How Eating Slow Can Transform Your Health and Make You More Productive – Entrepreneur

Mindful eating is a powerful technique that helps prevent binge eating and can bolster performance at work.

October30, 20196 min read

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

When you are hovered over your computer, do you think about what youre eating or do you just shove it in your mouth? Likely the latter. And how long does it take you to eat a meal at work? Probably less than 20 minutes. And do you stop eating when you feel satisfied or do you finish everything on the plate, in the tupperware or whatever was wrapped up to go in paper for you? Not surprisingly, you probably finish it off, mindlessly unaware of portion size, so you can get to that call, meeting, errand or just keep up with the increasingly fast pace that we are working at.

Personally, multi-tasking and slowing down is a work in progress for me, and I suffer from digestion issues if I eat too quickly or on-the-go.I have a European heritage, and I think about how Europeans tend tonoteat and drink on-the-go or at their desks like Americans do. Rather, they sit down to enjoy their coffee or meals, so much that the only reason they have to-go cups at European cafes seems to be for the American tourists.

Enter mindful eating,a practice that can transform our health dramatically. Mindful eating is simply making yourself aware of what you are eating and how much you are eating. When we eat mindfully, we focus on things such as the color of our food, the portion size, the way it is plated, where the food came from, how wefeel when we're eating it and how the food is going to nourish our bodies.

Sara Vance, CN, author ofThe Perfect Metabolism Planand nutritionist for the reputed Golden Door Spa, explains that, When a client tells me they get indigestion after lunch, before I ask them what they are eating, I askhowthey are eating their lunch.More often than not, they are eating in front of their computer doing work. I always say, stress and digestion dont mix.

Vance uses the analogy of distracted driving to explain what she refers to as distracted eating. She explains, When we eat in front of the computer, televisionor while driving, we arent focused on our food. Mindful eating is the practice of eating without distractions. When we eat mindfully, not only do we digest our food better, but we enjoy it more too.

A recent study showed thatmindfulness-- and not certain foods --iswhat leads to weight loss and better health. Thestudy concludedthat, Increased mindful eating has been shown to help participants gain awareness of their bodies, be more in tune to hunger and satiety, recognize external cues to eat, gain self-compassion, decrease food cravings, decrease problematic eatingand decrease reward-driven eating.

While it may be unrealistic to count your bites or examine the color and texture of the tomatoes in your meal, you can at the very least slow down the pace at which you chew. And before you chew, ask yourself:Am I listening to my body cues?Am I eating because the clock says noon or because I really am hungry? Otherwise, a lot of our foodconsumption, in particular while working, tends to come in the form of addictive eating, stress eating oreating out of boredom; essentially, the opposite of mindful eating.

So how can you try mindful eating out for yourself?Try the exercise below, butpick a time when youre not scrolling through your phone and/or typing away in front of your computer. Set aside time to simply eat, not multi-task. Here's how.

Finally, take a little break once you feel satisfied.Vance also comments that it takes your brain and body about 20 minutes to register feelings of fullness. The likely results will include consuimingfewer calories and eating less without feeling deprived;improved digestion; a better understanding ofhunger cues; and an improvedability tostop eating when you feel satisfied, so that you are not eating to discomfort. Overall, you will change your relationship with food, focus less on reward-driven eating and reduce your frequency of problematic eating.

So, take the 30 minutes away from your work and desk if you are able to. Not only will this break result inmore efficient performance, but you will alsocome back to your desk feeling more focused and recharged. While its unrealistic to do this every day, at least try to slow down the pace at which you eat. Youwill feel the results with your first meal, and set yourself in the right direction of creatinga simple, healthy habitthat can quickly improve your health and digestion, help you feel better and make you more productive at home and at the office.

Docs said our toddler was just clingy but we learned the truth on Google it was cancer – The Sun

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:44 pm

WHEN Laura Farmer-Maia's daughter suddenly became clingy and unhappy, she initially brushed it off as nothing but "a phase".

And given little Beatriz was just three-years-old, the last thing to cross her mind was cancer.

16

Yet, months after doctors repeatedly dismissed the symptoms as clinginess, the diagnosis was confirmed - Beatriz had an aggressive childhood cancer known as a neuroblastoma.

The horrifying news came after Beatriz's father Tiago Maia refused to leave the hospital after discovering the potential diagnosis himself on Google.

Shocked, Laura, 39, and Tiago, 40, are now urging all parents to be vigilant and check their kids for signs of the disease.

The mum, who works in advertising, first suspected something was wrong last July, when Beatriz's behaviour dramatically changed.

16

16

She said: "Before she was diagnosed, Beatriz was quite naughty but when she reached two, she suddenly became clingy and picky with her food, and had a fever all the time.

"We took her to the GP who believed it was a virus and after recurrent visits they gave her some antibiotics to cover for a potential bacterial cause, which didnt have any effect.

"Beatriz started to complain that her legs hurt so we took her to A&E, where they did some more tests and still said it might be a virus.

"Its hard to get a diagnosis right when a child is too young to explain how theyre feeling, but in the back of our minds we knew it was something bad.

"We want to spread awareness of the difficulty of diagnosing cancer in young children - if your child doesnt seem right, you should push for further tests."

16

16

Tiago pushed the GP for more tests, and blood tests showed something was wrong, so Beatriz was sent urgently to hospital.

It was there medics finally discovered a lump above her kidney and diagnosed her with neuroblastoma in September last year.

The cancer is aggressive and has a 40 per cent chance of long-term survival.

Everything moved so quickly and we all felt frightened as they carried out the tests

Tiago, originally from Portugal, added: "At the hospital, they twice said it was likely to be a virus and I refused to leave until I saw a specialist.

"I waited for three hours until a more senior doctor was free, and then Beatriz was examined by different specialists who admitted her to do all kinds of tests and observations including X-rays and ultrasounds - it was the last one that confirmed there was a lump.

"When my fears from Google turned out to be true, it was very strange because even though my life had just flipped upside down, I was almost relieved to be right - it was weird and confusing."

16

16

Beatriz was referred straight to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, where they carried out further tests including scans, blood tests and biopsies.

She began chemotherapy just a week after being diagnosed and underwent eight gruelling rounds of chemo over the next 18 months.

Doctors then carried out a stem cell transplant to regenerate bone marrow destroyed by high dose chemo, which meant Beatriz couldnt leave the hospital for eight weeks.

Tiago, a design director, said: "I was quite scared when Beatriz was diagnosed because my mum and dad had only recently died from cancer I thought of the worst.

16

16

16

"Everything moved so quickly and we all felt frightened as they carried out the tests.

"Doctors found that the cancer had spread across her body, so she began chemotherapy just weeks after being diagnosed.

"We were told the treatment would last 18 months which was a massive shock to us.

"A week after Beatriz started chemotherapy she massively improved, but it was tricky being in hospital at first.

"Now, she still has periods of discomfort but sometimes shes happy to be in hospital because she has toys and people to come and play with her."

16

16

Laura added: "The stem cell transplant was a hard time for us all because we had to spend a lot of time apart from our other daughter, Clara, six.

"Beatriz was diagnosed in Claras first week of school and it was difficult because that was supposed to be an exciting time for her."

After more scans and hopes of an all-clear, doctors found more metastatic growths still remaining in Beatrizs head, which meant that the cancer hadnt fully cleared up and she had relapsed.

The brave youngster is now undergoing immunotherapy and is due to start a six month medical trial on the NHS at Great Ormond Street Hospital, called the Beacon Trial.

16

What is neuroblastoma?

Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that most commonly afflicts babies and young children.

The disease develops from special nerve cells, known as neuroblasts, which get left behind from the child's development in the womb.

It mostly begins in the sufferer's adrenal glands located above the kidneys but can occur in the nerve tissue that runs along the spinal cord in the neck, chest, abdomen or pelvis.

The vicious illness can then spread to other organs like the bone, bone marrow, lymph nodes and skin.

Neuroblastoma afflicts around 100 children a year in the UK but the cause of the disease is still not known.

Its symptoms can include:

It is uncertain whether the trial will work and, even if Beatriz goes into remission, relapse rates are high but her parents are determined to do everything they can to stop the cancer from returning.

Laura and Tiago are now trying to raise 200,000 to help get their daughter into remission or to keep the cancer away if her treatment goes well.

The money is hoped to go towards further treatment, or if Beatriz gets the all-clear, a special vaccine in New York which helps keep the disease away.

Laura said: "After the stem cell transplant, the end was almost in sight but then she relapsed.

In a season of pleasant surprises, Jevon Carter stands out from the rest – Bright Side of the Sun

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:44 pm

When Jevon Carter was dealt to the Phoenix Suns on July 7th, 2019, he was nothing more than an afterthought to what Suns fans considered the Josh Jackson trade. On that day, Suns fans were primarily preoccupied with either celebrating the end of the Jackson era in Phoenix, or with bemoaning the loss of promising rookie DeAnthony Melton. But there was little to no discussion on the incoming point guard Carter, whose rookie campaign was far from impressive given its stat line of 4.4 points and 1.8 assists per game on just 30 percent shooting.

Now, fast forward to Monday.

In just a matter of four short games, Carters relentless energy has infected Suns fans. He is quickly becoming a fan favorite, a byproduct of not only hustle but also tangible results.

I got to give a lot of credit to Coach, he told reporters after the loss to the Jazz. He lets me go out there and be confident and play through my mistakes so that I dont have to think a lot. I shoot the ball when Im open.

And most importantly, those open shots are falling. Through four games Carter is averaging 10 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists on an absurd 65% true shooting percentage. Hes also 10-for-20 on three-point attempts. While that level of shooting efficiency is unsustainable, it seems that Carters hard work over the summer to become a capable floor spacer has paid off. He estimates that he got up anywhere between 500 to 1500 shots per day over the summer, depending on whether it was a low volume or high volume workout.

Thats given him the skill set to go out and impress Monty Williams to the point where hes quickly seizing minutes from other Suns rotation pieces. Going into the season I expected the veteran Tyler Johnson to make for a fine 6th man, but on Monday it was Carter who received 26 minutes to Johnsons 20. Carter has always been known as a ball hawk, but its his improved offense that will keep him on the floor for longer.

Feel free to re-live this clutch moment, where Carter proves hes more than just a catch-and-shoot player. With time winding down on the shot clock he pump fakes Bogdanovic out of his shoes, side steps and nails the game-tying triple. The entire sequence shows the poise of a player several years his elder.

Furthermore, its not just the long distance shooting that seems to be on an upward trajectory. Carter shot just 8-for-28 in his rookie year on shots within 5 feet of the rim, which is simply unacceptable production if you want to stay on the court at the NBA level. Thats far worse finishing than even a player like Tyler Ulis.

While a four-game sample size is small, weve already seen flashes of better finishing from Carter this year (who has, admittedly, only attempted 4 shots within 5 feet thus far).

Understanding that were working with such a small sample size, you still love to see a play like this from Carter. Coming off a screen set by Kaminsky, he fakes a drive left to get the separation from Donovan Mitchell. He then gets a clean drive down the lane past Ed Davis, a far less intimidating rim protector than Rudy Gobert.

He also had a terrific play in transition the other night against the Clippers, spinning and finishing over two defenders.

Of course, being a point guard also involves quite a bit of facilitating and thats been the main knock on Carter so far. And its true, the Suns have a far more difficult time making similar offensive reads when downgrading from Rubio to Carter.

But thats not to say that Carter has been a bad playmaker. While he might have to worry about Ty Jerome waiting in the wings to fill that void, his assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.7 is at least decent and hes shown off some nice reads over the past couple games.

This play in particular displays Carters vision nicely. Its not fancy, but first Carter spins off the Kaminsky screen to get Mitchell on his hip. He then has the good sense to hard dribble towards Davis, forcing a hedge and creating the spacing necessary to open up Kaminsky for three. Its basic stuff like this that goes a long way in the Suns new-look offense that is so heavily predicated on threes from big men like Saric, Kaminsky, and Baynes.

Finally, back to the stuff that makes Suns fans love Carter so much in the first place. The recognition on this play to see the roll from Gobert and sacrifice his body for the charge is downright phenomenal. Dont forget, Gobert has a 50-pound weight advantage.

You can also point to this bizarre fact that Carter has allowed opponents to shoot a combined 0-16 from deep thus far.

With just a 64 wingspan, Carter is not a physical freak built in the same mold as a Mikal Bridges or DeAnthony Melton. But he remains at least solid, if not definitively above-average on defense, by applying intense ball pressure throughout the game and never letting up. His lack of length prevents him from being much of a switchable defender, but he can hold his own against fellow point guards for sure.

To start to wrap things up here, lets get to the million-dollar question. How much of this is sustainable?

Well, Im pretty confident in two things:

So lets just say that some regression to the mean should be expected. In addition to those reasonable assumptions, lets not forget that Ty Jerome will be a crafty playmaker hungry for minutes within just a few weeks, and that Tyler Johnson remains a capable option to play spot PG minutes. And oh yeah, that Devin Booker guy can play that position too.

Still, there remains a legitimate value in being able to pump up teammates and fans like Jevon Carter has done throughout the first week of the season. He doesnt have to be an elite shooter or finisher, but if he can at least prove that those areas of his game have sincerely improved since his rookie year, hell be a hard guy to kick out of the rotation.

Brazil Nuts and Testosterone: Is There a Link? – Healthline

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

Testosterone is the main male sex hormone. It plays a key role in male development, and low levels can affect sexual function, mood, energy levels, hair growth, bone health, and more (1, 2).

Levels of this hormone naturally decline with age, with studies suggesting that hypogonadism, a condition in which the body doesnt produce enough testosterone, affects 39% of men aged 45 and over in the United States (3).

Though hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the most common way to treat low testosterone levels, many men seek natural supplements or foods that can boost their testosterone levels.

Recently, Brazil nuts have become more popular among men, as they are said to help raise testosterone levels and aid fertility.

This article explores the effects of Brazil nuts on testosterone.

Brazil nuts are said to boost testosterone levels due to their high selenium content.

A 1-ounce (28-gram) serving provides a whopping 988% of the Daily Value (DV) (4).

Several studies have shown that taking a selenium supplement may improve testosterone levels or aid male fertility by enhancing semen quality (5, 6, 7).

For example, a test-tube study in sheep cells found that supplementing with selenium activated genes and pathways that enhanced testosterone production (8).

Similarly, a 26-week study in 468 men with infertility noted that taking 200 mcg of selenium along with 600 mg of N-acetyl-cysteine daily increased testosterone production, sperm count, and sperm quality, compared with a placebo (9).

Another study in 690 men with infertility observed that taking 200 mcg of selenium along with 400 units of vitamin E for 100 days improved sperm motility and appearance in 53% of participants. Plus, 11% of men in the study were able to get their partners pregnant (10).

However, in some studies, a high intake of selenium through foods or supplements had either no effect on testosterone levels or negatively affected sperm motility (11, 12).

Also, its worth noting that most of these studies use selenium supplements rather than foods high in selenium, such as Brazil nuts.

This highlights the need for more research on Brazil nuts effects on testosterone levels specifically.

Some studies show that high selenium intake may improve testosterone levels, sperm motility, and sperm quality. Still, more studies are needed to confirm this effect.

Aside from raising testosterone levels and aiding male fertility, Brazil nuts have been linked to many other impressive health benefits, including:

While these findings are promising, more human studies are needed before recommendations can be made regarding Brazil nuts potential to help treat these conditions.

Brazil nuts are a good source of antioxidants, may have anti-inflammatory effects, and have been linked to benefits for the thyroid gland, heart, brain, and blood sugar levels.

Though Brazil nuts offer health benefits, eating too many can be harmful.

Research has shown that eating more than 5,000 mcg of selenium per day, or approximately 50 Brazil nuts, can cause selenium toxicity (27).

Signs of selenium toxicity include gastrointestinal issues, hair loss, brittle nails, fatigue, skin lesions or rashes, and muscle and joint pain. In severe cases, selenium toxicity may cause kidney failure, heart failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and even death (28).

However, reaching toxicity levels through diet alone is quite rare.

Other studies have found that too much selenium, especially from supplements, is linked to poor blood sugar control, as well as a higher risk of diabetes and prostate cancer (29, 30, 31).

Selenium has a tolerable upper intake level of 400 mcg per day, which means you can safely consume up to this amount without adverse effects. That is equal to 4 average-sized Brazil nuts per day (27).

Try to limit yourself to one to three Brazil nuts per day to be safe.

Eating too many Brazil nuts can be harmful due to their high selenium content. Try to limit your Brazil nut intake to one to three per day.

Though Brazil nuts may help raise testosterone levels, more research is needed before it can be recommended for this purpose.

Fortunately, other strategies to boost your testosterone levels are supported by more research, including:

In some cases, low testosterone could be due to an underlying medical condition, so its important to speak with your healthcare provider if you think you have low testosterone.

Common symptoms that occur with low testosterone include fatigue, low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, depression, hair loss, and muscle loss (3).

Regular exercise, sufficient sleep, minimizing stress, losing excess fat, and eating a healthy, varied diet may help raise testosterone levels. If you suspect that you have low testosterone levels, seek advice from your healthcare provider.

Current research on Brazil nuts, testosterone, and male fertility is mixed.

While several studies have linked higher selenium intake to increased testosterone levels and improved sperm motility and quality, others have found no effect.

This highlights the need for more research in this area, especially on the link between foods high in selenium, such as Brazil nuts, and testosterone.

If you think you may have low testosterone levels, its best to speak with your healthcare provider before trying natural treatments, as low testosterone levels could indicate an underlying health condition.

Chiropractic Economics October 28, 2019

As Octobers National Chiropractic Health Month comes to an end, doctors of chiropractic and their staff are encouraged to this week give one last effort via social media, e-news and their communication outlets to raise the profile of chiropractic.

Back pain remains one of the most prevalent and disabling conditions worldwide, and various chiropractic organizations are sharing back-injury prevention and strengthening tips in addition to information on the value of a conservative approach to back pain treatment.

As the overuse and abuse of prescription opioid painkillers in the United States remains a top public health problem, its essential for health care consumers and providers to understand that spinal manipulation and other conservative approaches can treat musculoskeletal conditions such as low-back pain effectively and safely.

The American Chiropractic Association has also launched a campaign to enact federal legislation that would allow DCs to perform to the fullest scope of their license in Medicare, which currently serves more than 55 million seniors. To support the National Medicare Equality Petition go to acatoday.org/equality to ensure the aging population receives full access to chiropractic care.

As California wildfires force massive evacuations, American Kidney Fund activates Disaster Relief Program to help vulnerable dialysis patients – Yahoo…

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 30, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hurricane-force winds are fueling the spread of wildfires in Northern and Southern California, causing hundreds of thousands of people to be evacuated from their homes and Governor Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency. To help vulnerable dialysis patients in the path of the fires, the American Kidney Fund (AKF) has activated its Disaster Relief Program, the nations only rapid-response system that provides emergency financial assistance to dialysis patients.

When disaster strikes their communities, disaster relief grants from AKF help patients replace lost medications and special renal diet foods, pay for temporary housing and transportation to treatment, and replace clothing and personal essentials lost due to the natural disaster or the need to evacuate without notice.

The destructive wildfires have already created extensive damage, and much of the state is without power. Schools and businesses have been closed for safety, and Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) has been shutting off electricity and gas in an effort to help prevent the wildfires from spreading. The power outages include people on PG&Es list of customers who require electricity in their homes to run medical equipment, such as home dialysis machines.

We are very concerned about how dialysis patients are faring in this emergency situation, and are prepared to help them with disaster relief grants beginning today, said LaVarne A. Burton, AKF president and chief executive officer. Emergency evacuations and power outages create very challenging, life-threatening situations for these patients. Patients in the fire zones are faced with losing all their belongings, including their medicines and their renal-friendly foods, when they evacuate their homes. Those who dialyze at home need electricity to complete their treatments, and those who dialyze in a center that is without power have to find an alternative place for treatment during lengthy and widespread outages.

Missing just one dialysis treatment due to a power outage puts a patients life at risk. PG&Es shutoffs this month have caused multiple dialysis centers to close and dialysis patients, particularly in rural areas of California, to evacuate to find places they can safely dialyze. Having dialysis treatment schedules affected by power outages causes additional burden and stress for dialysis patients during a time they should be focusing on staying safe during a natural disaster.

Any California dialysis patient affected by the wildfires who needs an AKF disaster relief grant should contact their dialysis social worker for information on applying, or call AKF directly at 800.795.3226.

About the American Kidney Fund

The American Kidney Fund (AKF) fights kidney disease on all fronts as the nations leading kidney nonprofit. AKF works on behalf of the 37 million Americans living with kidney disease, and the millions more at risk, with an unmatched scope of programs that support people wherever they are in their fight against kidney diseasefrom prevention through transplant. I tried smoking meat. Here’s how it went. – Bangor Daily News

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

Congratulations are in order, readers. This week, I celebrated my first anniversary at Hello Homestead at the Bangor Daily News. It may seem like small potatoes, but its a big deal for me I havent lived anywhere for a full year since I graduated college. Its a satisfying milestone, but also bittersweet. I traveled through most of my early twenties, and sometimes, I miss the adventure. No matter where I am, though, nothing brings me back to the days haggling with hand gestures, living out of a backpack and sleeping under the stars quite like the smell of smoking meat.

Smoking meat is one of the earliest forms of food preparation and preservation, dating back to the Paleolithic era. Formaldehyde, alcohol and other chemicals in wood smoke act as natural preservatives, kill microbes and slow fat oxidation, while drying the meat removes moisture that promotes bacterial growth.

Smoking meat (as opposed to applying direct heat) tenderizes tough cuts and gives meat a unique flavor. When burned, different woods break down into compounds with unique, complex smells and tastes. Smoldering cherrywood, for example, imparts a hint of fruity sweetness, while mesquite smoke leaves a savory, earthy flavor.

Cultures all over the world smoke meat. Everywhere I traveled, someone always seemed to be smoking something, whether it was lamb spit-roasting on the bustling streets of Marrakesh or guinea pig smoking in the volcano-vistaed backyard of a farm in Ecuador.

No matter what is being roasted or how and where, for that matter the smoky, meaty scent fills me with adventurous nostalgia. Now that I have settled down in Maine (happily, I might add), learning how to smoke meat for myself seemed like a great way to keep those memories alive.

Sam Schipani | BDN

Colt Knight, state livestock specialist and assistant professor at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, and his homemade smokehouse.

From the start, I knew exactly who to recruit for my meat-smoking adventure: Colt Knight, state livestock specialist and assistant professor at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. I met Colt while working on a story about a tech-based rural education program he runs using hand-crafted GPS collars for cows.

At the time, he mentioned that he was building a smokehouse in his backyard. Plus, he hosts a number of meat-processing and preparation workshops, including an upcoming Barbeque 101 workshop that features you guessed it smoking meat.

I called Colt up, and he invited me to his house for a smoking lesson. His smoker was all set up, and he had pork belly prepared for an (ironically, perhaps) all-American smoked classic: bacon.

Though you cant go wrong with smoked Southern barbecue or New York City pastrami, no smoked meat has captured the American cultural consciousness quite like bacon. Bacon mania a phenomenon so pervasive that it has its own thoroughly-cited Wikipedia page took over the country in the late-aughts. For a while, it seemed like bacon was in everything from milkshakes to mints.

This year, though Bacon Nation is sitting on over 40 million pounds of unsold pork belly because producers rushed to meet Chinese pork demand after an outbreak of African swine fever. Though exports may eventually even out the excess, some of that pork belly will find a way into ours (bellies, that is) for now.

There are a few different smoking techniques including low-temperature cold smoking primarily used to preserve meat, high-temperature hot smoking and barbeque smoke-roasting. We would be doing the former, Colt explained. He was already equipped with lump charcoal (never briquettes, he said some are made with lighter fluid that leave a chemical flavor) and dried hunks of applewood.

Just like in wood-fired stoves, smoking wood is generally seasoned, not green. Also you should avoid softwoods, such as pine, cedar and spruce. The porous wood will burn too fast and hot, leaving unpleasant flavors. Besides, the resins in softwoods can release hazardous, potentially-carcinogenic chemicals.

I also asked Colt about some other health concerns, including Listeria bacteria, which can grow in smoked meats when the internal temperature is not properly monitored. In fact, pregnant women are advised not to eat smoked meat at all, lest they pass Listeria-related neonatal infections to their child. Im not trying to get pregnant, but I still wanted to know the risks.

Colt explained that the curing process which usually takes about a week, and he would prepare in advance would help us avoid such nasty bacteria. Curing is essentially soaking the meat in salt, a key step in meat flavoring and preservation. Curing removes moisture and makes meat inhospitable for microbe growth that causes spoilage (and, apparently, Listeria). As a bonus, removing that moisture also makes the meat easier to smoke.

With my food safety fears assuaged, I was finally ready to start makin bacon. Even though Colt had cured bacon for our smokehouse experience in advance, he wanted me to experience all the steps of the process, including making the cure and preparing the meat for the curing process.

Colt lent me a psychedelic apron, and I donned a pair of food-safe gloves. Things were about to get messy.

First Colt pulled a giant fatty slab of pork belly out of a cooler. Fatty meat retains moisture better in the smoking process plus, the streaky marbling was perfect for bacon. He used the tip of his knife to point out where the meat was pulled off the ribs.

We cut the meat into slabs that would be small enough to put into gallon-sized freezer bags for curing. I was hesitant with the knife at first, but eventually, I let the blade do the work. With the right knife-work, it was like cutting through butter.

Then came curing. Colt used an old Kentucky curing recipe with equal parts kosher salt, maple syrup and brown sugar, plus a touch of pink curing salt. Curing salt, comprised of sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite, is controversial because of its potential carcinogenic effects. Scientists in the United Kingdom even called for banning nitrates in meat for fears of the cancer-causing effects.

While large amounts of nitrates are toxic, Colt explained that they play a key role from a food-safety perspective in curing meat. Moderation is key. We weighed the slabs of meat to figure out how much of the cure and more importantly, how much curing salt we were going to use.

I was less shocked by the sprinkle of curing salt than I was by the cups full of kosher salt, sugar and syrup we combined for the cure. It was just a reminder for me: bacon, while delicious so, so delicious is by no means a diet food (sorry, keto-maniacs).

We slathered on the cure and rubbed it in. Then, I slid my slabs of meat in a freezer bag. Colt explained that the meat needed to cure in the refrigerators for seven days (one week for every inch of thickness, he explained, and my slabs of pork belly were 1 inch thick). He recommended flipping the bag every day so the flavors can sneak into every nook and cranny. Over the course of the week, the meat should darken and stiffen.

Luckily, Colt had the pre-cured meat ready for my visit. We rinsed the meat to remove some of the excess salt and patted it dry.

Then, we started the smokehouse. Colt said that he modeled his smokehouse off of an old Applachian-style smokehouse he remembered from when he was a kid in West Virginia.

We waited for the temperature to reach around 90 degrees so we could begin cold-smoking. Colt realized that maybe we should have started the smokehouse earlier, but we decided to enjoy the beautiful day while we waited. I played with Colts extremely well-behaved basset hound, who needed a little bit of attention after we kept her so far from the delicious meats.

Once the smoke was tumbling out of the smokehouse vent, it was time to hang the meat inside. The porky belly looked and smelled beautiful: meaty divas with fog machine entrances.

Once again, though, waiting was the name of the game. Colt explained that the pork belly would have to smoke for four to six hours (sometimes more he said he takes it out when he likes the color). Some meats even require days to properly smoke.

I nearly panicked. I couldnt play with Colts dog for four to six hours; my editor would kill me. Silly me Colt, of course, was prepared with smoked pork belly that was ready for the next step: slicing. Colt said he even popped the pork belly in the freezer for a while beforehand to make it easier to slice.

Still, I struggled. My knife skills were still lacking, and I sliced the bacon too thick and uneven to properly cook. Colt was patient, but he could tell I was frustrated. He decided to break out the deli slicer. He was a little worried that I might slice my finger off. Little did he know, I was experienced with intimidating spinning blades from my pallet art experience.

Finally, the bacon was ready to cook. Colt hooked up a griddle and added our thick, freshly smoked slices. (Is there anything as musical as the sound of sizzling bacon? I think not.) Ever the gourmand, Colt also grilled the bread in the extra bacon fat.

The first bite of my bacon sandwich (fully loaded with five slices of bacon, carcinogens be damned) was divine. I may not have been abroad, but that scrumptious sandwich felt like the start of a whole new kind of adventure.

Smoking meat can be capital-intensive and time-consuming, but it is immensely rewarding if youre looking for flavor. The food safety concerns are legitimate, but its easier to navigate through them than it may initially seem (especially if you start with tutelage from an expert like Colt). Certain tools will make the process easier and smoother, and they could be expensive or difficult to DIY (Colt said it only took him a few days and some YouTube videos for him to make his smokehouse, but sans carpentry skills, it would probably take longer).

After a smoking lesson, though, I feel like I could smoke my own meat safely and effectively if I had the proper tools. I wonder if my landlord will let me build a smokehouse in my second-floor city walk-up.

Ariel Winter On Weight Loss, Switching Antidepressants, And Getting Motivated In The Gym – Women’s Health

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

Ariel Winter is on a mission for, in her own words, a big butt and Michelle Obama arms. A few more core muscles would be nice, too. I have two abs currently and Im looking to get more, she says.

The ability to transform her body at the gym is a new experience for Ariel. Years ago, it was hard because Id go to the gym with my trainer and because of my antidepressant medications I never saw results, she says.

Eventually, she decided to switch medicationsbut not for aesthetic reasons. I didnt change my antidepressants because I wanted to lose weight, Id just accepted it and it was fine, she says. I got inspired to actually find a medication that helped me as a person and did all the things I wanted it to do.

When she found a combination that worked for her, the Modern Family actress says it felt like it turned back on my metabolism. She admits the weight loss she experienced wasnt something she even worked for, saying it came with medications and happened really quickly.

Yet, it made an undeniable difference in Ariels outlook. When I changed meds, and started feeling better about myself mentally, losing weight was helpful because it made me feel like I wasnt just stuck. I hate being stuck anywhere in life.

The upside wasnt even necessarily her slimmer new frameIve always had curves and I like having curves, she saysbut her ability to finally see more visible results in the gym. Seeing her body changed helped her unearth her workout motivation again, and now she works out three times a week.

Her sweat sessions consist primarily of strength training. Ill do cardio occasionally but Im not looking to lose any more weight, Im looking to gain muscle, she says. I dont weigh myself, I don't care about that.

Ariels not a dieter, eitherin fact, she loves pizza, carbs, and a good cheese platebut shes trying to make a concerted effort to eat healthier. I know eating a ton of cheese, bread, greasy food isnt great for my heart or my insides so Im working on that, she says. These days shes focused on making small changes (think: turkey burgers instead of ground beef) and upping her meal prep game. Im trying to make more foods that will last me throughout the week, she says.

Ariels recent weight fluctuations have made her the target of plenty of cruelty on social media. I think the one thing that bugs me the most is when people say Oh thank god she lost weight, she used to be so fat, she says.

While she used to fire back in the comments of her Instagram posts, she changed gears after a fan pointed out that she spent more time responding to negative comments than nice ones. Its hard not to because Im a feisty person, nobody likes being treated that way, she says.

But shes committed to focusing on only what makes her happyand that includes continuing to crush her workouts in the gym. Im doing something for myself that Im seeing positive results from, and that makes me feel stronger and better, she says. Im feeling more energized and healthier, and its inspiring me to do new things.

Brain Training App Boosts Peoples Willpower And Aids Weight Loss, Experts Say – International Business Times

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

New research suggests that brain training using smartphones could help dieters resist their temptations and prevent weight gain.

The researchers at Cardiff University suggest that using online games to boost willpower among those who are trying to lose weight can help them to cut down around 200 calories per day. It is a "go/no-go" method that involves the participants to alter their responses to unhealthy foods. They asked the study participants to push a button when they were shown an image of healthy food options like broccoli and not do anything when they saw pictures of junk foods like fries, cheeseburgers or crisps. The researchers believe that such games can help to retrain brain impulses and make it easier to resist tempting unhealthy treats.

Experts opine that playing such brain training games for as little as 10 minutes weekly for about a month was sufficient enough to boost willpower and achieve weight loss.

The researchers reviewed several trials using such interventions and they found in one study that overweight individuals saw that their total daily calorie intake reduced by 200. And another study found that snacking on energy-dense foods reduced up to 20 percent within a month alongside weight loss of around 1.5 pounds.

About two in three adults residing in the UK are overweight or obese. The researchers believe that their findings are promising and that they are positive that extensive use of such interventions could help their nation to combat its obesity epidemic.

"A few idle moments could be enough to help dieters improve their daily eating habits," Prof Chris Chambers of Cardiff University and researcher of the study, said. "Smartphones are the most promising way to deliver boosting interventions for encouraging healthy eating because most adults have a smartphone and they can be used during times when we all have a few minutes to spare, such as on the commute to work.

They also used pictures of wine and beer in some studies to help individuals cut down their alcohol intake.

The experts are about to launch a mass trial involving 50,000 participants with a BMI of 25 or above for daily training of 5-10 minutes for around three months. If they find it effective, they will roll out an app soon after.
