As of April 16th, South Dakota reported a COVID outbreak of 598 workers at Smithfield Foods, a pork processing facility in Sioux Falls responsible for 5% of U.S. pork production, causing the plant to close indefinitely. The Chinese-owned company released a statement that the virus is pushing our country perilously close to the edge in terms of our meat supply, making it impossible to keep our grocery stores stocked if our plants are not running.

Several other U.S. meat processing plants have also closed temporarily, including a Tyson Foods plant in Iowa, and a JBS USA Colorado factory, which both had two deaths.

Part of the problem may be the high concentration of the U.S. meat industry in the hands of a few. Four companies control 80% of the beef industry. Five companies control about 60% of the chicken market, and four companies control nearly 70 percent of pork.

Oh darn, we might run out of meat.

The Food Party! isn't crying over closures, or spilt milk in the news however. On the contrary, we feel empowered. Most Americans need to cut down on meat. (On average, we ate more than 217 pounds of beef, pork and/or chicken in 2019 (over 4 pounds weekly). Important note here, everyone: Belly fat these days is often referred to as visceral fat because that sounds scarier. If you really need to shed visceral fat because it's endangering your life, that is an area where you should probably be seeking medical advice, if that is at all possible. But while this guide is more about slimming down a bit, or avoiding ballooning during lockdown, belly fat loss also has an element of visceral fat loss.

Our lose belly fat tips aren't necessarily quick, and this is not about telling you how to get six pack abs although we have plenty of guides to that, too. Intermittent fasting is becoming more and more popular. It involves significantly cutting calories or abstaining from food altogether for a portion of the day or week, and then cramming all your calories into a much shorter time window.

The best-known intermittent fasting plan is the 5:2 diet, where you eat as you normally would (although hopefully a bit healthier) for five days a week, then scoff no more than 600 calories two days a week.There are also variants of this diet where you consume almost no calories, two days per week. This is much more doable than it sounds, so long as you are in good general health, but it's not exactly fun.

However, for trainees who are serious but not that serious, there's the 16:8 diet. With this diet you have only 8 hours a day to fit all your meals in, but can only drink water (and maybe some black coffee, if you're feeling naughty) within a 16 hour fasting period outside of those 8 hours. Most choose to eat from 10am to 6pm, but as long as you stay within an eight hour window, you can start and finish at any time of the day. Why try fasting, though? Well, during the fasting period the body will run out of sugar to run on, and so will start eating up the bodys fat stores. The big negative is the adjustment period: if you're used to a big breakfast or an early dinner, a 16-hour fast feels tough at first, especially if you're exercising. As well doing both muscle-building and cardio exercises, if you want to lose belly fat its also important to switch up the pace of your workout.

The one thing this Tassie mum refused to do before her wedding day – 9Honey

When Kate Kernan married her husband Justin two months ago, she didn't try to change her body before the big event.

The 26-year-old tells 9Honey she was already happy with how her body looked and felt.

"Even though usually people go crazy before their wedding and try to get to a certain number, I didn't because I was already comfortable," she adds.

"I love all my wedding photos. In all of them you can tell I felt comfortable and that I am happy and healthy. That's all that matters."

However, Kate hasn't always been so happy with her body, having struggled with body image issues since she was a child and trying her first diet shortly after leaving high school.

"I always loved my food, especially chocolate. I have a massive sweet tooth."

Kate, who lives in Tasmania, didn't know anything about how to lose weight, so simply stopped eating.

"Then I'd end up eating chocolate and stuff like that. I tried diet shakes at one stage but they were disgusting," she says.

Working in a cafe didn't help, surrounded by food each day, and despite persevering with the shakes for almost a year, she remained the same size.

"I just wasn't happy with myself. I was unhappy at how I had let myself go," Kate recalls.

"Then I met my husband. I went to hospital when my nephew was born and he was visiting my nephew as well."

Justin, 36, was a friend of her brother's. It was truly meant to be.

"I still wanted to lose weight and I wanted to be happy with my body, but I never was," Kate adds.

"Justin always said he liked how I looked, that he was happy if I was happy."

Kate says she gained more weight, reaching her highest weight while pregnant with her daughter Alice.

A month away from giving birth, a friend introduced her to Healthy Mummy.

"I had put on a lot of weight and I was unhappy with how I looked," Kate recalls.

Her first few weeks and months as a mum weren't her happiest time, with Kate saying she didn't go out much.

"I didn't have depression but I was very uncomfortable and none of my clothes fit," she adds.

"I now take medication so I can work normally compared to how I was," she said.

The first time Kate weighed herself was just after having a daughter and then following her weight loss efforts. During her second pregnancy with son Arlo she maintained her health habits and quickly lost the pregnancy weight the second time around.

These days she avoids the scale, choosing to focus on how she feels instead of a number.

"I stopped weighing myself. Now I know when my body is at its healthiest."

Workout tips from a woman who quit the gym before quarantine – TODAY

A few months ago, I was just like many other people who relied on the gym to keep up my fitness. A trip to my local fitness center was a built-in part of most mornings for me. After many years of working out to keep an extra 25 pounds off my 5-foot frame, I relied on my treadmill time not just to maintain my weight loss but also as a way to burn off stress.

Around New Years, I was feeling uninspired by my gym workouts I was doing the same cardio all the time and I was no longer looking forward to it. Coupled with the fact that my gym felt more like a senior center with dusty, worn out equipment that often didnt work I started to wonder why I was paying a monthly fee (plus annual dues) for something I didnt like or maybe even need. I noticed that when I went running outside, I sweated harder and my mood was brighter. Plus and this was a big bonus #outsideisfree! Mustering up my courage, I turned in my cancellation request to the gym and never looked back.

If youre one of those people who are missing your gym time in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak I get it. Not having a place to go where you can exercise and be part of a fit community can be a scary thing. Its normal to wonder if youll lose your current level of fitness or abandon a weight-loss regimen thats been working for you. But before you resign yourself to eating cookies and watching Tiger King, Im here to tell you it doesnt have to be that way. I actually quit the gym two months before all of this sheltering in place started, and the fact is, you can make it work without shelling out for tons of expensive equipment.

I spoke to two strong, female owners of two of my favorite boutique fitness classes in NYC Sadie Kurzban, founder and CEO of 305 Fitness, and Amanda Freeman, founder and CEO of SLT and Stretch*d, for their advice on staying active without the gym or in-person classes.

There are so many free resources out there right now, said Kurzban, whose own company is offering free cardio dance workouts on its YouTube channel every day. Many fitness professionals are hosting free or donation-based classes on YouTube, Instagram Live and Zoom. Whether people are sticking to a tight budget or have more to spend, theres something for everyone.

After cancelling my gym membership, I started running outdoors most mornings and loving it. But then one morning, after a run, I felt my knee make a decidedly not-normal pop. I quickly realized that I needed to find a different form of exercise, something with less impact that was still easily accessible.

After doing a few trials with different apps, I homed in on the My Fitness app by Jillian Michaels. I have loved Michaels since her days on The Biggest Loser and remembered doing her DVDs back in the day (her fast feet move still kills me!). Her app seemed to offer one of the most comprehensive, customizable plans, plus I love her tough-but-informative, tell-it-like-it-is training style. The workouts are all around 20 to 30 minutes long and pack a serious punch.

Since being quarantined, Ive learned that the best way to squeeze my exercise sessions in with work and two home-schooled kids is to go into my kids playroom and work out first thing in the morning. Freeman agreed that this is the way to go. Its helpful to choose the one time of day when you have the most energy and the fewest obligations pulling at you and stick to that time, she said. For me, its best to work out an hour after I wake up, so Ive had my green tea, but I havent gotten too involved in work yet. I love checking it off my list first, so I can focus on work and my kids for the rest of the day and night.

Freeman also advised putting workouts into your calendar just like you would any mandatory meeting. You wouldnt skip a virtual meeting with your boss or your childs teacher, so view it the same way, she said.

And while some people might decide to use this quarantine time to get in shape, a better way to look at it might be to let go of those expectations and just focus on moving your body every day in a way that feels good.

As we navigate this new time, lets be kind to ourselves, take it one day at a time and choose to move for the sake of feeling something, Kurzban said. Take the pressure off.

If youre juggling more right now, aim for shorter but still impactful workouts, suggested Freeman. Think 20-minute runs or 30-minute bodyweight HIIT sessions. If you have the time to commit, find an hour-long sweat session youve always wanted to try or double up on 30-minute classes. For example, you could pair an abs class with a cardio blast class.

I dont think theres just one single machine, app or workout thats the solution to exercising without the gym during this unusual time its about finding the activity that works for and inspires you, and then making the time to do it non-negotiable.

Its really your mindset thats going to keep you feeling fit, looking good and staying active and take heart that this same philosophy will still hold true when the world opens back up. Maybe youll be first in line to hit the gym, or maybe youll have found a whole new way to move that feels right for you.

Sunlight and bleach can both kill the novel coronavirus, a federal official told the daily White House briefing on Thursday. But US President Donald Trump turned what should have been a simple scientific summary into a puzzling stream of dangerous ideas about somehow streaming light into the body and suggestions about injecting disinfectants.

Here's what was said: Bill Bryan, a senior official at the US Department of Homeland Security, said studies on the virus showed bleach kills coronavirus in about five minutes, and isopropyl alcohol destroys it even faster.

He also said the virus dies quickest under direct sunlight, and that temperature and humidity affect how long the virus survives.

This was Trump's take:

It was not immediately clear how Trump would propose bringing light into the body.

Scientists were horrified by his claims. Multiple experts warned after Trump's briefing that nobody should ingest disinfectant, and that it simply doesn't work.

The World Health Organization says on its website that exposing yourself to the sun or high temperatures does not prevent Covid-19, and warns specifically against using ultraviolet lamps, including tanning lamps, to try to kill virus.

"UV lamps should not be used to sterilize hands or other areas of skin as UV radiation can cause skin irritation," the WHO cautions.

Too much UV light damage can lead to skin cancer.

And chlorine bleach is toxic: it can and does kill people who drink it. The US Food and Drug Administration regularly warns the public against drinking bleach, or even inhaling fumes from bleach. It's also irritating to skin.

Given Alex Rodriguez’s history with doping scandals, should he be allowed to own New York Mets? – MEAWW

This week, reports emerged that former baseball player Alex Rodriguez and his fiance Jennifer Lopez are eyeing a bid to buy the Major Leagues Baseball (MLB) team, New York Mets. However, with Rodriguez's extensive history with using performance-enhancing drugs, should such a sale be allowed?

In an earlier report, we had written that Rodriguez had opened up to 'The Tonight Show' host Jimmy Fallon about his inclination towards launching a future bid for the Mets and also confessed how he grew up a Mets fan before winning a world series with the Yankees. "I will say this, if the opportunity came up (to buy the Mets), I would certainly look at it," he told Fallon. He also went on to say how the 1986 championship-clinching game was one the best nights of his life after the birth of his daughters.

While Rodriguez now has a thriving career as a baseball analyst, commentator and host and enjoys the limelight coming from being engaged to actor, dancer and singer Jennifer Lopez it is difficult to erase his baseball career. Even though he was once dubbed the greatest baseball player of his generation, his achievements were marred by cheating scandals.

His playing career had resulted in one World Series title, three MVP awards, 14 All-Star appearances, 696 home runs and earnings of $452M the most in the history of Major League Baseball.

The Biogenesis scandal, which resulted in Rodriguez's suspension, broke out in 2013 and was the biggest baseball performance-enhancing drugs (PED) scandal, but Rodriguez had been caught using performance-enhancing drugs much before that.

In July 2007, former outfielder and steroid-user Jose Canseco called Rodriguez a "hypocrite" and alleged that the latter was using steroids something Rodriguez vehemently denied.

In 2009, Sports Illustrated reported that Rodriguez had tested positive for two anabolic steroids, testosterone and Primobolan, during his 2003 season playing for the Texas Rangers. This was the same season in which he captured his first American League Most Valuable Player award, broke 300 career home runs (hitting 47 that year) and earned one of his 10 Silver Slugger Awards.

The same year, Rodriguez told ESPN that he had used PEDs when he first started out, stating, "When I arrived in Texas in 2001, I felt an enormous amount of pressure. I felt like I had all the weight of the world on top of me and I needed to perform, and perform at a high level every day."

In 2003, as the result of a collectively bargained union agreement, there was no penalty or punishment for a positive test during an anonymous drug survey and mandatory drug testing only began in 2004 after more than 5% of the samples taken from players in 2003 came back positive. In 2013, the New York Times alleged that Rodriguez tested positive for a banned stimulant in 2006.

It was the Biogenesis scandal that broke out the same year that catapulted the MLB, Rodriguez and other players of note to infamy. A disgruntled former employee of Biogenesis in America a health clinic briefly operating in Coral Gables, Florida, specializing in weight loss and hormone replacement therapy released records of the clinic's real business. These records showed that players such as Rodriguez, Melky Cabrera, Bartolo Coln, Ryan Braun and Nelson Cruz were getting access to PEDs, thanks to an unlicensed doctor.

Over the next two months, MLB suspended 14 players. Meanwhile, penalties for getting caught increased. First-time offenses went from 50 to 80 games, while second-time offenses went from 100 games to an entire season. Any offender caught doping is now ineligible for that year's playoffs, no matter when the infraction occurs.

For a long time, Rodriguez insisted he was innocent and even alleged that the MLB engaged in a "witch hunt" to get him out of baseball when he sued the league in 2013. Rodriguez and his team voluntarily dropped the suit in February 2014.

In 2019, Billy Corben's documentary on the scandal titled 'Screwball' released and oddly, news of Rodriguez's engagement to Lopez broke a day after the trailer for the documentary released. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Corben described the scandal as Florida f**kery distilled like freebasing Florida f**kery and crony capitalism".

Although Rodriguez has since apologized for his role in the Biogenesis scandal, Corben was suspicious of Rodriguez's image rehab. Corben told Rolling Stone, "This is the guy who was never beloved. He was booed by his own fans, for crying out loud. Without so much as a mea culpa tour, he hasnt rehabilitated his image, hes created an entirely new one that never existed before."

In August 2013, Rodriguez was suspended through the 2014 season (211 games at the time of the decision), but was allowed to play in 2013 pending his appeal of that decision. His suspension was upheld in January 2014 after being allowed to play in the 49 games between the decision and the hearing, technically reducing the suspension to 162 games. In July 2014, Rodriguez was sued by his lawyers for $380,000 in unpaid legal fees.

In November that year, it was revealed that Rodriguez had admitted to the Drug Enforcement Administration that he had used performance-enhancing drugs as early as January of the same year and Rodriguez got immunity from prosecution.

Many have also called into question MLB's handling of the Biogenesis scandal, suggesting that the MLB's actions were motivated to save face rather than to take serious action on the use of PEDs among players.

Given Rodriguez's lengthy history of association with PEDs, it stands to question whether the one-time-great baseball player ought to be given the power of owning an entire baseball team and whether the MLB would even allow it.

However, with Rodriguez's new image and with Lopez's name included in the deal, it stands to reason that the MLB would be okay with Rodriguez being one of the owners of the New York Mets, even if that may leave baseball lovers with a sour taste in their mouths.

As 'Screwball' filmmaker Corben said on the Biogenesis scandal, "When Alex was useful as a heel, he was the villain. When Bud Selig needed to salvage his own reputation as the steroid commissioner and was trying some kind of redemption and legacy-saving measures, Alex was the villain. And now that Bud Seligs gone, (current commissioner) Rob Manfred, who was responsible for this entirely botched, potentially illegal investigation of Biogenesis, ascends (within MLB) into a position of power and decides, "Oh, Alex is an ally." They let bygones be bygones now? Like after the s**tshow that they put each other through? It certainly goes to show how not legitimate MLBs concerns are about steroids and shooting up in baseball, because its obviously good for business."
