Red Venezuela, Pink Flamingos, and the New Hollywood Diet – Townhall

Recently, I joked about political diets, noting that actress Lena Dunham complained that the soul-crushing pain and devastation and hopelessness of the new Trump presidency had caused her to lose weight.

On the other hand, Barbra Streisand and others in Hollywood claim their unease about President Trump is triggering them to overeat and gain weight.

Then, I compared these Trump-inspired diets to the Maduro Diet.

The Maduro Diet, you ask? Thats the namesake of Venezuelan President Nicols Maduro, the socialist successor to the late Hugo Chvez. Maduro is presiding over the complete economic collapse of what, prior to socialism, had long been the richest country in South America.

Nonetheless, last September, President Maduro joked, The Maduro diet, thats the one that makes you tough. You wont even need Viagra now.

In response to the dictators comedic chauvinismo, the Venezuelan newspaper El Estmulo published a list of people who have died in various parts of the country because of the rigors of the diet that bears his name.

Having nothing to eat is felt by the millions, added the paper. A study by More Consulting for the opposition National Assembly says that more than 53 percent of Venezuelans have gone to bed once without trying food thanks to the Maduro diet.

A recent Living Conditions Survey a collaborative effort that included the Andrs Bello Catholic University, the Central University of Venezuela, and the Simn Bolvar University concluded that nearly three in four Venezuelans lost on average 19 pounds in 2016. Consistent malnutrition does mean spectacular levels of weight-loss, of course, and people can decide for themselves about the benefits or lack thereof.

A month ago, the Miami Herald informed that, People have become so desperate, according to biologists and biology students at Zulia University, that they are butchering and eating flamingos.

The Herald also reported: In the citys dump, more evidence of hunger-driven desperation: dismembered dogs, cats, donkeys, horses and pigeons have been found since last year, all skinned or plucked, with signs of having been eaten, according to the citys garbage teams.

Theres no doubt that food shortages are a serious issue in Venezuela, responded TeleSUR, a television network based in Caracas, Venezuela, and funded by the governments of Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Uruguay, and Venezuela. But one should take reports that make kooky unsubstantiated claims about the crisis like alleged flamingo eating with a grain of salt.

If one can find a grain of salt.

TeleSUR alleges that, Wealthy right-wing business owners in Venezuela, especially those in the supermarket industry, are intentionally hoarding food products so they can resell them at higher prices and make large profits. Food importing companies allied with the opposition are also manipulating import figures to raise prices.

Yet, considering the political repression, if there was such evidence, those business owners might join the thousands of Venezuelans being arrested or the hundreds of documented longterm political prisoners, including opposition leader Leopoldo Lpez, who was sentenced to nearly 14 years in prison on ridiculously trumped up charges.

Repression and, specifically, systematic politically-motivated incarceration continue to be State policy in Venezuela, states a new report from Luis Almagro, the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS). Between January 1 and December 31 of 2016, Foro Penal Venezolano documented 2,732 political arrests on charges ranging from having demonstrated in a political protest such as the Toma de Caracas or the Toma de Venezuela to having posted something against the national government or a public official on Twitter.

Mr. Almagro told the Washington Post that his report fully documents the Venezuelan governments abuses, rights violations, curtailment of civil, political and electoral freedoms, poverty, hunger, deprivation of liberty, torture, censorship, and the whole catalogue of violations of political, social and personal dignity. He calls for the suspension of Venezuelas membership in the OAS, which is long overdue.

The Human Rights Foundation called for that nine years ago.

Last year, millions risked government attacks to sign petitions to recall President Maduro, only to see the government refuse to abide by the constitution.

The Obama administration took no serious action, and urged the opponents of the Maduro dictatorship to engage in talks with the regime, a dialogue that predictably wentnowhere. The administrations caution, a Washington Post editorial suggested, may have had more to do with avoiding offense to the regimes last supporter the Castro regime in Cuba with which President Barack Obama was pursuing what he saw as a legacy-making detente.

On the other hand, President Trump has already met with the wife of Leopoldo Lpez, the imprisoned opposition leader, and the U.S. State Department has called for the release of political prisoners, which also include former Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledezma. Yesterday, another Post editorial urged President Trump to align himself with the OAS chief and with the cause of democracy in Latin America.

Lets hope the Mr. Trump does . . . providing some small assistance that helps lead, hopefully sooner rather than later, to the people of Venezuela eating more . . . and living free.

And perhaps to certain Hollywood socialists eating crow, if not flamingo.

First-calvers have special diet requirements – Enid News & Eagle

Posted: March 19, 2017 at 8:44 am

Calving season either has started or is just around the corner. Although first-calvers represent your future brood cows, they require more labor, higher quality feeds, and they reward your efforts by weaning the lightest group of calves in the herd.

This is temporary, because, if we have done our homework with due diligence, they will reward us by being productive cows for a long time.

One of the challenges is providing a high-quality diet to these females after calving. In many situations, the energy needs are not met, and the first-calf female loses weight and body condition from the time of calving to the start of the breeding season.

The pounds of protein or energy needed by the first-calf female compared to a mature cow at the same stage of gestation or lactation are not all that different. However, the percent of the diet that needs to be protein or energy between these two groups of females is different.

The difference is because of the amount of feed/forage they can eat. The mature cow can eat more feed compared to the younger female.

For this reason, beginning at least three weeks before calving, first-calvers need to be managed and fed separate from the mature cows. Research from the University of Nebraska reported indicates a first-calf-heifer within three weeks of calving experiences a 17 percent decrease in daily feed intake.

These data further illustrate the need to separate first-calf-heifers from mature cows beginning at least three weeks before the start of the calving season and illustrate that nutrient density of the diet has to be high because intake is restricted. Intake is re-established to more normal levels by about one week post-calving.

The first-calf-females post-calving need to consume a diet that is at least 62 percent TDN and 10 percent to 11 percent crude protein, depending on level of milk production. Feeding bermudagrass hay that tests 58 percent TDN and 12 percent crude protein, prairie hay that tests 54 percent TDN and 6.5 percent crude protein, bromegrass hay that is 58 percent TDN and 11 percent crude protein, or early-bloom alfalfa that is 60 percent TDN and 20 percent crude will not meet the first-calf-females energy (TDN) needs, whether feeding individually or in a combination of feeds. Some of these forages will not meet their protein needs. A high energy feed needs to be supplemented. Corn, distillers grains, gluten feed, 20 percent cube, or silage may be good choices. Make sure the protein requirement is met, especially when corn or silage is fed.

In ranch situations, the supplement may be fed on the ground instead of in bunks. Depending on the quality of the hay and the energy content of the supplement, it may take two to three pounds per head per day to meet requirements. Likely there is minimal waste when feeding an energy cube/cake or whole shell corn.

A young beef female poses challenges, but she is the future of your cowherd. Do not short her after calving; especially do not skimp on the energy. She has enough challenges between calving and the beginning of the breeding season. Do not over-feed her, but give her an opportunity to be a productive part of the herd.

Nelson is Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service ag educator for Garfield County.

Medi-Weightloss tackling obesity in Woodstock – Cherokee Tribune Ledger News

Posted: March 19, 2017 at 8:44 am

Medi-Weightloss of Woodstock will host its grand opening with Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce officials on Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, free body composition analysis, a smoothie bar, hors doeuvres and music.

The Woodstock location that opened Jan. 21 is one of 99 locations nationwide spanning 25 states and offering help to residents wanting to reach their goal weight and transition to a healthier lifestyle.

Established in 2005, Medi-Weightloss offers a physician-supervised weight loss program known as The One That Works!

Physicians and medical professionals provide individualized care based on each patients goals, health status, and medical history, according to a news release.

The program includes weekly consultations that focus on nutrition, lifestyle and exercise. Education is provided on how to lose weight in the real world using real food without prepackaged meals. Patients learn how to keep weight off through a specialized Wellness Phase.

In addition to weight loss programs for adults resulting in over three million pounds lost, Medi-Weightloss offers specialized weight loss programs for adolescents and diabetics.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, over two-thirds of Americans are obese or overweight and Georgia now has the 19th highest adult obesity rate in the nation, the release said.

Georgias adult obesity rate is currently 30.7 percent, up from 20.6 percent in 2000 and from 10.1 percent in 1990. One group fighting this epidemic is Medi-Weightloss Clinics, said Medi-Weightloss of Woodstock owner Arthur Tsiropoulos.

In Georgia, 30 percent of the population is obese, he said. As an Atlanta native, I find the statistics shocking. We are struggling with spikes in diabetes, heart disease and depression. I want to do something about it.

Obesity continues to be a huge health concern that can lead to even more health problems Tsiropoulos said, including high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis and certain types of cancer.

Medi-Weightloss medical director Dr. Sejal Shah said it is critical to get a good nights sleep.

Sleep deprivation makes you hungry, said Shah. Leptin is the chemical that tells your brain when youre full, when it should burn calories and when it should create energy for your body to use. When you dont get enough sleep, you end up with too little leptin in your body. The decrease in leptin brought on by sleep deprivation can result in a constant feeling of hunger and a general slow-down of your metabolism.

To help those who are struggling to lose weight, Tsiropoulos offered some advice.

Stop looking for a quick fix, he said. Many people think the best way to lose weight is to get the weight off as quickly as possible, when in fact it takes time. To keep the pounds off it is important to make long-term changes that will stick.

Identify your deterrents, said Tsiropoulos.

It is important to recognize emotional triggers as many can lead to overeating. Common triggers include stress, fatigue and relationship problems, he said. Treat yourself. Every milestone you cross, reward yourself with a new fitness accessory.

Medi-Weightloss of Woodstock offers patients a comprehensive wellness program and premier services, including medical weight loss program customized to each patient, weekly vitamin injections providing energy and metabolize stored fat, appetite suppressants if medically appropriate one-on-one counseling, lifestyle modification training and nutrition education weekly menus, recipes, specialty smoothies and prepared foods easy-to-follow exercise plans and the final wellness phase teaches patients to keep weight off for life.

The Medi-Weightloss grand opening in Woodstock will take place from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at The Centre at Woodstock, 12195 Highway 92 at Trickum Road. For more information, contact Lucy Flinn at 404-402-0992 or email lflinn@mediweightlossclinics.com.

Weight loss, especially with surgery, tied to lower risk of heart failure – Washington Post

Posted: March 19, 2017 at 8:44 am

By Reuters By Reuters March 18 at 12:00 PM

Obese people who get surgery to lose weight have half the risk of developing heart failure as do patients who make lifestyle changes to shed excess pounds, a recent study suggests.

We were surprised by the large difference in heart failure incidence between the two groups, said lead study author Johan Sundstrom of Uppsala University in Sweden.

Its possible that gastric bypass patients had a lower risk of heart failure because they lost more weight than the group trying to do so without surgery. Researchers also found that losing 22 pounds by any means was tied to a 23 percent drop in heart failure risk.

The study team examined data on 25,805 obese people who had gastric bypass surgery, which reduces the stomach to a small pouch, and 13,701 patients who were put on low-calorie diets. After following half of the patients for at least four years, people who had gastric bypass were found to be 46 percent less likely to have developed heart failure.

After one year, surgery patients had an average weight loss 41.4 pounds greater than that of those who relied on diet and exercise, the study found. After two years, surgery was associated with an average weight loss that was 49.8 pounds more than those who undertook lifestyle changes.

Some previous research has linked obesity to heart failure, and a growing body of evidence suggests that obesity might directly cause the heart condition, Sundstrom said. While the new study wasnt designed to prove a causal relationship, it adds more evidence in support of this possibility.

Obesity may increase the risk for heart failure through the smorgasbord of conditions that accompany obesity, such as high blood pressure, high blood lipids, diabetes and rapid irregular heartbeat, Sundstrom said by email. Bariatric surgery has been associated with lower incidence of all of these risk factors.

There is also some evidence that obesity per se may cause heart failure, a condition sometimes called obesity cardiomyopathy, Sundstrom said. From that perspective, weight loss may preserve cardiac function by reducing the hearts pump demand and stress.

Its possible that factors not included in the data influenced how much weight people lost or whether they developed heart failure, the authors note.

Heart failure tends to afflict the old, and the study of younger adults may not have followed patients long enough to fully understand the impact of surgery on the heart, said Sheldon Litwin of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Most patients undergoing bariatric surgery are relatively young; they are at pretty low risk of developing heart failure even if they are obese, Litwin, who wasnt involved in the study, said by email.

Even so, the study covers new ground and helps establish a connection between weight loss and a reduced risk of heart failure, said Mary Norine Walsh, a researcher at St. Vincent Heart Center in Indianapolis and president-elect of the American College of Cardiology.

A person of interest in a house fire that endangered six of her children was pulled dead from a submerged SUV Thursday, after a dramatic rescue of the womans 3-month-old son from the icy waters.

Cristy Lynn Campbell, 32, of Glen Carbon, Illinois, is also suspected of killing her ex-husband, Justin Campbell, before setting the fire. The 37-year-old father of her seven children was identified Friday as the man who was found dead in the familys fire-gutted house, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Justin Campbell died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Madison County coroner.

Cristy Campbell died of exposure and drowning after she drove her SUV into Silver Lake near Highland, about 16 miles east of her home, where the house fire was reported, the Post-Dispatch reported.

An EMT was hailed as a hero after swimming into the lake and rescuing the couples infant son, who he found floating inside the sinking vehicle. Paramedic Todd Zobrist pulled the boys lifeless body out of the SUV and used the roof of the vehicle as a surface to perform CPR.

The baby was taken to a St. Louis hospital for treatment, and he was expected to be released Friday after making a full recovery,ABC News said. Madison County Sheriff John Lakin credited Zobrist with saving the infants life.

Fortunately, there is something good that can come of this,Lakin told the Post-Dispatch.

The baby and his six siblings, four boys and two girls ranging in age from 4 to 14, were placed in the care of family members.Community organizations have begun to collect donations of clothing, shoes and toys, as well as monetary donations to help the children replenish what they lost in the fire, the Post-Dispatch reported.

Volunteers are also considering starting a college fund for the children.

The family tragedy began around 5:15 a.m. Thursday when a 911 caller reported a fire at Campbells home. Though the six older children escaped the flames and ran to a nearby Walmart for help, Justin Campbells body was found in the house after the fire had been extinguished, the Post-Dispatch reported.

KTVI in St. Louis reported Thursday morning that Cristy Campbell was named a person of interest in the fire, and that authorities were searching for her. At the same time, the news station reported the SUV going into the lake just before 6 a.m.

It was initially unclear if the two deadly incidents were related. The connection was confirmed when Campbells ID was found in the SUV, listing the address of the burned house as her home address,KMOV in St. Louis reported.

A gun was also found in the vehicle, the Post-Dispatch said.

Campbells body, which was found about 400 feet from the SUV, was pulled from the lake around 11:15 a.m. Thursday.

The Post-Dispatch reported that security camera footage from a neighbors home on Dogwood Lane showed an SUV leaving the Campbell home just before 5 a.m. The video, obtained by the newspaper and posted online, showed the headlights coming on around 4:50 a.m. and, after several minutes, the SUV backing out of the driveway.

Some of the children could be seen in the grainy footage, chasing the vehicle as it drove away.

About three minutes later, light from the flames could be seen lighting up the side of a neighboring house. Four of the children, the smallest carrying what looked like a blanket, were seen fleeing past the camera in the direction of Walmart, where they sought help.

Cristy Campbells Facebook page is filled with photos of her children and kudos for their accomplishments at school. Her profile photo shows her swimming with a dolphin.

A neighbor, who said she believed that Justin Campbell was living with his ex-wife and children, told the Post-Dispatch that the children were always busy with a variety of activities that earned them awards and trophies that filled their home.

The neighbor, Sherry Ricker, told the newspaper that she saw Cristy Campbell and held her infant son just three days earlier.

She was happier than I had seen her in a long time, Ricker said.

Authorities on Friday were still piecing together the timeline of events in the case, butthe Post-Dispatch reported that court records show a long history of problems in the Campbells relationship, including before their 2006 marriage. Justin Campbell was charged with domestic abuse in 2005, when his then-girlfriend was pregnant with the couples third child.

Cristy Campbell filed for divorce in 2010, but later changed her mind. She filed again in 2012, alleging that her husband was physically abusive. She was granted a protection order against him, but later asked to have it withdrawn.

She was awarded custody of the children when the divorce was finalized later that year, the Post-Dispatch reported. Two years later, she requested that Justin Campbell have supervised visitation after two of the children accused their father of pinching, hitting and choking them.

New Delhi: The world's heaviest women, 36-year-old Eman Ahmed, has garnered worldwide support during her journey towards weight loss.

Having lost nearly 140 kilos after undergoing bariatric surgery in Mumbai's Saifee Hospital, Eman is on the way to a steady, albeit slow recovery.

Unfortunately, there are many obstacles in the way of Eman's weight loss goal. Ailments and conditions like diabetes, hypothyroidism, hypertension and severe lung disease have given way to a right-side heart failure, not to forget the multiple spells of epileptic fits she suffers every day.

An update posted by her doctors on an online portal said, We are happy to inform you that her post-op recovery is going fairly well.

Currently down to 358 kilos, She lost 120kg in less than a month, but that was mainly the fluids, said Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, who heads the retinue of doctors working to 'Save Eman', the Times of India (TOI) reported.

The initial weight loss allowed us to operate safely and successfully. The battle is won, but the war is yet to be won. There is a long way to go before we can say Eman Ahmed is finally out of the woods, said Dr Lakdawala.

TOI further quoted Dr Lakdawala saying that, Even deciding her antibiotic dose is a long exercise, involving many doctors. We have to take care that one doctor's prescription isn't counter-productive to another's treatment," he added. "It is a tightrope walk on a daily basis. She is about 30% better than she was.

Nearly all her organs have borne the brunt of her weight, her obese frame measuring five feet upon her arrival in India.

5 Ways to Lose Weight Fast! – Huffington Post

Posted: March 19, 2017 at 8:43 am

Yep, you heard that right! There are some small things you can begin doing right this minute, if you want to lose weight. It works because taking small steps, add up to big changes. Read on to find out what you can start doing today.

Okay, so youve heard this tip before and there is a very good reason whyit works! If you carry water with you all day long and sip it to stay hydrated, you will lose weight. Yes, you will run to the bathroom a lot, but it will be worth it. Your skin will look more supple, you will have more energy (less sluggish), and your stomach will feel fuller so you wont be as hungry. As an added bonus, there is water everywhere you go, including Starbucks, and its free:) For those of us that need a bit more guidance on how to get enough water, heres what you do: Place eight 10 to 12 ounce bottles of water on your counter first thing in the morning. By the end of the day, it should be gone. Easy, peesey. No pun intended.

Twenty minutes is all it takes to get in a workout these days, and every busy mom has 20 minutes. I should know, I am one:) Don t be old school and defeat yourself by thinking you need an hour just to find yourself doing nothing at all because you dont have a full hour. An at home 20-minute workout that you can do 3 to 5 times a week with light weights will help speed up your metabolism and burn more calories plus increase your energy level. It also helps to work multiple muscle groups at the same time which is what I do in the following workout Ive included for you here:

I fell in love with Prosecco when my friend from Italy came to town and gave me a bottleor two. It is somewhere between a wine and a champagneonly without the headache that the large bubbles in champagne give you or the sugar hangover that wine gives you. And news flash, it is LOWER in calories. Thats right, it is the lowest calorie alcoholic beverage out there. Ive never met a mom that doesnt like to have a glass of wine at bedtime or with the girls so this is good news. Fewer calories, need I say more?

Motivate yourself! Thats rightinstead of flipping through magazines and finding pictures of someone you want to look like, find a picture of YOU at your absolute best. You know, the one you would post as your profile photo on eHarmony or other social media sites. Looking at yourself every time you go to grab something from the fridge holds you accountable and will help you make better choices. What a great way to remind yourself of what you can achieve when you are motivated and help you get there once again. A great tool to help you stay on track.

Half your sandwich, split your salad, cut your desert in half. Save money and calories every time you eat by taking home half of whatever you order for later. Better yet, put it in your kids lunch the next day. Seriouslyleftovers rock. I actually learned this tip from my teenage daughter who goes out with 2 or 3 of her friends and they split something like a Chicken Caesar salad. At first I thought they were doing it to save money (proud mama), but soon realized the portions are so big these days it was more than enough. We can learn a lot from our kids! Try it on your husband or boyfriend too when you go out to dinner. They may think youre trying to give them a message that they need to eat less (like mine), however when you are splitting at a restaurant, you usually end up trying something new which is always a good thing. Think outside the box.
