Weight Loss Plateau and How to Break it Off (Infographic) – South Florida Reporter

Posted: June 3, 2017 at 5:41 pm

You started your weight loss diet with full success. Losing weight came naturally, and you saw it drop off each week. Sure you had the initial big drop, but then you saw a steady 1-2lb weight loss weekly that everyone says is healthy.

And then one week it didnt happen. You didnt change anything, but you didnt lose any weight. As a one of you werent too worried, but then it happened the next week and then the week after. This week youve still not lost any weight.

While you want to focus on the benefit of not gaining, you still want to know why youve not lost weight. Does this mean that you will stay at this weight forever?

This is known as a weight loss plateau. The great news is that you can make a few changes and see your weight loss happen again. It takes some work and commitment, but it can definitely be done.

What exactly is a weight loss plateau? What exactly does it mean for you and what do you need to do next? Well look at that in detail with this ultimate guide.

Weight Loss Plateaus: Youre Not Alone!

Let me start by saying that youre not alone. Almost every dieter will suffer a weight loss plateau at some point. They have weeks and weeks of losing absolutely nothing at all. Usually, they will literally just stay the same weight from week to week. Others can gain a pound and then lose it the next week, but the week after that they gain that same pound again. Theyre not changing anything, but their body is fluctuating between this same pound.

An actual weight loss plateau is described as someone who stays the same weight for three weeks or more in a row. Nothing changes. Its like the scales just dont know how to move either up or down.

Local woman thanks TOPS for 71 pound weight loss – KSNT News

Posted: June 3, 2017 at 5:41 pm

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT)- In a world of more weight loss programs than we can count, Laura Davis from Lyndon, Kansas, thanks her 71 pound weight loss to a unique program found in locally.

Two years ago this May, I started at TOPS and weighed in a 216. I felt the effects of being big. I would have knee pain several times during the week and this past may I weighed in at 145, said Laura Davis.

TOPS stands for, Take Off Pounds Sensibly, and has been around since 1948.

We first weigh in at the private weigh-ins. And then after the weigh-ins we go into our meetings. We talk about health, we talk about accountability, and we talk about support for each other, said Jerry Hardwick, a Northeast Kansas TOPS Chapter Leader.

But what really makes this program so enticing to users like Laura, is the no frills atmosphere.

Some of the other groups are just focused on their program, their meetings, their products and you dont get that. TOPS is more like a family, said Davis.

As a family, the group not only encourages good nutrition and exercise, but also a realistic routine. Two years later, Laura can now tell when shes off her weekly schedule.

I could tell if I hadnt had my water all day, I could tell if I hadnt worked out in two days, I could feel it.

Now, when Laura looks in the mirror, 71 pounds lighter, she says its kind of hard to believe thats her.

Oh yea! Thats me!

TOPS has an annual fee of $32 per year with meetings once a week.

When people lose a substantial amount of weight, they can often be left with rolls of excess skin. Its hard to get rid of and its harder still to mentally get your head around a new body which has to deal with as the initial weight-loss process. Photographer Samantha Geballe, from California, started taking self-portraits in 2013 after she had a gastric bypass. And three years on, shes still photographing her progress.

Researchers examine time-restricted eating – Yahoo7 News

Posted: June 2, 2017 at 5:45 am

Sarah Wiedersehn - AAP on June 2, 2017, 4:28 pm

Researchers examine time-restricted eating

Instead of fasting every second day, what if people enjoyed their food just over a shorter period of time and still loose weight?

Australian researchers are leading a study exploring how the timing of when people eat can influence the body's natural body clock and impact their health.

In today's modern society, where people eat food and work around the clock, the concept of 'time-restricted' eating has been gaining traction among scientists.

A recent UK study published in journal Current Biology found eating your meals a bit later can help reset your body clock due to changes in metabolic tissues that control blood sugar levels.

Dr Evelyn Parr from the Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research at Australian Catholic University says it's believed disruptions to the body clock through a lack of sleep, physical activity and diet can be detrimental to overall health and contribute to obesity and diabetes.

The expert in exercise science is studying hundreds of overweight and obese men to measure the impact time-restricted eating has on their metabolic health.

Instead of eating breakfast at 7am, they will eat it at 10am and then cease all eating at 6pm.

This equates to a time window of eight hours as opposed to the average 12-15 hours a person could be consuming food.

"If you think of someone who gets up for work and is eating at around 6.30am and then maybe snacking late into the night before going to bed, there may not even be a very long period, longer than six hours, people aren't consuming food for," Dr Parr said.

The researcher will analyse metabolites, or molecules, in muscle samples taken from the participants every four hours for 24 hours to see the impact of the diet.

"We think that from animal research that the longer time of fasting will turn on what they call some fasting genes that may then improve metabolic health," Dr Parr said.

It's thought this diet approach may be easier and more enjoyable for some rather than restricting them to only 500 calories a day, every other day.

Intermittent fasting diets, such as the 5:2 diet, have been shown to work and are increasing in popularity.

In fact, the CSIRO has launched a new 'Flexi' fasting diet.

A 16-week trial of the weight loss program resulted in an average weight loss of 11 kilograms, improvements in cholesterol, insulin, glucose levels and blood pressure.

In addition to weight loss, psychological improvements were also observed, said CSIRO Research Dietitian Dr Jane Bowen.

However concerns have been raised by dietitians that intermittent fasting is hard to maintain long term and won't suit everyone.

The Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) says intermittent fasting is no "magic bullet" and in reality any diet that encourages eating fewer kilojoules than you burn through exercise and daily activities will result in weight loss.

But for lasting, long-term health benefits, the DAA recommends finding an eating pattern people will enjoy and can stick with

Teachers issue warning over ‘delay’ to vital exam reforms – Herald Scotland

Posted: June 2, 2017 at 5:45 am

VITAL reforms to second class school qualifications to make them more appealing to pupils risk being delayed, a teaching union has warned.

The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) has written to ministers highlighting concern over a slip in discussions for change to National 4 qualifications.

Since they were introduced in 2013 there has been concern over a lower than expected uptake, with some parents and teachers not valuing National 4 because it has no final exam.

Instead, pupils have been entered for the more advanced National 5 qualifications which not all candidates are suited to.

As a result, an expert group chaired by Education Secretary John Swinney has agreed to reform the qualification, with one strong possibility the introduction of an external assessment.

The government said no agreement had been made on a timetable for change, but the EIS said the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) was now putting off discussions until after the summer.

Larry Flanagan, the unions general secretary, said: We have expressed our concern to the SQA at the suggestion that work on improving the National 4 award may be delayed. This is extremely disappointing news and will be source of great concern amongst teachers.

Getting National 4 right is key to the success of the other changes being made to qualifications and changes are required urgently.

The EIS has raised this matter with Mr Swinney as chair of the review group because it is extremely important we now get on with delivering the improvements that all parties agree are needed.

However, a Scottish Government spokeswoman stressed the importance of the SQA being given sufficient time to deliver the annual diet of exams as well as ongoing reforms to other qualifications including National 5 and Highers.

She said: There is no delay to introducing changes to National 4. Whilst there is a consensus on the need to review National 4, there has been no agreement either on the specifics of any changes or on the timetable for introducing them.

National 4 is a key part of our National qualifications and the review must be carefully thought through, taking account the views of a range of education bodies.

In agreeing a timetable for undertaking this work we need to recognise the balance of our commitments to introduce changes to National 5 and Higher with the SQAs capacity to deliver the annual exam diet safely.

Bulldog Hiway Express driver shows less is more – American Trucker

Posted: June 2, 2017 at 5:45 am

When James Houston married his wife, Shirley, in June 2007, he weighed in at 425 pounds.Last November, James weighed in at 205.8 pounds.

When James Houston saw his mother-in-law during a visit to her hospital room, her jaw hit the floor. James was nearly 100 pounds lighter than when she saw him last.

For me that kind of reaction is the real motivation when Im losing weight, the Bulldog Hiway Express, a Daseke company, driver says of the visit he paid to his mother-in-law, now deceased, when he was well along the way to eventually losing 225 pounds. When I see that reaction from people and hear them say, man, youre doin awesome, that just means so much to me.

Unfortunately, all that weight James lost several years earlier didnt stay off. Subsequent medical issues robbed him of energy and caused him to regain nearly 100 pounds. Still, James was determined to shed that weight again. With the help and encouragement of friends and family, plus co-workers and management at Bulldog Hiway Express, and under the care of his physician, James eventually lost 88 pounds.

For that second weight loss, James received the grand prize award in one of two divisions of the St. Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund (SCF) Driven to Be Healthy Challenge. During the six-month challenge, which kicked off at the 2016 Great American Trucking Show in Dallas in late August, James achieved the highest percentage of weight loss, losing more than 7 percent of his body weight.

During the 2017 Mid-America Trucking Show in March, James was honored with one of the challenges two top awards. And like the look he received from his mother-in-law years earlier, the award meant the world to the 17-year truck driver, who has been with Bulldog since 2010.

Its all about that people-to-people connection, James says. Getting praise from your family, friends and co-workers that makes it all worth it, and then some.

James says the personal call he received from Don Daseke, founder, president and CEO of Daseke, congratulating him also meant a great deal.

Getting that call was a big surprise, he adds. That was really nice for him to take the time to do that. It made me feel really special.

Daseke says James offers his fellow drivers a great deal of inspiration. His proactive, no-excuses approach of prioritizing his health, consulting with his physician and taking control of his dietary choices offers all of us a great example to follow, Don adds.

James says he knows just how important inspiration is when losing weight, which is why he works hard at inspiring others. Over the past decade, James has been a regular call-in guest to several satellite and broadcast radio programsto encourage healthier eating habits. He also appeared on the shows while they were broadcasting live from the floor of the MATS show.

His emphasis on inspiration is also why he recently created a website, DogmanDiet.com, to help others considering weight loss. Over the years, Ive had a lot of people come to me asking, howd you do it? So, I created this website where I can share with them all of the things Ive learned.

James says hes learned from experience that the biggest mistake people make when dieting is not eating enough of the right foods at the right times to maintain a healthy metabolism. Regular exercise is also very important, he says. And being one who practices what he preaches, James chose a paid trip to Fort Mountain State Park near the Cohutta Wilderness in northern Georgia as his challenge award prize. By choosing the Fort Mountain State Park visit, James can bring his entire family.

Being able to go out and do some hiking is something I definitely couldnt have done as recently as two years ago, James admits. He credits the health care hes received for raising his testosterone level, controlling his diabetes, and treating his thyroid issue and sleep apnea. That treatment has also contributed to his weight loss, he adds. Ive got to say the 401(k) retirement and the better health insurance we got when Bulldog joined Daseke sure has been pretty nice. I certainly appreciate the support Ive been given from the folks at Bulldog and Daseke.

At the heart of James Houstons Dogman Diet lies carefully thought-out meals, well-timed eating habits and regular exercise. For his mandatory rest periods, he tries to choose well-lit rest areas as places to stop where he can walk and exercise safely.

James eats three meals a day, each timed about five hours apart. He chooses things like carrots, French-style green beans and whole-grain cereals. He also controls portions so that all three meals offer a combined total of no more than 1,800 to 2,000 calories.

One of the biggest obstacles drivers have to losing weight is having the time to get or make healthier meals, he says. When drivers are in a rush to get back on the road, they almost always go for those fast food choices you can get in five minutes or less. But if you stop and think about it, a large Big Mac meal can be over 1,300 calories!

Ive learned that with some planning, you can always come up some fast, cheap and healthier alternatives, he adds. Plus, many fast food restaurants now offer those healthier menu options.
