Diet/no-cal COLAs would slam past, present & future feds – FederalNewsRadio.com

Posted: June 12, 2017 at 8:46 am

The Trump administrations plan to slim future federal pension benefits, big-time, has electrified feds. They are nervous, whether they are decades away from retiring or have been retired for years. Feds and retirees (or their survivors, in both plans) have reason to be anxious:

FERS was set up to replace the more expensive CSRS program, and to take into account that only about one-third of the people who work for the government actually retire from it. FERS replaced the more generous CSRS pension/annuity benefit, but added Social Security and a generous 401k package, in which employees who contribute at least 5 percent of their own money get a 5 percent match (the equivalent of a tax-deferred pay raise) to their 401k. FERS is more portable than the CSRS program because of the Social Security and Thrift Savings Plan components.

At the time FERS replaced CSRS, many people suspected/feared that eventually, Congress would eliminate the CSRS program, forcing workers into the less costly (to the government) FERS plan. But that didnt happen, and now the number of people getting the more generous CSRS annuity is probably too small to make them a target. But both groups would be hit under the Trump budget if and it is a big if Congress goes along.

Some feds worry that if COLAs are reduced or eliminated, the next step will be to eliminate the retirement component of FERS for people hired in the future. Others worry that the matching government contribution to FERS employees TSP plans maybe on some future hit list. Meantime, heres a comment from a long-retired postal worker:

Nice article about grampa and pension plans. Like most CSRS retirees, I follow pension-related news using thepostalnews.com website. I am a retired (2009) mailman. I think its important to note in any conversation about federal retirements is the WEP/GPO. Mailmen do not pay into Social Security and anything they earn is greatly reduced or eliminated, including spousal survivors benefits. I know you know this. So, my take-home pension of $2,333, plus $154 SSI is not going to buy me that house on the Riviera. I feel its comparable to someone with 30 years substantial earnings for SSI, plus a 401k. I think most of the public assumes we get full SSI benefits and are surprised when I explain to them that we dont.

I consider the 401k system the biggest scam of the 20th century. I remember when it first started, companies would say that they would match employee savings because of the money they saved by not paying out a pension. Time and time again, my children have seen an end to employee matching, especially when the company is on the skids.

I also remember how some of my friends looked down at me for remaining a mailman. It was that whole public-sector snobbery. They were riding high with their expense accounts, medical benefits, and decent pensions. Now that that has been yanked out from under them, I hear a lot of pension envy out there. Well thats not fair, you shouldnt have that type of talk. Misery loves company.

And the whole COLA thing. Another sham. The only thing that hasnt gone up in my budget is my income in the last five years, for the most part. And they want to reduce it by another 0.5 percent. To be fair, Obama proposed using a different formula, which would have reduced it anyway.

So, here I am knocking on the door of 64 with an artificial hip and knee, contemplating going back to work. All because of Trump and the Republican party. And 40 percent of union members vote Republican. It used to drive me nuts when I was a steward to hear that. I remember being accused of violating the Hatch Act. Hell, my bosses probably couldnt even spell it. I still chuckle over that.

At times I get bitter, frustrated, angry, but the hell with that.

Ill just go back to work. And to quote Alec Baldwin in The Departed: The world needs more bartenders.'

How to lose 20 pounds – Today.com

We often hear about the last few pounds to lose. But what about when you have a whole 20 to go? A two-day juice cleanse isnt going to do the trick (nor is it usually healthy). Here are some lifelong tips to help you lose (and keep off) those 20 pounds for good.

Eating less is a good thing when youre trying to lose weight, but restricting your calories too low may lead to binges and send you into the evil cycle of yo-yo dieting.

However, if youre eating to the point of starving your body of necessary calories, your body adjusts by going into protection mode (it wants to preserve stored fuel) and slows down. In most cases, this means muscle loss. If youre having trouble losing weight, try keeping a food journal and take a close look to see if youre skimping on fuel.

This step may take a little time to learn. But I urge you to be patient with yourself, because becoming comfortable understanding your hunger quotient will definitely pay off. Getting used to eating to the point of contentedness, and not fullness, is crucial to long-term weight loss. When you conquer this tool, regardless of what youre eating, you will never dramatically overconsume.

Meticulously counting calories will end up being more frustrating than useful. Calories in versus calories out is an old way of thinking. There is much more involved with losing weight (hormones and hydration to name a couple) than calories.

Focus on nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods such as vegetables to bulk up your meals. Also, lean protein (such as fish, poultry or plant protein) and a little bit of healthy fat at every meal.

Sip H2O throughout the day. Staying hydrated is majorly important whether youre looking to lose 5, 10, 20 or 50 pounds. Heard this before? Betcha have. But are you doing it? No better time to start than now. Drinking water is important for all cellular functions, and hydration aids in weight loss. Not only that, the brain easily confuses thirst for hunger.

One meal will not change your body. It will take a consistent effort of many changes over time. Again, one meal will not change your body. So, dont get stressed and obsess over every meal or snack gone wrong.

Being in the correct emotional state while trying to lose weight is just as important as what you eat. Throw out the throw in the towel mindset and believe that you can and you will lose weight. Even if you slip up and have a chocolate chip cookie.

Are there certain snacks you keep around your house that you cant help but nibble on? Is your desk at work so messy that you have a hard time focusing on a simple task? Cleaning, clearing out and decluttering what you can control will make a big difference in making improvements in your diet. Re-doing your morning routine is also a way to take control of your environment and routine.

Losing weight does not mean you have to swear off raw cookie dough forever. Youre working on instilling new practices and habits into your everyday life, and that also means relearning how to indulge. When you indulge youre actually more likely to stay on track with your new eating plan.

Choose your absolute favorite indulgence when the time is right, and skip the rest. Be conscious about what youre eating in the moment and take time to enjoy the indulgence. This is different from reaching your hand over and over into a bag of M&Ms until the moment youre surprised theyre gone. If youre at your best friend's birthday party, and someone brought cookie dough, have a scoop. And enjoy the indulgence as part of the event and move right back onto your kale salad.

Novo’s Xultophy beats basal-bolus insulin at cutting hypoglycemia, spurring weight loss – FiercePharma

Posted: June 12, 2017 at 8:45 am

SAN DIEGONovo Nordisk is in a tough market race against Sanofi with combo product Xultophy, which hit the market after the French drugmakers Soliqua. New basal-bolus topping data, though, could give the med a leg up.

Xultophywhich marries Novo's newest basal insulin, Tresiba, with its top-selling GLP-1 med Victozabeat a "gold-standard" insulin therapy at helping Type 2 diabetes patients avoid hypoglycemia and weight gain, common side effects of insulin. And it did that while matching the older basal-bolus treatment's ability to cut blood-sugar levels, a new study showed.

Presented on Saturday atthe American Diabetes Associations annual meeting, the trial pitted Xultophy against basal-bolus therapy with Sanofi's standard basal insulin, Lantus, and Novo's own mealtime insulin NovoLog. Xultophy took 66% of patients down below a 7% A1C target, similar to the 67% of patients who reached the mark with the basal-bolus duo.

RELATED:Top 10 diabetes drugs by 2016 sales

But Xultophy also managed to reduce severe hypoglycemic events by 89% and spur a median weight reduction of 2.06 lbs, versus the 5.81-lbmedian weight gain basal-bolus patients experienced, the study showed.

In other words, switching to Xultophy didnt come along with the increases in hypoglycemia and weight that are usually one of the tradeoffs for basal insulin patients who need to add bolus therapyfor improved glycemic control, Todd Hobbs, M.D., Novos North American chief medical officer, said in an interview. Thats where I think the real advantage of this combination is, he added.

But its not the only advantage. A basal-bolus regimen involves at least one shot of basal insulin along with several injections of faster-acting bolus insulin every day, compared with just one daily injection of Xultophy, marking a serious advantage for Xultophy in the convenience department, Hobbs noted.

Basal-bolus is kind of the gold standard for the best efficacy in terms of getting glucose down, so to take that on with one injection a day with this combination productwe were optimistic that we could do this, but we were very happy with the results, he said.

And as a separate analysis showed, despite a higher drug price for Xultophy, the total annual cost of taking one patient below the 7% target for A1C, a key measure of blood glucose, without weight gain or hypoglycemia was actually far lower with the combo medat $28,849 than it was with basal-bolus, a charge that rang up at $220,562.

Novo will take as many points as it can get in Xultophys column. Though it won FDA approval the same day as did Sanofis Soliquaa combo of Lantus and GLP-1 med Adlyxinit fell behind Sanofis product on the launch calendar, giving its rival a head start.

Thats not to say the Danish drugmaker is worried about how its entrant stacks up, though. While theres no head-to-head data comparing the two combos, the way Hobbs sees it, Xultophy gets the edge when you look at the components. In particular, in pitting Victoza against Adlyxin, the Sanofi medis a very short-acting GLP-1 that really affects one meal a day. And Victoza, being a longer-acting, easily once-a-day profile, affects all the meals, he said.

Sanofi, unsurprisingly, sees things differently. The value of the combination that we have is that Lantus, which is a product that a physician knows, is the chief mediator of fasting glucose control, Riccardo Perfetti, M.D., Ph.D.,Sanofis VP of global medical affairs for its diabetes franchise, said in an interview. And as for Adlyxin, it specifically corrects meal-related glucose excursions, meaning the combo addresses two problems and is really fixing glucose levels throughout the day.

The French drugmaker, meanwhile, had some positive data of its own to trumpet on Saturday. In a new analysis of Type 2 diabetes patients who had switched over from treatment with between 15 and 40 units of daily basal insulin, Soliqua lowered mean blood sugar levels by between 1.09% and 2.41%.

"I decided to go on a weight loss journey and two days later, I decided it would be pretty awesome to have a fitness journey. It just so happened that's when they opened up the half-marathon lottery," said Wenneson.

That's also when she registered and started her training journey with her husband.

"We work out with a personal trainer once a week. We bike," Wenneson said."I've worked up from starting at one mile all the way up the most I've run now is ten."

To date shes lost a total of 77 pounds, and says simply crossing the Grandma's finish line next week is her goal.

"I'm definitely nervous. I'm feeling more prepared than I thought I would be," Wennesonsaid."I just want to finish. I want a decent time, and I want to just have an accomplishment to feel really good about."

This year Cali will be one of 8,800 runners in the half marathon. 8,700 are registered for the full. Grandma's PublicRelations Director, Kate Kucinski says it's been choatic, but exciting preparing for another big crowd this year.

"There's a lot of different things we work through all year long and it's just really great to see it all come together now," said Kucinski.

Along with volunteers and staff - she says it's the participants that make the event memorable.

"Some people have maybe never ran a race before or this is their first. Maybe their 600th or their 100th and each race for them is special," Kucinski added.

For Wenneson despite the nerves, she's looking forward to being a runner instead of a spectator this year.

"I want to be part of the action and excitement at the end," Wenneson said."Everyone's cheering. It doesn't matter how slow your going, or if your walking."

Wenneson says this isn't where her journey will end.

"I'll continue to run 5K's," she said.

The races kick off this Saturday. At 6:15 a.m. the Gary Bjorklund half starts. Then the Grandma's full marathon starts right after at 7:45 a.m.

Weight Loss Tip: STOP Waiting For the Perfect Moment! – HuffPost

Posted: June 12, 2017 at 8:45 am

While the title of this article may give away the question Im about to pose to you, here goes: What if I told you that theres a way to get started on your health and weight loss journey, TODAY?! What if I told you that its extremely SIMPLE, and just takes a little bit of willpower and determination?

Its a warm, sunny day here on Long Island, and its been an enjoyable one for me. I played a softball doubleheader this morning (we won!), and will be doing some cleaning around the apartment after I finish watching the Mets game. No comments about their play, pleaseIts one of my very few guilty pleasures!

Now then, back to getting started

Look, when a new opportunity presents itself, we often tend to push it off. Us humans are NOT fans of change! We like to stay enthralled in our daily routines, so when a new task or a new project presents itself, we tend to put it off until the PERFECT time arises.

You know, when youre done with that project at work, or when your kids school gets out for summer and they go away for sleep-away camp, or when grandma gets out of the hospital

Heres a piece of advice I learned and re-learned MANY times on my personal 100 lb weight loss journey: Theres NEVER a perfect time! You may think that the stars will align for that time to come, but I can assure youIt wont!

Why wont it come? Because youre just going to come up with another excuse, because if youve been putting this off, thats what youve been doing in the first place!!!

At the end of the day, trying to legitimize your putting off your weight loss journey is just that: Excuse making! I get it: You have shit going on. Everybodys situations are different. But, speaking from personal experience on both my 100 lb weight loss journey AND during my time working with others on theirs, Ive heard every excuse in the book

Some of them would BLOW YOUR MIND at how ridiculous they were! I honestly would leave the conversation scratching my head, wondering how this person had the creativity to come up with something so ridiculous!!

So, if youve been thinking about starting (or restarting) for a while, but youre waiting for the stars to align, please do me this one favor: DONT WAIT!!! Youre wasting precious time either loathing in self pity and/or being a victim, when the simplest thing to do is to START!

Like Permanent Weight Loss, its SIMPLE, but NOT EASY!!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Just start! Dont put this off until tomorrow Do it today! It can be as simple as going for a walk around the block. It can be as minuscule as going to the grocery store, and buying healthy meat, produce and snacks to help fuel you on your journey.

P.S. As a token of my appreciation for you and your willingness to get started on your journey, Id like to offer you my FREE, healthy gluten-free bread recipe!

If youre addicted to grains in the form of bread, pasta and rice, and youre a sandwich savant, then this recipe will help you prepare a delicious loaf in just 40 minutes:-)

Fasting glucose as a marker for greater weight loss on a high-fiber, low-glycemic diet – Tufts Now

Fasting glucose as a marker for greater weight loss on a high-fiber, low-glycemic diet

SAN DIEGO and BOSTON (June 11, 2017, 3:00 ET)Researchers from the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, together with colleagues from Gelesisand the University of Copenhagen, presented preliminary data demonstrating that study participants with high fasting plasma glucose lost more weight than those with low fasting plasma glucose when following a high-fiber, low-glycemic load diet.

Presented at the American Diabetes Associations 77th Scientific Sessions (Poster #75-LB), the data suggest that fasting plasma glucose levels -- also called blood sugar levels -- could be helpful in determining the type of diet that is most effective for weight management for people with prediabetes or diabetes.

Fasting blood sugar is easily measured and our findings suggest that it could serve as a useful measure in advising some patients on the type of diet that is most beneficial for their weight loss, said senior author Sai Krupa Das, Ph.D., scientist in the Energy Metabolism Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston.

The biggest benefits of the high-fiber, low-glycemic diet were seen in people with high fasting blood sugar levels. Study participants with higher blood sugar levels lost more weight on a high-fiber, low-glycemic diet than those on the same diet with lower blood sugar levels, suggesting that it might be possible to optimize weight loss approaches based on a simple clinical measure, she continued.

Das is the senior author on the Healthy Weight for Living Study which found that workplace-based weight programs could be an effective approach for people with significant weight loss goals. Data from that study was used in this new analysis.

Participants in the six month study who were overweight or with obesity and who had high fasting blood glucose lost a greater percentage of body weight (-9.4 percent) compared to those with low fasting blood glucose (-4.1 percent). Notably, 79 percent of participants with high fasting blood glucose had lost five percent of their body weight compared to 50 percent with low fasting blood glucose.

In addition, 36 percent in the high group, vs. 8 percent in the low group lost 10 percent of their body weight.

The difference in response among those with high fasting blood sugar and lower fasting blood sugar is important. It might be time to consider glycemic status when advising patients on the best strategy for weight loss, said study author Susan B. Roberts, Ph.D., director of the Energy Metabolism Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.

Participants in the Healthy Weight for Living Study benefited from a behavioral weight loss intervention based on the I diet (www.theidiet.com) which is a high-fiber and low-glycemic weight loss program that includes behavioral support.

This study is published as a poster: the data and conclusions should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

The first author on the study is Lorien Urban, Ph.D., a graduate of the Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition Program at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts, formerly a post-doctoral scholar in the Energy Metabolism Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts and now at Gelesis. Both Das and Roberts are also faculty at the Friedman School at Tufts.

This study was funded by Gelesis. The Healthy Weight for Living Study was supported by the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (award T32HL069772), and the U.S. Department of Agricultures Agricultural Research Service.

How can you find the best way for you to lose weight – Bangor Daily News

Posted: June 12, 2017 at 8:43 am

I received an email last week through the contact form on my blog from somebody who works for a small research team. She explained that they recently conducted an unbiased review of weight loss programs. She included a link and wanted me to take a look.

With so many ways to lose weight, and most of them more promises than good weight loss science, I had no idea what I would find. I read it and clicked on the link not expecting much. I was blown away by the information I found on the page.

I wasnt looking to find a new way to manage my weight. I am fully satisfied with my program. Its right for me andfor a lot of people. Your choice could be influenced by preferences and circumstances different from mine. That may make a different program better for you. There is a way to quickly cut through the clutter of all the weight loss programs to get right to the best ones.

Reviews.com was started in 2013 by a small group of obsessive consumers with a passion for the truth, and the desire to find the best. We dont have bylines. Our reviews sit squarely on the shoulders of our entire editorial team. The picks we make for the best are collectively ours, not the individual opinion of a single writer. Every research methodology we write and every best we mention builds the credibility of the entire site.

The best weight loss plan review is well-researched and validated by third-party, unbiased, experts. The top picks made it onthe list because they stand out among the competition based on multiple important qualifications.

The review is excellent because it is comprehensive. You may look at it and immediately discount its value because, well, it places Weight Watchers as the top pick. You might suspect bias. Its no secret that I work for Weight Watchers. I endorse it every chance I get. It must be appreciated, however, that I champion Weight Watchersnot because it makesme money.I do it because itsaves you money.

You might disagree that Weight Watchers saves you money because its not free. There are lots of free weight loss apps, so how can Weight Watchers save you money? Here is how:

As much as I love Weight Watchers, I know its not for everybody and there are other reliable and safe ways to lose weight. Its the best way for a lot of people, but not everybody. For some, there is abetter road to take for some weight loss travelers.

Weight Watchers may end up being your choice, but if you want to see what other options are available that may suit you better, click here to seeReviews.comThe Best Weight Loss Program(when losing is the only way to win)

This review is extremely well done because the priorities arescientifically sound and evidence-based. Efficacy is important, and the only way a weight loss program can deliver results if youre able to stick with it. The weight loss programs that made the list of the best share some important features.

They found the best plans in 4 categories:

Each is worthy of being labeled best. Take a look for yourself. If you havent already started your weight reduction travels, or if your current plan is proving to be a dead end, you have options, find out what makes then best and what they are.

Mum and daughter lose 34st you won’t believe what they look like … – Daily Star

Posted: June 12, 2017 at 8:43 am

THIS mother and daughter dup have lost an incredible 34st between them.

SWNS

A mother and daughter have lost an incredible 34st between them the weight of almost three men.

Before the weight loss Liz Paice and Wendy Kenney tipped the scales at 28st each but gastric bypass surgeries have caused the weight to fall off.

32-year-old Liz let her weight spiral out of control with binges on Caramac bars, family-sized pies and huge fry ups.

Since the operation, she has lost an astonishing 17st and now weighs just 11st and is a size 14.

SWNS

Liz said: "I have two daughters and I wanted to live to see them grow up.

"I watched my mum have horrible health problems, and I saw myself mirrored in her.

"It came to a point where I'd yo-yo dieted a lot and I needed to do something about it.

Liz realised her weight was a problem around three years ago and it took her a further two years before she could get the gastric bypass surgery on the NHS.

She added: I went to the hospital for classes to help change my way of thinking when it came to food and to identify the source of my eating.

"My problems with eating started when I was young - I used to secretly eat and used it as an emotional crutch.

"I used to eat 100 profiteroles, 150 Caramac bars, hot dogs out of the tin - that sort of thing.

SWNS

Amazingly, these reality TV stars have lost more than 40st between them... all thanks to healthy eating and exercise

Scarlett Moffatt shows off her weight loss

The weight loss has had a positive impact on the family as Lizs eldest daughter Allison has even joined the gym at just age 11 so she can lose weight.

Lizs mother, 52-year-old Wendy also jumped on board the weight loss journey after she was forced to use a mobility scooter because of her weight.

Devon-based Wendy said: "I got to the stage where I couldn't walk or look after myself, and I needed help going to the toilet.

"I just thought 'I can't continue'. I'd been big all my life, yo-yo dieting, and I'd tried literally everything.

"In 2014 it became so bad I got a mobility scooter, and my husband told me that would be it if I got one, I'd always use it.

"I was 27 stone - I had to do something.

Wendy explained she was encouraged to eat as much as possible growing up which included a lot of starchy and fried foods, puddings and all big portions.

This philosophy followed her into adulthood and he would find herself eating an entire family pie for dinner some nights.

She explained: "I'd just eat anything I could get my hands on, washed down with four or five high fat milkshakes.

Wendy explained watching her daughter transform her life encouraged her to make a change.

Now, she has dropped from 27st to just 10st and a svelte size 14.

Wendy worked with a dietician to work out a revised eating plan and she also joined an assisted gym.

"The dietician really helped with what was better to eat - lots of protein, then fruit and veg, then carbs at the end of a meal if I had space left.

"I also used the assisted gym to help me lose weight, and joined the British Obesity Surgery Patients Association, which really helped keep me motivated.

"Liz made the first step, and I thought if she was doing it, I ought to."

Liz said it was great to go through this journey with her mother: "It's somebody to talk about meals with and exercise together.

"Because we've been losing weight at different times, we can swap clothes with each other.

"She's been a great emotional support, because there's someone else going through the same stuff."

With political help, lobbies put chemicals in our diet; BJP must honour its pledge to keep GM food out – The New Indian Express

Posted: June 11, 2017 at 7:45 am

Before the power of commercial lobbies, even the BJP government bows. The partys manifesto took a strong stand against GM foods; ignoring it, the Governments Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) green-lighted genetically engineered mustard in India. GM mustard is known to be more dangerous than GM cotton (which has caused havoc already) and GM brinjal (which was stopped in the nick of time).

Because mustard is used in every household every day in India, its health implications are of special importance to us. GM mustard is an HT (herbicide tolerant) crop. This euphemism means it uses a single herbicide, eventually becoming resistant and necessitating heavy use of chemical herbicide. Such excessive use has been linked to birth defects and childhood cancers. Almost all of Europe has discontinued the GM concept altogether because of health issues.

Why then does India welcome these traps? There are three reasons: The vested interests of politicians, over-enthusiasm of civil servants, and the apparent ease with which watchdogs like GEAC can be compromised. Much of this is facilitated by the worlds most powerful lobbying groups, which routinely influence US government policies. (Barack Obama appointed several Monsanto executives in his governments food and agriculture supervisory bodies).

These lobbies are no less powerful in India. Remember those horrid, heart-wrenching videos of endosulfan victims in Kasargod areas? They are still therepitiably malformed children and men with bloated body parts. Every time such pathetic pictures of human suffering appeared on television screens, people would ask: Why doesnt the government ban endosulfan? And every time Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar was confronted with the question, he would say: We need to do more tests to know if endosulfan is harmful. How thick can political skins get?

Insensitive politicians are aided and abetted by specialists in the governments planning bodies. Niti Aayog has argued in favour of GM mustard on the ground that the GM technology will substantially increase yield. This is a myth as UN statistics prove. Non-GM users have the highest mustard yieldGermany, France, UK, Poland, Czech Republic. Way down in the table are GM usersUSA, Canada, Australia. Why did Niti Aayog rely on other self-serving statistics? And why did it ignore social and health issues?

The bigger tragedy is that we cannot be sure of our watchdogs; under pressure, they become promoters rather than preventers of malpractices. India has for long been a victim of this malaise. In 2009, the Food & Safety Standards Authority of India, our only food regulatory body, saw Pepsi and Coca-Cola officials becoming members of panels to judge various technical matters such as sampling methods, additives and flavourings. With a board comprising representatives of the very companies it was supposed to regulate, what safety standards could FSSAI ensure?

Similar manipulations made the GEAC clear GM brinjal in 2009. Monsanto, described by The Guardian of UK as the worlds most hated company, infiltrated the GEAC and also gave various research assignments to field researchers and sundry agricultural scientists in the country. The result was that Monsanto-flavoured research reached the GEAC for Monsanto-flavoured decisions. Activist Kavita Kuruganti publicly charged that the chairman of the Expert Committee appointed to examine the matter was pressurised by the Agriculture Minister, GEAC and the industry to clear GM brinjal. We were saved from it only because an alert minister, Jairam Ramesh, put it safely in Trishanku Swarga.

The lobbyists turned smarter this time. They presented GM mustard as the product of a Delhi University teams research. This was followed by another report: The genes that went into the DU mustard were the property of Bayer, a merged part of Monsanto. Three giant corporations, including Monsanto-Bayer, control both the seeds market and the pesticide market globally. Its a win-win situation for them and Swadeshi scientists, too, necessarily work as their foot soldiers.

The only thing that can be done about technologies based on chemical pesticides is to eliminate them. Reckless use of pesticides in the cotton region of Punjab ruined a generation of farmers. Their tragedy was dramatised by the cancer train that took afflicted farmers daily from Bhatinda station to Bikaner (where the Acharya Tulsi Cancer Institute was more affordable). Biologist Pushpa Bhargava, appointed by the Supreme Court in 2008 to observe the GEACs functioning, was outraged by the manipulations he saw. Whatever Monsanto said was Gods own word, he said and warned: If BT Brinjal is released, it will be the single largest disaster in the country. Larger still will be the mustard disaster.

(AP Photo/Jack Plunkett) Elon Musk may make batteries for a living, but the billionaire entrepreneur once required a shocking amount of caffeine to stay energized.

At one point, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO was reportedly consuming eight cans of Diet Coke and several large coffees in a day to keep himself alert and on top of his grueling work schedule, Inc. previously reported.

This was back when Musk was working 100 hoursper week during the launch of his companies.

I got so freaking jacked that I seriously started to feel like I was losing my peripheral vision, Musk told Inc. He claims hisoffice now has caffeine-freeDiet Coke.

Sure, we're all guilty of craving acoffee pick-me-up, but thatis a ton of caffeine.

Most adults can safely consume 400 mg of caffeine each day. Diet Coke has 42 mg of caffeine in each can(more than any other type of Coca-Cola),whichmeans he was consuming 336 mg in just soda drinks.

Adding coffee into the mix likely put him over than 400 mg max. Atall coffee from Starbuckshas about 260 mg of caffeine per cup.

Musk isn't alone in his unhealthy eating habits.

Warren Buffett, who is 86 years old, has a McDonald's breakfast sandwich every day. On days when the market is down, Buffett claims he is more frugal and opts for the $2.95 Sausage McMuffin with egg and cheese. On good days, he'll order the bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit for $3.17. Every morning, he tells his current wife, Astrid, to put the exact change in the center cup holder of his car.

When Buffett arrives at his desk at Berkshire Hathaway in Omaha, he sits down to eat his breakfast with a glass of Coke.He drinks five Cokes per day.
