The B1G teams that will be hurt most by the loss of spring practice – Saturday Tradition

With spring practices and several games either postponed or canceled, theres a good chance that college football teams wont have the chance to start working together until summer, or perhaps even August. It puts every team in the same situation heading into the 2020 season.

But we can all agree that spring practice is a little more important to some teams than others. Those 15 spring practices can be essential for programs ushering in new coaches, replacing a ton of key players or even helping incoming recruits gain a little experience before the start of the season.

Yes, every team in the B1G and college football, for that matter is experiencing the same situation this spring. A few will be hurt by the delay of team activities than others, though. It could seriously alter the expectation for six teams in the conference in 2020.

Mike Locksley needed all the time he could get with his team this spring after a dreadful first season at Maryland. After such a hot start to the 2019 campaign, the Terps quickly fell from grace, ending the year with a 3-9 record, just one B1G win (against Rutgers) and getting blown off the field several times.

Theres some reason for optimism moving forward with Locksley bringing in the nations 31st-ranked recruiting class, which includes heralded five-star wide receiver Rakim Jarrett. Several players from the 2020 class would likely get the chance to see early playing time and possibly make significant contributions for the Terrapins.

Maryland had 11 players enroll early, hoping to get an early jump on the transition from high school to the college game. Theres a good chance a handful still see plenty of snaps this fall, but the experience of spring practice wouldve been extremely beneficial, especially with so many skilled players graduating or leaving for the NFL Draft.

A lot of things need to be addressed in College Park, and its going to be tough to clean up so many areas without the spring season.

Spring is vital for a recently-hired head coach and his new team. And with Rutgers essentially in the cellar since it joined the B1G in 2014, there are no expectations for a quick turnaround, even for Greg Schiano, who worked miracles during his first run with the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers has been behind in recruiting, so it lacks the talent that can sometimes hide a teams underlying issues. To magnify the situation, players are learning new schemes and styles on both sides of the football and will now have to learn quickly in the summer and fall. Obviously, thats not ideal for a team with three wins in the last two seasons and hasnt won a B1G contest since 2017.

If theres one bright spot, its that Schiano has done an excellent job poaching from the transfer portal, bringing in experienced players who can (somewhat) hit the ground running. Names like Aron Cruickshank, Michael Dwumfour and Malik Barrow could provide a spark for the Scarlet Knights in 2020 (if Cruickshank is granted immediate eligibility). Still, its hardly enough to counter the loss of those 15 spring practices.

Considering what Schiano inherited, the loss of the spring season doesnt really delay the process or hinder the long-term plans at Rutgers, but it could result in another painful fall for the program.

Much like Rutgers, Michigan State is entering a brand new era for its football program. Spring wouldve allowed Mel Tucker to get players accustomed to his coaching style and new scheme implementations. Now, the Spartans will have to wait to make those adjustments.

The good news for Michigan State is that Tucker retained most of Mark Dantonios defensive staff, and was able to bring former assistants and players back to East Lansing to aid in the transition to the programs fresh look. It wouldnt really be all that surprising if MSUs defense is still fairly strong though it will see at least some drop-off with Kenny Willekes, Joe Bachie and Josiah Scott gone.

Perhaps the biggest concern is the offense which has been a big issue for the last three seasons. Not only is Jay Johnson the new play-caller at MSU, but the Spartans are looking to replace an experienced quarterback in Brian Lewerke and searching to find playmakers at wide receiver. A team that lost its most talented offensive pieces needed the spring to put together its depth chart.

It was going to be interesting to see what the Spartans looked like in 2020 anyway, but the end of spring practice could really hinder the teams bowl hopes in the fall.

Jeff Brohms situation isnt quite as concerning as some of the other teams mentioned on this list, but again, a roster full of young talent couldve benefited significantly from those 15 days of spring practice. This is a team that will rely heavily on underclassmen again, which likely includes a handful of recruits from the 2020 class.

The two challenges for Purdue will be at quarterback and essentially the entire defense. The Boilermakers were hoping to utilize spring to create a competition between quarterbacks Aidan OConnell and Jack Plummer, who both played significantly after losing the starting job to Elijah Sindelar, who later lost his season to injury.

Purdue is also ushering in a brand new defensive style, hiring Bob Diaco to replace Nick Holt after three seasons. The defense has been a nightmare for the Boilers the last two seasons and need a lot of help in that department.

At the very least, Purdue will have the spring to recover and rehabilitate from injuries last season. And, for some, perhaps thats better than getting in a few extra workouts.

Really, Nebraska is in a similar situation with Purdue. Missing spring doesnt completely derail the goals the Huskers have for the 2020 season, but its the idea of the younger talent and early enrollees who couldve sped up the transition process.

Nebraska did make a change at offensive coordinator, hiring Matt Lubick. And while having the spring to get adjusted to having him on the sidelines wouldve been nice, its hard to imagine anything drastically changes on that side of the football with Scott Frost in charge. The skill position players should be fine, but its the offensive line that couldve used a little extra work.

The biggest area of concern will be Nebraskas defensive line, which lost all of its starters from a year ago. Obviously getting guys acclimated into more prominent roles up front wouldve been a serious advantage for the Huskers. Now Erik Chinander will have to wait until summer or fall to get his depth chart solidified up front.

With Nebraska having a gauntlet on the back end of the schedule, the Huskers really needed to hit the ground running in 2020. But it may take a few weeks for the team to find a rhythm in the third year under Frost.

Northwestern was a worthy candidate to land on this list simply because of a 3-9 record from last season and it could use spring to eliminate some of the uncharacteristic issues it endured last season penalties, turnovers, miscommunication, etc. On that front, yes, Pat Fitzgerald absolutely needed the spring.

On the other hand, the Wildcats are always pretty sound defensively and, when the offense isnt stagnant, keeps the team in games pretty frequently. Even though it was a down year in Evanston, Fitzgerald has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to fielding a defense that can hold its weight against anyone in the conference.

The big question is on offense, with new coordinator Mike Bajakian stepping in for Mick McCall. Northwestern desperately needed time to get things right on that side of the ball, learn the new offense and produce something better than 2019. The addition of Peyton Ramsey should counter some of those problems, as hes been one of the most accurate passers in the B1G the last two seasons and has a knack for moving the chains.

Lawrence school employees will be paid during closure; plans still in works for others affected by shutdowns – Lawrence Journal-World

After orders to close school facilities, Lawrence public school employees will continue to be paid through the end of the academic year, the district announced late Wednesday afternoon.

But long-term plans are still being developed for some other area government and school district employees affected by closures related to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Douglas Countys health department ordered local public and private schools, indoor parks and recreation facilities and public libraries closed for two weeks in response to the spread of the new coronavirus. The order took effect immediately upon the announcement late Friday and will last until at least Sunday, March 29.

Schools, however, will be closed much longer. Gov. Laura Kelly on Tuesday ordered all Kansas schools closed for the rest of the academic year, adding some uncertainty to the pay for their employees.

Most employees working for the Douglas County school districts were set to be paid during the previously ordered two-week closure.

Prior to Kellys announcement, teachers of all three school districts were set to receive pay for their salaries in line with their negotiated contracts. Public school teachers are often paid through union-negotiated contracts, which can spread their earnings for nine months of work over a 12-month period.

During her press conference announcing the long-term closures, Kelly said school employees will be paid both the salaried employees and the hourly employees. But Kelly did not provide any details on how that would happen, and it was not outlined in her signed executive order.

Teachers are expected to be asked to teach their students in some virtual-school fashion for the rest of the school year. Julie Boyle, spokeswoman for the Lawrence school district, said in a news release that the school district is currently working to implement a continuous learning plan for students that will begin on March 30.

The status of long-term pay within the Lawrence school district was undetermined for most of Wednesday, but at about 4:30 p.m., Boyle said in an email to the Journal-World that all employees would be paid through the end of the school year.

Current contracted and at-will employees of the Lawrence Public Schools will be paid through the end of the school year, according to their regular payroll schedule, she said. The district is working now on plans to communicate this information to all of its employee groups.

Melissa Johnson, Lawrence school board president, said Wednesday that the board appreciated Kellys comments, as paying hourly employees was one of its concerns and priorities amid the ordered closure.

Were grateful that Governor Kelly has addressed this at the state level so that we are able to communicate that with (hourly) staff and hopefully put their mind at ease as we tackle this new normal for the remainder of the school year, Johnson said.

Additionally, the hourly staff for the Eudora school district will be paid during the extended closure. After Kellys announcement, Eudora school district spokesman Mark Dodge told the Journal-World in an email that the school districts work agreements with hourly staff would be honored for the rest of the school year.

However, the Baldwin City school district is still up in the air. Superintendent Paul Dorathy on Monday said the school board approved paying hourly workers during the original two-week closure, but he added the board would need to make another decision if the closure was extended.

All employees would still receive pay during this closure, Dorathy said Monday. Our board would have to discuss extending the pay past the two weeks.

After Kellys announcement of extended closure, Dorathy said Wednesday the board will need to meet in the near future to make a decision on pay for the rest of the school year. He said a special board meeting will be scheduled, but a date for that meeting has not yet been determined.

Lawrence board member Shannon Kimball, who is also the president for the Kansas Association of School Boards, said Wednesday that there were many details to be worked out, but she believed it was the states intention for all school hourly staff to be paid for the remainder of the school year.

There is still a lot of moving parts that everybody is trying to put together to make sure we cover all the bases, she said. Everything Ive heard and read indicates that the intention is that districts will be able to pay those hourly staff. The details about what you have to do to make that happen are still in the works.

For the city of Lawrence, the two-week closure affects the citys four recreation centers, the Indoor Aquatic Center and the Prairie Park Nature Center. The Lawrence Public Library has also closed. For now, all of those employees can continue to receive paychecks.

Parks and Rec Director Derek Rogers said Tuesday the department currently employs about 80 full-time staff and 125 part-time workers, which include lifeguards, park maintenance staff, front desk receptionists, recreation instructors and sports league officials. Rogers said the city is sympathetic to how employees are affected by the closure orders and cancellations, and that the city is providing options for them to continue working.

Specifically, Rogers said the closure and cancellations require a lot of customer support, and even those employees whose jobs are directly affected still have the option to come into work through March 29.

It was very quickly how this happened, Rogers said. As we adjust to the consequences and how we operate in response to the coronavirus and the speed of closing our rec facilities, we are supporting our part-time workers with continued, consistent employment over the next two weeks.

Apart from handling customer service-related tasks for all the cancellations, Rogers said the department will soon begin a deep cleaning of all its buildings. In addition to the indoor pool and the nature center, the four recreation centers include basketball courts, indoor soccer fields, locker rooms, cardio equipment, weight rooms, game rooms, gymnastic areas and multipurpose rooms.

However, Rogers said if the departments facilities are ordered to remain closed beyond March 29, it has not yet been determined how that will affect staffing or whether the department can continue to employ everyone. He noted that the coronavirus outbreak will affect both indirect and direct revenue for the department and the city. Rogers said indirect revenue comprises sales tax and alcohol tax revenue that will take a hit from slow sales citywide and the cancellation of the NCAA basketball tournament.

The closure order directly affects the departments revenue for pool entrance fees, class and activity fees, and facility rentals, among other revenue. For example, Assistant Director Lee Ice said that the closure has so far required the cancellation of two volleyball tournaments at Sports Pavilion Lawrence, which Ice estimated would have generated around $30,000 total for the department. Ice said that last March the department generated $350,000 in direct revenue, including fees for tournaments, recreation classes, swimming pool entrances, sports league registrations and facility rentals, among other fees.

The department employs up to 700 part-time workers in the summer to staff additional activities such as the outdoor pool, day camps and summer sports leagues. Ice said the direction right now is for the department to continue to recruit part-time workers for the summer season so that the department is prepared to open recreation facilities and offer activities.

The library is much less dependent on vulnerable revenue sources and will continue to pay all staff members, including those who will not be working during the closure. Executive Director Brad Allen said the library has about 90 employees, about half of whom are part-time. Allen said on Monday that the library is still determining which employees will continue to work during the closure, but that all employees would be paid for the schedule they normally work regardless.

Basically we are in a position to where everybody is getting paid for their normal work, whether they are able to come in and do it or not, Allen said.

Allen said that since property tax revenue supports the librarys operations, there is little to no revenue loss due to the closure. Allen said the only impacts on revenue were the minimal charges for photocopies and renting the librarys auditorium. The library does not charge late fees for overdue materials.

The 1 Seed in the Xavier Sweet 16* is the Memorable 2016 Squad – Banners On The Parkway

The Xavier Sweet 16* features all 19 Xavier teams from the KenPom era in one bracket where Twitter polls will decide the winners. Heres your 1 seed, the 2016 Xavier Musketeers!

Chris Mack was building off of a good season and Sweet 16 appearance with most of the players returning for an encore. The offense saw another uptick in efficiency with the main difference being that this team played much faster. A jump from 65 to 72 in tempo department just goes to show how much quicker this team played and how Mack played to his players strengths.

On the defensive end, Mack switched between his beloved packline and a 1-3-1 zone that allowed the teams athleticism to cause chaos. This was showcased in an early season win where the 1-3-1 baffled Michigan and led to Xavier walking away with a victory. All around, Mack put in an offense that allowed for quick ball movement, a defense that compensated for the lack of man-to-man defenders and enough free throw drills to get Jalen Reynolds to shoot 65% from the stripe; just an A+ job all around.

With most of the players from the previous year returning, hopes were high that X could put together a special season. Trevon Bluiett (15.1/6.1/2.2) dropped most of the baby weight and his shot and footwork became lightning quick, Myles Davis (10.8/3.6/4.1) continued to be a sharpshooter and the emotional leader on the court and JP Macura (9.4/2.6/2.0) continued his quest to become every opponents least favorite human ever. Jalmes Farrnolds came back for another go-around of cleaning the glass and dunking on everything that moved. Remy Abell (6.4/1.5/1.6) accepted his role of glue guy on offense and was a bloodhound on defense, hassling opposition guards relentlessly.

Edmond Sumner (11/3.4/3.6) took a redshirt in 15 and became the starting point guard in this season. He was lightning fast, had incredible bounce (just ask Octavius Ellis) and shot the 3 well enough to keep the defense honest. Larry Austin Jr. (1.8/1.1/1.1) spelled Sumner at point guard and rarely (never) hunted his own shot, but used his minutes to keep the tempo up and keep things firing. Kaiser Gates and Sean OMara made cameo appearances but would have to wait another year for their moments in the spotlight.

A couple buy games were brushed aside before an away demolition of Michigan, then came the Thanksgiving tournament. X had rarely played their best, or even mediocre, ball over the November holiday, but steamrolled every opponent they saw before humiliating Dayton 90-61 in the final. X kept rolling into the Crosstown Shootout where Myles Davis went off and Ed posterized rim protector Octavius Ellis en route to a victory. An away comeback against Wake Forest concluded a 12-0 non conference schedule.

Conference play started at Villanova where things went as expected on the scoreboard, but Ed Sumner sustained a head injury under the rim. X quickly regrouped for a 4 game win streak before losing to Gerogetown at home. This led to a top 10 matchup at Providence where JP ignored Macks signal for a timeout and buried the game with a 3. Things kept rolling right along with a loss at Creighton as the only blip on the radar. On February 24, X hosted Villanova and, for the first time, beat the Wildcats. This game is loaded with too many memories to pack into this article, so Ill leave a link at the bottom. This momentous victory was immediately countered by a loss at Seton Hall, but X righted the ship on Senior Day to beat Creighton and end the regular season 26-4 overall and 14-4 in Big East play.

X began the Big East Tournament with a blowout win over Marquette but fell in the next round to Seton Hall and a red-hot Isaiah Whitehead. No matter, the Muskies still pulled a 2-seed and rode Jalmes Farrnolds to a victory over Weber State. The good times ended there though, X could never pull away against Wisconsin before Koenigs 3 went in as time expired, ending Xaviers best ever season far too soon.

Its easy to just remember the way this season ended and forget of how good this Xavier team really was. They were fast, unselfish, deep and tough to the core. This season was still packed with great memories like JPs 3s against Nova, his dunk at Hinkle, Ed throwing down dunks on Marquette, or Jalen Reynolds growling at anyone foolish enough to get near him. Despite the sour ending, this team gave us many great memories and they will be forever beloved by Xavier Nation.

The 2020 Spring high school sports season has been put to a halt through at least April 12 due to the coronavirus threat.Kentucky High Schools Athletic Association Commissioner Julian Tackett sent a letter to all school after receiving guidance from Gov. With so many new things being learned each day about this pandemic and the spread of the virus, you have to take that approach. Sports, for many, is such a vital part of our society and lifestyle. However, something like this we are experiencing puts sports and other interests in perspective quickly. I hope the return of sports is something that we can look forward to as we try to get through this difficult period.Newton said the teams had been practicing for about three weeks and were about to start having scrimmages and games.It is hard to go through your Spring training period then have the plug pulled on you, Newton said. If we were allowed to play games on April 13, we had discussed the need to have at least one week of conditioning and practice to get prepared before playing actual games. If we were to try and play games immediately, we felt it would not be prudent for our student-athletes. It would be hard to go dormant for four weeks and then come to play games right away. The knowledge and training we have would say we would be putting athletes in a great risk for injury and the loss of some or all of their remaining season as well.At the minimum, Smallwood said the postponement will mean a shorter season.With that said, the decision of the KHSAA to institute a dead period brings about an equal playing field for the duration of the postponement, Smallwood said. Overall, I believe there is still opportunity for a great Spring season even with it shortened.Smallwood said there obviously has been a lot of emotion over the decision from players and coaches.I believe the biggest concern among both players and coaches is whether they will have a season at all and what it will look like, Smallwood said. While concerned with the unknown, both players and coaches have been very flexible and willing to do what is necessary to focus on being able to resume their season at the earliest date possible.Newton said most WHS coaches, while in shock, understand the gravity of the situation.Most (coaches) are parents themselves and are concerned for their families and the ability to keep them safe and provide for their needs, Newton said. They would love nothing more than to have the opportunity to coach and to be around their athletes. You prepare all year for this window of 10-12 weeks of competition and then have it pulled before it ever gets started. It has to be tough on them. The players I have spoken with or heard from are optimistic, but are having a tough time trying to wrap their heads around it. They are smart. They listen and are connected to the world around them. They are continuing to train and condition on their own as if they will have an abbreviated season. As each day goes by and we hear more, they are also having to consider the possibility that they may not have a season. That is tough for 13-18 year olds. I can only hope and pray that they get a chance to have some normalcy very soon. This means the opportunity to get back to in-school instruction, to be around their friends and hopefully back to the sport they love.As long as everyone adheres to guidelines that have been set in place to curb further spread of COVID-19, Smallwood is optimistic the Spring season will resume and the athletes will be able to have fun again.Undoubtedly, the last several days have been intense with decisions at all levels that are not easy, Smallwood said. One thing we must remember is the goal is to keep everyone as healthy and safe as possible during this time. Life gets in the way sometimes and you have to make adjustments. My outlook is to remain positive and hopeful that all things will return to what we know as normal daily activity very soon.While he does not have a crystal ball, Newton said while he is hopeful the season will resume, there could be a possibility that the dead period is extended and Spring sports are lost.I am extremely saddened for our seniors, Newton said. If they lose their entire season, they cant get that back. We saw this with the cancellation of the NCAA basketball season and the cancellation of the NCAA tournament. At a time when they should be experiencing great highs and final games competing against district or rival schools, they have been locked out. This lively green is often thought to be a zestier lettuce or salad green. However, arugula is actually a cruciferous vegetable and a member of the health-enhancing Brassica family, which also includes kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and broccoli.

Arugula has small flat leaves and long stems. While it's delicious raw, its flavors can be enhanced and sweetened by a quick saut or steam. Plus, it's a low-calorie option that's chock-full of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, packing a powerful punch of benefits.

Like many leafy greens, arugula has a rich and varied nutrient profile. Arugula contains some fiber as well as a wide range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

1. Arugula Is Linked to a Reduced Risk of Cancer

Cruciferous vegetables, like arugula, contain a group of anti-cancer compounds known as glucosinolates, which are sulfur-containing chemicals.

Glucosinolates break down when cooked and eaten to form biologically active compounds that have been linked to preventing the development of cancer, the National Cancer Institute states. Epidemiological evidence has tied higher intake of cruciferous vegetables with a reduced incidence of cancer, according to an article in the December 2014 (BBA) - Reviews on Cancer journal.

Arugula also contains high amounts of erucin, which may be responsible for many anticancer activities, according to research published in the June 2014 edition of PLOS One.

What's more, arugula boasts antioxidants, which help protect our cells from oxidative damage. Studies suggest that eating two to three servings of dark leafy greens such as arugula every week is linked to a decreased risk of breast, skin and stomach cancer, according to the USDA Agricultural Research Service.

2. Arugula Is Tied to Good Heart Health

Green leafy vegetables, including arugula, have long been touted as health-promoting foods.

In fact, leafy green vegetables are associated with a decreased incidence of heart disease and can help support heart health, according to a meta-analysis published in the January 2016 issue of JRSM Cardiovascular Disease. And research shows that a diet rich in fruit and veggies, notably cruciferous vegetables (hello, arugula), is inversely associated with atherosclerosis, according to an April 2018 article published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

Blood pressure plays a role in maintaining heart health as well and enjoying a healthy diet full of foods rich in magnesium, calcium and potassium has been deemed an effective way to help lower blood pressure, per Harvard Health Publishing. Arugula contains all three of these minerals and, when combined with other plant-based foods, can help support heart health.

3. Arugula Can Help Maintain Bone Health

Our bones bear the brunt of our weight on a daily basis, but did you know that bone is a living tissue that continuously breaks down and rebuilds throughout life?

We typically reach our peak bone mass by the time we hit age 30, according to Harvard Health Publishing, after which it may remain fairly steady (depending on diet and lifestyle) for another 20 years. After that, women generally experience bone loss more quickly because menopause sets in while men may start to experience more bone loss in their late 50s.

That being said, vitamin K is essential for good bone health. And clocking in with more than 25 percent of a woman's daily needs and 18 percent for men per one-cup serving, arugula is packed with this bone-building nutrient.

In fact, not getting enough vitamin K is associated with an increased risk of osteoarthritis and fractures in older adults, a study published in the June 2014 issue of Molecular Nutrition & Food Research found. Meanwhile, getting enough K can help reduce bone turnover (aka breakdown) and improve bone strength, according to an April 2012 article published in the Open Orthopedics Journal.

Arugula is generally regarded as safe for most people to consume and is not known to be associated with any food allergies to date.

However, leafy greens, including arugula, contain low amounts of oxalate. It is recommended that those with a history of oxalate-containing kidney stones should avoid overconsuming oxalate-containing foods, according to Harvard Health Publishing.

Vitamin K can interact with a few medications and certain medications can also have an adverse effect on vitamin K levels, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Vitamin K is vital for blood clotting, so high amounts of this nutrient dilutes the effects of prescription blood thinners, such as warfarin. But people taking blood thinners should not cut out vitamin K completely since it is an integral part of healthy eating, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Instead, be consistent about the amount of vitamin K you eat daily to keep a constant level because sudden changes (increased or decreased levels) can disrupt the medication's coagulating power.

People on antibiotics or bile acid sequestrants to reduce cholesterol may experience decreased vitamin K status. Be sure to discuss any medication and food interactions with your health professional.

High intensity cardio exercises like running or jumping on a rowing machine burn a lot of calories. But they also require considerable amount of effort and are not ideal for people who are overweight.

HIIT (high intensity interval training) is the perfect workout for the time poor (although maybe it would be a push to call it lazy). HIIT workouts use short bursts of high intensity exercises to bring the heart rate up, followed by short intervals of low intensity intervals.

In fact, the fasting gave these participants better control over their glycemic levels.
