Atlantas bizarre sports moments: Wheres the coach? On TV calling the pigs – Atlanta Journal Constitution

Posted: May 14, 2020 at 9:43 pm

Editors note: At a time when sports are shut down, we take a look (in no particular order) at some of the bizarre moments from Georgia sports history.

It was a season for the ages.

The Falcons 2007 season was the low point for the franchise during owner Arthur Blanks tenure.

Things got so bad that the head coach walked out the door with three games remaning in the season.

Listen, I havent heard from Bobby since then, retired Falcons wide receiver Roddy White said this week. I have yet to hear one thing from Bobby since he left up out of the facility.

Petrino bolted during the early evening Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, the players off day.

The Falcons had just been pummeled 34-14 by the Saints on Monday Night Football. Earlier that Monday, quarterback Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in federal prison in Richmond in a dogfighting case.

More would go wrong the next day.

MORE:Atlantas bizarre moments in sports

Petrino told Blank twice that he planned to stay. Instead he escaped. He left the team, coaching staff and city in the lurch. He was next seen on television as Arkansas' new head coach in a late-night news conference in Fayetteville, Ark., later that Tuesday night. He even did the school's "Woo Pig Sooey" chant complete with cheerleaders after his opening remarks.

Petrino said he stayed up all night Monday after the Falcons loss talking with his wife. I knew I wanted to come back to coach college, Petrino said at the time. It wasn't a change in mind; it was a matter of working out details.

Blank signed Petrino to a five-year, $24.5 million contract Jan. 8 that year after dumping Jim Mora.

Petrino left the players a typewritten Dear John letter announcing his departure. Safety Lawyer Milloy wrote Coward over his name with a red marker. The players were irate.

Tight end Alge Crumpler blasted Petrino. Even the mild-mannered Warrick Dunn laid into the departed coach. Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer called Petrino a coward for the leaving the coaches and their families in limbo.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution Falcons beat writer Steve Wyche confirmed with a team official, who declined to be quoted by name, that Petrino was in fact quitting his job with the Falcons to accept the job at the University of Arkansas.

In later years, it was reported that Blank and Dallas owner Jerry Jones had a frosty relationship. It may have started with Petrinos departure. Jones, who played at Arkansas, had a hand in luring Petrino away.

In 25 seasons as an NFL player, Falcons kicker Morten Andersen thought he had seen just about everything.

The amount of things, the misfortune that has happened to us and affected the football team andorganization, has been unprecedented," Andersen said after Petrino left.

The players went into survival mode.

It's too much for the players to worry about, Dunn said back then. Just try to play good football and go out and not get embarrassed.

Morale in the organization was at a new low in a season rife with scandal.

Everybody is questioning everything, Dunn said. There's a lot of uncertainty from top to bottom. Its not just the players; its management, too.

Dunn would later become a part-owner of the franchise.

I cant think of another sports franchise that has gone through what weve gone through this year, Andersen said. Losing our franchise quarterback. Then having the issues with the head coach. Other personnel issues along the way ... it's been very challenging, for sure.

Defensive backs coach Emmitt Thomas was named the interim coach for the final three games (two of them Falcons losses) as the Falcons finished 4-12.

We're going to make the best out of it, Thomas said.

Even the opponents felt sorry for the Falcons.

My hat goes off to those guys, Tampa Bay wide receiver Mike Clayton said. They've had to endure a lot of stuff, and players should not be put in that position.

The only good thing to come out of the 2007 debacle was the development of White, who was coached by wide receivers coach Paul Petrino, Bobbys brother.

My very first two years playing for the Falcons was a lot of pressure, White said. Going into that year, it was just a different feel. When I sat down and talked to Bobby and Paul, they wanted me to be the man. They wanted me to be the guy. So, I already knew going into the season, they wanted me to be the guy.

Petrino planned to center the offense around White and Vick.

It was a lot of things they asked of me, White said. They wanted me to lose weight. They wanted me to come in in better shape. I worked extremely hard that offseason. I think I weighed in at 205. Prior to that, I was like 215. So, I had lost 10 pounds going into that year. I was just much more quicker, faster and explosive.

White, who was a first-round pick in 2005 out of Alabama-Birmingham, had talent. Paul Petrino pulled it out of him.

I had fun, White said. Being with Coach P was fun. Bobby was cool, too, through all that mess and all that nonsense. Having to deal with the Mike Vick incident and going through that offseason, it was kind of crazy, but at the same time I felt like even though we didnt know what Mike was going to do, I felt like offensively we were going to be pretty good because of the play-calling and the way we were going to practice and stuff like that.

There have long been whispers around Flowery Branch that Vick looked spectacular in secret workouts that were allegedly voluntary at the time. White confirmed those reports.

Absolutely, when we were going through meetings and stuff like that, Mike was picking up the offense so fast, White said. In that offense, you had so many different checks, out of two-by-two and three-by-one sets, that we could check to that were colors that were actually plays.

Vick was looking forward to playing for Petrino.

Mike was like really grasping that joint and just checking down, White said. We would just go, two-minute drills and stuff like that, blue, green, black, different colors for different plays and he was looking really, really good.

Everything was looking smooth. The ball was coming out of his hand quickly.

But with the federal dogfighting case hanging over his head, the public and the media never got to see Vick in Petrinos offense.

He was getting the ball out quickly, White said. We had better quick-game stuff than we did from the old regime and a lot more play-action pass. A lot more max protection. Our offense was looking really, really good man up until that point.

It was difficult on Petrino and the team once Vicks case went sideways.

It was tough for us, White said. We always thought he was coming back. We thought this thing was going to blow over and by (exhibition) season that he would be back. Thats how we kind of took it.

Once it became clear that Vick was in deep trouble, it was too late.

The biggest blow was when we knew he wasnt coming back, we didnt know how we were going to look offensively, White said. We had literally over OTAs and everything, put in everything as if Mike was the quarterback. All of the play calls and stuff like that.

We had to go back and change a lot of that stuff when we started with Joey (Harrington) and Chris Redman and them competing for the spot because they were different kind of guys. We literally had to go back and revamp the whole system. It was a big change.

White had 63 catches going into that Monday night game. He would finish with 83 catches for 1,202 yards and six touchdowns in his breakthrough season.

The craziest part about that is that when he left, it was in the middle of the night, White said. When I woke up, I had five missed calls early in the morning from Paul. I got up and answered the phone and he was like, Hey Roddy, Bobby quit. And I was like, Man, what are you talking about? He said, Yeah, man. He just quit.

White wanted to know if Paul Petrino was staying. Paul Petrino said he wanted to stay, but went with his brother to Arkansas. He did stay in touch with White for the rest of the season.

He called every week to make sure White had the game plan down and was ready to play.

I appreciated and loved Paul for that, White said. Even to this day we still stay in contact with each other. I appreciate him for even reaching out to me the rest of that season and for being a real man and being in the meeting. He didnt have to do that.

As far as Bobby Petrino, White isnt exactly waiting for a call.

Petrinos bumpy football ride is not over. He was named the head coach at Division II Missouri State in January. During stops at Arkansas, Western Kentucky and Louisville, Petrino has posted a 119-56 record over 14 seasons.

After leaving the Falcons, Petrino had the Razorbacks rolling until he was injured in a motorcycle accident that revealed an extramarital affair with an athletic department employee. Petrino originally said he was alone, but it was later discovered that he had a female passenger and they were involved in a relationship.

After he was fired by Arkansas, he was off a year before resurfacing at Western Kentucky.

He went back to Louisville in 2014 for a second stint.

He was fired a year after quarterback Lamar Jackson, running some of the plays that were designed for Vick, won the 2016 Heisman Trophy. In addition to becoming the school's first Heisman winner, Jackson and Petrino had the program as high as No. 3 in The Associated Press Top 25 poll and within reach of the college football playoffs.

A freefall the following season led to his dismissal.

Petrino did not return an email or phone call to his Missouri State office for this article.

New gene therapy cuts fat and builds muscle with ease. But theres a catch – Digital Trends

Posted: May 14, 2020 at 9:43 pm

Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have demonstrated a new gene therapy that builds strength and muscle mass quickly while preventing obesity even when the recipient is eating a high-fat diet. This isnt some crazy new bodybuilding tool, though, but rather something that could be used as a physical therapy aid for people with muscle-weakening arthritis or those suffering from osteoarthritis-related joint pain.

We know that obesity and joint injury are the primary risk factors for osteoarthritis, Farshid Guilak, professor of orthopedic surgery and director of research at Shriners Hospitals for Children in St. Louis, told Digital Trends. However, in cases of severe obesity or muscle loss, it is extremely difficult if not impossible to lose weight or improve muscle strength through normal exercise and diet. The goal of this study was to show the importance of muscle strength in overriding many of the harmful effects of obesity on the joint.

So far, the gene therapy approach has only been demonstrated in mice. The researchers delivered the gene for a molecule called follistatin to the muscle of eight-week-old mice, via injection. The protein blocks myostatin, a molecule normally responsible for stopping muscle growth. The mice in the experiment gained around twice their normal muscle mass and were able to completely burn off all the extra energy from an unhealthy high-fat diet. This prevented almost all the metabolic complications of obesity, such as systemic inflammation and high blood sugar, while also reducing arthritis and pain significantly.

The researchers worried that the gene therapy could potentially have a negative effect on the mices hearts. However, these fears proved unfounded and heart function in the mice actually improved, along with overall cardiovascular health.

These first studies in mice have shown that the procedure has excellent efficacy and safety, Guilak said. The next steps will be to do longer-term studies in mice and possibly larger animals to ensure safety of this procedure.

Guilak said that, should these steps prove successful, the researchers would consider testing the approach in humans with the initial trials in those with severe, possibly life-threatening diseases of the muscles, such as muscular dystrophy.

A paper describing the work was recently published in the journal Science Advances.

What – it turns out – is actually wrong with me – Durango Telegraph

Posted: May 14, 2020 at 9:42 pm

The question left unanswered for most of my life has been, What is wrong with you? often with an expletive in the middle. (Which is the underlying message in all its thuggish cousins, Thats a dumb idea, youre stupid, youre worthless, etc. etc.) At first, I thought there was nothing wrong with me. I was very young, I am looking up at a glowering adult, showering profanity, anger and spittle upon a defenseless child. Wrong with me? More likely, I thought, theres something wrong with you. But as the grownups, and not-so grownups, and other authority figures usually red faced and highly agitated kept yelling it at me, my self esteem began to erode. I decided maybe there was something wrong with me. Now, a lifetime later, I think Im getting a handle on it. No wonder I turned out this way. Just yesterday I saw an ad for a health club that warned should I not join, I would never recapture my awesome. So thats why I havent been feeling well, my awesome is low? Could that have contributed to my lifelong problem? I would love to recapture even part of my awesome. Trouble is, the health club is in Miami. Im in Colorado. Maybe worldwide advertising needs to tweak their own awesome. Nevertheless, it got me thinking. How long has it been since I had good awesome? Could I overdo it and recapture too much awesome? Or is it like testosterone replacement? A lot of glowing promises but not much difference in performance. Obviously, I needed answers.

My well-meaning friend, when asked the burning question of awesome, told me solemnly, John, you need to own your truth. She had to be kidding. I can barely afford to rent my truth, and even then, only an efficiency truth. Sky-rocketing prices in the truth market have driven owning your truth out of the range of most people. I think this may be one of the problems in todays society. Too few people own their own truth. Most are renting their truth and slipping further and further into debt. Owing a fortune on truth has become commonplace. So has substandard truth or no truth at all. This is no joke.

It is a sad commentary on our times. Truth seems out of reach for most people. The greater question is, why do those who clearly can afford a huge truth, a truth with an entrance hall and a grand staircase, who, if they wanted, could afford a whole bunch of truths, why do these people seem the least likely to own any truth at all?

I asked my other friend, (yes, just two). He said, John, you need to control your own narrative.

Narrative used to be a pretentious way of saying story or a less pretentious way of saying recounting of continuous events. Now Im not sure what it means. Perhaps this is more evidence of what is wrong with me, I dont speak the language. How do fatalists control their narrative? Is it just an illusion of control, the outcome having actually been pre-destined? What about free will? Is every turn in our narrative meaningful to the final outcome? Are we frighteningly responsible for our own actions? Does the free will narrative more favor Descartes or Kant? What if I throw narrative control under the figurative bus? Is that what happened to The Godfather Part III? Im getting a headache here.

So what is wrong with me? Damned if I know. Maybe its a translation problem. Maybe recapture your awesome is newspeak for self-esteem. Maybe own your truth is self-help for recognize and be responsible for your own actions. Maybe control yournarrative is dumbing down-speak for life is the result of decisions you make. Act on your life; dont react to others view of it. Is this their meaning? Then why dont they just say so?

I was yelled at a lot growing up, too much. But I also learned important lessons from kind, concerned adults. Dont hurt others, dont be selfish, dont judge. Tell the truth, be responsible, help out. You are a good and worthy person. Give to others, give time, money, attention, love. My mother would say, I love you, John, but sometimes I dont love the things that you do. The lesson there is profound. It is not, What is wrong with you? it is, Why did you do that? So why cant people say this instead of jumping on the next buzz word to come down the linguistic pike? The lessons instilled in me have worked for centuries. Dressing them up in some gibberish de jour seems to be the fashion. Is it working? Does society seem more or less honorable, respectful, responsible than it did a generation or two ago? People want to sound current, they want to sound woke. (Yech.) But lost in translation is not just a phrase.

The next time I am asked, What is wrong with you? I have the answer. Ive often wondered the same thing and here is my conclusion. Though damaging a childs self-esteem is easy and can last a lifetime, it need not be a permanent scar. There are many ways to repair and rebuild your self-esteem. The tools are embedded in our society. Theyre in schools, in houses of worship. Theyre in service organizations and in therapy. Use them. Try to find people who understand them and know how to use them. Avoid those whose own self-esteem is wrecked and who find solace only in trying to destroy others. We are all damaged to some extent, but it is not a permanent condition. We can all be healed. But you have to do it. It is your responsibility, like all the decisions you make.

And if that doesnt work, Ill say, I am owning the truth of my own awesome narrative. If that dont shut em up, nothing will.

Weight loss: How to lose weight fast with the cabbage soup diet – Express

Posted: May 14, 2020 at 9:41 pm

The cabbage soup diet has been around for many years and is still popular today. Dieters following this diet can expect to see results in just seven days, but is it a healthy diet to follow?

As the name of the diet implies, it involves eating large quantities of cabbage soup.

The diet promises slimmers to help lose up to ten pounds in a single week.

It is generally considered a quick fix diet for short-term weight loss as it requires minimal effort and has proved to be effective.

This diet is likely to cause weight loss in a short amount of time because it severely reduces your calorie intake. To lose weight, your daily calorie intake needs to be in a deficit, meaning you are burning more calories than you are consuming.

For one week, you eat homemade cabbage soup. Each day, you can also have one to two other foods, such as skimmed milk, fruit or vegetables.

This diet is perfect to jump start weight loss or to shed a few pounds for a specific occasion or event.

The cabbage soup diet is also known by other names like the Mayo Clinic Diet, because it was developed in a hospital for quick weight loss before surgery for heart patients.

It is recommended to prepare large batches of the soup at the beginning of the week for the entire week.

Ingredients: 2 large onions 2 green peppers 2 cans of tomatoes 1 bunch of celery 1 head of cabbage 3 carrots 1 pack of mushrooms 1-2 stock cubes (optional) 6-8 cups of water

Recipe: Chop all the vegetables into cubes In a large stock pot, add the onions and a small amount of oil Then add the remaining vegetables and cover with water and add stock cubes Bring to a boil, then reduce to medium heat. Let simmer until all vegetables are tender for about 30-45 minutes

Healthline recommends only sticking to the diet for around a week at a time.

You may repeat this diet if you wish to as long as you wait at least two weeks before starting it.

A positive of the diet is that you are not forced to go hungry, as you may eat as many other of the allowed foods as you want each day.

Here is a basic diet plan to follow.

The basic plan

Day 1 - Unlimited cabbage soup and fruit, but no bananas Day 2 - Only soup and vegetables. Focus on raw or cooked ready greens. Avoid peas, corn and beans. You may also have one baked potato with butter or oil Day 3 - As many fruits and vegetables as you can eat, in addition to the soup. However, no baked potato and no bananas Day 4 - Unlimited bananas, skimmed milk and cabbage soup Day 5 - You are allowed 10-20 ounces of beef, which you may substitute for chicken or fish. You may also have up to six fresh tomatoes. Drink at least six to eight glasses of water Day 6 - Soup, beef and vegetables. You may substitute the beef for grilled fish if you did not do so the day prior. Focus on leafy greens. No baked potato Day 7 - You may have vegetables, brown rice and unlimited fruit juice - but no added sugar

Mayo Clinic dietitian, Katherine Zeratsky said: You may feel weak or tired while on the diet. And once you stop the diet, its easy to regain any weight that you lost.

Fad diets like this one may be tempting, but keep in mind that long-term weight loss depends on making lasting healthy changes in your eating and exercise habits.

It is advised for long-term weight loss to opt for a healthy lifestyle change which involves exercise to keep the pounds off.

Matcha green tea powder: The Sirtfood superfood behind Adeles 7st weight loss – Express

Posted: May 14, 2020 at 9:41 pm

Adele wowed her fans as she revealed her shocking seven stone weight loss with a photo on her Instagram account in recent weeks - but could matcha green tea powder be one of the singers diet secrets? The 32-year-old star apparently shed the pounds using the Sirtfood diet, which involves a strict list of foods that dieters have to stick to. Matcha green tea is one of the hot drinks that the diet plan entails - but what is it and how does it work?

Matcha green tea comes from the same plant as green tea, but it has even more health benefits.

Its grown in a different way to standard green tea and is far less processed; the leaves are never heated and are kept in the shade to preserve the nutrients.

Keeping the leaves under cover increases chlorophyll production, giving the plant a deeper green hue and boosting its health benefits.

The leaves are then ground up into a fine powder, known as matcha, which is what is used to make matcha green tea.

READ MORE:Adele weight loss: Singer used diet plan and exercise to shed 7st

Green tea has long been hailed for its weight loss benefits, and its often included in diet plans as studies have previously linked it to increased fat-burning, particularly during exercise.

Its also thought that the superfood can help to suppress your appetite so that you naturally eat less.

Replacing your coffee with a matcha green tea could help to increase your metabolism, as well as giving a more long-lasting energy boost instead of the dreaded caffeine crash.

The super powder contains a third less caffeine than a regular black coffee with just 35mg per teaspoon.

Making a cup of matcha is a little different to your usual brew, and youll need a whisk if youre making it the traditional way.

Boil the water first and pour it into your cup, then after a few minutes stir in the matcha powder with a small whisk.

It can be served with or without milk to help soften the grassy flavour, and some brands sell it in teabags for a quicker way to make it.

The bright green powder can also be added to smoothies and juices, and is a key ingredient in the Sirtfood green juice recipe thats essential for the weight loss plan.

How to lose weight in the last 2 weeks of Ramadan – Gulf News

Posted: May 14, 2020 at 9:41 pm

Dubai: Being cooped up at home for weeks now means that health and diet are arguably more important than ever. That extra time spent at home means lack of movement and easy access to constant snacking post-iftar. The first two weeks of Ramadan have now gone by and our bodies should have adjusted to this new way of eating. But sometimes, even then the weight wont shed too easily.

And you aren't the only one

I have a healthy iftar every night, I dont overeat and I decreased my carb intake since the start of Ramadan, but I cant stop snacking throughout the day. That is the challenge for me Nermine Mansour told Gulf News.

"I have actually cut out sugar completley during this month, but it has been a struggle to lose the weight," said Dina Azzmi.

"It is so hard for me to resist having something sweet after iftar. My body has never craved anything more. I feel like it's caused by a dip in sugar levels. That explains why sweets are so popular during Ramadan," said Kareem Hussain.

To keep your body healthy during Ramadan, you need to stay active, drink enough water and eat the right food, especially during pandemic self-isolation.

Gulf News speaks to UAE Team Emirates nutritionist, Gorka Prieto and Olga Donica, the Resident Dietician and Expert in Lifescience-Nutrition at Clinique La Prairie in Switzerland on how to maintain a healthy diet.

Working on your immunity, helps you lose excess weight

Gorka: Maximising your supply of vitamins and minerals by eating 3-4 servings of fruit and 2 servings of vegetables at ifar will support your immune system, provide the fibre you need for the proper functioning of your intestine and increase hydration. By including these important servings in your diet, you automatically lower your calorie count because they fill you up when you eat.

Tip: Berries, Strawberries and Spinach are two products loaded with nutrients and antioxidants, which are very important during Ramadan.

Olga: Since your immune system is directly connected to your gut, it is essential to have foods that act by improving and restoring your intestinal microflora. Add more probiotics and foods that boost your immunity like yogurt, kimchi, kombucha. Blueberries, oats, flaxseeds, leeks, onions, mushrooms, asparagus, garlic are all among powerful prebiotics and should be part of your diet too. They are quite easy to incorporate into your meals.

Stay on top of your hydration

There is nothing more important than re-hydrating during Ramadan. Remember, in normal circumstances, we are supposed to drink 2.7 to 3.5 litres of water a day. A much harder task when your window of intake has decreased. Keep drinking throughout the night, especially if you are working out during the month.

In case you didn't know, the more water you drink, the less water weight and bloating you have inyour body.

Gorka: If you do workout, try to hydrate yourself with 500-700ml of water/h + mineral salts. Weighing yourself before and after doing a workout is a good strategy to know how much water weight you have lost and to know how much you need to rehydrate.

Tip: Multiply the weight lost in Kg by 1.5 and the result will be the liquid you must drink to properly rehydrate.

Since you dont eat often, make your meals count nutritionally

Olga: There is no one specific nutrient, which will give you a better immune system; but a mixed diet with lots of fruits and vegetables definitely has its benefits. A balanced diet will give you both the macronutrients (protein and carbohydrate) and the vital micronutrients (zinc, selenium, vitamin A, etc.) that you need. A good combination of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes is what the body needs daily. Remember quality over quantity. Also, brightly coloured fruits and vegetables are imperative to include in your diet:

Red coloured fruits and vegetables contain anthocyanins, lycopene and other flavonoids that are known to fight stress.

Blue fruits like blueberries, plums and eggplant are great for protecting your nervous system.

Yellow coloured vegetables such as pumpkin, squash carrots, sweet potato are rich in beta-carotenes important for skin health, immune system and preventing cancer cell development.

For greens, choose the cruciferous family that includes broccoli, brussels sprouts, kales, collard, garden cress etc that provide liver and gut support.

Ideally, consuming foods with high nutrient density and diversity seems to be the best approach for minimizing cellular stress and promoting optimal health. For example, potatoes cannot be used to replace vegetables and fruits cant be substituted by juices. Stay away from refined starches as they are poor in fibers and micronutrients. Items to add to your grocery-shopping list are buckwheat, black rice, quinoa, millet, bean-based pasta, oats etc.

Gorka: Try to ingest a minimum of 30-40 g of protein divided into 4-5 intakes per day. This should be enough to preserve your lean muscle mass (something you might lose with the lack of food and workouts you can do in Ramadan) and help with recovery after each workout.

Try to adjust your carbohydrate intake based on exercise workload. If you do moderate/high intensity exercise, try to eat whole carbohydrates at each meal of the day (rice, potato, bread, sweet potato, pasta, cereals, etc.). If you do not exercise, then decrease the amount of these during the day.

Consuming fat is also important: consuming healthy fat such as nuts, blue fish, avocado, extra virgin olive oil, is important for the proper hormonal function of your body. Avoid all ultra-processed foods and replace with quality foods such as vegetables, nuts, fermented dairy products, eggs, fish, lean meats, and legumes.

Take advantage of eating at home

Usually Ramadan brings with it a slew of invitations to eat out and go to family members for iftar. If you stay home, like you are supposed to, cook your meals from scratch every day and you will notice an amazing change in your body and how you feel.

Gorka: The secret to maintaining a healthy diet is cooking your meals at home with delicious and fresh ingredients, even if its a simple dish such as soup. Vegetables and beans-based soups are an extremely nutritive source of fiber and contain important vitamins.

Many other healthy recipes, which are easy to create in your kitchen, are bowls, sauted food, and quinoa salads.

Increase your vitamin D intake

Gorka: In the current situation, many of us cannot be out in the sun, so it is important that we consume foods rich in vitamin D (vitamin found in fat). Also consider supplementing with vitamin D3 if you are inside all day. 15-20 minutes in the sun is equal to between 1000UI-2000UI/day.

Also, since we are talking vitamins, try to consume blue fish 3 times a week (salmon, mackerel, horse mackerel, sardines, tuna, etc). Foods high in omega 3 (EPA and DHA) contain many anti-inflammatory and immunological benefits that will keep your immune system strong.

Olga: Vitamin D is especially important for your immune system, especially during this time. It is vital to get your daily dose of sunshine by stepping out for a bit, whether thats in your balcony or for a quick walk around the block.

What worked for me

Ramadan has always been a difficult time for me to lose weight properly. Something about the late night sugar craving and the overcompensating for the food I am not eating during the day, as well as being exposed to many many tempting options while eating out.

This year has been different for obvious reasons. Staying home has kept me healthy. No pressure to try or even make indulgent and tasty food. I make basic food.

This Ramadan, I would actually get up from the dining table feeling a little bit hungry. Then I realised that was the trick: Plain old, simple calorie deficit.

I ate what was in front of me. Soup, salad and a main. I just tried to cut down on carbs as much as possible. But, I stopped eating before I felt full and turned to water instead of anything else.

I also skipped dessert (I know it sounds kind of sad, but its okay after a while). There was the odd day or two, where I would try a little bit of that kunafa or baklava, but I restricted myself in a way that I have never seen or done before and it showed me how easy it can get after you do it a few times.

I then wont eat a single thing until my suhoor at 3.30am. Thats when I eat filling foods that will keep me energised all day long. Two eggs, Egyptian foul and some cheese. And a lot of water.

Two weeks into Ramadan and for the first time in years I havent gained weight. I managed to lose over 2kg, thats an average of a healthy 1kg a week. Now I just need to keep going and by the end of the month I am looking at 4-5kgs dropped and a sweet difference in my jeans size.

Posted: May 14, 2020 at 9:41 pm

Bruna Garcia Fonsecabruna.garcia@anba.com.br

So Paulo The immunity and health benefits of intermittent fasting will be the first webinar on culture and health hosted by the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Institute of Arab Culture (ICArabe), with support from the Federation of Muslim Associations in Brazil (Fambras).

The free online event is taking place at 8 pm on Friday (15), featuring oncologist and Arab Chamber Marketing vice president Riad Younes as a speaker. Federal University of So Paulo (Unifesp) president and ICArabe founder Soraya Smaili will make a stint, and ICArabe president Mohamed Habib will be the presenter.

We will discuss intermittent fasting from two different angles. One of them is a very fortunato coincidence: there are big questions surrounding Ramadan fasting, whats good for you and what isnt. at the same time, well deal with how Ramadan fasting can affect a patients immunity amid the coronavirus pandemic, and whether it can make you more vulnerable to infection or not. Everyone knows that coronavirus can be worse in immunocompromised patients, Younes told ANBA. During Ramadan, the holy month of Islam, Muslims go on a fast from sunup to sundown. This year, Ramadan began on April 23.

The other angle is whether or not there are global health benefits to fasting, not only Ramadan fasting, but intermittent fasting. Well discuss intermittent fasting for people looking to lose weight and improve their health, whether that works or not, and whats the impact on health and the immune system, he said.

Younes said intermittent fasting is helpful in health improvement and weight loss, and that Ramadan fasting does not compromise immunity, although he warns that fasting isnt for everyone. Anyone with chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiac or kidney conditions are not advised to go on fasts, he said.

The webinar will last 1 hour and 15 minutes. Click here to register free of charge.
