Sugar Addiction? – Pacific Northwest Inlander

Posted: August 2, 2017 at 12:42 am

I heard someone recently refer to sugar as a drug. Is that true?

The technical definition of a drug is a non-food substance that alters physiology. Sugar (table sugar, sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup, and a plethora of other names) could be considered a food, but I think it is also important to consider that it is a highly refined and purified substance that does not occur in nature.

This purified substance could in many ways be considered to be a drug, or at least drug-like. It has an impact in the same area of the midbrain as do drugs of addiction. Its highly rewarding properties, beyond that of taste, signal our brains to consume more, which is what many of us do. When consumed, sugar also causes an increase in insulin levels and triggers many other physiologic signaling pathways.

In the body, sugar is broken down into two different simple sugars. Overconsumption of refined sugar has been linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and inflammatory diseases. Unfortunately, it is added to an estimated 75 percent to 90 percent of all processed foods, and is also widely available and offered to us in an unrelenting fashion in almost all retail stores. You will notice that it is strategically placed in the checkout aisle!

There is a raging argument about how much sugar we can safely consume, but almost everyone agrees that it is now widely overconsumed by most people.

So yes, sugar is drug-like, and it is best to limit consumption, and be mindful of its omnipresence in our modern diet.

A Bad Night’s Sleep Could Be The Reason You’re Gaining Weight – soFeminine.co.uk

Health and Fitness

By Helen TurnbullPublished on 31 July 2017

There's nothing worse than counting down the hours until you're safely tucked up in your bed only for you to be tossing and turning, unable to drift off, when you finally get there. As if the inevitable tiredness and resultant bad mood aren't enough to contend with, a new study has discovered a bad night's sleep could lead to weight gain.

The reason you're gaining weight could be down to a lack of beauty sleep and not the daily post-lunch, desk-snack binges we're all guilty of. According to new research, people who regular get less than nine hours of solid sleep at night can (so that's basically all of us) can gain up to 3cm on their waists.

Dr Laura Hardie, Reader in Molecular Epidemiology at the University of Leeds, headed up the research which questioned 1,615 adults about their lifestyle habits, including how long they slept each night as well as what their diet entails. Researchers also assessed the participants' overall metabolic health - blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and thyroid function in order to inform the connection between sleep and weight.

The results revealed that those who slept for roughly six hours per night had waist sizes approximately 3cm wider than those fortunate enough to kip for nine solid hours. More worryingly was the fact that accidental night owls were found to be 'heavier' than both sets of participants. But researchers are keen to point out that no direct link between lack of sleep and bad diet was discovered. However, it does support previous evidence that less sleep can lead to metabolic conditions, such as diabetes.

If you need a valid reason to give up that habit of scrolling through Instagram for hours before bedtime, this is it.

What do you think of these findings? Let us know

New Oakland DOT Tackles Pedestrian Safety Fix – Streetsblog San Francisco (blog)

Posted: August 2, 2017 at 12:42 am

Robert Bennett of Resource Development Associates, a consultancy for public and non-profits social justice advocates, was walking his dog in the crossing at Harrison Street and 23rd on Friday, June 2 when he was fatally struck by a motorist.

And now, finally, construction is underway to improve this crossing.

The crosswalk was a known danger spot. Not only was there no curb-cut on the eastern side of the crosswalk, but it dead-ends into a tree. Visibility is poor, motoring speeds are typically high, and its not accessible to people with disabilities. For some time, advocates had been pushing the City of Oakland to fix the situation.

From a statement from Walk Oakland Bike Oakland:

We were founded in 2007 advocating for safety improvements one block away. Now, ten years later, no improvements have been made to Harrison Street north of Grand Avenue, a far too dangerous street as currently designed as a freeway connection between downtown Oakland and 580. It needs to be fixed right away.

The situation is made more acute by the proximity of the Downtown Oakland Senior Center. The pedestrian crosswalk over Harrison Street at 23rd Street is missing any curb ramp on the east side along with a complete connection to the sidewalk, and needs an upgraded/modern curb ramp on the west side, wrote Robert Prinz, Education Director, Bike East Bay, in his own letter to Oakland DOT staff. He added that it needs to at the very least be made accessible via the curb improvements, and ideally safer via crosswalk pavement lights and preferably a road diet on Harrison Street.

Improving this crossing is nowNicole Ferraras joband her first project since leaving her position as executive director at Walk San Francisco to join Oaklands newly formed Department of Transportation as its Vision Zero coordinator. Streetsblog met up with her at 23rd and Harrison late last week. This will start with a painted median, blubouts and posts, and hopefully planters, she said of efforts to calm this stretch of Harrison and improve the crossing. It will also be Oaklands first trapezoidal crossing (see diagram below) which will allow pedestrians to get across safely without forcing the city to remove the tree. In addition, all u-turns or left turns will be eliminated. She also hopes planters may be used instead of plastic posts.

This is what can happen when you actually have a Department of Transportation, she said of Oaklands newly formed department. She also praised the DOTs new head, Ryan Russo. You have someone who wants to get things done and done in a responsible and responsive way for the community.

More will be coming. And Oakland was already in the middle of a series of safety improvements for the streets surrounding Lake Merritt. Anyone whose passed by Lakeside, Harrison and Grand has seen the construction. We just adopted the citys pedestrian plan, with priority projects and lots of work planned for East Oakland, repaving 98th, Fruitvale Avenue, and others, she explained. The push will be on to get things done quickly. In fact, Ferrara came to the site with a can of paint and a small roller to try out some samples on asphalt.

All of this, of course, is too little, too late for Bennett, who is survived by a wife and five children. But lets hope due to the tireless work of advocates, and more improvements to come under Oaklands new DOT regime, future tragedies will be prevented and known danger spots will be fixed before, instead of after, someone is hurt or killed.

Amanda Keller, 22, grew up very skinny but never strong and in shape.

When she fell pregnant, Amanda panicked at not gaining any weight during the first half of her pregnancy and went on over-indulge in junk, gaining three stone eight pounds, resulting in her highest weight of 13 stone six pounds and a UK dress size of 14.

After months of severe chest pains, visiting the hospital several times with high blood pressure and fearing for her and her daughter's health, Amanda decided to make a change.

She found Kayla Itsines' Bikini Body Guide (BBG), and followed her workout routine as well as lowering her junk food intake. Amanda lost four stone six pounds in just 21 months and landed on the slender weight of nine stone and a UK dress size two.

Since being introduced to BBG, an eBook containing 12 weeks worth of 28 minute resistance workouts, all aspects of Amanda's health have improved.

The Arizona, USA, local said: I felt really sluggish and unhappy with my body. I wasn't happy with how the weight made me feel; physically and emotionally. I also had no energy.

"I decided to lose the weight because of two reasons; one - I just didn't like being overweight. I was a stay-at-home mum when I started working out and before I was working out, I was very depressed.

"Another reason was that I was constantly having severe chest pain for months. I went to the hospital several times and I had high blood pressure, but they could never figure out the chest pain.

"I was really worried, since I had a young baby at the time, so I decided to try to become healthier to see if that would help - and it did. The chest pain went away after losing the weight.

"I'm so much more healthy now. I don't have chest pain anymore. It helped me get out of my slump of always being indoors and depressed. I have so much more energy to keep up with my daughter now.

"I feel more positive about myself. I am proud of what I've accomplished. I've always liked playing sports a bit but I never liked running or workouts.

"I feel like I'm a much healthier person than I've ever been in my life. I'm much more positive and I feel as though I can get more done every day because of the energy it gives me."

Amanda admitted changing her diet has been the most difficult part of the weight loss process.

She said: I don't diet but I just try and remind myself when I go to grab an unhealthy snack to find healthy alternative instead.

"I didn't workout at all before, even before my pregnancy. I wasn't overweight before I got pregnant, but I was weak and had no muscle.

"I was very out of shape and would be out of breath from the simplest of activities. Now I workout three times a week and I can handle a lot more.

"I think the hardest part of losing weight is watching what you eat. It's hard to change unhealthy eating habits.

"A lot of people are surprised at how much I've lost and will ask me what I did in order to lose weight.

"My husband and friends are proud of me. I always tell people that my goal now is not to lose more weight, but to gain muscle. I am aiming to be strong, not skinny.

"Ease yourself into it and expect a few fall-backs. I gave up and started back up again several times. It's OK to take a week break if you feel like you need it.

"Do not be too hard on yourself. Also, to stay motivated, take progress photos. When I am not feeling motivated to workout, looking at my progress helps me get back in the mood to workout.

"I would also say drop all fizzy drinks, juices and alcohol. I only drink a cup of coffee in the morning and water for the rest of the day. I very rarely ever drink alcohol. We don't have fizzy drinks or juice in the house."

How An LBI Hot Springs Spa Can Help With Weight Loss – TAPinto.net

Posted: August 2, 2017 at 12:41 am

SHIP BOTTOM, NJ - Research has shown that losing weight and keeping that weight off is challenging. Out of the 50 million Americans who start a diet each year, just one to five percent manages to keep lost weight off.

For overall health and wellness, and for effective weight loss, doctors emphasize the adoption of healthy habits like exercise, cutting alcohol intake and managing stress as much as food choices.

Did you know stress can cause weight gain? Your hot tub can help lower your stress level, and in turn, help you lose weight.

Sign Up for E-News

Hot tub use is a very effective stress management technique. Here, we discuss how warm water hydrotherapy in your hot tub helps to keep stress at a manageable level.

HOW STRESS MAKES US FAT

The stress hormone cortisol

The hormone cortisol translates environmental signals into physical responses. Faced with a threat, this hormone helps body and mind to make the fight or flight decision. While this alarm system was incredibly beneficial to our ancestors, their stress was intermittent. Quick, stress-inducing incidents punctuated predictable routines among well-known family and friends.

Todays career and family pressures, on the other hand, trigger stress almost constantly. High stress levels exacerbate other debilitating conditions, including obesity. The American Psychological Associations on-goingstudy on stressin America has revealed that stress is the new normal for most of us. Columbia University'sFirstWorldHappinessReportranks the United States below 24 other countries in average life satisfaction.

Persistent, cortisol-triggering stress leads to weight gain for a number of reasons.

Lower stress leads us to eat better, take the time to exercise and interact with friends more often. Use your hot tub as a tool to combat stress.

LET YOUR SPA LOWER YOUR STRESS

Our owners rave about how well the spa helps them relax. One HotSpring Grandeeowner explains, every time I get in it, I get that 'died and gone to heaven' feeling, Ahhhh!!! A HighLife Sovereignowner says, My husband and I look forward to our relaxing, quality time together in the spa about 5 nights a week! Hydrotherapy is a wonderful thing!

These owners hit on the bodys physiological changes that come withimmersion in warm water. The raised temperature dilates blood vessels, and blood flows more easily. The heat and additional buoyancy lets the heart beat with increased power and steadiness. Improved circulation delivers oxygen rich blood tomore parts of the body. Soakers feel better overall.

But wait . . . theres more! When the heart pumps blood more easily, breathing slows. Controlling breath, a central aspect of meditation and mindfulness, has a calming effect. Deep, regular breathingreduces cortisol secretion. Lower cortisol can lead to fewer cravings for fatty, salty and sweet foods.

IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF YOUR SLEEP TO LOWER STRESS

Millions of Americans struggle to sleep at least one night each week. The hot tub is a powerful sleep aid. People can get away from the white-light-emitting screens that interfere with the brains ability to kick into night mode.

Stress can keep any of us awake. Even worse, sleepless nights can lead us straight to the fridge.

Before-bed hot tub soaks elicit the relaxation response, calorie-free.

Time in an outdoor hot tub is relaxing

University of Utah cognitive behaviorist Dr. David Strayerbelieves that time in nature allows the prefrontal cortex, the brains command center, to dial down and rest, like an overused muscle. He found that as the brain enters a more relaxed state, production of cortisol decreases.

In a similar study, Japanese researchers sent 84 subjects to seven different forests. They dispatched the same number to city centers. The forest explorers experienced a 16 percent decrease in cortisol, a 2 percent drop in blood pressure, and a 4 percent drop in heart rate.

Our bodies canrelax in natural surroundings.

The hot tub can transport you to a place under the stars, experiencing your natural surroundings. One hot tub user found that It is a fabulous relaxing experience to be in the spa at night looking up at the stars as the snow comes down around us. Another relates, We can gaze down on the trees below or up at the stars and it's always a heavenly experience. The sights of trees and stars have profound physiological effects.

Did you know that justone in 10 American teens spends time outside every day? The endless responsibilities parents have keeps adults indoors as well.

The hot tub gets owners outside in full view of the majesty of nature. Who knows what youll see from your hot tub: shooting stars, a swooping owl. Even staring at backyard flowers for a few minutes can spark a sense of wonder that makes life rich.

EXPLORE THE STRESS AND WEIGHT CONNECTION

For years, this nation has asked, Whats behind Americas obesity epidemic?

Its all of these, but many researchers now conclude that stress many be the primaryunderlying cause of obesity.Given the amount of stress we experience today, a hot tub could be the relaxing reward to the battles we engage in every day.

I Cut Carbs Out Of My Diet For 30 Days, Here’s What Happened – The Alternative Daily (blog)

Posted: August 1, 2017 at 3:43 am

Carbohydrates are the macronutrient that fuels your body. In fact, they represent over 50 percent of Americas daily calories. Carbs are a complicated mixture of sugars, nutrients, fiber and calories. But all carbs are not created equally. Too much pasta, cookies and starchy carbs can lead you down the road to stress, weight gain and overall poor health. So, when I found myself packing on the pounds, depressed and retaining water due to a sluggish thyroid, I decided to go cold turkey literally.

For some, cutting out carbs may seem drastic. For me, I needed to see positive changes, fast. When it comes to dieting, Im more of a fast and furious type of gal. After a drastic reduction in carbs I noticed some extreme changes in my body and health. Some were awesome and motivated me to push on. Others, not so awesome, which is why I only chose to follow this diet for one month.

The carbs I chose to cut from my diet included sugar (and anything that contains sugar), potatoes and all starchy vegetables, rice and pasta, wheat breads, crackers and cookies, legumes, fruit, milk and of course all junk food. Although, I cut out the starchy and sugary carbs from my diet, I still included lots of healthy greens like broccoli, kale and spinach. I also indulged in homemade ground almond or coconut flour biscuits. However, I also eliminated any extra salt from my diet, and even avoided salty foods like bacon and processed meat. Heres what happened.

For someone like myself who struggles to lose a pound due to hypothyroidism, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself losing weight, quickly. In fact, in the first week, I lost eight pounds! I know what youre thinking water weight. Lets face it, we are much more diet-savvy these days. So, its understandable that critics of low-carb diets would suggest the weight loss is attributed to water weight. And they would be right, at first anyway. But, thats not such a bad thing. Retained water can add 10, 20 or more pounds to a persons body, depending on how large the person is.

The initial weight loss is exciting and a definite motivator, but it eventually slows to one, two or three pounds per week. By reducing calorie-dense carbs, you reduce the calories you consume daily, which forces your body to burn fat stored around your midsection. After one month, I lost 19 pounds in total!

After long days in front of the computer, it was common for me to look down and see that my feet were somewhat swollen. The Mayo Clinic suggests that mild cases of edema or water weight may be the result of sitting or staying in one position for too long, eating too much salty food and even premenstrual symptoms. For me, it was all the above. I propped my tootsies up and tried various herbs, but nothing seemed to relieve the swelling. However, when I cut carbs from my diet, I noticed that my feet no longer swelled up.

Theres good reason for that. Diets high in carbs and sodium force the body to store water between cells. The average person retains about 1.5 pounds of water weight just from carbs on a regular basis. When you overdo the carbs, your body naturally increases water. But, your body doesnt really need this extra water. So, when you cut out carbs, your body eliminates the excess water, resulting in weight loss.

When you cut carbs to the bare minimum, your body enters a state called ketosis, where your start burning fat for fuel instead of the usual carbs. Funny thing about ketosis, it turns your breath a bit funky. And, since it comes from within, no amount of brushing or flossing can change that.

No surprise here, sugar is highly addictive and extremely difficult to quit. Ive never smoked, but I imagine that it may be as difficult as quitting cigarettes. In fact, it may be worse. And boy did I struggle through cravings. One study from France shows that sugar addiction may induce reward and craving that are comparable in magnitude to those induced by addictive drugs. In retrospect, cutting carbs and increasing good fat is probably one of the healthiest and easiest ways to quit sugar. After one month, sugar had lost its appeal. I now prefer natural sweeteners and rarely choose processed sugar.

Few carbs and too much protein left me bloated and constipated. I was no longer getting the fiber I was used to and that meant I was no longer regular. Its probably the worst thing I experienced when cutting carbs. However, a little senna tea went a long way for relieving my symptoms.

When youve been living off carbs as a primary fuel source, its no wonder that your body needs to adjust to a low-carb diet. If it wasnt for my morning coffee, you probably would have found me snoring, face-down on my keyboard. When carbs are limited, the body begins to feel weak and energy becomes depleted. As your body adjusts to the lack of carbs, it soon switches from burning carbohydrates for fuel to burning fat. This requires extra energy, which not only left me feeling lethargic but also a little brain dead.

My brain needed carbs to stimulate the production of the mood-regulating hormone serotonin. When I removed carbs from my diet I felt irritable. And Im clearly not alone on this one. An Australian study published in JAMA evaluated overweight adults. They found that those who followed a strict low-carb diet for one year reported more crankiness compared to those who followed a higher-carb, low-fat diet, even though both groups lost similar amounts of weight.

Theres something to be said for taking control of your diet, rather than allowing your diet to control you. The simple (or not so simple) act of eliminating carbs gave me back a sense of control that my diet was sorely missing. Yes, there were cons to eliminating carbs from my diet, but for what its worth, it also gave me a sense of empowerment.

How to lose weight and burn fat with Calisthenics, according to John Abraham’s trainer – GQ India

Posted: August 1, 2017 at 3:43 am

So youve heard of Calisthenics, but have no idea what it is. And all those fitness videos on Instagram of celebrities going at it with fast-paced benchpresses and front and back lever pull ups have already convinced you that its not for you. Especially because the closest youve gotten to starting your fitness journey is taking the stairs back up at work after going for a smoke postlunch. And youre probably thinking yourebetter off sticking to that five pound dumbbells and praying to God you dont sprain yourself. But theres a lot more to calisthenics than being the preferred workout of celebrities. And chances are it could work better for you than it does for celebrities and folks who are already fit and even help you lose weight quicker than slogging with those ten pound dumbbells. If thats piqued your interest and got you thinking about giving Calisthenics a second thought, we got celebrity trainer Vinod Channa, the man behind the startling fitness journeys of the like of John Abraham and Anant Ambani, to decode what exactly it is and why you should give it a second look.

Unlike weight training, which focusses more on strength and stamina, Calisthenics primary focus is improving mobility and endurance, says Vinod Channa. It does this by using your body weight and combining it with workouts with fast paced reps that aid joint mobility and muscle use.Hecontinues, What Calisthenics is all about is getting the kind of movement that we were so used to as kids, back in our adult lives. Weve all played physical sports during childhood. And we were all so used to jump from considerable heights or climb up a tree. But now, we find the mere thought daunting because weve lost that kind of mobility. Calisthenics aims to bring that back.

Contrary to popular belief, Calisthenics isnt just the kind of high-level fast-paced heavy workout thatwe see celebrities doing. In fact, the more sedentary your lifestyle is, the more benefit you get from calisthenics, he reveals andexplains, What you see in the videos is the kind of high-level Calisthenics that you perform when youre already a year or more into the training. There are a number of lower level routines, such as rubber-band pulls, that people can start with.

Compared to weight training, the primary advantage of Calisthenics is the speed at which one can progress, according to Channa. He explains, In weight training, it might take one years to get from lifting fivepounds to 30 pounds. This is primarily because when we do weight training, we get easily scared of all those big weights. In Calisthenics, since we use the body, we start with our entire body weight, or parts of it. And within months, we can easily get to the stage where we use all of it. The progress is extremely quick and while losing weight is a subjective affair, anyone will see results in Calisthenics quicker than with weight training. You start with around 25 per cent of your body weight but within months you can get to using nearly all of it.

2. Electric starting is standard. Well get to the performance improvements in a moment, but weve all been waiting for an electric start CRF250R, and now we have it. A lithium-ion battery in the airbox helps manage the additional weight.

3. The 2018 Honda CRF250R follows the Absolute Holeshot ethos of the CRF450R. As were all aware, holeshots are a first-class ticket toward winning. So, Honda has reconfigured the CRF250Rs motor and chassis to give it that needed jump off the gate. Focus was put on more power, more rear grip, and less front-end lift.

4. The long-running Unicam design is replaced by a DOHC valve train. The 2018 CRF250R is about revs, as youll see, so Honda went to a DOHC design for the first time in CRF250R history.

5. Sucking in more of the fuel/air mixture gets the power pumping. As a result, Honda claims the new CRF250R is smoother off the bottom, with more midrange and top end power. All four valves are titanium with a more compact valve angle. This also allows more room for the new downdraft intake, plus a new airbox and intake system Honda says increases air-charging efficiency.

6. A bigger bore and shorter stroke means a higher rev limit. Honda shortened the stroke by a significant 2.9mm and there is a new bridged box piston that is now 79mm wide (a bump of 2.2mm). Also, the compression ratio gets a small nudge.

7. To aid the higher revving, the CRF250R gets a new crankshaft with an H-shaped cross-section. Weight is reduced by more than 12 ounces, yet Honda says is has the same rigidity and internal mass.

8. The torque and horsepower peaks come later, so youll want to rev the new CRF250R. Honda isnt shy about itpower is down a bit in the lower half of the rev range, and then comes alive for the upper mid-range and top end. Timid racers should like the softer bottom, while those who like to slam the rev limiter will love the new shrieking top end.

9. The 2018 Honda CRF250R gets a fully independent dual exhaust system. With all that air pushing through the motor, the new exhaust system features two separate headpipes and mufflersthere is no crossover. Honda claims more power and improved throttle response from this system.

10. Theres a new single-system for the oil. Running just 1250cc rather than 1600cc saves about 11 ounces of weight. There is also a shorter oil path to the engine, plus a new piston oil jet that sprays the bottom of the piston. The system reduces pump loss by maintaining negative pressure in the crankcase.

11. More power means a new clutch for the CRF250R. There are now two friction materials, instead of one, which should provide a better feel. The shape of the clutch has been changed, as well.

12. The transmission gets a stronger and lighter material, plus revised gear ratios. With a new powerband, new ratios are a must. The primary ratio is lower, with the five-speeds getting raised slightly.

13. There are three engine modes on the 2018 Honda CRF250R, and two can be remapped. Standard is fixed, and you can adjust Smooth and Aggressive to your liking.

14. The new chassis has a shorter swingarm and wheelbase, along with a slightly relaxed rake. The 15mm-shorter swingarm puts more weight on the rear wheel, which is part of the Absolute Holeshot effort, while the shorter wheelbase should make the 2018 Honda CRF250R more agile. To keep the front end down, rake is kicked out a tenth of a degree.

15. The new frame focuses on front-end stability. The frame sits a bit lower and farther forward, and cuts the weight by 12 ounces (theres that number again!). Tapered aluminum main spars in the frame are designed to improve the feel of the front end.

16. Like the CRF450R, the 2018 Honda CRF250R now has a titanium fuel tank. It also sits lower and drops 18 ounces from the weight of the bike. This is a critical place to lose weight, as it sits so high on the motorcycle.

17. The Showa SPG fork is a coil-spring design and the shock sits lower on the shorter, lighter swingarm. The swingarm goes on a 7.7-ounce diet (being shorter helps reduce unsprung weight), and the bottom shock mount is lowered and now centralized. The spring Showa fork has a 39mm piston and 25mm rod.

18. Dunlop Geomax MX3S is the rubber of choice. These are high-end tires, so unless you ride on extreme hard pack or sand, you wont have to switch out tires for your first ride.

19. The 2018 Honda CRF250R bodywork has been redone. It is now slimmer for reduced air resistance, and the graphics are molded into the plastic. Also, more air is directed to the radiator for the higher-revving motor.

20. The price is a secret. Well let you know when we know.
