I tried smoking meat. Here’s how it went. – Bangor Daily News

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

Congratulations are in order, readers. This week, I celebrated my first anniversary at Hello Homestead at the Bangor Daily News. It may seem like small potatoes, but its a big deal for me I havent lived anywhere for a full year since I graduated college. Its a satisfying milestone, but also bittersweet. I traveled through most of my early twenties, and sometimes, I miss the adventure. No matter where I am, though, nothing brings me back to the days haggling with hand gestures, living out of a backpack and sleeping under the stars quite like the smell of smoking meat.

Smoking meat is one of the earliest forms of food preparation and preservation, dating back to the Paleolithic era. Formaldehyde, alcohol and other chemicals in wood smoke act as natural preservatives, kill microbes and slow fat oxidation, while drying the meat removes moisture that promotes bacterial growth.

Smoking meat (as opposed to applying direct heat) tenderizes tough cuts and gives meat a unique flavor. When burned, different woods break down into compounds with unique, complex smells and tastes. Smoldering cherrywood, for example, imparts a hint of fruity sweetness, while mesquite smoke leaves a savory, earthy flavor.

Cultures all over the world smoke meat. Everywhere I traveled, someone always seemed to be smoking something, whether it was lamb spit-roasting on the bustling streets of Marrakesh or guinea pig smoking in the volcano-vistaed backyard of a farm in Ecuador.

No matter what is being roasted or how and where, for that matter the smoky, meaty scent fills me with adventurous nostalgia. Now that I have settled down in Maine (happily, I might add), learning how to smoke meat for myself seemed like a great way to keep those memories alive.

Sam Schipani | BDN

Colt Knight, state livestock specialist and assistant professor at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, and his homemade smokehouse.

From the start, I knew exactly who to recruit for my meat-smoking adventure: Colt Knight, state livestock specialist and assistant professor at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. I met Colt while working on a story about a tech-based rural education program he runs using hand-crafted GPS collars for cows.

At the time, he mentioned that he was building a smokehouse in his backyard. Plus, he hosts a number of meat-processing and preparation workshops, including an upcoming Barbeque 101 workshop that features you guessed it smoking meat.

I called Colt up, and he invited me to his house for a smoking lesson. His smoker was all set up, and he had pork belly prepared for an (ironically, perhaps) all-American smoked classic: bacon.

Though you cant go wrong with smoked Southern barbecue or New York City pastrami, no smoked meat has captured the American cultural consciousness quite like bacon. Bacon mania a phenomenon so pervasive that it has its own thoroughly-cited Wikipedia page took over the country in the late-aughts. For a while, it seemed like bacon was in everything from milkshakes to mints.

This year, though Bacon Nation is sitting on over 40 million pounds of unsold pork belly because producers rushed to meet Chinese pork demand after an outbreak of African swine fever. Though exports may eventually even out the excess, some of that pork belly will find a way into ours (bellies, that is) for now.

There are a few different smoking techniques including low-temperature cold smoking primarily used to preserve meat, high-temperature hot smoking and barbeque smoke-roasting. We would be doing the former, Colt explained. He was already equipped with lump charcoal (never briquettes, he said some are made with lighter fluid that leave a chemical flavor) and dried hunks of applewood.

Just like in wood-fired stoves, smoking wood is generally seasoned, not green. Also you should avoid softwoods, such as pine, cedar and spruce. The porous wood will burn too fast and hot, leaving unpleasant flavors. Besides, the resins in softwoods can release hazardous, potentially-carcinogenic chemicals.

I also asked Colt about some other health concerns, including Listeria bacteria, which can grow in smoked meats when the internal temperature is not properly monitored. In fact, pregnant women are advised not to eat smoked meat at all, lest they pass Listeria-related neonatal infections to their child. Im not trying to get pregnant, but I still wanted to know the risks.

Colt explained that the curing process which usually takes about a week, and he would prepare in advance would help us avoid such nasty bacteria. Curing is essentially soaking the meat in salt, a key step in meat flavoring and preservation. Curing removes moisture and makes meat inhospitable for microbe growth that causes spoilage (and, apparently, Listeria). As a bonus, removing that moisture also makes the meat easier to smoke.

With my food safety fears assuaged, I was finally ready to start makin bacon. Even though Colt had cured bacon for our smokehouse experience in advance, he wanted me to experience all the steps of the process, including making the cure and preparing the meat for the curing process.

Colt lent me a psychedelic apron, and I donned a pair of food-safe gloves. Things were about to get messy.

First Colt pulled a giant fatty slab of pork belly out of a cooler. Fatty meat retains moisture better in the smoking process plus, the streaky marbling was perfect for bacon. He used the tip of his knife to point out where the meat was pulled off the ribs.

Sam Schipani | BDN

Pork belly with a knife indicating where the meat was separated from the ribs.

We cut the meat into slabs that would be small enough to put into gallon-sized freezer bags for curing. I was hesitant with the knife at first, but eventually, I let the blade do the work. With the right knife-work, it was like cutting through butter.

Then came curing. Colt used an old Kentucky curing recipe with equal parts kosher salt, maple syrup and brown sugar, plus a touch of pink curing salt. Curing salt, comprised of sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite, is controversial because of its potential carcinogenic effects. Scientists in the United Kingdom even called for banning nitrates in meat for fears of the cancer-causing effects.

While large amounts of nitrates are toxic, Colt explained that they play a key role from a food-safety perspective in curing meat. Moderation is key. We weighed the slabs of meat to figure out how much of the cure and more importantly, how much curing salt we were going to use.

I was less shocked by the sprinkle of curing salt than I was by the cups full of kosher salt, sugar and syrup we combined for the cure. It was just a reminder for me: bacon, while delicious so, so delicious is by no means a diet food (sorry, keto-maniacs).

We slathered on the cure and rubbed it in. Then, I slid my slabs of meat in a freezer bag. Colt explained that the meat needed to cure in the refrigerators for seven days (one week for every inch of thickness, he explained, and my slabs of pork belly were 1 inch thick). He recommended flipping the bag every day so the flavors can sneak into every nook and cranny. Over the course of the week, the meat should darken and stiffen.

Luckily, Colt had the pre-cured meat ready for my visit. We rinsed the meat to remove some of the excess salt and patted it dry.

Then, we started the smokehouse. Colt said that he modeled his smokehouse off of an old Applachian-style smokehouse he remembered from when he was a kid in West Virginia.

We waited for the temperature to reach around 90 degrees so we could begin cold-smoking. Colt realized that maybe we should have started the smokehouse earlier, but we decided to enjoy the beautiful day while we waited. I played with Colts extremely well-behaved basset hound, who needed a little bit of attention after we kept her so far from the delicious meats.

Staff writer Sam Schipani with Colt Knight's basset hound.

Once the smoke was tumbling out of the smokehouse vent, it was time to hang the meat inside. The porky belly looked and smelled beautiful: meaty divas with fog machine entrances.

Once again, though, waiting was the name of the game. Colt explained that the pork belly would have to smoke for four to six hours (sometimes more he said he takes it out when he likes the color). Some meats even require days to properly smoke.

I nearly panicked. I couldnt play with Colts dog for four to six hours; my editor would kill me. Silly me Colt, of course, was prepared with smoked pork belly that was ready for the next step: slicing. Colt said he even popped the pork belly in the freezer for a while beforehand to make it easier to slice.

Still, I struggled. My knife skills were still lacking, and I sliced the bacon too thick and uneven to properly cook. Colt was patient, but he could tell I was frustrated. He decided to break out the deli slicer. He was a little worried that I might slice my finger off. Little did he know, I was experienced with intimidating spinning blades from my pallet art experience.

Finally, the bacon was ready to cook. Colt hooked up a griddle and added our thick, freshly smoked slices. (Is there anything as musical as the sound of sizzling bacon? I think not.) Ever the gourmand, Colt also grilled the bread in the extra bacon fat.

The first bite of my bacon sandwich (fully loaded with five slices of bacon, carcinogens be damned) was divine. I may not have been abroad, but that scrumptious sandwich felt like the start of a whole new kind of adventure.

Smoking meat can be capital-intensive and time-consuming, but it is immensely rewarding if youre looking for flavor. The food safety concerns are legitimate, but its easier to navigate through them than it may initially seem (especially if you start with tutelage from an expert like Colt). Certain tools will make the process easier and smoother, and they could be expensive or difficult to DIY (Colt said it only took him a few days and some YouTube videos for him to make his smokehouse, but sans carpentry skills, it would probably take longer).

After a smoking lesson, though, I feel like I could smoke my own meat safely and effectively if I had the proper tools. I wonder if my landlord will let me build a smokehouse in my second-floor city walk-up.

Ariel Winter On Weight Loss, Switching Antidepressants, And Getting Motivated In The Gym – Women’s Health

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

Ariel Winter is on a mission for, in her own words, a big butt and Michelle Obama arms. A few more core muscles would be nice, too. I have two abs currently and Im looking to get more, she says.

The ability to transform her body at the gym is a new experience for Ariel. Years ago, it was hard because Id go to the gym with my trainer and because of my antidepressant medications I never saw results, she says.

Eventually, she decided to switch medicationsbut not for aesthetic reasons. I didnt change my antidepressants because I wanted to lose weight, Id just accepted it and it was fine, she says. I got inspired to actually find a medication that helped me as a person and did all the things I wanted it to do.

When she found a combination that worked for her, the Modern Family actress says it felt like it turned back on my metabolism. She admits the weight loss she experienced wasnt something she even worked for, saying it came with medications and happened really quickly.

Yet, it made an undeniable difference in Ariels outlook. When I changed meds, and started feeling better about myself mentally, losing weight was helpful because it made me feel like I wasnt just stuck. I hate being stuck anywhere in life.

The upside wasnt even necessarily her slimmer new frameIve always had curves and I like having curves, she saysbut her ability to finally see more visible results in the gym. Seeing her body changed helped her unearth her workout motivation again, and now she works out three times a week.

Her sweat sessions consist primarily of strength training. Ill do cardio occasionally but Im not looking to lose any more weight, Im looking to gain muscle, she says. I dont weigh myself, I don't care about that.

Ariels not a dieter, eitherin fact, she loves pizza, carbs, and a good cheese platebut shes trying to make a concerted effort to eat healthier. I know eating a ton of cheese, bread, greasy food isnt great for my heart or my insides so Im working on that, she says. These days shes focused on making small changes (think: turkey burgers instead of ground beef) and upping her meal prep game. Im trying to make more foods that will last me throughout the week, she says.

Ariels recent weight fluctuations have made her the target of plenty of cruelty on social media. I think the one thing that bugs me the most is when people say Oh thank god she lost weight, she used to be so fat, she says.

While she used to fire back in the comments of her Instagram posts, she changed gears after a fan pointed out that she spent more time responding to negative comments than nice ones. Its hard not to because Im a feisty person, nobody likes being treated that way, she says.

But shes committed to focusing on only what makes her happyand that includes continuing to crush her workouts in the gym. Im doing something for myself that Im seeing positive results from, and that makes me feel stronger and better, she says. Im feeling more energized and healthier, and its inspiring me to do new things.

Brain Training App Boosts Peoples Willpower And Aids Weight Loss, Experts Say – International Business Times

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

New research suggests that brain training using smartphones could help dieters resist their temptations and prevent weight gain.

The researchers at Cardiff University suggest that using online games to boost willpower among those who are trying to lose weight can help them to cut down around 200 calories per day. It is a "go/no-go" method that involves the participants to alter their responses to unhealthy foods. They asked the study participants to push a button when they were shown an image of healthy food options like broccoli and not do anything when they saw pictures of junk foods like fries, cheeseburgers or crisps. The researchers believe that such games can help to retrain brain impulses and make it easier to resist tempting unhealthy treats.

Experts opine that playing such brain training games for as little as 10 minutes weekly for about a month was sufficient enough to boost willpower and achieve weight loss.

The researchers reviewed several trials using such interventions and they found in one study that overweight individuals saw that their total daily calorie intake reduced by 200. And another study found that snacking on energy-dense foods reduced up to 20 percent within a month alongside weight loss of around 1.5 pounds.

About two in three adults residing in the UK are overweight or obese. The researchers believe that their findings are promising and that they are positive that extensive use of such interventions could help their nation to combat its obesity epidemic.

"A few idle moments could be enough to help dieters improve their daily eating habits," Prof Chris Chambers of Cardiff University and researcher of the study, said. "Smartphones are the most promising way to deliver boosting interventions for encouraging healthy eating because most adults have a smartphone and they can be used during times when we all have a few minutes to spare, such as on the commute to work.

They also used pictures of wine and beer in some studies to help individuals cut down their alcohol intake.

The experts are about to launch a mass trial involving 50,000 participants with a BMI of 25 or above for daily training of 5-10 minutes for around three months. If they find it effective, they will roll out an app soon after.

Robert Rhinehart's LA company has bought out version 2.0 of Soylent, which comes in the bottled liquid form and can be stored up to a year. The drink fulfills 20 percent of the daily requirement of essential minerals and vitamins and has 400 calories. Photo: Reuters/Mike Blake

‘This Is Us’: The Shocking Way Toby (Chris Sullivan) Lost All of That Weight in Real Life – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

Fans of This Is Us truly love Toby (Chris Sullivan) this season, and the producers know it. Hes looking good with all of that weight that he lost. He even has abs now, and hes taken his shirt off two episodes in a row. The weight loss has us wondering how the actor slimmed down in real life. Read on to find out.

Sullivan was already a slim actor when he took on the role of Toby. He knew that he would be playing a bigger character. He actually wears a suit and a prosthetic jowl to play Toby in the first three seasons of This Is Us. Lets let that sink in a little bit while we check out some fan reactions.

One fan on Twitter said, While we love Chris Sullivan, there are plenty of amazing plus-sized actors who could and should have played Toby. There are so few dynamic roles for people of size, and it should have absolutely gone to one of them.

Sullivans costar, Chrissy Metz is one of those plus-size actresses who was lucky enough to snag the role of Kate on This Is Us.

Another fan feels outraged, I cant believe I never realized Chris Sullivan was wearing a fat suit this whole time. I really feel deceived Toby wasnt really fat all along.

Fans were so upset that Sullivan did feel the need to defend himself in an interview.

Sullivan responded to the backlash over the fat suit by explaining that he is an actor and actors wear costumes.

He toldPeople Now, You know, there are different requirements for an actor for different roles.

He continued, As youll find in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Im not actually a space alien. As youll find for Milo Ventimiglia, hes not actually a father. And I think that if people actually had a problem with the way that I was representing this character, or had a problem with the integrity of the character, or the way I was treating this character, then I would really like to have a conversation.

Sullivan is not bothered by fan reactions. He feels as though he is playing the character of Toby with honesty, even if he did not go through the weight loss in real life.

Metz and Sullivan have a great bond in real life. Metz toldThe Hollywood Reporter, [Chris is] so open and hilarious and charming. What you see on the screen has only been cultivated since we met each other. He said, Im on your team, and were in this together and partners.

Metz feels that the role went to the right person. She also is happy that she will have the chance to work on her weight loss. I was kind of like, I hope I get to lose weight. Thats a win-win for me motivated in a different way this time, the actress explained on The Ellen Degeneres Show. It wasnt mandated. It wasnt like, You have to do this. But if this is the storyline, naturally, you would lose weight. So Im excited if that should happen.

Some fans may be outraged, but it doesnt change the fact that Sullivan is doing a phenomenal job with Tobys character on This Is Us. You can catch new episodes every Tuesday night on NBC.

Chelsea Clinton Isn’t Impressed With Jay-Z’s Reaction To Beyonc’s Weight Loss – HuffPost

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

Chelsea Clinton thinks Jay-Z probably could have bowed down a little more to Beyoncs post-pregnancy weight loss journey.

In a new interview with The Cut, the former first daughter shares her thoughts on Homecoming, the Netflix film documenting the singers celebrated 2018 Coachella performance.

Like many women, Clinton was a little taken aback at how blas Jay-Z seemed when his wife proudly showed off her weight loss after giving birth to twins Rumi and Sir. (If youve seen the doc, you know that Beyonc subjected herself to a grueling workout routine and a restrictive, plant-based diet prior to Coachella. Of course, not every woman is super eager to lose weight after pregnancy, but with her performance fast approaching, the Run The World singer was.)

When Bey FaceTimes Jay-Z to show off her progress shes thrilled that an old bodysuit not only fits, but zips up! the hip-hop moguls response is pretty lackluster: Jay offers his wife a smile and a casual all rightttt.

Beyonc, clearly disappointed, replies, All right, just had to share.

Watching that scene, Clinton, whos given birth to three kids of her own, was not having it.

I said [to my husband], Marc, if thats ever me, you better have more enthusiasm, Clinton told The Cut. It wasnt the Im so proud of you. Thats amazing that I arguably think any woman deserves, particularly someone who has clearly worked herself body, mind, heart, soul and spirit to get to that place.

Clintons husband, Marc Mezvinsky, replied, Duly noted.

I was like, I bet every woman watching this has this sense of, she deserves more enthusiasm, she continued. Marc was like, I got it. Can we go back to watching it, please? Weve talked about it three times in the last 90 seconds.

In the doc, the 38-year-old singer talks openly about the sacrifices that went into preparing for such an elaborate, high-stakes show just six months after giving birth.

Reconnecting with her body and mind postpartum wasnt easy, she tells the cameras.

Its my first time back home on the stage after giving birth. Im creating my own homecoming and its hard, she said. There were days that I thought Id never be the same. Id never be the same physically. My strength and endurance would never be the same.

Something tells us Beyonc will appreciate Clintons support, given her history with the family. Both she and Jay-Z endorsed Hillary Clinton during her 2016 bid for the presidency, even bringing Clinton onstage at a Cleveland concert just four days before the election.

Prior to that, former president Bill Clinton stopped by Jay-Zs Made in America festival in Philadelphia, where he chatted with Beyonc and visited the festivals voter registration tent.

‘This Is Us’: Fans Are Outraged at How Kate Treats Toby’s Weight Loss, But They Agree On This 1 Thing – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

Season 4 ofThis Is Usfinds Toby (Chris Sullivan) and Kate (Chrissy Metz) going through a rough patch. They struggle with all of the typical new parent stressors, as well as their baby having a special need.

Toby and Katedeal with these new intricacies of their marriage in very different ways. Toby found that working out has helped him, but Kate is not happy abouther husbands weight-loss. Lets take a look at what fans are saying about Kates reaction. Warning: Season 4 Spoilers

Two episodes in a row, Kate has reacted poorly to Tobys new fit figure. The first time she sees her husband with his shirt off in a long time, she is mad at him. Kate is overweight, to begin with, and the couple met at a support group for people with eating disorders.

Fans took to Reddit to show their disappointment in Kates reaction. One fan wrote, If I managed to lose some weight and gain some muscle, my wife would congratulate me. Kate? Somehow takes it as an insult that Toby thinks shes fat.

Kate believes Tobys health is a reflection of her. She immediately begins to think that she is not good enough for him. He initially hides his workouts from her, which makes things worse.

Another viewer on Reddit wrote, She cant stand the fact that Toby is taking better care of himself. It begins to make us wonder about her emotional state and how she got to this point.

As fans began discussing Kates anger towards Tobys weight-loss, more profound things came about. Season 4 has shown us that teenage Kate (Hannah Zeile) had a boyfriend during her teenage years who seemed a bit controlling. The show has not yet revealed to us what happened with the relationship, but Reddit users have their theories.

One fan started the theory, I have a feeling we might understand more after we find out what happens with her boyfriend.

Then others agreed, writing, I was looking for this take. The last episode shook me, and I think were about to see what really pushed her over the edge. Ive been thinking for a while that theres more to her problems than blaming herself for Jacks death. If they take this story where I think they are, poor, poor Kate.

Users on Reddit have been hypothesizing that something very traumatic happens with Kate and her teenage boyfriend, Marc (Austin Abrams). Some believe he may have sexually assaulted her, while others think he could have been very controlling.

Fans are all in agreement that Kates emotional reaction to Tobys weight loss stems from the trauma that occurred with her and the mysterious boyfriend during her teenage years.

During the season 3 finale, we saw an older Toby without Kate or a wedding band. Fans began wondering if their relationship lasts through the years.

This past weeks episode indeed shows how much Toby is trying to make things work. He suggests a getaway so they can have some intimate time together. Kate is still reeling from Tobys extreme weight loss and fitness, but Toby reassures her that he still loves her and finds her attractive.

The couple certainly has their challenges, but fans want to believe that they will last in the long run. One fan on Instagram wrote, I absolutely love you and toby together from day one! You guys are amazing!

You can watch Toby and Kates relationship play out every week on This Is Us, Tuesday nights on NBC.

Weight loss: Mum loses half her body weight after being fat-shamed by her three-year-old son – The Sun

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

KIDS can make the cruellest comments - and one mum resorted to locking herself in the bathroom in tears after her three-year-old son called her "fat".

Schauna Harshman, 35, said she hit "rock bottom" when her son Chase started mocking her weight and decided it was time to make a change after tipping the scales at 21 stone.

8

The mum, from North Dakota in the US, explained she always felt like "the fat ugly friend" at school and when she first fell pregnant in 2004, she gained over four stone.

I have memories of being made fun of on the school bus, coming home crying and not wanting to go back," she said.

"I also remember wearing Spanx under my clothes at school while all my friends were skinny and pretty. I was the ugly fat friend."

Revealing how she gorged on fried food, processed meals, takeaways and pasta, Schauna continued to gain weight following her second and third pregnancies, reaching over 21 stone by the time her youngest son Logan was born.

8

"I got pregnant at 18 and used that as an excuse to eat and drink whatever I wanted," she continued.

"I gained more than four stone during my first pregnancy. From there I just kept gaining weight with each child.

During my first pregnancy I was eating fast food like Taco Bell and Wendy's, I was obsessed with fries and I was regularly drinking Mountain Dew. Mason was born in October 2004 and as a new mum I most definitely didnt take care of myself.

I was making quick and easy processed meals. I was very uneducated about nutrition as Id grown up eating meat and potatoes, with a lot of canned foods. I never ate anything fresh or homemade, so I carried that on as a mother.

8

8

When I delivered my third son, I was twenty-one stone and one pound, yet he was the smallest baby.

"It was the hardest pregnancy I had because I was hyper aware that I was already big, and my doctor told me that I shouldnt gain too much weight with him.

"I developed high blood pressure while I was pregnant and had a few scares.

"I was also very uncomfortable and had a lot of back and hip pain.

I went from 15 and a half stone in my first pregnancy to over 21 stone at the end of my third.

"With Logan, I was induced three weeks early because of my blood pressure.

I knew people were looking at me, thinking woah, shes big, and Id try to ignore it but couldnt. I didn't leave my house much, if I did, Id wear jeans and hoodies, even in the summer.

It makes me sad that I don't have many pictures with my sons when they were little because I refused to be in them.

8

One day, my middle son was making fun of me, calling me fat and laughing about it.

"I was fed up of my weight but to hear my son, who loves me, make fun of me that way, Id had enough. That was my rock bottom.

I was angry and emotional. Of course, he had no idea the impact it had on me as he was only three.

"I remember locking myself in the bathroom and crying. Asking myself how I was going to fix the problem.

I told him that its not funny to call people fat and laugh about it. He could see I was really upset and he felt sad when he saw I was crying."

8

At a size 28, the mum says she felt conscious of her weight, but when Chase started to mock her size, enough was enough.

She began researching weight loss surgeries and she decided on a gastric band a band placed around the top of the stomach to make it smaller.

Almost immediately, I began researching weight loss surgery," she said.

"I set up a consultation with a bariatric surgeon and we went over the options.

"I had to do a visit with a personal trainer to learn how working out is important.

"I also had to prove that I could lose some weight before my surgery, which I did! I was 17 stone when I went for surgery."

Schauna lost more than five stone initially, but has also tried numerous diets to encourage her weight loss through nutrition.

Since surgery, the mum has improved her diet and now eats eggs, chicken and turkey for protein, nuts, protein shakes and vegetables with every meal.

Now, Schauna weighs 11st 2lb and is a size 12.

8

Having the lap band makes you eat slower, take smaller bites, and you pause in between to make sure your bites pass through the band, so ultimately you end up eating less," she said.

Within a month I joined the gym and I started doing the bike and the cross-trainer.

"I remember only being able to do 10 minutes when I first started, but I was proud of myself for being the big girl at the gym and I wasnt ashamed to be in the gym anymore.

Over the years Ive tried various diets, including shakes, fasting, low carb and keto.

"I lost most of my weight after surgery and through working out. For a good few years I was stuck around 12 stone and knew I had to try something else.

"So, in October 2018 I started a low-carb lifestyle mixed with protein shakes.

8

In January 2019 I started the keto lifestyle.

"I spent some time researching and following accounts and decided to give it a try.

"Thats when I made my @lowcarb.godess Instagram account and started documenting my journey.

Through keto I learned that its about maintaining a lifestyle rather than constantly shedding, so I switched to macro counting, which is what Im currently doing and I feel amazing.

My friends and family are so proud of me and Im so thankful for their support.

"Its given me a real drive to keep going and to show people that you can do anything you put your mind to.

"Im a mum-of-three so Im constantly running around after my sons, I work full time and still manage to track my food, eat homemade meals and work out every day.

"Anyone who sees that I can do it can know that they can too.

A couple of days of eating wont quickly make you gain weight but if left unchecked, it might lead to some health issues. If you are suffering from bloated belly, its easier to treat. The idea is to get on to a detox plan as soon as possible so you stop the problem from growing. Sipping fluids throughout the day is good for your body. But when you are trying to debloat, stay away from caffeine overdose. Also, its a myth that water increases bloating. It doesnt, in fact, it helps in treating the condition. Bloating is nothing but our digestive system holding onto existing water levels. Increasing your water intake sends signals to body that it doesnt need to hold the water and can release it. This makes way for further digestion.

Detox water with ginger, cucumber and lemon can be good to sip on. Skip out on coffee; caffeine dehydrates the body which can aggravate bloating. Also, if you are drinking normal coffee with milk and sugar, it can add to your calorie intake. Thats not what you want while trying to lose weight.

Bananas are great source to debloat. They are potassium-rich and thus helps on cutting down the water retention brining immediate relief to bloated belly. The potassium present in bananas also help in balancing sodium levels in body further aiding digestive functions. Just one banana and you are done. In fact, potassium in banana also prevent absorption of alcohol in body to produce energy. Thus, body digests fats and carbs first as the source of energy. Stocking up on bananas might be a good detox plan.

You hardly feel like eating if you have bloated tummy and it might also seem like a good idea to compensate for all the extra calories you have taken. However, dont do it. It might aggravate your bloating. And the fact is you need food to get through the day, you cant starve and survive. So, rather than skipping meals, focus to eat right. A protein and fibre rich breakfast are two most energy-giving nutrients. They also delay in digestion, keeping you full and treating bloated stomach. You may want to avoid dairy that can bloat you more. With healthy breakfast, try to eat your dinner early to give your body long time to rest before the next meal.
