 3s.

Were not shooting well, extremely well as a team, Pierce said. Hes feeling everyones double teams and hits and hes getting hit and pressured. A lot of times, thats how he ends up with some of the turnovers, just an enormous amount of pressure.

4. This loss wraps up the Hawks West Coast trip. They went 1-4, losing to Portland in overtime, beating Denver behind 42 points from Young and losing three straight to the Suns, Clippers and Lakers. They fall to 4-9 on the season and it doesnt get easier anytime soon, with a home game against Milwaukee and reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo looming Wednesday.

We knew, coming out West for a five-game trip, as a young team, and the caliber of opponents we were playing, was going to be tough, Pierce said. We snuck one (against Denver), we drop one in Portland that we felt we probably could have had, and we go against two elite teams in our league. Glad its over. Glad we got this trip out of the way early. But we have a lot of work to do.

5. The Hawks had a much better second half than first half, and a lot of that can be attributed to solid performances by rookies DeAndre Hunter and Cam Reddish. (Both were held scoreless in the first half. )

In addition to carrying their weight defensively, Hunter went 4 for 4 from the field in the second half, scoring two 3-point attempts. Hunter contributed 11 points and three assists.

Reddish went 5 for 10, making 1 of 4 3s. Reddish finished with 13 points and three steals.

7 (the amount of Lakers players who finished with double-digit points in LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Danny Green, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Kyle Kuzma, Rajon Rondo and Alex Caruso)

A well-conditioned athlete, probably the greatest athlete weve ever seen. At the top of his game. I dont care how old he is. Hes at the top of his game right now. (Pierce on facing James, who is 34)

Why Weworks Collapse Is A Moment Of Reckoning For Softbank – Forbes

Posted: November 18, 2019 at 10:44 am

TOKYO, JAPAN - NOVEMBER 06: SoftBank Group Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Masayoshi Son ... [+] arrives for a press conference on November 6, 2019 in Tokyo, Japan. SoftBank reported its second-quarter earnings result posting a 704 billion yen ($6.46 billion) loss for the July-September period. (Photo by Tomohiro Ohsumi/Getty Images)

Softbank's rescue ofWeWork, an American commercial real estate company founded in 2010, avoided a near term liquidity meltdown. However, the holding company has not addressed any of the structural concerns in WeWork's business model. WeWork has a high level of debt in its balance sheet. The high degree of debt subjected the business to a great deal of risk. Hence the firm's only route to survival was exponential growth. Now Softbank, with its bailout offer, has added even more debt in WeWork's balance sheet. This action can further restraint WeWork's growth.

It has been a few weeks sinceWeWork IPO collapsedunder the weight of its pricing inconsistencies. WeWork was a growth machine with tremendous operating and financial leverage, where a blunder could very quickly tip them into insolvency. After WeWork filed to go public in August, investorsrailed againstits unproven business model, mounting losses, limited governance, and its founder Adam Neumann's questionable conduct. As a result, the company discontinued its IPO, and Neumann stepped down. This setback left the company in acash crunch, as WeWork was relying on the IPO to provide $3 billion in capital to cover its near-term needs. After the IPO failure, Softbank emerged as the protector, funding an additional $8 billion in the company, and exercising a much more significant stake in its equity.Softbank offered a lifeline, with three provisions to it:

Corporate Redemption or Sunk cost fallacy

Softbank is the biggest investor in WeWork and financed $7.5 billion in the company during the IPO. The holding company had also funded the most recent round of capital, at a pricing of $47 billion. Softbank had no alternative since, without an infusion of capital, WeWork was worth nothing.

In the connection of Softbank's WeWork investment, the holding company is financing $8 billion in WeWork, not because it thinks that it can earn more than that amount in incremental value from future cash flows, but because it had financed $7.5 billion in the past. That looks like a classic case of throwing good money after bad. Softbank is making a typical rookie error by yielding to the sunk cost fallacy and assuming that the additional investments will finally recover previous losses.

Accounting Fair Value

Fair value accounting provides accountants with a way to update the balance sheet, to reflect real-world changes and developments, and make it more valuable to investors. In Softbank's latest earnings report, the company had written down its WeWork investment by $4.6 billionand reported a hefty loss for the quarter. The write-down was a reaction to the drop in the pricing of the WeWork's equity from the $47 billion before the IPO to $8 billion after the IPO implosion. Softbank was fixing the pricing, at both the $47 billion pre-IPO, and the $8 billion, post-collapse. There is nothing concrete in any of Softbank's copious press releases to verify these numbers. Hence the fair value accounting in WeWork's case is a delayed response to a pricing adjustment and is not a value reassessment.

Softbank: The WeWork Effect

Softbank is a holding company for investments in other companies, and many of Softbank's most recent ventures have been in growing, private businesses like WeWork. The holding company's investment approach is to issue enormous funds into its target companies that they were practically overflowing in the capital; this would provide the companies, to overwhelm their competitors and achieve supremacy in their markets. Softbank finance enterprises that provide goods and services for lower than their cost. The holding company's strategy was that in the future, they would be able to raise prices to cover their losses. The problem with this strategy is that, often, a time arrives when building a company out of selling the products at a loss no longer works. In the case of Amazon, the strategy worked, and the company now holds a de-facto monopoly on online retail, but for WeWork, the approach was a disaster.

Softbank prices their investments in its financials based on recent VC funding rounds. As WeWork venture has unwound, Softbank has lost more than $15 billion in value since its IPO announcement. After WeWork's debacle, investors are cautious about trusting VC pricing. Softbank was the largest investor at both the WeWork and Uber two of the most high-profile private companies in recent years that also had notable issues with the founder's management and governance. The holding firm's standing as a company skilled at selecting the winners of the disruption game has been maligned, at least for the moment and perhaps irreparably. The easiest way to measure how investor perceptions have changed is to compare the market capitalization of Softbank to its book value, a significant proportion of which indicates its holdings, marked to market. The price to book ratio has experienced a sharp correction, with the market capitalization at 123% of the book value of equity in November 2019. The holding company is trading at a deep discount to its net assets, which include a $ 110 billion stake in Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. WeWork fiasco casts severe doubt on Softbank's investment strategy and on its hopes for raising a second $100 billion technology investment fund.

Boxing bible Ring Magazine has now seen fit to adorn Alvarez with another accolade less than two weeks after Lomachenko was crowned King of the Ring.

Familiar faces behind the Ukrainian include Terence Crawford, who will be hoping another winning performance in his final fight of the year will spearhead him back into the top three.

Here is Ring Magazines top ten boxers...

Mexican hero Saul Alvarez has quickly taken over as boxings biggest star since former foe Mayweather walked away from the sport.

With only a sole loss - to Mayweather in 2013 aged 23 - "Canelo" has gone on to rule the super-welterweight and middleweight divisions as well as winning a world title at super-middleweight.

However, a controversial draw and contentious win against rival Gennady Golovkin had doubters questioning Canelos invincibility with a trilogy bout yet to take place.

Snubbing GGG to move up to 175lbs, a win over KO king Kovalev to become a four-weight champion and actively ruling three divisions has seen him rise to the P4P top.

10

Leaving the amateur game with a record of 396-1 - with the one loss to Albert Selimov later avenged - the simple question was could the boxing maestro transcend his skill-set to 12 rounds.

But after being roughed up by Orlando Salido for the WBO featherweight title in his second pro fight, Loma has not suffered a blip since, becoming the quickest three-weight world champion in history.

In just 14 bouts, the 31-year-old has won four world belts and earned scalps such as Gary Russell Jr, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Jorge Linares and most recently Britains Campbell.

Loma has already named dangerous hitter Naoya Inoue, powerhouse Gervonta Davis and rising star Devin Haney on his wishlist of 2020 opponents.

10

A monstrous puncher, Inoue is working his way up the divisions and remaining the most powerful man in the ring.

Having begun his career at 108lbs the Japanese star went on to claim titles at super-flyweight, junior-bantamweight champion and bantamweight.

Unbeaten Inoue recently dared to call out Lomachenko for a featherweight bout - having scored 16 KOs in his 18 wins.

The heavy-handed 26-year-old moves up to third after being crowned the World Boxing Super Series champion at bantamweight following his points victory over Nonito Donaire.

10

Possibly the best switch-hitter in the game right now, Crawford has the ability to overwhelm any foe with his combination punching.

The American has won world titles at lightweight, super-lightweight and currently reigns as WBO welterweight king - having held undisputed gold at 140lbs.

Though unlike others on this list, Crawford is yet to beat a high-profile name - but that could change if he secures a welterweight unification bout.

He faces little-known Egidijus Kavaliauskas on December 14, but insists next year he will go after the best in the 147lbs division after calling out countrymen Errol Spence Jr.

10

Usyk reigned as undisputed cruiserweight king having won the WBSS, and has now stamped his authority at heavyweight following a high-profile win against Tony Bellew.

The Ukrainian maestro made a successful debut after making the step up when he stopped replacement opponent Chazz Witherspoon in seven rounds.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has already hinted the 32-year-old could be in line to challenge for the WBO heavyweight title after securing a No1 spot with the governing body.

Hearn claims the winner of the rematch between Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz Jr will likely vacate the belt to instead face their IBF mandatory Kubrat Pulev - an easier option than Usyk.

10

Former sparring partner of Floyd Mayweather, Spences punch volume, body attacks and balance give him the tools to rule the welterweight division.

He has also been slated to move up the weights - having dwarfed many of his opponents at 147lbs - showing off his relentless pressure against Kell Brook in Sheffield three years ago.

But the Texan added another belt in September, after he out-battled Shawn Porter in a Fight of The Year contender to become the new WBC and unified champion.

He was already lined up to face either Danny Garcia or WBA champion Manny Pacquiao, but a devastating car crash left the boxer lucky to be alive and miraculously without a single broken bone.

10

Failing to get the decision against Canelo in 2017 and then 2018 has cost Golovkin both his belts and a spot in the second half of this list.

Despite his age, 37-year-old Golovkin became world champion again by winning Canelos vacated IBF belt against Sergiy Derevyanchenko last month.

Alvarez insists despite GGG winning back a world honour the trilogy does not interest him - unless the money is right.

But for Golovkin the road does not end with the Mexican, with a move up to super-middleweight to become a two-division champion also sure to enhance the Kazakh's legacy.

10

The Mexican rose to fame after avenging his defeat to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai - the man who dethroned super-flyweight king Roman Gonzalez.

It came after Estrada reigned as unified flyweight world champion having beaten Brian Viloria.

The 29-year-old moved to 40 wins in August after stopping American Dewayne Beamon in a tune-up bout ahead of bigger fights next year.

The Russian powerhouse cemented his place as the man at 175lbs after stopping Oleksandr Gvozdyk to add the WBC title to his IBF belt.

The now unified light-heavyweight puncher stayed resilient in the Eastern European affair and kept his 100 per cent KO rate intact.

A unification clash against WBA ruler Dmitry Bivol has now been mentioned alongside apotential meeting with Kovalev.

Ravens defense steals the show in big win over Texans – NBCSports.com

Posted: November 18, 2019 at 10:44 am

BALTIMORE For the first time all season, the Ravens defense, not the offense, had to carry the teams weight.

With the game tied at zero through the first quarter, and after a rare Justin Tucker missed field goal, the Ravens defense was forced to hold the fort long enough for the offense to get going. And once the offense found its stride, the defense didnt let up.

The Ravens defense held MVP-candidate Deshaun Watson at bay all afternoon long en route to another 30-pointwin, a 41-7 romp, at M&T Bank Stadium over the Texans.

I feel like were hitting our stride, especially with the defensive side of the ball, defensive tackle Chris Wormley said. The offense has been playing well all season and were finally clicking on all levels. Today felt pretty good being the side of the ball that got us going.

Baltimore finished with a season-high seven sacks and had 10 quarterback hits on Watson. For the entirety of the afternoon, the Ravens kept Watson in the pocket and unable to throw downfield with any consistency. The end result was the best defensive performance of the season.

Just try to contain him, keep him in that cage, Tyus Bowser said of the gameplan. Just try to get to him as best you can. They have a great front line, and we did very well as far as in the secondary of making him hold the ball. When that happens, weve got to do our job on the front line and try to get to him and we did that well.

Bowser finished with two sacks, as did Matthew Judon. The sacks kept the Texans offense, which entered ranked eighth in the NFL with 26.4 points per game, down to just seven the touchdown came when the Texans trailed 34-0.

Watson threw for just 169 yards on 18-of-29 passing with an interception. Houston had just 232 yards of total offense and possessed the ball for just 23:41 of game time.

But the most impressive part of the day was the pass-rush for the Ravens, who entered with just 16 sacks on the season.

It was part of the plan, Wormley said. We worked it all week and we stuck to it. No one was selfish and trying to do their own thing and it worked out pretty well for us.

Once the Ravens offense, which scored on its last seven possessions drives that didnt end the half or the game got going, the Ravens defense didnt let up, either.

Houston turned the ball over twice, punted three times and turned it over on downs three times throughout the game. The other two drives ended in a missed field goal and a touchdown.

The way the win happened was, admittedly, a bit shocking for the Ravens, which had to slow down DeAndre Hopkins and Watson, one of the NFLs best quarterback-wide receiver combos. Hopkins finished with just 80 yards on seven catches and the Ravens dominated one of the NFL's best teams from start to finish.

You just go out there and play the best ball that you can, Earl Thomas said. Today was a little surprising, I hope nobody on the team gets offended, but I didnt think we was going to do them like that. Just take it one game at a time and keep chopping wood.

With the Ravens defense seemingly having turned a corner, the Ravens can now seriously be discussed as one of the NFLs elite teams if they werent already.

Its a start contrast from where the defense was after the fourth game of the season, a 40-25 loss to the Browns where the defense couldnt get out of its own way. The Ravens fell to 2-2 and vowed to fix the communication errors which plagued the team for the first quarter of the season.

That loss to Cleveland on Sept. 29 was the teams last loss.

Wink (defensive coordinator Don Martindale) told us at the beginning of the week that this defense is 40 percent different than it was at the beginning of the season, Wormley said. So it just goes to show that our plan works, no matter who is in it.

With an injury to Michael Pierce, the Ravens relied upon Domata Peko and Justin Ellis, two defensive linemen who werent in the organization a week ago, to play crucial defensive snaps.

The Texans rushed for 6.1 yards a carry, but with the seven sacks, they were forced to play behind the chains for a majority of the day.

Its just what we do, Brandon Williams said. Its what we hang our hats on next man up. We've said it from the very beginning. Look, people get hurt, youve seen it. But, other people are coming in and balling out. We love to see that.

In three of the last four weeks, the Ravens have now earned victories over Russell Wilson, Tom Brady and Deshaun Watson. In none of those weeks have either quarterbacks scored more than 20 points against the Ravens.

While the offense hung 41 points, with a quarterback in Lamar Jackson seemingly gaining more MVP hype each day, Sunday was about the defense.

And while it may seem that the offense is the reason that has made the Ravens tick this season, its the defense which the Ravens will need most down the stretch. If Sunday is any indication, theyre going to be one of the toughest outs in the NFL.

Maybe theres no weak links? I dont know, Wormley said with a smile. We just talked about the offense started a little slow today, but our defense picked it up. When were beating these teams convincingly, especially these top teams in the NFL, its a good feeling.

Weight-Loss Attempts Are on the Rise. Why Aren’t People Seeing Results? – InsideHook

Weight loss attempts are going up. Unfortunately, so is weight.

Unsplash

Despite a push in recent years toward a more body-positive cultural mindset, a new study found Americans are still increasingly pursuing weight loss, and to little avail.

Thestudy published this week in JAMA Network Open, found that while more US adults than ever before are attempting to lose weight, the nation continues to see overall increases in weight and BMI. The cross-sectional study examined trends in weight-loss attempts and strategies among 48,026 US adults between 1999 and 2016. The study ultimately found an increase in weight-loss attempts and strategies, despite a corresponding increase in weight.

The reported weight-loss methods included fairly standard tactics such as eating less, calorie restriction and exercise, as well as potentially more drastic strategies like skipped meals and laxatives. In examining these trends over the years, the study painted an interesting picture of cultural shifts that have taken place in recent decades when it comes to diet and weight-loss behaviors.

While nearly every method saw an increase in use from the first year of the study to the last, perhaps none is more significant than the leap in dieters attempting to lose weight by drinking more water. While only seven people reported drinking water for weight loss in 19992000, 1,370 said they tried the method in 20152016, which, as Vices Hannah Smothers pointed out, may reflect the influence of the catchall celebrity wellness advice to drink more water.

While the study didnt provide much explanation for the results it observed, researchers suggested people may be over-reporting their attempts to lose weight. Whether or not the reported increase in attempted weight loss is reflective of actual weight-loss efforts playing out across the country, the results reflect a nation increasingly stressed about body size despite recent cultural attempts to instill a more body-inclusive mindset.

Bella Thorne’s Fans Are ‘Disappointed’ In Her Instagram Post Promoting a Weight Loss App – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: November 17, 2019 at 4:48 pm

There are plenty of controversial celebrities, and one of the relative newcomers is Bella Thorne. Thorne first attained fame through the Disney Channel but has since gone her own way and shes made her free-spirited attitude known. From releasing her own nude photos to getting involved in the adult film industry to creating provocative posts on Instagram, shes no stranger to fan backlash, either.

Thorne has made it clear shes unconcerned with the media hate, as shes branched out into the worlds of music, makeup, and filmmaking despite the negativity. While she certainly has plenty of fans who back up her endeavors, one of her Instagram promotions really missed the mark. Heres what she posted.

With over 20 million followers, Thorne has been posting her life to Instagram and attaining an audience for quite some time. But many of her artistic endeavors have missed the mark with her fans. In October, it was her Halloween makeup that startled her fan base. The star posted photos of her covered in makeup to make it look like her face was physically beaten, and many thought it was totally offensive to those in domestic violence situations.

Not only that, but other celebrities have called out Thorne, too. We cant forget when Whoopi Goldberg criticized Thorne for releasing nude photos to the public via Twitter. And when Thorne tweeted a complaint about traffic making her late for her boyfriends concert back in early 2018, Rob Lowe called her out since the traffic was a result of mudslides that killed at least 17 people.

This attitude is why people hate celebrities/Hollywood. Bella, Im sorry you were inconvenienced. We will try to move out our dead quicker, Lowe tweeted in response.

Aside from some of her more abrasive social media posts, Thornes partnerships are also causing an uproar. She took to Instagram to share a post of her in full workout gear doing a lower body challenge with no equipment. The top right corner of the post features the Flat Tummy logo, as thats the company Thornes paid to promote.

Thorne suggested to her followers in her Instagram caption that they should download the Flat Tummy App. I never have time to get on a real schedule but this is keeping me on track. Its got home workouts, meal plans, progress trackers.. EVERYTHINGG!! she wrote. You dont need expensive equipment or any of that stuff you just need this app.

Thorne is one of many influencers whos promoted Flat Tummy Co.s products. The Guardian explains the Kardashians, the Jenners, and hundreds of other celebs have all promoted the company, and Flat Tummy makes major money from Instagram, too. Unfortunately, the company uses its wellness brand to make cash off of womens physical insecurities and even ex-employees have spoken about how they wish they were never a part of it.

Thornes followers certainly arent happy with the post. A few called out that she had a naturally thin physique that clearly wasnt helped by the Flat Tummy App. And others were surprised to see Thorne in workout clothes since she appears to never workout otherwise.

One follower commented, i know you just want to get your coin but its not like youre on the brink of being homeless, i hope you actually use this app and please dont forget your morals.

Another wrote, I love your authenticity Bella but Im very disappointed with this.

And another added, disappointed youre promoting this tbh.

As stated before, Thorne is one of many promoters for this brand. While we hope she stops pushing weight loss products to her followers and instead pushes more authentic content, were not too surprised to see another celebrity give Flat Tummy Co. their attention.
