Tackling fat and taking back summer: Part 2

Posted: April 26, 2012 at 5:11 pm

In the last issue we tackled fat and explored a couple of tips to decrease the intake, therefore burning what the body has to help promote weight loss. Again, you only have to try to stick to even just one or two of these options consistently, for about a month, to see results. Remember to find a Registered Dietitian (RD) in order to further enhance your weight loss endeavor safely and effectively, tailoring it specifically to your needs. Go to: http://www.eatright.org/programs/rdfinder/

Bite it, write it, and win

Keep a food log and every time you have something to eat (even if just a bite), write it down and then look over your day to see your patterns.

Just the act of writing it down it keeps you more mindful and conscious of what you are eating says Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, and author of The Flexitarian Diet. Discuss with an RD (http://www.eatright.org/programs/rdfinder/)where you have barriers and some options that will impact your diet.

Just the right measure

Cooking for one? Most college students are. Unfortunately that could mean eating for two or three sometimes. If leftovers are difficult to store, dinnerware is hard to come by, or fast-food options are the norm, portions tend to be above and beyond what is needed. Try measuring. Invest in some dollar store measuring cups and spoons or a food scale and follow the dietary guidelines (http://health.gov/dietaryguidelines/) for the portion of that food recommended to give you a visual cue of what the right amount is. You will quickly learn what to cut down to and veto the rest.

Other fast tips to try:

Pump up the volume, not the jam

Eating foods that fill you up at the start of your meal will stave off the need to grab the fried pickles. Try to start with a broth based soup, house salad, dressing on the side, and load up your main entre with fruits and vegetables. Keep the sugar content lower by having real fruit with yogurt, toast and on desserts rather than jams, sauces and artificial flavorings. The added fiber and vitamins and minerals will fill you up and save on calories.

Pack a protein punch

Weight Loss For Couples – Rapid Fat Loss for Men and Women – Video

25-04-2012 16:05 =============== =============== How To Lose Weight Fast For Couples What couple doesn't want to walk into parties and restaurants and turn heads? For most people that will be possible when body fat percentages get below 15% for men, and 20% for women. Unfortunately, for most couples, routines are hard to break and dieting only works as a team effort. Even worse, most diets don't properly take into account the differences between men and women. As a result, most times couples decide to go on a diet together, the results are not what they hoped for, and short lived at best. There is a key ingredient to weight loss that most consumers don't know about, and that the diet industry would prefer people don't understand. Diet gurus on Oprah, Dr. Oz, and specific gurus like Tim Ferris, Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers and others don't cover this well. That key ingredient is the liver. By following a diet plan that stresses the health of your liver, both men and women can shed pounds amazingly fast. Weight loss of up to 10 pounds in a couple of weeks is common. By following such a diet plan together, couples can lose weight quickly, and attain lasting results because of their shared knowledge of proper nutrition. There is an excellent presentation online detailing this. By following the recommendations in the presentation, couples can go from flabby to hot in no time at all, and they can keep the weight off for good. If you want to know how to lose weight for ...

Eating Recovery Center Encourages Healthy Lifestyle Choices in Preparation for Summertime Fun, Food and Fashion

Posted: April 26, 2012 at 5:11 pm

DENVER, CO--(Marketwire -04/25/12)- As a barrage of advertisements urging men and women to begin weight loss programs in preparation for summer activities hit the airwaves and span the pages of magazines, Eating Recovery Center (www.EatingRecoveryCenter.com), an international center for eating disorders recovery, urges springtime dieting caution. Because diets are one of the most common eating disorders triggers, Eating Recovery Center advises individuals to think twice before beginning "quick fix" weight loss regimens and to consult a physician before engaging in diet or exercise programs.

A 2010 Experian Simmons DataStream survey showed that dieting among American women peaked in late spring/early summer, a timeframe in which a reported 48.5 percent of women said they were currently dieting. Too often, efforts to prepare for summer turn to unhealthy -- and sometimes even dangerous -- weight loss behaviors with the goal of feeling more comfortable in swimsuits and form-fitting, revealing summer clothing and "looking good" for activities such as vacations and weddings.

"In general society tends to support, encourage and even applaud dieting that is perceived as preparatory for an event or time of year," said Julie Holland, MHS, CEDS, chief marketing officer of Eating Recovery Center. "This 'community-supported' weight loss is dangerous because it could potentially send someone down the path of developing an eating disorder, while his or her friends and family unknowingly encourage unhealthy behaviors."

In an effort to prevent dangerous summertime behaviors that could potentially trigger eating disorders, Eating Recovery Center urges individuals to avoid the five most common weight loss and dieting behaviors:

1. Restrictive diets: Gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan diets and cleanses have been popularized by celebrities as seemingly successful methods for slimming down. Some people have food allergies or medical conditions for which these types of restrictive diets can be helpful. However, for the vast majority, removing entire food categories from a diet can rob the body of essential nutrients and kick-start a pattern of food restriction. 2. "Thinspiration": While social networking sites such as Tumblr, Pinterest and Instagram have restricted users from posting pro-eating disorders content, thinspiration still runs rampant online. What may start as casually posting photos of men and women at an individual's "goal weight" or "ideal" body shape can quickly spiral out of control and drive unrealistic, obsessive thinking and behaviors. 3. Crash or fad diets: Dieting is the most common behavior that triggers eating disorders. Furthermore, diets simply do not work; about 95 percent of people who lose weight by dieting will regain the weight in one to five years. 4. Excessive exercise: Over-exercising can result in excessive wear and tear on muscles, bones and joints. Furthermore, if individuals do not rest and give their bodies time to recuperate, injuries can quickly follow. 5. Diet pills or aids: Diet pills, diuretics and other over-the-counter weight loss aids promise users a quick fix. However, the long-term consequences of diet pill use can include irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, gastrointestinal problems and -- in serious cases -- even death.

"Any weight loss regimen that seems too good to be true almost certainly is," explains Holland. "Rather than looking for a 'quick fix,' make a choice to practice a healthier, sustainable lifestyle that emphasizes body acceptance and realistic goals and focuses on moderation."

Eating Recovery Center recommends that anyone seeking to begin a weight loss program first consult a physician. Individuals with a family history of eating disorders who engage in weight loss behaviors are at a significantly higher risk of triggering an eating disorder.

Controversial diet uses feeding tube to lose weight fast

Posted: April 26, 2012 at 5:11 pm

Every bride wants to look her best on her wedding day. But some are going to extreme measures to lose weight. Theyre using whats called the K-E Diet. It involves running a feeding tube through your nose and subsisting on an 800 calorie liquid diet.

This illustrates how desperate people are for weight loss, especially a person whos about to get married, said Dr. Ethan Lazarus.

Lazarus treats patients at the Clinical Nutrition Center said this isnt an appropriate option for brides who want to drop a few pounds.

Done with proper medical supervision, many doctors would say is an appropriate treatment for someone who is really heavy and needs to lose weight for medical reasons, Lazarus said. But thats not typically a style of eating plan that we would lose 20 pounds for a wedding with.

Pure Barre in Cherry Creek offers classes for brides-to-be wanting to get in shape.

Im going to have these pictures for the rest of my life, so I want to look the best I can for these pictures and my special day, said bride-to-be Tiffany Grimm.

The classes make her work hard, and shes willing to put in the effort. But shes not willing to damage her body.

I love my food, and I think any type of diet thats a crazy fad diet, its good for momentary use, but then youre going to gain it back, Grimm said. thats not something I want to put my body through.

Dr. Lazarus says Tiffany has the right idea.

I wouldnt try starting a weight loss program 20 days before the wedding, he said. I think if we want to look great for the wedding it really behooves us to give ourselves 3 or 6 or 9 or even 12 months.

Protect yourself from weight-loss wreckers with these strategies

Your best buddy can throw a wrench in your weight loss just as easily as pizza, french fries, and fast food. Those who are close to us have great influence on our eating and exercise habits, says Angela Ginn, registered dietician and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Stay dedicated to your goal by watching out for the diet damagers in your life.

Your boyfriend

Your guy can chow down on wings and pound back beer without gaining weight. Men have a higher amount of muscle mass and lower body fat percent than women, said Heather Mangieri, registered dietician and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Their energy needs are higher, so they can consume more calories. But that doesnt mean your next date night is ruined. Bowing out of the undeclared food competition and taking responsibility for your meal portions is enough to help steer clear of this diet disaster.

AMY BETH BENNETT/SUN SENTINEL/MCT The people you are closest to can have the worst effects on your diet. Here, Madeline Schwartz puts out napkins as she and her husband, Ed, eat lunch in Weston, Fla.

Your grandmother

No matter how much you fight it, your grandma always wants to feed you. She sees it as a welcoming gesture and you see it as diet sabotage, Mangieri said . But instead of completely giving into nanas attempts to put meat on your bones, set some limits. Just help yourself to a single serving or pack a doggie bag for later, says Ginn. Even bringing a healthy snack of your own to contribute can help take the attention off of you and avoid hurt feelings.

Your kids

Whether its to convince them that veggies are edible or an attempt to avoid wasting food, moms tend to eat off their childrens plates. First, you need to break the no food left behind mentality. Instead of picking at scraps, have your kid help you wrap up the leftovers. Not serving them too much in the first place will also benefit both of you -- your child wont overeat, and you wont face temptation during cleanup.

Your college roommates

Pizza, wings and beer may have dominated your college diet, but the new (well, older) you has a harder time preventing pounds from packing on -- you have your decreased muscle mass and metabolism to thank for that. When you reunite with your dorm pals, resist the urge to fall back into old habits -- and hold your ground if your friends make fun of you for it. Equip yourself with one-liners, suggests Mangieri. Something like, Its good of you to offer, but Im feeling way too good to destroy this feeling, she says. If you keep consistently making those comments, eventually theyll get it. Or bypass this sticky situation altogether. Ginn says planning outings around outdoor activities instead of food can help keep your weight loss on track without bringing it to everyone elses attention.

An ‘Awesome April’ plan for shedding pounds

Posted: April 22, 2012 at 9:10 pm

Dont wait for the first hot day of the year to realize last seasons bathing suits and shorts are too snug. Be happy about the way you look and feel by starting an Awesome April routine. I call this The Buckle Down Diet, because it requires hard work and dedication and it isnt easy.

April is the perfect time to start. It gives you a good two months to slim down and get into shape before Memorial Day weekend. The weather is good enough to lift your mood and energy, but not SO good that you want to slack off and grab a few cocktails while lounging outside.

Following these instructions for the next two months will make weight loss achievable and should help you drop two pounds per week. Bring food from home and avoid eating out as much as possible. You dont need to be a cook, but you can assemble ingredients, pack them up and go.

TIP #1: CALORIES

Newsflash: Not all foods are created equal! You can eat more food for fewer calories, or less food and more calories. The choice is yours. A calorie is a measurement of heat. Everyone burns a different amount of calories based on their height, weight, sex and activity factor. The goal is the same for all who want to lose weight: eat fewer calories than you burn. Im not saying to eat less food, just less calories because calories arent all equal. Just one slice of pizza can be 350 calories. A big bowl of tossed salad with cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, olives, peppers, mushrooms, grilled chicken, half of an avocado and vinaigrette dressing can also be 350 calories. Maximizing your intake without maximizing your calories is the best way to keep weight off. Hunger makes us go off our plan. The following food combinations are essential for staying full.

With the protein from the yogurt and fiber from the berries and cereal, its a sure way to stay full or hold you over a few hours until lunch. Fiber One can be dry on its own so give it a little natural sweetness by adding berries.

LUNCH: 100-CALORIE WHOLE WHEAT TORTILLA WITH TOMATOES, 1/2 CUP OF BLACK BEANS AND 3oz OF GRILLED CHICKEN

Protein from lean grilled chicken, plus the fiber provided in the tortilla and beans will be satisfying. Most takeout places that have wraps and burritos are 350-400 calories and hardly any fiber in just the wrap/tortilla alone. Instead of fatty sour cream, slice of an avocado and mash it in. You want the satiety and flavor from the avocado, but eating more than of the fruit will make this meal higher in calories. Other good dressings for your wraps are mustards, low fat mayo and salsa.

Mariah Carey: Singer Talks About Weight Loss After Birth Of Her Twins [Photos: Before and After]

Posted: April 22, 2012 at 9:10 pm

By Ankita Mehta | Apr 22, 2012 07:15 AM EDT

Mariah Carey took nearly a year to get back into shape after giving birth to twins. Rejoicing in the post-baby weight loss, she graced the cover of Shape magazine to flaunt her well-toned body.

Talking to Shape Magazine, the pop diva said that she understood and sympathized with women who have weighty issues and struggle to shed pounds, after she found herself in the same predicament since she became the mother of twins, Monroe and Moroccan.

"I put on 70 lbs. but if you look at me in pictures you'd think it was more like 9,000 lbs. I have a lot of empathy with people who have to lose a lot of weight."

The 42-year-old singer revealed that staying in shape after pregnancy was not easy. Posing in itsy bitsy white briefs, she shows off her flat belly and toned legs on the cover of Shape Magazine's May issue.

Carey told the magazine: "Pregnancy was probably the best and the hardest thing I'll ever go through. I know for a lot of women, it can be wonderful and relatively easy. But for me, it was like 'Okay, honey, do you have to do everything the hard way?'"

Carey's spokesperson Jenny Craig also said that it wasn't as easy to drop all that weight as she had hoped.

Carey revealed that before the birth of her twins, losing weight and shaping up meant more stress on the workout regime, but after the babies, she believes it's just the opposite. She said that since becoming a mother, she has to watch what she eats more than how long she works out.

"I used to be able to slim down just by exercising more, but that's changed. Since having the babies, I realize that 90 percent of losing weight is my diet."

"Today my workout routine is more about getting and staying toned. And for me, that means either taking hour-long walks a few times a week or jumping in the pool three or four days a week to do 45 minutes of aquatic exercises," she said.

STRIVING FOR 'IMPREFECTION': You're going to wear THAT for your wedding?

Posted: April 22, 2012 at 10:11 am

I do not wish to be the type of person who slowly, sadly shakes his head, pining for a simpler past, longingly opening conversations with When I was a kid ... . Moreover, when I become aware of an unfortunate societal trend, I try to prevent cranking up my inner curmudgeon, cynically inquiring of my peers, What has gone wrong with our society?

Having said that, something has gone wrong with our society because -- when I was a kid -- brides-to-be didn't shove tubes up their noses to lose weight before their weddings.

While skimming TV channels, images of young women commuting to work with feeding tubes hanging from their noses flitted across the screen. They didn't seem ill; quite the contrary, they looked to be in the pink (yet another reference from when I was a kid). The reporter explained that some women with upcoming nuptials are resorting to a severe calorie-restricted crash diet to drop 10 to 20 pounds in the two weeks prior to their big day. That unto itself is not newsworthy; long before I was a kid, I imagine women (and even some men) resorted to last-minute diets in order to present their best in front of friends, family and God.

What was exceptional was that, in these cases, the method of choice consisted of consuming only 800 calories a day, delivered in the form of shakes served through a medically implanted feeding tube threaded through the woman's nose, down the esophagus

As long as there has been belly fat, there have been odd and controversial get-thin-quick schemes. Yet, this is beyond the pale.

First of all, restrict your daily intake to 800 calories and it makes no difference whether you consume carrots, cottage cheese or cognac. You'll have no choice but to drop several pounds a week. That doesn't mean it's healthy, and it belies the bigger question: What is it with this unattainable, unrealistic goal of achieving perfection? It's a fantasy state that remains forever out of reach; its pursuit generates self-loathing, frustration and, in cases like these, possible medical complications.

I'm not saying they should show up to the wedding in ratty PJ pants and bunny slippers, but if they're doing it for their husbands, be assured that any groom not overjoyed with the appearance of his bride as she comes down the aisle better not be standing next to her in front of the preacher. That marriage is doomed from the get-go, whether she's a size three or a size 16.

Beyond that, it's sad that the pressure to be perfect is so pronounced that otherwise healthy women feel such self-deficiency that they choose to live with a feeding tube shoved up their nostrils and a sack of protein-rich formula attached to their person. They are hunting for happiness that will not be found.

Ironically, if they redirected that money to themselves -- or even their honeymoons -- they would remember the results more fondly, and far longer, than whether they were a size seven or a five when they said, I do.
