New Delhi: Losing weight is extremely important to lead a healthy and happy life. Not only for cosmetic reasons, being over-weight can have some serious physical and mental health implications. It can lead to a high risk of diseases like diabetes, heart problems, and kidney issues. Obesity is also linked with a high risk of certain types of cancer.

Since weight loss is so important, so many fad diets, workouts, and products are available in the market, which claims to help with weight loss. One such product is detox teas. Available in almost all places, all around the world, detox teas are hailed as a healthy beverage, which can help you lose weight. However, how true is the claim? Let's find out.

Detox teas contain detoxing or antioxidant properties, which can help you remove toxins from your body. Removing toxins from your body is important to reduce free radical activity, which leads to oxidative stress and also increases your risk of diseases. Detoxing has been a popular practice since centuries, and detox teas are the newest trend. Detox teas are currently very popular among celebrities, models, and social media influencers, who credit the teas for their healthy skin, and flat bellies.

Teas have been considered and hailed as a healthy beverage, since ages. Teas like the Green tea are popular for their benefits for weight loss. Other detox and herbal teas like the ginger tea are consumed as a home remedy for sore throat and congestion. Herbal teas contain antioxidant properties, which are known to help with weight loss.

However, detox teas do not come with a set of cons, just like everything else in life. According to Healthline, just like all food supplements, the ingredients in detox teas are not by the FDA and other equivalent bodies, across the world. Some detox teas have been found to contain certain harmful ingredients, which can cause more harm than good.

Various detox teas contain laxatives, which are supposed to help give your body a slimmer look, by increasing the speed at which the food passes through your digestive tract. However, it may not be a healthy way to lose weight or detox your body. Detox teas, in certain cases, may also trigger an eating disorder like anorexia, which can be very harmful to one's health.

‘I lost 4st and had the miracle baby doctors told me Id never give birth to’ – Mirror Online

Posted: March 22, 2020 at 6:52 am

Christine Thompson was so desperate to lose weight after a lifetime of anxiety over her size she begged her GP for help.

Heartbreakingly, it was while she was trying to get the help she needed to slim down that she was given the devastating news she had polycystic ovary syndrome and would never be able to have children.

Christine had always wanted to be a mum - but determined to make the most of her life she threw herself into her job of helping children with special needs.

One of her friends then inspired her to shed a massive four stone - and it helped her achieve her 'miracle' and become a mum.

In 2017 Christine took a pregnancy test and was overwhelmed when it showed she was expecting.

She is now the proud mum to two-year-old Tabatha.

The 37-year-old explained: "I was always chunky as a child, and remember aged eight asking my mum to take me to the doctor so I could get a diet.

"When I went I was told the usual thing eat lots of healthy food and youll be fine, but that didnt give me the answer I was looking for.

"I remember wearing size 14 clothes when I was in year 6, and at 49 that basically meant I felt spherical compared to my friends."

By the time she was a teenager Christine was bingeing on secret hoards of food like crisps, biscuits and chocolate.

She would also "double dip" meals by going to her grandmother's for tea and then coming home for her evening meal without telling her parents.

When she left school and started work at a printing company, Christine also started drinking.

She said: "I added big boozy sessions to my terrible diet, regularly downing 10 vodka and cokes in a night, as well as getting greasy takeaways before bed and fried breakfasts the next morning to help me cope with the hangovers."

It was then that she started struggling with depression and anxiety, all because of her body image.

Her GP prescribed anti-depressants but Christine was still struggling.

She said: "Id suffer panic attacks at the thought of being in public spaces, so when friends would call to ask where I was, Id invariably say I couldnt make it, or I just wouldnt answer my phone."

When she was 23 Christine started an animation course at university and was determined to lose weight.

He gave her some dietary advice and transferred her for a scan, where her polycystic ovary syndrome was discovered, which was the reason she was struggling to lose weight.

Christine said: "He then explained that because of my PCOS I wouldn't be able to have kids unless I had took tablets to regulate my menstrual cycle and then had IVF, which really wasnt something I wanted to consider so young.

"Even if I had the medication which had bad side effects my chances of conceiving were minimal.

"And if I delayed the treatment thered be even less chance of having kids, they said. It was just a ridiculous conversation, and I felt like my world was in pieces.

"I remember standing in the rain at the bus stop outside the GP surgery calling my mum with the news, tears rolling down my face.

"My right to be a woman was gone, and my depression spirally down and down."

After she finished university Christine moved back in with her parents and was given the devastating news that her parents had terminal cancer.

She said: "I had a complete breakdown, and pretty much stopped eating completely, going down to 11st, but I still wouldnt leave the house."

The turning point for Christine came when she got a job at a special needs school, which she loved.

She said: "If I couldnt be a mum, I could help these lovely kids find happiness, I thought.

"The sense of fulfilment and the other staff made me happy for the first time in living memory."

Then Christine bumped into a friend from school who had lost weight with WW, which used to be Weight Watchers.

Weight loss classes had never been something Christine had considered because of her anxiety but her pal reassured her if was relaxed and friendly, so she decided to give it a go.

She said: "It was like she said really open, honest and a safe place for me to talk about my feelings about food.

"I didnt buy any special foods, I just used a calculator and pointed everything, and it worked! I lost 4lbs in my first week and left my weigh-in skipping."

In less than a year Christine had shed four stone and felt "incredible inside and out".

She said: "I started having regular periods and came off anti-depressants for the first time in seven years.

"I even started exercising for the first time ever, and loved it.

"My panic attacks stopped completely and I was a social butterfly, always accepting invitations to head out to meet friends.

"I was dating and basically living the life I never thought Id have."

Then, in September 2017, Christine felt something wasn't right.

She had been able to stop taking the medication she had previously needed to help her PCOS, which had given her migraines.

Before she visited her GP she did a pregnancy test to rule it out and was stunned when it was positive.

Christine said: "I called my mum straight away with the amazing news, and she was sobbing with joy.

"Id spent years working with kids who came from tough, often loveless homes, wondering why I couldnt be a mum, and now this was it, my miracle had happened."

Even though she was a single mum Christine said her confidence was by now "sky high" and with support from her parents knew she could go it alone.

But there was another amazing surprise.

Christine said: "A good friend of mine called Ben was also there for me, and when I finally gave birth to Tabatha in March 2018 fighting fit and screaming like she should he said hed love to be her dad and my partner.

"Since then every single day is a blessing. Tabatha is a joy, my job is amazing, Im back to my goal weight after the pregnancy and Ben and I are even talking about trying to another.

"Ive since found out that losing weight really can help you conceive if you have PCOS, but nobody told me that before Id been stuck in this vicious circle of being miserable, eating more, not being able to have kids.

"I broke that cycle and have finally found true happiness as the mum I was told Id never be."

To everyone who thinks weight loss surgery is the ‘easy’ option – 9Honey

Posted: March 22, 2020 at 6:52 am

Sam's story begins like so many other Aussies who have struggled with their weight. She was healthy and active as a child, and then puberty hit, and high school.

It's not a combination that tends to result in body confidence, especially for Sam, 53, who was always taller than the other girls, and boys.

"Dad was a butcher so we always had good quality food," she tells 9Honey. "I didn't start getting bigger until I was 16. I had always been the tall girl in the middle of school photos."

She was bullied and teased, which made matters worse.

"I was still active and playing tennis, but I just had a different body type," she says. "But then as I got older, I started making my own food choices."

This resulted in weight gain, and then she started dieting.

"I think the first diet I went on was probably Weight Watchers or something like that," she says. "Mum tried to help me. She'd make sure I had a healthy lunch. She could see how uncomfortable I felt."

Sam became so uncomfortable that she stopped going out friends as often as she usually would.

"I would lie and say I was sick," she says. "I didn't feel comfortable going out because of my size and it got worse as I got older. You socially isolate yourself.

"I didn't even feel comfortable going out for a coffee. I felt as though people were judging me."

When she was 21, Sam fell pregnant with her son and says it was the happiest time of her life.

"I'd always wanted to be a mum," she says. "Even when I was pregnant, I still played tennis until I was seven months along and badminton until I was eight months. I was fit as a fiddle, just bigger than I should have been."

After becoming a mum and stopping work, Sam soon found herself putting on even more weight.

By the time she became a grandmother, Sam could no longer physically do everything she wanted to do.

That's when she began looking into weight loss surgery, reading about people who had chosen the procedure to improve their health as well as speaking to people who had had various types of weight loss surgery.

"I learned that weight loss surgery was just a start, a tool and I'd have to change my lifestyle if I wanted to keep the weight off," she says. "Having the support of my surgeon, nurses, psychologist, dietitians and everyone at the Darebin Weight Loss Centre was crucial."

Sam feels annoyed when people call weight loss surgery an "easy" option.

"Someone I'd known for 15 years-plus told me to 'just get off my arse and exercise'," she says. "And she'd known me for years and had seen all of the ups and downs I'd been through, efforts I'd made and allthe self-loathing I went through."

She'd also been suffering from related health problems.

"Before the surgery, my health was terrible, I had really bad knees which hurt 24 hours a day and my quality of life was down the toilet," she says. "And I had very low self-esteem and just felt dreadful."

Sam had the surgery in May, and hasn't looked back.

"My grandchildren didn't care how I looked. They just wanted to play with me, especially for me get on the trampoline with them which I can now do but I couldn't before because of my knees and the excess weight," she says.

She says her son, mum and daughter-in-law tell her "constantly" how proud they are of her, not just for undergoing the procedure but for changing her entire lifestyle for the better.

"I know now that I deserve to have a long life and to not be physically limited by my size," she says. "My weight no longer defines me."

She says taking the time to prepare meals and staying active is key to improving her physical and mental health for good.

She says for those considering weight loss surgery, it's important to be prepared.

"Whether or not you tell everyone is up to you, it's a very personal journey" she says. "Still, you can have all the support in the world and still not be mentally there as much as you need to be.

"You have to be mentally prepared to front a lot of demons and put the work in, or in my opinion you'll just put all the weight back on".

(ThyBlackMan.com) No one wants to get fat but everyone is too lazy to do anything about it.

Obesity has become one of the major concerns of today. With all the facilities available on our doorsteps, we have become so sluggish that sometimes it gets so hard to get out of the bed in the morning. Over the last twenty-five years, the rate of obese people has increased considerably and today two-thirds of the Western population is overweight!

The weight loss industry is full of people that will advise all sorts of crazy plans and workout techniques that are not even backed by evidence or are far away from practicality. But here are some scientifically-backed strategies that are quite effective. After reading these tips you will know that it is the last guide to weight loss that you will ever need.

Drink lots of water, especially before meals

We have heard a lot that drinking water can help us lose weight at a considerable rate. Thats true. Drinking water boosts the metabolism of your body by almost 24-30% over a duration of 1-1.5 hours and helps you burn a few more calories. A study shows that drinking half a liter of water about half an hour before having meals helps people to lose 44% more weight as compared to those who did not drink water.

Drink 10 glasses of water daily for burning fats from your body and keeping your skin hydrated and fresh.

Reduce the intake of carbs

Eating sugary snacks and drinking certain fruit juices raise the blood pressure quickly, triggering your pancreas to release a flood of insulin A the hormone that fertilizes fat cells which instructs the body to store calories as fat and causing it to increase in number and size. With calories that are trapped in your fat cells, there is too little glucose and few lipids that will circulate in your bloodstream to power your brain and muscles.

Overeating also makes the fat cells grow. So if you want to break this vicious cycle, you need to lessen the intake of carbs in your body. For example, if you want to have bread with dinner, you can eat it after you have eaten some proteins and green veggies first.

Because studies show that if you save simple carbs for later in the meal, they do not affect the body much.

Drink coffee, preferably the black one

Coffee has been considered a bad thing for the body. But studies show that high-quality coffee is loaded with useful antioxidants that have many health benefits.

The caffeine in the coffee boosts the metabolism rate by 3-11% and increases burning fats up to 10-30%. Only make sure that while having coffee you avoid adding sugar or other high-calorie ingredients in it. That will completely nullify any sort of benefit.

Exercise the right way

Working out burns calories at a faster rate and boosts metabolism in the body by building muscle strength. But the body is programmed in a way that makes it hold on to extra pounds in your body, as told by experts. This means that while exercising, the body senses the deficit and increases the level of hunger. So if you are not careful, you will eat more than what you burn and all the sweat will go in vain.

During exercise, for best results, do three to five cardio sessions that burn 250 to 400 calories each, as advised by medical professionals.

Use the three Ps method

Protein. Produce. Plant-based.

These three Ps will let you lose a lot of weight. It is recommended that the daily intake of protein helps you lose 70% of the weight from fat. Produce is packed with filling fibers that will lessen the intake of a lot of vegetables and make it easier to consume more calories. For instance, three cups of broccoli is a lot of food yet only 93 calories. So, monitor your intake and take a balanced diet with no excess of anything.

The plant-based fats such as olive oil and those found in avocados and nuts are very healthy. So, integrate these three Ps into every meal and snack you take.

‘Training was tough’ – Fitness fanatic Hannah made a big splash to shed the stones – Stoke-on-Trent Live

Posted: March 22, 2020 at 6:50 am

Activity co-ordinator Hannah Guthrie has lost more than five stone through healthy eating and exercise which included a two-mile open water swim across Lake Windemere.

The 29-year-old who works at the Friends for Leisure charity was determined to shed the weight before her 30th birthday.

But her dream was made even more difficult as she suffers with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Hannah said: My PCOS symptoms can make things like weight loss loss and maintaining weight quite difficult.

I want to raise awareness of this and show people that it is still possible to do a journey like this and lose weight, even if you do have PCOS.

Over the last three years, Hannah has steadily lost 5st 6lbs with 4st 3lbs of that being achieved following the Slimming World plan.

She originally followed it independently from home, but then decided she wanted the support of a weekly group and consultant to keep her on track.

She added: It has been a slow process over the last three years, but Id rather do that than lose it really quickly. It means that I have been able to maintain it and keep the weight off.

I had done so well in the past and lost two stone. This time, I decided to put more of a focus on my exericse.

I was referred to the NHS One You programme and was given a one year gym membership to get me started. I think my group was the first One You group in Cheshire East. I started to really enjoy exercise and found new ways to keep it interesting and exciting. My partner is really into the gym too so we did things together.

I also did longer, more interesting dog walks and really enjoyed bodypump and Clubbercise classes.

I also did a two mile open water swim across Lake Windermere. Training was tough because it was freezing but on the day it was 22 degrees, so it was quite nice.

For her diet, Hannah, from Congleton, followed the Slimming World plan. It was something that worked for her and she loved the support of a group.

She said: Sometimes I do have to shoot off and go to work, so I will get weighed and just go. But I know that the support is there if I need it.

People there are so supportive. Anyone who is considering joining Slimming World, I would say definitely go for it. Nobody cares how big you are everyone is there for their own reason.

And despite her weight loss success, Hannah is still attending her Slimming World group and carrying on with her journey.

She explained: Because Im quite tall (6ft) my BMI says that I am technically still overweight. So Im carrying on and want to lose maybe another stone.

Anyone who wants to lose weight, I think you have to prioritise your mental health first and make sure that you are doing it for the right reasons

You also have to be optimistic and dont put yourself down you can do it!

He continued: It was over the oil used in mayonnaise as we walked up and down the aisles. In the early days, we had to do our own food shopping for our shoot. And I think we thought the programme was falling apart really.

Fortunately, the pair were able to quickly settle their differences and have since gone onto to have long-standing cooking careers and friendship.

Speaking about their relationship, Dave explained: We cook together really well. Its great. Its funny, the last book that we did, One Pot Wonders, we kind of started writing the recipes while we were on tour.

"We set ourselves 10 ideas because we had 200 recipes. But it kind of snowballed because I dip into something and then he dips into something.

He added: But we get on really well. Were in business together and its like being in business with your brother. It just works really. Weve spent a lot of time together. Si has got his fianc in Australia and I've got my family, so we do have to go home sometimes."

Teams around the state are left wondering whether spring practice will be allowed to move forward or if the Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama High School Athletic Association opt to shut it down.

The decision was made last week (March 17) to shut down schools for 2.5 weeks due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, which forced the cancellation of spring sports events during that period.

On April 6, when schools are scheduled to re-open, another decision will be made about whether to shut down classes and sports for the year or proceed with caution. The University of Alabama, Shelton State and Stillman College all canceled their spring sports seasons, and classes are being instructed online.

"We are just waiting until further notice on what school is going to look like, whether thats return on April 6 or be out for the remainder of the school year," first-year Central High football coach Rodney Bivens Jr. said. "Everything is just basically up in the air."

Bivens said the Falcons planned to have spring practice the last week of April and the first week of May. Now hes not sure what will happen or if the Falcons will be able to do anything this spring.

"Once we get notification from the higher ups we will have a better thought process as what specifically well be able to do with the players and what we will not be able to do with the players," Bivens said. "Right now theres no conditioning, no weight training. There is nothing we can do with our student athletes on campus or off campus. We really arent able to do anything with the players at this moment."

Hillcrest coach Sam Adams is in the same boat. He said it doesnt make sense to make a schedule with all the uncertainty. For now, hes just waiting for further instructions.

"Now we dont really know what that schedule is going to look like. Its obviously going to change a little, if its not completely canceled. It just depends on what the state and the AHSAA tells us what we can do," Adams said. "We are kind of building the bridge as we cross it. There really is no point in trying to get all the plans ironed out right now."

Adams and Bivens have been giving their players some workout instructions during the break. Its not the same as the team being together in the weight room or on the field, but its the best they can do.

"We have an app called team builder," Adams said. "That sends out the workouts on a daily basis. That helps us out a little bit. All players have access to that. They get sent a body weight workout every day -- stuff they can do out in the yard, running down the street or wherever they can do it. Hopefully they are still getting some work in. Its not going to be the same as being in the weight room, and we dont have someone there to hold them accountable for that. They do have access to some sort of organized plan."

Adams said the Patriots have hit the weight room hard the last few weeks before the shutdown, but the loss of time could be a hindrance down the road.

"You start extending that to three, four or five weeks, you run the risk of losing a lot of the gains you made over the last several months," Adams said.

There is the loss of spring practice to consider, which Adams is preparing for. Should spring drills be canceled, Adams and the Patriots coaching staff will try to do as much work that is allowed in the summer to prepare for the fall.

"What I am doing is getting everything organized as if we wont have spring practice at all," he said. "That would change our summer routine to get a little bit more on the field time to get in some of the teaching time that we missed. There is no way they would let us practice in the summer in pads. If we dont get to go through spring practice we will miss all the contact, but we would try to make sure we have everything taught the same way we would have had we gone through spring practice. We just wont have as many live reps."

There is still hope for spring practice to continue, depending on what the ASDE and AHSAA decide. But there is also a chance that the fall season could be affected, which folks in Alabama dont want to even consider.

"Football is important but its not the most important thing during times like these," Adams said. "I just hope everyone is doing what they are supposed to to get this thing over with as quickly as possible to where we dont have to lose time in the summer or even in the fall.

"Depending on what you are reading, some folks are giving a pretty bad forecast down the road for this thing. At this point its just a lot of adjusting on the fly for everyone in the country."

Said Bivens, "its a waiting game for everybody. We will just sit by the phone and wait to hear what the next step will be."
