Top tips to lose weight by improving your digestive system – Express

Posted: May 3, 2020 at 6:46 am

WEIGHT LOSS can often be a hard journey for many, not knowing where to start and not knowing the correct foods to feed your body. From crash diets to restricting your body of nutrients it is often hard to know what your body needs in order to lose weight healthily.

Your digestive system aka your gut, is one of the most important parts of your body, it breaks down food and nutrients which the body uses for energy, growth, and cell repair.

Alex Glover, nutritionist at Holland & Barrett told theExpress.co.uk: There are lots of ways to lose weight over the short term, but this doesnt mean theyre healthy or sustainable.

There are millions of bacteria living inside your gut, known as your microbiome. Everyones microbiome is unique to them, and everyones plays a large factor in weight management.

Studies by Kings College, London have shown that your microbiomes affect how even identical twins differ in gaining and storing weight.

Dr Rossi added: Rather than counting calories, Id recommend focusing on variety - the more, the better - and keeping to appropriate portion sizes.

However Dr Rossi explains that it is important not to obsess over portion control as this can impact your relationship with food as well as your overall well being.

The Gut Health Doctor continued: Unlike other types of carbohydrates, our human cells cant digest fibre. Its sole purpose is to feed our gut bacteria, which, in turn, produce beneficial compounds that help to balance our blood sugars and tell our brains that were full.

At the moment in the UK, were only getting 19g a day of fibre on average, out of the recommended 30g daily. Its a good idea to increase your fibre intake to help with blood sugar balance.

Healthline says that eating more foods rich in fibre can be an effective strategy to help lose weight.

However, it wont lead to long-term results unless you pair it with a lasting lifestyle change.

A long lasting lifestyle change refers to daily exercise, getting plenty of sleep and nourishing the body with good whole foods.

Dr Rossi suggests aiming for two pieces of fruit, five portions of vegetables, three portions of wholegrain, one to two portions of nuts or seeds daily.

High blood pressure – the best oil to lower your risk of deadly hypertension symptoms – Express

Posted: May 3, 2020 at 6:46 am

High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK. But, you could lower your risk of developing hypertension by regularly using olive oil with your cooking, it's been claimed.

High blood pressure - which is also known as hypertension - puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

The condition could lead to some deadly complications, including strokes and heart attacks.

It could be caused by eating an unhealthy diet, or by not doing enough exercise.

One of the easiest ways to protect against high blood pressure is use olive oil with your cooking, it's been claimed.

"Olive oil is a concentrated source of monounsaturated fats such as oleic acid, and antioxidants such as vitamin E, carotenoids and polyphenols such as oleocanthal," the nutritionist wrote on her website, MyLowerBloodPressire.com.

"These are most concentrated in extra virgin olive oil.

"When effects on cholesterol balance are also taken into account, a diet rich in olive oil reduces the risk of coronary heart disease by 25 percent and the risk of a second heart attack by 56 percent.

"Olive oil antioxidants are reduced when stored in glass bottles exposed to light.

"A bottle can lose 40 percent of its antioxidant oleocanthal within the average usage time of 10 months.

"Select olive oil in dark coloured glass or tins designed to prolong the health benefits, instead."

Meanwhile, you could also lower your blood pressure by regularly eating avocados, said the nutritionist.

They boost the amount of 'good' HDL cholesterol in the body, which significantly lowers the risk of a heart attack.

Nutritionist Tyler Minton reveals the pandemic challenges that lay ahead for fighters – MMA Junkie

Posted: May 3, 2020 at 6:46 am

For the average Joe, keeping a healthy diet during quarantine presents its challenges, but theyre the same problems professional fighters face, too.

Tyler Minton, a former mixed martial artist and current nutritionist for numerous MMA fighters including Daniel Cormier and Max Holloway, is aware hes going to have to play clean-up when fighters come calling for his services at the end of the coronavirus shutdown, because fighters fall into the same sort of eating traps we all do.

I definitely think its going to be a lot harder for a lot of fighters getting back into this, Minton said in a recent interview with MMA Junkie. If they havent been really diligent with their nutrition and training as much as they can, theyre going to have a lot of issues. If everything goes the way its supposed to be, theyre going to start putting on fights really often back-to-back especially if they havent got paid in a while. Theyre going to try to jump onto every card they can.

If theyve been spending this entire time eating whatever they could and blowing up, its going to be a really difficult time for them. Again, the ones that have been focusing this time on their nutrition and fixing those limiting factors are going to benefit from it.

With so many UFC athletes picking up short-notice fights, things could become even more hectic for Minton, whose life is already hectic enough with a baby on the way. When the time comes and an athlete needs him onsite, however, Minton will return to his usual fight week responsibilities.

Im ready as soon as my fighters need it, he said. If I have a fighter that needs me there, Im going to go ahead and do it, just for the pure fact theyre following the plans and doing what they can, but the support that I can give in person is exponentially better than I can without being there.

One positive note about living in 2020 is that technology can, in many cases, supplement in-person human interaction. While hed prefer to be onsite with his fighters, Minton said remote nutrition management is something that is viable until his presence is allowed or requested.

Im not on location like I would like to be, Minton said. I obviously cant work the UFC cards. One thing I do that separates me from a lot of other people is that I dont really only have a fight week relationship with my athletes. Most of these people are hearing from me every day. At the worst, theyre hearing from me weekly.

Theyre following their plans, still. Im checking in on them and keeping them motivated. Im making sure theyre where they need to be. A lot of them are just using this as a time to grow.

WWE news: Mick Foley wants Nancy Benoit inducted into Hall of Fame – GIVEMESPORT

Posted: May 2, 2020 at 5:46 pm

WWE icon Mick Foley has called for Chris Benoits tragically murdered wife Nancy to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

In 2007 over a three-day period, between June 22 and June 24, Benoit brutally murdered his wife Nancy and suffocated their seven-year-old son before hanging himself.

In an attempt to remember Nancys life in a different way, Foley has suggested that inducting her into the WWE Hall of Fame would be fitting.

The WWE originally paid tribute to Benoit, but after the murders were uncovered, he was completely erased from the companys history.

Foley took to social media to vent his thoughts, he said: For the past 13 years, Nancy Benoits life has been largely defined in the public eye by how she died. I think it is about time we changed that way of thinking.

Wouldnt it be nice if we could pause for a moment to remember instead, how she lived, how she worked, and to reflect on what her legacy in pro wrestling should be?

After the ring legend reached out to Sandra Toffoloni, Nancys sister, the two instantly started reflecting on the past.

Foley worked closely with Nancy in ECW and even closer with her when Benoit moved to WWE in 2000.

In a separate social media post, Foley addressed his proposal further, as he said: "Its an important discussion. But equally important to me, is that several fans, started talking about the career of Nancy Benoit, and how she should be remembered.

"For the first time I can recall, talk surfaced of Nancy possibly being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame - a topic I had never really considered it before.

"But seeing the 'Dark Side of the Ring', re-establishing contact with Sandra, and looking back on Nancys career these past couple of weeks has been an eye-opener for me."

The brutal killings of Nancy and seven-year-old Daniel, as well as the suicide of Chris Benoit, were documented on a series called 'Dark Side of the Ring', which Foley narrated.

Scientists will forever be uncertain as to Benoits motive, however, WWE attorney Jerry McDevitt, appearing on Live with Dan Abrams on July 17, 2007, said that Benoit was prescribed testosterone as part of a treatment for testosterone replacement therapy.

This surgery is seen as common medical practice for people who had used steroids in the past.

Foley later on in his social media post said: "I would love to see Nancy inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame - under whatever name or character her family and WWE collectively decide.

"For her work as Fallen Angel, I believe she deserves to be included. For her work as Woman during her first run in WCW when she feuded with Rick Steiner, managed Doom, and managed The 4 Horsemen - I believe she deserves to be included.

"For her run in ECW, and her second run with WCW - where she helped create a fascinating angle that blurred the line between storyline and reality - I believe she deserves to be included.

Inducting Nancy Toffoloni into the WWE Hall of Fame is the right thing to do. Let us remember her, and define her for who she was and what she did in life.

With Foleys status in the company, it is thought his request will be seriously considered.

Gigi Hadid confirms she’s expecting her first child – Arab News

Posted: May 2, 2020 at 5:45 pm

JEDDAH: Around the world, Muslims eating habits and sleeping patterns change during Ramadan with the obligation to abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours.

However, this sudden shift in routine needs to be handled carefully since our bodies are not used to this lifestyle.

Apart from spiritual advantages, fasting offers several health benefits. However, depending on ones health, every individual should adapt to this routine in their own way.

Several weeks before the holy month, people began circulating health tips on social media, including hints on weight loss, detoxification, ways to fight fatigue and dealing with bad breath.

Experts frequently warn people against blindly following online tips because of the health risk. In many cases, these suggestions lack scientific proof, and are accompanied by exaggerated claims and testimonials.

Arab News caught up with some health experts to discuss common misconceptions during Ramadan and asked them to provide helpful tips for healthy fasting.

People often view Ramadan as a chance to lose weight because tgheir food intake is lower than usual.

Dr. Mohannad Badghaish, a senior registrar in internal medicine, agrees that fasting can help shed extra weight and offers several guidelines.

Eat three balanced meals a day, including breakfast, dinner and sahoor. Each meal should consist of 30 percent protein, 15-20 percent fat and 50 percent carbohydrates, while also maintaining daily workout, he said.

Clinical and sports dietitian Sundos Malaikah advises against aiming for rapid weight loss, suggesting a gradual behavioral change that can be maintained during and after Ramadan.

Weight that is quickly lost will most probably be quickly regained. It is scientifically proven that such diets often fail. I always try to promote improving your relationship with food first, learning about hunger and satiety cues, while gradually changing eating behavior, she told Arab News.

People often adopt an all-or-nothing approach to changing habits, while taking things step by step is more sustainable and healthier, Malaikah said.

She suggests people avoid eating processed foods and rely on natural sources.

According to Malaikah, weight loss is simple if a person eats natural food and makes sure their food intake matches their energy needs.

Associating weight loss with less food is inaccurate, she said.

In a time where many people are worried about their health due to the coronavirus threat, fasting can help improve health when done properly.

However, an abundance of food and sweets not only prevents people from gaining the health benefits but also goes against the spiritual value of Ramadan.

Our immune system is quite complex and very powerful. There are no individual foods that will make it stronger. Unfortunately, that is a misconception. We can boost its fighting abilities by providing the right environment, which is staying physically active, getting enough high-quality sleep, managing stress and eating well, she said.

Badghaish also warned that excessive consumption of food has a negative impact on health and goes against Islamic teaching.

The Prophet Muhammad said: A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his spine straight. But if he must (fill it), then one-third of food, one-third for drink and one-third for air, he said.

Exercise is another important factor in weight loss, but there are conflicting opinions on the best time to work out during Ramadan and if it is wise to exercise while fasting.

Badghaish said that there is no harm in exercising while fasting, but for non-diabetics the best time to exercise is 60 to 90 minutes before breakfast/iftar.

Malaikah said that the benefits of exercising on an empty stomach are often exaggerated.

The claim we often hear is that our body is using our fat store for fuel. While that may be true, it doesnt mean fat loss. My body is using my fat stores for energy all the time simply because thats how it works. Using fat doesnt equate with losing fat, she said.

Therefore, the best time for a workout is whenever you can, and to lose weight you should watch your food intake.

Malaikah also offered a warning on detoxification diets or meals.

If our body had toxins in it, we would be lying in a hospital. Our body is equipped with strong mechanisms that detoxify and remove any harmful substances. No green juice will do that for you. Unfortunately, a lot of marketing tries to sell ideas that dont have much scientific evidence, she said.

If you want to make your body work at its best, do at least 150 minutes of cardio exercise during a week along with resistance exercises twice a week, and eat well and mindfully. Our bodies usually tell us when to stop eating and when to start. If we listened instead of continuing to eat while ignoring all these cues, our health would be better.

Many people usually experience headaches, fatigue, difficulties concentrating or doing our daily work while fasting, especially during the first days of Ramadan. Badghaish said that the main reason for these symptoms is insufficient compensation for the lost water and fluids from the body.

A man should drink about three liters of water per day, while a woman should drink 2.5 liters, he said.

Liquids that contain sugar are not recommended.

Caffeine also speeds up water loss, so its consumption should be reduced or avoided during Ramadan.

Bad breath may result from fasting due to lack of water and food for long hours, making one feel embarrassed and uncomfortable. However, it is possible to control the problem.

Malaikah said that certain types of food, such as spices, garlic and onions, can affect breath.

Maintaining proper oral hygiene helps brushing our teeth at least twice per day, using a mouthwash and flossing on a daily basis. Additionally, eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day often helps as well, she said.

Breath odor can be a sign of dental or gastrointestinal problems that might need expert help.

Among the causes of bad breath with the digestive tract are oesophageal reflux, high blood sugar and liver failure, Badghaish said.

While fasting is obligatory for all healthy adult Muslims, there are exemptions for those who are ill or whose health could be affected by fasting, for example, pregnant or breastfeeding women and people with certain health conditions.
