Researchers discover compound preventing muscle loss and weight gain in seniors – WWLTV.com

Posted: April 11, 2022 at 1:57 am

Muscle loss takes away independence and causes health problems as we age, evident especially now as we are living longer.

NEW ORLEANS Researchers in Louisiana have made a discovery that could one day treat two problems common to aging, losing muscle while gaining fat.

The ground-breaking research is just out today in a medical journal, and the lead scientist explains how it works.

As we age, we lose muscle mass. And that natural decline begins early on, around the late 30s.

So it's very much a use it or lose it muscle, soone of the natural instincts we fightmore often or not,is just the desire to do less, saidChris Axelrod, Director of Integrative Physiology and MolecularMedicine at LSU Pennington Biomedical Research Center.

Muscle loss takes away independence and causes health problems as we age, evident especially now as we are living longer.

That muscle mass is going to be one of the largest predictors of the quality of your life, and maybe the length of your life, he said.

And obesity in older age accelerates muscle loss. You can slow the natural process of losing muscle with exercise, and quality protein in your diet, but now researchers at LSU Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, have discovered chemical a compound that helped elderly obese mice, lose weight, add muscle and strength, reduce inflammation, and increase physical activity.

Instead of affecting how much food you're eating, you're affecting how much food you're breaking down to use to make energy. It dramatically, and I mean dramatically decreases body weight, Axelrod explained.

That excess fuel, or calories, normally would be stored as fat.

The study is published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle. It's the first evidence that the compound BAM15, works inside the cell's energy production center to prevent muscle loss and fat increase as we age. This is different from dieting, by reducing calories, which causes weight loss of fat and muscle.

We know that it treats obesity. We know that it can promote healthy aging. It can treat certain forms of cancer.

But years of research is needed still and is now ongoing, to see if it works in people, and to design the compound and dose that is safe.

Scientists warn that at this stage, the synthetic compound being sold on the internet is for research purposes only.

Matthewappeared to have lost some weight and gained a companion in the new images.

The Friends alum wore a flannel shirt under a light blue tee as his greying hair was held in place by a pair of sunglasses - he also sported a goatee.

Matthew held a McDonalds cup after appearing to grab lunch with his new friend - whose identity is currently unknown - in Pacific Palisades, California.

They parked a vehicle and entered the home, with his counterpart wearing jeans shorts with sunglasses while holding a bunch of McDonald's items as they entered the wooden gate.

Matthew has rarely appeared in public lately, but appeared distressed and disheveled as he was seen last October smoking a cigarette after splitting from his fiance Molly.

However, more recently he teased his upcoming book release on Instagram, sharinga photoof the cover along with the release date: "11. 1. 22."

The book is titled "Friends, Lovers And The Big Terrible Thing" and he looked happy and healthy on the cover.

He reportedly scored millions for the memoir, which sold in a deal in the mid-seven figure range, according to an earlier story fromDeadline.

According to the outlet, the actor will take readers behind-the-scenes and onto the soundstage of the sitcom while opening up about his private struggles with addiction.

In the caption of his post, he also promised to tell-all in the memoir, writing: "So much has been written about me in the past. I thought it was time people heard from me."

Referencing his drug addiction struggles, the actor wrote: "The highs were high, the lows were low. But I have lived to tell the tale, even though at times it looked like I wouldnt. And its all in here."

He then joked, "I apologize its not a pop-up book."

Fans flooded the comments with positivity, gushing about the cover and how "excited" they were.

The actor famously starred as Chandler Bing on the long-running sitcom, alongside Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox, from 1994 to 2004 - as well as other projects like the film Fools Rush In.

However, fans noticed that the Canadian actor was not responding to questions with his normal sharp wit andappeared quiet and distracted.

Despite the speculation, The Sun exclusively revealed that Matthew'sslurred speech was due to emergency dental workand not a drugs relapse.

Matthew's battled addiction over the years but recently was said to be "sober and doing better."

Theactorsplit from his fiance Molly a month later in June 2021.

He began dating the literary manager, 29, in 2018 and they had gottenengagedin November 2020.

Matthewconfirmed the breakup news toPeople, sharing in a statement: "Sometimes things just don't work out and this is one of them. I wish Molly the best."

However, it was later reported thatMolly put their wedding on holdafter he "flirted with other women" while they were on a break.

A source told OK!: "It's got to be upsetting for her to know he was pursuing other girls the moment they split up.

"Mattdoesn't see how he should be punished he didn't cheat.

Posted: April 11, 2022 at 1:57 am

Those who are intolerant to dairy products and can not have paneer should definitely be looking for other vegetarian protein alternatives.

Tofu is an excellent alternative to paneer. It is a rich source of isoflavones which are known to reduce the risk of several diseases like osteoporosis, cancer and heart disease.

Lentils are also a great source of protein. One cup of lentil contains 18 grams of protein. Rich in fibers, lentils are also good for your gut health.

Beans contain 15 grams of protein along with carbs, fiber, iron, folate, phosphorus, potassium. It manages cholesterol levels, blood sugar and also reduces belly fat.

Other good sources of protein are almonds, peanuts, chickpeas, soy milk, quinoa and chia seeds.

12 Best Meal Replacement Bars For Weight Loss Of 2022 – Women’s Health

Posted: April 11, 2022 at 1:57 am

Sometimes chaotic schedules can leave you with no time to actually sit down and eat. A meal replacement bar can really come in handy at these times, but youll want to pick one really carefully, especially if youre trying to lose weightsome may have more calories than you want. The best meal replacement bars should have balanced nutrients and minimal added sugars.

A meal replacement bar is a protein bar with a little more nutrition meant to be able to take the place of a meal, says Audra Wilson, RD, a bariatric dietitian at the Northwestern Medicine Metabolic Health and Surgical Weight Loss Center at Delnor Hospital. And one typically comes with 200 to 400 calories.

Given the name, you may think you can just grab one and call it a meal. But TBH, theyre not meant to be consumed as a meal on its own. The vast majority of bars on the market do not contain enough calories to replace an entire meal, so they will need to be paired with other foodsfor instance, yogurt and a piece of fruit, says Amy Gorin, RDN, an inclusive plant-based dietitian and the owner of Master the Media in Stamford, Connecticut.

Having the occasional bar on the go can stop you from turning down the drive-through lane for heavy or unhealthy choices when you're hungry, says Gorin, emphasizing that you definitely cannot subsist on these bars alone. If you plan on replacing a meal with one, make sure to also consume other foods along with it to amp up the calorie count.

May Zhu, RD, the founder of Nutrition Happens, agrees and points out that eating real food is still the best way to get all your nutrients. While meal replacement bars offer an equivalent number of calories, they do not provide the vitamins and minerals youd get from veggies, meat, and grains. But if bars are easier for you to sustain a calorie intake that aligns with your weight loss goals, swapping it out for one meal a day could potentially help achieve that goal as long as your other meals are also in line with those goals, she says.

You should use these bars sparingly, thougha few times a week at most. Relying too much on meal replacement bars might mean that you are missing out on several essential vitamins and minerals that are found in fruits and vegetables, says Zhu. Her advice is to check the label and see which macros are missing, then supplement with an item that can fill that gap. For example, if your bar is lower in fiber, try pairing it with an extra piece of fiber-rich fruit. Zhu adds that it's fine to sub a meal with a bar once in a while if you are eating a balanced diet at other times.

Some meal replacement bars have a lot of fat and sugar, so save them for when you absolutely need one. Wilson says she recommend these bars only when you're debating between skipping a meal and eating something.

Many bars will be within a similar calorie range, but analyzing the nutrition facts allows you to see where the calories are coming from, says Wilson. Protein should be between 10 to 15 grams for a filling effect. Saturated fat should not exceed 20 percent in the percent daily value column, and fat should stay around 10 grams or less. If the bar has whole ingredients, it should contain at least three grams of fiber. The bar may be high in carbs or sugar, but this should come from whole fruits like dates, not added sugars like honey or sucrose. So look for hidden sugar by checking for phrases like "dried cane juice," "honey," or "raw sugar," as all of these are considered sugar.

Finally, search for whole foods in the ingredient list. The more the better, Wilson says. Some bars will have added nutrients, so if you see ingredients like citric acid, know that these may be a nutritional add-on.

Even knowing what the ideal criteria are, picking a meal replacement bar can still be tricky, especially if you have certain dietary restrictions or preferences. Here are the best meal replacement bars for every need, according to RDs.

Best For Nutrition

SANS meal bars are the next best thing to a plate of nutritious foods when you're too busy for one. They are made from 100 percent whole foods like egg whites, flax seeds, peanuts, and spinach, providing at least 10 percent of the daily value of 15 essential vitamins and minerals, according to Zhu.

Even though you'll find sugar in the bars, know that it's derived from natural sources like dates. Overall, these bars have a well-rounded profile of protein, fiber, and healthy fats, and will make for a delicious, satisfying alternative.

Per serving: 380 calories, 24 g fat, 36 g carbs, 22 g sugar, 9 g fiber, 14 g protein

Best Gluten-Free Bars

These are Gorin's go-to when she's on the go. The LemonZest is my current favorite flavor, with eight grams of satisfying plant protein and three grams of filling fiber for 190 calories. Plus, it is made with gluten-free ingredients, she says. Throw one in your purse, so you won't be caught unprepared without an appropriate substitute if you're sensitive to gluten.

Per serving: 190 calories, 6 g fat, 28 g carbs, 9 g sugar, 3 g fiber, 8 g protein

Best Grain-Free Bars

Made from a base of peanut butter, eggs, and rice protein, Perfect Bars are packed with almost 20 grams of protein per bar. There is also a blend of whole vegetable powders in the mix, including carrot, celery, dried kale, and spinach.

These bars provide 50 percent daily value of vitamin B3, which helps the body convert food to energy, explains Zhu.

Per serving: 340 calories, 19 g fat, 27 g carbs, 19 g sugar, 3 g fiber, 17 g protein

Best For Energy

GoMacro MacroBars contain a blend of sprouted brown rice and pea protein that in combination, helps you get a more well-rounded source of complete protein, says Zhu. The puffed brown rice in these bars is a fiber-rich carbohydrate that'll keep you full and power you through the day.

Per serving: 270 calories, 9 g fat, 35 g carbs, 13 g sugar, 3 g fiber, 12 g protein

Best For Keto Dieters

Sugar and carbs are a big no-no when you're trying to achieve ketosis through the keto diet, which makes finding a meal replacement bar that fits into your carb limit more difficult. Look no further than this EPIC chicken bar, which has just three grams of carbs. True to its name, it is all chicken and gives you 11 grams of protein and two grams of fiber per 90 calories, says Gorin.

Per serving: 90 calories, 4.5 g fat, 3 g carbs, 0 g sugar, 2 g fiber, 11 g protein

Best Nut-Free Bars

Simple and natural, these Rise protein bars are crafted with only five whole food ingredients "that you can pronounce." They pack 15 grams of pea protein per bar, which is both vegan- and paleo-friendly. While these bars are a great option for anyone looking for a healthy meal replacement bar, people with nut allergies will especially appreciate them because they're completely nut-free.

Per serving: 280 calories, 15 g fat, 21 g carbs, 12 g sugar, 2 g fiber, 15 g protein

Best Organic Bars

At 400 calories, Pro Bars are a great size, and also contain fiber, fats, and protein for a good balance of macronutrients, says Zhu. Plus. it is made with natural ingredients like organic dates, nuts, oats, and seeds.

Per serving: 400 calories, 22 g fat, 43 g carbs, 19 g sugar, 6 g fiber, 11 g protein

Best Plant-Based Bars

The protein from these bars are all from plant-based ingredients, such as brown rice and pumpkin seed, per Zhu. For example, the coconut chocolate almond-flavored ones provides 14 grams of USDA organic protein, six grams of fiber, and only three grams of added sugars. These bars can cater to the needs of a lot of different people since they are gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, and stevia-free.

Per serving: 260 calories, 13 g fat, 22 g carbs, 4 g sugar, 6 g fiber, 14 g protein

Best High-Protein Bars

Made with pea and rice protein, stevia, and monk fruit, No Cow bars come with more than 20 grams of plant protein and a whopping 14 grams of fiber in one serving. They are also gluten- and soy-free.

Calorie-wise, it is on the lower end, so Zhu recommends that you have it with another snack-sized option to make it a more substantial meal. Think: fresh fruit, hummus, nuts, or vegetables.

Per serving: 190 calories, 4.5 g fat, 27 g carbs, 1 g sugar, 14 g fiber, 22 g protein

Best For Vegans

Consisting of only five ingredients, Go Raw bars are vegan-friendly because it is made with a minimally processed base of dates and sprouted seeds. They pack 12 grams of plant-based protein from seeds and five grams of fiber per bar, making them a very satiating meal substitute.

Per serving: 270 calories, 18 g fat, 16 g carbs, 10 g sugar, 5 g fiber, 12 g protein

Best For Weight Loss

These bars provides 10 grams of protein, which is an excellent amount, for 230 calories, says Gorin. You also get five grams of fiber, and this protein and fiber together help keep you satiated for longer, she adds.

Sweetened with honey, these gluten-free bars also contain super grains like oats, quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth, and millet.

Per serving: 230 calories, 7 g fat, 34 g carbs, 13 g sugar, 5 g fiber, 10 g protein

Best For Whole30 Followers

There are few energy bars in this category that pass the Whole30 criteria since the whole premise is about eating primarily foods in their whole form, says Zhu. But any of the RX Bars (which are made with real foods, BTW) without peanuts would work if youre following this diet.

You'll find protein from egg whites, fiber from dates, and satiety from nuts like cashews and almonds in these gluten-free bars. Given their low calorie count, Zhu suggests that you eat these bars with a piece of fruit or something else with fiber on the side for a more balanced meal.

Per serving: 210 calories, 8 g fat, 24 g carbs, 18 g sugar, 3 g fiber, 12 g protein

The 4 Best Vegetables to Shrink Belly Fat, Say Dietitians Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: April 11, 2022 at 1:56 am

You can't go wrong with veggies. They're nutrient-dense and versatile, so you'll never run out of healthy ways to prepare them. And if you're trying to achieve a weight loss goal or lose belly fat, there are specific vegetables that can help you out!

To learn more about these specific veggies and the nutrients they contain that can help with your goal of losing abdominal fat, we spoke with Courtney D'Angelo, MS, RD, author at Go Wellness, as well as Trista Best, MPH, RD, LD from Balance One Supplements. Here are the veggies they recommend, and for more healthy eating tips, check out 3 Best Foods to Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease.

Pass the spinach, please! This leafy green is full of nutrients and great as a salad, sauted, or thrown into your protein smoothie. According to both dietitians, adding more spinach to your diet can help you lose belly fat.

"Leafy green vegetables are not only super nutritious, but they also help you shrink belly fat," says D'Angelo. "Spinach is high in fiber, which absorbs nutrients more and helps with digestion. It's also high in vitamin K, which can sometimes support the reduction of body weight, including visceral fat."

Red bell peppers are a versatile veggie with a natural sweetness that goes great in a stir fry or on top of your burrito bowl. They're also full of nutrients that can help you with your weight goals.

"Bell peppers are ideal vegetables to add to a weight loss diet," says Best. "They are low in calories and high in nutrients, while also helping to create a sense of fullness after meals. This combination can help to prevent overeating throughout the rest of the day. Their fiber content and capsaicin also give red bell peppers their weight loss benefits."

Broccoli is one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables you can find, which is why both of our dietitians swear by this green veggie as a food for helping to manage your weight.

"This cruciferous vegetable is rich in antioxidants that help drive down inflammation in the body," says Best. "The primary compound is sulforaphane, which works by lowering cytokines and NF-kB in the body. These substances drive the inflammatory process. By reducing inflammation, the body is better able to release weight and work efficiently in every other area as well."

"Broccoli also contains several other nutrients that may promote belly fat loss, including vitamin C, calcium, and chromium," says D'Angelo. "Vitamin C is needed by the body for metabolizing fats into energy. This veggie is also a high-carb food, which has many benefits when it comes to weight loss such as helping you feel full, providing energy, preventing weight gain, aiding in digestion, and even helping to trim your waistline."

Lastly, carrots are a delicious root vegetable that contains more nutrients than many people realize. Not only that, but chewing raw carrots also may surprisingly help with your goals as well!

"This vegetable is unique in its ability to help reduce belly fat in the fact that it raises the body's metabolism," says Best. "The thermogenic effect of food (TEF) is the rate of calories a food causes the body to burn while being digested. Because carrots have a hard texture, they have a high TEF and therefore cause the body to burn more calories simply by eating them."

Posted: April 11, 2022 at 1:56 am

Richa Chadha recently shared pictures from a photoshoot, in which she looked dreamy in a stunning black number from Delhi-based designer Amritraj Bora.

The actor took to Instagram to share a series of pictures, in which she was dressed in a risqu black evening gown with subtle bling, a plunging neckline, long train and a thigh-high slit.

She wrote in the accompanying caption, I love doing photo shoots where the photographer and I have a friendship, (like in this case), worldview in common, love for music, art

The 35-year-old wore her hair in a messy updo and opted for natural makeup complete with smokey eyes and highlighted features to keep with the aesthetics of the pictures.

She added that while shooting for this one particularly, I felt like I was playing a character. Distinct from the films I do but interesting still

The Fukrey actor, however, added in the postscript what healthy weight loss means, rather what it does not mean. Healthy weight loss means you dont lose muscle, like in my case the gluteus maximus is intact, she joked.

The gluteus maximus refers to the largest of the set of three muscles in the buttocks that helps with the movement of the thigh. Chadha quipped that even when one loses weight, the healthy way to do it is to have the muscle mass intact.

We love that the actor has a funny bone, or rather a muscle in her body!
