How to lose weight in summer – The News International

Posted: May 23, 2017 at 7:43 am

health

Dont hide your insecurities under big clothes! We have compiled 12 simple ways to slim down in summer, and feel good inside and out...

Whats not to love about summer? Its the season of relaxing vacations and outdoor activities. You might have lazed around or eaten a lot of junk during the winters, but fortunately summer is here and its time to shed off those extra pounds you added over the winter. It is being noticed that people tend to lose more weight during summers. Remember a weight loss plan is made up of 80 % diet plan and 20 % workout plan. Therefore, you ought to control your diet. Eat a light dinner at night. Make sure that you eat your dinner at least 2 hours before you go to sleep. Weve got some no-fail tips for you to lose weight, and feel more confident in summers...

1. Go organic: The first diet tip is to cut down the food you eat and go organic, which means eating more salads, fruits, and vegetables. Avoid oil, butter, ghee, cheese, and other fattening dairy products. Switch to green tea, mint tea or lemon tea, any tea is fine as long as you do not add milk and sugar to it.

2. No water weight: As winter season is dry, some quantity of water is stored in body to prevent dehydration. This is also a reason why we gain more weight in winters than in summers. But in summers, body sweats a lot thus body lose weight. You can drink more water without fears and lose weight easily in summer.

3. Stay away from temptations: Get temptations out of the home or office. This will limit those emotional binging moments. Stock up with fruits, veggies, yogurt, and other. Making small changes will help you reach your goals. Instead of ice cream, go for frozen yogurt. Replace your potato chips with baked chips.

4. Banish bloating: Take a tip from brides-to-be by abstaining from bloating foods, like beans and artificial sweeteners, for the next two weeks. Learn more bloating foods to avoid here. You can also use your meals to fight bloating, so fill your plate with summer fruits like watermelon, pineapple, papaya and peaches.

5. Soup delight: Experts say that soup is a great appetite suppressant as it has combination of liquids and solids that bust hunger. Eating soup before meals can help lower total calorie intake by about 20%. You can make it your main meal too!

6. Sensible eating: A great way to start adjusting to healthy eating is to not go mad all at once. As opposed to eliminating foods, try substituting it instead. When it comes to rice and pasta, opt for brown versions, as they are higher in fibre. The same goes for bread - swap the white bread for some whole meal; it tastes so much better with less calories! Try to eat fruit in between your meals to stop snacking on food that arent helping your waistline!

7. Emotional eating: There are days when we just feel down and dont want to do anything but eat a tub of ice cream, devour a cake, or order a deep-dish pizza and watch our favourite movies. The key to dealing with emotional eating is to consciously take control of the situation. When youre just about to delve into whatever youve chosen, walk away and run a bath, paint your nails, or simply step outside, take a few deep breaths and ask yourself if you really want to eat it.

8. Ditch the juice: Fruit juice is a higher sugar, lower-nutrient version of its source - and it contains less fiber, too. Besides, plenty of the nutritional goodies in fruit are concentrated in the skins, which tend to be lost in juicing. If you want apple juice, eat the apple, and have a glass of water with it.

9. Change your coffee order: While coffee itself is no bad thing, the dairy and sugar that go into it can be real calorie traps. For the next few weeks, swap your usual latte for black coffee, green tea and herb tea. You may well find that after six weeks, the milky, frothy lattes you once adored have lost their allure... this is the brain retrain youre after: a change of mind to change your shape.

10. Say hello to homemade cooking: People think that if they go to the gym they can eat whatever they want. WRONG! If you seriously want to shape up for the summer, you need to say goodbye to fast food. When you eat out, many of the foods you are ingesting are cooked in butter or other fattening ingredients, which is exactly the stuff you want to stay away from. Therefore, your best bet is to prepare and cook your own food.

11. Get good sleep: Get into a routine that includes exercising, scheduling your meals and working on your sleep patterns, and try to avoid using your phone while in bed. If you sleep well, then the metabolism of your body will be good which will in turn help you to burn your extra calories faster.

12. Summer workouts: Naturally, summer heat itself burns body fats and calories at a higher rate. As you are easily losing weight you also tend to do workouts to make weight loss very effective. Opt for the best summer workouts to lose weight faster; sweat a lot, drink a lot and lose weight easily.

Petaluma Boulevard South road diet funded – Petaluma Argus Courier

Petaluma is in line to receive an infusion of regional transportation funding, which could help complete projects including a narrowing of Petaluma Boulevard South and a bike path along the SMART train tracks.

The $3.5 million for Petaluma is part of a $26 million countywide funding package announced by the Sonoma County Transportation Authority last week. Most of the funding comes from federal gas tax, though the Metropolitan Transportation Commissions One Bay Area Grant, vehicle license fees and state sales tax.

The road diet will extend work already completed on Petaluma Boulevard. The road has been narrowed from Lakeville Street to E Street. With the new funding, Petaluma Boulevard South will go from four to two lanes from E Street to the round about at Crystal Lane in the Quarry Heights development.

Petalumas Deputy Director of Public Works Larry Zimmer said that the project is fully approved and fully funded. The money is expected in the 2018 funding cycle and construction is expected to begin in 2019 and take about one year to complete.

We got the complete ask, he said. Its wonderful. The great thing about getting the full construction money is now we can do the full project.

Dave Alden, a member of the citys Transit Advisory Committee, said he helped push the city to apply for the grant to fund the road diet. He said that road diets have a calming effect on traffic and make roadways safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Because you have more asphalt, it reallocates the asphalt to provide a better experience to pedestrians and bicyclists, he said. Im a big fan.

The Petaluma Boulevard North road diet was controversial as some motorists said it created a bottleneck where the road narrows. However, Zimmer said that traffic counts show that the same number of cars are using the street in the same amount of time as before the road diet.

The Petaluma Boulevard South segment is marked by potholes and cracks. Zimmer said that the road diet will also repave the street. He said that, in order to use federal funds for pavement, the city must complete the road diet so that the lane width meets federal standards.

The project includes 12 percent matching funds from the city.

Other Petaluma projects that received funding include $79,000 for bike and pedestrian facilities at Crystal Lane and Edith Street, $69,000 for Petaluma Transit marketing, and $400,000 for a SMART bike path between Payran Street and Southpoint Boulevard.

Bike advocates say that the Payran-Southpoint path will be a key route across Petaluma, connecting west side residences with an east side business park. The only pathway across town restricted for motorized vehicles is the Lynch Creek trail, the final portion of which was completed in December.

I am eager to have the SMART pathway move forward in Petaluma, along with new pavement that will benefit everyone on Petaluma Boulevard South, said Petaluma City Councilwoman Kathy Miller, an SCTA board member.

Losing weight after menopause is tough. Here are tips that may help. – Philly.com

Posted: May 21, 2017 at 11:48 pm

For Mary van den Berg-Wolf, 63, an internist in Bala Cynwyd, a ski accident and the resulting knee injury proved a wake-up call.

Knowing that every extra pound she carried translated into six pounds of additional pressure on that aching knee, she was determined to lose some of the 20 or so pounds she had gained between the ages of 45 and 50.

My experience with weight loss was always trying to lose a couple of pounds, trying to be healthy, eating a low-fat, high-carb diet and thinking of it as calories in, calories out, said van den Berg-Wolf. She often found herself cutting back on lunch and then devouring a box of low-fat cookies later in the evening.

And not losing weight.

Her experience, as many women can attest, is common. Shedding pounds after menopause is usually harder. But its not impossible, said Janine Kyrillos, director of the Jefferson Comprehensive Weight Management Program at Bala.

People are resigned to gaining weight as they get older, and they assume thats whats going on, said Kyrillos. But there are lots of subtle things happening, including lack of sleep and increased stress levels.

If people pay more attention to whats going on in their lives, it doesnt have to be a fait accompli that theyre going to gain weight, she said.

Metabolic changes during menopause, which make women more sensitive to carbohydrates, including sugars, can also promote fat storage, said Kyrillos.

During menopause, you become more sensitive to carbs, so you become more insulin resistant. Paying attention to the quality of food is important so you should try to stay away from carbs, processed foods, and sugars after menopause, she said.

Along with the metabolic changes of menopause, aging can also mean a loss of muscle mass, said Colleen Tewksbury, a registered dietitian and bariatric program manager at Penn Medicine. Since muscle burns the most calories, a reduction in muscle means a lower resting metabolic rate, which translates to weight gain unless you eat less.

When people age, they tend to get less physical activity, as well, said Tewksbury, who recommends weight-bearing exercise and eating enough protein daily to build muscle.

For van den Berg-Wolf, losing weight meant changing her eating habits to rev up her metabolism. With the help of Kyrillos, she reduced the amount she ate and focused on a diet higher in fat and lower in sugar. She drank more water, gave up alcohol, and took a tiny amount of a prescription appetite suppressant for about a year, to help her adjust to eating less.

And, she slowly lost 12 pounds, which brought her to the tippy top of the normal range for her 5-foot-7 frame.

I dont eat things like pasta and bread every night, but I certainly do eat them when I want to, said van den Berg-Wolf.

People can lose weight, Kyrillos said. People get discouraged and say you cant teach a dog new tricks, but you can work on sleep and stress, or try something different like intermittent fasting. I have patients who thought they tried everything but have been able to take new approaches that have been helpful.

If youre struggling with taking off those postmenopausalpounds, here are some tips:

But what if none of these measures helps?

Rhonda Cohen, 63, knows what thats like. She spent much of her life on numerous diets that rarely worked, but when she reached 50, the scale refused to budge. It was galling, particularly because she had never exercised so much in her life.

At 49, when she was really, really heavy she won three months at Platoon Fitness, a boot camp exercise program, and over a year of slow and hard work eventually participated in a 5K run, the 10-mile Broad Street Run, and her first triathlon.

At first she lost weight, but then stalled.

For a while I didnt really weigh myself, I just thought I was getting in shape, said the administrator from King of Prussia. At 50, my metabolism stopped, despite doing all this exercise. I was getting better at keeping up with the others in the program. But I didnt lose a pound.

Doctors who checked her metabolism and ran blood work to uncover why she couldnt lose weight simply told her some people cant lose weight.

Eventually, at 61, Cohen opted for bariatric surgery. Put on a super restrictive diet of about 1,000 calories a day presurgery, she finally was able to drop a little weight.

We don't put an age limit on bariatric surgery, said Tewksbury. We look at patients as individuals. If we have a 70 year old with a BMI of 40 who is metabolically healthy but at risk of disease we will consider surgery. Lots of factors are at play to see if its surgically safe to do the operation, including good psychosocial support.

Its all about whether benefits are going to outweigh the risks, she said.

Following Cohens bariatric sleeve surgery, she dropped 100 pounds. She feels much better, although she says she still considers herself overweight. But as an athlete who continues to go out for six-hour bike rides with friends on weekends, she realizes that she cant live on 1,000 calories a day.

I need to eat 250 to 450 calories an hour to keep my strength up during a bike ride, says Cohen, who once took four blood pressure medications and now takes none. My choice is to be healthier rather than skinnier.

Dr Ciara Kelly: This never-ending stream of complete twaddle

Independent.ie

Last week I wrote about nutri-babble and the lack of evidence that the ketogenic diet does anything to benefit cancer sufferers despite the claims of some. But seriously, it isn't just nutri-babble that's making my head spin.

Last week I wrote about nutri-babble and the lack of evidence that the ketogenic diet does anything to benefit cancer sufferers despite the claims of some. But seriously, it isn't just nutri-babble that's making my head spin.

It's a constant never-ending stream of complete twaddle about health issues in general that the internet is awash with. Everything from anti-vax baloney to fad diet bulls**t which I would be extremely happy to ignore except there are people who are likely to accept these things and may actually try them - to their own detriment.

As a doctor active on social media it's a bit like playing 'Whack-a-mole', trying to slap down one load of rubbish after another!

Two stood out for me this week though. Riona Little, an Irish Snapchatter with thousands of followers, posted that her "doctor suggested that I go on a water-based diet for seven to 14 days to help with my skin and digestion" and by water-based diet she literally meant just water. I was asked my opinion on this and I said as plainly as I could - that is not a diet, that is a hunger strike.

But what kills me is this. This woman is posting to her multiple followers, mostly young women, about literally starving herself - but under the guise of it being medically recommended.

I can safely say I have never, EVER heard of a health care professional - a doctor or dietitian - who would recommend such a thing. Yet this is how this is portrayed, not as a dangerous starvation regime the likes of which you might see on an eating disorder chat room, but as something that a doctor suggested. No doctor should ever suggest this.

That is the real danger - the attempt to dress up something extremely bad for your health, as something good for it. It is The Emperor's New Clothes of health advice.

The other thing I saw was on Goop, the website that Gwyneth Paltrow runs that advocates eating quinoa (pronounced Keeeenwah!) and buying gold vibrators. I have come to the conclusion that it is inevitable that Gwyneth and I will actually have to physically do battle - such is the need to stop her tirade of faux advice and irritating drivel. I feel she is becoming my nemesis.

Anyway, this time Goop has been recommending that women should insert jade eggs into their vaginas to improve their orgasms, their pelvic floors and their all-round 'connection to themselves'. As you do. A jade egg for the uninitiated is a small stone - made of jade - that is presumably egg-shaped.

The fact that the website is providing links to selling these eggs clearly presents no conflict of interest to their objectivity about this. Nor does the tiresome detail that there is no evidence to back up their claims of improved orgasms, etc, from walking around with pebbles shoved up your lady bits deter them in any way from stating for a fact that it does. That it may actually be harmful is no problem either.

The problem as I see it is many people out there see health as a kind of attractive marketing tool that they want to use to promote themselves or whatever it is that they are selling - a book, a blog, a lifestyle. And they think that they can operate in the 'health space' in the same way they did in the cooking or beauty or modelling space by simply claiming that stuff is true because they believe it is or possibly more so because they want you to believe that it is.

But the rules, as I have said before, are different around health. The burden of proof is higher and the responsibility is far greater when you are talking to people about something as fundamentally important as their physical or mental well-being. And that is as it should be.

And there has, of course, always been quackery, always been snake oil salesmen, but the internet and social media have provided them with a massive boost to their abilities to put their misinformation out there. And sadly there is a queue of celebrities lined up to endorse stuff they are selling under the guise of health, but it isn't right. Fiction dressed up as fact needs to be taken down.

And much as I hate to burst your babble luvvies, stuff like living on water being healthy needs to be taken with a very large pinch of salt.

Tourists Helped Fatten Him Up; Now Thai Monkey Is On A Diet – NPR

A wild obese macaque named "Uncle Fat," who was rescued from a Bangkok suburb, sits with bananas in a rehabilitation center in Bangkok, Thailand, Friday.

Whether he likes it or not, a morbidly obese wild monkey in Thailand is now swapping an anything-goes diet of junk food and soda for a strict regimen of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins.

Dubbed "Uncle Fat" by social media followers who began circulating photos of him last month, it was tourists, apparently finding his folds irresistible, who plied him with sweets.

But the primate's predicament is a good example of why people should not be feeding wild animals. Today he weighs 60 pounds, three times the amount of an average adult, reports the Associated Press and is facing serious health issues.

He is in the care of Supakarn Kaewchot who says all of that fat formed a mass that became a type of benign tumor. "He is now in critical condition where there is a high risk of heart disease and diabetes," she says.

Wildlife official Kacha Phukem captured the macaque on April 27 from a Bangkok suburb and tells the Associated Press, "He was the leader of his pack, and when I tried to go in, I had to fight off a flock of them with sticks."

In addition to providing muscle, the pack would ensure that the leader needn't lift a finger for his meals.

"He had minions and other monkeys bringing food for him," said veterinarian Supakarn.

But the hope is that without all the bad influences, Uncle Fat will soon be returning to fighting weight. He is being fed just 14 ounces of lean protein and produce twice a day.

Officials hope to release him within the next few months. But whether Uncle Fat can keep off the weight once he gets back to the wild and back to temptation is another story.

Jinder Mahal’s Diet & Exercise Routine: How He Obtained His Physique – Heavy.com

Posted: May 21, 2017 at 11:47 pm

Jinder Mahal recently stole the World Championship, despite not actually winning it. (WWE.com)

Not long after Jinder Mahal returned to the WWE, fans began to notice that he looked absolutely ripped compared to how he looked during his previous run in the company. So how is it that Mahal was able to transform himself like this and maintain this physique?

In recent interviews,Mahal says that its largely a matter of diet, and he says the main factor is consistency.

I literally havent had a cheat meal in 3-4 months, Mahal told Sportskeeda. I havent eaten anything I shouldnt have. Even now, on the tour, I have my cooling bag with me and I carry 5 meals with me so that I eat every 2 hours. I eat30/40 grammes of carbohydrates, 30/40 grammes of proteins with every meal.

Mahal says that he also exercises six days a week, and he does not drink or use drugs of any kind.

Then theres cardio 6 days a week and weight training 6 days a week, Mahaltold Sportskeeda.I also became straight-edge. I also do a lot of Olympic compound movements. Then there are lots of basic squats, lots of push-ups and other exercises. Overall, from diet to exercise, Im seeing good results. Im going to keep getting in better shape because not only do I look better but I feel better.

Clearly, Jinder Mahal works extremely hard, and Triple H has said that this is something he recognized and appreciated about Mahal. It also seems like part of the reason the company decided to suddenly give him a main event push after previously terminating his contract.

Jinder is a guy who has always worked extremely hard, Triple H told The USA Today. He trains hard; hes very intense about what he wants with his career; hes very thoughtfulTo Jinders credit and to Drew [McIntyre]s credit, they left, they went and figured it for themselves, they improved. Theyre both men now as opposed to kids trying to make it in the business. They see their careers differently and what they want and are still extremely hard workers and great people. Now hopefully they are in a better position to succeed.

There has been quite a bit of speculation over the past year that Jinder Mahal has abused steroids in order to get the body he has now. Mahal has maintained this is completely false and that he has been tested by the WWE multiple times.

Ive been tested multiple times since coming back, and have never once in over 6 years with WWE had any issues, he said on Instagram recently. Follow my IG stories or my SnapChat and you can see that no one is out-training me, and no one is out-dieting me.

Indeed, those who follow Mahal on Instagram will see that hefrequently posts photos of himself working out at the gym.

On his Snapchat, he also often posts photos of himself preparing meals.

"UncleFat" is a Macaque monkey getting some diet help from wildlife officials in Thailand. He became a 'chunky monkey' in the wild by gorging on junk-food handouts by local tourists as he roamed.

But, he got captured by wildlife officials in order to help his 'jelly-belly', which also formed a tumor. Now, he's getting a healthier diet regimen of lean protein, fruit and vegetables to help him lose weight and avoid the same health risks as humans for diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Officials hope to make "UncleFat" into a "Slim-Jim" by getting his weight back to normal ranges.

Macaques normally weigh about 20 pounds, and this monkey was tipping the scales at three times that much at 60 pounds.
