Using This Gospel: The Black Community’s Skepticism of Kanye West’s New Direction – Billboard

Posted: October 25, 2019 at 11:42 pm

Kanye West starts conversations and debates. Hes provocative by trade -- it gets the people going -- especially over the last almost two years.

The rapper emerged in early 2018 from an uncharacteristic period of quiet sporting a MAGA hat, doubling down on support of Trump, and proclaiming slavery "sounds likea choice. In many Black conversations online, in print and in person, the tone regarding Kanye used to be a bemused but still warm and sometimes empathetic recap of his antics -- a bless his heart. Sentiment is now overwhelmingly enough of him, already, or even a straight f--k Kanye.

When Kanye was just disrupting telethons, crashing award stages, and ranting about fashion conglomerates, there was at least the sense that the rapper was fighting, in his own maybe misguided way, for a greater collective good. Now, after years of extending West grace -- because of the tragic loss of his mom in 2007, because of his mental and emotional health, because of his talent, or just because the Black communitys instinct is to protect our men publicly -- the collective Black we are largely done trying to decipher his motives and intentions.

West, the son of a noted English and African-American Studies professor and a former Black Panther, emerged in the music scene as a semi-conscious rapper, addressing racial inequality, oppression and community ills in his lyrics along with the standard rap fare of money, clothes and women. Music fans who werent of age during the first conscious era of hip-hop in the early 90s found something in Wests music that was missing with 50 Cent, Ja Rule, and even Kanyes big brother and frequent collaborator Jay-Z, the hip-hop chart dominators of the early to mid-00s.

In his 2018 essay for The Atlantic, Im Not Black, Im Kanye, Ta-Nehisi Coates examined Wests seeming separation from his Blackness, and how far away it is from the West fans love: When I heard Kanye [through production on Jay-Zs Blueprint album], I felt myself back in communion with something that I felt had been lost, a sense of ancestry in every sample, a sound that went back to the separated and unequal, that went back to the slave. Now, the man who once famously declared the president didnt care about Black people on live national television has put on a MAGA hat, said it made him feel like Superman, and publicly supported a president whose apathy and abject disdain for anyone other leaves marginalized people as vulnerable as those Katrina victims Bush failed to aide.

Kanyes always said f--ked up or off the wall things, hip-hop writer and historian Dart Adams remarks to Billboard. But this is it. Now, hes doing serious damage. And the thing is, his following is so large and so young he can say the most false thing. The wrongest thing ever. Things that arent even based in fact. But, because Kanye said it, theyre going to defend it.

Harmful is a descriptor often used, now, in reference to Kanyes impassioned, on the fly rhetoric. In his mind, hes just being a free thinker. But theres a correlation to a figure as influential as Kanye continuously comparing being a Democrat to slavery, and the President and his supporters thinking nothing of comparing being investigated to lynching, in every sense of the word. Nah, fam.

For a while, we pondered, What happened to the old Kanye? Che Rhymefest Smith, Kanyes longtime creative partner, co-writer of some of his strongest work including Jesus Walks and New Slaves, and a collaborator on Jesus is King, believes the conversation around West is unfairly limited. I dont know what to tell you about an old person or a new person, he says. Thats Internet banter.

In a similar vein to Wests own arguments about not being constrained to monolithic thought, Smith points to the idea of duality in artists -- essentially being able to view both the person and the art, not just one or the other.

People go straight to Donald Trump [when discussing West]...Who you choose to polarize in terms of how you view a person doesnt make it the whole of that person, he explains. We understand dualism when it comes to Tupac. We understand dualism when it comes to people who are dead, like Nipsey Hussle. But when it comes to politics, our dualism shuts down We are throwing culture and art away over this enemy [of Black people] or the next one. (Smith says he sees no difference in Trump or former VP and current Democratic candidate Joe Biden when it comes to harmful policy.)

But as previously mentioned, Wests contributions to art and culture were a large factor in overlooking things like him using the Confederate flag in his merch, or even saying that Black people need to stop talking about racism. But his Trump support (even as he admitted he doesnt vote, a problem in and of itself), his amplification of harmful rhetoric, and his refusal to listen even to people close to him, proved increasingly impossible to reconcile with the music weve loved. The current national climate that doesnt allow the luxury of half-baked and incendiary public dialogue, and West has been in Calabasas for a long time. To some, thats part of the problem hes untethered from the Black community, in a bubble of privilege.

T.I. went to talk to Ye about his Trump support, and was shocked to learn that West wasnt even aware of some of the administrations more harmful policies, like the travel ban. "He loves the thought of [Trump].... he defied all odds and in his mind, that's how it is, Tip told The Breakfast Clubs Charlamagne. He don't know the things we know, because he has removed himself from society to the point that it don't reach him." In a conversation about Wests visit to the White House last year, former S.C. State Representative and CNN commentator Bakari Sellers put it more succinctly: Kanye West is what happens when Negroes dont read.

Smith called West out publicly last year for losing sight of his roots and community, but then reconciled with his friend and brother. Right after that public argument... Kanye came right back to Chicago, and made some investments. And it wasnt about me, it wasnt about Dondas House (charity), it was about Come back to your village... Kanye came and sat at my dinner table, and I said, How long has it been since you sat at my dinner table? Thats my problem with you and our brotherhood. And he was able to say Yeah, man... I f--ked up.

For years, we made up our own excuses for Kanye, needing to identify an impetus in his erraticism. Its the Black ethos of --you got the family, and you got the black sheep of the family, and they do things that make people look at them crazy, but theyre still part of the family, Adams explains. Weve applied that to Kanye because we believed he can still be saved; theres still good in him.

Now, weve had to start accepting maybe that this is just Ye. In late 2018, Michael Eric Dyson, who has authored books about Tupac, Jay-Z, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and Barack Obama, echoed the sentiments of many: Kanye had become indefensible. This is time for us to say Kanye, we as African-American people cannot stand idly by while you give cover to a man who is proved to be a white supremacist. Black media outlets published eulogies and obituaries to the Kanye we embraced -- and who embraced us back. Or at least to the person we thought that Kanye was; as writer and Morehouse professor David Dennis, Jr. pointed out, A lot of the sadness isn't about who Kanye has become but for the realization that he's been this person all along.

The level of public criticism and condemnation of West from Black people is breaking long-standing rules of engagement in our community. The collective we have historically been hesitant to abandon support of prominent Black figures, because the odds are already heavily stacked against them, and we expect mainstream media to jump at a chance to paint them in a negative light. Thats a large part of the reason why R. Kelly and Bill Cosby went so long without real public outcry, and why there are still some who staunchly defend them.

(Kanye) was harmful five years ago. He was a serious problem three years ago, Adams insists. Im beyond belief that people are still supporting this guy and showing up on HBCU campuses They should have been like, You cant say all of this s--t, and do all of these things, and we still support you.

However, the ideology that tearing a Black man down is a bigger problem than anything said Black man did is crumbling in the era of public accountability, or as its critics call it, cancel culture. Kanyes latest transgressions; treading on our history by minimizing slavery, and co-opting spaces Black poeople carved out to be able to express our Blackness freely and safely -- the Black church and the Historically Black College/University -- with messaging about getting rid of the 13th amendment and not making choices based on skin color, are too alarming to not call out.

Although his mother was raised Baptist and his father was referred to as a pastoral counselor, West didnt grow up in the Black church, so as Sunday Service has grown from an invite-only Holy Ghost jam session in Calabasas for Ye and Kims fellow VIPs, to an actual church experience, scrutiny has increased.

An appeal to the Black church is part of the redemption playbook for disgraced Black celebrities. Michael Jackson, who had his own complicated relationship with Black folks at the height of his pop stardom, sought the refuge of the First AME Church of Los Angeles a day before appearing in court to fight child molestation charges. O.J. Simpson, who famously separated himself from his Blackness after he became one of the first true celebrity athletes, was met with a warm welcome in D.C.s Scripture Cathedral after his acquittal, with the churchs senior pastor exclaiming, If he wants to return home, the Black nation is here to receive our brother. Even R. Kelly would churn out inspirational fare like You Saved Me, and appeal to the Black community and church base at his moments of highest scrutiny. At a glance, its easy to assume West is doing the same, but the difference is, Kanye is offering no apologies nor asking for forgiveness.

Black folks are wary of whether theres any oil, as we say (anointing, spirit, biblical grounding) on Sunday Service. Even though Black millennials have left the church in larger numbers than previous generations, some traditions of the Black church are embedded in their spirits, including the power of worship through song, evolved from slave spirituals and messages of freedom. Worship is sacred. But, maybe proving the point of those who say the Black church is too quick to forgive, some argue that we cant condemn a mans spiritual journey out of hand.

Brittany Packnett Cunningham, a national voice for Black activism and change and the daughter of two ministers, was invited to a Sunday Service months ago in Calabasas. She believes Kanyes intentions, at least, are genuine. From what I saw, I feel like Kanye is genuinely trying to come into relationship with God, she tells Billboard. In as much as someone can judge anothers walk with God -- which is to say, not at all -- I dont take for granted that talking about your spirituality is not always welcome in pop culture.

However, she adds: That said, I am deeply worried about how the platform is being used. I had some hope -- until I researched the church Kanye has been attending and the pastor hes been learning from. That church seems to follow a clear philosophy of white evangelicalism, which has been repeatedly harmful to Black people, people of color, LGBTQ people, and women.

Shes referring to Adam Tyson: the young, evangelical minister West has credited as his spiritual leader in his radical rebirth as a Christian. Simply having Tyson take a place of honor with him in the pulpit of Black churches is making some uneasy. And perhaps because West doesnt have roots in the church, his take on the worship experience feels performative to many. His intentions may be genuine, but the execution is lacking.

Wests take on a full gospel project, Jesus IsKing, finally dropped this morning after almost a months delay. A companion IMAX film of the same title is in theaters today, as well. Many have heard the music already, as Kanye has incorporated it into his services and hosted listening sessions over the last several weeks. Critics of Kanyes last effort, 2018s Ye, noted that he didnt appear to have much to say that hadnt already been examined in 2016s The Life of Pablo. Now, fans and critics alike are eager to learn how hes translated his spiritual journey into his art.

On the question of West remaining canceled by Black people, Kanye himself refuted critics while at Howard University's homecoming -- one of the most popular HBCU homecoming weekends in the country, on a campus commonly referred to as the Mecca -- asking the crowd Do I look canceled to you?(Attendance wasestimated at being "in the hundreds," but aerial shots inspired public comments about a small turnout.)

Smith believes the responsibility of making amends with West and who he is, is on us as consumers and fans. I pray that the public can look at how they may love or hate an artist and then apply that -- working out that confusion -- to how we deal with our aunties, and our brothers and our mamas, he offers. And use that to heal ourselves, and our own guilt about how we treat ourselves sometimes. Our own hypocrisies. This is what art is; its a reflection of the society that we live in. Perhaps what upsets people about Kanye so much, is what we see of him in ourselves.

When Smith is asked if he thought West owed any explanations or apologies to the Black community, he responds, laughingly, No one owes anybody anything. However, he amends his statement: But we need each other and we gotta stop throwing each other away so easily.

Time will tell if Black fans and former fans will adopt the same spirit. Or maybe Smith, who takes issue with the public elevating artists to leaders, is right that some responsibility lay with our penchant towards celebrity pedestaling, and the pressure that puts on artists. As Coates notes, (For) Black artists who rise to the heights of Jackson and West, the weight is more, because they come from communities in desperate need of champions When brilliant Black artists fall down on the stage, they dont fall down alone.

Packnett Cunningham respects West, and is among those hopeful that hell grow into the potential of his work. I hope Kanye listens to his people, his elders, historians and the fans whove been with him since Day 1, she emphasizes. (Its worth noting that he did rejoin his original manager, John Monopoly, for a period last year, but it didnt last.)

All of us are open to his spiritual journey -- we want Kanye to be his best self," Packnett Cunningham continues."We just want to make sure its not used to demean our enslaved ancestors and promote an administration that continues to do us harm. Thats antithetical to a Biblical understanding of who Jesus Christ is.

Woman claims eating all-meat diet helped her lose weight post-pregnancy heres why thats not healthy – Yahoo Food

Posted: October 25, 2019 at 9:46 am

Apregnantmom of two says that eating an all-meat diet also known as the Carnivore Diet helped herlose weightpost-birth and cleared up heracne.

The 26-year-old mom, Sara Zielke, told theDaily Mail that she struggled to lose weight after having her first two children. She heard about the meat-only diet and decided to try it back in October 2018, sticking to eating only meat, including organ meats such as liver, along with some eggs and dairy. Zielke says that, before becoming pregnant with her third child (she is 17 weeks along), she had lost 30 pounds and her complexion cleared up.

The benefits that I personally have experienced is a satiated appetite, amazing body composition, cleared up and brighter skin, calmer mood, greatly improved energy levels and absolutely no pain in my body, the Wisconsin native told the publication.

Not really. Stacey Pence, registered dietitian atThe Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that restrictive diets like these are not healthy. Food elimination diets or very restrictive diets generally are not recommended for overall health unless you havefood allergies, intolerances or a specific medical condition where it might be recommended to avoid or eliminate certain foods, Pence says.

She continues: If limiting your diet to only meat, you will be missing out on a variety of other nutrients, includingphytochemicalsfrom our plant-based food sources that may improve immune system and reduce inflammation, to name a few benefits. There are many other individual nutrients that an all-meat diet would be lacking.

According to the 2015-2020Dietary Guidelines for Americans, research showsthat a diet rich in plant-based foods (fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains) can reduce your risk of developing chronic disease. For a cancer-protective diet, theAmerican Institute for Cancer Researchrecommends limiting your animal proteins to one-third or less of your plate and filling two-thirds or more of your plate with fruits, vegetables, beans and/or whole grains.

Pence also points out that pregnancy is not the time to be so restrictive with your diet. Nutrients are our babies building blocks, and this is not a time I would recommend following an elimination diet or very restrictive diet, she says. This is an even more critical time to get the nutrients in from a variety of sources for fetal development.

However, its not exactly surprising that, before becoming pregnant, Zielke would lose weight on a mostly meat diet. Even if ones eating style isnt considered balanced and healthy, its still possible to lose weight. Weight loss is just a matter of energy a.k.a. calorie deficit, explains Pence. If you do any food group elimination or portion reduction, you will be reducing calories, which leads to weight loss. A reduction of any macronutrient carbs, protein, fat can lead to calorie deficits, causing weight loss.

And on restrictive diets, carbohydrates are usually the first ones to go. Unfortunately, carbohydrates are often given a bad rap, says Pence, who explains that its preferable to get carbs from low-fat dairy, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. Carbohydrates are just one of the three macronutrients that provide calories in our diet. If you consume a carbohydrate-heavy diet, which leaves you feeling less satiated, it can cause weight gain, but any macronutrient (carbs, protein, fat) in excess can cause weight gain.

Pence notes that while many people often exceed the recommended portion of carbohydrates, which can lead to weight gain, she adds that carbs are not the enemy often our portion sizes are!

The mom also claims that the all-meat diet cleared up her acne. But dermatologistNava Greenfieldof Schweiger Dermatology Group in Brooklyn, N.Y., tells Yahoo Lifestyle thats unlikely. An all-meat diet is very difficult, she says, and there is little to no evidence that it will clear up acne.

However, Pence notes that there are animal sources high in vitamin A, such as beef liver and cod liver oil, which may help improve skin. The vitamin A in these food sources are a pre-formed vitamin A known asretinol, which may improve skin health, she says. Retinol is often found in skin care products.

In general, though, Greenfield says, Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet will optimize the appearance of your skin, while excessive alcohol, diets high in theglycemic indexand avoiding entire food groups can leave your skin looking dull and unhealthy. Your skin needs nutrients and vitamins to function properly and those are mostly obtained through diet.

Greenfield says that a daily multivitamin can be beneficial if you arent eating well-balanced meals, but the best diet for maintaining good skin is to drink plenty of water, eat healthy and diverse foods and avoid too many processed foods with chemical ingredients. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be plentiful and alcohol intake should be moderate.

Building the Cavaliers: Diet, workouts play critical role in Virginia’s football success – The Daily Progress

Posted: October 25, 2019 at 9:46 am

Its international night at JPJ Dining Hall.

Athletes from various Virginia teams pour into the room, rocking Cavalier gear and perusing tonights menu.

A wall is lined with dishes from different countries, including a Nigerian-inspired recipe of Jollof rice and plantains and a German Schnitzel, which is the talk of the dining hall.

Football players are among the athletes who frequent the dinners on the second floor of JPJ.

While fans see the product Bronco Mendenhall and company put on the field every weekend, they rarely get a glimpse into the work that goes on behind the scenes. Building a winning program requires more than excellence on game day. It requires consistent dedication on and off the field.

It also requires a lot of food.

When fans and media members cite stats about UVas success this season, the linebackers are quickly mentioned. Charles Snowden, Jordan Mack, Zane Zandier and Noah Taylor are among the four best linebackers in the entire ACC, but that wasnt always the case.

Last year I was just getting thrown around, Taylor, a sophomore, said. This year its not the same. Its not as easy to just push me around.

Taylors growth, both mentally and physically, isnt an accident. Shawn Griswold, Virginias director of football development and performance, and Randy Bird, UVas director of sports nutrition, have helped build Taylor, and the teams linebackers, into dominant ACC athletes.

After noticing his lack of size hurting him as a freshman, Taylor worked to add weight. He credited Griswold and a bulking program for his success this season.

Taylors diet is one that many college students employ.

If its food, I put it in my mouth, Taylor said.

Taylor checks in at about 215-220 pounds after playing at 205 pounds a year ago. Snowden weighs 235 pounds, and the junior fills out his 6-foot-7-inch frame better than he did as a 200-pound recruit coming out of high school.

While Zandier and Mack havent had quite the same physical transformations, theyre both stronger and more complete football players after years of learning from Griswold.

Griswold doesnt have one philosophy for strength training. The experienced trainer believes different players can succeed with different workout plans.

Logically, this makes sense. Wide receiver Joe Reed wants a different body type than someone like tight end Tanner Cowley. Reed and Cowley may do similar lifts and programs, but the volume and weight on those lifts may vary to help both excel at their respective position.

Griswold frequently monitors the work rate of his players. He doesnt want players maintaining where theyre at during the season, but rather constantly improving their strength and conditioning.

Were trying to play for an ACC Championship, a bowl championship and however far [the season] takes you, Griswold said. Its going to be November, December and then hopefully sometime in January. Really, youre still trying to make progress as best you can.

While this can be difficult for starters because of the on-field toll they take during the season, young players not expected to see the field much receive significant in-season strength training reps to get them to UVas base expectation.

Griswold mentioned that players such as running back Mike Hollins and other freshmen are on different training plans than players such as Reed or Bryce Perkins. Those younger players train three days a week in addition to their other football practices.

This helps explain the growth of players like Snowden and Taylor. While fans and media members focus on each weeks game and the present state of the program, Griswold works diligently to build Virginias future.

Hollins might not play a major role this season, but the work is being put in for the running back to become one of the ACCs best in the coming years.

The coaching strategy, which focuses on developing individuals as not only football players but also as athletes, is a key reason why Mendenhall and company have turned UVa into an ACC Coastal Division contender.

Given the amount of work done inside the weight room, nutrition becomes critical. UVa athletes have access to the dinners at JPJ Dining Hall from Sunday-Thursday. The hall is closed on Fridays and Saturdays as many teams are competing or traveling on weekends.

While not every night is international night, theres variety in the meals that are served each day. The football teams captains speak with Bird regularly to discuss meals and the requests of the team. Bird does his best to accommodate.

Additionally, Bird helps develops meal plans for players who come to him with specific fitness goals. Bird then helps design a plan that each player will enjoy.

If you look at our linebackers, between Noah Taylor, Elliott Brown, Charles Snowden, they all have very similar body types, Bird said. So their nutrition plans are going to be similar, but theyre still individualized based on their preferences because I could put together the quote, unquote, perfect meal plan, but if its foods theyre not going to eat, then obviously its not perfect plan, right? So you have to account for their individual preferences to allow them to get foods they like and will eat and still meet their nutrient needs to see the results that they want to see.

Like a parent trying to get their young child to eat vegetables, this can be challenging.

Even though Bird helps create meal plans and is in charge of getting food for the team before and after games, hes not constantly monitoring their diet. This is why he only creates individualized meal plans for the players that proactively seek it out.

If someone wants to gain muscle or shed fat, they can come to Bird and hell help develop a plan. He doesnt do this for players who dont seek out his advice, as they might not need the guidance or likely wouldnt follow through on the plan.

Considering the age of the players and the diet of an average college student, Birds plans are reasonable for young adults to follow. Hes fine with players enjoying cheat meals or eating something thats not quite as beneficial as a typical team meal.

What I tell them is, generally, if they can stick to it 90% of the time, theyre going to see results that they want, Bird said. I dont want them to be following a structured plan 100% of the time, because then it is more like a diet.

Bird wants his players feeling free to be college students by eating the occasional unhealthy meal. He specifically implements that idea into his plans.

So that way it builds in, I can go get Mellow Mushroom pizza, and its not going to hurt me, Bird said. Or I can go to Ben and Jerrys, and its not going to hurt me, as long as theyre keeping it to 10% and not letting that expand to 30%.

With Griswolds strength program and Birds emphasis on eating well, the team works diligently behind the scenes to prevent injuries. Part of the reason Griswold monitors his players work rate is to ensure he doesnt overwork the athletes. He wants to build up players to the elite strength and conditioning standards of the program while also making sure key contributors are fresh for games.

Birds nutrition work is continuous. As UVa players leave the practice field, two giant bins holding Gatorade and water wait for them. They then receive protein shakes and have yogurt and fruit available once theyre done showering.

He supplies the team with a pregame meal that usually consists of beef, chicken, pasta and fruit, but he stressed that most of the nutrition work comes during the week. Players need to put in tremendous work to prepare for each ACC game, and that requires fueling themselves accordingly.

Griswold and Bird communicate frequently to discuss the best training options for players and the logistics of feeding the team on road trips. The duo puts in significant work behind the scenes to put the players in a position to succeed. While they wont receive many major headlines or awards, theyre more than happy to watch the players succeed.

These dudes, they work so hard, and they work really hard in the classroom, Griswold said. I think across the country, [people] dont really understand that to go to school at UVa, no matter what sport you play, youre unique. Its not that easy. Its pretty incredible what these student-athletes do.

Its unlikely Griswold and Bird would recognized in public by UVa fans, but the two unsung heroes are critical pieces to the football foundation Bronco Mendenhall is building at Virginia.

Evan Antin: The Real-Life Diet of the Internet’s Favorite Veterinarian – GQ

Posted: October 25, 2019 at 9:46 am

Honestly, it wasnt so different from what I do these days. Ive been fairly consistent over these last 20 years or so. Its split muscle groupsa chest day, arm day, legs and back. Back then, I was just learning how to use the weights and move weights while getting the correct form down. Youre much more vulnerable to hurt yourself when youre an adolescent and training like that compared to when youre an adult.

How long do your workouts last nowadays?

Im usually not in there for more than an hour. I stay pretty busy and do a lot of supersets. I start losing that pump and that fullness when I go too much beyond an hour, hour and a half.

So when youre not traveling, what does an average day look like for you?

Im not so much of a morning personIll wake up around 10 oclock if Im not going to the hospital that day. Ill have a big breakfast, do some paperwork, and try to train in the evenings. But if Im at the hospital, Ill go work out on my lunch break at my local gym, which is less than a mile away. Ive got a long lunch break, so theres plenty of time to get a good workout in. It varies a lot.

You said you have a big breakfastwhat does that entail?

Ive been eating a lot of those Impossible Burgers lately. Ill have like three of those.

Are you a vegetarian?

No, I just dont eat a lot of animal products these days. I try to be responsible if I do eat them. Its tough, though, with how much I travel, to be a vegetarian. You just dont have a lot of food options in a lot of places. You have to make choices sometimes when youre in the middle of the Congo and they give you chicken soup or something.

I try to bring nuts and snacks to keep me going. My overall diet is fairly low on the carbs side, but man, when youre traveling and you only get rice and beans, youve got to ask yourself if you want to eat anything else.

Do you have a favorite local dish youve encountered on your travels?

Yeah, on my last trip to the Congo, they have this spice that they put on a lot of their dishes called pili pili. I like spicy food, and thats one of my favorite spices from anywhere in the world. I got a little carried away with it and made myself a bit sick after the first day I had it. But man, that stuff is yummy.

What about something youve tried that you had to say, respectfully, I cant finish this?

I was studying abroad in Tanzania and did a homestay with the Maasai. They had just slaughtered a goat by asphyxiation, and then they cut it opennice, lukewarm goat abdomenand gave me chunks of blood that had clotted, as well as raw goat kidney. It was a really nice gesture, and they were doing it out of respect as a guest of theirs. But yeah, I could only have so much of that before I had to respectfully decline to have more. Raw, fresh goat kidney texture isdifferent. Theres nothing else like it.

I can imagine. You mentioned you dont eat many carbsthat aside, are you tracking your calories when youre overseas? Or is that the least of your concerns?

Ive never really counted calories. Ive just been more focused on macronutrients and nutrient timingI try to focus my carbohydrates before and after working out. Spikes your insulin a little bit, gives you a nice pump; youre full and burning some calories. And after you work out, eating carbs can feed your muscles more effectively for a little bit longer. I try to eat somewhat clean, but Im not crazy clean. What that means for me is a high-protein, high-vegetable diet. Im very liberal with fats, and I really just pay attention to how many carbs Im eating.

Low-Calorie Diet: Drinking This Cumin Tea May Do Wonders For Weight Loss And Detox – NDTV Food

Highlights

Picture this. You have been resisting junk food for quite some time now. Haven't had desserts in a while. When your friends ordered a greasy burger, you opted for a salad but you also ordered a cola beverage to go with it. Aerated drinks and sugary beverages are ladenwith empty calories that we often do not keep a track of. Liquid calories could have a negative impact on your weight loss goals to a great extent. But that does not mean you remain thirsty. Dehydration is in fact even worse. Not drinking enough water has been linked to weight gain. Ideally one should have up to eight glasses of water every day, but if the plain taste of water bores you, there are plenty of healthy and low-cal options to keep you hydrated. Mixing a few kitchen herbs with water could give you instant detox drinks at home. Take, for instance, this cumin tea or jeera tea. This herbal concoction may do wonders for your skin, digestion, immunity, heart health and weight loss.

Cumin or jeera may help rev up the metabolism naturally. Faster metabolism is associated with steady weight loss. Jeera or zeera could help ease indigestion, bloating and acidity. Good digestion is key for weight loss. According to clinical nutritionist Rupali Datta, when digestion is poor, the body is unable to absorb and assimilate nutrients properly. It may also hinder waste elimination from the body. This in turn could slow down the metabolic rate, which makes it difficult for the body to burn calories at a faster rate. Therefore, by facilitating good digestion, cumin helps healthy weight management too.

Diet detectives: Scientists identify new signposts in blood and urine to reflect what we eat and drink – Newswise

Newswise Researchers at McMaster University have identified several chemical signatures, detectable in blood and urine, that can accurately measure dietary intake, potentially offering a new tool for physicians, dieticians and researchers to assess eating habits, measure the value of fad diets and develop health policies.

The research, published in the journal Nutrients, addresses a major challenge in assessing diets: studies in nutrition largely rely on participants to record their own food intake, which is subject to human error, forgetfulness or omission.

This has been a major issue in nutritional research and may be one of the main reasons for the lack of real progress in nutritional sciences and chronic disease prevention, says Philip Britz-McKibbin, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at McMaster University and lead author of the study, which was a collaboration with Dr. Sonia Anand and colleagues from the Departments of Medicine, and Health Research, Evidence, and Impact.

Scientists set out to determine if they could identify chemical signatures, or metabolites, that reflect changes in dietary intake, measure those markers and then compare the data with the foods study participants were provided and then reported they had eaten. The specimens analyzed were from healthy individuals who participated in the Diet and Gene Intervention Study (DIGEST).

Over a two-week period, researchers studied two contrasting diets: the Prudent diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains, and a contemporary Western diet, rich in trans fats, processed foods, red meat and sweetened beverages.

Researchers were able to validate a panel of metabolites in urine and plasma that correlated with the participants consumption of fruits, vegetables, protein and/or fiber.

We were able to detect short-term changes in dietary patterns which could be measured objectively, says Britz-McKibbin. And it didnt take long for these significant changes to become apparent.

Britz-McKibbin cautions that food chemistry is highly complex. Our diets are composed of thousands of different kinds of chemicals, he says, and researchers dont know what role they all may play in overall health.

In future, he hopes to broaden this work by examining a larger cohort of participants over a longer period of time. His team is also exploring several ways to assess maternal nutrition during crucial stages of fetal development and its impact on obesity and metabolic syndrome risk in children.

The study was funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Genome Canada, Labarge Optimal Aging Initiative Opportunities Fund, and the Faculty of Science at McMaster.

Ashley Darby Shares Everything She Eats In a Day – Bravo

Posted: October 25, 2019 at 9:46 am

Ashley Darby is over the moon to be a mama. But as sweet as motherhood has been, the Real Housewives of Potomac newmother had to admit that pregnancy tasted just like unicorn-shaped marshmallows. In the video above, the then-pregnant yoga guru walked BravoTV.com through all the things she was eating and drinking in a day and Lucky Charms was at the top of her list.

Mind you, most of Ashley's pregnancy diet was pretty clean. She started off her day with warm lemon water, celery juice, and a bowl OK, three bowls of Lucky Charms. "I don't like sugary cereals, Baby Darby likes sugary cereals," she quipped.

Throughout the day, Ashley made sure to eat frequently to keep her nausea at bay. "I try to have healthy snacks, but the reality is, sometimes chocolate just calls my name," she confessed. The rest of her cravings were healthy, though: She ate plenty of watermelon, oranges, and bananas.

For lunchtime, the then mama-to-be was all about veggie burgers or fried fish sandwiches (MdDonald's "heavenly" version was a fave.) When dinnertime rolled around, she tried to get insome greens but might have had some more Lucky Charms instead on occasion. And before Ashley goes to bed each night, she and hubby Michael cap the day off with a particular sweet treat they're both obsessed with.

The trouble with the Petersons’ ‘carnivore diet’ – The Spectator USA

Posted: October 25, 2019 at 9:46 am

One of the odder statements of Canadian self-help supremo Jordan Peterson is that his health problems have made him so sensitive to food and drink that when he drank some apple cider he did not sleep for 25 days straight. This, if true, would mean that he had doubled the record for the longest time of constant sleep deprivation. Insomnia? It happens. Cider-induced insomnia? Perhaps. Cider-induced sleeplessness that would make the inmates of Guantanamo Bay look well-rested? I can believe he thinks it happened but I cant believe it happened.

Peterson adopted an all-beef diet on the advice of his daughter, Mikhaila, who had been following a similar meat-based diet in what she claims was a successful attempt to treat her chronic auto-immune problems. Peterson pre claims that the diet has worked for him as well. Perhaps it has. I am no scientist and have no reason to dismiss his carnivorous claims.

Still, I have grown irritated as the Carnivore Diet has risen in prominence. The Paleo Diet, which was practically plant-based in comparison as it included nuts, fruits and vegetables, must have been exhausted as a content mine as now the Carnivore Diet is everywhere. What will be next? The Cannibal Diet? (Dont give people ideas.)

As a vegetarian, I am of course biased against it, but I was irritated with the similarly radical restrictionist raw vegan diet for many of the same reasons. They might work for some people. Who am I to tell them otherwise? If nothing else, cutting out white sugar, white starch and vegetable oils must have at least some positive effects on health. But the grand, quasi-magical claims that people make for these diets, and their promotion by obvious fools and mountebanks, make me bare my fangs.

In a sense, the carnivore diet appears to have prospered as an inversion of the vegan diet. People who think vegans are a pious, judgmental and pathetic kind of people are attracted to its opposite, and people who enjoy the positional good that is adoption of original, innovative, counter-intuitive lifestyles enjoy distancing themselves from a culture that is becoming more attracted to the idea of meat as wasteful and indulgent. Shawn Baker, an impressively enormous and outspoken doctor who has advocated for the carnivore diet, enjoys ranting about the fucking bullshitting, lying, guilt causing, worthless sack of shit vegans who are fucking winning in a God damn war for the future. Tens of billions of animals are slaughtered every year and global meat consumption has tripled but, yes, the vegans are winning.

Notably, some of the most vocal advocates of carnivore diets came from the odder fringes of the vegan movement. Shawn Baker hailed one longtime vegan who put dogma aside and embraced the carnivore diet without realizing, perhaps, that the YouTuber was known for bizarre experiments like drinking turpentine. The ex-vegan soon transitioned to a raw meat diet before abandoning the whole carnivore thing. Some people are hooked on dogma, and the radicalism counts for more than the content.

As much as they dislike veganism, some proud carnivores are setting themselves up as gurus with the same presumptuous and exploitative behavior that has characterized their raw vegan cousins. Take Mikhaila Peterson. I have no reason to doubt Ms Peterson when she claims that her all-meat diet fixed her health problems. My issue arises when she claims, on the back of no formal education or systematic research, that her anecdotal evidence has given the authority to pronounce on other peoples health problems, and not out of charity, but for substantial.

Peterson has set up what she calls the Lions Lair. (Should that not be Lions Den? Never mind.) The Lions Lair is a private group for people who are trying to fix their health conditions through a carnivore diet. The website is not just a little kooky, it is downright bonkers.

You dont get better through the medical system, Peterson writes, you get medicated. Now, in some cases, to be fair, this might be true. But Petersons website makes no distinctions between cases. Diabetes? Cancer? Munchausens Syndrome? Dont go to a doctor! You get better by taking that responsibility onto yourself and mainly changing your diet and lifestyle.

Ms Peterson does not say her diet will cure cancer, of course, but by accident or by design she heavily implies it. This lion diet that healed me works for everyone, she writes. It works for everyone! And it does not simply cure sickness! It makes us optimize ourselves:

You get healthy and you change your mindset and doors open. Everywhere. Opportunities become endlessThe people in the Lions Lair are super humans or trying to be and they will get there because I can actually devote some time to helping them

Yes, Mikhaila Peterson can make you a superhuman! And all for the low, low price of wait for it $599 a year. This, Peterson tells us, is a huge discount. What kind of elite services can this woman be offering? Personal daily access to me, live videos, live q and as, and there will be access to twice yearly meet-ups somewhere crazily fun. Personal daily access? Will they have her on speed-dial or will it be a glorified Discord server? Either way, where is this $599 a year going? To a high-end steakhouse, perhaps.

If you really find that meat lots of meat improves your health I cannot tell you otherwise. I am a vegetarian for ethical reasons, and suspect that at least some claims about the unhealthiness of animal products end up overcooking the vegan pudding. I would suggest, though, that if some of the worlds healthiest people from the Japanese to the Greeks have had diets based to a significant extent on grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits, it is implausible that the vast bulk of us, at least, are suffering from meat deficiency. I would also suggest that radical diets can lay the foundations for conmunities, which, as I have written, are thin social networks based on the wild claims of false prophets and the keen hopes of the vulnerable. Just a thought into which to sink your teeth.

Avoid eating dairy products/chocolates/oily food if at all you are suffering from pimple outbursts. Avoid eating food/vegetables/fruits that you are allergic to.

The diet has to include food that will mineralize your system. Along with fruits and vegetables include sprouts and paneer (cottage cheese) in your diet. You can also eat brown bread or rotis with the vegetables.

Ensure that your chicken and fish is grilled or in salads. Combine it with vegetables to make sure that it is easier for digestion. Your system will be cleansed and mineralized.
