Diabetes Diet: The Myths, The Truths, And The Possibilities – CodeBlue

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:10 am

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 Understanding the frustrations that diabetes patients as well as caregivers go through in preparing suitable daily meals, the For Your Sweetheart campaign has commissioned Nik Michael Imran of 2011 Masterchef Malaysia fame to create a series of recipes, ranging from fusion to local cuisines that can be prepared in less than 20 minutes.

The recipes were developed in consultation with Poh Kai Ling in her capacity as a council member of Diabetes Malaysia (DM), as well as a former committee member of the Malaysian Diabetes Educators Society (MDES).

Debunking The Diabetes Diet Myths

It is important to understand the facts about diabetes, so that both patients and caregivers can make informed decisions about dietary requirements. Some popular myths, especially for newly diagnosed patients and caregivers, include skipping meals to manage fluctuating blood sugar levels, consuming sugar free or sugar-substituted products freely, and avoiding eating potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and corn.

Skipping meals or eating less does not help to reduce sugar intake. It is advisable to follow the hunger cues, eat when the body needs. Ignoring hunger cues tend to create craving issues, making it hard for the person to control food intake in the subsequent meals. It is also important to read food labels to understand nutrition contents better, as not all sugar-free products are carbohydrate-free, Poh said.

Potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and corn are all part of the carbohydrate food group. It is true that carbohydrate intake will increase blood sugar levels.

However, these starchy vegetables are highly nutritious, and contain various vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fibre, which are essential to our bodies. One should never avoid these foods. The key is to control the portion sizes.

So What Can Diabetes Patients Eat?

According to Poh, a diabetes-friendly diet does not need to be restrictive, boring, and hard to swallow. Having diabetes does not have to limit a persons meal choices. Healthy eating for people with diabetes is no different than for everyone else.

What is important is to eat a controlled amount and serve a portion of carbohydrate rich food. One of the ways is to take note of the Glycemic Index (GI) of the foods. GI is a value to measure the rate of how quickly carbohydrate in food raises the blood glucose. To put it simply, foods that are low GI (between 0-55) are considered good carbs and high GI (70-100) foods are considered bad carbs. The higher the GI value, the greater the effect on blood sugar levels. Understanding the GI of foods can help us in controlling diabetes along with carbohydrate counting, she said.

The collaboration between Nik Michael and Poh in developing the recipes in the Simple Healthy Cooking e-book ensured that the meals are not only enjoyable with a wide variety for different tastes, but also simple, easy to prepare, and appropriate for people with diabetes. The result is a variety of win-win recipes delicious restaurant-style meals that are also healthy and GI-appropriate.

Ive tried all 10 recipes and I must say they are really delicious. Kudos to Chef Nik! My personal favourites are Brown Pasta Alla Puttanesca, Coconut Crepes and Tenzaru Soba, said Poh.

Sharing his experience in developing the recipes for this campaign, Nik Michael said: It has been a meaningful journey for me personally. My dad, who was a chef and loves good food too, was recently diagnosed with diabetes. I understand the heart of caregivers in wanting to give the best to their loved ones who are living with diabetes.

That was what drove my inspiration in developing these ten recipes. I aim to retain amazing flavour while modifying their nutrient intake without making patients feel like they dont have a choice regarding their diet. I hope many people will give these recipes a try and enjoy some special moments with their loved ones while doing it, he added.

Research shows that one in five adults in the country is living with diabetes, a long-term chronic illness which requires prolonged caregiving and long-term management.

Unhealthy levels of glucose in the blood can lead to long and short-term health complications, particularly affecting the heart and kidney.

This is why Poh is on a quest to educate and debunk the myths, because eating right can help in reducing the risk of diabetes-related complications such as heart and kidney diseases.

The Possibilities: A Diabetes-Free Malaysia?

Malaysia currently has the highest rate of diabetes in Asia at 17.5 per cent, with over 3.5 million Malaysians living with the condition. The Diabetes Education Manual 2020 published by MDES reported that based on current trends, an estimated seven million Malaysian adults are likely to develop diabetes by 2025.

Looking at the statistics, the dream of a diabetes-free Malaysia seems far-fetched. But, it is this very trend that spurs the For Your Sweetheart campaign to keep doing what it has been doing for the past three years.

Any effort to slow down the trend is better than none. The campaign encourages all Malaysians to Think Diabetes, Think Heart, and one of the initiatives is through early detection.

In encouraging Malaysians who may be at risk of developing diabetes or have a family history of diabetes to take tests for early detection, the For Your Sweetheart campaign will be having free diabetes HbA1c screenings at participating clinics nationwide.

The free diabetes screening effort is supported by Boehringer Ingelheim, in partnership with MDES, Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (MEMS), and Persatuan Diabetes Malaysia (PDM).

Click here to register for your free screening today. the For Your Sweetheart screening campaign is ongoing until December 31, 2022. Nik Michaels recipes for the For Your Sweetheart campaign can be downloaded here.

Autoimmunity and your diet – The County Weekly News

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:10 am

Breadcrumb Trail Links

There is no escaping the importance of a good diet, especially when it comes to autoimmune diseases. There is a very strong connection between foods and inflammation and the immune system attacking self.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Whether you have MS, Hashimotos thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, or any of the autoimmune diseases there is one marked commonality: Once you strictly adopt an anti-inflammatory diet you then have traction to turn the disease around. You can not only halt progression, but you can also eliminate all the symptoms that you were experiencing.

A number of years ago, my partner became progressively more achy, more miserable and fatigued over a six-month period. However, because he had experienced several significant injuries in that period, it took a while to realize what was going on. However, when he could only crawl up the stairs and couldnt even put socks on his feet due to the swelling then it was definitely time to get tested. He had a very aggressive form of rheumatoid arthritis (despite being negative for rheumatoid factor).

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Of course, the mainstream approach is to immediately start a course of prednisone and methotrexate (a chemo drug) or a biologic (which also carries a host of side effects). Which made it a no-brainer for my partner to opt for a natural approach. One of the first steps was to get food sensitivity testing done, as well as checking for parasites (bacteria, protozoa, and more).

Very often, one of the underlying factors that triggers an autoimmune disease is an unresolved low-grade infection so these need to be identified and treated. Interestingly, in my partners case, Campylobacter was one of the organisms discovered a few years previously on a trip in the US he developed food poisoning, and clearly, he had not quite gotten rid of the causative bacteria.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

So, he went on a course of herbs to clear the bacteria and other parasites, and a diet that eliminated gluten, night-shade vegetables, soy, corn, and cow dairy. As well as sugars and other problematic foods. It took a couple of months, but he started to look and feel a lot better than before. However, everything would go sideways the moment he deviated from the diet or when he was under a lot of stress. And it would be harder and harder to get things back on track. Which was when I convinced him to change his diet to Auto-Immune Paleo and that made the biggest difference. Eliminating legumes removes a number of inflammatory proteins in particular, saponins and lectins. Surprisingly, everyones favourite non-gluten grain quinoa contains a fair amount of lectins, saponins, and other inflammatory compounds. And, to someone who is very sensitive, all of these will interfere with healing. So, the gluten grains and legumes were effectively maintaining intestinal inflammation and leaky gut.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Tied into the food-inflammation complex is the issue of a leaky gut where the cells that line your intestines become unglued with long-term cellular damage. Larger undigested molecules are then able to migrate through openings and into your circulatory system setting off inflammation throughout the body. So, no treatment is complete without repairing and healing the gut walls. And then maintaining all of those improvements.

Five years since the diagnosis, my partner has no joint pains, no swelling and no joint malformation. And, all without pharmaceutical interventions.

However, there were and are a number of supplements to take daily. These are primarily antioxidants and minerals. The most important of the antioxidants would have to be Vitamin D3. D3 modulates immune function and, in optimal amounts, plays a key role in reducing the likelihood of developing an autoimmune disease, as well as simply lowering inflammation.

Who is Chrissy Metz?

Chrissy Metz is a Florida-born singer and actress who became famous for her character as Kate Pearson on This Is Us, an NBC hit drama. Her acting career began in 2005 with minor roles in film and television, but she landed her breakout role in the regular series "This Is Us" after moving to Los Angeles in 2016. The series ran from 2016 - 2022, and the show got her a Primetime Emmy Award. She also got nominated for two Golden Globe Awards. Metz struggled with weight issues ever since she was a child, and she related to her role as Kate Pearson, who had to deal with weight issues.

Metz, also a singer, appeared in other films - Breakthrough and Unbreakable, both in 2019. She also had roles in Sierra Burgess Is a Loser and played Ima Wiggles in FX's American Horror Story: Freak Show.

Chrissy Metz's younger years

Metz was born to Mark and Denise Metz on September 29, 1980, in Homestead, Florida. Her family moved to Japan when she was six months old because her father was stationed there in the US Navy. When she turned 8, her family decided to move back to the US. Soon after, her parents divorced, and her father married another woman on the same day the divorce was finalized. In recent interviews, Metz's father disputed her claims that he abandoned them. Her father said that he and his new wife tried to reach out to Chrissy Metz several times but that she never replied.

Metz, her mother, and two siblings lived in a trailer park in Gainesville, Florida, and suffered years of poverty. Metz's mother worked at a grocery store, and money was tight. She said her mother would often skip meals so her children could eat. Metz tells how she would wander in the grocery store aisles while her siblings were in school because she didn't want to be alone.

Soon after, her mother got pregnant by someone she met at work, but he disappeared after learning of her pregnancy. Another member was added to the household. Denise eventually met Crayton Hodge, the man who would become Metz's stepfather. Metz said she suffered years of abuse while living with her stepfather. (He later disputed this in media interviews, saying he never controlled her and she was free to eat whatever she wanted- a statement that Metz rebutted in a book she published in 2018.

Metz was initiated into the working force when she got her first job at McDonald's in Gainesville because she needed to buy a $120 pair of shoes which her mother couldn't afford. She learned the value of hard work at a young age.

Personal life

Metz met British journalist, screenwriter, and copywriter Martyn Eaden in 2006 on an internet dating site. They started emailing each other for months. Eaden visited and continued to see her in the US. Eventually, they married on January 5, 2008, in California. The relationship deteriorated quickly over the years, each busy focusing on their careers. Metz started going to Overeating Anonymous as Eaden went on hikes with a female co-worker. Eaden filed for divorce from Metz in 2014, with "irreconcilable differences" as the cause. Their divorce was finalized in 2015.

Weight struggles

In various interviews with different publications, TV appearances, in her journal, and in her book published in 2018, "This is Me: Loving the Person You Are Today," Chrissy Metz publicly shared her struggles with weight problems since childhood. She was never happy and had constantly been bullied since elementary school. She also said her mother had difficulty buying a dress because she had always been chubby as a child, and her mother couldn't find her fit.

Metz said she was 11 years old and joined Weight Watchers as the youngest person in the program, a time she considered very awkward.

She was open about her abusive stepfather, who always harshly pushed her to lose weight, constantly joked about her body, stared at her when she was eating, and joked about putting a lock on the refrigerator. She tells how he would slam the weighing scale in the kitchen and tells her to "get on the damn thing." She said that her stepfather, whom she calls "Trigger," accepted all her siblings except her.

Metz recalls that her friends could eat whatever they wanted when she was still studying. Meanwhile, she had to watch what she ate because she would gain weight fast.

Turning Point

When Metz starred in American Horror Story: Freak Show, she had to wear a fat suit which became an eye opener for her. She realized she didn't want the thought of "becoming too heavy and can't walk and get stuck in the doorframe."

Metz's insecurities about her weight led to an eating disorder that affected her weight. She weighed over 300 pounds and had health issues. She felt miserable. On her 30th birthday in 2010, Metz suffered from depression and was rushed to the hospital due to a panic attack. That incident became the turning point in her life. Her father, Mark, was also a big man and underwent four bypass operations. She decided she didn't want the same thing to happen to her.

How did Chrissy Metz lose weight?

Metz's weight loss journey in real life was an open book, just like the character of Kate Pearson she played in This Is Us. Metz said she could understand and relate to her character in the show so well because they had the same struggles to lose weight. Her weight loss journey was long and challenging, and she had to make drastic efforts and lifestyle changes to shed over 100 pounds in five months.

Metz said her secret to losing weight was eating a 2,000-calorie diet and walking 20 minutes daily. She stressed the importance of balancing her diet- consuming fewer calories, cutting off unhealthy foods, and moving around even for short periods throughout the day. She said that people tend to eat more calorie-rich, processed foods than whole foods, and eating more calories in a day than you need or burn off will make you gain weight.

Metz focused on the quality and quantity of the food she ate. She had to calculate the calories based onbasal metabolic rate, which means you have to find your calorie needs, and eat only what your body needs and how much. She cut off unhealthy food from her diet and tried to eat a balanced diet and healthy snacks.

After Metz was hospitalized for a panic attack on her 30th birthday, she decided to change her lifestyle toward a healthy routine. She contacted a nutritionist who helped her figure out what and how many calories she needed each day to reach her goal weight.

It was not an easy feat for Metz. As she progressed in her weight loss journey, she stopped focusing on the numbers on the scale and turned to having a positive mindset. She wanted a healthy, fit body for herself, not limited by anything. The journey is painful, and she said there were days when she just wanted to give up, but the goal of shedding off those pounds kept her going.

Metz's incredible transformation amazed everyone and became the talk of the entertainment industry. Her success hogged the spotlight. After losing over a hundred pounds, Metz said people kept asking if she had undergone any weight loss surgery. She never did any surgery but stuck to her diet and exercise routine.

How to Reverse Liver Damage Quickly, Say Experts Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:09 am

Liver damage can be seriousbut along with medical supervision, there are ways to help your liver heal. "Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease [NASH] is the most common cause of liver disease in the United States, and is estimated to affect up to a quarter of adults in the world," says Irun Bhan, MD. "It is defined by excess fat accumulating in the liver and usually occurs in people with obesity, high blood sugars (diabetes), abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels, or high blood pressure. These disorders often run together and as a group are called metabolic syndrome." Here is how to reverse liver damage quicklyaccording to experts. Read onand to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had COVID.

Studies show that losing even a small amount of weight can significantly impact liver health. "For people who are overweight or have obesity, the best treatment for NASH is weight loss," says Dr. Bhan. "A landmark study showed that losing 10% of one's body weight can reduce liver fat, resolve inflammation, and potentially improve scarring."

Regular exercise is a great way to help improve liver health. "As a transplant hepatologist and exercise researcher, I am often asked by my patients with chronic liver disease whether or not they should exercise. My answer is always a resounding 'YES!' and sometimes accompanied with a little fist bump they may or may not notice," says Jonathan Stine, MD MSc, FACP. "Exercise or really any physical activity has many well-known benefits for the liver."

"We recommend patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease drink three cups of coffee per day, eat four tablespoons of olive oil a day and follow a Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes eating primarily plant-based foods and healthy fats," says Annie Guinane, RD, LDN, CNSC. "Adapting to a Mediterranean diet is hard for patients because we are surrounded by convenience foods and junk on a daily basis. This diet is focused. It is important for patients to be able to sit down and learn about the benefits of the recommended diet and ask questions. Then they can set realistic and attainable goals with a nutrition expert, rather than something that sets them up to fail."6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

Research shows intermittent fasting could have a positive effect on liver health. "We know that fasting can be an effective intervention to treat disease and improve liver health. But we haven't known how fasting reprograms liver proteins, which perform a diverse array of essential metabolic functions," says Mark Larance, PhD, a Cancer Institute of NSW Future Research Fellow in the Charles Perkins Centre and School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney. "For the first time we showed that HNF4-(alpha) is inhibited during intermittent fasting. This has downstream consequences, such as lowering the abundance of blood proteins in inflammation or affecting bile synthesis. This helps explain some of the previously known facts about intermittent fasting."

Cutting down on sugar intake can make a difference in how fast the liver heals. "Many people eating a common American diet are developing extensive hepatic fibrosis, or scarring of their liver, which can reduce its capacity to function, and sometimes lead to cancer," says Donald Jump, a professor in the OSU College of Public Health and Human Sciences. "There's a lot of interest in finding ways to help the liver recover from this damage, but this research suggests that diets lower in fat and cholesterol, even if they help you lose weight, are not enough," Jump said. "For more significant liver recovery, the intake of sugar has to come down, probably along with other improvements in diet and exercise."

Walking Helps Lose Weight, Stay Healthy, and Stay Sober – Prevention Magazine

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:09 am

Today, I run 100 mile racesbut I didnt used to be this way. About five years ago I started a simple walking journey that completely changed my life. I used to weigh 446 lbs and I began walking with the goal of losing weight, and I have since lost over 200 lbs. Eventually my walking journey led to running, but I have walking to thank for so many amazing changes in my life.

Feeling inspired to start walking? Register for our free virtual 5K walk on Saturday, October 1, 2022, and become a part of a community of thousands of walkers! Sign up here. Have your own walking story? Wed love to hear it! Tell us here for a chance to win a Nathan gift card.

Before and After

It began with bending down to tie my shoes. I remember one day specifically when I noticed how difficult this simple task had become: I would have to hold my breath because I was so big. I decided I couldnt do it anymoreI had to make a change. And it was unbelievable how quickly daily walks helped me feel better. With every walk I could feel the difference and the progress almost instantaneously, and sure enough, one week Id only be able to walk under a half mile, but the next week Id complete that half mile, and the next week I could reach a full mile. It was very satisfying to be able to see such a big change in such a short period of time, and I became hooked.

My favorite thing about walking is that it helps me to clear my mind while Im out thereIm really an outdoors person, so its great to have time outdoors on foot strolling around and seeing new things. Its definitely not just a weight-loss thing for meits almost like a form of counseling, just a very relaxing, all-around healthy habit.

Its really amazing to now be able to walk with my son and my wife because it was something that when I was really big, I couldnt do. Now that I can go for these walks, I just want to walk all the time! When I was big, my heels would hurt and I couldnt really go too far. So when I was able to walk it became really exciting. Something so simple that most people dont think about became so important. It almost became addicting, to be able to do simple things like walking.

When I walk with my family we like to stroll through various parks and trails, and its great to be able to talk about what we see around us and about our days. We can chat about whats on our minds and how school is going, and really just everything you usually dont discuss when sitting around inside the house because the television or the phone is distracting you. I also enjoy taking solo walks either on the beach or in the city. I could easily walk for hours through the city streets because there's so many different things to see, and each time you take a different route, you'll see something new that you normally wouldn't see if you were driving.

Overall, its just very satisfying to be able to change for the better, and walking helped with so many things in my life aside from my mental and physical health, and my relationship with my family. Walking also helped me to stop drinking. It just completely changed my life. There was one walk I had with my wife when I was on my journey to becoming sober and it really helped to put things in perspective and keep me motivated to be the person I know I can be. If it wasnt for these walks that had become such an integral part of my routine, that likely wouldnt have been a conversation.

When I have days where I struggle with staying motivated, I just remember where I came from and that always reminds me to keep active even when I dont want to. Staying engaged on social media helps a lot too, because it makes me feel so great to know that I can help inspire others to change for the better just like I have.

It's crazy how one simple thing like walking can change the outcome of something so big. My advice to others would simply be to just not over-complicate it: Dont worry about how far youre going or for how long, just go outside and enjoy whatever youre able to do. You never know what walking can do for you. Its amazing where it got me: I lost 200 pounds, got sober, and improved my relationship with my family.

Walking is easily taken for granted, but it can change big things in your life.

Bake Off’s Matt Lucas shares heartbreaking health reason he had to lose weight – Daily Star

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:09 am

Great British Bake Off host Matt Lucas has shared his heart-breaking health feats that led to him having to lose weight.

Viewers of the Channel 4 baking show are concerned for the star after seeing how much weight he has shed in recent months - but there is a reason behind his drastic lifestyle overhaul.

The former Little Britain comedian has gone from a size XXXL to a size medium - by changing two things in his life.

READ NEXT: Bake Off judge Prue Leith left 28 people in 'critical care' after massive food error

Matt simply ate less and walked more, and was able to shed the pounds in order to turn his life and health around.

The reasoning behind his lifestyle overhaul was because he was afraid that he would suffer the same fate as some of his family members.

Both his dad and grandad sadly died young from heart attacks in their fifties, which is why the star, 48, wanted to ensure his health was in tip-top condition in order to sustain him through his life.

"My dad died when he was 52, very suddenly. His dad died, I think at 56, so I was looking at the law of averages," he revealed.

"I was very big and I was getting bigger in the pandemic. Sort of not being very active, not really going out, not seeing people, just eating a lot. I was so big I couldnt really fit on screen any more."

Speaking on the Mid Point podcast, he said: "Ive still got a proper tummy, Im not skinny by any means. Ive just lost some weight. Ive gone from maybe a double XXL, sometimes triple XXXL, down to a medium.

"I do feel a bit better, I feel a bit relieved. Because the thing is, I dont do any drugs and I dont smoke and I hardly ever drink. So its just the food really.

"I just dont eat as much, but I eat sweets still. I like to walk. I live not far from a canal and I love when the weathers nice going for long walks there."

When fans saw Matt on-screen for GBBO earlier this months, they flooded Twitter with reactions.

One person said: "Holy heck at the weight loss of @RealMattLucas - he looks really well."

While other people seemed concerned, with someone saying: "Woah, I don't know whether to be happy for Matt Lucas at his weight loss or worried..."

Lifting Techniques: How to Move Heavy Things – Healthline

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:08 am

Lifting heavy items should be done carefully in order to prevent injury.

In fact, 38.5% of work-related musculoskeletal issues are related to back injury, with improper lifting being one of the main causes.

Therefore, its important to learn proper lifting techniques to keep yourself safe at work and at home.

This article discusses proper lifting techniques and common lifting problems, and provides useful tips.

The best lifting technique is to squat down and use the strength of your legs instead of your back to lift the object off of the ground.

That said, you should only lift items that youre comfortable lifting. If youre unsure, its best to ask another person for help or use other machinery (e.g., a lift).

If youve decided that its safe to lift the item by yourself, youll want to follow the proper lifting technique guidelines outlined by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Before moving something heavy, its important to think and plan first.

First, look at the item that youre about to lift and ask yourself these questions:

Taking note of your environment, the item you plan to lift, and other considerations can help you decide if this item is a one- or two-person job or requires other assistance, such as machinery.

Just like youd warm up before a workout, you should also warm up and stretch your muscles before lifting.

Ideally, spend a few minutes doing some dynamic stretching (e.g., lunges, lower back rotations, arm circles) to prepare your muscles and get your blood flowing.

To lift safely, you first want to make sure that youre in the right positioning.

Youll also want to make sure that you bend your knees, squat down to grab the item, and use the strength of your legs to do most of the lifting. This can help to lower back and other muscular injury.

Here are the steps to safely lift a heavy item:

If needed, slowly take small steps to walk to the spot you plan to put the item. If its far, you should consider placing the item on a cart or other form of transportation.

If you need to change directions, lead with your hips and ensure your shoulders stay aligned with your hips. Continue to keep the load as close to your body as possible.

Setting an item down is the same movement as lifting but in reverse:

If the item will be placed above the ground (e.g., on a counter or table), walk up to the surface and place it gently on top. If its slightly lower than hip level, be sure to still bend your knees and lower your body to place the item down safely.

While no one intends to hurt themselves, its quite common to injure yourself while lifting heavy objects. The most common lifting problems include:

By lifting properly and avoiding these common lifting problems, you can help lower your risk of injury.

To prevent injury, consider these helpful tips:

To ensure your safety, always practice safe lifting techniques.

The best lifting techniques involve using your legs to lift heavy objects instead of your back, since your legs are some of your strongest muscles while your back is more susceptible to injury.

Youll also want to make sure that youre planning ahead, only lifting objects you feel comfortable lifting by yourself, and being just as mindful when you place the item down as when you lift it.

And remember, you should always ask for assistance if you have any concerns. Its better to be safe than to risk injuring yourself.

Maintenance and Weight Loss Calorie Calculator Forbes Health – Forbes

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:08 am

The Forbes Health Calorie Calculator estimates the number of calories your body uses each day. If you want to lose weight, it calculates the number of daily calories you need to consume to achieve your weight loss goal. It also displays how long it will take you to reach your goal weight safely.

To Maintain Your WeightTo calculate your daily calorie needs to maintain your weight, the calculator considers your:

Each of these components requires a different amount of calories.

1. Your RMR requires the most energy, far more than physical activity or food processing. It can be measured scientifically in a lab or estimated using an equation. In this calculator, your RMR is measured using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. Its the most reliable formula, according to a review of studies in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. It calculates your RMR based on your sex, weight, height and age.

2. Physical activity burns calories, so athletes need to consume more calories than people who dont exercise. An activity factorranging from 1.2 for people who are sedentary to 1.9 for extremely active peopleis assigned based on your physical activity level. The calculator then multiplies your RMR by this number.

3. The thermogenic effect of food makes up the remainder of your daily energy needs (approximately 10%). To find this number, the calculator takes your RMR multiplied by your activity factor and multiplies that number by 10%.

To Lose WeightTo determine your daily calorie needs to lose weight, the calculator decreases the number of calories you use each day by 25%, resulting in a new recommended daily calorie intake. Our Forbes Health Calorie Calculator panel of experts recommended this equation for safe, sustainable weight loss.

The calculator wont display fewer than 1,200 calories a day no matter your starting weight. If you go below that, its very difficult to get all the macronutrients and micronutrients you need for optimal health, says Melina Jampolis, M.D., a Forbes Health Advisory Board member.

The Forbes Health editorial team consulted 2021 Forbes Health Advisory Board members Melina Jampolis, M.D., Toby Amidor, R.D. and Sabrena Jo, M.S., the senior director of science and research at the American Council on Exercise (ACE), for this calculator. They reviewed the methods used by this tool to calculate daily calorie needs to maintain and lose weight.
