Yasmani Grandal on new diet, ready to contribute hitting right-handed – LA Daily News

Posted: February 24, 2017 at 2:47 pm

GLENDALE, Ariz. >> Yasmani Grandal knew his new diet had really taken hold when his 7-year-old daughter was visiting her grandmother.

As soon as you mention vegetables to a little kid, they say, No, Grandal said. So we just started making food and we never really mentioned that it was all vegetables. We didnt make a big deal.

Two, three weeks ago she was at her grandmas house and her grandma bought her some candy. She goes back and reads the label and it said 57 grams of sugar or something like that. She goes up to her grandma, Hey, grandma this has too much sugar. I can only have one or two. It was pretty funny.

Grandal didnt exactly take the idea of a plant-based, meatless diet seriously right away himself. His wife, Heather, works as a nurse. She wanted to watch a documentary that a cardiologist she works with had mentioned.

She put it on and I wasnt too interested in it, Grandal said. Then as I started to hear things here and there and some athletes were giving their testimony about how their performance had improved and it kind of caught my attention a little. So I went back and watched the whole documentary by myself and kind of got into it.

The Dodgers catcher decided to give it a try for 15 days and 15 days turned into a month, turned into two months and here we are now.

But the real focus of Grandals off-season was putting the meat back in his right-handed swing.

The switch-hitting catcher did not want to platoon against left-handed pitching as he had the past two seasons with veteran backups A.J. Ellis and Carlos Ruiz and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts didnt want to have to sit his front-line catcher based on the opposing pitcher.

In a perfect world, I think its more contingent on the schedule and not left-vs-right, Roberts said this spring. I think in the past couple years its been that because his right-handed swing hasnt been where we would have liked, where he would have liked.

The Dodgers made the obvious known to Grandal that a better right-handed swing would mean more playing time in 2017 and persuaded him to work with former big-league hitting coach Jeff Pentland this winter.

Coming up through the minor leagues, my splits were the same. I actually hit for more power from the right side, Grandal said. But it was the fact that I was playing every day. Whether it was a righty or lefty didnt matter, I was in. It was the daily repetitions I was getting so my swing was there.

It was more than that, though. Grandal injured his right knee in July 2013 and then his left shoulder in August 2015. Both had a greater effect on his right-handed swing. He wasnt able to sit back (on his right leg) and turn on it from the right side as much as he used in 126 right-handed at-bats the first two seasons after the injury he had just one home run.

And the shoulder injury appeared to affect Grandals swing plane. While his exit velocity from the left side (92.8 mph) and right side (91.1) last season were nearly equal, the launch angles were drastically different 14 degrees as a left-handed hitter, 7.7 as a right-hander. The result was a 53.6 percent ground ball rate as a right-handed hitter.

It looks good. Its not as steep. Its not as in-and-out of the zone, Roberts said of the adjustments Grandal has made in his right-handed swing this spring. The balls he did square up (last year), the trajectory just wasnt right. It was more negative, down into the ground.

So weve talked about elevating the ball to the pull side. That with the contact rate, it should be a productive right-handed player. He worked real hard. Hes healthy No. 1. But he also feels good about the right-handed swing.

Indeed, Grandal doesnt lack confidence from either side of the plate.

Ive always been very confident from both sides. I know I can do it, he said. Its just a matter of gaining confidence from the coaching staff for them to say, OK, we dont have to think about whos catching today. We know Yaz is going to be there.

Clayton Kershaw will start the Dodgers first Cactus League game on Saturday against the Chicago White Sox followed by Rich Hill on Sunday and Kenta Maeda on Monday. The starting pitchers will likely only throw one inning the first time around. The rest of the starting lineup will get two plate appearances each in the opener Saturday. ... Last years assistant hitting coach on the major-league staff, Tim Hyers, will serve as a roving instructor in the minor leagues this year. Triple-A hitting coach Shawn Wooten will occasionally work with the big league team this year.

This Guy’s Post-Breakup Weight Loss Transformation Is #FitnessGoals – Huffington Post

Posted: February 24, 2017 at 2:47 pm

Getting healthy and fit for your own well-being is is a huge deal regardless of who notices but having your weight loss journey go viral makes itextra sweet.Just ask Abrahiem Sarwar.

Earlier this week, the the full-time student from San Antonio, Texas watched as a before-and-after photo got more than 300K likes on the popular Instagram account WorldstarHipHop.

It didnt hurt that theres a great story behind the 21-year-olds weight loss transformation: Part of the reason his girlfriend left him two years ago was because of his weight.

At his heaviest, Sarwar was 380 pounds. Today, hes 205 pounds.

I got heavier throughout the four-and-a-half-year relationship, he told The Huffington Post. I just got comfortable with her and myself when we were together and really didnt notice myself getting bigger.

When his then-girlfriend made a remark about his weight and none of the clothes he tried on at the mall fit anymore Sarwar decided it was time to get back in shape.

I knew I had to get myself together, not for her but for myself, he said. It was really depressing to me where I was in my life.

Sarwar admits that heading to the gym regularly was rough going at first.

I would go to the gym here and there throughout high school but just stopped going altogether eventually, he said. I didnt have any motivation for a while. Then I found my motivation in trying to prove to myself and everyone else that I could change my whole life around.

YouTube fitness videos especially those posted by vlogger Christian Guzman helped Sarwar learn proper form and small hacks to maximize his gym visits. Cutting back on trips to fast food restaurants throughout the week made a huge difference, too.

I started to cook the recipes I saw bodybuilders eat on YouTube, he said. It was a lot better for me and way cheaper than what I was spending daily to eat out.

Today, Sarwar aspires to be a fitness vlogger and he absolutely loves hearing how his two-year weight loss journey inspires others to prioritize their health.

I know how it feels to have no hope, to have no guidance, just being down all the time about yourself, he said. But only you can change that. You have to know that no one else can put in the hard work but you.

‘I Swallowed a Balloon For Weight Loss and Lost 40 Lbs.’ – TIME

Posted: February 24, 2017 at 2:47 pm

Dana Goossens, 29, lives in Illinois and participated in a recent clinical trial for a weight loss device called the Obalon Balloon System. Here's her story:

Like many Americans, Ive tried all sorts of ways to lose weight . Thats been disheartening, especially since Ive always been an active person. I tried everything from diet pills to eating only 500 calories a day and getting hormone injections to Weight Watchersbut I was never successful at keeping off the weight over the long term. I was tired of yo-yo diets and medications that made me feel bad.

My mother, who is a registered nurse, would remind me not to be vain, but she knew how much my weight was bringing me down. She forwarded me an article about a new device called the Obalon Balloon System, which consists of inflatable balloons that expand in your stomach to help you lose weight. It sounded strange, but I was curious.

I sent emails to the doctors involved in the clinical trial and I was able to secure one of the last spots. I was nervous about explaining my decision to my friends and family. My boyfriend told me if it would make me happy to give it a try, then I should do it.

The procedure was surprisingly simple. During the first session, I swallowed a small capsule that was tied to a tiny micro-catheter. The doctor then inflated the balloon once it was in my stomachit gets to be about the size of an orangeand removed the catheter. The whole process took about 10 minutes. In the beginning, I could tell there was an object inside of me. At night it was a bit more uncomfortable as I could feel the balloon move a bit and squeak, but nothing I couldnt handle. Eventually, my body got used to the feeling and I didnt think about it during the day.

After one month, I went back to the doctor and swallowed the second balloon capsule, and two months after that, I swallowed the third and final balloon. Pretty soon after swallowing the second balloon, I started noticing the real weight loss. I was also seeing a nutritionist regularly, and I started doing cardio fitness about four times a week for 45 minutes. I learned how to listen to my body and understand when I'm hungry or full.

By the end of the six months, I lost close to 40 pounds and weighed 138 pounds. My friends and family were really impressed. What I liked about the balloon procedure was that I didnt have to undergo surgery, and I could keep the procedure discreet.

I also developed lifestyle changes that helped me lose the weight at a steady pace, and I am hopeful this weight loss is more sustainable. By the time the trial ended, I felt confident I could maintain my healthy lifestyle even after getting the balloons removed. And I've even lost more weight since then.

The balloons have now been approved by the FDA, costs $6,000 to $9,000, and isn't covered by insurance.

CKNW Health Series: Why are ‘fad diets’ so persistent? – iNews880.com

Posted: February 24, 2017 at 2:46 pm

Atkins, Gluten-Free, The South Beach, The Zone, Paleo.

Do these sound familiar?

Its just a short list of fad diets youve probably heard at least someone talking about.

But what is it that about these food fads that keeps them coming back?

Registered dietician Lori Smart with Health BC says the reason why fad diets keep popping up is because people are always looking for a new way to better themselves.

A lot of the popularity around fad diets come from ones own personal beliefs that this is a diet that would be healthy for them, or this is a diet that would help them lose weight, she says.

Smart adds they seem to crop up more often this time of year, when people coming out of the winter are looking to make lifestyle changes or lose weight and are looking for a way to do it.

She says a big contributor is the internet.

With so much information on the web it can be very, very hard to figure out whats true, whats not true or whats beneficial, whats potentially harmful.

Smart says its important to remember that some of these diets are meant for people with clinical conditions, for example people with celiac disease must eat a gluten-free diet, or people suffering from cardiovascular disease might take special care about what they eat.

It may be turned into a fad diet because others believe its beneficial, but they could really have a benefit for that person with the food condition.

She says if youre interested in trying a new diet you read about online, or have heard from a friend has tried it, its still best to speak to a healthcare provider, physician, dietician, or by calling 8-1-1 the nurses line. She recommends asking questions such as:

And she says its important to have an honest conversation about it.

Certain diets are okay as long as youre aware of the things, or the nutrients that you might be missing out on if you follow that diet. Now some are just not healthy in general, but thats why its always good to talk to a health care provider, especially a dietitian who has been trained in this area to help you navigate that information and then to point you to some resources that if you choose to continue follow that diet, you can do so safely.

Smart adds this is important because its also a good way to prevent yourself from falling off your new routine.

Its usually that people start off really strong and then they end up falling back on old eating patterns, she says.

Id say some [diets] are easy to follow, most are not easy to follow because a lot of them end up eliminating a food group or they become overly restrictive or they require a lot of extra work and preparation, which is why we always recommend that when youre thinking about going on, or adopting a different way of eating, you look at something that would be more sustainable long term.

Smart says if you plan on giving up something you love like bread, maybe try phasing it out so you dont end up breaking down and give up entirely

Smart says that means if, say, youre trying to cut out carbohydrates that you do it in steps, set yourself small goals, and work out a pattern that you can stick to.

As for the future of fad diets? She says it doesnt look like they are going anywhere.

The food industry, the nutrition industry, all of these things keep coming up, so theres all these new and better ways of doing things, she says, but adds that is constantly being mixed with opinions and peoples personal beliefs.

What I would hope is that theres more information available so that consumers and individuals can make informed choices about what they want to do with their own diet and lifestyle and then seek out advice and help from a health care professional.

But Registered Holistic Nutritionist Bridgette Clare raises caution, warning theres a never ending supply of new fad diets, not all of them created equal.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. They promise weight loss in seven days, or thirty days, or its the new miracle, that sort of thing thats simply isnt the truth, she says.

Clare says rather than focusing on excluding things, we should be looking at ways to include healthy, whole foods into our diets

Clare says the key is a well-balanced diet that isnt restrictive to the point of being uncomfortable.

The reason being is that even if you were to stick with it for say thirty days or sixty days especially if youre cutting out entire food groups, its not sustainable, its not teaching you positive eating habits or teaching you about new and exciting foods, its far too restrictive to keep going long term.

Clare says she hopes to see a transition from restrictive fad diets to more people adopting more balanced diets built around whole foods.

It almost feels like it needs to be crazy for people to buy into it. Like it needs to be something way more complicated than just eating a balanced, varied diet with a focus on more plants and more veggies.

Clare says thats tough with the competition between fad diets, each trying to distinguish itself from the others with some special feature.

She recommends the Whole 30 diet, which she says could be seen as a fad diet but boils down to fit with her core principles.

[It] has such a great back bone, really just focusing on eating more whole foods. It does require some restrictions; eliminating dairy I believe and sugar and that sort of thing, so it might not be sustainable in the long term but of all the diets Ive seen, its the one that has the most holistic sustainable view to it.

Clare says if youre looking for a magic pill or magic diet, youre out of luck.

But she says if you do plan on trying a fad diet, do your reading, see if it really will help your body, and make sure you are still getting balance in what you eat.

Tune into your body and if it doesnt work for your body dont do it.

With fad diets having a start date, it can either set you up for a success or you will inevitably revert back to old habits.

Clare saysits often best just to create lifestyle changes by making one small difference at a time and build on positive eating habits, rather than straining your mental well-being by focusing on an end date.

Former Coronation Street star shows off incredible weight loss achieved in just 12 weeks – Manchester Evening News

Posted: February 24, 2017 at 2:46 pm

A former Coronation Street star has showed off his amazing body transformation achieved in 12 weeks.

Scott Wright, who lives in the Northern Quarter, was obese after being asked to gain weight for a film role. He had put on almost twice as much weight as the producers had wanted by bingeing on chocolate and fast food.

Scott, who was in the worst shape of his life before shedding two-and-a-half stone in less than three months, is now a muscle-bound hunk resembling his former Corrie stripper character Sam Kingston.

The former Rear of Year winners waist shrank 10 inches from 42in to 32in and his body fat went down from 27 per cent to just 10 per cent followed a rigorous diet and exercise regime.

Scott, 42, said: I looked terrible before I lost the weight. I was in shocking shape I had very little energy and completely ashamed of my man boobs and ever expanding waist line.

I had always had a keen interest in fitness and always tried to look after my body, to the extent that 10 years ago I took a break from acting and set up a gym and personal training business.

My problems started when I had to put on some weight for a film role. I was only supposed to put on a stone-and-a-half but I totally lost all my discipline and put on two-and-a-half stone.

The film producers were delighted because they wanted me looking a really heavy but I had a big weight problem.

In the past, I had always been able to shift the weight quickly, but this time I just could not get it off. I ended up in the worst shape of my life.

Scott, who appeared in the soap between 2000 and 2002 and famously stripped off in the Rovers Return for cheering revellers as the stripper The Masked Python, is now proudly showing off his new rippling torso, bulging biceps and six-pack.

6 Signs You’re A Yo-Yo Dieter And How To Finally Fix It – Elite Daily

Posted: February 24, 2017 at 2:46 pm

I know how hard dieting can be: I gained so much weight when I was sick with a hormonal disease called PCOS a few years ago, and losing it was TORTURE.

The meal plans and workouts, as well as avoiding dessert, made me wonder when the cycle would ever end and I pretty much always wanted to binge on dessert and fries.

Finally, when the weight actually DID come off, I developed a new lifestyle:one that involved both the foods that were good for me AND the ones that werent so great.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and considerupgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

Im happy to say Ive reached a happy medium where I can have those glasses of wine AND the kale salads, and not feel guilty about any of it.

But of course, thats easier said than done. When youre inundated every day by size 2 bodies and pretty much every weight loss trend imaginable, its hard to not get sucked in. And when big occasions come along, you want to lose weight fast so you look your best for them.

If it seems like youre constantly on a diet (until youre off it again), you might have a more serious issue: You may be a yo-yo dieter.

Lauren Slayton, author of The Little Book of Thin and NYC-based nutritionist, says,

I think of yo-yo dieting as the tendency to be either all in or all out when it comes to weight loss. And of course, as your attention to nutrition goes up and down, so does your weight.

Studies have shown excessive yo-yo dieting can permanently alter your metabolism, slowing it down rapidly. In addition, constantly gaining and losing weight can have other unhealthy side effects, such as coronary heart disease, excess stress in the body and inflammation.

The question is, are you at risk?

These are the signs you could be a yo-yo dieter, along with some tips to help you finally break free of the cycle for GOOD:

Yo-yo dieters are constantly either on a diet or off it. The diets they put themselves on are often very extreme, and so, they lose a lot of weight.

The thing is, once theyve hit their goal weight, they binge. Their diets are so restrictive, they feel a sense of freedom when they go off them. This excessive caloric intake, along with the damage the dieting inflicts on their metabolism, causes them to gain weight.

Then, the cycle continues again, with the dieter losing the weight again by more restrictive means.

Paleo diet, gluten-free diet, vegan diet, spin class, Crossfit: Youve tried them ALL.

While theres nothing wrong with being on-trend and knowing what Hollywoods up to in efforts to lose weight, yo-yo dieters often find themselves running from trend to trend, looking for that quick fix.

While all these trends are definitely effective when applied consistently on a daily basis, there isnt one thatll magically give you results overnight.

Be careful youre not getting sucked into the hype.

Your restrictive diets may cause you to give up sugar one day, or all carbs the next.

This is NOT sustainable.

First of all, all food groups contain criticalnutrients that are necessary for your health and well-being. Secondly, giving up something always makes you want it more.

When you restrict yourself, youre way more likely to crave the thing you gave up. This causes you to give up, binge and then start the cycle all over again.

Yo-yo dieters tend to have an all or nothing mindset. If they dont stick to their diet perfectly, they get frustrated and start feeling like failures.

And of course, because their diets are so restrictive, they inevitably fall off the wagon.

This leads to anxiety, and the yo-yo dieter takes this as an opportunity to give up.

That is, until the next diet comes along.

Yo-yo dieters get addicted to the thrill of quick weight loss through their restrictive diets no matter how short-lived these results may be.

While a balanced lifestyle change is obviously the best way to approach weight loss in a sustainable way, yo-yo dieters are more concerned with the here and now.

They would rather get the rush quick weight loss provides even if they have to go through hell to achieve it.

Studies show people who used to be overweight earlier on in life tend to be yo-yo dieters because they find it difficult to maintain the weight they currently have, even if its not that low.

Yo-yo dieters usually look at weight loss as a numbers game on the scale as opposed to a lifestyle they can sustain their entire lives.

As a result, they focus on cardio and the numbers dropped on the scale, as opposed to transforming the body through weights (which might make the number on the scale go UP) and nutrition.

But losing that much weight really fast means you have to lower your caloric intake to maintain that weight, and you can only rev it back up through strength training.

Nutritionist Khushboo Thadani says,

After you complete a strength training workout, for the next 24 to 48 hours, your body will have to work harder thannormal in order to repair the muscle tissues that have had stressimposed on them. As a result, your body burns more calories. Muscle is also highly metabolically active and requires more calories than fat to be maintained.

The thing is, if youre used to this pattern, it can be super hard to throw caution to the wind. It might feel so weird to start eating gluten again, or maybe youll hate weights with a vengeance.

But all hope isnt lost:Thadani has some tips to make sure you rev up your metabolism and get off the yo-yo dieting track for good.

She says,

Direct your energy towards making small changes. Choose two or three areas that are important to you and really focus on them. As you start to notice improvements in your well-being, these changes transition into habits that can last a lifetime. Build on them.

In addition, allow yourself some flexibility and recognize not every day is going to be perfect. Just because you miss a workout or eat more cake than you intended, its not the end of your healthy living journey.

Instead, treat the next meal as a fresh opportunity to nourish your body to thehighest standards and get back on track to success.

What does this mean? ALLOW YOURSELF SOME CAKE SOMETIMES. Itll keep you on track, and youll feel so much better if you dont restrict yourself.

As Slayton says,

Your eating plan should be more like a marriage than a one-night stand.

Sounds like a successful long-term relationship to me.

Eat like a caveman Courtesy Kyle Kranz Kyle Kranz is a 29-year-old former athlete who lost 85 pounds after gaining weight steadily after suffering a bad injury because of a car accident in middle school. "I was unable to play football and soccer like I previously had," he says. Then a friend of his, who was starting to focus on his health a bit more, invited Kranz to join him during his freshmen year of high school. While in high school, he credits his weight loss to 75 percent dietary changes and 25 percent working out, which for him, consisted of mostly lifting weights, since the accident didn't allow him to run. But the greatest difference for Kranz came from curbing what he puts in his mouth every single day. "You lose weight quickly when your diet changes from fast food, soda, and chips to meat and vegetables. I was the high schooler eating pre-portioned and pre-preparedthanks for the help, Mom!chicken breast and veggies for lunch. I also found out I actually enjoyed lifting weights, and put together a fairly respectable home gym in a spare bedroom," he says. Though he eventually recovered and was able to become an endurance athlete, doing everything from swimming to cycling to running, Kranz maintains a caveman-like attitude toward nutrition. "My favorite health advice is something I read from Michael Pollan, when he said, 'Eat real food. Not too much. Mostly plants.' Eating real food and not processed junk was the biggest game changer for me," he says. (Follow these 40 fast, easy tips to lose weight.) Be curious when it comes to working out

It was a life-changing car accident when he was 20 years old that pushed now 39-year-old Michael Tamez to focus on his health. Having always struggled with weight management, it wasn't until he realized how fragile his existence truly is that Tamez dedicated the next 20 years to being fit, happy, and healthy. Because of his severe sleep apnea, Tamez would fall asleep throughout the day at any given time. "One time I actually dozed off while driving on the highway and smashed into the car in front of me. Although nobody was severely injured, this shook me up pretty good," he says. The timing of the accidentDecember, 2001prompted Michael to make a New Year's Resolution: He wanted to start working out and actually stick with it for a whole month. After those 30 days passed though, he hadn't shed much weight, and he wasn't really inspired by the exercise. That's when his dad bought him a pair of boxing gloves, and he fell in love with the jab, cross, hook, uppercut three-minute rounds that helped him shed pounds quickly. Then when it warmed up outside, he started riding his bicycle, going for walks and hikes, and cleaning up his diet. His latest discovery? That he loves water sports. He and his wife moved to Florida and go kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, swimming, and bodyboarding. In addition to keeping the weight off, he's also been able to stop the sleep apnea and bring his blood pressure back down to normal. "I was ecstatic that I cured myself with exercise and food," he says. That's why Tamez's best tip is to do some soul-searching around why you want to lose the weight and find exercises that really inspire you to stay active. These days, Tamez, who shed 105 pounds, has had added yoga and meditation to balance his mind, too.

For now 54-year-old Scott Schmaren, battling his weight was a lifelong fight that led him down a very dark road. "I had lost and gained 100s of pounds, and I always failed. One time, I had just gained back the 165 pounds that I lost, and I gave up on the will to live," he shares. He attempted suicide by attempting to overdose on painkillers, but miraculously woke up with a renewed spirit. "I woke up the next day with the sun shining through my window and experienced a profound sense of peace, and in that moment I accepted responsibility for my life and I set out on a quest to learn how my mind worked because it was always self-sabotaging my weight loss." Though he did transform his diet and exercise consistently, he credits keeping 185 pounds off for good to completely changing how he imagined himself in the mirror. "All my life I was obese and the image I had of myself in my mind was being fat, so anytime I lost weight, I felt like I was going against how I really saw myself and rationalized that being overweight was normal," he shares. "When I finally changed that image of myself in my subconscious mind through hypnosis my life began to change: I created an image of myself that I had a strong, healthy, lean attractive body weighing 175 pounds or less, and that is where I am at today." It was a question from an unlikely source that snapped Lindsay Tejada into action mode to finally shed the weight. She was spending time with her 5-year-old niece who simply asked, "But, why are you so fat?" She didn't want to be known as the "fat aunt," so she looked for a way to shed pounds and stay motivated. What worked for her was a program called Take Shape For Life, which offers diet plans, health coaches, and connection to a community of other people who are also trying to lose weight. She lost more than 100 pounds and it was her niece's face that kept her motivated. "My biggest health tip would be to determine your why," she says. "When my niece said, 'I can wrap my arms around you now!' I knew it was all worth it."
