In January 2016, Kari Hammond stumbled upon her 15-year-old daughter, Alexa, crying. When Hammond asked Alexa what was wrong, she said she was worried about her mom because Hammond was so overweight at 5 foot 5 inches tall, she weighed 217 pounds. And, Alexa was also afraid shed grow up to be "fat."

It was kind of a come-to-Jesus moment for me, Hammond told TODAY.

But Hammond had been overweight since she hit puberty and wasnt quite sure how to lose it. She had tried loads of diets where shed lose weight and then gain that weight back and then some. She decided to ask her mom, who always exercised and ate healthy foods, what to do. Her mom, Randi Longmeier, gave Hammond four recommendations:

I tried a lot of different things than these four things [in the past], Hammond said.

But this time she followed her mom's advice and started by cutting sugar. After eating no sugar for two weeks, she downloaded an app, Lose it! to track all of her calories and her exercise. Next she started tabata workouts, high-intensity training with a 10-second break between each 20-second interval of exercise. At first, she could only work out for 10 minutes before she felt exhausted. But she kept trying and built up her stamina.

In a few weeks, the weight started coming off quickly. But then it leveled off.

It was a really steady loss for me, she said.

When Kari Hammond's daughter, Alexa, told her mom she was worried about her health because Hammond was so overweight, Hammond decided to get healthier.

As she continued losing, she altered her goals to match what she was doing. Originally, she thought shed like to be at a health body mass index, which was 150 pounds. After reaching that, she adjusted and lost more weight and now weighs 135 pounds.

In total, she lost 78 pounds. Being flexible helped her be successful. She also added some muscle by doing tabata-style exercises for 40 minutes and walking for an hour each day.

I used to think I had no time for exercise. Forty minutes of exercise is four percent of my day, I can give myself four percent of my day, she said. That was life changing.

For the past nine months, she has been maintaining her loss. She still relies on the four suggestions that Longmeier gave her and learned she was stronger than she realized.

I can do really hard things, she said. Health is important and I want to live a long time.

In less than a year Kari Hammond dropped 78 pounds by following four tips her mother gave her.

Hammond provided tips to others hoping to lose weight.

When the number on the scale doesnt budge, it can feel overwhelming. Thats why Hammond looked at other wins during her weight-loss journey. She celebrated milestones, such as feeling more comfortable in a chair, having a noticeable collarbone or seeing one chin instead of two. This kept her from feeling frustrated.

Logging every single thing she ate and her exercise helped her lose steadily and keep the weight off.

I am super consistent. I have literally logged every single thing I have eaten for 450 days, she said. I am that dedicated to this process.

There are days when Hammond eats twice the calories she was supposed to eat. When that happened in the past as she tried losing weight, shed give up. Now, she takes a more realistic approach.

Since losing 78 pounds, Kari Hammond finds that she enjoys being active and has a harder time just sitting on the couch.

I made many mistakes, she said. I recognize it and move on from it.

7 ridiculous questions dieticians get asked All. The. Time. – VOGUE India

Posted: August 16, 2017 at 4:46 am

As nutritionists, we are constantly subjected to various kinds of people who have been struggling with weight loss. Thanks to the freely circulating (mis)information there are plenty of myths being created all the time. Here are the seven of the most frequently-askedquestions that dieticians receive, with myth-busting responses for each.

So, Ill definitely lose at least one kg a week, right? No one can guarantee your weight loss except you. A nutritionist can prescribe you an eating pattern and keep changing it based on your bodys response, but if you simply make your own changes and increase or decrease your calories on a whim ,your weight will definitely fluctuate. Besides, all of us do not have the same metabolism, so while some people can lose weight quickly, others may do so at a much slower rate, and asking your nutritionist for a guarantee is like asking her to predict when it will rain next.

Is all of the food you want me to eat calorie-free?Some people fool themselves into believing that when the label says diet food, it means virtually no calories. Remember, apart from plain water, there is no food that is calorie-free. Anyone who says otherwise is fooling you.

If I have a night of binge-drinking planned, can I detox the next day and lose weight? Our bodies are naturally equipped with detoxification processes that are working 24/7, which is why we perspire and pass out all the waste from the body. When you drink alcohol, you may eat lighter food the next day to feel less clogged up, but this is not going to help lose the calories that are now stored in your system. The best way to rid yourself of these calories is to exercise and burn them off.

Im going for an all-you-can-eat buffet dinner; is it okay if I go to the gym for two more days this week to burn the calories? If only things were so simple. Exercising a little extra the week that you eat morewill not help rid you of those calories. Whats more, if you are not consistent with your workout, your metabolism is not going to rise either. Exercise is not something you can store in your body but calories are easily stored, so dont switch one for the other.

How long do I have to follow the diet? I can eat everything after I lose weight, right?Going on a diet to lose weight should mean a lifestyle change, and this change should be permanent. If you are a person who keeps going on and off diets, you will constantly find yourself losing and gaining weight constantly. It is not a great idea to only look at the calorie value of food, instead start looking at food from the point of view of nourishment and what makes you fitter, and you will find making healthy choices far easier.

It was diet food so I ate a few extra helpings. Why does the scale not show any weight loss? The diet food tag itself somehow makes people fail at their diets. Dont fall for gimmicks that promise no-sugar, low-fat, fat-free or sugar-free labels. Usually, one ingredient is simple replaced with another and the calorie values are altered only very slightly. If you end up eating too many portions of this food you will end up making up for those calories anyway.

I ate a large meal, but I swear I had a diet soda with it. Is that okay? This is the weirdest logic. You are reducing the calories you get from sugar, but what about all the extra fat that you have consumed in your big meal? Topping it with the artificially-flavoured drink may ease your guilt temporarily, but it wont do anything for your waistline for sure.

The bottomline is to eat healthy because it is good for you, not because your dietician wants you to. And whatever plan you get on, make sure its one you can keep up with, even when your excess weight has dropped.

Inside an appointment at Seattle Children’s Gender Clinic – KING5.com

Seattle Children's hospital opened one of the first clinics for transgender kids in the state nearly a year ago, and now hundreds of patients from multiple states are seeking its services.

For many kids like Michael Hefferan, the Gender Clinic has opened the door to a new life.

"It was about ninth grade that I came out to everyone at school with my family," Hefferan said.

The 17-year-old remembers hearing about a doctor at Children's who treats trans teenagers and demanded to see him.

"I was pretty much like, 'We need to schedule this as soon as we can. I don't care if it's on my birthday. We need to go in and we need to meet him,'" he said laughing.

Now more than 10 appointments in, Hefferan is here on a Tuesday for a routine checkup.

A nurse takes his vitals, checks his height, weight, and his blood pressure. As part of his transition, the Bothell High School student has been on hormone replacement therapy.

"My voice has gotten a lot deeper," Hefferan said. "I've grown some facial hair. I guess I feel more masculine in my body. I don't know how or why, but I do."

He keeps his medication in a plastic box. A syringe, a notebook where he keeps track of all his injections, his small bottles of testosterone, and band-aids. He administers the shots to himself once every two weeks.

"I just do it right in my stomach, an inch away from the belly button," he said.

This doctor's visit will help determine how the hormone therapy is working.

The appointment is mostly an open dialogue between doctor and patient. Dr. DavidBreland, who heads up the Gender Clinic at Seattle Children's, asks Hefferan how he's feeling, checking in on Hefferan's physical and emotional health.

"Are you dating anyone?" Breland asked.

"No," the teen answered.

The doctor also checks on the impact of the testosterone. Hefferan said he's been noticing facial hair. Breland notes his patient doesn't seem to have any acne.

Hefferan's mom has witnessed dramatic changes in his mood.

"He is so much happier," said Rayna Hefferan. "He's not as mad or as angry at times as he used to be."

Happiness is the goal, according to the clinic's director, and to have the outcome of the particular hormone.

"For testosterone, a lot of my patients want a deeper voice, they want some hair, they want more muscle mass, etc.," said Breland. "And a lot of my patients want to be as 'stealth' as possible. They want to be in the community and perceived as that gender."

"My chest is one of the things that make me most uncomfortable with my body," said Hefferan.

He now binds his chest, a technique used to minimize the appearance of a person's breasts.

"Top surgery is something I've always really wanted from the beginning," said Hefferan. "Just because I bind every day and it's not always the most comfortable."

Seattle Children's does not offer surgeries but provides referrals. For Hefferan, the procedure is on the horizon.

For now,Breland tells him to stay on the same dosage of testosterone, as they wait for his blood test results.

Hefferan is thankful to have a clinic who treats his true self.

"It's really important for the younger kids who come here to have that affirmation that you're okay," he said. "That there is nothing wrong with you for not feeling comfortable with the gender you were assigned when you were born."

Each patient goes through a mental health readiness assessment before starting treatment.

The Gender Clinic now has 250 active patients and hundreds more inquiring about treatment.

Keep summer weight loss on track with Scottish Slimmers’ top 20 healthy tips – Scottish Daily Record

Posted: August 15, 2017 at 7:45 am

Are you guilty of overeating during the summer holidays?

Now that were back to our normal routines, here are Scottish Slimmers 20 favourite ways to stay on track to your weight loss.

Eating less processed food

Choose more fresh food, cooked whenever you have time. Get some fresh produce on to your menu. Youll feel better as you eat better!

Get Real

Losing one or two pounds a week is a realistic, healthy rate of weight loss. It took you weeks to gain, it will take the same time to lose. Have patience.

Stay away from fizzy drinks

Sugary soft drinks wont make you feel great and may not even quench your thirst. They can really be a major cause of weight gain. Go for sugar-free every time or even better, move to fizzy water instead.

Count to 10

The average craving lasts about 10 minutes. So before you cave, do something else for 10 minutes and see if your craving passes. Start a rotten job youve been avoiding declutter your mail pile, tackle your ironing mountain. When you complete that, its a great achievement and that will cheer you up too.

Go brown

Chose wholegrain pasta, rice and bread when you can. It will fill you and can really help you lose weight more quickly than the white varieties.

Write yourself notes

To help you stay on track, post notes to yourself on the fridge and the pantry. Put up a little stop sign or make tags with questions like: Do you want this food enough to wear it? and: Are the calories worth the consequences?

Try smart swaps

Look for nutritious alternatives to sugary treats. Frozen grapes instead of sweets. Choose popcorn instead of crisps.

Give yourself a break

Nobody is perfect, so expect to make mistakes along the way. If you overeat one night, just get back on track in the morning by focusing on whats worked for you in the past.

Get support

Our motivation lasts about three weeks then we need to get someone on side to help us along the way. Get someone to do it with you or join a slimming group. Youll do better than trying alone.

Put your make up on and get dressed up even if you are not going anywhere. If you are going out somewhere special and you do your hair and make-up and put on a lovely outfit, how do you feel? Yes, you feel fantastic, so why not do that every day?

Be Active

Each week, add five minutes of activity to your daily routine until you work up to the recommended 30 minutes per day. Your health deserves half an hour a day.

Add some salsa

If you dont like traditional veg, chop up some tomatoes, onions and a little fruit, like pineapple, to add to your meals and snacks.

Ease up on the alcohol

Remember that alcohol has hidden calories. The worst offenders are creamy cocktails, which are the same as drinking a rich dessert. If youre trying to lose weight, choose something else.

Add an egg

A little protein prolongs the feeling of fullness better than carbohydrates or fats do.

Portion distortion

Pull out the measuring spoons and cups, because its easy to misjudge portion sizes. Half of your plate should be vegetables.

Eat two pieces of fruit for every day. How you eat them is up to you, in a smoothie, baked as part of a dessert or for breakfast.

Concentrate Research has found eating while reading, watching TV or looking at a screen not only means you eat more at that meal, youre also more likely to snack later. Your brain hasnt logged what youve eaten.

Soups are so quick, easy and seasonal

Of course you can have soup all year around but autumn is widely recognised as the best time of year for a warming, hearty bowl of soup. Get batch cooking at the weekends and freeze some for a lazy day and you cant go wrong.

Weight loss diet: Eating dinner for breakfast could help you shed fat fast – Express.co.uk

Posted: August 15, 2017 at 7:45 am

Research from Loma Linda University suggests the best way to lose weight comes down to the frequency and timing of meals.

Dr Hana Kehleova, one of the studys authors, said the bottom line is to make breakfast the biggest meal of the day, have a medium lunch and then a small dinner.

Data from more than 50,000 adults was collected by researchers at the university to form the study.

Nutritionists then analysed the adults eating habits and weight over a seven-year period.

The results revealed four factors help decrease BMI - eating one or two meals per day, fasting for 18 hours, eating breakfast and making breakfast or lunch the largest meal of the day.

The findings were released in the Journal of Nutrition.

The study authors wrote: Our results suggest that in relatively healthy adults, eating less frequently, no snacking, consuming breakfast, and eating the largest meal in the morning may be effective methods for preventing long-term weight gain.

Other experts have stressed the importance of eating breakfast.

Milton Stokes, R.S., author of Flat Belly Diet! For Men, recently revealed eating breakfast is essential for weight loss.

Explaining why, he told Mens Fitness: Its like putting logs on a woof-burning stove. You need that initial input of fuel to get your metabolism going for the day.

The aim should be to intake around 400-600 calories within an hour of waking up.

Milton advised focusing on protein, healthy fats and fibre, as these will leave dieters feeling fuller for longer.

Jorge Cruise, author of The Belly Fat Cure, advises people eat eggs with avocado in the morning.

He said: Avocados are natures ideal fruit for weight loss. They replace sugar with appetite-curbing good fat.

David Grotto, R.D., author of 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life, says a shake with whey protein is the way forward.

He said: Whey is rich in branches chain amino acids, which stimulate muscle growth. The more muscle you have, the greater the fat-burning capacity of your metabolism.

This could be the REAL reason you’re gaining weight it’s nothing to do with diet – Daily Star

GETTY

One of the biggest decisions of your life could be making you fat, new research reveals.

Settling down or tying the knot can come with many benefits, but it could also make you gain weight.

This finding comes from a new study by the University of Baths School of Management.

The researchers used over a decade of data from 9,000 men in the United States and found married men had a significantly higher body mass index than single men.

The most significant weight gain occurred after these married men became fathers for the first time.

However, the researchers found men who divorced in those ten years had a significant drop in their BMI following the divorce.

TOWIE's Lauren Goodger shows off the results from her fitness regime in a bikini on the beach.

Lauren Goodger picture in February on the left, and again in May, is almost half the size after losing weight

Study author, Jordan Syndra believes the reason you gain weight in a relationship is because you might start to eat meals more regularly, or find yourself in more social situations with food.

Jordan added that people who are single might want to stay that way in order to stay fit.

She said: It's useful for individuals to understand which social factors may influence weight gain, especially common ones such as marriage and parenthood, so that they can make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

The researcher continued to say that men who want to be mindful of their BMI should practice a healthy lifestyle.

For married men who want to avoid BMI increases that will mean being mindful of their own changing motivation, behaviour and eating habits.

Given major public health concerns about obesity, understanding more about the social science factors that can cause weight fluctuation is important.

5 People Have Died After Getting Weight-Loss Balloons – SELF

Posted: August 15, 2017 at 7:44 am

In the few years they've been on the market in the U.S., weight-loss balloons have been making headlines as a cheaper, less intense alternative to invasive weight-loss surgeries. However, according to an FDA alert posted last week, the gastric balloons may come with unforeseen consequences: Five people died in 2016 within weeks of receiving their balloons.

"All five reports indicate that patient deaths occurred within a month or less of balloon placement," the FDA alert reads. "In three reports, death occurred as soon as one to three days after balloon placement." Of the five patients who died, four had received the Orbera balloon, which is manufactured by Apollo Endosurgery, and one had received Reshape Medical Inc.'s dual balloon system. A third type of balloon, the Obalon, has also recently been approved by the FDA, but was not linked to any deaths in the report.

Essentially, the balloons are inserted via the esophagus, placed in the stomach, and inflated with saline for six months, Amir A. Ghaferi, M.D., assistant professor of surgery at the University of Michigan, tells SELF. "They occupy space in the stomach and give a sensation of fullness, the idea being that patients will eat less [without altering] their anatomy in any permanent way." But, he says, the balloons are far from perfect. In addition to causing nausea as your stomach adjusts to having a foreign, inflatable thing inside, these balloons might come with even more serious side effects.

The new FDA alert comes just a few months after the agency advised health care providers to pay especially close attention to patients receiving the balloons. In that letter, sent in February of this year, the agency detailed two major complications connected to the balloons: over-inflation and acute pancreatitis, an infection in the pancreas. If the balloons become over-inflated, they can cause stomach pain and difficulty breathingand may need to be surgically removed.

However, the FDA hasn't identified exactly what caused each death. And the agency can't say for certain whether or not the weight-loss balloons actually had anything to do with the deaths. So, for now, it's simply reminding everyone that serious complications are possibleand that doctors should monitor their patients closely after giving them the balloons.

"Patient safety is a key priority in everything we do at Apollo Endosurgery and we take adverse event reporting obligations related to our products very seriously," Todd Newton, CEO of Apollo Endosurgery said in a statement. "The FDA letter is an important reminder to the physician community that obesity is a serious disease and many obese patients are affected by one or more co-morbid conditions due to their obesity," he continued, suggesting that the company believes it's these other conditions that contributed to the deaths.

Dr. Ghaferi also points out that this is a relatively small number of cases compared to the hundreds of thousands of people who have gotten the balloons successfully worldwide. He also wonders whether the intense scrutiny the balloons have received is due, at least in part, to our society's bias against those seeking treatment for obesity. "Every time there is a treatment for obesity that's different from diet and exercise, people feel like its a cop-out, it's a shortcut," he says. "Its not viewing obesity as the chronic disease that it is that requires treatmentsometimes invasive treatment."

Obviously, the balloons aren't the right choice for everyone. But people looking for any kind of treatment deserve access to safe, reliable options.

7 Legumes You Cannot Ignore Because Of Their Weight Loss Aid Properties – South Florida Reporter

Posted: August 15, 2017 at 7:44 am

Youll hear the term legumes a lot when it comes to food and dieting. Legumes are often recommended to people who want to cut out carbs or meat. Theyre supposed to give you a range of nutrients and benefits.

Theyre excellent for weight loss. Legumes help to give your body sustained energy, keeping you feeling fuller for longer. Youll also consume fewer calories than you would if you ate carbs or even some meats.

But you dont just want to spend your time eating any legume. You want to eat these specific seven ones for their weight loss aid properties.

Stock Up on Chickpeas

The first legume you want to add to your diet is the chickpea. Also known as garbanzo beans, chickpeas are full of nutritional benefits but are lower in calories than many other legumes out there. Theyre also excellent for substituting grains and carbs while keeping your energy levels support throughout the day.

Its the fiber count in chickpeas that helps the most. Fiber is a necessary food group that keeps your digestive system working. The body finds it harder to break down fiber than carbs and fats so that it will get rid of it slowly. Youll feel fuller naturally since the body isnt able to get rid of the food. With the slower breakdown, youll also find that you dont get the sugar rush that many carbs will give you.

The fiber will also help to support the digestive system. When your digestive system is working effectively, your body absorbs all the right nutrients and will balance the hormones. The immune system works properly, meaning your mental and physical health benefit. You wont give into the emotional food cravings as much as if you didnt eat chickpeas, helping you keep your calorie intake down.

Hummus is made with chickpeas. Its a popular dip for vegetables, and you can make it at home. You can also roast chickpeas with multiple flavors to get the perfect snack. Of course, you can also add whole chickpeas to casseroles, soups, and other recipes.

For those who arent over-keen on the texture of chickpeas, try soaking them for a while. This just helps to soften them when eating raw.

This Is How Long It Takes Most People To Lose 10 Pounds – Women’s Health

Posted: August 15, 2017 at 7:44 am

Its definitely good to hear that it takes most people longer than five weeks to drop 10 pounds (you're not alone if the scale seems stuck!), and that its also doable within three months or so. But if youre trying to drop 10 pounds, its important to keep this in mind: Everyone moves at their own pace.

There are calculations to predict the calorie deficit needed for someone to lose a pound of weight. However in reality, people lose weight as different rates, says Beth Warren, R.D.N., founder of Beth Warren Nutrition and author of Living a Real Life With Real Food. Fatima Cody Stanford, M.D., instructor of medicine and pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and obesity medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, agrees. Its not the rate of weight loss that matters, per se, she says. Its the sustainability of the weight loss. People who are obese, for example, might lose weight at a very fast rate, she says, while others with less excess weight to lose may move at a slower paceand the actual rate doesnt matter as much as someones ability to keep the weight off.

While its tempting to want to drop weight quickly, Warren says its important to manage your expectations and go about it in a smart, healthy way. Losing weight through unhealthy methods could just burn off water and muscle weight, which youll quickly gain back, she says.

Scott Keatley, R.D., of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy, recommends starting with small changes before moving on to a new challenge. For example, you might want to try eliminating your late-night snacking habit and adding a serving of vegetables to every meal before trying an entirely new diet plan. "Many patients want to do everything all at once to lose the weight but it's generally not feasible and people give up after a brief period of time only to gain more weight back," he says.

Check out some of the weirdest weight-loss trends through history:

If youre not losing at the pace youd like, Warren says theres likely somethingor several thingstripping you up. I often find with clients that they may not be losing as fast as they can because of small allowance they are making, she says. That can mean having portions that are too large, eating pasta or bread at all meals and during a snack, eating too much later in the day or at night, or treating yourself too often. Typically, if someone is already trying to lose weight, there isn't one glaring issue, she says. Instead there may be multiple small points to adjust over the course of the day concerning their diet.

Whatever youre trying to do for weight loss, Stanford says its important to make sure that its sustainable. Often patients will say that they want to try a certain diet or exercise plan, but I say that if this works for you, youre going to have to do it for the rest of your life, she says. Losing weight on a special diet only to regain it can put your body at a higher set point for weight, she explainsand that can make it even harder to lose it all again. Its important to ask, is this going to be sustainable indefinitely? If not, reconsider the approach, Stanford says. Make sure its something you can continue forever.

If youve already lost the weight and want to make sure you keep it off, Warren recommends keeping a food log and striving to work out regularly. The reality is that after you lose the weight you want you look to be more flexible on food choices, she says. By keeping a food log, it keeps you on track to notice when you are allowing yourself too many less healthful choices or bigger portions too often. Working out regularly also helps you balance out your flexible food choices without making you feel guilty for it, she says.

Of course, people lose weight at different paces. If you notice that a friend is losing at a faster rate than you, dont get discouragedyoull get there eventually, too, and doing it your way will help you keep it off.
