10 Signs You Have A Bad Relationship With Food (And How To Fix It) – HuffPost

Every time I start to feel hopeful that the anti-diet movement is gaining traction and more people are finally starting to reject toxic diet culture, reality seems to rain on my parade.

Whether its teenage wellness influencers using TikTok to promote massively restrictive eating plans or a magazine headline touting ways to outsmart your hunger cues, the truth is that disordered eating is everywhere. What is worse, its often praised as health-conscious or virtuous.

Depriving your body of the food it wants and needs is anything but healthy. Just because weve normalized things like chewing gum to avoid eating, or religiously weighing your food and logging it into an app, doesnt mean those things are actually good for us. And while its fair to say that silly diet tricks are pushed on us all the time, its also true that many people are especially drawn to these disordered eating habits at this moment.

Peoples concerns with foods are heightened right now, said Barbara Spanjers, a Las Vegas-based therapist and wellness coach. In a way, its easier to focus on food than to focus on the existential threats that we are facing, both the virus and the dire economic situation that some people are finding themselves in.

Of course, stressing about food instead of stressing about the pandemic isnt really a healthy coping mechanism. Here are a few common signs of disordered eating to watch out for:

1. You focus on clean eating.

Do you shy away from processed foods in favor of whole or clean foods? (Been there.) Many people view that as a healthy choice, but it isnt.

For starters, it draws an arbitrary line in the sand between what you can eat and what you cant eat. Think of the way clean-eating advocates demonize things like Kit Kat bars (because sugar!) but promote chocolate bars made with organic cocoa, organic coconut sugar and organic puffed quinoa (which contain just as much sugar). Or the way they avoid fresh bread made with wheat flour and yeast but deem fresh bread made with tapioca or almond flour to be A-OK.

The truth is, clean eating is a way to restrict food without much scientific rhyme or reason. Rachel Larkey, a New York City-based registered dietitian, described it as an unhealthy obsession. Its not smart to think or eat this way.

2. You avoid all the foods you actually want when you go out to eat.

Its one thing to say no to your favorite comfort foods when youre just not hungry, but its another thing to avoid those foods altogether, said Brittany Wehrle, a Dallas-based sports dietitian and owner of Fueled & Well Nutrition.

Avoiding all fun foods when out to eat, she said, is probably a sign of disordered eating, even its applauded as healthy. If you find yourself constantly scanning the menu for the lowest-calorie options or even looking them up on the restaurants website beforehand you might need to take a step back and think about why youre doing it.

3. You refuse to eat food outside your home altogether.

Avoiding social situations where there is fear of being around certain foods, so as not to fall off a diet plan, is a sign of disordered eating, said Alissa Rumsey, a New York City-based dietitian, nutrition therapist and author of Unapologetic Eating: Make Peace With Food and Transform Your Life.

Constantly forgoing dinners out (or even takeout) because there arent healthy choices on the menu isnt healthy at all. In fact, it can leave you feeling isolated and lonely.

4. You stress out about eating something thats not part of your plan.

Someone with disordered eating who is on a road trip with friends may be completely shaken by having to eat something that isnt part of the routine or plan such as grabbing lunch from a fast-food drive-thru, Wehrle said. In contrast, someone with a healthy relationship with food can roll with the punches and not be bothered by a change of routine.

Its fine to try to eat nourishing foods, but it shouldnt feel like an emergency when you have to stray from your usual eating habits for a short period of time.

5. Youre strict about portion control.

The idea of proper portion size is a popular one, but its not really true that you should stick to the same portions at every meal.

Deciding how much to eat based on an appropriate portion or external measurement rather than listening to the bodys needs can be a sign of disordered eating, Rumsey said.

Instead of putting arbitrary limits on the amount of food you eat at a given meal or snack, just eat until youre satisfied. That might take a while to figure out if youre not used to doing it, but youll get the hang of it.

6. You think of foods as good or bad.

A healthy approach to nutrition allows for flexibility and promotes a healthy relationship with food where there are no good or bad foods, said Rebecca Ditkoff, a New York City-based dietitian, certified intuitive eating counselor and owner of Nutrition by RD. Food is not black and white and serves beyond just nourishment, and is also considered a form of self-care as well as a source of enjoyment.

While a disordered approach to eating is rigid, a healthy approach takes into account not only the physical effects of food but also the social, emotional and mental effects.

7. You have feelings of guilt around food.

Another problem with this good-or-bad thinking around food is that it leads to guilt.

This moralization of food often extends to the person doing the classifying so that they start to feel they are a good or bad, healthy or unhealthy human based on what they eat, said Nina Mills, a Melbourne, Australia-based dietitian and founder of Feel Good Eating.

That should never be your mindset. As Spanjers said, Food guilt is very mainstream but is, in my opinion, pretty disordered. Did you steal the food from a baby? No? Then theres no need to feel guilty.

8. You use exercise to earn food.

Another tell-tale sign of early [disordered eating] problems is when someone frequently refers to exercise as a way to earn or burn off food, Wehrle said.

Theres a time and place to link food and exercise like if youre fueling up for an endurance event or youre trying to time a meal and a workout so that you wont feel hungry or stuffed. It might feel especially good to work out the day after a big meal. But you should never not eat something because you didnt earn it with a workout or schedule an extra workout to burn off something you ate.

9. You give weight-based compliments.

This ones a little more general, but if youre constantly giving weight-based compliments or analyzing other peoples bodies in your head, it could be a sign of your own disordered eating.

We often think its normal to tell someone they look great and ask if theyve lost weight or to compliment someones weight loss, Larkey said.

Really, though, its inappropriate. For starters, someone might have lost weight due to an illness, depression, eating disorder a whole host of reasons, Larkey continued. Plus, these comments reinforce the idea that body size is very important and weight loss is something we should all strive for.

That preoccupation with the body above all else is usually a sign that someone is having a messed-up relationship with food, Larkey said.

10. You have designated cheat meals or days.

Um, what exactly are you cheating on by eating food that you love? The practice of being good all week and then having a cheat meal on the weekend is often a sign of disordered eating, Mills said.

Plus, this invariably always backfires, and the cheat meal or day feels excessive and reinforces this idea that certain foods need to be controlled, when the actual problem is the restriction that comes with trying to be good throughout the week, Mills explained.

In other words, all of the rules you put around food during the week leave you feeling totally out of control when the rules get lifted, and you end up feeling much worse than if youd just let yourself have what you wanted when you wanted it.

So how can you fix all of this? Heres some expert advice on how to improve your relationship with food instead of letting it become another source of stress:

Talking to a professional is the best way to work through disordered eating habits.

If youre really struggling with food, talk to a qualified therapist or registered dietitian who can help you recognize harmful behaviors and work through them.

If thats not possible for you at the moment, Mills suggested immersing yourself in podcasts, books and social media accounts that call out disordered eating habits and promote healthier ones. Podcasts like Love, Food, Food Psych and Food Heaven are great resources, as are the books Anti-Diet and The Body Is Not an Apology.

The difference between a healthy approach to food and a disordered one is flexibility.

Someone who has a healthy relationship with food can be flexible in what they eat. Mills described this as the willingness and ability to be spontaneous with food, so that it takes up some time in your day and some space in your brain but doesnt feel all-consuming.

A healthy approach to health and well-being comes when you approach nutrition from a place of self-care, rather than self-control or restriction, Rumsey added.

Bottom line: Theres nothing wrong with caring about your physical health and wanting to eat nutritious foods, but its not mentally, emotionally or physically healthy to stress about food all the time.

Getting organized usually ranks high on new years resolutions lists. But like working out and dieting, organizational systems can easily fall wayside by February. For most people, anyway. At some point during the decades of my entrepreneurial career, I realized my lifelong OCD tendencies didnt just help me organize my company. They actually made my business more profitable. Here's what I've learned along the way.

For over a decade, I ran a production company that employed dozens of full-time staff and contractors. I insisted on keeping all our digital media assets meticulously categorized using spreadsheets. Footage would be stored on our main server before we downloaded it onto external hard drives of which we had hundreds.

One day, I received an email from a past client who asked me for some footage wed shot a while back. As it happened, my team knew exactly where it was, and got it delivered to the client immediately, which opened up a new work opportunity and repeat business. Being organized literally made my company money.

Its difficult to pin an exact number to the ROI of being organized. It will depend on your company size, workflow and strategies. But the true benefits are more than just financial, and the costs for ignoring organization are significant.

Excuses for disorganization are myriad. The old joke about having a system only I understand is a bad business philosophy. In the corporate world, executives often focus on bottom-line costs this is the line Id hear most often whenever I consulted for larger agencies, as Id try and convince executives to migrate their data to a reliable content management system. They felt the upfront costs were too high and brushed off tighter organization as optional.

This is a big mistake. Organization should be mandatory. There is a simple reason for this: When workflows are organized, employees and contractors spend less time looking for files and more time doing their actual jobs.

That basic tenet stands behind one of the only studies on the cold, hard ROI of being organized. Express Employment Professionals, a staffing agency, surveyed 18,000 business leaders to learn that company-wide disorganization cost 57 percent of respondents six working hours per week. Disorganized employees can cost their company more than one-fifth their actual salary: $11,000 per year out of their $50,000 annual earnings. Elsewhere, a report by SaaS company MediaValet says employees spend eight percent of their workdays searching for files, and end up wasting time recreating between five and 15 percent of their companys digital assets after giving up the hunt.

Beyond financials, disorganization costs companies in ways that are impossible to quantify but cannot be underestimated. Poor mental health and disorganization go hand-in-hand, leading to unnecessary stress and anxiety. If an employee spends an hour searching for an old document and ends up spending another hour to recreate it, thats not just a waste of time and money its bad for morale.

In the work-from-home era, rock-solid organization can also bring colleagues closer together. Collaborative tools make it easier for remote employees and freelancers to feel like theyre sharing the same space. In the creative industry, this is essential for creative collaboration, which many worry will weaken in a remote workforce. After all, working remotely precludes those serendipitous moments that occur when you can pop into someones office and riff off an idea. Getting organized means less administrative busywork, so your team can focus more on the work they enjoy.

A strong virtual culture also helps when you are working with new team members. It means there is an established, common language into which they can integrate smoothly. Our brains are naturally driven to follow rules. Smoother collaboration means less downtime, saving you money and making your companys output more efficient.

When discussing organizational systems in 2021 and beyond, its impossible to ignore the skyrocketing popularity of cloud-based and A.I.-driven software. I mentioned earlier how my production company, once upon a time, used spreadsheets to manually track external hard drives that housed our archival storage. Two decades later, A.I. can catalog all this information in the cloud automatically, while also adding custom metadata fields and audio transcriptions.

The trajectory is obvious to industry watchers. According to a May report by Data Center Dynamics, during the first quarter of 2020, cloud spending shot up 37 percent to $29 billion over the same period in 2019. That same month, industry analyst Gartner predicted a 19 percent rise in cloud spending by the end of 2020, despite overall IT spending dropping by eight percent due to the pandemic. Indeed, despite the unsettling numbers of small businesses shutting down, worldwide spending on cloud infrastructure is on the rise.

I expect another spike to occur in mid-2021, by the time businesses begin opening up and entrepreneurs feel comfortable again taking risks with new ventures. Future-looking entrepreneurs will kickstart their new projects with a strong, cloud-based foundation.

The reasons for this are clear: it makes good business sense. It is no secret that the cloud is the future of digital organization. No one is moving in the other direction, though many companies are adopting hybrid solutions, especially to collaborate with independent entities that splinter off from larger ones. However, if cloud adoption isnt on your radar, simply creating a more efficient manual system is better than doing nothing at all.

But Id urge all entrepreneurs to look at the software available to them in their industry. Odds are good that someone has found a way to save you time, which ultimately will save you money, speed up your workflow and improve the mental health of your workforce. If thats not a strong enough ROI, nothing is.

Firstly, working out with a buddy can make exercising much more fun than it already is. On days when you feel low mood-wise, are stressed and don't really feel like exercising, call up a friend of yours and plan to do a workout together. Not only will it improve your mood, it will also motivate you to give your best in the workout.

Agrees Makhija, who says that one gets to push his/her limits when working out with a buddy. "We all know exercise is great for so many reasons. It is wonderful for weight loss and weight management, heart health and for your mental health. In 2020, I learnt that we should find an exercise buddy, and shouldnot always do alone."

She goes on to add how she has always worked out alone, thinking that it would give her "me time" and that "push" to exercise efficiently. The most effective part of working out with a buddy, as mentioned above, is that it makes exercising fun. And we all want to continue doing something that's fun for us.

Weight loss tops New Year resolution wish-list following Covid-19 impact – Leicestershire Live

More people are pledging to make New Year resolutions following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, research has revealed.

It suggested 25 per cent more than usual have promised to make the fitness vow compared to the previous year, with weight loss and extra exercise topping the list.

However, data suggests Britons are also planning to focus 2021 resolutions more on mental wellbeing (37 per cent) and saving money (36 per cent), as the global pandemic shifts priorities.

The survey, commissioned by The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan, found that more than nine million more people could be making New Years resolutions compared with last year.

A third of those polled are more likely to adopt a diet or exercise programme to lose weight in 2021, with 20 per cent confessing that Covid-19 has shown them the importance of being a healthy weight. 15 per cent also admitted their concern about the impact of future pandemics, and therefore wanting to make a change before its too late.

Women showed a particular determination to setting goals, with almost one in five revealing the Covid-19 pandemic has changed their outlook, and they are now more driven to make positive changes in their life.

Men were shown to be the most likely to put on extra weight, with 10 per cent revealing they had previously experienced a seven to eight pounds weight gain over the Christmas period alone.

Northern Ireland proved to be the most affected region across the UK during the pandemic, with 14 per cent of people putting on more than a stone since it began in March 2020 - almost three times the UK average.

"However, it is encouraging to see so many people wanting to focus on bettering their health in 2021, and that includes their mental wellbeing too.

New Year is a great time to start afresh, but its important to put a strategy in place to ensure healthy habits and a positive mindset are instilled from the get-go.

"Try to plan your meals and the times you eat each day to limit the chances of reaching for snacks, limit your sugary drink intake, and eat foods that are high in protein and fibre to help you stay fuller for longer.
